First ever all civilian space flight deemed a success Levi Deitz Copy Editor lwd6487@lockhaven.edu

A four person crew made up of civilians has returned home from a three day trip to Earth’s atmosphere. This was the first time in history that an entire crew of non-astronauts flew to space and back. The spacecraft that the group was in was launched by SpaceX, Elon Musk’s company dedicated to space exploration. The crew was led by billionaire Jared Isaacman, the CEO of a payment processing company called Shift4 Payments Inc.. Before the launch Isaacman told NBC, “From the start of this mission, I’ve been very aware of how fortunate we are to be part of this history SpaceX is creating right now.” Joining Isaacman were Hayley Arcenaux, a physician at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Chris Sembroski, an Air Force veteran and aerospace data engineer, and Sian Proctor, a geoscientist and licensed pilot. SpaceX’s mission, titled Inspiration4, made history as the farthest spaceflight containing civilians. The spacecraft traveled 367 miles above Earth’s surface, which is even farther than the International Space Station, which orbits the Earth at around 240 miles. According to CNN, the ship they were in, the Crew Dragon, was described by NASA as the “safest crewed vehicle ever flown.” The crew

launched on Sept. 15 and returned to Earth on Sept. 18. They orbited Earth for three days before returning. The descent of the crew was live-streamed, and according to CNN, “The crew were shown watching movies, and occasionally heard responding to SpaceX’s mission control inside their fully autonomous spacecraft.” Benji Reed, SpaceX’s director of crew mission management told CNN that there were a few issues from a technical standpoint, but that they “were worked out.” The issues involved a waste management fan. Even Musk himself commented that the next space-tourist flights would have “upgraded toilets.” According to Insider, Musk also stated that the next flight would have a small oven for heating food, and WiFi, provided by SpaceX’s satellite-internet project, Starlight. This is only the most recent of a slew of space trips taken this year. Jeff Bezos, former CEO of Amazon, had a highly publicized trip to space back in July. Currently these types of space vacations are only available to the extremely wealthy, but SpaceX has at least five other trips planned. Maybe one day going on a vacation to space will be as simple as going to the beach.

Nicki Minaj Refuses COVID-19 Vaccine Alex Ross amr1884@lockhaven.edu A&E Editor American rapper and pop star Nicki Minaj has recently discussed her feelings on the Covid-19 vaccination on Twitter, but not in the way anyone expected. Minaj tweeted out that she would not be going to the Met Gala due to the Covid-19 vaccine being required for all of those who attended. She did not want to get the vaccine yet due to not fully researching and understanding the science behind Covid-19. Minaj tweeted, “They want you to get vaccinated for the Met. if I get vaccinated it won’t for the Met. It’ll be once I feel I’ve done enough research. I’m working on that now.” It has not been uncommon for celebrities to voice their concerns and uncertainties with Covid-19 vaccines and why they will not be getting it. However, Minaj’s second reason as to not getting vaccinated was baffling to many: because of a cousin’s friend becoming impotent due to swollen testicles before a wedding. “My cousin in Trinidad won’t get the vaccine cuz his friend got it & became impotent. His testicles became swollen” Minaj tweets. “His friend was weeks away from getting married, now

the girl called off the wedding.” This tweet became an immediate topic of discussion, as there were nearly no other claims of swollen testicles being a side effect of Covid-19. Thousands of Twitter users retweeted and replied with their opinions. Some were supportive of her decision, while others were not. Most were still trying to understand if her tweet was a joke. This caught the attention of the media fast and everyone latched onto the story. The attention eventually caught up to the Health Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Terrence Deyalsingh. CNN cites that he criticized Minaj’s tweets as “false” and a waste of everyone’s time. Dr. Anthony Fauci even caught wind of the whole affair and gave his opinion. In a CBS News article, Fauci says the vaccine causes no reproductive issues and there is no evidence to support such a claim. In the end, Minaj says she will eventually get the vaccine as she wishes to tour again soon.

Life Is Strange TV Show Coming Soon Kristen Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor A Life is Strange television show is in the works as we speak, with Shawn Mendes in charge of the music for the series and acting as an executive producer for the show. The news of this show broke out in 2016 from Legendary Digital Studios and Square Enix. According to Deadline in 2017, the rights to the series were sold to Hulu. The show will be an adaptation of the Life is Strange video games. Since the news of the show there have been some new games in the series that have come out, like Life is Strange: Before the Storm, Life is Strange 2 and Life is Strange: True Colors. Square Enix was planning to release Life is Strange and Life is Strange: Before the Storm as remastered versions on September 30, 2021, but decided to push back the release date to 2022 due to the Coronavirus. Life is Strange is about high schooler Max Caulfield, who discovers that she has the power to rewind time and travel to a different time by focusing on pictures. Each title in the series fea-

tures a butterfly effect narrative, wherein whatever choice the player makes has an impact later on in the game. Life is Strange 2 is about two brothers, Sean and Daniel Diaz, who go on a journey to Puerto Lobos, Mexico after an accident in Seattle, Washington that results in the deaths of a police officer and their father. Daniel discovers that he has the power of telekinesis and his older brother, Sean, has to teach him how to use his powers for good. Life is Strange: Before the Storm is about a girl named Chloe Price helping her friend Rachel Amber discover her father’s secret. The truth may cause some heartache. The new release Life is Strange: True Colors is about Alex Chen, who goes to New Haven, Colorado to live with her brother, Gabe. Not long after she arrives in New Haven, an accident occurs that results in her brother dying. Alex goes on a mission to find out what happened to him that night, and the truth that she finds is more than what she anticipated.

“Oddball” Playlist Tess English tae7002@lockhaven.edu Managing Editor This week we’re bringing you music that’ll spice up your daily mix for sure. This week’s theme is oddball music. These offbeat tunes will have you rocking out with your socks on the hardwood floor during late nights.

“I Didn’t Know The Gun Was Loaded” by Patsy Montana - This catchy 1949 track tells a story of a woman who uses the sexist double standards to her advantage.

“Rasputin” by Boney M - A ballad about one of the most notorious Russian men in recent history. The song is based on a true story. We dare you not to turn up to this song.

“Will You Lay With Me” by Tanya Tucker - This song is about grave relationship commitment. Quite literally. Give it listen to see what your #RelationshipGoals could be.

“Ocean Man” by Ween - This experimental tune is actually the inspiration for the hit series “Spongebob SquarePants”. Good for laidback and beachy vibes.

“Mechanical Girl” by Aurelio Voltaire - This heartfelt song about a man and his daughter who embody steampunk vibes.

“King of Spain” by Moxy Früvous - This song is a straight banger about a royal who takes a shortfall from grace. It’s a nice starter song to ease into the weirdness.

Honorable Mentions: Songs that are good, but unfortunately the list can only be so long: “Particle Man” by They Might Be Giants is an easygoing bop that is a little more than experimental. “Mount St. Helens is about to Blow Up” by Bill Wurtz is a chill song for a pretty hot topic (badum tss). “You Remind Me Of A Hustle” by Professor Elemental is something you really have to just listen to experience.

“Trapped in the Drive-Thru” by Weird Al Yankovic How can we talk oddball music without paying our respects to Weird Al, the father of modern parody music? “Trapped in the Drive-Thru” will be all too relatable now that a lot of restaurants have their lobbies closed.

“I Don’t Want to Go to Toronto” by the Vestibules We’re pretty sure this is what every Quebcian sounds like when they complain about Toronto. The outlandish and increasingly ridiculous complaints will bring a smile to any satire lover’s face. “It’s Hard To Humble” by Mac Davis - A good country tune that will help boost even the lowest of esteem. “What’s Gonna Happen” by Santino Fontana, Sarah Stiles - This one is for music lovers. Straight outta the Tootsie soundtrack. This is for anyone with anxiety, and it hits every time.

How to get cozy in the dorms Tess English Managing Editor tae7002@lockhaven.edu If you’ve ever walked into an empty dorm, you know the room needs a little effort in decor in order for it to feel homier. Unless you enjoy a radically minimalist look then the bare white brick wall and the chill of white tile may be enough for you. In which case, you do you. For everyone else who is feeling a little homesick or struggling to make their dorm a home away from home here a few tips and tricks to spice up your dorm. Rugs. This may sound silly, but it’s actually true! Rugs are one of a few chances to add a splash of color into your room. Plus they can bring a certain soft comfort if you’re used to having carpet. Bonus perk: if you drop something on your carpet it’s less likely to break. Lights. Having multiple sources of lights allow you to control the level of brightness in your room at a given time. This gives a better sense of control of the room. Plus fairy lights are mad cute! Also, you can sting of lights that change color to suit anything from your mood, holiday, or just make it a little something you have to flex on your friends with! A minifridge. While this is a bit of an expensive purchase it’s worth the investment. Being able to store snacks, drinks, and meals alike in the room provides a level of comfort. Feeling like you have to settle for vending machine snack or book it Bentley in order to eat is such a hassle. Whereas in any good home comfort is never more than at reach of your fingertips. Throw pillows. Everyone needs good bedding, that should go without saying. But, even bedding can benefit a little facelift by using throw pillows. These bad boys are a great way to accent the color/theme aesthetic of your room. Besides, can you really ever have too many pillows?

Must Watch Halloween Movies Kasidee Wozniak Online Editor kbw191@lockhaven.edu Spooky season is just around the corner. One way of easing into the season of fall is through watching Halloween movies while eating snacks with pals. If you want to binge-watch Halloween movies, I narrowed your list to five movies in which I deem worthy of your time. Bride of Chucky (1998)- Hands down one of my favorite movies of all time. This movie is about Chucky reconnecting with his former lover, Tiffany, as they try to transfer his soul from a doll to a human body. Of course, they cause mischief throughout their journey. If you are a lover of both comedy, romance, and horror you will love this movie. Deathgasm (2015)- The name itself screams scary, which is a perfect watch to prepare yourself for the Halloween thrills. Another thing great about this is that it involves a zombie apocalypse… because why not. This movie is about what happens when a bunch of teenage outcasts form a metal band named “Deathgasm” get a hold of demonic papers. You’ll just have to watch the movie to see what happens next. Beetlejuice (1988)- If you have never seen this movie, you must be living under a rock. This is a great movie to understand why you shouldn’t mess with the dead. If you do mess with the dead, you might run into Beetlejuice. The movie is about a family moving into a house haunted by a couple who befriend their outcast daughter. The parents start to disrespect the ghosts which leads them to contacting Beetlejuice for additional support. This is an iconic movie and I recommend everyone watch this wonderful creation by Tim Burton. Halloween (2007)- Rob Zombie never disappoints with his rendition on loved characters. This movie centers around the childhood of Michael Myers to understand his upbringing and why he went on his killing sprees. I appreciate the movie for mentioning mental health and how it can truly affect a person as they become adults. As any other movie of the series, it is gory, bloody, unearthly, inhumane and eerie.

The Craft (1996)- If you are interested in witchcraft, you will love this movie. My friends and I love to watch this movie on Halloween as we sort out candy. This movie is about a bunch of teenage girls who are witches that get individual powers as they grow stronger together as friends. Another good aspect is the style of each character it screams 90s which is another reason why I love this movie.

Optimal Student Wellness: A Word on Sleep Ian McGregor Staff Writer tm9315@lockhaven.edu

Sleep is a key ingredient to getting better grades, an improved mood, more energy, better focus, and what’s more, most people enjoy sleep...so why then, do most of us not get enough of it? Researchers at the University of Michigan have identified sleep as one of the strongest predictors of student academic success. The CDC reports that those who are sleep-deprived have a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, behavioral issues, attention problems, physical injuries, and poor mental health. The Division of Student Affairs at Texas A&M reports that proper sleep quantity, quality, and regularity will strengthen our immune system, restore our energy, and improve mood and memory. Getting more sleep is not a hard sell...most of us are on-board with this concept. Yet despite this, we still struggle to get the sleep we need. So what can we do about it? Check out the recommendations below for a few pro-tips. • Consistency: Establish regular times for going to bed and waking up, even on days off and weekends. Try not to vary these times by more than 2 hours. Large variances in sleep patterns can be as detrimental as not getting enough sleep. • Before Bed: Try to avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, napping, eating, excessive drinking, and exercise close to your scheduled bed time. These substances and activities will negatively affect your sleep quality and duration. If you’re a coffee drinker, schedule a caffeine “cut-off time” in the afternoon (6 hours before bed is recommended).

• Environment: Create a sleep-friendly environment by using dark curtains, fans and white noise machines, eye masks, and comfortable bedding. Avoid having phones, computers, and screens in your room and only use your bedroom for sleeping. When we use our bed for work and school, our brain associates that area with working instead of sleeping. • End-Of-Day Ritual: Create a routine for windingdown at the end of the day. This will signal the brain and body that it’s time to relax, and mentally prepare us for a good night’s rest. Consider listening to soothing music, reading a book, meditation, or a warm bath. • Priorities: Instead of squeezing sleep into the margins of your busy days, try making sleep a priority. Many studies report most adults need between 7-9 hours of continuous sleep per night. Figure out how many hours your body needs, and plan your day around this. Consider starting your bedtime ritual earlier to accommodate the sleep you require.

This list is by no means exhaustive, but it should help you obtain better sleep practices.

DiSomma, Ruiz de Eguilaz sweep PSAC Men’s Soccer awards after upset-win Adam Kaylor Ank4635@lockhaven.edu Communications Assistant

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Andrea DiSomma (Lancaster, Pa./ Manheim Twp.) and Aitor Ruiz de Eguilaz (Euskadi, Spain/Koldo Mitxelena (Robert Morris)) of the Lock Haven University men’s soccer team were named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Athlete and Defensive Athlete of the Week. The Bald Eagles posted a huge 2-0 shutout-win over No. 12 Millersville on a rainy Wednesday (Sept. 15) night last week. Powered by DiSomma and Ruiz de Eguilaz, LHU captured its first win over a ranked opponent since 2017 and opened up PSAC East play 1-0. The 2019 All-American DiSomma put the Bald Eagles on the board early after heading home a sensational corner kick for LHU’s eventual game-winning score. He kept the pressure on the nationally-ranked Millersville contingent for the rest of the match, firing off five shots. Creating chance-after-chance for the Bald Eagles, DiSomma kept the Marauders off-balance, and helped Lock Haven maintain steady control of the ball.

Goalkeeper Ruiz de Eguilaz was huge between the posts on Wednesday’s stormy night and posted an electric clean sheet against the potent Millersville attack. Ruiz de Eguilaz recorded five saves, including two massive saves late in the second half, in his shutout effort and the Bald Eagle keeper kept the nationally-ranked Marauders scoreless. The Bald Eagles get back into action on Wednesday, September 22 when The Haven travels to Slippery Rock for an East-West crossover match. Kickoff for the match is set for 4 p.m.
