LHU returning to face-to-face instruction for fall 2021 semester Julie Stellfox Media Contact jms833@lockhaven.edu

A press release came out on March 10 stating that: Lock Haven University plans to return to full-time face-to-face instruction for the fall 2021 semester.

Plans to resume in-person instruction will remain dependent upon the current COVID-19 climate at that time.

“We have been taking strategic steps throughout the pandemic to mitigate COVID-19 on our campus with the ultimate goal of bringing our campus community back together,” said Bashar Hanna, LHU interim president.

“We have slowly reopened some of our facilities to allow for more in-person classes, events and gatherings, while adhering to local and state COVID safety guidelines.”

While the fall 2021 semester plans are still being developed, the plan to return to in-person instruction on a full-time basis also includes: • On-campus residence halls will operate with a planned capacity allowing the university to welcome back more than 950 residential students.

• LHU will offer numerous opportunities for students to live without a roommate in any traditional residence hall room.

Students wanting a roommate will continue to have this option in all housing facilities.

• All campus dining venues will be open and in-person dining will resume and will be open to the public.

• Student-athletes will compete in intercollegiate athletic events and those contests will include some form of fan attendance based on CDC and Pennsylvania Department of Health guidelines.

The fall 2021 semester will begin on Monday, Aug. 23, with classes concluding on Friday, Dec. 3.

Final exams will be held from Dec. 6-9.

“We are excited to resume face-to-face instruction in the fall and have all of our students return to The Haven with the health and safety of our campus community remaining our top priority,” Hanna said.

“The University will continue to adhere to guidelines from the CDC and the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and directives from the Governor’s Office and the Office of the Chancellor of the State System. As our planning for the fall 2021 semester continues, LHU will also be prepared to adjust our plans accordingly, if necessary.”

The aftermath of the March 16 shooting which took the lives of eight people, six of whom were Asian, has sparked many conversations on the rise in violence and racism directed towards Asian people during the pandemic.

In the days following the shooting, protests denouncing anti-Asian sentiment were held in large cities across the country, such as Washington D.C. and New York.

According to a analysis done by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, crimes that targeted Asian people in America rose 150% in 2020, even though overall crime decreased by 7%.

Karthick Ramakrishnan, the director of demographic data and policy research nonprofit AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) Data, told NBC that former President Donald Trump’s rhetoric about the coronavirus was partially to blame for the rise in anti-Asian crime.

Ramakrishnan told NBC that Trump’s rhetoric helped to set a narrative, and that his frequent use of terms such as “China Virus” helped to foster hate towards Asian Americans.

Other countries have also seen a rise in antiAsian crimes.

According to Time, “the Asian-Australian Alliance received 377 reports of Covid-19-related racism between April and June last year,” and

the founder, Erin Wen Ai Chew, said that more than 500 reports have been documented since last year.

U.K. police data suggests that there was a 300% rise in hate crimes against Asians in the country in the first quarter of 2020 compared to 2018 and 2019.

According to Time, Chinese business owners in the U.K. have reported a variety of crimes such as being attacked, spat at, and some nurses of Asian descent reported racial abuse from their patients.

On March 29, President Biden announced that he will “reinstate and expand the scope of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.”

It was also announced that the Department of Health and Human Services will provide $49.5 million to institutions helping AAPI survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The National Science Foundation will also spend $33 million on studying bias and xenophobia.

The Department of Justice will establish an initiative to respond to anti-Asian violence that will help spread resources on national hate crime statistics, and promote accurate reporting of hate crimes.

Biden spoke about the violence towards Asian Americans in a speech earlier this month, saying that the violence is “wrong, its un-American and it must stop.”

Here is a list of shows that we hope get picked up again: 1. “ICarly”- There have been rumors about a revival and now those rumors are true that Icarly is coming back but it will be without Sam Puckett this time because Jennette McCurdy has quit acting.

2. “Blossom”- Mayim Bialik is trying to get the greenlight for a “Blossom” reboot but is struggling so who knows when and if a “Blossom” reboot is going to happen.

This week in history, Christians believe that the son of God, Jesus Christ, died on a cross as an act of salvation for the world and miraculously rose from the grave three days later. In honor of the Easter season, I have compiled a list of contemporary and gospel Christian songs, as well as a few country selections, to help us celebrate that Jesus is alive!

1. “Easter Song” by 2nd Chapter of Acts- The story of Easter Sunday is boldly told during this 1970s gospel song that showcases the joy Christians have toward Jesus’s resurrection. Feel free to check out the other cover versions of this song sung by Keith Green, GLAD, or Hella Heizmann.

2. “Glorious Day” by Passion (feat. Kristan Stanfill)- This upbeat Christian-pop song really brings out the joy in worshippers as they celebrate the freedom of God. This is a perfect song to get-up on your feet, jump and dance around, lift-up your hands, and praise the Lord!

Here are some ways on how to inspire yourself and others: 1.Move around-You’ll get exercise and it’ll help you figure out what you’re good at.

2. Find your niche-Figure out where you belong and what you are interested in that you’re good at.

3.Find a friend-It’s always a good idea to have a friend help you to inspire yourself or to motivate you to do something.

4. Passion-Figure out what you have a passion for and enhance it any way you can.

5. Remove negativity in your life, if possible, and try thinking positive thoughts.

Following a routine can be hard, especially if you don’t like doing certain aspects of the routine. Whether it be in the morning, or at work, it can sometimes be hard to find the motivation to complete everything that you have to do. Here are a few ways to make sticking to a routine easier.

The first thing you have to think about when following a routine is the order that you do things in. You shouldn’t put off your least favorite tasks until the very end, as you will probably be less motivated to do them.

Instead, try starting out with the things you don’t want to do. Getting them out of the way early means you won’t have to worry about them later.

If you have a lot to do in your routine, you could also spread out the things that you don’t want to do by putting easier, more enjoyable tasks in between the hard ones, so you aren’t bombarded with a bunch of things that you don’t like to do.

A good way to motivate yourself to get through the things you don’t want to do is to reward yourself. Let’s say that you have to study every day for an upcoming exam. You’ve already sorted out a time to be able to do it, you just don’t want to. How about after you’re done studying, you get to watch an episode of your favorite show. This gives you the incentive to do what you’re supposed to do.

Another thing you can do to stick to a routine is keep a checklist or a schedule. Keeping a list will help organize everything you have to do. Having a lot of responsibilities can be overwhelming, so it’s best to stay as organized as possible.

A schedule is helpful because it will help you to give yourself enough time to complete

your objectives. For example, if you need to be out of the house by eight in the morning, but have a morning routine that lasts about an hour and a half, you should probably wake up at six to give yourself enough time to complete the routine, with about thirty minutes to spare.

Although doing everything mentioned so far will help you stick to a routine, the best way to do it is to practice. Actually going through with the routine will not only get you used to what you need to do, but it will also let you fix any aspect that doesn’t work.

The only way to know if part of your routine doesn’t work is to go through with it. Eventually, you’ll be motivated enough to be able to follow your routine.

Parents use music, movies and tv to entertain their kids all of the time so that they can get errands done or when they don’t want to deal with their kids for a period of time. In some ways letting music, movies and tv raise the kids can be good but it can also be bad as well.

There are so many things that music, movies and tv can teach kids that parents don’t know how to teach their kids. It could be race and ethnicity, how to dress properly, gender, culture, relgion, adolescence, or how to tell between right and wrong.

Conversely, there are things in music, movies and tv that parents shouldn’t let their kids be interested in like swearing, drugs, smoking, vaping, sex, racism, weapons, alcohol and violence.

I was raised on media. My parents didn’t know how to engage in what I was interested in and struggled totalk about tough topics.

Parents would have to be careful with what their kids would listen to, watch on tv or what games they play because it has been proven that

kids can act out and mimic what they see on tv or what they see in the video games that they might play.

Not to mention that the stuff that music, movies and tv might promote and their kids might think that stuff might be ok to behave that way because of a celebrity they might admire.

For some issues, I would let my future kids listen to certain music, watch certain movies and watch certain tv shows because I would want my future kids to have good Christian values in life, know between what is right and what is wrong, how to know who is a good friend and who is a friend that might be a toxic one and how to be a good person in the crazy, divided nation that they’ll grow up in.

The key idea here is “influence.” Parents really have to think about what kind of influences they want their children to be exposed to.

Stem Cell Transplants Prevent Relapses of Most Common Childhood Cancer, Study Reveals Josh Barney Guest Writer jdb9a@virginia.edu

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Children and young adults who receive CAR T-cell therapy for the most common childhood cancer – acute lymphoblastic leukemia – suffer remarkably fewer relapses and are far more likely to survive when the treatment is paired with a subsequent stem cell transplant, a new study finds.

The research, with an average follow up of nearly five years, suggests that stem cell transplants offer long-term benefits for young patients who receive the cutting-edge immunotherapy. CAR T-cell therapy results in complete remission in 60%-100% of patients initially, but the relapse rate is high. However, among those who received a stem cell transplant after CARs, the relapse rate was less than 10% two years later.

“More than 50% of kids in other studies with a different CAR relapse, with the majority of them losing the target the CAR goes after,” said researcher Daniel “Trey” Lee, MD, a pediatric oncologist and Director of Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant and Immunotherapy at UVA Children’s and the UVA Cancer Center.

“Most of these kids have a single shot at this life-saving and paradigm-changing therapy called CAR T-cells. We should do all we can to maximize the chance for a cure, and right now that means a transplant after CAR therapy for most.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell

therapy takes a person’s own immune cells and genetically modifies them to make them more effective cancer killers.

The approach has shown high remission rates – up to 100% – 28 days after it is given to children and young adults with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. But a significant number relapse, the limited data available suggests. One study found that more than 40% had relapsed 13.1 months later.

To determine if stem cell transplants could help, the new study looked at outcomes in 50 children and young adults, ages 4 to 30. The median age was 13.5 years.

Among the 21 who received an allogenic stem cell transplant after CARs, only 9.5% had relapsed 24 months later. In comparison, all of those who did not receive a stem-cell transplant had relapsed.

“Even as impactful as CAR T-cell therapy is for children with relapsed leukemia, we now know that the best outcomes happen when the child undergoes a stem cell transplant afterwards,” Lee said. “Many parents turn to CAR T-cells to possibly avoid a stem cell transplant, and that is entirely understandable. But there is a window of opportunity after CARs to cure more of these incurable kids with a transplant; our study demonstrates this.” His hope for the future is for the field to be able to distinguish up front those who need a transplant and those who do not.

Ryan Miller Miller powered LHU track and field this past weekend at the Elliston open. Miller captured an individual win in the men’s 400 meter by recording a time of 49.87. Miller competed in the 200 meter race and recorded a strong time of 22.95. Additionally, Miller was part of the men’s Distance Medley Relay team that set a Hubert Jack Stadium record with a time of 10:40.10. Miller and the rest of the men’s Track and Field team will be back in action this Saturday at the Millersville Metrics meet.

Joaquina Orlandini Orlandini willed Lock Haven to a thrilling upset victory over #20 UMass this past week. Orlandini recorded nine saves and only allowed one goal against the Minutewomen.

Orlandini down the stretch made a series of spectacular saves including a breakaway save that kept Lock Haven in a tied game with Massachusetts. Orlandini also earned the A-10 defensive player of the week honors for her outstanding performance. Lock Haven Field Hockey will be back in action at home vs UMass this Saturday.

Softball sweeps Millersville Doug Spatafore Senior Director of Athletic Communications & Marketing dspatafo@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University softball team (3-11, 3-11 PSAC East) scored a total of 20 runs on 22 hits in a dominating Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader sweep of host Millersville University (8-6, 4-6 PSAC East) today.

Lock Haven won game one, 10-5 and the Bald Eagles completed the sweep of the Marauders with a dominating 10-2 victory in game two.

For LHU, the offense was steady throughout, but the Bald Eagles benefitted from lategame offensive surges in both outings today.

Leading the way at the plate was Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./ North Pocono) and Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua), who provided timely game-one home runs. A number of players stood out in each game at the plate as the Lock Haven bats rallied in the stretch innings.

Over the two-game PSAC East sweep today, Lock Haven totaled 20 runs on 22 hits, scoring an identical 10 runs on 11 hits in each victory.

Not to be outdone, pitching was key in both victories, thanks to the efforts of Schellhammer, Madison Waltman (Turboville, Pa./Warrior Image taken by: John Davern Run) and Kinley Gioglio (Stroudsburg, Pa./ Stroudsburg).

In game one, Lock Haven used a five-run seventh inning to break open the game. The two teams were tied 5-5 after six innings, but the late-game offensive surge from LHU proved too much for the home team as the Bald Eagles won 10-5.

Carpenter put the Bald Eagles up 2-0 in the top of the first when she hit a two-run home run to center with two outs. It marked her second home run in as many days as she continues to climb Lock Haven’s all-time top-10 list for home runs.

Schellhammer also homered in game one. Her home run in the top of the sixth put LHU up 5-1 and marked Lock Haven’s fifth home run in two days. The Bald Eagles homered three times yesterday in their doubleheader with Shippensburg.

Sydney Arrigale (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) sparked the big seventh inning for Lock Haven with a double that drove in three runs.

Riley McClellan (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) was 2-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs. Schellhammer went 2-for-4.

Waltman was solid in her start in the circle. Over 5 1/3 innings, she scattered three hits and struck out seven. Waltman carried a no-hitter into the fifth before getting into a bit of a jam. Gioglio came on and picked up the victory in relief.

In game two, Lock Haven led 3-2 after five, but the Bald Eagles broke open the scoring and put the game away in the sixth inning with six runs. LHU led 9-2 after six and added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as The Haven rolled to the 10-2 win.

Schellhammer went the distance in the circle, scattering five hits in the complete-game (7 inn.) win. She struck out three.

At the plate, McClellan went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Summer Peters (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double. Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Stefanie O’Grady (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. The game-one victory snapped a seven-game losing streak and the road-sweep gives Lock Haven major momentum heading into the Bald Eagles scheduled bye week.

It’s certainly been a busy stretch for Lock Haven. The Bald Eagles hosted Shippensburg yesterday in a PSAC East doubleheader and today’s action marked three PSAC East doubleheaders in four days for The Haven.

Apr. 02, 2021 Swimming takes first in Vulcan Invite

Doug Spatafore Senior Director of Athletic Communications & Marketing dspatafo@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University swimming team competed this weekend in the Virtual Vulcan Invitational. The Bald Eagles won the Invite by edging out East Stroudsburg, Millersville and California (Pa.).

Lock Haven scored 142 total team points across 14 events during the Invite. East Stroudsburg finished in second scoring a total of 129 points. Millersville and California (Pa.) where next in line scoring 97 and 91 points, respectively.

In the first event of the day LHU bested the four team field by finishing first and second in the 200yard medley relay. Madison Griffin (Douglasville, Pa./ Daniel Boone), Kacey Berardinelli (Boothwyn, Pa./ Archbishop John Carroll), Lauren Mummert (York, Pa./Northeastern) and Sol Asparria (Lima, Peru/Saint Marks College) took home first place with a time of 1:58.78. The second place team in the event featured Avery Mahoney (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain), Lily Arledge (Richwood, Ohio/River Valley), Loana Herrera-Tapia (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) and Kirsten Pugh (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) who finished their relay race in 1:59.23 to claim the top two spots for the Bald Eagles.

Lock Haven would take first and second again in the 100-yard backstroke. Berardinelli finished her race in 1:14.76 to take first, while Arledge turned in a solid time of 1:15.52 to grab the 1-2 finish for Lock Haven.

Mummert enjoyed a nice individual day in the pool besting the entire field in the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard IM. In the 200-yard butterfly Mummert finished the race in 2:17.97 beating the second place time by nearly 10 seconds. The 400-yard IM saw Mummert on top again when she turned in a formidable time of 4:58.45.

Schedule Update:

Following the Vulcan Invite, LHU head coach Brian Hein announced that the team would not compete next week (Saturday, April 3) in the weekly PSAC Virtual Series. The team will return to action on Saturday, April 10 in PSAC Virtual Series Week 6 action. The action on April 10 will serve as the final prep before the 2020-21 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships held in York, Pa.
