LHU remembers lives lost in 9/11 20th anniversary ceremony Cassandra Keller cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Managing Editor
The Student Veterans Alliance (SVA) hosted a ceremony to remember the lives lost in the 9/11 terrorist attack. Before the ceremony, SVA planted 2,996 flags in the university commons in remembrance of the 2,996 victims. Jasmin Palma, an LHU health science major, said “It’s important for everyone to know what happened before and to know that there are families who lost someone.” After the national anthem was sung, student members of the SVA retold events of the attack as well as naming several of the victims on Flight 93. The ceremony ended with a moment of silence for the victims. Over 50 students, faculty, and staff attended the ceremony. Stephanie Weaver, the SVA advisor, said, “We don’t need a big ceremony to remember it[the 9/11 attack]. It’s really just about the people who lost their lives.” (Photos taken by Cassandra Keller)

U.S. Justice Department sues Texas over abortion ban Levi Deitz lwd6487@lockhaven.edu Copy Editor
On Sept. 9, the U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit against the state of Texas over the recent ban on abortions after six weeks. Back in May, the state passed the Texas Heartbeat Act, which bans abortions as soon as a heartbeat in a fetus can be detected, which is typically six weeks after conception. The Heartbeat Act also states that anyone, regardless of their connection to the situation, can sue anyone who induces or performs the abortion in violation of the statute. It further prevents state officials from enforcing the law, according to the New York Times, with it instead relying on private parties to sue people suspected of violating the statute. Anyone that is successfully sued will be liable for a minimum of $10,000 plus court costs. The act was challenged by courts, but no hearings took place before the act went into effect on September 1. The preliminary statement of the lawsuit cites past cases Planned Parenthood v. Casey and Roe v. Wade as reasons that the ban is unlawful. Attorney General Merrick Garland told NPR that the precedents set by these cases hold, and that “regardless of whether exceptions are made for particular circumstances, a state may not prevent any woman from making the ultimate decision to
terminate her pregnancy before viability.” Roe v. Wade was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court that asserted that the Constitution protects women’s rights to receive an abortion, and Planned Parenthood v. Casey upheld the court’s previous decision, setting a precedent for future cases. The Justice Department accuses Texas of being in direct violation of the Constitution because the abortion ban prohibits any effort to help women in need of an abortion, even in cases of rape, incest, or sexual abuse. On the day the Texas Heartbeat Act went into effect, over a dozen women showed up to protest outside of the Dallas City Hall. They were dressed in costumes from The Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopian novel in which women are forced to produce children for the ruling class of men. Many politicians spoke out against the act, including President Joe Biden, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Texas Congressional Candidate Jessica Cisneros. In an interview for MSNBC, Warren called for Roe v. Wade to be codified into law Biden described the bill as “extreme” and that it “Blatantly defied the constitution right established under Roe v. Wade. Cisneros wrote in an article for Teen Vogue, “When laws that push access to reproductive health care out of reach take effect, it’s always women of color and low-income communities that are most harmed.”

Where’s that one from?
“Daria” (1997-2001) TV Show Review
Movie Quote: “What’s the most you ever lost in a coin toss?” Last week’s movie: “The Godfather” (1972)
Kassidee Wozniak kbw191@lockhaven.edu Online Editor Back when MTV used to air shows in the late 90s, one character from the show Beavis and Butthead got their own spinoff show. Her name’s Daria, who was nicknamed “Diarrhea”. The show first aired March 3rd, 1997. Lasting from 1997 to 2001, it represented all four years of high school. The goal of the show was to portray high school in the perspective of Daria Morgendorffer who is a very sarcastic and deadpan teenage girl. The series starts with her immediate family moving to the suburban town Lawndale. Her immediate family includes her workaholic mom Helen, clueless bipolar dad Jake, and the stereotypical popular younger sister Quinn. Quinn and Daria are huge contrasts in their social aspect and Quinn tries to act like she doesn’t exist whenever they’re both at school. Daria is deemed the weird girl at school and Quinn is easily liked. On the first day of school Quinn becomes the vice president of the fashion club. When purposely failing her
psychological exam, Daria must take a self-esteem class in which she meets her best friend, Jane Lane. Lane is an open-minded, sarcastic, artist who is more outgoing compared to introverted Daria. After they meet, they are hardly seen apart in the series. In her family life there is less structure compared to the Morgendorffers’. Members of the Lane family have no rules and more of everyone takes care of themselves, Jane’s parents are barely seen in the show. Her older brother, Trent Lane, is an aspiring musician in the band Mystik Spiral. Daria develops a crush on him, and Jane constantly teases her because he brings out a different side of Daria…full of emotion. The show was targeted towards females. The theme song was inspired by the 90s era of girl punk bands, titled “You’re Standing On My Neck” by the band Splendora. Daria is perceived as a loner in this sick sad world. Viewers who always felt like an outsider in their high school will enjoy the show’s criticism of 90’s pop culture.

Ryan Reynolds’ “Green Lantern” surges in popularity thanks to Netflix Kerri Hoover kah4338@lochaven.edu News Editor After becoming a box office flop during its debut in 2011, the D.C. Comics film “Green Lantern,” starring Ryan Reynolds, is now gaining popularity on Netflix. The #1 streaming service recently added Reynolds’ “Green Lantern” to its database of entertainment on Sept. 1. Within 24 hours, the film earned a #4 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 list. Even into the weekend “Green Lantern” remained on Netflix’s Top 10 list, ranking #6 for the most watched films and television shows. The rising popularity of the film came as a real surprise to critics. When the movie debuted in June 2011, it resulted in a box office flop. On a $200 million budget, “Green Lantern” only raked in $220 million in the box office a sour $20 million profit, not including marketing costs, according to Screen Rant. While a $20 million profit might sound good to the average person, Reynold’s film had a pretty poor return on investment when compared to the other superhero movies that were
released in the same year. For instance, Marvel Studios’ “Thor” debuted in 2011 with a budget of $150 million and received a whopping $449 million in the box office, a near $300 million profit. In addition to low sales, “Green Lantern” had poor ratings, receiving 26% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. According to Screen Rant, the main critiques of the movie were the use of “terrible” CGI, a “wasted” cast, and a poor plot, which involved the main character choosing “the wrong villain” to fight. Reynolds himself has even openly admitted to how much of a failure his “Green Lantern” movie was. However, he has not yet commented on the film’s success and popularity since its addition to Netflix. Despite its initial failure, “Green Lantern” appears to have a bright future ahead thanks to Netflix. It is yet to be said why the film is growing in popularity; however, it might be due to Reynold’s increased popularity as an actor after his appearances in “Deadpool” and “Deadpool 2.” I mean who doesn’t love Ryan Reynolds!

These are songs to get you through the week when you need an extra boost of encouragement. They should brighten up your day and help hype you up for whatever tasks you need to get through. I hope this playlist comes in handy for whatever the week throws at you! 1. “Truth Hurts” by Lizzo - This song’s message is to never forget to love yourself no matter what situation you are in. Especially if you are going through a break-up, Lizzo reminds you that heartbreak shouldn’t keep you from being a baddie. 2. “(You Gotta) Fight for your Right (To Party)” by Beastie Boys – This song is connected to rebellion. Everyone has been there when questioning authority and the nagging of their parents and you just want a break. This song is perfect for screaming in your car type of days. 3. “Roar” by Katy Perry – If you are searching for empowerment this song was made for you. In this song, Perry is raving about how she found her individuality and is confident. The song’s message is that you only need to depend on yourself to be happy in life.
4. “I Don’t F*ck with You” by Big SeanThe title of the song says it all. This is a great song for when someone has pushed you to your limits and you’re done with their idiocy. Listening to this song will put you in the mood to flip someone off and carry on with your day. 5. “Keep Holding on” by Avril Lavigne – One of the sappier songs of the playlist. This song acknowledges that life can be hard and lonely sometimes. Remembering that people are there for you no matter what hardship you are facing is the message of the song. 6. “Pocketful of Sunshine” by Natasha Bedingfield- The title of this song means hope. Bedingfield wanted the song to be a reminder that nothing should stand between someone’s overall happiness. The song is very catchy, and listeners will soon convince themselves that they too have a pocketful of sunshine!

Horoscopes Aries(March 21-April19) You’ll be happiest away from prying eyes today, Aries. You’re not in the mood to be friendly or participate in idle gossip. It seems you’ve been having the same conversations with the same people for some time now. You’re feeling so bored you could scream. To avoid doing just that, spend quiet time alone today if you can. Taurus(April 20-May 20) Just when you thought things were settled, life takes another turn. Today brings yet another of those turns, so hold on, Taurus. You may receive some information that has a dramatic impact on your life. Perhaps you’ll receive an opportunity to move to another state or country. Perhaps you’ll decide to get married. Gemini (May 21-June 20) You should feel optimistic today, Gemini, with confidence in your ability to accomplish anything you set your mind to. If you’re working toward a specific goal (and you should be), something is likely to happen today that propels you that much closer to realizing your goal. Cancer(June 21-July 22) You can expect some big changes, Cancer. All the hard work you’ve been doing to develop your confidence is showing, and this is attracting opportunities like bees to honey. On top of this, your passion is high right now, so set aside private time with your mate. Leo(July 23-Aug 22) Don’t overreact today, Leo. Your biorhythms are low. In fact, you may be feeling a bit under the weather. There’s no point in trying to keep up a cheerful front. People will see through your facade. You would be better served by spending time on solo activities. That way you can spend long stretches of time in bed, where you’re meant to be today. Virgo(August 23- September 22) A long-term project reaches a positive conclusion, one that may have a dramatic impact on your finances. You’ve sold your manuscript to a publisher or successfully concluded a project that’s dear to your heart. This success should give you the confidence you need. Libra(September 23-October 22) Change is good, but it can be scary when it comes suddenly. That’s what you feel today when someone announces a major change without warning. You’re not sure how to react to the news and haven’t a clue how it affects you. All you can do now is wait. Try not to panic. In the end, you’ll see that these changes will benefit everyone, including you!
Scorpio(October 23- November 21) You’re eager for information on a particular subject and will go to great lengths to get it, Scorpio. Before heading off to the library, why not try an online search? You might find everything you need without leaving your chair. But your search might necessitate going to the primary source, so travel will be involved. Sagittarius(November 22-December 21) You may receive a windfall from an unexpected source, Sagittarius. Perhaps an uncle died and remembered you in his will or an old legal settlement has finally come through. Whatever the source, the extra income is welcome now. Your vivid dreams of late may not seem related to this financial upswing, but they’re connected. Capricorn(December 22-January 19) You receive some new insight about an important person in your life, Capricorn, and your relationship takes a dramatic turn for the better. You feel you now know this person completely, and your closeness borders on the profound. This new alliance could also have positive repercussions on your finances. Aquarius(January 20- Februay 18) When the thought of going to work makes it hard to get out of bed, know that the time has come to get another job, Aquarius. Alas, that’s probably not something you can do now. You can be extra kind to yourself. Give yourself a present. Find something you thoroughly enjoy that would perk up your spirits and cost little. Pisces(Februay 19- March 20) Romance is in the air and you must be breathing a lot of it today, Pisces. Your blood is boiling, your passion surging, and a romantic dinner for two is in the cards. You’ll be inclined to shop for clothes, but curb your appetite for material goods. What you really want doesn’t come in a box, so why waste your money?

Top 5 must know Google search tips and tricks Kerri Hoover News Editor kah4338@lockhaven.edu Google is a life-saver for students when it comes to homework assignments and research projects. While it is an extremely helpful tool, it can become a hassle to find search results quickly, efficiently, and accurately. Often Google generates more results than necessary, if it generates the right results at all. In order to help you generate search engine results that you actually need, here is a list of the top five Google search tips and tricks, as deemed by the Eagle Eye staff. These are guaranteed to provide you with more efficient and accurate Google results. 1. Use a hyphen to exclude words - Have you ever searched for something on Google and it has more than one meaning, so you receive results that aren’t related to your search? So has everyone else! Next time you search a topic with an ambiguous meaning, use the hyphen to exclude certain words and help narrow down your search. For example, if you’re searching for the Shanghai restaurant in Lock Haven, try typing into the search engine Shanghai -city to produce results only related to the restaurant and not the Chinese city. 2. Use the word “nearby” for local searches - Google is a broad search engine, which means it is not always going to produce local search results, especially if you don’t have your location turned on. If you’re looking for any place or event that is local (i.e., restaurants, shopping centers, beauty parlors, etc.) add the word “nearby” to the end of your search to help narrow down your results. 3. Use minimal, but important words only - The longer your Google search is the more results you’ll receive - and this isn’t always a good thing. With more words for Google to pick up on, there is a higher chance to receive unrelated results to your search. To improve search accuracy and efficiency, minimize the amount of words down to the most important ones when typing out your search topic. Instead of searching “how to dress for a job interview,” try “job interview attire” or “job interview outfits.”
4. Use quotes - Oftentimes when you search for a topic, Google will separate the search based on each word provided. Google doesn’t always recognize that the typed words are supposed to form a phrase. For your next search, be sure to insert quotation marks around the words so Google knows to search them as a phrase rather than individually. This should help minimize your search results as well as help improve the accuracy of your findings. 5. Use asterisks - You may not always know every word you need to complete your search. In this case, use asterisks in your searches when you are unsure of a word. Google will recognize the asterisk as a placeholder and fill in the missing gaps automatically with different words. This trick is especially great for finding song lyrics and discovering Quizlet question reviews for homework assignments.

Jared the Joker Kassidee Wozniak Kbw191@lockhaven.edu Online Editor
There has been a total of five actors who’ve played The Joker in live-action movies. One of those actors include Jared Leto. Jared Leto played this character in the movie Suicide Squad. In this movie, Joker was used to showcase the history and life of one of the protagonists in the movie, Harley Quinn. When trying to rescue Quinn from her death sentence, he caused stress for the rest of the characters as his character is known for. He was never one of the main characters of the movie nor was he intended to be. Leto’s screentime was seven minutes out of the two hours and 12 minute movie. A lot of his scenes were cut out of the movie. So, when comparing the other actors who have also played the Joker considering the screentime each actor had been crucial in determining how well they were perceived. I disagree with the amount of criticism that Jared Leto got for his performance in the movie Suicide Squad. His goal was to create a “new” Joker that has never been portrayed before keeping similar traits such as strategic, unremorseful, obsessive and heartless. Leto never broke character on set, he treated everyone on set how Joker would. It was his way of connecting to his role by playing numerous pranks on other cast members. Which is something I applaud him for doing. One of those pranks included sending Will Smith who played Deadshot in the movie a box of bullets. Essentially to mock the character he was playing because he’s known for only using one bullet to take out his opponents. It was his way of making sure all the cast members were terrified of him like they would be of The Joker.
Jared Leto’s version of The Joker allowed viewers to see this famously beloved villain in a new way. His vibe was more gang leader with a bunch of tattoos, the iconic green hair, muscular frame, white skinned, purple snake skinned trench coat, and gold chains. Which is completely different aesthetically from Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of The Joker. Viewers should embrace different takes on the beloved villain which is why I think Jared Leto did a great job as the Joker.

Starbucks Fall drinks Kristin Turner Kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor
Every fall, Starbucks does the pumpkin spice latte to get their customers into the season of Fall. I have never tried one before, but I would be open to trying it. I usually get a hot chocolate when the air starts getting colder outside. Starbucks has come out with an apple crisp macchiato both iced and hot and a pumpkin cream cold brew. For halloween, they have done a witches brew drink and will be doing a drink from the movie “Nightmare Before Christmas.” Here is a list of drinks at Starbucks, whether or not I have had them and how I would rate them from 1 to 10 if I have had the drink: 1. Pumpkin Spice Latte-I do not know about this one, but I am open to trying it once the weather gets a little cooler. 2. Witches Brew-I would give this drink a 2 because when I first had it, I thought it was good, but when I got it the second time around it was different than the first time. 3. Apple Crisp Macchiato-It is still relatively new and I am open to trying out the new drink, but it sounds really good. 4. Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccino-I would give this a 10 because it tastes more like a milkshake than a Frappuchino. 5. Vanilla Bean Frappuchino-I have never had this one but it is one of the popular drinks at Starbucks. I am open to trying this one because I love vanilla. 6. Mango Dragonfruit Refresher-I would give this drink a 10 because it is sweet with a tang and perfect if it is hot outside. 7. Hot chocolate-This one deserves a 10 because I do enjoy a classic hot drink when it gets cold outside. 8. Earl Grey Tea-I love earl grey tea, but I have never had it from starbucks before. I would give this tea a 10 because this is an Italian tea and I love staying to my part Italian roots.
This is the list of some of the drinks from starbucks that I either have tried and ranked or ones that I have not tried yet and am open to trying for the fall season coming up.

Men’s Soccer pulls upset, stuns #12 Millersville 2-0 Adam Kaylor Athletic Communications Assistant ank4635@lockhaven.edu
The Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (21-1, 1-0 PSAC East) stunned Millersville University (4-1, 0-1 PSAC East), 2-0, in a shocking Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division upset on a stormy south-central Pennsylvania night. The Bald Eagles got off to a f lying start as their sensational forward Andrea DiSomma (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) headed home a corner kick from Beckham Sibiski (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown H.S.) just five minutes into the opening half. The junior’s teamhigh second goal on the season gave LHU the 1-0 lead which held until a first half lighting delay. Following the resumption of play, LHU held on to their slender 1-0 advantage into the halftime break In the second half, the Marauders began to press for the equalizing goal as the minutes began to wane. The Bald Eagle defense was able to hold strong as Aitor Ruiz de Eguilaz (Euskadi, Spain/Koldo Mitxelena (Robert Morris)) made five saves and The Haven defense locked down the No. 12 Millersville attack.
Eagles toppled No. 22 West Virginia Wesleyan, just days after beating Millersville, who was then ranked No. 9.
In the 70th minute, Austin Kravetz (Altoona, Pa./ Altoona) gave LHU an all-important insurance goal after receiving a cross-field assist from Colton Swanson (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) and cutting inside on his right foot to smash a ball past the goalkeeper at the near post. Just minutes later the game was forced into yet another weather delay and this time play was unable to resume and the Bald Eagles came away with the monumental 2-0 victory. Tonight’s win marked LHU’s first win over a ranked team since the 2017 season when the Bald
Senior Chase Tackett (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) headed up a Haven defensive effort which stymied a Marauder attack that had scored ten goals in their opening four matches.

Former track & field standout named new assistant coach Christopher Valdez Graduate Assistant cbv225@lockhaven.edu
Marcus Disbrow, a former standout-thrower for the Lock Haven University track & field program has been named the Bald Eagles new assistant coach for the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams. Disbrow will focus on coaching throwers as he looks to strengthen the program in the throwing events and continue The Haven’s winning traditions. Disbrow’s time in Lock Haven was marvelous and he was a top thrower right from the start. “Marcus was a valuable member of our teams as a student-athlete, and he had an immediate impact on our squads in the few weeks he assisted with the teams last spring,” said LHU head coach Aaron Russell. “His passion about the throws is contagious, and we’re fortunate to have him join our staff. He is a true student of the sport, and an amazing teacher. I’m confident he’ll be a great mentor to our throwing contingent, and I know the student-athletes are amped to have him back with us this fall.” As the 2020 season rolled around, Disbrow came in as a volunteer coach and made an immediate impact on the throwers. He helped
three throwers qualify for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Outdoor (PSAC) Track & Field Championships. Megan Manglaviti improved dramatically, as she placed sixth the hammer throw. As a student-athlete Disbrow finished his senior year 25th in the nation in the Hammer throw. He finished his career second alltime in the hammer throw at LHU, as well as fourth all-time in the Discus throw. “I’m extremely blessed for the opportunity to be coaching at Lock Haven University,” said Disbrow. “The reason I chose to get into coaching to help inspire athletes to go out there and chase their dreams not only in athletics, but outside of athletics as well. “I’m excited for the great group of young men and women we have on the team and can’t wait to see what all they accomplish this coming season. I want to say thank you to everyone who has helped me get to this point in life especially my grandfather and my former coach (coach Heather Leverington).”
