Most borrowers will have to apply in order to re ceive forgiveness, but some are not required to, as the information for their income is already on file due to their repayment plans. President Joe Biden announced two weeks ago his cabinet and the U.S. Department of Education have developed a plan for federal student loan forgiveness. The three-part plan will cover up to $20,000 for those who have a federal student loan and have an income of less than $125,000 per year. Biden has also extended the pause on paying back student loan debt until Dec. 31, 2022.

Lock Haven University (LHU) officially welcomed students back on August 22. With the start of the school year comes the “Haven Traditions” during the first week of classes. These events are strong LHU traditions that aid in bringing togeth er the student body, regardless of your major. These events began on August 21, with the New (Academic) Year’s Eve event. This event heavily resembles a typical New Year’s Eve party at the University Commons, where there’s music, food, drinks, and games to be had by all.

On Wednesday, August 24, was the Sex Ed Boot Camp in Price Auditorium. Dr. Joni Frater & Esther Lastique hosted the event where they edu cated students about the importance of safe sex, how to practice it and what to do if you have an STI. The hosts also incorporated comedy within the show, which created a more lighthearted tone for the students in attendance.

Thursday, August 25, held our favorite events for us at the Eagle Eye. The Involvement Fair was held from 11-2 on Ivy Lane, and the turnout was impressive compared to what we saw during the last academic year. So many students came out to take a look at the many clubs and so cial groups that we have on campus. In speaking with a number of other club repre sentatives, the amount of club growth this year seems to be large, with many students becoming more involved on campus— this seemed to be a struggle for the majority once we returned to cam pus last fall. Our favorite Haven Tradition, though, is the Color Splash that takes place at the University Commons.

Color Splash is messy, but worth it. When we at the Eagle Eye realized none of us had ever gone, we made it a point to go. Upon arrival, students are given a white t-shirt to really make the colors pop. There’s a square marked in the grass that shows the boundaries of where this event will be held, and students are directed to line up around thisAsboundary.soonasstudents are directed to go, colorful chaos begins. There are ketchup bottles littering the ground that are full of colored chalk dust. The second that you’re wielding one, you’re given the power to make a mess of your friends by spray ing chalk at them. Just try to avoid the eyes, and maybe the ears!

Blonde is the title of the new Marilyn Monroe biopic directed by Andrew Dominik, starring Ana de Armas, and based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates. With big names attached to a product about the contentious life of a legendary actress, there were bound to be some controversies. When the film was rated by the Mo tion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the association gave it an NC-17 rating, meaning no children 17 or under are admitted to see it. The rating is due to “some sexual content.”When news of this decision broke, critics and Monroe fans alike were concerned over whether this movie would be exploitative of Mon roe’s tragic life. In a Jezebel article, Kady Ruth Ashcraft is worried Mar ilyn will be over-sexualized, wondering if the focus on her status as a sex symbol could cause the film to fail at its goal of humanizing a larger-than-life figure.

Ana de Armas, the actress that plays the fictionalized version of Marilyn Monroe stated in a L’Officiel magazine article that the rating made her feel confused. Dominik, the film’s director, was shocked by the call as well. The controversy didn’t end there, as more fans criticized de Armas’s accent in the trailer, believing her native Cuban accent was too strong. One viewer of the trailer stated that her accent was too “heavy” and didn’t provide a convincing performance as Monroe. This goes against the actress’s claims that she went through nine months of dia lect training to get Monroe’s accent right.Despite the criticisms, the Mon roe estate has expressed their ex citement for her performance and the film’s release. Marc Rosen, the president of Authentic Brands Group (ABG), the company that owns Monroe’s estate, stated that “Any actor that steps into that role knows they have big shoes to fill.”

He later exclaims that the estate “can’t wait to see the film in its en tirety.”Other celebrities and producers praised de Armas’ performance, with co-producer Brad Pitt saying, “She is phenomenal in it.” Tony Curtis, an actor who co-starred with Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot, praised de Armas. “I dropped to the floor. I couldn’t believe it. Ana was completely gone. She was Marilyn.”Blonde will be released on Netflix Sept. 28 and is rated NC-17.

In recent months many Nickel odeon stars have opened up about their time at the network, discuss ing disturbing allegations about working conditions and behavior. Many have come forward to talk about one man in particular, Dan Schneider, a producer who had allegations of verbal abuse, sexualizing scenes and seemed hostile towards femaleManywriters.might wonder why now?

As a society, we are often per ceived as portraying psychiatric illness in a negative, stigmatiz ing, and even dangerous way. This causes many celebrities to hide their traumatic past in the industry as they think no one would believe them. They also feel at fault in the entire situation, but why are so many actors/actresses speaking out against their network experiences?

Sept. 09, 2022

A common quote used among these Nickelodeon stars is “I did not feel safe around Dan Schneider” or “Nickelodeon didn’t protect me” “costumes for the shows were not age appropriate and very sexual ized.” These stars are now older and understand that these events or situations were not their fault, it was the Channel’s fault as they were supposed to protect them while working on set. But instead, they just offered settlement money to never speak about the traumatic issues that went on in that studio. How much longer would the channel keep protecting the producers or people higher up in the food chain that keep abusing their power over these young children/ adults. How much longer until the point gets across the board about how producers sexualize these young stars until something is done about this industry.

For those unfamiliar with $uicideboy$, they are a rap duo who make music about dealing with drug addiction, relationship problems, and mental illnesses. I discovered their music back in 2017, and the first song I heard from them was “For the Last Time.” Their music helped me get out of a dark place mentally, which is why I’m forever grateful I discovered them on SoundCloud. The Grey Day tour celebrates their newest album titled “Sing Me a Lullaby, My Sweet Temptation.” My current favor ite songs from the album include “Genesis,” “THE_EVIL_ THAT_MEN_DO,” and “Escape from BABYLON.”

Review of ‘Grey Day’ Tour 2022

Sept. 6 is the day that I attended $uicideboy$’ Grey Day 2022 tour. Ever since I ordered the tickets, I’ve been full of anticipation waiting for the moment I heard Scrim and Ruby live. A total of eight artists performed including $uicideboy$ as the headliners. The concert lasted for approximately five hours, starting at 6 p.m. and ending 11 p.m. I am going to discuss my experience at the con cert and review the Grey Day 2022 tour.

The Grey Day 2022 tour is my new favorite concert experience, and I can’t wait to buy tickets for their next year’s tour. Through this experience, I learned it’s bet ter to arrive at the concert early to avoid missing the opening artists. I was surprised to have enjoyed the clash Knock Loose brought to the concert and seeing the crowd’s reaction to their music. Out of all the artists I’ve seen live, $uicideboy$ is easily the best, and I can of ficially check off seeing them live from my bucket list. I hope my experience encourages more people to listen to $uicideboy$, and to maybe buy a ticket to experience the Grey Day 2022 tour for themselves. Kassidee Wozniak Opinions kbw191@lockhaven.eduEditor

My favorite moment of his per formance was when he gave out water to the crowd for them to throw during a certain beat of a song.

The other seven artists that perform at the Grey Day 2022 tour include Ski Mask the Slump God, $not, Maxo Kream, DJ Scheme, JPEGMAFIA, Knocked Loose, and Code Orange. I was only able to see a total of five artists that night because of traffic on the way to the venue, ar riving around 7 p.m. Maxo Kream was finishing up his set when I found my ticket section. $not was the next artist to perform, and was the only artist of the day to physically join the mosh pit during the performance. At the end of his performance, I went to the merch stand and bought three shirts; two of them were $uicideboy$’s merch and the other was a generic tour shirt. I appreciate the mix-up of genres, especially with Knocked Loose’s set because they were the only hardcore metalsounding band compared to the majority of predominant rap artists. Another thing I highly appreciated was when Ski Mask sang tribute songs to deceased artists Juice Wrld and XXXTentacion.

2. Establish a good relationship with your academic advisor. This piece of advice is crucial to your academic access here at LHU. Each student will be assigned an academic advisor within their major de partment. Make sure to establish a good relationship with this person because you’ll be seeing them a lot over the course of four years for scheduling purpos es and approving various forms. If you don’t seem to connect with your advisor, feel free to change to another professor in your department whom you like and would enjoy visiting more frequently.

As a seasoned Lock Haven senior, I composed a list of five pieces of advice for freshmen in order to help them maximize their years at Lock Haven University while also making them successful. So, listen up freshman!

Being a first-time college student can be an ex citing milestone in one’s life, but it can also be extremely intimidating. More than likely, this is your first chance at living on your own away from family. Trying to balance coursework, employment, and a social life all while being in a new environment can be tricky. However, once you figure it out, the result is always rewarding.

3. Try out an on-campus job. On-campus employ ment provides a close and convenient location for you to work while allowing you to earn some money. Additionally, you can build connections and poten tial references with your employers as well as form life-long friendships. In fact, I met my best friend through an on-campus job opportunity. Be sure to check out the weekly Student Activities email regularly or contact the Career Center in Ulmer to find out what places are hiring.

4. Befriend someone in each of your classes/Befriend an on-campus resident if commuting. Seeing a familiar face, especially in your larger gen-ed classes, might make the classroom experience less nervewracking and more enjoyable for you. No one likes walking into a class not knowing anyone. Plus, if you happen to miss class, you can always get notes from your friends without having to ask the professor. You can also study together for exams and have a part ner to work with on group assignments and projects.

5. Utilize free on-campus resources. There’s a whole bunch of free resources provided at LHU, many of which include various tutoring and media services, career preparation, studying locations, and fitnessEachequipment.pieceofadvise listed above are tips I’ve followed personally, and I’m convinced that my college experience has drastically enhanced because of them. Therefore, try these out and see what happens. I’d be willing to bet that they’ll help you enjoy your time at LHU way more if you do!

1. Get active on-campus. One of the best ways to feel like you’re connected and belong on-campus is by joining a club or organization. It wasn’t until I joined my first club that I started to actually enjoy college and make friends. There are over 100 clubs and or ganizations to choose from at LHU, so there’s some thing for everyone. Check out this link to browse through the different options. Be sure to stay tuned for information about upcoming club and involvement fairs.

Button Ups. Thrift stores have some of the weirdest button ups and they make everyone look hotter. Like sweaters, shop in all sections.

Hats. Be careful about hats—not only are they a big statement, but if you thrift them you should be cautious about lice. Buy a hat and leave it in a box—be honest with yourself: you prefer the aes thetic of being a hat person to actually wearing the hat.

Boots. You probably shouldn’t thrift sneakers, but for cheap pair of fall boots that last about a year, a thrift store is a great alternative to amazon.

How to thrift for a fall wardrobe

Leather Jackets. There is no reason to buy a brand-new leather jacket. Every thrift store I have ever visited has had at least five of them in various sizes. If you like leather jacket for this fall, thrift it.

America is big fan of over-consumption. Thrifting clothes has become a trend, partially due to rising costs but also due to the overabundance of unwant ed worn clothes. While there is no practical expectation that all these clothes can be repurposed, the trend towards thrifting can add a layer of appre ciation to the wearer. Thrifting is mostly popular among women, but there is no reason a person of any gender wouldn’t want to spice up their ward robe by thrifting this fall.

Try out some weird styles of jeans, and don’t be afraid to tailor them so they fit you better—that’s part of the fun of thrifting.

Flannels. Every flannel you buy used has a sto ry—if you didn’t steal it from someone you know, you can lie about it, and say it belonged to your brother who died two years ago, and wearing it reminds you that he’s still near, watching. Almost any flannel is a good flannel, but the best ones are slightly oversized; try to avoid ones with too much polyester as they can develop a weird texture when washed too frequently.

Midi-skirts. Try to find something with unique patterns and interesting colors—fall can get very rainy, and as days get shorter and the skies get cloudier, colorful skirts add some life as the world is dying.Ifyou do go thrifting, I recommend looking around for smaller thrift stores in addition to chains like Goodwill and Salvation Army, as a small way to be more involved in your community. Have fun thrifting and happy fall!

Krysta Nordland Staff Writer kfn9993@lockhaven.edu

Jeans. Jeans have been a staple in wardrobes since the 70’s, and they aren’t going out of style, even though the cuts keep changing. Because of rapidly evolving trends, almost every cut of jean has a place, but keep an eye out for worn patches and stretchy fabrics, which wear much faster.

Sweaters. I recommend women buy oversized men’s sweaters and men by oversized women’s sweaters, just to spice things up. Wearing clothes made for a different gender challenges our market ing overlords.

Response to Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan

Levi ManagingDeitzEditorlwd6497@lockhaven.edu

An obvious positive to this plan is that Americans won’t have to worry about paying off thousands of dollars in debt, and they can put the money they’ll save toward other needs, such as housing or transportation. According to Brittanica, “Student loan debt prevented about 400,000 people from buy ing homes between 2005 and 2014, which accounted for 25% of the decrease in home-ownership.” To be honest, I’ve never even thought about buying a house because I couldn’t never see a way where I’d be able to save up enough, even if I were to have a well-paying job.

Opinions Sept. 09, 2022 12

This plan brings up a few issues, however. Even if people with current student loan debt use this plan to their advan tage, what’s going to stop the debt from accumulating? Ac cording to the Federal Reserve, there is currently over $1.75 trillion owed in student loans spread across 48 million Ameri cans. The cost of education is going to continue to rise, so even if we forgive people’s debt now, the next generation of college students is going to be in debt as well. According to CNBC, the cutoff date for student loan debt relief is June 30, 2022. This means that loans taken out after that date won’t be eligible for relief. The cycle of debt won’t end unless the cost of education is somehow lowered.

On Wednesday August 24, President Biden announced a student loan forgiveness plan that would see $10,000 of debt eliminated from most borrowers. This is obviously of inter est to me because I am one of the millions of Americans with student loan Accordingdebt.tothe White House, “The Department of Educa tion will provide up to $20,000 in debt cancellation to Pell Grant recipients with loans held by the Department of Educa tion, and up to $10,000 in debt cancellation to non-Pell Grant recipients.” The Department of Education will provide $20,000 to those whose income is less than $125,000 per year, and married couples whose income is less than $250,000.

I think that student loan forgiveness is a good short term solution to a larger problem. While I’m happy to see so many people being relieved of the stress of student debt, what about future students? Theoretically, they are going to be facing higher tuition prices anyways, and student debt forgiveness is going to allow colleges to keep raising their prices. The cost of education is the real issue, in my opinion. The reason students need to take out these loans is because it’s just not realistic for the average person to put themselves through college on one job alone anymore.

To go along with my previous point, if student debt keeps being forgiven in the future, this will cause colleges to increase tuition due to the larger amount of loans being taken out. Peo ple will be willing to take out more loans, thinking that it will be forgiven. Abigail Hail Blanco, Assistant Professor of Eco nomics at the University of Tampa, said, “If schools knew the government would forgive the cost of their students’ education, they’d face no incentive to cut costs to keep tuition down.”

Is NFL salary cap real

This is when some started questions cap space. But what people fail to notice is how the Rams structured these deals and other offseason moves to save Accordingcap. to Spotrac, Robinson and Wagner have only a combined $6.8 million cap hit despite signing big deals. The Rams have also saved cap by releas ing, or trading players. They traded wide receiver Robert Woods to the Tennesee Titans which saved $13.5 million in cap, according to TheRamsWire. They also cut ties with their longtime punter John ny Hekker which saved almost $4 million in cap, which is the most for any punter.

Star left tackle Andrew Whitworth retired, saving the Rams $16 million in cap space. They also restructured tight end Tyler Higbee’s contract by converting his salary into a signing bonus, saving $4 Themillion.Rams

let outside linebacker Von Miller and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. walk in free agen cy, saving $1.5 million. Also leaving in free agency was cornerback Darius Williams, linebacker Ogbon nia Okoronkwo, defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph, and offensive lineman Austin Corbett saving almost $9.5 Sometimesmillion.capspace can be complicated. There is a lot more to the salary cap than seeing lots of players on a team signing huge deals.

There has been increasing discussions in the past years about whether the salary cap in the Na tional Football League (NFL) is real. A salary cap is an agreement that places limits on the amount of money teams can spend on players. According to nfl.com, the salary cap for the 2022 season will be set at $208.2 million. It seems every year, there is one team that has many players on their roster with huge contracts, which means they are over the cap, correct? Wrong. NFL teams structure contracts in a way a player’s cap hit is not as large as their contracts seems to be.

Take the Los Angeles Rams, for example. After winning the Super Bowl, they were $22.5 million over the cap. Despite that, the Rams went out and signed linebacker Bobby Wagner on a five-year, $50 million deal, and also signed wide receiver Allen Robinson to a three-year, $46.3 million deal.

Women’s Rugby looks to reinvigorate club

Sports Sept. 09, 2022 14

It’s looking like the Women’s Rugby team is off to a good, refreshing start and they’re always looking for more players. As a no-cut team, students are always welcome to join regardless of their experi ence level. Whether you’re an experienced player or looking for a new sport to try that is full of em powering women, I’d recommend joining the rugby team.Any students who are looking to join, or would like more information about the club may contact Delani Yost at dry8719@lockhaven.edu or Olivia Everhart at ove5556@lockhaven.edu.

The Women’s Rugby team here at Lock Haven University has been re-building from the ground up since the fall 2021 semester. Delani Yost, President, and Olivia Everhart, Vice President, are the students who brought the team back last fall. Yost and Everhart have seven years of combined experience in the sport, and have their goals set for the upcoming season. In speaking with Everhart, she stated that she would like to teach a lot of new girls about the sport she loves. They also want to get the ball rolling in regards to hosting some live games. As this team is entirely self-coached, their experience can come in handy until they hopefully get their former high school coach to step in to help. Recruitment is a huge part of being able to bring this team back, so Yost and Everhart have been working hard at getting the word out. Meet ing students at the involvement fair, word of mouth, and hanging up flyers have been their main forms of recruitment, and it’s been successful thus far. As of right now, they have fifty women signed up and are hoping that a majority of them will stick around as the season continues.

Women’s Volleyball falls during 2022 Bald Eagle Classic

Sept. 09, 2022

Sports15

Lock Haven University Women’s Volleyball hosted the 2022 Bald Eagle Classic on Sept. 3. They faced off against Lake Erie and Glenville State in 1-3 and 0-3 losses, respectively. This drops the Lady Eagles to an 0-7 record for the season. The first match that took place was versus Lake Erie. LHU started off strong with a first set 25-18 victory. It was all misfortune after that however for the Eagles as they lost the next three sets: 16-25, 21-25, and 19-25. Gabriela Fialova (#7), was the primary offensive and defensive player of the match, with nine kills, one ace and 22 digs. Emma Kelly (#11), was close behind on the kill count with 8. She also totaled 2 blocks, and an ace.

Setter Kelly Gaston (#4) had 19 assists in the match with 4 kills and 3 aces. Errors were a huge factor in this match, with LHU having more errors than kills. In their match against Glenville State, LHU was beaten in all three sets, 16-25, 15-25, and 21-25. Emma Kelly led the team with nine kills. Mandy Altsman (#9), a true-freshmen, had 14 assists, and Madison Eckley (#10) lead defensively with 16 digs. The Lady Eagles next tournament is at Seton Hill on Sept. 9 and 10. They’ll be facing Concord, Seton Hill, Pitt-Johnstown, and Point Park.

When you consider the state of the team today, they’ve been having some performance issues that are similar to what was experienced in the early 90s. However, 2021-22 season has been deemed by fans as the start of another new era in Sabres history. This era was initially marked by the Jack Eichel trade to the Vegas Golden Knights, but as the season went on and the Sabres saw more success than they had grown used to, fans have started to rejoice yet again, as a new fire has been sparked for this team. When you consider the history of this iconic jer sey, and compare it to recent successes the team has had, it only seems fitting that the “goathead” is making a comeback.

Buffalo Sabres: The “goathead” is back

On top of this moment, the team made it to the Eastern Conference Final in 1998, 1999, and 2006. They won the Eastern Conference Final in 1999, taking this jersey to the Stanley Cup Final, but ultimately lost the Cup to the Dallas Stars. This jersey marked a fresh, new, successful era at the time.

Buffalo Sabres fans woke up to some big news on Aug. 31. The infamous “goathead” is back. This iconic black, red, and white jersey with a very different logo will be coming back as the alter nate jersey and will be debuted on Nov. 23, for their ‘90s night game against the St. Louis Blues. It’ll be worn for a total of 12 times during the upcoming 2022-23 season. This jersey was first introduced for the 199596 season, and stuck around for good reason— it seemed like a good luck charm for a number of years.
