Employment expert coming to speak at LHU Conne Reece & Kylee Doyle

Guest Writers Creece@lockhaven.edu & kld8928@lockhaven.edu Employment expert Fred Coon will be making a presentation entitled It’s Not About Job Search on Wednesday, October 24th at 7:00 P.M. in the PUB Multipurpose Room. The purpose of the presentation is to teach attendees how to present themselves to potential employers as valuable additions to their organizations. The presentation is open to the university community and general public.

Coon holds the position of CEO and Chairman of Stewart, Cooper & Coon, which is an international human capital management strategies firm. Additionally, he is a Licensed Employment Agent, a Nationally Certified Job and Career Transition Coach, Behavioral Consultant, and a Certified Disc Administrator. He recently published a new book titled Hire the EQ, not the IQ, which piggybacks subjects discussed in his two other best-selling books, Leveraging LinkedIn for Job Search Success and Ready, Aim, Hired: Survival Tactics for Job and Career Transition.

Coon, an accomplished banjo artist, will also be performing at Avenue 209 on Tuesday, October 23 at 7:00 P.M. Students, staff, and community members are encouraged to attend the performance at LHU’s local coffeehouse.

Celebrating Hispanic heritage with the World Cup Poetry Slam winner

News Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Joaquin Zihuatanejo, the winner of the World Cup of Poetry Slam, visited on Oct. 11 LHU to celebrate the end of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage Month is runs from Sep. 15 until Oct. 15. The month is a time to recognize the contributions hispanic and Latino Americans have made to the heritage and culture we have today during this time in the United States.

This celebration started as a week-long jubilation established by Edward R. Roybal and passed into law by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968. It wouldn’t be until 20 years later that the Hispanic Heritage Week would be extended to the month-long celebration it is today.

The first Hispanic Heritage Month was in September

1988. The 15th was chosen as the start date because it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries with three other countries shortly following suit.

To celebrate at LHU, Zihuatanejo had students partner with each other and draw different parts of their faces. Not only does this activity show the diversity of artistic abilities, but it also shows the diversity of the students themselves. Zihuatanejo then shared about his experiences growing up and his journey as a poet, sharing several poems from his books.

“This month is a celebration of diversity and diversity, like poetry, is one of theses things that make life worth living,” he said.

HOPE Center to host Domestic Violence Awareness Vigil Derek Danneker Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu The HOPE Center will be hosting a domestic violence awareness vigil, Monday, in Rogers Gym, where a Lock Haven University students and adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse will speak on her perspective.

Kayla Schneider, a member of the Children’s Justice Act Task Force of the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, said,“I never want them to think they are alone,” in a 2014 Lancaster Online interview.

In 2012, Schneider and three other girls testified in court to secure the imprisonment of Michael Archacki to up to 65 years in prison.

Today, Schneider is working to help others who have been sexually abused.

“I don’t believe the road to healing will ever be over for me. I will never forget my abuse. But I am hopeful for the future and my life. I’m happy and now want to focus on helping others,”she said

Welcome to the Hunger Bowl Derek Danneker Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven Community Service Office is inviting clubs, organizations as well as faculty and staff to participate in the 10th annual LHU Hunger Bowl which started on Oct. 15 and will run to Nov. 16.

Chrissy Wise, who started as assistant director of student engagement of the Community Service Office in August, says the bowl is a competition to see who can collect the most non-perishable items for local food pantries and food banks.

“We are partnering with some of the ones closest food banks in the area, this time of year they are really desperate for supplies for the upcoming holiday season,” she said.

The Salvation Army, YMCA, Blanchard Church of Christ and Helping Hands will all be receiving donations this year.

“It’s a great way to get the university involved in the community. It’s a way of us giving back to some needy families in the area,” Wise said.

Clubs can organizations can still enter when they turn in their nonperishable food.

The winner will be chosen on a point scale and announced through email and will win the LHU Hunger Bowl Trophy Points can be gained through creating a hunger awareness poster, coordinating and collecting non-perishable food items from community drop off sites locally, volunteering at any soup kitchen or food pantry program or helping the Community service office sort and load the food times for delivery to area food banks.

Points can also be gained by watching “Poverty, Inc”. on Nov. 6.

Wise says “Poverty, Inc” changes the way students think about global poverty and helps them give differently.

“All these charities just giving money and food donations, it doesn’t solve the problem of poverty in the world. They need education on how to self sustain,” she said.

Helping others can also help students, says Wise.

“If you’re in a club and you believe strongly in your club participating in this, there’s a lot of leadership skills and abilities that can be gained from it, learning how to communicate with people and organizing,” she said.

The LHU Community Service Office will also host: Adopt-aFamily, Oct. 22 to Dec 7, where students will receive a wishlist from families in need; Paint the town Crimson Cleanup day, Oct. 25; and Clinton County Housing Authority Fall Festival, Oct. 25.

“Norsemen”: “Monty Python” meets “Vikings” Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu Riding off of the “Vikings” success, a historical drama series set in 8th Century Scandinavia, “Norsemen” reimagines the time period as an era of bubbling, insensitive and naive pillagers whose clan is undergoing internal power-struggles.

Arvid, played by Nils Jørgen Kaalstad, finds himself chieftain of his clan whose primary entertainment and income is raiding the lands to the West. Utterly a man of his time, he sees nothing wrong with violently accruing wealth from Britain.

In one scene, he and his band rush towards members of a church who are celebrating the donations they’ve received to open a new hospital for children. Arvid and his clan celebrate what they see as a great day and upon returning to his village, he rejoices that the gods must be happy with him because he made it back safely.

Orm, played by Kåre Conradi, sees himself as rightful heir to be chieftain. He works to manipulate his way to the top through different means, all while giving hilarious hints to his apparent homosexuality which is completely foreign to most people of the time period.

When Orm does find himself in power, he decides to make the village a cultural center through silly means. The villagers watch as he collects all of their weapons, welds them together into a hideous looking art piece and directs slaves, using a diagram, to create an amphitheater. However, the village is soon attacked while they’re defenseless and the slaves create a tiny amphitheater that is on the same scale as the diagram.

Borrowing from “Monty Python”, the residents of the village are often confused, and go along with whatever nonsense presents itself.

In the opening scene the older men of the village arrive at the top of a cliff, and are asked by a slave if they are ready for the Ättestupa, a tradition where the men who can no longer provide elect to jump off a cliff so their family doesn’t have to be burdened by them. They convince Bjorn to jump by telling him, “yeah, honor is really important,” and “this is about the most honorable thing you can do.”

After yelling “to valhalla!” Bjorn jumps. After watching him, the rest reconsider. “you know, I’m only 47. I’m not that old. I’m just going to skip the whole thing,” says one of them.

If quick witted shows that use nonsense logic to others to follow an incompetent leader to whatever end they want is your idea of hilarity, “Norsemen” is a show for you.

7 “Charmed” reboot review Kiara Carson

Arts & Entertainment Editor knc9459@lockhaven.edu The late 90’s TV series “Charmed” is back in business and totally reinvented, but is that necessarily a good thing? “Charmed” was first aired back in 1998 and lasted eight amazing years, producing eight seasons and giving everyone a phenomenal witchy experience all about one family – three sisters.

It was the end of a generation leaving people wanting more yet satisfied. The journey was over, but it was one that will never be forgotten. Now, it’s been rebooted into something different and unexpected yet similar to the original sisters. The first episode of the reboot was aired this past Monday and there has been an enormous response.

Some believe that it’s amazing, sticking to the original’s storyline just with different characters and actors, of course. Then, there are a lot of people who are against the reboot completely and think it’s absolutely horrible.

When the reboot was first announced, CW and the new cast all received backlash for remaking the show definitely starting off on the wrong foot. It was so scandalous to the original show’s fans, that even the original sisters each made their own statements about it.

Holly Marie Combs (Piper Halliwell) was the first one out of the three to speak on what an awful idea it was to continue what she and the others started and ended. Alyssa Milano (Phoebe Halliwell) was next to respond, but only to express that CW should’ve asked the original cast and production for their permission to start a reboot instead of taking it upon themselves to one-up all they’ve created with their version.

Surprisingly, out of all this negativity towards the reboot, Shannen Doherty (Prue Halliwell) is the only one to see the positivity in remaking “Charmed” and wishes the new cast the very best. Still in yet,

will the new outweigh the old and manage to stay in business? Many predict that the new series will be cancelled in no time at all, but it seems like there’ll be a huge fight between the new cast and fans to figure out their future – whether it’ll be short lived or out last their predecessors.

Busting through writer’s block Derek Danneker Editor-in-Chief Ddd4907@lockhaven.edu It’s official, we’re at the halfway point of the semester. If you’re like me, all the clever ideas you’ve had to start papers are used up, you’re left with a blank page and a slight anger at the professor who decided it was a good idea to have you write more.

Much like death and taxes, everyone experiences writer’s block.

It’s only natural. However, I’ve developed a knack for getting through it with a few clever tools.

But, before you start, read the prompt several times. The worst feeling in the world is finishing an essay, looking at the original prompt and realizing you’re completely off-topic. It’s humiliating to receive an assignment back and finding out that you weren’t addressing the topic at hand. Do yourself a favor, read and reread the

prompt.

The first step to writing is a mind-set. Things don’t have to be perfect. If you put words on paper, they can be improved. No one does everything perfectly the first time, so stop expecting the best imaginable words to start flowing out of your face. It doesn’t work like that. You need to accept this fact and move forward with whatever you’re thinking.

There isn’t a rule that says you need to start with the beginning.

In fact, the beginning has so many parts that determine the rest of your paper that you should - almost always- write it last.

Before I sit down to write a paper, I think of two or three good points that prove my position. I then write each part of the paper separately. Then I can see where they might fit together to find the smoothest flow of my points. Once you have all those points together in a way that makes sense, write the conclusion to wrap everything together. Finally, you can go back to the beginning to outline where you’re going to go with all of your points and hint at your conclusion.

In my opinion, outlines are overrated. They can help with complex papers that need multiple points substantiated with an over arching theme that can’t be lost. Otherwise, they can make the final essay seem too much like you’re only going through a checklist with the flow completely tossed out of the window. By the way, if you’re looking for a fancy word that means throwing something out of window, use defenestration.

When all else fails, go for a walk and drink some coffee to take a step back and think about it. It doesn’t do your head any favors to hit it against a blank page. The perfect opening for a paper often hits your head like a ton of bricks when you least expect it anyway.

The worst kinds of essays are the ones that are forced.

Also, give yourself some time. Working on papers the night before they’re due is a good way of ruining yourself before you even start. Some topics simply take time to develop in your mind before you can put them down on paper and that’s okay.

These are some helpful tips and tricks I’ve used, but the beautiful thing about writing is that you can do it in whatever way works best for you. So keep your mind open and your pages filled.

Be ambitious and optimistic Mia Swales Sports Editor Mxs3279@lockhaven.edu Life can be scary. Sometimes we don’t know which way to go or what to do. It is in our human nature to have why and how questions, especially being college students. After school we are going to go off to fulfill our dreams. Right now, we are getting our feet wet in order to explore and live out our dream. I’d be lying if I said everyday was sunshine and rainbows and everyone knows what they want to do or which way to turn. I’d also be lying if I said that everyday everyone feels ambitious and optimistic.

There are all sorts of ways to go about ambition and optimism.

We are here in college because of those very two characteristics, but it’s so easy to lose grip of them when we become consumed with stress or a spiral of negative events that take place on this journey of life. According to Mind Body Green, if you focus on solutions and not problems it gives you a sense of movement in the right direction

as well as hope which then forms optimism. One should also look at the current problem and look back and see if there has been any improvement. The smallest improvement is always something to be proud of; steady progress is good. Self- talk is imperative to optimism; what you speak will find its way to you. In this, sometimes you will have to be repetitive. Things don’t always just happen. Not only is self-talk imperative, but the patience with self-talk and results are just as important. Optimism can be a process, but anything is possible and doable when one talks themselves up and utilizes positive self-talk.

Eric Thomas once said, “when you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be successful.” The Great Performance Academy states that a way to an ambitious lifestyle is to not be scared to take risks, to invest time into your goal, to expose yourself to new methods of thought, to stay committed and to eliminate your negative thoughts.

Our success is in our own hands; whatever we want it starts with us. Opportunity helps us get to where and what we want, but ultimately everything in life starts with us. Whatever we want in life we can and will do if one only believes in oneself.

The Potato Life: Organization Cassie Keller News Editor Cmk2356@lockhaven.edu We all know college life is hard enough for a couch potato, but being an unorganized couch potato makes it near impossible. Here are a few organization hacks to help your potato life.

This first hack is for those forgetful potatoes who can’t remember where or when your classes are. All you have to do is take a picture of your schedule on your phone and set it as your lock background.

That way, whenever you look at your phone quickly, you can see your schedule until you have it completely memorized.

This next one is for those deep sleeper potatoes that usually sleep through your alarms. If you use the alarms on your phone, but they are never loud enough to wake you up, this hack will help you. All you need is a cup and before you go to sleep put the speaker end of your phone in the cup. Now you have an alarm that is louder!

Now, if you need a louder alarm but your phone needs to charge at night too, don’t worry! There is another hack that will work for you. You just need to take the cup and cut a hole big enough for your charger cord to fit through. Now your alarm will be a bit

louder and you’ll still be able to charge your phone.

This next hack is for when you are trying to get out your notebooks, but you always grab the wrong one. All you have to do is color the edges of your notebooks different colors. To make it easy to remember the colors for each class, you can mark the colors on your schedule before you take the picture. Now, your English notes won’t end up in your math notebook.

This next hack is for the potatoes that have scarfs that don’t really have a place to go. All you need are removable shower rings and a hanger. Just put the shower rings on a hanger and then just like that you have a place to hang all your scarfs.

Now, you might be running out of closet space since you now have scarfs crammed in there with your other clothes. There’s a hack for that too! For this hack, you have to save up some soda can tabs. Once you have enough, stick the top of the hangers through the holes and hang them together like that. Now, you’ll have even more closet space.

This last hack is for those potatoes that have a laptop that overheats easily. All you have to do is flip over a cup holder like the ones you’d get from a fast food restaurant and put your laptop on it. This way, air can get underneath the laptop where the heat is.

Living a Sustainable Life in College Evannah Phan Lifestyles Editor Etp7270@lockhaven.edu It is not a surprise that the place we call home, Earth, is undergoing catastrophic climate change effects. As college students, you may be asking why you should care about these effects and how hard it would be to live a sustainable life on campus.

First of all, you don’t have to go completely vegan or become die-hard minimalist to live more green in college.

There a number of small habits that you can implement into your lifestyle that will minimize your waste footprint and simplify your life.

A small lifestyle change that you can make is buying a reusable water bottle instead of using a plastic water bottle. You will be able to fill up your water bottle everywhere and will not have to spend money on getting cases of plastic water bottles from the store. If you are afraid of drinking tap water and prefer how the water tastes from a plastic water bottle, it is optimal to invest in some sort of water filter. They are inexpensive and easy to use for any college student. Another plus of using a reusable water bottle is that you may also get a discount at various coffee shops if you bring one in as well.

Another miniscule lifestyle change that you can make is using a reusable metal straw instead of using a disposable plastic straw. It is such a small change to make but the impact is incredible. By using a reusable straw, you can reduce your carbon foot print and help lower pollution. According to the Plastic Pollution Coalition, the United States uses over 500,000,000 plastic straw per day. That number is staggering and contributes to a huge plastic waste pollution

issue. Plastic straws are one of the most common items of trash found in the ocean. Although using reusable straws will not save the entire planet by itself, it is still a huge step towards decreasing pollution which will in turn decrease harm to the environment and marine life.

To reduce plastic waste even more, it is beneficial for students to invest in a reusable bag for when you go shopping. It is a small investment that will help reduce your personal carbon footprint as well as save you some money. Places like Target, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Kroger will give you a discount for every reusable bag that you use at their stores.

I don’t know about you but I love a good deal. As college students, we are living on our own and don’t have our parents to help us all the time. It is important to be thrifty and know how to save your money when you are living on a budget.

There are a few thrift stores around town that offer inexpensive furniture and clothing.

Goodwill also offers a student discount on Tuesdays.

It is important to cut down on water waste while you are at it. Conserve your water by turning off the faucet when you’re not using it. Take succinct showers and try to only do your laundry when you have a full load. Not only will it lessen your water waste but it will probably make your water bill go down as well.

There are so many other tips on how to live a sustainable life in college that I didn’t even mention. I hope that this peaked your interest and helped you realize that all of these little changes are tangible and worth making. Not only will living a sustainable life help reduce our individual and society’s use of the Earth’s natural resources, it will also save you money and time.

LaCroix’s ingredients are not as bad as you think Alexis Gallagher

Opinons Editor aag9585@lockhaven.edu Around two weeks ago, LaCroix was accused of containing an ingredient found in “cockroach insecticide”. LaCroix has drawn fans with its claims to be “natural” and free of many ingredients found in soda and bottled waters - sugars, calories, and artificial sweetners and flavors. The lawsuit filed by the law firm Beamont Costales argued that Lacroix includes “synthetic” ingredients, including limonene, which the lawsuit claims “can cause kidney toxicity and tumors,” as well as “linalool propionate, which is used to treat cancer. It is also reported to contain linalool, which is used in cockroach insecticide.”

This may sound like scary information, but even if the chemicals are in the water, raising alarm is similar to warning about the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide - a substance that is a major component in acid rain, known to corrode and oxidize metals, and be fatal if inhaled. Dyhydrogen mononxide is also better known by its common name, water.

Limonene, linalook propinate and linalool are common plant chemicals and are far less dangerous than they seem in the lawsuit’s description. Gary Reineccius, a flavor chemist at the University of Minnesota, stated that linalool is found in many fruits. “It’s a key to blueberry. If a blueberry didn’t have it, it would taste totally different,” Reineccius said.

Although it is true that linalool is found in some prooducts that control cockroaches, implying that linalool is a insecticide is like saying that citric acid (the chemical that makes lemons tart) is a paint remover, simply because you found it on the ingredient list at the hardware store. Limonene is another naturally occuring plant compound found in some cannabis starins, and linalool propionate is found in ginger, lavender, and sage oils.

The lawsuit claims that these ingredients have been listed by the Food and Drug Administrartion as synthetic, but that is misleading. It’s true that these three ingredients appear on the FDA’s lists of synthetic flavorings, but that is only because they can also be synthesized in a lab. When chemicals are made in a lab, the FDA calls them “artificial” flavoring, and when they are extracted from a plant or animal they are considered “natural”.

The issue is simply how these ingredients were produced, not what the ingredients in LaCroix are. In response, LaCroix’s parent company, National Beverage Corp., insists that “natural flavors in LaCroix are derived from natural essence oils from the named fruit used in each of the flavors.”

“From a scientific standpoint, there is really no difference from chemicals synthesized in a lab and the same chemicals extracted from plants.

There is no risk from one versus the other. The major difference is that they cost a lot more to derive from plants than to make in a lab. It’s exactly the same chemical, but you’re going to pay three to five times more for the natural one. The customer pays through the nose, it’s foolishness,” Reineccuis said.

The FDA currently does not have any official definition of what “natural” means when applied to a whole product. Deborah Kotz, an FDA press officer, said the agency would expect the term “natural” to mean that nothing artifical or synthetic had been added. Thus, they called for a public comment on the use of the term natural, and the agency is currently reviewing these comments.

Flavor historian, Nadia Berenstein, stated “the idea of ‘natural’ is undefined, but from a cultural standpoint the word tends to evoke a mystique of pureness or wholesomeness. The relative naturalness of various foods started to become important to consumers when food production became industrialized. This made it difficult for people to know what happened to their food between the farm and the grocery store.” Justifiably or not, the term ‘natural’ may give consumers a reassuring sense of purity and a belief that the product is free from adulteration.

The ingredients and techniques you use to create a “natural” drink at home may not be well-suited for commerical production. If you’re thirsty, you might squeeeze a little grapefruit juice into sparkling water to creat a fizzy, fruity drink. This is completely different than a drink that has to be commercially sold. “It has to be relatively uniform, it has to be shelf stable, it has to conform to safety regulations,” Berenstein said. The squirt of juice might perk up a glass of seltzer at home, but when the beverage is produced at an industrial scale, the juice could be subject to issues like sedimentation and oxidation that make the end product less appealing.

Food chemists use tools and laboratories to create products that taste well when they reach your table. When you read the phrase “natural flavor” on a label, you might assume it contains an extract from that specific flavor, but in many cases it does not. For example, on a coconut flavored item, you may think it contains extract of coconuts, but in fact some flavoring is actually derived from the fermentation of castor oil. “It makes a beautiful coconut flavor, and it’s perfectly safe and wholesome,” Reineccius said. “You can label it ‘all-natural,’ but it’s not from a coconut.”

Sarash Taber, a food scientist, pointed out on Twitter that the whole reason that bug killers might contain ingredients like linalool in the first place, because “makers realize people don’t want to spray ‘chemicals’ in their house to get rid of bugs, and prefer natural plant-based repellents.”

Turns out, there’s no way around it: All the products we buy contain chemicals.

#HimToo: what numbers say about false reports of assaults Alexis Gallagher

Opinions Editor aag9585@lockhaven.edu After Judge Brett Kavanaugh was accused of sexual assault, you probably saw a lot of posts about sexual assault all over social media. #MeToo and #WhyIDidntReport said we should always believe women in the situtation, but currently men are claiming they are under attack. Thus, this is creating a new hashtag, #HimToo. Let’s look at the facts: False reports of sexual assults are incredibly rare compared to unreported sexual assaults. At least eight studies have looked into this claim and only 2-10 percent of reports were false. Only 9% of men are sexually assaulted, while 91% of women are. Every 1 in 3 women are raped (that is as likely as the chance of rain in New York City), every 98 seconds a woman is sexually assaulted, and 1 out of 5 women are targets of sexual assault in college.

Last week, a mom’s #HimToo on Twitter claimed that her Navy son vet was afraid to go on “solo dates due to the current climate of false sexual accusations by radical feminists with an axe to grind” went viral.

The Trump family has stoked the anxiety, too. Donald Trump claims false allegations make it a “very scary time for young men in America.”

Many times, when people claim that that a women survivor is making the assault up, they say that she wanted to ruin the person’s life for passing them over an opportunity at work or treating them badly on a date. There is an insane amount of trouble someone would have to go

throughto make up a story about a sexual assault that never happened, and then defend it. A lot of the times, the person accused is in a position of power (think: Bill Cosby and Brett Kavanaugh), which means the person accusing them has to go through an uphill battle to change how people see that person.

It can be easier to believe that someone is lying about sexual assaults, than to imagine a person that we trusted to do something so heinous as sexual assault. Yet statistics and stories that came out of #MeToo tell us that survivors deserve (and need) to be trusted.

SPORTS Wrestling ranked #19 by InterMat, four Bald Eagles listed in individual rankings Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafp@lockhaven.edu MINNEAPOLIS – The Lock Haven University wrestling team has been listed at No. 19 in InterMat’s Preseason Tournament rankings and InterMat’s Preseason Dual rankings, and a total of four individuals were listed among the top-20 in their respective weight class, including returning All-American Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./ Kennard-Dale) who is ranked No. 3 at 165 pounds.

Also ranked for Lock Haven is Alex Klucker (Summerdale, Pa./East Pennsboro), Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) and Thomas Haines (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco).

Klucker is ranked No. 18 at 157, Hazel No. 19 at 184 and Haines No. 8 at 285.

Marsteller, Klucker, Hazel and Haines were all NCAA Division I national qualifiers last season for Lock Haven.

The Bald Eagles will be announcing information regarding their 2018 Crimson & White Dual in the coming days. The event is slated for Friday, October 26.

Women’s Soccer jumps to No.4 in regional rankings, recieves votes in national poll

Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team is unbeaten over its last six games and the Bald Eagles have made a big jump in this week’s Atlantic Region rankings. This week, LHU is ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches’ Division II Atlantic Region women’s soccer rankings and the Bald Eagles also received votes in this week’s national poll.

Two weeks ago, LHU returned to the regional rankings for the first time since 2012 and the Bald Eagles have made a major jump thanks to their four-match win streak and six-game unbeaten run (5-0-1). The four-game win streak is the first 2007 and LHU eyes its first five-game win streak since 2004.

Last week, the Lock Haven University women’s soccer team moved back into the regional rankings for the first time since 2012, and this week the Bald Eagles continue to climb higher in this week’s United Soccer Coaches’ Division II Atlantic Region women’s soccer rankings.

Overall, LHU is 7-2-1 with all contests coming in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.

LHU was ranked No. 8 on September 25 and Lock Haven was ranked No. 7 last week in the Atlantic Region rankings.

During the 2003 and 2004 seasons, there were several weeks where Lock Haven received votes in the national rankings, but the Bald Eagles haven’t cracked the top-25 since finishing the 2002 season ranked No. 12.

Lock Haven will host Mercyhurst on Friday, October 12 at 11 a.m. at Hubert Jack Stadium before a huge PSAC match at West Chester on Sunday.

Rudy collects historic victory, reaches 600-win mark Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu On Friday, the Lock Haven University field hockey team did something that it often does. The team, led by head coach Pat Rudy, won.

Winning goes hand-and-hand with LHU field hockey and a big reason why, is Rudy. After all, Friday's 2-0 win at Davidson marked the 600th in her Hall of Fame head coaching career.

Collecting 600 career wins didn't come overnight for Rudy, who is in her 23rd season coaching at The Haven, her alma mater, and this 2018 season marks her 41st overall season coaching at the collegiate level.

Rudy entered the 2018 season with 593 wins which already served as the third-most in the history of college field hockey. Now, at 600 wins on the dot, she remains at No. 3 all-time. Prior to Rudy, just two field hockey coaches in the history of NCAA field hockey had reached, and surpassed that elusive 600-win mark.

Earlier this season, Rudy claimed her 350th win at LHU and she's now 600-219-21 all-time. Her career win percentage to date is .727, which ranks among the top-25 all-time and has her listed among the top-five for active head coaches.

On the way to 600, Rudy has built quite the resume. She has coached three teams to NCAA Championships, including the 2000LHU team that won the Division II title. Rudy led SUNY-Cortland to DIII back-to-back national titles in 1993 and 1994.

She's coached nearly 40 All-Americans and countless All-Region and All-Conference players.

It's also safe to say field hockey at The Haven today, wouldn't be what it is without Rudy, a former standout player at LHU, who scored 65 goals from 1973-76, before graduating in 1977.

One of Rudy's most notable accomplishments has been the guidance of Lock Haven back to NCAA Division I play and into the prestigious Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10).

Since returning to DI play, Rudy has led Lock Haven to over 200 wins. Back in 2004, LHU's return season at the Division I level, the Bald Eagles went 19-1 and they've never looked back.

Entering this season, Lock Haven was 202-89 at DI, and currently Rudy and the Bald Eagles are 209-94 vs. NCAA Division I opponents since that return-season in 2004.

National titles, a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Hall of Fame honor in January (2018) and 600 wins highlight an already remarkable career for Rudy.

There is no doubt however, Rudy is focused on the next game, and with that in mind, the future is extremely bright for LHU field hockey.
