volunteer boards announce new leadership
The Lock Haven University Foundation and LHU Alumni Association announced new volunteer board leadership, effective July 1, the start of the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Steve Tasselli is the newly elected Chair of the LHU Foundation Board of Directors. Tasselli is a 1978 graduate of Lock Haven State College. He has served on the board since 2011. Joining Tasselli in leadership positions are Bobby Maguire (Vice Chair), Ron Bowes ’66 (Treasurer) and Jim Berkebile ‘59 (Secretary). Tasselli, Maguire and Berkebile are newly elected into their roles, and Bowes was re-elected as the board’s treasurer, a position he has held since 2014. The Foundation Board is comprised of three committees: Advancement, Finance and Governance. Newly elected committee chairs are Scott Culpepper ’71 (Advancement), Col. Bob Blose ’71 (Finance) and Jennifer Riter ’96 (Governance). Despite the many challenges COVID-19 presented in the final quarter of the fiscal year, the Foundation also announced various areas of growth in key fundraising metrics for 2019-2020. In all, 550 scholarships were awarded to more than 460 Lock Haven University students in the 2019-2020 school year, increases over the previous year of 17 percent and 5 percent, respectively. In total, more than 699,000 dollars in scholarships was awarded to LHU students. A slight increase over 20182019 statistics. Along with providing scholarships to students, another major focus for the Foundation is generating emergency resources to help LHU retain students experiencing financial hardship.
The Student Retention Fund was established by Dr. Robert Pignatello, LHU President in 2018. Since its inception the fund has accumulated over 91,000 dollars. These funds are used to help Lock Haven University students bridge gaps in their tuition that would otherwise jeopardize their enrollment, allowing them the opportunity to continue their education and earn their degree. “This is an important time for Lock Haven University. Now, more than ever, we need to support the University and our students,” Tasselli said. “I, and the entire board, look forward to working with our campus community to help provide critical resources that our students need to be successful.” The Lock Haven University Alumni Association Board of Directors also announced new leadership effective July 1. Dan Cruttenden is the board’s new president. Cruttenden , Class of 1973, takes over for Ed Wright ’71 who served as president for the past two years. Joining Cruttenden in leadership roles are Amee Lewis Vance ‘75 (Vice President), Kyle Losch ’15 (Treasurer) and Malarie Hastings ’09 (Secretary). A key highlight for the Alumni Association board in the 2019-2020 school year was the establishment of the LHU Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship. The scholarship will award 1,000 dollars per student to up to four legacy students per year. A legacy student is defined as a child, grandchild, sibling or legally adopted dependent of a Lock Haven University graduate. It will begin being awarded this fall. “We are happy to support these financial incentives to encourage more legacy students to come to our beloved alma mater where we know they will receive an affordable, top-notch education,” Wright said. “We want to continue our long and storied history of Lock Haven University legacy students following in their relatives’ footsteps.” “I am looking forward to continuing the great work and momentum the Alumni Association board experienced under Ed Wright’s leadership,” Cruttenden said. “Knowing the strength of the personnel in the LHU Alumni Office and the commitment of our board members, I believe we will continue to be a positive force in promoting Lock Haven University and the importance of alumni staying involved after graduating.” The LHU Alumni Association’s Board of Directors consists of 20 alumni from the 1970’s to the 2010’s and every decade in between. The Board is divided into four committees: Legacy, Development, Campus and Relationships. Each committee works closely with LHU Alumni Office staff to assist in fundraising, marketing, relationship-building and event planning initiatives that support Lock Haven University.

Alumni donors establish George Floyd Scholarship
The Lock Haven University Foundation has announced the establishment of the George Floyd Scholarship, the result of a five-figure donation from an alumni couple who wish to remain anonymous. The George Floyd Scholarship will award 2,500 dollars annually to an African-American student who demonstrates leadership for racial and social justice, and has completed their first year at LHU in good academic standing. “We hope this gift awakens our fellow alumni to the importance of supporting social justice in America,” one of the donors said. “We hope our fellow alumni will join us in supporting African-American student leaders at Lock Haven University.” The George Floyd Scholarship was established shortly after Lock Haven University announced the creation of its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The new office will serve as a resource for the campus community, and ensure input from all of its diverse populations help the university fulfill a crucial part of its mission to be an inclusive vehicle for change. “Our country faces an inflection point in our history,” Dr. Robert Pignatello, LHU President said upon the office’s creation. “This is a moment that demands change born of meaningful action on the part of individuals and institutions alike. Our university must contribute to this change and be part of the solution.” The donors of the George Floyd Scholarship credit their experience as Lock Haven students as the catalyst of their passion for social justice. They hope the George Floyd Scholarship will continue Lock Haven University’s tradition of supporting underserved populations. “We attended Lock Haven (University) in the late 70s and early 80s when it wasn’t necessarily popular to support the LGBTQ community and here was this small, rural school that was not only supporting this population of students, but really

“The Umbrella Academy” review Tess English tae7002@lockhaven.edu Online Editor Season two of the Netflix series “The Umbrella Academy” dropped over summer break and it delivers an equal amount of entertainment that was present in season one. The series truly captures the chaotic relationships of family, but heightens the drama with superpowers and the problematic season arc of traveling back in time. “Umbrella Academy” follows a dysfunctional line of seven superhero children, adopted by a famous billionaire, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, played by Colm Feore. The children had an intense upbringing with more than questionable parenting tactics from their adoptive father to reach their full power potentials. Children one through six are pushed in these ways. Number Seven, Vanya Hargreeves, appears to be ordinary and is set apart from the other children. Even though the “Umbrella Academy” children are a mess they are portrayed with love between family members sort of trying to cast aside their differences and be a family again despite their supersized family history and trauma. Season two of “Umbrella Academy” follows this ensemble time traveling back in time around the 1960’s. The only problem is the siblings have all appeared in different years in Dallas, Texas. Everyone, except number Five, is unsure of where they’re siblings are in this new timeline when they arrive in their respec-
tive years. Five has the “benefit” of being the last one to arrive on the timeline. Unfortunately, number Five arrives and he comes to see that his siblings in this new timeline have somehow brought about a premature apocalypse. Five is lucky enough to find a way to travel back 10 days before when he first arrives from when the premature end of the world is going to happen. The structure of this season can be somewhat fragmented due to the obvious implications of time travel, but since Five is the only family member who understands time travel he is constantly explaining it to his siblings. This helps keep a level of continuity along with clearly defined moments of flashbacks, flash forwards, and then what is considered to be the main timeline or rather “the present.” It sounds daunting, but rest assured Five will always be stressing the importance of the current timeline, how it came to be, and why they must save it. Overall the show is incredibly funny mixing realism of family personalities clashing while balancing the very serious and impending drama of the world ending. There is plenty of action and frightening scenes as well. Fair warning that it is a bit of a dense show and it takes a lot of time to watch. Additionally, the show is incredibly dark due to the stark nature of the characters’ upbringing.

“Detroit 2” album review

Big Sean’s fifth studio album, “De2,” dropped recently on Friday, Sept. 4, 2020. The album, originally set to drop before Sean’s Coachella 2020 debut, was put off for months due to COVID-19. “Detroit 2” is the sequel to Sean’s critically acclaimed 2012 mixtape “Detroit.” The album has many features, including the late Nipsey Hussle, Post Malone, Anderson .Paak, and many more. There are also short stories told by Erykah Badu, Dave Chappelle, and Detroit-native Stevie Wonder, all depicting how they are connected to Detroit. The album overall is more of what Sean does best: upbeat, wordy, and coming straight from his heart. Songs like ‘Lithuania’ featuring Travis Scott and

‘Time In’ featuring Twenty88, Sean and Jhene Aiko’s duo act, are fun to listen to from the production to the lyrics. Balancing work and school Cassandra Keller cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Managing Editor Imagine for a moment, that all your living expenses and extra college expenses were paid for while you were attending higher education. Sounds pretty nice, right? Ok wake up now, it’s time to face reality. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2018, 81 percent of part-time college students and 43 percent of full-time college students were employed. So if you are like that majority of students, you have to find the balance between working a job and attending school. Flexibility is extremely important in finding that balance. Even if you have a course schedule, assignment due dates and test dates are never set in stone. A professor can change or even add to that schedule throughout a semester depending on the pace of the class. The same can be said about extra curricular activities, so you need an employer who can work around your schedule, even as it changes. Employers who have hired college students in the past understand this need for flexibility and make for great places for students to start working while in school. That flexibility can only go so far however. A big part of balancing work and school comes down to learning how to work smarter instead of
harder. That could mean anything from figuring out your learning style and the study techniques that work better for that style to simply utilizing the time to get work done when possible. For example, I’m writing this article while I’m on break at my part-time job. Before you start working on school assignments while working your job, check with your employer for when it is acceptable to be working on those assignments. However, and more important than anything else, it is especially crucial to practice self-care. Trying to balance work and school takes a lot of energy and it is easy to get caught up in assignments and work shifts. You need to know your own limits with how far you can extend yourself. If you don’t take care of yourself, that limit gets a lot smaller and if you push yourself, it can affect your work performance and assignment quality. Finding a balance of work and school can be hard and not being at 100 percent makes it that much harder. So relax, you got this.

Remembering Chadwick Boseman Kristin Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor This year has been filled with such an overwhelming amount of loss due to the Corononavirus, riots, police brutality, etc. but this loss was one we defintely weren’t prepared for. Chadwick Boseman was an outstanding and amazing american actor. He went to Oxford University, which was paid for by Denzel Washington. He is most known for his role as Prince T’Challa aka The Black Panther in a few of the Marvel movies but his legacy reaches far beyond that starring in other highly anticipated films such as “Marshall”, “Message From the King”,“Gods of Egypt”, “42”, and “Draft Day.” He was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2016 and battled with it for 4 years until his death in 2020. When he died on August 28, 2020, his co-stars have paid tribute to him by telling the public the kind of person that Chadwick was. Michael B. Jordan, who worked with Chadwick on the movie “Black Panther,” said that Chadwick had told him that they were forever linked and now he was seeing the truth to that. He talked about being more aware that time is short with loved ones and talked about Chadwick’s honesty, generosity, sense of humor and incredible gifts. Letitia Wright, who played his sister in the Marvel movies, talked about how close she was with Chadwick and
how it felt like they really were siblings. Personally, when I first saw Chadwick Boseman in the movie “42” starring as the legendary baseball player, Jackie Robinson, I thought he was a phenomenal actor because he put a lot of heart into the role. Then, I watched him in the Marvel movies, “Message from the King”, and “Marshall.” I love how skillful he was in portraying a character, even if it meant using different accents like the ones he uses in the Marvel movies and “Message from the King”. I also love how committed he was when he played Thurgood Marshall in the movie “Marshall” really making the true story of the first African-American lawyer in the Supreme Court Justice come to life. Aside from movies, I think that Chadwick was quite the warrior when he was battling his colon cancer. I didn’t even know that he was battling cancer until the news of his death broke out. He kept his battle with colon cancer pretty quiet and it seemed to be for good reason, too. I have seen videos of him visiting kids in the hospital and surprising his fans and it shows me that he was a good person and he cared about not only his fans, but everyone else as well.

Taking a look at the media Kerri Hoover kah4338@lockhaven.edu Ad/Design Manager In a tech-savvy world where we can easily and quickly access information at our fingertips, our lives are constantly bombarded by news and the media. The media is not viewed in a good light. For many people, the only connotation they have of the media is a negative one. I can completely relate to this because sometimes all it feels like is the media constantly weighing everybody down. Now, this might seem ironic to you since I am a Communication major focusing my studies in media related fields. However, I will be the first person to tell you the media is not always good. The reason so many people see the media as bad is not because of inaccurate interpretations, but unfair coverage. First off, I do not think that the media reports enough positive stories and messages. From personal experience, I hear more positive stories covered on local news then most mainstream media giants like CNN and MSNBC. Mainstream media networks tend to find all the negatives and then report them to their audiences, making people feel discouraged and dissatisfied with what is going on in the world. I have heard very few media outlets, outside of FOX, who attempt to pick the positives out of different situations. I am not saying that the media needs to conceal the negative things that are happening from the American because it is important for us to be informed citizens. What I am saying, is that the media needs to try and encourage viewers more or at least provide them with a call-to-action in order to invoke positive changes in society. The media is supposed to be unbiased. But, to be quite frank. I think that is a bunch of bullcrap. If you think the media is neutral, especially when it comes to political coverage, I would take a look again. I think local media outlets do a better job of providing unbiased information to audiences compared to the
mainstream media. If you look at the political affiliation of news anchors, commentators, news reporters, and owners of mainstream media networks, most of them lean left on the political spectrum. Then, when people watch or read those sources most of the ideas expressed are pro-left and anti-right. Most often then not, if there is news coverage of politicians or other individuals that do not possess the same political values as those expressed within the mainstream media, those individuals’ actions, thoughts, and even lives are demeaned in front of the whole world. These ideas reflected in the media then influence Americans politically without letting them decide for themselves what they believe or think. While bias in the media exists on the opposite side of the political spectrum too, it is not the extreme as it is on the left. The media is populated with leftist views; therefore, that is what people hear about. I do not think that left-leaning media outlets give enough credit to the accomplishments of people who do not think like they do. In order for media coverage to be considered fair, in my opinion, the mainstream media needs to shy away from bias, give credit where credit is due, and make an attempt to encourage people more without hiding from them what is actually going on.

Just when West decided to kick off his ride in the 2020 Presidential Election, things went downhill. At West’s first official rally, he mentioned how he and his wife, TV personality Kim Kardashian, considered abortion of their first-born child, North West. He later took to Twitter by tweeting several controversial statements surrounding his wife, family, and more. LHU Men’s Soccer announces recruiting class By: John Davern LHU Communications Intern LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The 2019 Lock Haven University men’s soccer team finished its season on a four-match win streak, knocking off four PSAC teams in the process, and created some upfield momentum for an upcoming season. Riding that wave, head coach Patrick Long and his team have announced the addition of eight players, who make up the 2020-21 recruiting class. All of the players have signed a National Letter of Intent, have been accepted and/or have enrolled at Lock Haven University. The team infuses a class full of character and leadership as they add seven former captains from their High School and club ranks. Building on a relatively young squad, The Haven men and Long hope that this class is as strong as last years, which saw the emergence of All-American Andrea Disomma as a true freshman. Additionally, the class features some talent previously coached by LHU soccer alumni. Additions Brady Freiwald and transfer Will Kamga both played for LHU alumni on the club scene. Freiwald played under Craig Shale (91’) for The Blazers, while Kamga was coached by Mike Corney (83’) for the PA Classics.
Former graduate assistant coach John Schwien played a large role in this recruiting class, to an effect that Long wanted to recognize; “I greatly appreciate Coach Schwien’s tireless work throughout the recruiting cycle. We scoured the Mid-Atlantic for guys that fit our needs and will enhance the program. These eight individuals will keep the program heading in the right direction.” Coach Schwien recently accepted an assistant coaching position at NCAA Division I IUPUI.
