Hot Off The Presses

A Letter From The Editors By Tess English & Cassie Keller

Howdy EE Readers! We know things have been a little hectic since a national wide pandemic broke out last year. That’s why we’d like to address the core readers with updates of what/has gone on behind the newsroom doors. As journalists, we strive for transparency and open communication with the public. The first major announcement is that Eagle Eye has moved to an all online format. The print edition is no more. The first reasoning for this is pandemic-related. Since Lock Haven didn’t house many students there was no one really on campus to read the paper. For social distancing and convenience, the club switched to an online model. Additionally, the journalism industry is making a big shift to an online format. We wanted our paper to be on trend with the industry standard. Readers can now find our features on our website, https://lhueagleeye.wordpress.com/. The full publication is posted on our ISSUU: https:// issuu.com/lhu_eagle_eye. Touching on social distancing protocol leads us to our next announcement. While the Eagle Eye newsroom is our usual corner at 113 in the PUB, for the semester the club has temporarily relocated to working out of the Raub computer lab in room 106. This gives the staff more space to social distance and stays healthier. Another point of interest is staff changes. Our managing editor Kiara Carson left because she graduated. Tess English has left her position as the online manager to fulfill her role alongside Cassie Keller to lead the Eagle Eye staff. Additionally, we gained three new editors for the A & E, Lifestyles, and Sports sections. The club was also lucky enough to find a replacement online manager, Kassidee Wozniak. Now let’s move on to new business. The club threw a fundraiser this semester. We hosted a video game night in the PUB. The game night consisted of free play, two tournaments, and raffling off a few baskets. The goal was to raise money for club special budget funds. We are working to make this an every-semester fundraiser as we hope to host another game night in the spring. Lastly, We’d like to thank you readers for your viewership. Without you guys reading, our efforts to inform the public would be fruitless. Your continued patronage of our paper allows us to gain real-world experience in journalism. This is an invaluable gift our staff cherishes deeply. We hope to be a trusted and reliable news source for everyone for years to come.

We’d like to take a chance to get the know the staffers beind the publication. Put faces to names you see frequently published in the paper. Meet Cassie Keller: Hi I’m Cassie. I am a senior Communication major on the journalism track. I have been one of the managing editors since the spring semester 2019. I love writing for the Eagle Eye and writing fiction in my spare time. Other than laying out the paper each week, I really love the community environment we’ve built around the club. It really feels like a family here.

Eagle Eye Newsletter Meet Kassidee Woznaik- A sophomore majoring in communications with a focus on the journalism track at LHU. I joined the Eagle Eye the fall semester of 2021, my current position is online editor. My hobbies include writing, cooking vegan food, journaling my thoughts, reading romance novels, watching anime, listening to music, playing videogames, and scrolling through social media. My dream job is to become a writer for either a blog or magazine that is accepting of various opinions. Meet Kerri Hoover- Hello! My name is Kerri Hoover, and I’m a junior Communication major at Lock Haven University. I’m in the Advertising and Public Relations track while also minoring in Business. I started in the Fall of 2020 as the Sports Editor and gradually worked my way up to News Editor. I’m also responsible for creating the front cover and designing section templates. When I’m not busy with schoolwork or editing in the newsroom, you can find me working on-campus at the Career Center, crafting, binge-watching my favorite TV shows, and hanging out with my family, friends, and 3 pet rabbits. Meet Alex Ross-All through high school, I was highly invested in writing, mainly about news and my opinions on art, music, literature, and film. After graduating from Saint Marys Area High School in 2019, I took a gap year. Through this gap year, I realized my love for journalism and decided it would be in my best interest to go to school for it. In the fall of 2020, I was accepted to Lock Haven University and am currently a sophomore. I am a part of three clubs, one of which being the Eagle Eye where I am the current Arts & Entertainment Section Editor. After graduating from LHU, I hope to work for a music or film news site, interviewing musicians and filmmakers on their work. Meet Krissy Turner- I’m from Clearfield, PA. In all of my years of being in college, I went from studying computer animation to psychology and now to communication. I am studying to be a movie critic because it combines my writing skills with my love of movies. While at Lock Haven I started writing for the student newspaper, the Eagle Eye. I started writing movie reviews and flourished out into Lifestyles and Opinions. I was the Lifestyles editor for a bit and am now the Opinions Editor for the remaining time that I have at Lock Haven University. After graduation, I will be looking for a full-time job in my hometown of Clearfield to start off with. Meet Levi Deitz- I’m 21 years old, and I’ve been a member of the Eagle Eye since the Fall of 2020. I joined the Eagle Eye to fulfill a class requirement. I am a communication major on the journalism track, so I needed 24 hours of time put into one of the communication clubs on campus. My position on the Eagle Eye is Copy Editor, which means that I edit everyone’s stories before they are published. Working on the Eagle Eye is one of the highlights of my week because, even though I’m working, I don’t feel as much pressure as I do for my classes. I also enjoy talking with the other staff members about how our other comm nication classes are going. Meet Kit Taveras- She is the current lifestyles editor. Kit is an invaluable member of the team who’s subtle wit keeps all on our toe. Even though she is first year staffer she is quick learner who puts out awesome designs. Kit is an undoubted staple of the EE Staff. Meet Thomas Kaikai- Thomas is another new addition to the staff! He is the current sports editor. This is invauable skill as the rest our staff is sports averted. He’s funny and very low key. Thomas works incredibly hard and has progressed signigicantly since he’s started with us this semester.

ClubAchievements This semester the Eagle Eye gained four new members: Alex, Kassidee, Kit, and Thomas. This means we have enough staff to fill out all of our section editors for the first time in a long time. This also allows us to produce more content each week. Traditionally regular section pieces, like Horrorscopes and Billboards, might be swapped out for additional content. T The Eagle Eye has started fundraising. Mid-October we held our first event that was open to the public. This was a game night where students had a chance to participate in gaming tournaments for cash prizes, Additionally, we raffled off baskets at this event. Overall we raised a little under $100. We also have cranked out 10 issues this semester. We have one more publication and it will go live this Friday afternoon on our Issuu.

NextSemesterGoals We plan to continue our fundraising efforts. We have another game night in the works for the spring semester, but the details are tentative. However, we are relaunching efforts to start advertising. Cassie Keller has led the charge on this revitalization and has come up with our new advertising prices. Our budget has allowed us to upgrade our WordPress membership. This gives us a chance to start updating our site to be more aesthetically pleasing. Our online manager, Kassidee, and Managing Editor Tess will oversee this project together. Another exciting online goal is to get on a more consistent posting schedule with our social media. We are specifically looking forward to ramping up productionor Instagram. We are also looking to use our Instagram for photojournalism purposes, but there are no definitive plans on when the club will start. Last, but certainly not least, we are always looking for more staff to grow the club. Being able to provide content, in hopefully a variety of ways, is a crucial goal of any news organization. Check out the next page to see how you can find a home in our weird, but spunky club.
