NASA rover discovers odd turquoise rock on Mars Levi Deitz Copy Editor lwd6487@lockhaven.edu

The twitter account for NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover tweeted a picture on March 31of an odd rock, recently discovered by the rover, that captured its followers’ attention. The rock was found in the Jezero Crater, an ancient lake bed on Mars. It is turquoise in color and is full of indentations that reveal light brown and yellow spots. In the tweet showing the rock, the rover said,“it’s about 6 inches (15 cm) long. If you look closely, you might spot the row of laser marks where I zapped it to learn more.” According to Space.com, the laser used is part of the “rock-zapping SuperCam instrument.” The SuperCam vaporizes the rocks it zaps and analyzes the gas that comes out afterward. With it, scientists hope to learn more about the composition of the rock. Learning the composition of the rock could help scientists learn where the rock was formed. Although there is no definitive an-

swer to what the rock is, the team has theorized that it could be something that has been weathered out of the local bedrock. Other theories included that it could be a meteorite, or a piece of Mars that has been “plopped into the air from a far-flung impact event.” If it was transported there, scientists want to find out how. The New York Post mentioned that it could have gotten there on a meteor, or that it could have been transported by an ancient water source. The Perseverance was launched back in July 2020, and landed on Mars in February 2021. NASA has stated that its mission is to “seek signs of ancient life and collect samples of rock and regolith (broken rock and soil) for possible return to Earth.” The rover is expected to be up there for several years, while working to complete its mission. The $2.7 billion mission is just another step in NASA’s attempts to prepare Earth’s neighbor for human exploration.

‘Zombie’ sea urchins devour kelp forests along West Coast Kerri Hoover News/Advertising/Design Editor kah4338@lockhaven.edu Kelp forest populations are significantly depleting due to the recent infestation of purple sea urchins along the Northern California coastline. According to National Public Radio (NPR), 95% of the kelp forests along the West Coast have disappeared since 2014. Most of the vanishing kelp is known as bull kelp, a brown species of algae native to Santa Cruz, California. Climate change is said to be the largest contributing factor to the population’s disappearance. Studies from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) show that as the climate gets warmer, marine heat waves become more frequent and intense. The warm water is low in nutrients which affect the kelp from thriving, resulting in a diminishing population. Global warming is also causing an outbreak of various diseases among marine life, most notably starfish. In addition, the diseases are lessening the predator population along the West Coast. Since sea urchins are a common snack for many predatory marine mammals, like sea otters, their population has been exploding due to the limited threat. However, a popular snack among sea urchins is kelp. Therefore, the greater the population of sea urchins, the greater loss of kelp forests. The ocean floor, once covered with lushish kelp forests, is now being inhabited by a “purple carpet” of spiky sea urchins on the lookout for a snack.

These sea urchins earned the nickname “zombies” after Morgan Murphy-Cannella, Reef Check California kelp reforestation coordinator, described their “bizarre” nature as zombie-like - long-lasting life span and do not always need food to survive. Scientists are trying to figure out ways in order to help save and restore the West Coast’s kelp forest population. So far, they have devised three different strategies that focus largely on decreasing the sea urchin population. The first strategy is to remove large amounts of sea urchins from the ocean floor, in particular ones that are dead and/or unhealthy. To date, divers have collected over 20,000 pounds of urchins with hopes of returning to the waters this year in order to remove more. The second and third strategies focus on depopulating the urchins through the use of predators. One way is to reintroduce animal predatory species, such as sea otters and starfish, into their native habitats that way they will eat the urchins, decreasing the population. Another way is to harvest the urchins and sell them to human consumers on the seafood market. The overpopulation of sea urchins and depletion of kelp forests provide a significant threat to the ecological environment surrounding the California coast. Environmentalists are using these occurrences to help gain awareness for climate change by providing evidence of its detrimental consequences to the environment.

Apr. 9, 2021 “Feel Good” wants others to feel great

Movie Quote: “Danger is very real, but fear is a choice.” Last week’s movie: “Ben-Hur”

Tess English tae7002@lockhaven.edu Online Manager

“Feel Good” is one of Netflix’s many new releases to hit the streaming shelf in 2020. The dramatic comedy was widely received enough to be picked up for the second season at the end of the year and with great reason. Part of the show’s success is that the co-creator, Mae Martin uses the show as almost a semi-autobiography about herself. So in essence Mae is playing a version of herself and acting out events that inspired by her life. This assures a certain level of realism throughout the show while it takes on some pretty challenging storylines. “Feel Good” follows struggling comedy artist Mae Martin, and not just with her career. Mae also battles her life-long addiction to narcotics which can only become more strenuous paired with managing her new relationship with her girlfriend George. This is George’s first time being in a lesbian relationship. She struggles to tell her friends, family, and others about her relationship with Mae despite the fact they’ve been together for 6 months. Striking this balance between wanting to be a part of her girlfriend’s life while respecting George’s struggle with sexual identity, have a successful comedy career, and staying sober proves to become more difficult by episode. One of the things that viewers might struggle with is the faint buzz or ringing that intentionally happens throughout the show. This noise is an artistic way to point out Mae’s addiction. When one goes off it can be a sign she’s thinking

about using drugs again. While there are some feel-good moments in Feel Good, the story overall is laced with sorrow. It might be heavy to watch or triggering for anyone struggling with sobriety. If one can get past those few obstacles, then “Feel Good” is more than likely a must-watch series for you. The plot is interesting, with great actors, amazing story-telling, and lots of laughs to enjoy when viewing the show. her own!

Kristin Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor The video game, “Among the Sleep,” is a first-person survival horror game that has action and adventure in it and was released by Krillbite Studios on December 10, 2015. You are playing a two-year-old little boy whose mother is an abusive alcoholic and turns into a monster because she doesn’t want to give her little boy to his father. In the game, you are trying to make sense of your mother’s surroundings without trying to get killed. You have the help of the teddy bear that you got for your second birthday for three-quarters of the game and then you’re on your own. Your goal in the game is to get through your mother’s surroundings and make sense of it without getting caught by your mother, who has turned into a monster and is trying to kill you. The main antagonist is the mother who appears at first like a caring mother but as the game goes on, she is really a divorced, alcoholic, abusive mother who is barely holding on to her sanity. One day, famous YouTuber, Markiplier, played this game and I instantly wanted to try it thinking it was a fun game to play. When I got a Nintendo Switch, I looked this game

up on Walmart and got it because I wanted to play it on my Nintendo Switch. It was a lot of fun even with the creepy jumpscares, but the storyline was so good it made up for all the horror. The only part that I didn’t like was that the game was from the viewpoint of a two-year-old little boy who has an abusive, alcoholic mother who turns into a monster. I think they used unrealistic emotions of a two-year-old little boy. Any average two-year-old would be terrified of going through the surroundings of his mother and monsters and wouldn’t understand that his mother was abusive and an alcoholic and that his father wanted to take him away from his mother to raise him in a better environment. Other than that, it had good graphics, a good storyline and had a lot of jumpscares in the game. It was like playing in a horror movie. This is definitely a video game that will make your hair stand on end with the jumpscares but it will also keep you on the edge of your seat with the storyline as it rolls throughout the game.

How to cope with trauma Annie Barnhart agb8459@lockhaven.edu Staff Writer Trauma is a topic on everyone’s minds but no one has the gumption to say anything about it. The fear of speaking up about it mostly comes from feeling alone, but chances are you’re not alone in your grief. It almost feels like anything can trigger a traumatic experience especially after being a victim yourself. Below, I have a list of helpful suggestions on how to cope with trauma and heal from things that we sometimes feel unable to talk about: • Mobilize a support system – reach out and connect with others, especially those who may have shared the stressful event • Talk about the traumatic experience with empathic listeners • Cry it OUT, have no shame, this is how our bodies release toxic energy • Hard exercise like jogging, bicycling, walking • Relaxation (always make time for selfcare!) • Prayer and/or meditation; listening to relaxing guided imagery; progressive deep muscle relaxation • Hot bath • Music and art • Maintain a balanced diet and sleep cycle as much as possible (it actually helps!) • Avoid over-using stimulants like caffeine, sugar, or nicotine • Commitment to something personally meaningful and important every day • Hug those you love, pets included!!! (what about petting your furbabies?) • Write about your experience – in detail, just for yourself or to share with others who will listen (how about painting?) As someone who suffers from trauma, I have personally sought out answers as to why I feel this way, even after so many years. Unfortunately, there is no correct way to help someone who's experienced trauma. What has worked for me, might not work for you and that is okay! Thankfully, there are hundreds of ways to help yourself cope and continue growing as a person after trauma.

Your life doesn't stop after hardship. Life is full of so many beautiful, amazing experiences and people willing to hold your hand through the tough moments, and rejoice in the good ones. Write out your feelings, do your affirmations and eat some carbs. And always remember, there is no shame in asking for support and guidance in this crazy life. You matter, and you always will. Keep going!

Should grandparnets raise their grandchildren? Kristin Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor

It was always standard that kids were raised by their parents and some had the grandparents living in the household. That has changed a lot over the years and it went to kids living in the household and being raised by their parents. Now, sometimes, kids being raised by their grandparents because of a variety of different reasons. I have three sets of grandparents between my parents. My one grandmother on my dad’s side has almost 24 years experience on this with my sister and I. She helped raise my sister and me from the time we were both born because of health issues my parents had. Any sacrifices that birth parents would make for their children, my grandmother has made those sacrifices to get my sister and I where we are today. Another of the other reason for grandparents to take on their grandkids to raise might be that the grandkids lost their parents. Additonally, sometimes parents are too busy or might not know how to raise their children. There might be a little bit of a struggle with grandparents raising their grandkids because there might be a bit of an age difference between the grandkids and the grandparents. Sometimes age gap and generational values can be a hinderance when grandparents are raising children. I know that my grandmother and I disagree a lot on certain issues because of this. Overall, it’s probably alright to let your grandparents help raise your children. As long as they are postive inf lunce in their lives.

How healthy is drinking tea? KristinTurner Opinions Editor kat5346@lockhaven.edu There are some ups and downs with tea but that’s because tea can get a bad reputation when drunk out of moderation. Tea actually is very healthy for you and has benefits to it. It can help you lose weight, help those with asthma, helps with sleep disorders, help soothe the symptoms of acid ref lux, help prevent acne breakouts, help you stay immune from other viruses or diseases and helps boost your immune system. All of these benefits depend on what tea you are drinking. Most of these benefits come from green tea, white tea, black tea or herbal tea. You have to limit how much black tea you drink because too much of it will cause kidney stones. In between, you can drink caffeine-free tea that will have no harm towards you. Green tea is especially good for your health because it has been linked to a lower risk for heart disease, cancer, diabetes and weight loss. Green tea is one of the healthiest teas you can drink along with white tea, jasmine tea and black tea. The benefits of green tea are that it can prevent cancer, lower cholesterol, lower the risk of a stroke, enhances your

working memory, helps with Alzheimer’s Disease, helps prevent dental cavities, lower stress levels, helps with chronic fatigue, helps with treating skin conditions and helps improve arthritis. The benefits of white tea are that it’s rich in antioxidants, may reduce the risk of heart disease, helps breakdown fat if you want to lose weight, helps protect your teeth from bacteria because it is a great source of f luoride, may help fight cancer, helps with diabetes, helps protect against osteoporosis, helps protect against skin aging and helps protect against Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease. It is one of the healthiest teas to drink. Benefits of black tea are it has antioxidants in it, helps with having a healthy heart, lowers bad cholesterol, improves a healthy gut, reduces blood pressure, reduces the risk of a stroke, lowers blood sugar levels, reduces the risk of getting cancer and improves your focus. It would be recommended that you drink black tea in moderation because too much of it can also cause kidney stones.

LHU Softball splits with Millersville Doug Spatafore Senior Director of Athletic Communications & Marketing dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Riley McClellan (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) hit a home run in the bottom of the fifth in game two and it proved to be the difference in powering the Bald Eagles to a 4-3 game-two win over visiting Millersville University, which helped the Lock Haven University softball team (4-12, 4-12 PSAC East) split with the Marauders. Millersville (11-9, 7-9 PSAC East) edged Lock Haven, 3-1 in game one. Summer Peters (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) homered in game one, but her solo shot to right-center field was not enough to carry the Bald Eagles to victory in the day’s opener. Millersville scored three runs on eight hits and won, 3-1. Peters finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Haley Lestician (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) was 2-for-3. LHU pitcher Kinley Gioglio (Stroudsburg, Pa./ Stroudsburg) recorded four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings of relief. McClellan’s fifth-inning home run proved to be the game-winning run in game two, as Lock Haven won, 4-3. McClellan is the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week. Overall, she was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in game two today. Morgan Karasek (Bangor, Pa./ Bangor) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Madison Waltman (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) pitched a complete-game gem in the game-two victory. She struck out 10 and scattered five hits on the way to victory. Today’s action marked the first since Lock Haven swept Millersville on the road last week (March 30). In that doubleheader, LHU scored a total of 20 runs on 22 hits.

McClellan was named the PSAC East Athlete of the Week April 5, thanks in large part to dominance at the plate in four PSAC East games last week and that momentum carried over to today. UP NEXT / SCHEDULE CHANGE: Lock Haven will return to action on Thursday, April 8 when the Bald Eagles host local-rival Mansfield in PSAC East action (2:30/4:30 p.m.). Please note, the new date, as the doubleheader has been moved up a day in hopes of avoiding rain in the forecast for Friday. Lock Haven will head to Mansfield for a Saturday (April 10) doubleheader (1/3 p.m.).
