NEWS Students invited to Pignatello’s first town hall meeting Mark Matthews

Copy Editor mjm2923@lockhaven.edu The Annual Town Hall Meeting took place on Tuesday in Sloan Auditorium. It was President Robert Pignatello’s first town hall meeting at Lock Haven University, as well as the first time that students were invited to the event.

The meeting’s primary goal for everyone in attendance (President, faculty, students, staff) was to continue the conversation of how members of Lock Haven University can invest in each other in making the University an even better place.

The meeting began with President Pignatello’s introduction to the audience, “I guess this is like a typical class, no one wants to sit at the front of the room. It’s so funny. You tell your students not to do it, but you’re doing it too,” joked Pignatello.

Pignatello mentioned that one of the first things he decided to do in changing the format of the meeting was to invite everyone, includingstudents & staff, to the meetings so everyone can be a part of the conversation. The addition of inviting the students to the meeting gave the meeting an engaged and open feeling. Increased community engagement, transparency, trust, communication, culture, and atmosphere were the goals listed by Pignatello towards each person at the University. Additionally, Pignatello remarked how excited he was for the arrival of the students. He mentioned how he enjoys sitting down with them and talking with them.

Pignatello also mentioned the series of receptions coming up for the harvest season. He pointed out that it’s a beautiful time of the year for such events. Pignatello stated, “I want to share the residence and have engagment activities. It’s a way to get together, away from the campus.” Pignatello also wants students to attend these receptions, as well as inviting teams and clubs to certain receptions.

In terms of internal communications, President Pignatello mentioned a new online publication will come out which is called “From the President’s Desk.” The first issue is scheduled to come out this week where he will be sharing the various things that have been going on

during the first few weeks of the semester and discussions with fellow workers. On the bottom of the publication, Pignatello said that there will be a little tidbit saying, “Did You Know?” which will showcase a historical fact that will excite and prepare everyone for the celebration of the 150th year of the University’s existence.

The events coming up that Pignatello revealed at the meeting were Yappy Hour (September 25), Bike Tour (October 13), Sponsored Dinner for Local Veterans (November 19), and President Pignatello’s inauguration (March 1).

The Yappy Hour will be a dog walk from the Pavilion to the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center. Pignatello thinks it will be a great event to link students, faculty, staff, and the outside community.

For the Bike Tour, the plan is to have it take place on the Pine Creek Rail Trail.

Elizabeth Smart comes to Lock Haven Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu “There isn’t anything in this world that people can do to you to take away your worth as a human being,”Elizabeth Smart, author and activist, to a full Price Auditorium with off-site streaming locations,Wednesday.

President Pignatello, who introduced Smart, Awarded her the president’s award for community service in her effort to bring greater awareness and understanding about sexual assault.

Smart gave her account of being taken from her home when she was 14 years old at knifepoint.

“I just felt like my world was turned upside down… There wasn’t anything that prepared me for this moment. They seemed to happen in other places,”said Smart.

She was taken into the mountains of Utah and led to a well hidden

camp by a strange man. Once she arrive, the man told that she was married to him and it was time to consummate the marriage.

“I felt spiritually and emotionally destroyed… I remember just wanting everything to be over,”said Smart.

During her education, Smart says, all her teachers taught a strict abstinence code.

Smart explained one of their metaphors: “You’re like this piece of gum and when you have sex you’re a chewed up piece of gum and no one wants a chewed up piece of gum.”

Smart says, the next 9 months were the hardest of her life as she moved from place to place with her captors. Eventually she convinced her captors to move back to Utah where she was recognized by policemen.

Today, Smart works to raise awareness and to stop sexual assault, and teaching others how to support survivors.

“For us, the most important thing we can do is listen and support them… We don’t need to revicumize them,”said Smart.

LHU hosts Academic Resources Fair Staff Reports The Center for Excellence and Inclusion coordinated the 2018 Academic Recources Fair.

Over 30 offices and agencies from downtown Lock Haven were brought to campus, Wednesday, along Ivy Lane to connect with students.

Consitution Day 2018: Professors provide legal clarity Ben Ronemus

Staff Writer bjr1324@lockhaven.edu Lock Haven University held a Constitution Day panel at 6 p.m. at the Greenberg Auditorium on Monday. The panel was introduced by Stanley Berard, Professor of Political Science. The panelists were Sharon Stringer, Professor of Communication, Dwayne Marshall, Professor of Criminal Justice, and Janet Irons, Professor of History. Each member of the panel talked on their area of expertise and how it was related to the constitution. The focus was on the rights afforded to Americans by the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments of the United States Constitution.

Stanley Berard kicked off the panel by introducing the panelists and the Constitution to the audience. He talked briefly about its creation and where it is today. “The Constitution is not fixed over time,” said Berard. He continued by saying the Constitution “takes on meaning from cases that are decided and set precedent for later”.

The first panelist to speak was Sharon Stringer on the First Amendment to the Constitution and how it relates to the media. She began by asking: “What freedom will you exercise?” Stringer then went on to compare exercising First Amendment rights to exercising the body for health, “What happens when you exercise six days a week and you miss a day?” asked Stringer, adding “your body doesn’t want to get back into the swing of things”.

Stringer then read the First Amendment word for word. She followed by saying, “Those are 48 words that have had a lot of contest in recent years.” Lastly, she spoke about Supreme Court cases that involved the First Amendment Rights of students and by telling a personal story about marching against a

Private School that did not allow African Americans to attend. She asked, “what is it that you will do to exercise that freedom?”

The next panelist was Dwayne Marshall, who spoke on the Fourth Amendment forbidding “unreasonable search and seizure”. Marshall said, “The Constitution is giving police officers a lot of leg weight”.

He continued, however, “if police officers exploit the fourth amendment, then anything they find is inadmissible in court.”

Marshall spoke on a person’s rights while being searched and on what a police officer can and cannot do during that encounter.

“You can give a police officer consent to search” said Marshall, “but the minute you say stop, they’re supposed to stop.” Marshall explained New York’s Stop and Frisk program. According to Marshall, Stop and Frisk is “supposed to be merely for weapons” and “if they have to feel it to determine what it is, it then becomes inadmissible.”

The final panelist was Janet Irons, who spoke on the Eighth Amendment forbidding “cruel and unusual punishment.” She first spoke on the death penalty, “one of the big controversies about cruel and unusual punishment is the death penalty” said Irons. She continued, “its fate has kind of

gone up and down in history. In 1972 the Supreme Court actually said that the death penalty was unconstitutional because of the way it was being implemented, that there were no standards, there was no procedure” said Irons. Since then, according to Irons, “the debate about cruel and unusual punishment has shifted from the death penalty to putting people away for life, and the term they use is life without parole.” She then talked about minors who were sentenced to life prison sentences. Irons said, “Most crimes are committed by people in their teens and their twenties.” She continued, “the percentage of people over 65 who are arrested is 0%.” She then questioned the need for minors to be given life without parole sentences. Irons asked if individuals who were arrested as minors and are “serving a sentence of life, and they’re 65 years old, do they really need to stay in jail?”

The panel finished with some closing words from Berard and handing out pocket copies of the U.S. Constitution.

Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel dominates this year’s Emmy’s Awards.

On Monday, the 70th annual Primetime Emmy Awards recognized the past year’s outstanding feats in television. The list of nominees was as diverse as it’s ever been and there were many notable moments throughout the ceremony.

The biggest thing to take away from the ceremony was that streaming services continued to dominate the major awards. As traditional TV is fading out, Netflix and Amazon are moving in. Netflix won the most awards, taking home 7 of them, but it was Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel that truly stole the spotlight. The Amy Sherman-Palladino comedy took home five awards including the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. These wins made The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel the most awarded show based on telecast awards.

Another notable moment came from Glenn Weiss, who won the Emmy for Best Director of a Variety Special for his work on The Oscars, shocked the audience when he thanked his girlfriend for her support, adding, “You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.” Naturally his nowfiancé, Jan Svedsen, joined him on stage where Weiss took the traditional knee and placed a ring on her finger that had recently belonged to his mother.

In Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Charlie Sheen stayed awake for 48 hours to achieve a suitably wasted look for his cameo.

“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” Movie Review Kiara Carson Arts & Entertainment Editor Knc9459@lockhaven.edu “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” is now a Netflix original movie that was once a book published back in 2014. It’s a story about a junior in high school (Lara Jean Covey) that is dealing with her feelings about a guy who’s dating her older sister.

While explaining that rough situation, she reveals that she has a secret box of five letters which she wrote for the boys she’s “loved” throughout her whole life. They’re only a secret because once she writes them, she never sends them. It’s a way for her to expel her feelings onto a piece of paper so that she doesn’t have to think about them all the time like a coping mechanism.

Long story short, someone releases her letters to those five boys and it causes some confusion especially to her sister’s boyfriend (Josh Sanderson) who’s also one of the boys she wrote a letter for. So, she goes into this whacky, fake relationship with one of the other boys (Peter Kavinsky) she’s wrote a letter for to prove to Josh that she’s not in love with him anymore. A little extreme yes, but it’s a great idea for this teenage love story and it ends up going in a way that makes you want to fall in love. It’s a fairytale that you know isn’t realistic, but if you love romance then it’ll make you believe in strange encounters and unpredictable possibilities.

Before this movie became a major hit on Netflix, it was a book written by Jenny Han and published in 2014. It’s almost 400 pages of greatness about the amazing adventure of love in young Covey’s life.

Also, this is not the only book that Han has created about Covey. The book comes in a series of three which means that once you finish one great book, you can read two more. The sequel being “P.S. I Still Love You” and followed by “Always and Forever, Lara Jean” which kind of gives an indication of the series coming to an end. So, even though there’s only one movie, you can tell by the ending that we haven’t seen the last of Lara Jean Covey on the “big screen”. In fact, there have been rumors floating around from most of the actors involved in the movie

that they would all love to make a sequel, but we all know that we have to wait for the big announcement from Netflix to know what’s really going on.

Until then, binge watching this movie will be the highlight of your young romantic experience.

Why Go Greek?

Sororities and fraternities at Lock Haven have been around since 1921 and still services as a great way to get involved in Lock Haven University campus life. Sororities and fraternities serve as a way to help young college students gain leadership experience and hone in on their interpersonal and organizational skills. This can immensely help when building a resume and trying to apply for future internships or graduate schools.

A big factor of Greek Life also consists of friendship and hopefully gaining some sort of familial bond with your brothers and sisters. The networking opportunities are very attractive to young adults so that they can attain future connections to further their academic career or

that being in Kappa Delta Rho has helped him attain leadership skills and helped him meet some great lifelong friends. Kappa Delta Rho supports the philanthropy “BePositive” which is an organization that helps with finances of children with cancer and also cancer research.

Rauch says that he chose the fraternity that he currently is in because he saw how the chemistry of the brothers meshed so well and how close they were.

Kelsey Benjamin, the Vice President of Alpha Kappa Psi says that Alpha Kappa Psi is a professional co-ed business fraternity whose main goal is to help college students develop the professional tools they need to be successful in their career path. Brotherhood is also at the forefront of the values that Alpha Kappa Psi hold dearly. Some of the brothers’ favorite events are attending business conferences in different locations with other chapters otherwise known as PBLI, gaining a big or little brother, and hanging out at ice shack! Resume building, public speakers, and professional development workshops are another few highlights. their professional work career.

It is also important to also focus on the importance of the community service aspect of fraternities and sororities. Most fraternities and sororities have a certain amount of community service hours that are required every semester or academic year. Community service is an opportunity for individuals to make positive changes around your college campus and the surrounding community.

If you still are unsure of whether or not you want to join Greek Life on campus here are a few testaments from a handful of current Greek life members from various sororities/fraternities on campus.

According to Dakota Trego, the President of Phi Mu Delta, he thinks that the most important aspect of Greek life are the connections and bonds he has attained. “Greek brothers and sisters are always there for you when you need them, they will pick you up when your down as well as keep you in check when you happen to do something wrong.” Dakota’s advice for any students who are unsure of whether or not Greek life is for them is to do your research on each fraternity/ sorority and see what is a good fit for you.

The President of Kappa Delta Rho, Tanner Rauch says that joining a fraternity was the best decision he has ever made. Rauch says

10 Kalista Swartz, the President of Tri Sigma says to come out and take the time to meet the sisters of all four organizations. You never know what you may be missing out on. Tri Sigma’s national philanthropy is the Robbie Page Memorial Fund, that is to help terminally ill children and the March of Dimes, which aids premature babies and their mothers. We also have a local philanthropy called PA Vent Camp. It is a camp held here in central PA where children who are on ventilators can have a week without limitations. They play sports, paint and even zipline. You can also see the Tri Sigma sisters volunteering for highway clean up.

Jordyn Thompson, President of Alpha Sigma Tau says that she encourages anyone interested in Greek life to reach out of their comfort zone and find out what each Sorority or Fraternity here is all about.

Alpha Sigma Tau’s philanthropy is the Clinton County Women’s Center and constantly raising money for victims of domestic violence and abuse. Alpha Sigma Tau also holds an annual event better known as Rock-a-Thon every fall semester. During this time, the sisters of Alpha Sigma Tau rock in rocking chairs as well as participate in canning in order to raise money for the Women’s Center.

Alyssa Henry of Sigma Kappa says that she was never a girl who was interested in Greek life and says that it was a rewarding decision. Henry says that she has made so many friends, not just through Sigma Kappa, but throughout all of Greek Life. Sigma Kappa has 5 philanthropies that they are active apart of. The philanthropies are Sigma Kappa Foundation, Inherit the Earth, Gerontology, Maine

Seacoast Mission, and the Alzheimer’s Association. Henry says, “From a girl who was not the sorority type at all, these are going to be some of the very best times of your life with girls who will become your best friends, maybe even future bridesmaids!”

Eating Healthy at the Dining Hall Catherine Brown Staff Writer Cvb5480@lockhaven.edu If you go into Upper or Lower Bentley any day around noon or five pm, students are elbow to elbow filling up plates, or ordering and waiting for food. Most in Lower will be waiting for quesadillas or pasta, with very few reaching for things in the refrigerators other than drinks. Most in Upper are headed for the home-style or pizza line. While there are fresh and healthy options available in the dining hall, they are normally lack luster compared to the alternatives. A packaged salad of slightly droopy romaine and half a chicken breast with some fatty parts is not as appealing as Chick Fil A nuggets and fries, fresh out of the fryer. Most students will want what is fast and fresh, and might not necessarily have the time or patience to stop and check out what could be better.

For those living in university housing, a meal plan is a requirement, and will auto renew after fall semester. There are twelve available options for those looking to purchase a meal plan, each containing a different number of meal swipes per week or semester, and a certain amount of flex. Each meal swipe

is worth about $7; this covers entry into Upper, or most of a meal in Lower. A swipe into Upper will allow a student to go back for plate after plate of whatever they’d like from more than five lines of hot food, usually including an entrée or two and at least one hot side, often potatoes or a vegetable. For most students living in university housing, this is where they eat the majority of their meals. Dorms are small and not equipped for cooking of almost any sort.

Freshman enjoy a feeling of freedom being at college and away from home, and it does not stop at the dining hall. All-you-can-eat burgers, pizza, pasta, and fried chicken are at their fingertips, so it’s no wonder that the salad bar, sauté bar, and steamed veggies go by the wayside. Veggies are often half defrosted, soggy, or wilted; not the pinnacle of freshness.

Students are bombarding with options, and the things they have to wait for are bypassed for already prepared meals. And who would stop to customize a sandwich or make their own stir fry, when so much is provided already prepared?

For students looking to watch what they eat, whether it’s a medical reason or a lifestyle choice, it can be frustrating to go to Lower and find the pickings slim. “Everything seems to have so much sodium, which is something

I have to look out for,” student Nate Ulmer explains, “since they don’t have the sandwich line anymore, it’s hard to find something with a lot of fresh vegetables. The salads are mostly just lettuce.” Stax was a part of Lower Bentley where students could create their own subs and wraps, but since has been closed and the space used as storage.

Students can fall into the void of overeating or eating poorly very easily with all these factors combined. The Bentley dining hall website offers a website titled “Health & Wellness,” but offers very little information on how best to choose healthy options while enjoying a meal at the dining hall. Cards on hot foods in Upper display some nutritional facts, but not in Lower. So, while resources are available, students must seek them out. This could be updated and prioritized, in addition to promoting and sprucing up the “healthy choice” options available every day.

It may be unfair to say that Bentley lacks fresh food options, because they do. But because the options that consist of fresh veggies are the less popular options, less attention is paid by those insuring that the food looks appetizing. Students can help themselves from falling into cycles of overeating and making poor choices, but Bentley could do more to push a healthy agenda.

Advice to an underclassmen Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu Looking back, there are numerous things that I wish I had known when I first started college.

Unfortunately, I had the typical freshoutta-high school attitude and thought I already knew everything. I- naturallyended up learning a lot about the college experience, mostly due to my failures. The following are some tips for managing in college, without failing as much.

Keep a planner. It takes some time to get used to but these small books with dates can really come in handy. In high school, you’re generally allowed to turn things in late. This is much less the case in college. Most professors are trying to get their students ready for the workforce where a question like “can I turn this in tomorrow?” will get greeted with laughter (especially in journalism).

Sit near the front. I realize that you’d likely see and hear the same things regardless of where you sit, but something about being closer to the professor keeps the day dreaming to a minimum Wait until the end of class to start packing. Let’s be honest, professors can be a mess. They got to where they are by being smart, not organized. Often, a professor won’t remember to tell the class something important until the end. So, Counterintuitively enough, the most important time to pay attention is at the end of class. Too many Freshmen start packing early and start bumbling with their phone. Before they know it, they’re back in class looking clueless while other stu-

dents are passing in assignments.

Join a club. Clubs give students the unique opportunity to find a new hobby, profession or friends. They allow you to become invested in staying at college and doing well. The climate survey report showed that a minority of students join a club and that Lock Haven University has a smaller club membership population than many other universities. This means that many clubs are looking for new leadership and members. This is the best time to get involved and be apart of something great.

Talk to your advisor. In college, it counts to be proactive. You may think that you have everything under control with scheduling and mapping out your future as a college student. I’m here to tell you that you don’t. Have you ever tried to read a degree audit?

I still don’t understand anything about them. Maintain communication with your advisors and ask them questions, they won’t hunt you down to make sure everything is in order but don’t rely on them too heavily, which brings me to my next point.

Think for yourself. College is, for many students, the first time they’re out from underneath their parents. This means that it’s a great opportunity to branch out, explore and map your own future. However, there seems to be a tendency for some students to latch onto a professor, go to their office hours for every small problem or life choice.

Student’s need to make their own decisions. It’s one thing to ask for some advice but it’s another to ask a professor how to live your life.

This are just a few tips to make your college experience a great one, but that’s all they are. Make your college experience your own. Seize the day, stay in school, and work hard to make your future worth living.

Sports Editor mxs3279@lockhaven.edu Serena Williams is one of the greatest of all time. She went pro as a tennis player in 1995. Since 1995, Williams has had 23 Grand Slam single titles.

She is a seven-time Wimbledon singles champion and a six-time Wimbledon doubles champion. She has six US Open single champion titles and two US Open double titles. Along with those successes, she has six Australian Open singles and four Australian Open double titles. The list doesn’t stop there. She has three French Open single titles and two French Open double titles. She even has gold medals from the Olympics. She is a three-time Olympic double gold medalist, and in 2012, as a single, she was a gold medalist. She’s been named “Female Athlete of the Year” and she’s been named “Best Female Athlete of the Decade.” Serena Williams is a woman with many successes under her belt.

Sadly, the journey has not been easy. She has suffered severe injuries, losses, down falls. She has recently stated that she feels she has been discriminated against. Williams recently had a baby and she came back ready to battle. The US Open was recently played August 27-September 9. Williams faced off in the Championship match against 20-year-old Naomi Osaka. Osaka won against Williams in the US Open 6-2, 6-4. Osaka’s victory against one of the worlds greatest athletes makes her Japan’s first Grand Slam champion.

However, there was an immense amount of controversy following Osaka’s win over Williams. Williams was taken out of her game repeatedly as she was called for various violations. According to CNN, the very first violation was illegal coaching by Carlos Ramos. Later, Williams was penalized for breaking her racket, which cost her a point. She was also penalized with verbal abuse to official Carlos Ramos. Williams told him that he was “thief” because she felt the game was stolen from her. What stirred Williams up most was the very first penalty of illegal hand signals by the coach. Williams stated to Ramos, “I don’t cheat. I’d rather lose. Every time I play here, I have problems.” Williams felt like she was cheated, defeated and discriminated against because she is a woman. Williams wanted an apology, which she ended up never getting. According to CNN, Williams stated that, “He’s never taken a game from a man,” adding, “I’m here fighting for women’s rights and for women’s equality and for all kinds of stuff. For me to say “thief” and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a sexist remark.” At the US Open, the crowd was alongside Williams and they “boo’d” throughout the ceremony. Williams demanded they all stop booing and “give credit where it’s due.” Williams was later fined $17,000. $4,000 for the coaching violation, $3,000 for breaking her racket and $10,000 for verbal abuse.

I personally feel as though there was some sort of sexism in the case of Serena Williams and of something personal against Williams. Williams is one of the greatest of all time and nothing will ever strip her of that. She plays with passion and class. She was hurt after the loss against Osaka, but gave her credit and didn’t take her frustrations out on Osaka. Both Williams and world athlete Elena Delle Donne came together to congratulate Osaka and talked about how they need to fight harder for women’s rights and talk about the things that are happening to women in sports.

OPINION 13 Is the United States ready for safe injection sites?

Copy Editor tjm1848@lockhaven.edu An overdose is a very lonely way to die. Overdoses are now the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. According to the Truth’s website, 115 American’s face that reality every day. That means every 12 minutes someone in America dies from an opioid overdose.

Overdoses are caused when a toxic amount of a drug, or combination of drugs, overwhelms the body’s ability to function properly. Opioids effect a part of the brain that controls breathing. If you take too much, the brain begins to slow and eventually stops the person’s breathing completely.

Some of the signs and symptoms of an overdose include unresponsiveness, loss of consciousness, lips turning blue, pinpoint pupils, and depressed heart rate and breathing. Naloxone, or Narcan, is used to reverse the effects of an overdose. It works instantly but only if it is administered shortly after the overdose occurs, as death from an overdose can occur within one to three hours following the ingestion.

In order for someone’s life to be saved by Narcan, someone else has to administer it to them. Unfortunately, 77% of overdoses occur outside of a medical setting where Narcan is readily available. But what if there was a safe place where addicts could go to shoot up their drugs?

Safe injection sites, or SIS, are legally sanctioned, medically supervised facilities designed to cut down on overdoses and eliminate the nuisances associated with public drug use. Addicts are able to consume their illegal drugs under the surveillance of licensed medical professionals whose job is to recognize the signs of an overdose and apply Narcan to those who need it. The idea of safe injection sites is that it will reduce the harmful effects of using drugs on the streets. For instance, these facilities will provide the drug user with access to medical staff, sterile injection equipment, treatment referrals, and information about basic health care. The idea behind this is: We don’t live in a perfect world and people are going to use illegal drugs that could potentially be deadly, but it’s better to give those people struggling with their addiction a space

where they don’t have to look over their shoulder like they do on the street. It’s also ensuring that these addicts aren’t shooting up alone, so that if something does go wrong, there are professionals around that know what to do.

Currently there are no existing open-consumption sites in the US. Outside of the US, 100 safe-injection facilities in 66 different cities operate across the world. One facility that I looked at resides in Vancouver, Canada. The facility, known as InSite, has been visited 3.6 million times since it opened in 2003. Of those visits, they have reversed 6,440 overdoses and not a single person has died under their supervision. That is a lot of lives that this place has saved over the course of 15 years.

Some states in the US are attempting to implement safe injection sites in major cities including New York, Philadelphia, and Seattle. But, the federal government is voicing its opinion that safe injection sites are not a good idea.

The biggest argument against safe injection sites is that they might make drug use seem normal and acceptable. By enabling people to continue using, you are not helping them beat their addiction. It’s argued that if you continue to use heroin, that is inevitably how you will eventually die. My argument is that people are going to use heroin regardless if there is a place to do shoot it up. Being addicted to heroin is bigger than a person’s willpower to quit. Most addicts do want to quit, but the chemical hooks in opioids makes it extremely difficult. That is why we look at addiction as a disease now. Safe injection sites are simply a step in the right direction. Whether it’s getting out of the environment the user has been in, or just having access to safe equipment and information. Another argument against safe injection sites is that it will cause drug users to flock to the area and crime will go up, but the research following these sites does not support that. In fact, public drug use goes down and crime rates stay the same. What the research does show an increase in is lives being saved with Narcan following an overdose.

Most opioid drug users are embarrassed of their battles with addiction and don’t feel comfortable asking for help from those who care about them.

But these people might feel more comfortable discussing their issues with a medical professional in the field. Even if one life can be saved by these facilities, then it will be worth it to someone.

Over the two-game span, Holt netted a team-high three goals (6 pts.).

In 4-0 win over Bloom he scored once and Holt netted two goals in the 6-0 home victory over UPJ Saturday.

In the game against UPJ, Swartz took two shots with one on goal.

Her shot on goal turned out to be the goal that LHU needed to put them up 2-0 and put the game out of reach for the Mountain Cats.

SPORTS Men’s Cross Country opens new season with Dolan Duals

The LHU men’s cross country team opened the season today in traditional fashion, hosting the Dolan Duals.

Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to host the 2018 LHU Invite on Saturday, September 22 on the West Branch Cross Country Course, located at the Stern Athletic Complex.

The men’s 8K will start at 10:30 a.m. and the women’s 6K will go off at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. In all, 16 teams will compete in the men’s race and 18 squads in the women’s race.

Bald Eagles open season vs. Penn State, looking to build off rest: The LHU men haven’t raced since August 31 when they opened the season by hosting NCAA Division I Penn State in the Dolan Duals. Leading the way for Lock Haven was Matthew Oscovitch who was 11th overall with a time of

19:33.03 (6K). Luke Vanderhoff was 14th with a time of 19:49.77 and Mark Matthews finished 15th (20:03.38). The layoff has given LHU plenty of time to train and the Bald Eagles are no doubt, ready to hit the course again at home.

LHU women ranked among region’s top-10: In yesterday’s USTFCCCA Atlantic Region rankings, the LHU women were ranked No. 8. The Bald Eagles started the 2018 season ranked No. 5 in the preseason rankings. A strong race Saturday could see the Bald Eagles jump back into the top-five next week.

Haven women open vs. DI PSU, ready to race again: On August 31, the LHU women opened the season by hosting local DI power Penn State in Dolan Dual action. Laurel Moyer led the way for the Bald Eagles as she did all she could to break up the Penn State mix at the front. Moyer was eighth overall and covered the 4K course in 14:34.82.

Cadie Kiser was LHU’s second finisher (13th, 15:39.19) and Caroline Stickley rounded out Lock Haven’s top-three (14th, 16:09.86). The break has left LHU eager to hit the course again.

Up next: LHU will travel to the Highlander Invitational on Saturday, October 6.

Sports Editor mxs3279@lockhaven.edu LHU sports kicked off at the tail end of August. We’re off to a good start. Women’s Field Hockey stands at 4-3. The Haven will be on the road to face off with LIU Brooklyn while following on Sunday they will face Hofstra on their turf. Women’s Soccer stands at 3-2.

Friday, the Lady Eagles will head to Slippery Rock. On Sunday, they will face off with Shippensburg back home at Stern Athletic Complex at 3:30 p.m. While Men’s Soccer is 4-2-1. Friday, the Men’s Soccer will join the Women’s team to face off with Shippensburg.

They too will face Shippensburg here at the Haven come Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Men’s Soccer will also face Millersville at Millersville on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Football stands at 0-3. This weekend the Bald Eagles will be on the road Saturday they will face East Stroudsburg. Volleyball has the record of 5-6. Friday, the Haven will head to Millersville. Following on Saturday they will get back on the road to head to West Chester.

LHU rolls to big PSAC win, downs UPJ 6-0 The LHU men’s soccer team scored early and often in a big PSAC win Doug Spatafore

Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu The Bald Eagles took full advantage of the fast turf surface tonight at Hubert Jack Stadium, and the goals came early and often as the Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (3-2-1, 2-0 PSAC) netted three goals in each half on the way to a 6-0 win over visiting Pitt-Johnstown (2-3, 0-2 PSAC).

The win marked LHU’s second straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win and leading the way was Reginald Holt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills), who had two goals.

Lock Haven dominated every phase of the game from tonight’s opening whistle and the early pressure paid off in the 23rd minute when Andrew Moore (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) scored the Bald Eagles first goal of the match. Moore cut past the UPJ defense after settling a long pass in from Nicholas Kuster (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North).

Matthew McDermott (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) was sensational from the start and his strong runs up and down the sideline paid off in the 26th minute when he made it 2-0 after a long pass in from Chase Tackett (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty).

Holt made it 3-0 in the 30th minute after knocking in a rebound from an initial shot by Shane Colegrove (Athens, Pa./Athens) who forced a save from the UPJ goalkeeper.

Behind 20 first-half shots, Lock Haven led 3-0.

Colton Dellinger (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) made it 4-0 in the 55th minute when he knocked home a rebound. Dellinger was there to put back a loose ball which came off a save after Moore fired home a shot from just inside the 18-yard box.

Holt scored his second of the game in the 71st minute when he stole the ball from a defender and darted toward goal before sending a shot far post.

The Bald Eagle defensive unit was tough all night, and led by Kuster and Tackett. The Bald Eagles didn’t allow a shot on goal over 90 minutes.

LHU will host Daemen on Tuesday, September 18 at 4 p.m.

Beckham Sibiski (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) put an exclamation point on the offensive surge when he sent a free kick up and over the wall, and into the net from 25-yards out in the 89th minute.

Lock Haven led 2-0 at halftime on goals from Foltz and Josie Swartz. Foltz took a crossing-

pass from Ella Jones (Mohnton, Pa./Reading Area C.C.) and fired the ball far post for the opening goal in the 27th minute. Josie Swartz

made it 2-0 in the 31st after she stole the ball from a Pitt-Johnstown defender and sent the ball far post past the keeper.

Despite a lot of pressure and dominating play in the second half, the two first-half goals were all LHU needed to secure victory. For the game, Lock Haven registered 19 total shots.

Janelle Swartz (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) stood out on defense throughout the 90-minute match.

The Bald Eagles will head to Slippery Rock Friday (September 21) for a PSAC match at 4 p.m.
