2018 Annual fire safety and security report Ben Ronemus

Staff Writer bjr1324@lockhaven.edu Lock Haven University Public Safety recently released the 2018 Annual Fire Safety and Security Report.

The report contains statistics concerning last year’s fire safety and crime statistics reaching back the last three years.

According to the statistics outlined in the report, reported crime has for the most part went down since 2015.

The rate of reported rapes on-campus stayed about the same with 3 occurring in 2017 which is almost equal to the 4 that occurred in 2015 and the 4 in 2016.

On-campus burglary dropped since 2015. 11 reported burglaries occurred in 2015, then only 4 in 2016. In 2017 only 2 reported burglaries occurred.

The on-campus rate of reported dating violence also decreased from 6 in 2015 to 2 in 2016. The number dropped even lower to 1 in 2017.

On-campus liquor law violations decreased from 60 in 2015 to 34 in 2016 and 34 again in 2017.

The drug law violation statistics is one of the only numbers to increase from 2015. The statistic actually decreased from 35 on-campus arrests in 2015 to 16 in 2016. It then spike up to 46 in 2017.

For the fire safety portion, the only pertinent numbers were the number of drills held in each dorm in 2017, which was on average 8 to 9 drills per dorm. There were no fires on-campus in 2017.

NEWS Students struggle to see counselors, Pignatello authorizes new hire Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu LHU president Robert Pignatello authorized the hiring of an additional full-time counselor Sept. 27, but waiting is still a recurring theme to students who are in need of counseling.

Dan Tess, director of counseling, says everyone’s caseload is full.

“We still are doing what we can to avoid a waiting list. We have 90 students already for fall 2018 and with the 36 students from summer 2018, we have 126 students for the AY 2018-2019 Reporting Data Cycle,” said Dan Tess, .

Donna Wilson, provost, says she works with the Counseling Services staff every year to monitor several data points, including whether there is a waitlist and to compare LHU’s staffing levels to national standards.

“I had earlier recommended to the president that we add a half-time counselor to the center, based on our prediction of the additional load the PSAC/NCAA mental health checklist is likely to bring. The President authorized addition of a full-time counselor; that search will begin this fall,”said Wilson.

Mansfield University, another Pennsylvania state system university with a population of 1,836 (1,451 students less than LHU), currently maintains five counselors, including a counselor on-call for crisis situations after regular hours in the fall and spring semesters, despite a 34 percent drop in enrollment since 2010. The counseling services at LHU currently employs a psychologist, a counselor and two part-time interns for a university population of 3,287.

“It’s just not possible,” said a junior social work major. “I got in because I had someone to advocate for me. If I didn’t and

I wasn’t 100 percent honest with absolutely everything that was going on there’s no way that I would’ve been seen. And to be completely honest, there’s people on this campus that probably could’ve used those services more than I could’ve. I was open with exactly what was going on, which is something that most clients won’t do right away.”

In her distress, the social work student was greeted by applications, questionnaires and the promise of a callback. This is often the case as counselors need to maximize their time.

“I was desperate and needed to talk to someone very soon, I went in, very miserable and crying, and informed someone there that I could not wait a few weeks. They apologized and said that it was the policy. I sat in the hallway crying,” said Breanna Herriman, a senior business administration major.

“Luckily one of the counselors came around the corner. I told her what had happened and she looked over my paperwork, and she had me in to see her the next day. If it wasn’t for her seeing me in the hall crying, I don’t know what I would have done,”said Herriman.

A sophomore early childhood education major explained that she was extremely depressed and miserable.

“I didn’t want to be alive. I reached out to counseling services to see if I could make an appointment. They contacted me back after a few days, but I missed the call, so they left a voicemail asking what times I’d be available,” the sophomore said. “I called back and left a voicemail and then never heard from them again. I even emailed them asking for meeting times; I was miserable and made it clear to them I needed help, and they left me hanging.”

The sophomore says she still made it through due to her support system and family, but she says she would be scared if a similar situation happened to someone else.

“They need to realize, especially in lieu of all that is happening in America, that mental health is a severe problem; its an actual thing we need to look at instead of kind of turning a blind eye, like ‘oh, they’ll figure it out’ we need to provide the services,” said a junior education student.

This could be part of the reason for declining enrollment too, the education student explained. If the university can’t provide the right services for a student, that person may take a semester off or even drop out.

“The new president is bringing a lot of fresh ideas,” she said.

“He was given a mess so he is going to have to make a mess in order to clean it up. But I think once he cleans it up we’re going to be looking at a good university because it’s clear he’s interested in the student population.”

President Pignatello said, “This concern came to my attention during the town meeting last month. It clearly underscores the value of our town meetings. Providing timely counseling services to our students in time of need and crisis is of utmost importance to me and should be to all of us.”

“We will continue to examine how to better ensure that we are providing the service, support and response that is required for our students. This is a vital responsibility and obligation,” he said.

New chancellor of the PASSHE system visits LHU, wants universities to to know themselves Cassandra Keller

The future is coming with the hope of big change as we welcome the new chancellor of Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

Daniel Greenstein, the fifth chancellor, spoke in an open forum about the future, Tuesday. He hopes to better serve the students, faculty and staff of Pennsylvania.

As a former director of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a non-profit organization that has been highly influential in education, Greenstein had worked in public education for many years. Now, being newly appointed chancellor back at the beginning of September, he hopes to bring big changes with his new position.

“I would like to get to a place by 2019-2020 where I can see evidence that our faculty and staff are finding that our universities are even greater places to work. That our universities, our system office are merging into places people feel they can grow professionally and find enjoyment, but more importantly that we are standing shoulder-to-shoulder.” He said.

As Greenstein sees it, the largest problem PASSHE faces is the lack of a single direction and identity. He explained the “uncivil discourse” between everyone has lead to this lack of identity. After which he introduced the idea of “transforming the culture” in which this “unacceptable” discourse has taken place.

“We can control how we behave toward one another,

we can transform our culture. With respect to our culture, we run this place. It is something we can and do control.”

He encouraged.

To combat this discourse, Greenstein promised to host informed discussions rather than opinion based ones as well as promising to be transparent with decisions and mistakes. More importantly, however, he promised to work for every student. He did realize that “Funnily enough, we can not legislate student success from the chancellor’s office.” He still pledged to “work tirelessly for all students, regardless of their zip code, age, or social status, because that is the right thing to do.”

With both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, we can expect great things from Greenstein.

Student to show art at Williamsport gallery

Staff Reports Danielle Sander, a Lock Haven University student, will present, “From Misfortune to Bliss,” at The Genetti Taphouse Gallery, 200 W. Fourth St., Williamsport with the artists of the Bald Eagle Art League from October 5-30 “I have been drawing since a young age, but after starting at Lock Haven University, I have been given opportunities to explore mediums I never once used.”said Sander. “I have always gravitated towards two-dimensional art, but now applying my artistic abilities into three-dimensional works, I have another outlet for personal expression.”

Sander says she tries to produce visually authentic images to explore distressing

issues. Many of the pieces acknowledge her own misfortunes.

“I do not feel shame in sharing troubling issues, but given this opportunity to express myself has brought healing and more understanding into my own darkness,”said Sander.

Sander explains she was heavily influenced by Vincent van Gogh and Frida Kahlo, who used art as a way to cope with the world.

“I am honored for this opportunity to exhibit at the Taphouse Gallery. This experience has given me insight into the process of putting together a personal show and I am truly blessed for all the help and encouragement to share my creations,”said Sander.

7 Shane Dawson’s new YouTube series!

Kiara Carson Arts & Entertainment Editor knc9459@lockhaven.edu Shane Dawson has been in the YouTube business for more than a decade now, and he just keeps getting better and better. The more content he puts out there, the more subscribers, views and likes he achieves. With over 17 million subscribers, Dawson always keeps his fans entertained and there’s never a dull moment in his videos.

He specializes in comedic skits, eating shows, giving reviews, conspiracy theories and making different, new series about the lives of different YouTubers. This new series has been the most popular out of all of his other videos and with good reason, too.

Dawson has interviewed multiple YouTubers like Trisha Paytas and Jeffree Star to live their lives and get a better understanding of how they make their money – basically stepping into their shows entirely. He’ll even dress up as them for the whole day: putting on make-up, getting his hair done/putting a wig on himself, wearing their clothes and shoes, and sometimes embodying their personalities to get the full effect. On a couple of occasions, he’ll look into the psyche of his subjects based on their behaviors and to try and see if anything interesting comes out.

In his newest series, Dawson does research on Jake Paul, another YouTube star, but one that has more issues with the public than most.

So much so that people think he’s a sociopath because of how he behaves towards people and what he shows during his videos. There have also been numerous accusations towards him pertaining to bullying, abuse, adultery, recklessness and so much more that can ruin his career,

if it’s not too far damaged already.

There are a lot of different sides to this story and Dawson plans to crackdown on each and every one of them in order to find the truth, even if it comes from the alleged sociopath himself. It seems as though trouble follows him everywhere, and it’s caught the attention of everyone!

This interests Dawson so much that he interviews multiple people who’ve personally dealt with Paul, reviews Paul’s old YouTube videos to see if Paul’s always acted the way he does now, digs up background on Paul’s family who also has influence on the internet and even talks to a professional psychologist to find out the traits of a sociopath.

This adventure is really intense, and it hasn’t even ended yet. The investigation is currently ongoing until this Friday, October 5, when the finale will be released, and all questions will be answered. It’s a five-part series with episodes that are almost 40 minutes long each and can all be found at Shane Dawson’s YouTube channel.

Sometimes we become so blinded by our environment that we get used to what’s comfortable to us; we don’t see outside of what we are used to. However, that mind set isn’t for everyone. Some people can’t wait to get outside of their comfort zone and daily norm. It all just depends on the person.

The fact of the matter is that there are so many other cultures to explore, understand and broaden our horizons with. We don’t necessarily have to go outside of the United States to become educated on different cultures and ways of life. Sometimes it’s as simple as going to the other side of town.

Everywhere you go there are people from different backgrounds, ethnicity and different upbringings. The world is so much bigger than the community and even the household that we grow up in.

What’s normal to one person may not be normal to the next; likewise what’s acceptable to one may not be acceptable to the next. That even goes for those within the same cultural background. From person to person, they will all have different backgrounds and ways of doing things. When we step outside of our

box, our community or our home we are able to better understand the different backgrounds and cultures that coexist there. This can then give us a different outlook and understanding on life and society as a whole. Each person brings a different puzzle piece to the table; every single person is molded and shaped in different ways.

Some people will travel to different countries to get a taste of a different life, whereas some will choose to stay in the states in order to achieve the same thing. They can find ways of doing different things from suburb to suburb, urban area to urban area and household to household.

Forbes’ travel bucket list for 2018 is Tanzania, Antarctica, Northern Lights in Iceland, Sweden, Canada and or Norway, Machu Picchu in Peru, Ecuador’s Islands, Paris, Polynesia, Fiji, Rwanda and Greece. These are all outside of the states but when one travels outside of their community they’re exposed to a different culture, background and overall environment.

It can be fascinating to know and understand that there is so much more out there to explore and learn about. In understanding and grasping this concept we then have a better understanding of one another. Forbes’ list may state all areas outside of the United States, but one can explore inside of the states and get some of the same effects, cultural shock and cultural education.

When the world comes together with understanding of various different backgrounds, there is a better level of understanding and more positive connections pertaining to the greater good of society.

The destiny of lions: Fighting for freedom Mark Matthews

Copyeditor mjm2923@lockhaven.edu On September 26, a special guest named Manana Levashov-Tumanishvili visited Lock Haven University to express her voice towards students.

The speech took place in East Campus room 334. She is currently a college student in Georgia studying Political Science.

Levashov-Tumanishvili was present in the United States because she was representing her country in the English Speaking Union International Public Speaking.

Her speech itself covered and taught a lot of life lessons. The main topic of discussion of the speech was, “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” She additionally states, “I want to invite you to the long journey of invent, to the long journeys of victories and failures.”

During one point of her presentation, she asked the audience to close their eyes. She said, “Imagine our created nature. What is it like? It is free, therefore it is tolerant. It is free, therefore it is your right. It is free, therefore it is a creator.” Going on, she points out, “These frees create the future.”

Moving forward, she asks to the crowd, “How can this small country (Georgia) manage to create a better future?” She answers, “Because our ability to fight. Fight for freedom, invent the future. We fight for freedom, because it’s freedom that creates the future.”

Proceeding on, she advances the conversation by saying, “However, fighting for freedom is not easy. It takes enormous courage, strength, and resilience.” She indicated the ideas she once received from her Georgian co-ed who said, “Freedom doesn’t come by itself. It is the destiny of lions.” Levashov-Tumanishvili explains the meaning of this by stating, “It is the sacrifices that set examples for generations. He (her co-ed) was tortured to death, but not defeated. Not defeated, because he’s still a lion in my heart. In my friend’s heart, his example awakens our innerstrength to fight for freedom.”

She explains why she chose to study Political Science. “I chose to devote myself to work for my country. I chose to predict it’s future.

Future that is completely free. Future that we are going to invent. I personally am starting to invent it now.”

Freedom of Speech was also a point mentioned by Levashov-Tumanishvili in her speech.

She quoted Benjamin Franklin, “Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech.”

Welcome to fall, enjoy the season

The days are getting shorter. The squirrels are getting ready for winter and you can practically smell the pumpkin spice in the air.

Fall is finally upon us. A couple weeks in and it is just now starting to look like fall.

Now some of you might be thinking, a couple weeks? Does that mean there is like an exact day the seasons change? Yeah there is an exact day and even an exact time! The days when the season is called either an equinox (spring and fall) or a solstice (summer and winter). This year the fall equinox fell on Sept. 22 at exactly 9:54 p.m.

An equinox is when the earth’s poles are the exact same dis-

tance from the sun. The only difference between the fall and spring equinoxes is the solstice that follows it. Solstices, however, are dependant on which pole is closest to the sun. For example, in roughly two months, the south pole will be closest to the sun. For people north of the equator, that upcoming solstice will be a winter solstice. For people south of the equator, that upcoming solstice will be the opposite, a summer solstice.

Just like any other season, fall is full of different holidays and events around campus. Many events on campus are arranged through the Haven Activities Council. Events like the fall welcome table, hosted along Ivy Lane on Wednesday, oftentimes have a photo booth to take cute, fun pictures. They also provide plenty of free snacks and drinks. We can also look forward to other seasonthemed events like the Haunted Studio hosted by the University Players later in the season.

Fun times are ahead as the fall season comes into full swing.

As the days get shorter and get colder, remember to bundle up and let’s all welcome fall. Enjoy the season!

OPINION #WhyIDidntReport: The hashtag supporting Ford Alexis Gallagher

Opinons Editor aag9585@lockhaven.edu Victims across the nation are showing support to Christine Blasey Ford, the first accuser in the Kavanaugh case, by sharing online, why they never immediately came forward with their sexual assaults.

The hashtag #WhyIDidntReport has turned into an outlet for victims, becoming a second act to the #MeToo movement. By Friday night after the trial, everyone turned to Twitter. It was full of celebrities, journalists, activists and common everyday people who explained why they didn’t come forward immediately.

“I was 17. Raped by a friend. I was confused. In denial. Afraid. His parents were richer & better connected than my parents,” Abigail Hauslohner, a reporter for the Washington Post, wrote on Twitter.

“He was a ‘good’ student. Ppl liked him.

The only friend I told--responded w: ‘He wld never do that.’ I didn’t think anyone would help me. #WhyIDidntReport” “#WhyIDidntReport. The first time it happened, I was 7. I told the first adults I came upon,” actress Ashley Judd posted on Twitter. “They said ‘Oh, he’s a nice old man, that’s not what he meant.’ So when I was raped at 15, I only told my diary. When an adult read it, she accused me of having sex with an adult man.” Others who posted the hashtag said they still couldn’t share their story. “It’s been 40 years and still feel too much shame to speak it publicly. #whyididntreport,” Twitter user Edith Pilaf wrote.

The hashtag is now breaking away from social media and taking to the streets of New York.

Ha Jung Song, 25, and Bowook Yoon, 26, were instructed to create something they cared about deeply for an advertising portfolio class. The project allows people to share stories of sexual assault on sheets of white paper. “We saw Donald Trump’s tweet blaming sexual assault victims and other people are retweeting that and made the #WhyIDidntReport,” Yoon said. “They’re sharing their experience and we thought we could make a simpler template where people could speak up about this problem.”

More than 1,000 fliers have been posted around New York’s busiest, most high-profile subway stations, including Times Square, Her-

ald Square and Union Square Park. This is asking New Yorkers to share the reasons why they did not report their sexual assaults. At the Union Square station, one person wrote: “He was popular, plus well loved, so I didn’t think anyone would believe me.” Marta Grinkowsky of Brooklyn said, “No one should ever have to hide and feel like no one else understands.”

Beyond the old-school pen and paper format, they created an Instagram account -- @whyididntreportit -- and have received hundreds of reactions, including personal notes, photos and words of support. They are hoping to spread this movement throughout the country. This page is for people to speak freely about their incidents and make others aware, anonymous or not.

Pictures on their Instagram account, which has more than 1,000 followers, included a note from a woman who says she was a sexual assault survivor in Georgia. “He was an ex and I was drunk. I knew no one would believe me. I could barely walk to my car, so I called the one person I thought I could trust. I was betrayed in the worst possible way,” Tiffany Howerton, 26, shared with their Instagram page @whyididntreportit. “I used my notepad on my phone, I took a screenshot, and posted it as a picture on my Instagram, the page reached out to me and thanked me for sharing my story.”

ers and taking their project to other parts of Manhattan, including the Lincoln Center. “It’s not your fault. You are so brave,” reads one of the posters. “The posters are for anyone who wants to engage,” they said. “We didn’t expect people would react this much. We just wanted to let people know about this movement.”

With these cases of sexual assult on the rise, Jackson Katz, a social researcher, asked both men and women what they do on a daily basis to avoid being sexually assulted.

“I ask just the men: What steps do you guys take, on a daily basis, to prevent yourselves from being sexually assaulted? At first there is a kind of awkward silence as the men try to figure out if they’ve been asked a trick question. The silence gives way to a smattering of nervous laughter. Occasionally, a young guy will raise his hand and say, ‘I stay out of prison.’ This is typically followed by another moment of laughter, before someone finally raises his hand and soberly states, ‘Nothing. I don’t think about it.’

Then I ask the women the same question. As the men sit in stunned silence, the women recount safety precautions they take as part of their daily routine.

‘Hold my keys as a potential weapon.

Look in the back seat of the car before getting in. Carry a cell phone. Don’t go jogging at night. Be careful not to drink too much. Don’t put my drink down and come back to it; make sure I see it being poured. Own a big dog. Carry Mace or pepper spray. Have an unlisted phone number. Have a man’s voice on my answering machine. Park in well-lit areas.

Don’t use parking garages. Don’t get on elevators with only one man, or with a group of men. Vary my route home from work. Watch what I wear. Don’t use highway rest areas. Use a home alarm system. Don’t wear headphones when jogging. Avoid forests or wooded areas, even in the daytime. Don’t take a first-floor apartment. Go out in groups. Own a firearm. Meet men on first dates in public places. Make sure to have a car or cab fare. Don’t make eye contact with men on the street. Make assertive eye contact with men on the street.’”

As a woman, there are so many things on this list that are done almost automatically.

Women are taught to always be alert about men.

This is not a “meme” - it’s the result of someone’s research, which makes it the most terrifying. The hate crime continues to grow against women, and it needs to be recognized.

OPINION 13 Let’s bring urban transportation back to the Haven Derek Dannker

As a senior, we often think we’ve seen everything, but I can tell you I’ve never seen a skateboarder on campus. This isn’t incidental or evidence of a passing fad but systematic.

Under President Fiorentino, Lock Haven University’s policy of prohibiting skateboards was strictly enforced. I’ve spoken to several students who claim to have seen him running down students on skateboards to reprimand them personally.

I don’t skateboard and I’d likely break something if I tried, but students should be able to use them if they wish. It is a way to stay healthy and a portable way of travel, but I think there’s something deeper to it.

Jordan Peterson, a clinical psychologist and author of “12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos,” created a list that addresses certain recommendations for everyday life. Rule 11 states, “Do not bother skateboarding children”. Peterson uses the anecdote of skateboarding children as an analogy for life.

“I like watching skateboarders do those crazy things because they’re trying to become competent and they’re facing danger,” said Peterson on the Rubin Report. “The kids are often shooed away, it’s like, wait a second, they’re practicing being courageous. They’re practicing mastering something in the face of danger.”

Peterson goes on the explain that the two fundamental cognitive substructures of the world are chaos and order. Chaos is when nothing you do produces the effect you want, and order is when your plans elicits the expected results from the world.

The best place to be is in the middle of the two. There, you are not overwhelmed but can introduce enough irregularities to be optimally exposed to new ideas or experiences.

When someone is skateboarding, they are -quite literally- teetering on the edge of disaster. They could fall at any second but their competence keeps them on the board but if they’re doing it right, they will fall. If they’re doing it better still, they’ll get back up.

This world is bound for disaster; many things won’t work out for you, you will die and everyone you know will eventually die. Life is hard. In light of this miserable fact, people- and especially students- should prepare themselves for life by working hard to expose themselves to things that will toughen them up to face the world courageously.

This university is a place for lessons but it isn’t always clear where the lessons are to be found. Some students find them on 4-wheels and a board.

Skateboarding should be allowed on campus.

Tobias led the Bald Eagles into the lone star state to clash with the current #9 team in the nation and finished the game by completing 22 of 42 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown, a five yarder to running back Chantz Swartz.

Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Junior midfielder Marah Foltz provided both goals for Lock Haven in a 2-1 double overtime win over Gannon. With just 8 minutes to go in regulation, Foltz beat her defender to the middle and slotted the ball past the keeper to tie the game 1-1.

In the 103rd minute, she picked up a ball on the left side on a breakaway, cut towards the goal and calmly tucked a shot past the keeper to the far post. Foltz’s game winner sealed Lock Haven’s first win over Gannon since September 9, 2003.

Sports Information Director dspato@lockhaven.edu BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team (7-9, 2-5 PSAC) was able to knock off Bloomsburg University (4-12, 0-7 PSAC) 3-1 (25-13, 25-22, 18-25, 25-17) in both teams’ Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division opener Tuesday in Bloomsburg.

The win gives the Bald Eagles their second straight PSAC win and moves them to 7-9 on the season.

The LHU offense was led by Chloe Williams (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) as she recorded 14 kills and a .407 hitting percentage in the match. She also added two digs and two total blocks.

Veronica Morrison (Wyalusing, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) registered a double-double for LHU, tallying 10 kills and 11 digs while Breanna McDonald (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) had 10 kills.

Defensively, Shaye Whiteman (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) once again led the way for the Haven, tallying 29 digs on the night. Gabrielle Stick (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) added 14 digs while Kristen Nealon (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood) added 13.

Nealon also added 35 assists to complete her own doubledouble.

Sarah Gomish and Grace Giza led Bloomsburg, recording 11 kills each.

UP NEXT: The Bald Eagles will return home to Thomas Fieldhouse for their next game when they host East Stroudsburg on Friday, October 5. That game is set for a 7:00 pm first serve.

Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspato@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./Kennard-Dale), Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) and Thomas Haines (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) of the Lock Haven University wrestling team will all enter the 2018-19 season ranked by FloWrestling.

Marsteller headlines the trio as he is ranked No. 3 to start to start the season, behind only No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph (Penn State) and No. 2 Evan Wick (Wisconsin) at 165 pounds. Last season, Marsteller earned All-American honors after placing fourth at the 2018 NCAA Division I National Championships in Cleveland. Marsteller went 44-4 last season and his 44 wins marked a single-season school record.

Hazel is ranked No. 16 at 184 pounds and Haines is listed at No. 9 at 285 pounds. Last season, Hazel made his NCAA tournament debut and Haines is a two-time NCAA qualifier. Hazel was 24-10 last season and Haines went 20-7 as the anchor in the Bald Eagles lineup.

At 157 pounds, returning national qualifier Alex Klucker (Summerdale, Pa./East Pennsboro) was listed by Flo as one to ‘keep an eye on’ this season. He was 25-11 last season.

In all, Lock Haven returns six former national qualifiers for the 201819 season. Also returning is two-time NCAA tournament qualifier Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) and 2017 NCAA qualifier DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren).

Fehlman and Shoop give the Bald Eagles a dominant 1-2 punch in the top-half of the lineup as they hold down the spots at 133 and 141, respectively.

LHU Swimming: Three things you need to know Adam Kaylor

Graduate Assistant ank4635@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN Pa. – The Lock Haven University swimming team is set to open the 2018-19 season on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. at the Relay Carnival hosted by Millersville University. Before the season begins, here are three things you need to know.

1. In his first season as head coach, Phil Hurley was able to help the Bald Eagles send seven swimmers to the PSAC Championships, including five who qualified for individual events. Hurley will look to build on last year’s success as he returns all but one of his swimmers from last season.

Lock Haven will look to vault forward off of an inspiring PSAC Championship performance in which every swimmer that dove into the pool set their personal best time. The relay teams were able to improve their bests by a jaw-dropping 20-30 seconds. Each individual swimmer also crushed personal records by around three to four seconds each.

2. The Bald Eagles return two PSAC finals qualifiers from last season. Kristin Allen (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Raechel Rodriguez (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) were able to qualify for the PSAC finals in multiple events for LHU. Allen qualified for the finals in the 100-yard Backstroke, 200-yard Butterfly and 200-yard Backstroke.

Rodriguez was able to qualify for the finals in the 100-yard Breaststroke as well as the 200-yard Breaststroke.

3. The Bald Eagles welcome three freshmen in for the 2018 season.

Loana Herrera-Tapia fly/free (Elmont, NY./Sewanhaka), Rebecca Nothstein fly/free (Northampton, Pa./Northampton), Veronica Pearson free (New Cumberland. Pa./Cedar Cliff).

Coach Hurley was optimistic in describing the upcoming season, “I am very excited about the upcoming season! All of the women are working very hard six days per week in the weight room and the pool. We are expecting excellent individual performances from all of our athletes!”

Women’s Cross Country regionally ranked Doug Spatafore

Sports Information Director dspato@lockhaven.edu NEW ORLEANS – The Lock Haven University women’s cross country team has moved up one spot to No. 9 in this week’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Atlantic Region rankings.

Last week, Lock Haven was ranked No. 10 and despite being idle over the weekend, the Bald Eagles jumped up to No. 9 this week in the rankings.

The Haven last raced on September 22, when the Bald Eagles hosted the LHU Invite. Lock Haven was led by Laurel Moyer, who was ninth overall after covering the 6,000-meter course in 22:06.0. Moyer and the Bald Eagles finished ninth in the team standings. Cadie Kiser was 42nd out of 211 women-runners in the field, and ran a 6K time of 23:21.1.

The Bald Eagles will return to the course this Saturday, October 6 at the Highlander XC Challenge hosted by the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey. The race is set for an 11 a.m. start.
