Play for Brian 2018

Many traditions come along with the Fall season in Central Pennsylvania. Football, Apple Cider, and students gearing up for the start of the new academic year. All of these are signs that Fall is approaching, but there is another tradition that the students at Lock Haven University help to organize that means a little more.

This year will be the 11th year for the annual Play for Brian tournament held on Friday, November 16th in the Student Rec Center at Lock Haven University. Play for Brian began in the Fall of 2008 as a fundraiser for the Brian Keefer’s Medical Fund. Brian was a Lock Haven University studentathlete majoring in Health and Physical Education and was also a member of the men’s track and field team. On July 1st, 2008, Brian suffered a life altering gymnastic accident after attempting to perform a triple flip. Upon landing, his head struck the bottom of the foam pit used for landing and caused his C-4 vertebra to slip over the C-5 vertebra leaving him a quadriplegic.

Through rehabilitation and therapy, Brian remains hopeful that improvement will continue and he is seeing progress by now being able to operate a joystick powering his wheelchair.

Each year, students in the Sport Administration Major spend their fall semester planning and preparing to put on this wonderful event. They work with the Student Rec Center, Facilities, the Student Auxiliary Services, and the local community to help make this event run as smooth as possible and do the most they can to benefit Brain. This year’s Play for Brian will not only be helping Brian himself, but the proceeds are to be split 50/50 to help Jersey Shore High School football player Caleb Leone.

Caleb Leone is a football player from Jersey Shore, Pa that took a hit to the head at practice that has left him with a

severe brain injury and in a coma. He was taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and has since been transferred to Hershey Medical Center. He is breathing on his own. Half of the funds raised by this year’s Play for Brian will be going to Caleb’s family to help with medical cost.

Many Sport Administration students will be working hard to assure this event continues to be as successful as the ones before it and help carry on this great tradition here at Lock Haven University. President walks with pets at Yappy Hour

On Tuesday night, President Pignatello and his dog, Ralphie welcomed students, as well as community members and their dogs to walk from the Riverwalk Overview Beach Pavillion down to the Durrwachter center. More than a dozen people showed up for the chance to stretch their legs while meeting and chatting with the new president, and fellow dog owners. Dr. Pignatello said it was an event he knew he wanted to do when he became president, “I’ve gone to events before where people and dogs have come together and I knew it would be great for the students and community members.� The event concluded with custom made LHU treats for the dogs, as well as cookies and drinks for the people. Another Yappy Hour will be held next month.

Global Honors Society holds p a n e l o n t e c h n o l o g y a n d wa r Ben Ronemus

Staff Writer bjr1324@lockhaven.edu The “Technology and War” Panel discussion highlighted how science and war coevolved with each other, noting the major impacts of the technological shifts in World War I as well as the human impact of war in general.

The Panel discussion was hosted by Lock Haven University Global Honors, with many Global Honors students in attendance.

The three panelists were Sandra Barney, Professor of History, John Reid, Professor of Physics, and student Ping Yuan. Barney and Reid highlighted the symbiotic relationship of science and warfare while Yuan showed the audience the human impacts of war.

A special emphasis was placed on the First World War, due to the centennial of its end. According to Barney, World War I was “the first war in which both sides were equally prepared.”

Barney also covered the shift in technology away from using horses and other animals to mechanized vehicles in warfare.

Speaking on updates in technology, Reid said that the military uses science “to solve a problem, whether it be offense or defense.” In World War I, the offensive problem seemed to have been solved by the shift from using horses to tanks. Barney said, “two months after the last cavalry charge is the first suc- Ping Yuan, student representative cessful deployment of tanks.”

The humans behind the technology and those affected by it were also highlighted during the panel. Reid mentioned Alfred Nobel and his invention of dynamite to improve the safety of mine workers who blasted open new mines. Reid said, “he wanted to save lives” and that he was “very saddened by the military uses for it.”

Barney spoke on the bond humans had with war animals in the First World War, especially that of dogs who were in the trenches alongside soldiers. After showing the audience a few pictures of these war dogs, Barney said the “idea of having to put a gas mask on a dog is just so sad.”

The last speaker, Yuan, demonstrated a personal prospective on war. Yuan spoke on the Chinese Civil War of the 1940’s, mentioning the roles members of her families played in it. Yuan said, “the war was between the nationalists…and the communists.”

Speaking of her maternal family, Yuan said, “my great grandfather was nationalist army.” She went on to say that on her father’s side, her grandfather “was communist army” mentioning that “his family was poor” opposed to the wealthier members of her mother’s side.

The panel ended by fielding further questions from faculty and students about their presentations.

Newest art exhibit in Sloan!

Kiara Carson A&E Editor knc9459@lockhaven.edu On September 24, 2018, Sloan auditorium and its patrons introduced their newest featured artist, Benjamin Lowery. With about ten new paintings hanging in the hallways of Sloan, Lowery made a great display of unexpected artwork. After viewing his paintings, he gave a presentation explaining each and every painting, giving the audience an idea of what was going through his head when he created them and showed how everything was where it needed to be in the image.

Each of his paintings were a representation of how you can make different things fit into a picture without having to obstruct your subject. Lowery’s main inspiration for this idea was Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, a French painter who was most famous for his still life paintings back in the 18th century. During the presentation, Lowery showed an example of one of Chardin’s still life paintings and compared it with one of his older paintings.

They were both still life paintings, but Lowery knew that there was something off about his and had to take a second look at Chardin’s piece.

He described Chardin’s painting in his view point about what he saw that made everything in the painting better than his. He says “there was this sensation to me… that everything is exactly where it needs to be. That you can’t move anything in the painting without something else falling apart or changing.”

So, when working on his paintings, Lowery decided to use that concept and apply it to humans and their limbs. In his artwork, you can see that with every interaction the people in the image are making, nothing is out of place and the body parts are symmetrically balanced with respect to how they interact with the other objects involved.

It works out well for Lowery because his work is perceived as ordinary and simple at first glance, but once you understand the background on each one individually it turns out to be a fun experience. This is intentional as he even says “I enjoy making funny or stupid paintings that make me laugh”, so you can get a sense that he’s being true to his vision. 7 “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” movie and book review Theresa Dempsey Guest Writer tmd7504@lockhaven.edu The premise for the novel and movie “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” is the story behind the HeLa cells—the most replicated and useful cells in history. The HeLa cells are continuously reproducing; thus, the cells are immortal. These cells are used to test vaccines for polio, the flu, HPV and many more viruses. They have also been used for cloning, invitro fertilization, gene mapping and to test chemotherapy. Needless to say, these cells have had a hugely positive impact on modern science.

However, the original HeLa cells were NOT obtained in an ethical manner, and the ethical violations of Johns Hopkins Medicine are still creating repercussions to this day. “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” gives insight to the woman behind the HeLa cells and how the actions of the scientific community affected her husband and children.

While the book focuses on the scientific aspect of Henrietta Lacks’ life, the movie “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” explores the emotions involved with a lack of medical knowledge, a lack of consent, and a life without a mother. The movie truly focuses on the family aspect of the Lacks family’s story, showing how the injustice of the HeLa cell experiments affects them in their everyday lives—they have no control over their mother’s cells and have been continuously taken advantage of by lawyers, journalists and doctors. The Lacks family has also never been compensated for the sales of their mother’s cells, despite Johns Hopkins making a large profit. The root of this injustice is the lack of health and scientific literacy. The Lacks family, including Henrietta, was unaware of what was happening to them through numerous procedures. Their lack of awareness was not their fault.

Part of a health professional’s job is providing information in an understandable manner to his or her patients so that the patient can have autonomy, or the ability to make an informed decision. The Lacks family was never informed about any of the procedures they underwent and were unable to give informed consent. The medical treatment that they and many others received was unethical and unjust.

The movie portrays the emotional trauma of a lack of autonomy very well. However, it skims over the scientific aspects of Henrietta Lacks’ life and loses several important scenes regarding race and humanity from the book.

The screening event organized by Dr. Van Dyke was a success, and the professors involved would like to thank everyone who came to the screening and participated in the discussion at the end. The discussion was kicked off by Dr. Bandura with a very informative and beneficial presentation about HeLa cells, what they are, and how they have been used to benefit the public. For example: HeLa cells aided the discovery of HPV-18, a strand of HPV that has been proven to cause cervical cancer (the disease that Henrietta Lacks died from). After this presentation, Dr. Kathleen Allison opened a discussion about the movie, asking the combined audience of professors and students what they found interesting. Student Madelin Lee felt that “reading the book did not give off the emotions that the movie did.”

Others found the impact of a lack of health literacy and autonomy important. Dr. Allison closed the discussion with a reminder that all health professionals are responsible for remembering that they work with human beings, not just diseases or other ailments. Dr. Van Dyke is pleased with the turnout from the students and excited about what topics the book and movie bring to the forefront of ethical discussions.

It’s intriguing to do various DIY things such as makeup, hair, creating distressed jeans and many other things. There is an innumerable amount of interesting things that you can learn how to make on your own, and you can even save money in doing so.

Marie Claire advertises DIY face masks on their website that contain various different ingredients.

One of them being Cocoa Dream Hydration Mask. This face mask is a mix used to maintain oily skin.

For many college students, this is an interesting, cool, relaxing and fun way to take a break from your studies and do something different to enjoy and pamper yourself.

How to make the Coca Dream Hydration Mask 1. Mash one quarter of an avocado in a small bowl.

2. Stir in one tablespoon cocoa powder and one tablespoon honey, mashing and mixing well.

3. Apply the mask to your clean, dry skin for 10 minutes.

4. Wash off with warm water, then moisturize as per usual.

It is said that avocado is used to hydrate your skin, cocoa is an antioxidant and honey stands as an antibacterial anti-inflammatory agent.

There is even a “Nourishing Honey Mask” 1. Brew one cup of chamomile tea with two tea bags and let cool completely.

2. In a tiny bowl, stir together one tablespoon of Manuka or raw honey, and one teaspoon of nutritional yeast.

3. Add just enough chamomile tea to the bowl to create a thicker paste that’s still runny enough to spread across your skin, but not too watery.

4. Apply a thin layer to your face and let sit for 20 minutes.

5. Rinse off and pat dry. Moisturize afterward!

Marie Claire says that nutritional yeast treats acne and helps to soothe your skin.

Along with the others, there is also a Breakfast Mask 1. Combine one egg yolk, one tablespoon of honey, and one tablespoon of olive oil (yes, olive oil) with half a cup of oatmeal.

2. Stir well, then apply it to your face for 15-20 minutes.

3. Rinse with lukewarm water (make sure your drain is cool with oatmeal!) and then moisturize.

Tips for being a couch potato

News Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu We are all a lazy potato every now and then. Here are a few hacks to make your potato life a bit easier!

We all need that coffee in the morning, but coffee pots aren’t allowed in the dorm halls. Here’s what you can do! Take a foam cup and cut out the bottom. Now take your coffee filter and rubber band it to the bottom; be sure to leave a dip in the coffee filter for your coffee grounds.

The next part is tricky, so be extra careful. Place the top of the foam cup over a mug and, with the coffee grounds in the filter, slowly pour your boiling water into the mug. After that, enjoy your steaming hot cup of joe.

This next hack is for when you invite your potato friends over to help you finish up those week old leftovers before they go bad, but your microwave is way too small too heat them all up quickly. Here’s what you do! Take a mug or some other kind of cup and place it upside down in the microwave. Then put your leftovers around the cup and on top of the cup. Be sure the leftovers on the cup won’t hit any sides in the

microwave if there is a turntable. After that, heat it up and enjoy the company!

The next hack for today is one that is helpful when you have a sweet tooth for something cold. All you need for this hack is a pack of yogurt, scissors and a few popsicle sticks. Take the pack of yogurt and, with the scissors, make a small slit in the top of the yogurt. Once you have the slit, stick the popsicle stick in and pop them in the freezer. Spoons with the handle down will also work in place of popsicle sticks. After a few hours, you can enjoy the frozen yogurt treats you just made!

This next hack is for when you have a bag of chips open, but don’t have a clip to close them. Instead of just rolling up the bag and hoping they don’t get stale, you can close them up with a pen by folding the bag opening and sliding the pen’s clip of the edge. You can even use multiple pens to secure the bag closed. Now you can have chips without them going stale the next time you order pizza!

Speaking of pizza, this next hack will help you out when you are heating up leftover pizza. No one likes a hard crust, so when you go to heat up your pizza, put a small cup of water in the microwave with your pizza. Once the pizza is heated, you can enjoy your soft crust.

Sports Editor mxs3279@lockhaven.edu Unfortunately, stress is inevitable both in everyday life and even more so in the life of college students. There are many ways to tame stress and keep it down to a minimum.

According to Everyday Health the tricks are to eat well, exercise, avoid unnatural energy boosters, use emotional support, never give up, try not to overload yourself, breathe and utilize massages.

Some other tips that don’t necessarily revolve around your mental, physical or emotional health have to do with organization. Sign Up Genius gives tips on how to minimize your stress.

They suggest that one should keep a detailed calendar, prioritize, schedule backwards (meaning most important first then the rest after), start a routine and know your sleep requirements. It is also important to know your physical stress indicators.

It is known that some foods are obviously healthier for you than others, but according to Health.com consuming specific foods can help you to balance stress. Health.com states that green leafy vegetables, turkey breast, oatmeal, yogurt, salmon, blueberries, pistachios, dark chocolate, milk, seeds and cashews belong to the list of de-stressers.

Positivity is a strategy apart from the physical health kick that helps maintain stress. It is known that negative thoughts will manifest themselves. The more positive someone is the more likely positive thoughts will help to minimize the negative thoughts. The good tends to always outweigh the bad.

Although everything may seem to be going wrong and the figure of stress may be making itself present, there is always a way to overcome. Sometimes in order to find the light you have to dig for it because it is buried underneath the darkness.

ANTI-ABORTION MOVEMENT OR ANTI-FEMINISM? Alexis Gallagher

Opinons Editor aag9585@gmail.com It’s safe to say, the argument among abortion rights activists is that the anti-abortion movement is just applied misogyny — a hatred, contempt toward or fear of women’s sexuality and autonomy. This topic rose again in public news because of the recent sexual assault allegations against Brett Kavanaugh.

Although the anti-abortion and anti-feminist alliance existed long before these allegations, they are now sweeping the nation. Currently three women have publicly come forward to accuse Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, of alleged past incidents of sexual misconduct. These incidents happened over 35 years ago, and in both incidents Kavanaugh was young and intoxicated at house parties.

Psychology researcher and Palo Alto University professor, Christine Blasey Ford, 51, alleges that Kavanaugh and his Georgetown Preparatory classmate, Mark Judge, locked her in a bedroom at a party in 1982. Kavanaugh then held her down, attempted to silence her with his hand, and tried to remove her clothes. Ford told her attorney, Debra Katz, that this was attempted rape.

Deborah Ramirez, a Yale University classmate of Kavanaugh’s, claims that he exposed himself to her and shoved his penis in her face at a dorm room party in their freshman year at the Ivy League school. She said that they were playing a drinking game at the time and admits there are gaps in her memory of that night.

Julie Swetnick alleged that in 198182 she became aware of efforts by Mr. Kavanaugh and high-school friend, Mark Judge, to “‘spike’ the ‘punch’” at house parties she attended with drugs “and/or grain alcohol” and subsequently “target” women.

She witnessed efforts by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and others in the early 1980s to spike drinks and “cause girls to become inebriated” so they could be assaulted. She also alleged that she was a victim of a gang rape at a party at which Mr. Kavanaugh was present.

Swetnick said she attended more than 10 house parties in the Washington area between 1981 and 1983 with Judge Kavanaugh and Mr. Judge, where she watched them “drink excessively and engage in highly inappropriate conduct, including being overly aggressive with girls” and grabbing them “without their consent.”

The Republican party is trying to defend House and Senate majorities in the election for Kavanaugh, widely seen as a referendum on Trump. The president has himself been accused of sexual misconduct by

more than a dozen women, allegations which he has denied. Trump has been taking attack on Twitter in regards to the situation.

“If the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. The radical left lawyers want the FBI to get involved NOW. Why didn’t someone call the FBI 36 years ago?”

The #MeToo movement, a movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault, is sweeping social media yet again. This week, the Kavanaugh matter is a symbol of a social and cultural issue that roiled the country.

The allegation against Kavanaugh regards itself as idealistic and pro-woman and is capable of supporting female advancement and empowerment. The #MeToo movement is encouring people to “believe women” no matter how long ago something occurred in their lives.

On Thursday, accused and the first accuser – Justice Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford – are expected to appear for televised interrogations before the 21 members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. If Ford opts not to testify, Judge Kavanaugh’s chances for confirmation in the Republican-led Senate could be boosted.

Women are protesting against Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court because it would be a major step toward the cause of recriminalizing abortion.

Even if this trial towards Kavanaugh wins, a pro-life cause joined to a party that can’t win female votes and seems to have no time for women will never be able to achieve those legislative goals. Having that long-awaited victory, accomplished by a male under a cloud of #MeToo suspicion, seems like a good way to cement a perception that’s fatal to the pro-life movement’s larger purposes — the perception that you can’t be pro-woman and pro-life.

Those who shed crocodile tears for the rare “unborn victims” of lateterm abortions while quietly working to ban the vast majority of abortions that occur during the first trimester of pregnancy, and even some “abortifacient” birth control methods, are lying about their actual views on reproductive rights. Republican politicians are trying to achieve their goal of turning back the clock on both abortion rights and women’s rights, no matter if one of them has allegations of sexual assult towards them or not.

Today, it is getting harder every day to disassociate pro-life from anti-woman views. It is certainly getting harder for me to believe that anti-abortion activists care more about saving embryos than about limiting women’s rights.

Possible ban on flavored e-cigarettes Alexis Gallagher

On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration published that they are now considering banning online e-cigarette sales.

E-cigarettes are not only making their way into the hands of adults, but are also sweeping their way into minor’s lives. The FDA is concerned about how underaged individuals are getting and smoking ecigarettes.

Weeks prior, the FDA has stated that this is an “epidemic” and announced a historical crackdown. Although e-cigarettes are less harmful to adults, the FDA cannot imagine making a new generation addicted to nicotine. The amount of vaping rises in popularity with teens; the number of high school students who have used e-cigarettes, has increased by 75 percent from previous data.

Earlier this month, The FDA ordered five nicotine vaping brands – juul, British American Tobacco’s Vuse, Altria’s MarkTen, Imperial Brands’ Blu E-cigs and Japan Tobacco’s Logic – to submit plans within 60 days detailing how they will prevent teens from using their product. If they are unable to keep teens from using their product, the FDA will pull the flavors of the e-cigarettes off the shelves.

Football Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Minney-Gratz, one of the elite return specialists in all of DII football, sparked the Bald Eagles to victory Saturday at East Stroudsburg, thanks to an 84-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second half. The Bald Eagles won after trailing 14-0 in the first quarter, 17-13 at halftime and 27-13 early in the third quarter. The MinneyGratz TD return came late in the third quarter as LHU rallied for 31 second-half points. Minney-Gratz’s punt return touchdown was the first for Lock Haven since the Bald Eagles recorded a punt return for a TD after a block, back in the 2016 win at East Stroudsburg.

Minney-Gratz also caught a TD pass in the fourth quarter and the wide receiver finished with two catches for 45 yards. He scored on a 24 yard catch-and-run pass-play. In all, Minney-Gratz racked up 2-1 all-purpose yards in the win (10 run, 45 rcv, 65 kr, 81 pr).

Field Hockey Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu In two non-conference wins last week, LHU outscored opponents 10-2, thanks in large part to Alyscia Smith (Newport, Pa./Newport), who had a hand in 7 of Lock Haven’s 10 goals. Over the two games – both wins – the senior-midfielder scored four goals and dished out three assists for 11 total points. In the 5-0 win over LIU Brooklyn, Smith scored three goals and dished out one assist. In a 5-2 win at Hofstra, she scored once and registered two assists.

15 SPORTS Strong first half powers Lock Haven past LIU Brooklyn The LHU field hockey team used a strong first half to power past LIU Brooklyn, 5-0 in nonconference action.

Sports Information Director dspato@lockhaven.edu BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (5-3) used a very strong first half to jump out to a 3-0 halftime lead in route to a dominating 5-0 win over LIU Brooklyn (1-8) Friday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Bald Eagles took control of the game from the very beginning, consistently pushing the pace and applying pressure to the Blackbird’s defense. LHU scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of the match to break it open early and never looked back.

Taryn Piano (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg) got the scoring started for LHU, knocking in a penalty corner in the 11th minute to push LHU ahead 1-0 early.

Four minutes later, Dana-Lee De Gannes (Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago/Maraval) collected a deflected shot from Emily Robb (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) and put the ball in the back of the net to stretch the Bald Eagle lead to 2-0.

Alyscia Smith (Newport, Pa./Newport) added LHU’s third goal of the first half in the 33rd minute when she ripped a shot into the net off of The Haven’s fifth penalty corner of the half.

In the second half, Smith added two penalty stroke goals late to push Lock Haven’s lead to 5-0 and secure the Haven victory.

With her three goals in today’s contest, Smith recorded her second hat trick in the past three games.

Robb and Tamia Roach (Petit Valley, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph’s Convent Port-of-Spain) each added two assists in the game for LHU while Smith also added an assist in her strong, all-around effort.

As a team, The Bald Eagles outshot the Blackbirds 21-7 with 18 of

LHU’s shots being on goal.

Brianna DeAngelis (Doylestown, Pa./Monmouth) made three saves in goal for the contest.

With the win today, Lock Haven head coach Pat Rudy continued to close in on win No. 600. Rudy now has 598 career wins in her hall of fame career.

Men’s XC hosts LHU Invite, finishes second Doug Spatafore

Sports Information Director dspato@lockhaven.edu After a 22-day layoff, the regionally-ranked Lock Haven University men’s cross country team returned to action today on their home course, as the Bald Eagles hosted the 2018 LHU Invite.

Behind a 12th-place finish from Matthew Oscovitch (Andover, N.J./Misericordia), Lock Haven finished in a tie for second with the talented Penn State Club Team. Both LHU and the PSU XC Club finished with 86 points, just three points behind team-champion York (Pa.).

Oscovitch covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:09.6.

Aaron Pfeil (Pittsburgh/South Fayette) was 14th with a time of 26:12.0.

The Bald Eagles’ benefitted from a strong front-running pack, and Luke Vanerhoff (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley), Anson Weidner (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) and John Davern (Manchester, N.J./Manchester) rounded out Lock Haven’s top-five. The tree joined Oscovitch and Pfeil in the top-25.

Vanderhoff was 19th (26:19.5), Weidner 20th (26:21.2) and Davern 21st (26:21.3).

LHU will travel to the Highlander Invitational on Saturday, October 6.

SPORTS LHU Football opens PSAC East play with win after dropping ESU in second-half It what proved to be a wild offensive shootout in the second half, the LHU football team soared higher, and dropped host East Stroudsburg, 44-41, in PSAC East action.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Cameron Tobias (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, Nysir Minney-Gratz (Easton, Pa./Easton) returned a punt 84 yards for a TD, and Javon Whitfield (Philadelphia/Simon Gratz) finished with a team-high 11 tackles and two interceptions, sparking the Lock Haven University football team past East Stroudsburg University (1-3, 0-1 PSAC East), 44-41.

The win – Lock Haven’s first of the 2018 season – came in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener for both LHU and host East Stroudsburg.

The game proved to be an offensive shootout which included a combined 55 points in the second half.

On the way to the win, the Bald Eagles (1-3, 1-0 PSAC East) overcame a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter, a 17-13 deficit at halftime, and Lock Haven trailed the Warriors 27-13 early in the third quarter.

In the end, the Bald Eagles soared just a bit higher in the second half, thanks in large part to Tobias and Minney-Gratz, who sparked the comeback.

Both of Tobias’ touchdownpasses came in the fourth quarter, including one to Minney-Gratz. With 3:09 left in the third quarter Minney Gratz returned a punt 84 yards which led to the Bald Eagles tying the game at 27-27.

Defensively, Whitfield was the leader for LHU as he finished with 11 tackles and two interceptions. Dontae Mason (Philadelphia/Bishop McDevitt) added 10 tackles and Fernando Flores (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) finished with nine stops. Shane Scott (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) recorded six tackles, as did Obadiah Asare (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby), who also had a sack, forced fumble and pass-breakup.

Austyn Carson (Blanchard, Pa./Central Mountain) kicked three field goals to help spark the Bald Eagles offense, connecting from 29, 20 and 20 yards.

Trailing 14-0, running back Ralph Hyland (Philadelphia/Frankford) put Lock Haven on the board with 1:10 left in the first quarter. Hyland’s 4-yard TD run capped a 14-play, 66-yard drive.

Two-Carson field goals in the second quarter kept Lock Haven in the game, as ESU held a 17-13 lead at halftime.

Chantz Swartz (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata H.S.) scored on a threeyard run to cap nearly an 80-yard drive with just 4:11 left in the third quarter. The TD-run helped spark the offensive flurry and Bald Eagle rally. Over the next five minutes, Lock Haven would score 28 points.

East Stroudsburg followed up Swartz’s TD-run with a quick threeplay, 56-second drive that led to a punt. That punt was returned by Minney-Gratz 84 yards for a TD with just 3:09 left in the third.

The electrifying punt-return tied the game at 27-27.

Tobias threw for a pair of touchdowns in the first minute of the fourth quarter. The first came with 14:57 left and the Bryan Greene (Milesburg, Pa./Bald Eagle) 7-yard TD catch gave LHU its first lead, and Minney-Gratz hauled in a 24-yard TD catch to extend the lead.

Carson’s third field goal of the day - a 20-yarder - with 2:56 left in the game proved to be huge, as it extended the LHU lead to 44-34.

ESU struck for seven late and with 1:43 left in the game, it was 44-41, but Lock Haven held on for the win after recovering the ensuing onside kick attempt.

Swartz rushed for 120 yards and one TD, while Hyland ran for 75 yards and one score. Greene caught seven passes for 83 yards and one touchdown.

The win marked Lock Haven’s second over ESU in the last three seasons. MinneyGratz’s punt return touchdown was the first for Lock Haven since the Bald Eagles recorded a punt return for a TD after a block, back in the 2016 win at East Stroudsburg.

UP NEXT: Next week (Week 5), the Bald Eagles will head to Texas to take on No. 1 Texas A&M Commence, the defending NCAA Division II national champions. The game – LHU’s second straight on the road – is set for a 7 p.m. EST kickoff. It will also mark the Bald Eagles second game in three weeks vs. an opponent ranked in the top-three nationally.
