3 News September 25, 2020 LHU receives research grant to study environmental contaminants
Lock Haven University is one of three schools sharing a $1.43 million research grant to study per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), an emerging contaminant of concern in Pennsylvania waterways. The project is funded through the Department of Defense Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP). In conjunction with researchers at Temple University and Drexel University, Lock Haven University Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences Dr. Daniel Spooner will team up with LHU students to evaluate and test mechanisms that might explain how PFAS move through the food web of aquatic ecosystems. PFAS are a group of human-made chemicals that do not occur naturally but are now found ubiquitously in the environment. They have unique chemical properties, and historically have been used as water repellents, fire suppressants, and non-stick coatings for common household items. PFAS are persistent in the environment, degrade slowly, and yet very little is known about how such compounds move through an ecosystem. The project will run from fall 2020 until the summer of 2022. For Spooner’s portion of the study, Lock Haven University is receiving approximately $131,000. Spooner envisions a handful of LHU students — potentially up to six — to be paid for their role in the research. Over the course of the two-year project, LHU students will have the opportunity to conduct research on an array of topics related to contaminant biology and the assessment of stream ecosystem health. Data from this project will inform managers on the com-
plex behavior of PFAS, and facilitate the development of potential environmental mitigation strategies. “This grant will provide exciting research opportunities to LHU students over the course of the project,” said LHU President Dr. Robert Pignatello. “I would like to commend Dr. Spooner for his hard work and for his role in securing this funding that will enable Lock Haven University biology students to build on what they are learning in class and explore real, current and meaningful environmental issues.” “Hopefully, our project will shed some light on how complex chemicals like PFAS behave in our rivers, lakes and streams,” Spooner said. “The mesocosms used in this study will facilitate numerous student projects on a diverse array of environmental topics for many years after this particular project is completed.” As part of the project, Spooner and students will construct a series of artificial mesocosms, which are flumes designed to simulate freshwater stream ecosystems. These mesocosms will be housed on LHU’s campus and will consist of fish, invertebrates, and biofilms like algae, fungi and bacteria that occupy different compartments of stream ecosystems. In addition to examining how organisms respond to PFAS exposure, Spooner and students will also evaluate if fish with different ecological traits have the capacity to augment or curtail the fate of PFAS in stream ecosystems — one of the more interesting facets of the study, according to Spooner. “These are fairly complex studies that will give students experience in animal husbandry and quantifying metrics of ecosystem health,” Spooner said. “I’m hoping that students will gain some experience designing and implementing experiments.”

The Census in Lock Haven
On January 21, 2020, the US started the long process of counting the population. The census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support for people and their community. With billions of dollars at stake for school safety, federal Pell grants, health care, and other federal programs that are important to college students and college towns, the U.S. Census Bureau is doing everything it can to make sure all college students are counted in the right place. Lock Haven needs your help. In Lock Haven, only 60.5% of residents, including college students, have responded to the census. If you left your college or university because the campus was closed due to COVID-19, and you lived in campus housing, you do not need to count yourself; your school will do it for you. If you lived off campus in an apartment or house, count yourself (and any roommates) where you would have been living on April 1 in your col-
lege town. Don’t count yourself at your parent’s home, or on their census response If a census taker contacts your household by phone or in person, please cooperate and answer all the questions so you can be included in the 2020 Census. It’s important that college students who live in off-campus housing in college towns respond to the census because the results influence how billions in federal funding will be distributed every year over the next 10 years. “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” review Krissy Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor The movie “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is the amazing true story of Joseph and his colorful coat. Joseph is given a colorful coat from his father because Joseph can interpret dreams and he is favored over his eleven brothers. His brothers are jealous and they respond by throwing him into a pit and selling Joseph to a couple of traders going to Egypt. Joseph works for a captain named Potiphar as a servant. Soon after, Joseph is thrown into jail after Potiphar’s wife forces Joseph to sleep with her. Joseph is then taken to the pharaoh because he is needed to interpret the pharaoh’s dream and when he does, he becomes the righthand-man to the pharaoh. Joseph eventually takes over as a famine comes upon Egypt. Meanwhile, Joseph’s family is hurting from the famine and his brothers regretted what they did to Joseph. The brothers go to Egypt to ask for food. When they get there, they do not recognize the pharaoh as Joseph, their brother. They begged for food and Joseph gave them sacks of food, but also snuck a golden cup into his youngest brother’s sack to frame him. That got his youngest brother into trouble and Joseph’s other brothers begged not to send their young brother
to jail. Joseph had been determined for a little bit, but after a while, he asked why they didn’t recognize him and he told them who he was. All 12 brothers were reunited again. The movie, which was released on November 8, 1999, was directed by David Mallet. The cast consists of Donny Osmond, Maria Friedman, Richard Attenborough, Ian McNeice and Robert Torti. I thought this was an awesome movie because it told the true story of Joseph and how he had to forgive his brothers for what they did to him. I thought the actors did an amazing job because they brought the story to life. They put a lot of energy and music into their characters, as well as into the movie. A cool fact about the movie is that the boy that Maria Friedman sings to at the beginning of the movie is her son, Toby, who was 4 at the time. Another piece of trivia is that many viewers have said that the role of Joseph was Donny Osmond’s hottest role due to his long hair and his passionate brown eyes.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has recently announced the much-anticipated PlayStation 5 console that will be available for purchase beginning on November 12, 2020. This console has been improved in all aspects of gaming. The system itself has a faster processing system in terms of loading screens for games and also powering up the system. The graphics have been improved from the PlayStation 4 so that they will be much sharper. PlayStation is releasing two types of consoles: one system with an Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Drive and another system that is completely digital. Pricing for the consoles is $499 with the Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Drive and $399 for the Digital edition. The controllers of the PlayStation 5 have also been redesigned.
The controllers have been designed to be more DualSense. This idea is to be able to give players the feeling of being more immersed in the game. Games for PlayStation 5 have slowly been getting announced. These include: Final Fantasy XVI, Grand Theft Auto, a Harry Potter game called “Hogwarts Legacy,” and others.

Don’t let the quarantine blues ruin the excitement of the spooky holiday for you. Find below a fun-filled guide of how to keep the Halloween spirit while being socially distant. Spooky Movie Marathon Or TV Show Binge- Find the horror section and the thriller section of your streaming service of choice and pick out a few things to watch. If you are faint of heart or like Halloween but night the thrills of fright night, stick to light-hearted Halloween movies or even just monster themed movies. Hardcore scary movie fans would enjoy content like: “American Horror Story” “Silence of the Lambs”, any of the Halloween Films, “Nightmare on Elm Street”, “Oculus”, and “House of the End of the Street.” For more light-hearted fans or anyone with little ones running around try out a few of this content: “The Addams Family”, “Halloween Town”, “Hocus Pocus”, “Monsters Inc”, “Coraline”, “The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Scooby-Doo movies because you know all the monsters! Remember to check out the guidelines for what movies age are age appropriate for anyone underage too! Movies like “Coraline” have been proven to be scarier than what meets the eye. Buy yourself candy- Since it seems unlikely there will be any if at all trick or treaters this October 31, go ahead and get your own candy stash. Doesn’t everyone sneak a few from their own stash or have the leftovers for themselves? This year, splurge and have a little bit of a sweet treat every day. If candy isn’t your vibe you can always make delectable caramel apples, monster rice krispie treats, or anything pumpkin and pumpkin spice related will help put you in the holiday spirit. Make a Halloween Playlist- Music can put anyone into the spirit, besides why should Christmas lovers be the only aggressively played holiday music? Unless you count all love songs for Valentine’s Day, but feels like a stretch. Check out songs that will give you spooky vibes like “Monster Mash” by Bobby Pickett, any rendition of The Addams Family theme song, “Witch Doctor”, “I Put a Spell on You”, “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” by Nirvana, and David Bowie music comes with spooks as well as My Chemical Romance if you’ve got time check it out.

Kerri Hoover kah4338@lockhaven.edu Ads/Design Manager Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte: by Inspired Taste Servings: 2 Prep Time: 10 minutes Ingredients: 2 cups milk (whole, 2%, skim, dairy-free, coconut, or almond milk) 2 TBSP pumpkin puree 1-3 TBSP sugar (depends on how sweet you like it) 1 TBSP vanilla extract ½ TSP pumpkin pie spice (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves mixture) ½ cup strong, hot coffee Whipped cream Directions: Add milk, pumpkin puree, and sugar to a saucepan over medium heat. Heat until hot, but do not boil. Remove the saucepan from the heat and whisk in the vanilla, pumpkin pie spice, and the coffee. Divide the mixture between two mugs. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice. Easy Microwave Apple Crisp in a Mug: by Yellow Bliss Road Servings: 1 Prep Time: 8 minutes Ingredients: For the apple filling: 1 apple peeled and sliced thin 1/2 TBSP of melted butter 1/4 TSP cinnamon 1 TSP brown sugar 1 TSP flour For the crisp topping: 2 TBSP of softened butter (not melted) 1 TBSP flour 3 TBSP old fashioned oats 1 TBSP brown sugar ¼ TSP cinnamon
Directions: Mix apple filling ingredients in a small bowl. Mix together crisp ingredients. Work in the butter with a fork. Layer half the apples in a microwave safe bowl or mug. Top with half the crisp mixture. Add another layer of apples and then the remaining crisp mixture. Place in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes. Careful, it will be very hot when removed from the microwave! Serve warm with whipped topping or vanilla ice cream. Easy Chicken Pot Pie by Betty Crocker Servings: 6 Prep Time: 45 minutes Ingredients: 1 ⅔ cup frozen mixed vegetables, frozen 1 cup chopped cooked chicken 1 can (10 ½ oz) condensed cream of chicken soup 1 cup Bisquick mix ½ cup milk 1 egg Directions: Heat oven to 375°F. Spray 9-inch pie pan with cooking spray. Add vegetables, chicken, and soup and stir to combine. In a medium bowl, stir remaining ingredients until blended. Pour into pie pan. Bake uncovered 25 to 30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.

Should TikTok be banned?
Kristin Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor In the recent news, there was an order to have TikTok shut down and banned. Trump had issued an order on August 14 that set the November 12 deadline for the sale of TikTok. TikTok is short videos that are usually funny, entertaining or inspirational. They could have music, dancing, animals, or kids. Originally when TikTok was first released, it was supposed to replace Vine that had the same idea. TikTok videos could be about anything from school life to romance to anything in the recent news or to something funny to brighten up your day. I am on TikTok everyday and I see that nobody likes that TikTok could be banned and sold and there are people trying to petition to save TikTok or to have some company buy TikTok so it can keep going. I certainly don’t want TikTok to go because I have found many videos on there that have kept a smile on my face and I have just laughed at them. There are some that I can even relate to as well as far as school, mental health, weather and sometimes it will be something in the recent news. I especially love the ones with my favorite breed of dog, a husky. I’ve seen TikToks with bunnies, dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs and ducks that are cute and funny. If I were to have a say on whether or not TikTok should get banned and sold, I would say that TikTok should stay because it is very entertaining and there are ones that are very inspiring and informative.
Many celebrities and companies have a TikTok like Nickelodeon, Brad Paisley, Marvel Studios, Donny Osmond, Nicole Scherzinger, Randy Travis, Luke Evans, Michael Buble, Imagine Dragons, Robin Thicke, Foxtv, Jeff Dunham and Johnny Depp. Another reason that TikTok is coming up in the news for possibly being banned and sold is because it was created by a company in China called ByteDance. TikTok has become so popular since it’s release in September 2016 that I know if TikTok did get banned and sold, a lot of people would rebel including yours truly because those funny, cute, and inspirational TikToks make us laugh and smile and brighten our days to get us through the hard times, especially with the craziness of the Coronavirus breakout still looming around keeping everyone under lock and key.

Why “Cuties” should be cancelled Kiara Carson knc9459@lockhaven.edu Managing Editor Before even watching this movie, “Cuties” which was released by Netflix, I heard a lot of interesting commentary all over the internet talking about how inappropriate this movie is and after watching it highly agree! I mean, when you first hear the title, it doesn’t sound so bad, right? Even the synopsis Netflix provides of the movie seems innocent. Well it definitely isn’t because this movie pushes boundaries that I never thought I’d see in a movie ever. It was one of the most disturbing and painfully bothersome movies I’ve ever seen, so much so that it made me cringe at almost every moment in the film. Luckily, I was able to write down everything that made me cringe, in between my fits of nausea (another side effect of this catastrophe), and compiled the perfect list that could be used to get this very horrible movie banned for LIFE. Everything wrong with this movie: 1. 11-year-old little girls in crop tops, short skirts, and high heels 2. Those same little girls talking about sex in public/at school 3. Little girls promoting pornography by looking at pictures on their phones and forcing another girl to video tape a boy peeing in the boy’s restroom 4. A little girl touching a dirty condom in the park which causes the rest of the girls to freak out as they ridiculously believe condoms are only used by people who have AIDS 5. Little girls trying to catfish boys in public and online so that they can get attention
6. Little girls fighting and cursing over the stupid and inappropriate things they do 7. Little girls learning how to twerk so they can win a dance competition 8. Little girls running around their town alone with no adult supervision and going out whenever they please 9. Main little girl, Amy, dancing seductively in front of a grown male security guard to get out of trouble 10. Little girls making a video of themselves dancing inappropriately and posting it online for thousands to see 11. Little girls constantly doing gestures that they just shouldn’t be allowed to do like biting their lips and putting their fingers in their mouths 12. Amy trying to seduce her older cousin so that he wouldn’t take his phone that she stole from him away from her 13. Amy posting a nude picture of herself online from said stolen phone before it was taken from her 14. Amy stabbing a boy classmate for calling her rude names and calling her out in front of the whole class about her posting that picture. With everything going on in the world pertaining to #SaveOurChildren and the human/sex trafficking, we don’t need a movie that’s purposely sexualizing young girls and dressing it up as “rebellion against their culture/religion”. There shouldn’t be any reason why those girls in the film were running around their town half-naked acting like “grown women” when clearly, they were not. Hopefully, Netflix will come to their senses and takedown the movie for good.

LHU Athletics mourns the loss of Karl Herrmann LHU Department of Atheletics dspatafo@lockhaven.edu
The Lock Haven University Department of Athletics mourns the loss of Emeritus Karl Herrmann, who passed away this weekend. Herrmann was a longtime faculty member and coach at The Haven. LHU athletics extends its condolences to his family and friends. He began his tenure at Lock Haven University in 1965 in the Health Sciences Department while coaching soccer, baseball, basketball and tennis. Notably, he led the men’s soccer team to a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships. Herrmann was also known locally as the “father of AYSO soccer.” He helped establish the physician assistant program and taught several of its inaugural courses. After retiring in 1997 with emeritus status, Herrmann continued involvement with the university, serving on the LHU Foundation Board. He and his wife, Lynne, have also established a soccer and a health science scholarship. Herrmann’s contributions and dedication to Lock Haven University impacted countless individuals.
