LHU Chief of Police promises students safety

Following up with Chief of Police, Timothy Stringer, on sexual assault and domestic violence, Stringer reinsures, “Your voice matters, your story matters, and you will be heard.” No matter what has happened, Stringer made very clear that students will be safe, given resources and assisted when needed. He states students’ wellbeing and safety is all that matters.

After speaking with multiple students, the consensus is they feel like Lock Haven’s campus police are not taking the peroper measure to help victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Stringer, however, assures that campus police are doing their best to keep the students safe and uphold a welcoming community.

Lock Haven University has admitted there is a problem with sexual assault and domestic violence on campus. To combat this, Stringer mentioned he will be holding a self-defense class later in the semester once they have the staff to do so.

This would be a great opportunity for stu dents to learn self-defense skills in the event he or she winds up in a potentially dangerous situation.

Stringer also wanted to make clear that once some thing is reported, they im mediately investigate the situation and point victims towards resources available to them.

Regarding the allegations that some sports team coaches know of players sexually assaulting women on campus, Stringer stated they are legally required to come forward as mandated reporters. Any refusal or negligence to report on such situations would result in charges pressed against them.

If you know anything about domestic violence or sexual assault happening on campus, do the right thing and contact public safety at (570) 484-2278 if on campus or call 911.

Lock Haven University professors face potential lay-offs

Fourteen professors at Lock Haven University face potential layoffs at the end of the 202223 academic year pending letters of intent to retrench sent to various faculty. The looming retrenchment stems from letters of intent to retrench sent during the previous academic year, which included 23 letters sent to both Lock Haven and Mansfield professors that have since dwindled in number.

Mansfield University, another school under Commonwealth, had originally been sent six letters of intent to retrench. However, due to circumstances such as retirement, faculty leaving the university for other work and ongoing assessment of program needs, these letters have been removed and none currently exist at MU at the time of this article being written. The original 23 letters overall have been reduced to sixteen at LHU, with two pending removal.

According to an anonymous source, there are several factors that may contribute to these letters being sent. One such reason given by PASSHE, Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education located in Harrisburg, is the uneven student-to-faculty ratio and the metrics the university is required to meet. Another is the intention to save money for Commonwealth as a whole. These reasons, however, have been contested by the Association of Pennsylvania State College & University Faculties, or APSCUF, who state the motivations are not in line with their collective bargaining agreement.

There are also concerns the union has with

retrenchments being conducted during this academic year. Originally, money had been sent by the state government to be set aside for the state system, which included a percentage amount meant to prevent retrenchments from occurring until at least 2024.

Since then, no confirmation has been sent to professors this academic year to ensure their continued employment at the university once the spring 2023 semester concludes. This means salaries are not yet assured to be covered for the 2023-24 academic year.

Though APSCUF does not agree with the reasons the letters were sent, the process of issuing grievances is lengthy and cannot guarantee affected staff their employment will remain intact while in progress. This raises further cause for worry as faculty may need to seek new employment during the unstable job environment the current pandemic brings.

Regardless, the situation remains ongoing.

Playlist: Grunge Basics

Where’s that one from?

Last week’s movie: Twilight

Grunge music is mostly associated with the 90s and Seattle, the appreciation of the music should not be forgotten by newer generations. What is the sound of grunge?

Grunge music incorporates angsty, dark, and feminist lyrics with a reliance on the use of bass and electric guitar to achieve a heavy blend of punk and metal sound. This playlist is curated to bring life back to this beloved genre and prove to new listeners why grunge is not dead.

“Down in a Hole” by Alice In Chains

Love is a scary concept. How does one know they met their soulmate? The song ‘Down in a Hole’ can help clarify romance frustrations. Jerry Contell, guitarist and songwriter, wrote this song to describe his love for his love interest, Courtney Clarke. This song is the fourth track from the Dirt album released in 1992.

“Black Hole Sun” by SoundGarden

Contrary to the upbeat catchy melody of the chorus, the speaker is begging for the end of the world to consume them into nothingness as shown by the lyric “Black hole sun won’t you come/And wash away the rain?” In the song’s music video, there are obvious subliminal messages such as the corruption of religion, and dangers of suburbia. This song is the seventh track from the Superunknown album released in 1994.

“In Bloom” by Nirvana

Similar to the song “Black Hole Sun”, both include a captivating melody. This can catch the listeners off guard if not paying attention to the lyrics. The song criticizes fans who enjoy their music but not understanding the meaning behind the

songs. Nirvana is known for popularizing the grunge sound but haven’t made music since the passing of their Kurt Cobain, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter, in 1994. This song is the second track from the Nevermind album released in 1991.

“Hunger Strike” by Temple of the Dog

How can listeners’ not fall in love with the blend of vocals from Chris Cornell, lead singer of AudioSlave and SoundGarden , and Eddie Vendor, lead singer of Pearl Jam. The underlying message of the song is ex pressing the loss of equality in the world. Also, bringing attention to classism and the power struggle of the poor with lyrics such as, “But I can’t feed on the powerless, when my cup’s already overfilled”. This song is the sixth track from the Temple of the Dog album released in 1990.

“Black” by Pearl Jam

Experiencing unrequited love? The song “Black” tells a sad story about watch ing someone you love with another person and the feeling of unreciprocated love. Lyrics such as “All the love gone bad turned my world to black” expresses the immense impact love has on an individual when their lover leaves them for another person. This song is the fifth track from the Ten album released 1990.

This playlist has a total of five songs that captures the sound of grunge for new listeners. There are more bands and art ists that produce grunge music not men tioned in this article such as the Melvins, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Stone Temple Pilots, Silverchair and many more. If inter ested in checking out the playlist, click this link to the Eagle Eye’s account on Spotify.

Disney faces big controversey from

‘Little Mermaid’

Disney is making waves with another live action remake of The Little Mermaid (2023). However, since the trailer was released in early September this year, the studio has encountered controversy.

The internet population has reacted negative ly to the trailer, which received 1.5 million dislikes on YouTube. The dislikes are attributed to the fan reaction of casting Halle Bailey, a black actress, in the role Ariel. This follows a trend of internet outrage flaming whenever predomi nantly white media becomes more diverse.

The Disney Princess franchise has been criti cized in the past for promoting regressive ideas with overly white and idealized faces and bod ies. More recently they have found pushback on the inclusion of protagonist women of color from irate internet commenters, varying from some companies’ lack of cultural nuance and others wary that companies are encouraging represen tation of beliefs they disagree with, like mermaids with melanated skin.

Both groups criticize Disney for using colored characters as props to virtue signal that they are politically correct. This backlash also happened in their Star Wars franchise reboot, with characters of color like Fin and Rose, whose ac tors were harassed viciously on a variety of dif ferent platforms.

This is not unique to Disney productions, and similar backlash has been witnessed for shows like Rings of Power (2022) and The Sandman(2022), which also cast black actors for roles that were previously assumed to be white.

While the negative response to the diverse casting was very loud, there was an equal out pouring of love from parents posting videos of their little girls reacting to the trailer with ex citement. Many advocates for Disney’s casting choice laude the future generation’s embrace of their natural features based on their presence in their most loved characters.

Red haired characters have a history of being re-cast as people of color, perhaps due to redhaired character’s tendency to portray a sense of otherness, but for little girls. Still, the history of the character does not matter as much to little girls as seeing a beautiful mermaid who looks like them on screen.

Genre deep dive: Post punk

A defining portion of music creation is trying to balance between commercial appeal and honest ex pression. How can musicians stay true to themselves while also giving an audience a reason to listen?

This is a question many musicians struggled with, but in the 1970s, a subsection of rock artists in England and America discovered they didn’t have to appeal to the mainstream. As a matter of fact, they didn’t have to appeal to anyone but themselves.

They musically returned to the simplistic roots of rock’n’roll from the 1950s with a strong sense of anger. However, they stylistically were outcasts, mis fits, burdens to a conformist society with dyed hair, dirty clothes, unflattering jewelry, and an aggressive anti-establishment attitude defining them.

This new genre was described as “punk” by the media, but bands that lacked any care for the media generally rejected the term. Groups like Sex Pistols, Ramones, and New York Dolls all fell under this new term.

After this punk genre peaked in the mid-70s, other bands took influence. These groups were definitively punk, but didn’t fit neatly with the precedent punk definition, as they mixed in other genres, like dance and electronic. Under these conditions, “postpunk” was born. Groups like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Public Image Ltd., and Gang of Four, despite all showcasing different styles and subjects, fell un der this newly-named class of music.

The late 70s were riddled with uniquely off-kil tered artists that pushed the boundaries of what mu sicians can express within their songs. Joy Division provided an extreme melancholic dread through out their debut record “Unknown Pleasure” in the U.K.

While across the ocean in America, Talking Heads were awkwardly grooving their way into New York nightclubs with their own debut “Talking Heads:77.” Punk was defined by aggression, but these post-punk bands focused more on other human emotions, like

fear, nostalgia, or even love. They stretched the defi nition of rebellion, morphing it into something palat able to most. Post-punk bands popped up all over the western world, and even older bands noted the genre as an influence, like Fleetwood Mac did on their 1979 album “Tusk.”

Throughout the 80s and 90s, post-punk faded in and out of popularity, but never fully disappeared. Glimpses of its influence can be seen in other more popular genres like grunge or alternative rock. Kurt Cobain, Nirvana’s frontman, revealed The Slits, Wip ers, and Sonic Youth, all post-punk bands of the 70s and 80s, each created some of his favorite albums.

Leading into the 2000s however, the genre saw a brief resurgence in, of all places, mainstream rock radio. The Strokes, The Hives, Interpol, Franz Fer dinand, Arctic Monkeys, etc. all maintained the DIY aesthetic and distorted guitars that post-punk was known for. This resurgence has a name as well: postpunk revival.

Even after existing for over 40 years, exciting new groups are still taking notes from post-punk bands of the past, mainly those over the pond in England. Squid, Black Midi and Black Country, New Road all maintain cult-followings on the independent music circuit whilst also receiving critical acclaim from the music press.

Simple yet creepy crafts

Spooky Season is finally here! The weath er is getting cooler, the leaves are changing and Halloween is just around the cor ner. Halloween is a great holiday, but many people are often faced with the question of what they can do to celebrate once they grow too old to trick-or-treat. One way that adults participate in Halloween is decorating. People can decorate their houses, hall ways and dorm rooms. Here are some spooktacular crafts for anyone to do that all cost less than $5.

Creepy Candles. Get an old water bottle, some acrylic paint, scissors, and a tea light electric candle. Please do not buy a real candle, as it is a fire hazard.

Cut the water bottle at whatever length you would like, but keep in mind that the tea light has to fit inside the bottle. Paint the outside of the bottle with your choice of color, making sure to leave some thicker and thinner lines. Let it dry. Place the candle inside the water bottle and enjoy your new masterpiece!

Web. Collect black yarn, a paper plate, and scissors. Make nine evenly spaced inchlong cuts along the edge of the plate. Thread the black yarn through each of the cuts and

secure the end of the string by tying it to the end of the string attached to the yarn.

Cut off 2-3 arm-lengths of yarn from the rest of the ball, leaving one end still attached to the plate. Find the closest black line that you can see and pull the yarn through, making the circle smaller and smaller until you can see a small knot at the center. (If you would like a more com plex/larger web, add more cuts to the plate.) Leave whatever leftover yarn there is attached.

Spider. Collect yarn, scis sors and one double-sided Q-tip. Make one ball of yarn slightly smaller than the size of your hand.

Make six legs to attach to the large ball of yarn. (Can be more strips of yarn, paper, plastic, wires, pipe cleaners, or whatever you want. I used an old set of headphones, but I do not suggest buying headphones and cut ting them just for this spider.)

Make a second ball of yarn about half the size of the previous one. Cut the ends off of the Q-tip, then glue/tape them to the small ball of yarn.

Make two legs and attach them to the small ball of yarn. Thread the leftover yarn from the web through both sides of the spider.

Disney needs to up the ante

Disney is well known for their amazing adaptations from fairy tales and their modern spin on these age old classics. However, in recent years, they have turned away from adapt ing the original tales and shifting focus to adjusting their own adaptations. Disney should be trying to get back to their roots by adapting some time-honored fairy tales. These are the top five fairy tales, myths, and legends that should be made into Disney animated movies.

1. Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel follows the story of a brother and sister who are left in the woods and happen upon a house made of candy. This house is home to a cannibalistic witch that they must defeat in order to survive the ordeal. This is a popular fairytale, originating in Germany, that has been adapted many times over the years. However, Disney has not yet joined this bandwagon, but could be lucrative if the magic of Disney is ap plied.

2. Baby Yaga

Baba Yaga is a Russian witch who lives in an enchanted cottage, a rickety wooden structure with chicken feet. She lures children into her home and kidnaps them never to be seen from again. This tale is used to keep children from wandering off on their own and getting kidnapped. It is also referenced in the Disney/Marvel movie Ant-Man and the Wasp by the Rus sian hacker, Kurt Goreshter.

3. The White Cat

This tale features three brothers vying for their father’s throne, who gives them impossible tasks to complete, not want ing to give up his throne. The white cat helps to ensnare the throne for the youngest of the brothers and in the end, turns into a princess. This tale is a mix between the original tale of Puss in Boots and Beauty and the Beast. This could be another box-office hit for the Disney Princess franchise.

4. Icarus and Daedalus

The story of Icarus and Daedalus is one of the love between father and son, and as Disney strays from the classical ideals of romantic love this would be a perfect one to adapt. Daeda lus is an inventor that is trapped with his son in a seemingly inescapable Labyrinth of his own making. However, Daedalus makes wings so that he and Icarus can fly out, but Icarus flies too close to the sun and dies. This ending would probably be adjusted by Disney, but would still be a good story to be brought to life.

5. The Marsh King’s Daughter

This story features a beautiful girl named Helga that must save her mother, an Egyptian fairy, from her father, the Marsh King. Helga does not know of her true parentage until she grows up, but knows that she is not normal because she is a kind and good-natured frog by night and a wicked and beauti ful girl by day. This story is Hans Christian Andersen’s sec ond longest piece and was just as popular as The Snow Queen, which Frozen is loosely based on, at one time.

Rampant racism in the NHL is not acceptable

The National Hockey League (NHL) has been running with a motto of “Hockey is for Everyone.” Is it, though?

At times, it really feels as though it isn’t, and that goes for the sport itself, as a whole. I say that as someone who loves hockey and the NHL. It’s absolutely my world. It’s where I want to land upon graduation. However, I refuse to sit idly by as I see more and more issues plaguing the sport, the NHL, and its fanbase.

At its core, hockey is a predominantly white sport. If you were to ask fans to name some players in the league, you’d get big names such as Sidney Crosby, Claude Giroux, and Nathan MacKinnon.

According to NBC News 9 out of Denver, CO, “The National Hockey League currently has 54 active players who are Arab, Asian, Black, Latino, or Indigineous, which would make up about 7% of the league.” In all reality-- I don’t believe a statistic like this is poor. The issue is that the culture surrounding hockey is full of racism.

Two big things happened in the league within the last four months; the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup, and the Flyers signed Tony DeAngelo. The Ava lanche winning the Stanley Cup doesn’t seem like a “big” thing, it really seems quite benign in theory. A team wins the cup every year. However, Na zem Kadri, who is now a center for the Calgary Flames, won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche, making him the first Lebanese and Muslim person to win the Cup.

Nazem Kadri faced an incredible amount of racist both during their Cup run, and after. During game three of round two of the playoffs, Kadri had an accidental collision with the goaltender of the St. Louis Blues, Jor dan Binnington. Binnington was injured during this col lision, and was unable to play during the rest of round two. Prior to game four, Kadri started to receive racist messages and threats via social media platforms, which

led the St. Louis police to have an expanded presence at the game. After winning the Cup, he continued to re ceive these messages.

The racism does not just come from the fans, how ever. It is an internal issue, as well. Tony DeAngelo was a problem child during the 2021-22 season when he was playing for the New York Rangers. DeAngelo had been controversial amongst the fans for a bit at this point, as he used his social media platforms to promote his politi cal views and would engage in arguments with NHL fans about his views and his production on the ice. These is sues extended into the Rangers’ locker room.

Tony DeAngelo’s problematic behavior was first noted in juniors, with USA Today stating, “He was suspended in juniors and the NHL for abuse of officials and also was suspended twice in juniors for violating the Ontario Hockey League’s policy for keeping ‘homophobic, racist and sexist language out of the game.’”

With these situations already on his record, why should we have kept him in the league? It’s not like he’s a star player who is a positive face for the league. It makes no sense. After an altercation with Alexandar Georgiev, the Rangers placed him on waivers, and was not picked up by another team for the rest of the 21-22 season.

In the offseason this year, the Philadelphia Flyers made the bold decision to pick him up, and fans, such as myself were rightfully angry. Why would we allow a player with a history of racism and homophobia to play in the City of Brotherly Love? Why are we giving a play er yet another chance when he has proven that he is toxic to the league, the fans, and his own locker room? The NHL could do so much better by ensuring players like Tony DeAngelo are facing real, true consequences for their bigoted behavior instead of giving them mul tiple “second chances.”

Football falls to Millersville

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Bald Eagles hosted the Millers ville Marauders for a football contest this past Saturday (October 1). Millersville (1-4) jumped out to a 14-0 lead at halftime but a third quarter surge saw Lock Haven (1-4) cut Millersville’s lead to 21-12. Millersville rallied ahead scoring 21 unanswered handing Lock Haven a 42-12 loss.

“I challenged them this week,” Lock Haven head coach Dan Mulrooney said. “Our kids were fired up on the side line the whole game. We’re trying to be in the game in the fourth quarter. I’m so proud of them. And we’re out there playing eight freshmen on defense, and we’re stopping them. We’re get ting off the field, we’re intercepting them. We’re doing some really good things. I know the score doesn’t look like it right now but when it does, it will be magical as I keep telling them.”

Millersville received the ball first and drove deep into Lock Ha ven territory until a fumble halted the drive, giving the Bald Eagles possession of the ball. Both teams were unable to reach the endzone in the first quarter. The Marauders scored twice in the sec ond quarter giving them a 14-0 advantage over Lock Ha ven. Millersville drove the ball to Lock Haven’s 15-yard line on a 25-yard pass play from Robert Footman Jr. to Hakim Melvin. Multiple plays later, Marcus Pierce Jr. rushed for a six-yard touchdown. On their next possession, Footman hit Mekhi Alexander for an 88-yard touchdown to cap off a drive that started at their own one-yard line.

The Bald Eagles scored on their opening possession in the second half when Easton Turner connected with Mar quon Williams for a 48-yard touchdown pass. A missed extra point had Lock Haven trailing 14-6. The Bald Eagles forced a Millersville punt which was downed at their own one-yard

line. The drive ended when Millersville defensive back Gus Ross picked off Turner and returned it to Lock Haven’s twoyard line. On the very next play, Pierce punched it in giv ing Millersville a 21-6 lead with 7:09 remaining in the third quarter.

Lock Haven responded quickly in their next possession, driving down to Millersville’s 21-yard line on a 50-yard pass from Turner to Chase Holmes. The drive was capped off on a 10-yard touchdown catch from Williams, his second of the game. The Bald Eagles closed in on the Marauders 21-12.

“I told my team, go out there (in the second half) and do it,” Mulrooney said. “Go out there and attack. You have the ability to do it. It was 21-12, we were playing back and forth. At that moment, I was really proud be cause they showed experience.”

Millersville scored once more in the third on a one-yard plunge from Jaheim Morris.

The fourth quarter saw only two touchdowns, both by Millersville. Kameron Taylor caught a 17-yard touchdown pass which was set up by a 30-yard run by Morris. Minutes later, Millersville defensive back Omar Ba picked off Turner leading to a one-yard touch down run by Matt Frauen.

PASS CATCHERS… Bald Eagle wide receivers Williams and Holmes led the way for the offense. Williams grabbed two catches for 58-yards and two touchdowns. Holmes re aled in six catches for 111-yards.

UP NEXT… Lock Haven will hit the road to face Shepherd on Saturday, October 8. Kick off is at 12:00 p.m.

“We’re not gonna back down,” Mulrooney noted. “Things may go bad, and we’ll have a smile on our face. We’re ready. We’ll compete against you. I cannot wait to play Shepherd. I’m excited.”

Sports Management Club hits it out of the ballpark, providing in-field opportunities

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Experience and networking are the two primary core values of the Sports Man agement Club at Lock Haven University.

Its main purpose as an academic club, of about 30 members, is to equip students with the knowledge and experience necessary to secure a position and succeed in the sports management and admin istrative industries. This is done largely by help ing club members engage in practical experiential learning opportunities directly related to their career field and interests.

Club secretary Morgan McCutcheon emphasized the importance of needing experience to pursue a sports career post-graduation. She also noted how the Sports Management Club provides students with the chance to help build their resumes and learn how to present themselves professionally within the field.

“Our industry is primarily based on experience. To provide our members with experience at an af fordable cost will help benefit them in the future while searching for jobs. We, as officers, try to help out our members as much as we possibly can and help provide them with the right resources.”

Club members have the opportunity each semes ter to attend one large trip, two to three business conferences and/or resume career workshops, as well as several other small-scale sporting events to gain experience working in the sports industry. In the past, students have worked in various hospital-

ity, transportation, and ticket servicing roles. They also ushered guests, score kept, ball collected, and videographed during games.

While most volunteer experiences are provided through Haven and Penn State Athletics as well as local high school athletic departments, about 15-20 students have the opportunity to attend a largescale sporting event each semester.

Some of the most recent trips included work ing at the NCAA College Football Championships, Little League World Series, and various Super Bowl games. All trips are paid for through personal and club-wide funding.

“Working at the Little League MLB Classic was a great resume building experience. I really en joyed working with the different teams and learn ing about various game day operations within the Little League organization,” said club treasurer Hannah Possinger.

Upperclassmen can also earn service hours to go toward their required three-credit field participation class by actively participating in the club. Most Sports Management majors complete their 120 hours by working at different sporting events promoted through the club.

Another critical aspect of the Sports Management Club is networking. Many members, includ ing the current president and vice president, obtained sports-related jobs and internships through their extracurricular involvement in the club.

President Hailey Farr commented on how net working is one of her favorite parts about being a member of the Sports Management Club.

“Because of the opportunities provided by the club I have been fortunate enough to attend two NCAA College Football National Championships and go on various other small trips that have allowed me to create industry connections. I have also benefited professionally from the major and our alumni through networking and was able to get a part time job from a LinkedIn post one of our alumni shared.”

Vice president Ethan Walker also made profes sional connections by serving as an active member. After networking and attending several trips associated with the club, he became affiliated with QuintEvents, a global sport and event planning company. Ethan is now employed through the or ganization and assists other members in attending big-name sporting events.

He also attributes the club’s experiential learning opportunities as his main reason for attending Lock Haven University. “I really like offering so many opportunities to students so they can sepa rate themselves from the rest of the industry after they leave LHU. That’s honestly why I chose Lock Haven. The things this club does for its members are unlike many others.”

Anyone interested in joining Sports Manage ment Club and applying their classroom skills out in the real world can do so by contacting Hailey Farr at hmf7625@lockhaven.edu or advisor Peter Campbell at pcampbel@lockhaven.edu. Meetings are hosted every other Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Zim merli Room 7. Also, be sure to connect with the club on Instagram @lhu.smc and Twitter @LHU_ SMC.
