NEWS The Strength, Conditioning and Fitness Club support LHU basketball player Katie Krasinski

Guest Writer KatieKrasinski@icloud.com The Strength, Conditioning, and Fitness club wanted to come together and do something special for a fellow Bald Eagle. Ayanda McGill is a member of the Lock Haven University Women’s Basketball team and works in the library on top of being a student. Her mother, Kiyana, is fighting a rare form of cancer. To help with the expenses of hospital bills and travels, we as a club have created “UpLIFTING Kiyana”, a donation and a positive phrase can be made and will be given to Kiyana and her family to read.

I came up with the idea for this whole event and proposed an idea to take video clips of students and staff saying an UpLIFTING phrase for Kiyana that will be mashed together into a short film for Kiyana to watch.

As we say, no eagle fights alone. We hope that the kind words of others and the donations that we raise can bring a smile to Kiyana’s face and comfort to her and her family. Being able to support a family in need is something the Strength, Conditioning, and Fitness club takes pride in and we were more than happy to help in any way we could.

Voting in Lock Haven Cassandra Keller

News Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Students came out to vote at Lock Haven’s Third Ward Polling location in the East Campus gymnasium, which was just one of 35 locations. The Lock Haven Express reported that 12,158 registered voters, across Clinton County, came out to cast their votes despite the rainy weather.

At East Campus, students even got to take photos and take a cookie from the tent after casting their vote.

Paying for privacy on campus is costly Cassandra Keller

News Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu With the semester coming to a close and registration starting to open for next semester, many students start thinking about the cost of living on campus. Lock Haven University offers a wide range of on-campus living spaces, both shared and private; each with their own ranging cost.

Some students prefer to pay a little extra for that privacy, but do you know how much you’re paying for that privacy?

To find out, you have to compare the prices of the halls with the amount of floor space you get with each room.

In the residence halls such as Woolridge and Smith Hall, you get approximately 200-square-feet to each room. If you get a double room where you share the room with another person, you pay $3,270 for roughly 100-square-feet. That is about $32.70 per square foot. If you want to get a double room as a single, where you stay in the room by yourself, you pay $4,220 for the full 200-square-feet.

That, however, is about $21.10 per square foot.

The same pricing happens when comparing the Fairview Suites. In Fairview Suites, you can get a shared room where you share a common bedroom and a bathroom, which is 150-square-feet

in total. For that, you pay $3,990 for about 75-square-feet which is about $53.20 per square foot. If you want a private room where you have a private bedroom and share a common area with a bathroom you pay $4,359 for a total of 114-square-feet making the cost about $38.24 per square foot.

North Hall to become pet-friendly Staff Reports When Lock Haven University welcomes students back to campus in spring 2019, some may have their four-legged companions in tow. The university will be the first in the Pennsylvania’s State System to introduce a pet-friendly residence hall.

LHU North Hall Residence Hall Director, Emmy Borst, has fronted the university’s initiative to allow students to bring pets to the campus.

“Students who are comfortable where they live have greater success and pets are a great source of comfort to many students,” she said.

The move follows a trend in higher education that sees campuses offering students a true home-like living environment. “Studies show that students who feel at home on campus are the students that thrive both socially and academically,” Borst said.

Bringing a pet to campus is one way LHU hopes to enhance the student experience and attract students with an affinity for animals to enroll.

LHU’s pilot program will allow students to bring their long-term pet, defined by LHU to have been under the primary care of the resident or their family for at least three months, to reside in their North Hall room. Pets must be at least 6 months of age. The university has implemented a policy with strict guidelines concerning the species, breeds and sizes of animals permitted. The policy defines allowable pets as cats, dogs under 40 pounds with breed restrictions, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs and fish.

Students must submit an application for approval and registration to reside with a pet prior to bringing an animal to campus. As part of the application, the university will require photos of the animal and current vaccination records and a certificate of spay or neuter for cats and dogs.

Animals will not be permitted in campus buildings other than North Hall. While on campus, all dogs and cats must be kept on a leash and must wear current identification and rabies tags.

Borst notes that many LHU students currently residing in offcampus housing own animals. This opportunity will allow students who

opt-in to the program to enjoy the benefits of on-campus housing and pet ownership. The residence hall will offer numerous programs for students centered on their shared interest in animals.

Trained residence life staff will oversee the program and will offer support to student pet-owners while also closely evaluating the program and its policies. North Hall has the capacity to house approximately 200 students. The 90 students currently residing in North will have the option to remain there, or move to other on-campus housing once the program kicks off in January.

The pet-friendly residence hall differs from current policies which, under Pennsylvania housing laws, allow approved students to bring emotional support animals to campus. Current LHU students with emotional support animals will have the option to move to North Hall.

Owning pets is an important part of life for many students. Providing them the opportunity to continue their pet ownership while living on campus will, for many students, make their college experience more enjoyable and more successful.

Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, Tyana Lange, views this as a positive step in offering students a full on campus residential experience. “It is about providing opportunities and options for our students,” Lange said. “We want all students to be engaged and happy with their Haven experience.

Allowing students to bring their pets helps them feel more at home and hopefully help them transition successfully to college life.”

LHU President, Robert Pignatello, is excited about plans to launch the program. “Introducing a pet-friendly residence hall is about increasing opportunities for our students. The Haven is a great place to live and learn - and allowing students to bring a beloved pet to campus will only enhance their residential experience. We look forward to welcoming students and their animal companions to campus in January,” he said.

LHU University Players to present Mainstage Theatre Production, ”Almost, Maine“ Staff Reports University Players, the student theater organization, will present the Mainstage Theatre Production, “Almost, Maine,” at 7:30 p.m. November 8, 10, 15 and 17 and at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Sloan Fine Arts Center.

“Almost, Maine” is a play by John Cariani, comprising nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical almost-town called Almost, Maine.

7 Ariana Grande releases new song: “Thank U, Next” Kiara Carson

Arts & Entertainment Editor knc9459@lockhaven.edu Ariana Grande has had an up and down kind of year. Between dropping her new album, which continues to get rave reviews to this day, and having two heartbreaks weeks from each other, she still manages to bounce back by doing what she does best: releasing a new song.

“Thank U, Next” has only been out for a couple days and it’s already shaken the world up with many emotions.

In this new headbanger, Grande sings about all of her exes and what reflection she got from all of those failed relationships. Things like appreciating herself and her family more and even looking forward to falling in love again just with the right person. She mentions Big Sean “who just wasn’t a match,” exfiancé Pete Davidson who she thanks for attempting marriage with her and her late boyfriend Mac Miller, wishing she could thank him for the love that he gave her, but unfortunately can’t because of his passing back in early September.

Grande thanks all of them in an attempt to relieve herself from any resentment or horrible things she may have felt for them back then but doesn’t anymore because she wants to grow up and move on. The title of the song “Thank U, Next” is a clear and perfect way of expressing that and provides an extra incentive so that people don’t try and mix up the whole story.

Not only has the song made a remarkable impression on the world, one particular thing that Grande

says in her song has made a powerful quote on social media and it’s something everyone can relate to.

“One taught me love, one taught me patience, and one taught me pain” is honestly the most powerful message about love you could put out into the world. It speaks the truth of when you put yourself out there to be in a relationship and eventually get your heartbroken. It’s kind of like the three qualities a relationship/ ex can give you through the journey of love.

One will show you how to love for the first time, so you get an idea of what it can feel like. One will teach you how to be patient with your partner, so you could get used to one person for whoever they happen to be. Then, one will allow you to feel pain, a real emotional heartbreak so you can understand what it feels like and learn how to pick yourself up to live and love again.

This song is highly recommended to those of us who haven’t had the chance to love yet as brief warning of what’s to be expected and to let the rest of us know that’s okay to move on from the pain, but only if you’re willing. Listen, love, and reflect this beautiful song and have a love journey of your own to fully understand what Grande is talking about.

Fact Checking Mia Swales Sports Editor Mxs3279@lockhaven.edu It is imperative that journalists fact check their sources. When journalists don’t fact check their sources they put their credibility on the line. Once a journalist loses their credibility, it’s hard for them to gain it back. The theme of journalists and their credibility being at stake has recently become even more prevalent since administration within our government has changed. President Trump strongly dislikes the majority of journalists. President Trump has repeatedly accused journalists of releasing “fake news.” This has placed a label on journalists now more than ever, so it is especially important that journalists fact check the people that they speak with.

A journalist’s job is solely to deliver the facts. (Brewer, 2011) states that journalism is about finding facts and then sharing the information with those who read, watch and or listen to the journalist that is presenting the information.

A journalist as a fact checker should observe what’s going on, ask questions and begin to uncover facts and then deliver the message. There is no point in selling a story or message if it’s false. A journalist’s due diligence is to do what other people don’t want to do. Journalists get their feet dirty to uncover the truth with facts. Journalists speak on facts, not their opinion, when it comes to the truth. The importance of this “Fact Checking” article for the school is to understand that a journalist’s job is to tell the truth and tell the facts. You can do neither without fact checking.

The movie “Resurrecting the Champ” is the perfect example of what it means to be factual. In “Resurrecting the Champ” Samuel L. Jackson (Champ) pretends to be a famous boxer that won all of these

matches, and now he’s homeless and not up on his feet anymore. Josh Hartnett (Erik) the journalist sells this story about Champ, but in reality Champ wasn’t who he said he was. It just so happens that Erik’s dad was a famous journalist and he wanted to live up to his fathers’ name.

However, this didn’t help Erik’s circumstances at all; he then had to apologize for selling a fake story as well as own up to his son and his son’s classmates. Erik had to prove himself because he didn’t fact check, and he ultimately told a fake story to the public.

In Johnston’s “Fact Checking,” he asks which organization’s analysis was the most helpful when it came to talking about Mitt Romney’s commercial about President Obama’s welfare recipient requirements. I found that FactCheck. org was convenient because they went straight to the point of what was true and false, and readers tend to like that.

The Washington Post Fact Checker was the only one to assess Obama’s counterclaim, and they also went through the history of the welfare reform. I find this to be the most helpful because it represents both sides as well as includes the history of the welfare reform. I find this to be the most helpful because there is

always more than one side. The way the Washington Post Fact Checker went about things is also helpful because not all readers may know about the welfare reform’s history, so background information makes it easier to dissect, analyze, critique and comprehend. Each of the three organizations were sure to check if Obama’s administration “just sent welfare checks” without any requirements.

It is possible that all three of the organizations came to different conclusions because different businesses and people do things differently. Not only this, but they may have gotten their information from different sources. The organizations very well may have different points of view as well. It’s important to understand that in this case the overall goal of fact checking was to tell the truth to the public of what’s really happening in terms of welfare. This is ultimately the goal of fact checking in general: find the truth and find out what’s really happening. As a reporter, according to (Deahl,2017), reporters as fact checkers have to do a lot of verifying their statements and making various phone calls to insure that the facts are the facts. The double checked has to be double checked. Depending on the story, journalists should take anywhere from a couple days to a couple months to maybe even a year of fact checking and or of following a story in order to get the truth and the facts of the story. They must then check the facts that have been received in the process.

I believe the stories that need the most fact checking have to do with politics, celebrities and the crimes and or lifestyle actions that they may take part in.

It is imperative that journalists fact check everything they say and do. That is their livelihood as it puts their name, their title and their credibility at stake if false information is sold to the public eye.

10 All About Corrective Eye Surgery Ben Ronemus Staff Writer Bjr1324@lockhaven.edu If you are tired of wearing contacts or glasses, having your vision corrected surgically may be something to consider.

There are many pros and cons to electing to undergo vision corrective surgery. The first thing to consider however, is which surgery to undergo. There are a couple surgeries to consider, but the main ones are LASIK and Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK).

Both surgeries are similar and produce the same result.

However, the procedures themselves differ along with recovery time. LASIK takes longer in the operating room, but recovery time is significantly shorter. PRK on the other hand will take only 5 to 10 minutes in the operating room, but recovery time will be weeks to months. The initial couple days after a PRK procedure will be significantly less comfortable as compared to LASIK as well. The longer recovery period and increased discomfort are main reasons why more people choose LASIK over PRK. If you are like me, however, PRK will be your only option.

If during your pre-operative examinations the optometrist finds that you have thin corneas, then PRK will be your only option. Some people also choose PRK over LASIK because it is more durable. LASIK leaves a flap of tissue to heal back in place over your eye, where in PRK the flap is completely removed. If the flap left by LASIK is disturbed by trauma such as a blow to the eye, it can cause vision problems. For these two reasons, PRK is a better option than LASIK for some people.

There a several cons to vision corrective surgery. One of

the major issues is expense. A decent procedure will cost a few thousand dollars. The payment will include all follow up appointments and any needed touch ups, however, it is still a large sum of money especially for college students.

Fortunately, there are payment programs that are available and the procedure can be paid off over the course of months to years with little to no interest. Another potential issue is recovery. Recovery is more of an issue for PRK than LASIK, however, both procedure will require the recipient to wear sunglasses for weeks to months afterwards due to sensitivity to light. The discomfort associated with PRK is also a major con, especially the pain experienced the first four to five days after the procedure.

There is one huge pro to vision corrective surgery. That is a huge improvement to vision. Most people, regardless of which surgery is received, will either reach 20/20 vision or something very close. If you are someone who has had terrible uncorrected vision your entire life, it will be life changing. There will no longer be a need to worry about glasses or contacts. Having perfect vision is a big enough pro for most people to cancel out all of the cons.

Vision corrective surgery can be a costly and uncomfortable experience, however, your vision is worth every bit of what you put into it. As a recipient of PRK, I would definitely recommend at least scheduling a consultation at a local office that offers vision corrective surgery; they are often free. My last piece of advice would be to not go too cheap.

There are surgeons out there who will do the procedure for only a few hundred dollars, but they are often sketchy and not worth the risk. Find a reputable establishment with a realistic price and take advantage of the free consultation.

Remember that your vision will affect the rest of your life and is worth investing in.

Yappy Hour Halloween Staff Reports Robert Pignatello, President of Lock Haven University, invited students, community members and staff on Oct. 30. for the second Yappy Hour dog walk and social. The specially themed “Yappy Halloween” event featured a dog costume contest judged by Clinton County Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Board President Mary Jo Williamson.

Costume contest winner Barley, owned by Nicole Rall-Miller and

her daughter Megan Miller, earned a $50 LHU bookstore gift certificate. Contest runner-up was Benji, a 1 year old male terrier mix and current SPCA resident who is up for adoption.

“Benji loves to play with people and other dogs. He is neutered and up-to-date on all vaccinations. He’s a sweet dog in need of a forever family,”said Williamson .

LHU’s next Yappy Hour will be held at 4 p.m. on November 27.

OPINION #FeelTheBern might make a comeback in 2020 Alexis Gallagher

Opinions Editor aag9585@lockhaven.edu Democrats won control of the House of Representatives on Tuesday and continue to ride the ‘Blue Wave’. They ride a wave of energy in opposition towards Trump, which generated during his first days in office.

Although Trump boasted of “tremendous successes” after the election, it was clear that Democrats had won the minimum seats needed. After a series of wins down the East Coast and throughout the Midwest, Republicans suffered a drastic defeat in the House.

In the campaign’s closing weeks, Democrats swept over commericals and advertisments to focus their messages on Republican attempts to roll back health insurance. Winning back the House created a new focus on everything from the release of Trump’s elusive tax returns to limit of the administration’s ability to fund for the U.S.-Mexico border wall.

“For the past two years, we’ve watched this administration attack and undermine our democratic institutions and values. Today, we say enough,” Hillary Clinton wrote in a series of tweets.

“But we won’t just vote against radicalism, bigotry, and corruption today. We’ll vote for fantastic candidates all over the country—including a historic number of women—who want to raise wages, fight for justice, and help more people get health care,” she tweeted. “If they win, they’ll do great things for America. Let’s exercise our birthright as Americans today, put those people in office, and continue the hard work of saving our democracy. It’ll take all of us. Happy Election Day.” Trump made a comment after the election and continues to claim it’s a “big win” for him. “Yesterday was such a very Big Win, and all under the pressure of a Nasty and Hostile Media!” Trump wrote in a series of tweets Wednesday morning. “To any of the pundits or talking heads that do not give us proper credit for this great Midterm Election, just remember two words - FAKE NEWS!” Benrie Sanders made a comment about the elections prior to Tuesday, and says it will determine whether Americans are comfortable with a president who is a “pathological liar.” In an interview with CNN, he argued that Trump lies about “every possible thing.”

“What this election is really about is whether we feel comfortable about having a president who is a pathological liar,” Sanders told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday night. “And whether we as Americans are comfortable having a president who tries to divide us up, divide us up based on the color of our skin or the country we came from or our sexual orientation or our religion,” Sanders added. “And ultimately, I don’t think the American people want us to move in that direction.”

Currently, Bernie is considered a top potential candidate in 2020.

Sanders himslef has campaigned across the country in recent months for Democratic candidates aligned with his messages. Sanders had visited 32 states since the 2016 election. He has raised about $1.8 million for fellow candidates, with that total to exceed $2 million by the end of the election cycle.

“Now Trump, he’s a very, very tough guy,” Sanders told about 3,000 people in this college town, “He’s a very, very strong guy when he tears little children at the border from the arms of their mothers. What a tough guy. But he ain’t such a tough guy when he has to deal with Putin … He is not such a tough guy when he has to deal with his billionaire friends in Saudi Arabia, who just tortured and murdered a courageous journalist.”

If he runs in 2020, the challenges will be stiff. In part because of Sanders’ focusing on issues ranging from health care to the minimum wage, the Democratic Party has shifted closer to his leftist profile since the 2016 election, and Sanders will almost certainly face opposition from other high-profile progressives. Sanders claims he is well aware his age might become an issue, but if he decides to run in the election, he is prepared.

When we remove this lawless, criminal president from office we can truly start the long, difficult process of repairing America, and restoring our status in the world.

OPINION Millennials and their obsession with astrology Alexis Gallagher

Opinions Editor aag9585@lockhaven.edu We’re a generation that largely resists labels and refuses to be categorised, so it’s curious that so many millennials obsessively read their horoscopes.

According to a study, 58 percent of 18-24 year olds believe astrology is scientific. The study also revealed that skepticism of astrology is decreasing, and indeed you don’t have to look far online to find the strong community of young, cool, perfectly normal people who obsess over their zodiac signs.

One of the most common parts of astrology that interests millennials is the idea of compatibility - that is, certain star signs getting on better with others.

Astrology ascribes meaning to the placement of the sun, the moon, and the planets within 12 sections of the sky—the signs of the zodiac. You likely know your sun sign, the most famous zodiac sign, even if you don’t completely follow astrology.

It’s based on where the sun was on your birthday. But the placement of the moon and each of the other planets at the time and location of your birth adds additional shades to the picture of you painted by your “birth chart.”

Astrology expresses complex ideas about personality, life cycles and relationship patterns through the shorthand of the planets and zodiac symbols. People also tend to turn to astrology in times of stress. A small 1982 study by the psychologist Graham Tyson found that “people who consult astrologers” did so in response to stressors in their lives.

This particular stress is “linked to the individual’s social roles and to his or her relationships,” Tyson wrote. “Under conditions of high stress, the individual is prepared to use astrology as a coping device even though under low-stress conditions he does not believe in it.”

According to American Psychological Association survey data, Millennials have been the most stressed generation since 2014 and the generation most likely to say their stress has increased in the past year since 2010.

Millennials and Gen Xers have been significantly more stressed than older generations since 2012. And Americans as a whole have seen increased stress levels because of the political tumult since the 2016 presidential election.

The 2017 edition of the APA’s survey found that 63 percent of Americans said they were significantly stressed about their country’s future.

Fifty-six percent of people said that reading the news stresses them out, and Millennials and Gen Xers were significantly more likely than older people to say so. Lately that news often deals with political infighting, climate change, global crises and the threat of nuclear war.

If stress makes astrology look shinier, it’s not surprising that more millennials seem to be drawn to it now. Astrology offers those in crisis the comfort of imagining a better future, a tangible reminder of that clichéd truism that is nonetheless hard to remember when you’re in the thick of it: This too shall pass.

A combination of stress and uncertainty about the future is an ailment for which astrology can seem like the perfect balm.

It does give one a pleasing orderly sort of feeling, not unlike alphabetizing a library, to take life’s random events and emotions and slot them

into helpfully labeled shelves. This guy isn’t texting me back because Mercury retrograde probably kept him from getting the message. I take such a long time to make decisions because my Mars is in Taurus. My boss will finally recognize all my hard work when Jupiter enters my tenth house.

“We are increasingly turning to unreality as a form of escape and a way to search for other kinds of freedom, truth and meaning,” J . Walter Thompson’s intelligence group trend report “Unreality” read. “What emerges is an appreciation for magic and spirituality, the knowingly unreal, and the intangible aspects of our lives that defy big data and the ultra-transparency of the web.”

It might be that Millennials are more comfortable living in the borderlands between skepticism and belief because they’ve spent so much of their lives online, in another space that is real and unreal at the same time. That so many people find astrology meaningful is a reminder that something doesn’t have to be real to feel true.

People feel powerless here on Earth, so they’re turning to the stars.

Some found it to be an escape from logical “left-brain” thinking; others craved the order and organization the complex system brought to the chaos of life. It’s both. That’s the point, after all.

To understand astrology’s appeal is to get comfortable with paradoxes. It feels simultaneously cosmic and personal; spiritual and logical; ineffable and concrete; real and unreal. It can be a relief, in a time of division, not to have to choose. It can be freeing, in a time that values black and white, ones and zeros, to look for answers in the gray. It can be meaningful to draw lines in the space between moments of time, or the space between pinpricks of light in the night sky, even if you know deep down they’re really light-years apart, and have no connection at all.

Intramural Basketball Kicks Off Playoffs Lucus Lenze

Guest Writer lwl5866@lockhaven.edu Intramural basketball playoffs began Monday, with four quarter final games, played at the REC center.

There were two games played at 6 p.m., one at 7 p.m., and one game at 8 p.m. The top eight teams in the league made the playoffs.

The first game of the night saw the number one seed Prestige Worldwide, take on the number eight seed Nameless team. Prestige jumped out to an early lead in this one and never looked back. The way that they move the ball around paired with a great 3-point shooting percentage and lock down in your face defense helped them roll over the #8 seed. Prestige went on to win the game 94-41.

The other game being played at the time was between number four seed Double Stuff vs. number 5 seed 3 Guys Pizza. Double Stuff was undefeated for most of the regular season, until running into the wall that is Prestige. Dropping all the way down to the number four seed, they came in wanting to prove they were still a top team in the league. They did just that, coming out and rolling to a 100-68 victory over a very good 3 Guys Pizza team.

The 7 o’clock game had the number two seed, Circle Dirk squared off against the #7 seed, North Side. Going into the first timeout of the game, the score was tied up at 14 with just over 5 minutes left in the opening half. When halftime came the score was still tied, now 20-20. Coming out of the half Circle

Dirk pulled away jumping out to a lead of as much as 15 points at one time. North Side couldn’t rally back and Circle Dirk went on to win 47-33. Haneef Johnson led North Side with 16 points hitting a hand full of 3’s, while Circle Dirks scoring came from everyone on the team racking up an equal amount of points.

The night cap saw the #3 seed Double G’s go up against the number 6 seed Rick team who was looking to pull off an opening round upset. This game, being a back and forth affair, neither side giving an inch to the other. Late in the first half Rick pulled away after hitting four 3’s in a row to give them a 32-25 lead going into halftime.

The second half was just the same as the first, Double G’s rallied back to tie the game and then it was more back and forth. Double G’s Darrin Manning, shooting unconscious from behind the arc nailed some huge 3’s of his own to bring them all the way back to down one late in the game. The game which was already a thriller got a lot more interesting when Double G’s tied the game at the end and the game went into overtime. The overtime was filled with psychical play by both teams and was a nail-biting finish. A blown coverage from the defense gave Rick the go-ahead basket with 15 seconds left. Double G’s came down the court with a chance to win and couldn’t get a shot to fall in the final seconds. Rick upset the number 3 seed by a score of 65-64, Markeem Walker led Double G’s with 23 points and Eric Huling led Rick with a game high 28 points.

Semi-finals will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Prestige Worldwide takes on Double Stuff in a rematch from earlier this year and Rick plays Circle Dirk, looking for another upset. Come down and enjoy some great basketball if you have the chance.

Kyle Shoop named PSAC Wrestler of the Week Doug Spatafore

Sports Information Director dpatofo@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Week 1 of the 2018-19 NCAA Division I wrestling season is in the books and Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) of the Lock Haven University wrestling team got off to a quick start. He went 5-0 on the way to the 141-pound title at the Clarion Open Saturday (Nov. 3) and was rewarded by being named this week’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athlete of the Week.

Shoop, a redshirt-junior, went 5-0 and cruised to the individual title in a deep 141-pound field at the Clarion Open, the Bald Eagles’ season-opener Saturday.

In his first three bouts of the day, Shoop – a two-time NCAA DI Tournament qualifier - didn’t surrender a single point, thanks to a tournament-opening 16-0 tech fall (2:30), a 5-0 decision and a dominating 12-0 major. The three lopsided wins helped Shoop move to 3-0 and he made it four straight wins, thanks to a clinical 11-7 decision over LJ Bentley of Pittsburgh in the semifinals.

In the finals, Shoop recorded his second tech fall of the day, an 18-2 win, which clinched the title and helped Shoop remain undefeated.

Moyer leads All Conference Trio as LHU places 5th at PSAC Championship

EDINBORO, Pa. – For the first time in school history the Bald

Eagles crowned three All-Conference runners, as the Lock Haven University women’s cross country team soared to a fifth-place showing today at the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.

Laurel Moyer (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain), Cadie Kiser (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) and Amanda Shultz (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) all ran to All-Conference honors by way of their top-30 finishes. It marked the first time in school history where the LHU women have had three runners achieve All-Conference status in the same conferencechampionship race.

As a team, the Bald Eagles finished fifth out of 17 teams and LHU was just two points behind fourth-place Seton Hill.

Moyer was fourth overall with a time of 24:08 (6K). Her fourth-place finish marked the best showing from a Bald Eagle since Shala Simms placed sixth in 2005. No LHU woman runner had placed fourth at the PSAC Championships since 1988.

Kiser was 15th with a time of 24:42. Both Moyer and Kiser ran to All-Conference honors last season as well.

Shultz, an All-Conference runner back in 2016, was 30th today (25:33) and she’s now a two-time All-Conference performer.

Morgan Perry (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) had a huge day and finished as Lock Haven’s No. 4 runner. She was 50th overall with a time of 26:12. Caroline Stickley (Atglen, Pa./Octorara) placed 57th with a run of 26:26.

Several members of the LHU men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete at LHU’s own Go-Fast River Run, set for Saturday, November 10. The 2018 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships are set for Saturday, November 17.
