Biden signs $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill

President Biden signed a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill on Thursday, March 11. Before signing the bill, he said “This historic legislation is about rebuilding the backbone of this country, and giving people in this nation, working people, middle-class folks, the people who built this country a fighting chance.” The bill passed through the House of Representatives the day before Biden signed it, with all House Democrats and no House Republicans voting in favor of the bill. Republicans stated that the bill was unnecessary as COVID-19 vaccines are being distributed, but Democrats argued that the bill was needed to mitigate the pain caused by economic restrictions over the last year. According to CNBC, they also cited that the bill may slash child poverty. Included in the bill are $1400 stimulus checks that will go out to 90% of Americans, according to CNN. Families will be receiving another $1400 per child. The full amount goes to individuals earning less than $75,000 of annual income, and married couples that earn less than $150,000 combined. Anyone earning more than $80,000 or couples earning at least $160,000 will be ineligible to receive the stimulus check. The bill will also provide a $300 per week boost to unemployment insurance, and it will expand the child tax credit for a year, says CNBC. The legislation is also going to provide $350 bil-
lion to states, local governments, territories and tribes. The States and Washington D.C. will receive $195.3 billion, counties and cities will split $130 billion, tribes will get $20 billion and territories $4.5 billion. The bill provides $125 billion to K-12 public schools, in the hopes that they update their ventilation systems and implement social distancing in classrooms. Colleges will be receiving $40 billion, and, according to CNN, half of this must be used on emergency financial aid grants, and the rest can be used to help with lost revenue. The Emergency Injury Disaster Program, which provides low-interest loans from the Small Business Administration, will be receiving $15 billion. Small businesses that have been severely impacted will be given priority, specifically businesses with fewer than 10 employees. Restaurants and bars will be receiving $25 billion, with some being able to receive up to $10 million if they are eligible. Vaccine research and development also received $14 billion. This will also aid in the distribution and administration of the vaccines. Seven billion dollars was allocated toward hiring 100,000 healthcare workers, and $8.5 billion was given to struggling rural hospitals and healthcare providers. According to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, eligible Americans should have started receiving their stimulus checks last weekend.

As the United States hones in on its first anniversary of COVID related lockdowns, states have been grappling whether or not to continue their previously imposed restrictions and mask mandates. With decreasing COVID numbers and increasing vaccine availability, some states have decided to lift their statewide restrictions and mask mandates. Six governors have declared a complete lift of their statewide restrictions, allowing facilities to reopen at 100% occupancy. The affected states include Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Missouri, Montana, and Iowa. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced his state would fully reopen beginning March 10. He also lifted all statewide mask mandates effective the same date. Some states, such as Missouri, have had limited to no restrictions as early as the summer of 2020. As of March 16, 15 states have entirely eliminated mask mandates. These include Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida. Four states - Arizona, Kansas, Arkansas, and South Carolina - have limited mask mandates and only require them in certain situations. Despite some states officially ending mask mandates, individuals who feel more comfortable or have predisposed conditions, making them
more susceptible to COVID, may continue to wear masks. Critics of the lifted restrictions believe that the governors’ decisions are premature and would likely result in a spike of new cases, according to CNN. The Biden administration and officials have openly opposed these decisions and have warned against such economic reopenings, asking states to temporarily halt their plans. While several states are reopening at once, others are taking a more gradual approach. California plans to ease its lockdown restrictions on outdoor venues effective of April 1. After nearly a year of cancelled sporting events, concerts, and closed theme parks, California plans to reopen such outdoor venues to residents only while continuing to enforce mask mandates. Other states, like Colorado, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, are also gradually easing up on their statewide restrictions. However, mask mandates will still be in place. On March 15, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf announced his plans to lift capacity restrictions for businesses and gathering limits. Beginning April 4, restaurants, gyms, and entertainment facilities will be allowed to open up to 75% occupancy. Indoor gatherings will allow for 25% occupancy, and outdoor gatherings will be allowed a maximum capacity of 50%. At this point in time, Pennsylvanians will still be required to wear masks in public settings.

The crossover season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 gave viewers of the show so much to enjoy and tear up about. Warning---if you haven’t seen this show yet, please don’t read further to avoid spoilers! The episode picks up where two of the Grey-Sloan Memorial hospital doctors, Dr. Deluca and his sister are on the trail of a “supposed’ sex-trafficking kingpin. Dr. Deluca is also dealing with Bipolar disorder and his sister came along to make sure that what he was doing was real and not a ‘’manic episode’’. The two doctors are also in constant contact with the firefighters of Station 19 where the firefighters rescued two girls who were lured in by the same sex-trafficking kingpin the doctors were following to get arrested. As the doctors are following the kingpin, they are dealing with pandemic stereotypes: these two particular doctors are Italians, and we know from the real world that Italy had a massive amount of COVID cases that caused the country to shut down. This show also shows situations of racial profiling done by police officers with the firefighters being arrested for “assaulting a cop’’ which they were not. The firefighters were rescuing two little Black girls from a house that was owned by a white person. The two little girls set a fire in the basement of that house they were held at to draw attention to get them rescued.
Dr. Deluca catches up with the kingpin, and she ‘’blended’’ in with a crowd of people in masks. The kingpin caught on to him, and stabbed Deluca in the stomach. His sister catches up to him and sees that he is bleeding. The two doctors are off to the hospital via the ambulance that Station 19 has. The kingpin does get arrested immediately after stabbing the doctor. The group gets to the hospital, and the hospital staff had no idea why Deluca was the victim. The doctors do everything in their power to try and save Deluca, however he died. There is a part of the show, where Deluca sees Meredith for the first time in awhile, and just says “thank you’’. Meredith is still in an induced coma from complications from COVID-19. Deluca was a character that I had a huge soft spot for. He did admirable things but some things he did made you scratch your head. Any death on a show this popular, is rough. Catch Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday nights on ABC!

The pandemic has been hard for everyone. It has put a physical and maybe an emotional strain on everybody since it broke out. People have lost their jobs, people aren’t getting much of social life and everyone is stuck inside. The state of the world is bringing a lot of depression and who knows what this summer could look like. Here are some ways to have fun this summer during this pandemic. 1. Running through a sprinkler-On those hot days in the summer, it feels nice to run through a sprinkler to cool off. 2. Have a water balloon f ight-This will not only help you cool off, but it will be more fun than sitting inside and getting hotter. 3. Go for a socially distanced hike-On summer days it will be good to get out of the house and get some exercise to start to lose some weight from being stuck inside getting cabin fever. 4. Read a book-It will help you exercise mentally.
5. Swim at a lake-Pools may be off-limits but going to a lake is still allowed because lakes are open to the public. 6. Camp in the backyard-You may not be able to go on a real vacation but camping in the backyard is just as fun. 7. Take a virtual tour-Nowadays you can go on a virtual tour anywhere and it will be like you’re really there. 8. Have a party online or outside-Invite friends either online or to a park to have a party and socialize af ter being stuck inside. You need to have a social life too! 9. Have a virtual movie night-Get together with friends or with family and have a movie night socially distanced. 10. Take a f itness class-With being stuck inside, you can start to gain a little weight. So why not take a little weight off by taking an exerciseclass.

Biden’s Campagin Promises Annie Barnhart agb8459@lockhaven.edu Staff Writer What were you doing a year ago today? It's okay, go ahead and check your snapchat memories. Were you watching Tiger King in your sweats? Listening to President Trump tell us the ineffectiveness of masks and or the importance of them from opponent Joe Biden? Thinking back to a year ago, life was a lot different for all of us. Life seemed to just stop all of a sudden, and then, gradually, after many months begin again, but nowhere near the way we left it. We were promised 3 weeks of quarantine. Yet, here we are, over 365 days later. It's no secret that President Joe Biden made some hefty promises to us on his campaign journey to the White House. So the question on my mind and the minds of millions of Americans is if Joe Biden is keeping the promises he made to us. Where is our student debt relief? Where is the justice for hundreds of lives lost to racial injustice this last year alone? When will we be out of this pandemic? Here is a list of the promises kept by Joe Biden thus far. 1. Reverse family separate policies 2. Reverse the transgender military ban 3. Rejoin the world health organization 4. Immediately rescind the “muslim bans” 5. Restore the White House directorate for global health security All five of the promises above were set into place immediately following his inauguration in late January, which is no surprise. President Biden promised us that his first course of action would be fixing the mistakes of the Trump era. However, these were all put into action almost two full months ago, where is my $2,000 dollar stimulus I was promised? President Joe Biden signed $1.9 trillion in new coronavirus relief into law on March 11., which means $1,400 stimulus checks could start to reach Americans in the coming days and or have already started
f lowing in. Payments should go to about 159 million households across the US. The checks will be a maximum of $1,400 per dependent, or $2,800 per married couple.. Although, a wonderful sentiment, I can't help but think if the government really believes our struggles this past year will just be forgotten with a two payment system. On a more positive note, Biden as of March 7. Signed an Executive Order on Guaranteeing an Educational Environment Free from Discrimination on the Basis of Sex, Including Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity. This has been a huge topic of discussion for months now and serves a win for the democratic party. Regardless if you support Biden or not, no one wants to see our President fail our country. (although I can't speak for everyone) Every win should be celebrated. Big or small. We are all in this together.

Cardi B’s performance at this year’s Grammy Award show was not without controversy. It was revealing, provocative, and hypersexualized. I’ll admit I didn’t see the performance live, but I did see clips of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s performance. I was not impressed. Performers were dressed in very revealing clothes that were almost down to nothing. The dancing was graphic and reminisced of twerking. Someone was pole-dancing on a structure that looked like a part of a high heel. It was on par with Miley Cyrus’ performance with Robin Thick, which was rather cringe-worthy. If the short performance was ref lective of the entire show, I’m glad I missed the show. Women shouldn’t dress and dance like that. Women should have more respect for their bodies than then f launt around in outf its that would put the Rockettes to shame. Could you imagine watching that with your family. What if little kids saw the performance? What kind of a message would that send to them? Children mirror what they see. They will think it’s okay to dress indecently and dance inappropriately. This is a prime example
of referent power. Referent power is when people are inf luenced to behave in a similar manner as a leader or authority f igure in their lives. Women had to f ight for equal rights and to be respected and still struggle at times to be treated equally. How can women be respected when they’re dressing and performing to cater to the male gaze? It’s taking a few steps back for female empowerment. These women must have low self-esteem or don’t respect their bodies enough to cover up. I certainly wouldn’t let my kids dress or behave that way let alone watch stuff like that on tv. Performances like what was at the Grammys are what many women are doing now is supposedly a form of self-expression. It looks more like they don’t care about themselves enough and they will literally do anything to get the attention. Celebrity women who dress and dance that way completely disregard the value of modesty, and should consider what kind of values they are endorsing with their behaviors.

Mastillo led the way offensively for the LHU baseball team this past weekend. Mastillo tallied a .357 average to go along with one home run and four runs scored through four games. Mastillo belted a home run to deep leftfield that marked Lock Haven’s first home run of the season. On Saturday, Mastillo went three for four with three runs scored in Game 1 against Kutztown. Mastillo recorded eight putouts as well against Kutztown adding to an outstanding performance.
Good led the way for the LHU softball team during her collegiate debut week. Good batted .444, registering four hits in nine at bats and two RBIs. Good had a great performance against nationally-ranked West Chester, going two for four with two RBIs in Game 1. Later in the week, Good added to a standout performance by going two for two with a walk against Kutztown in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Good added five putouts to an already outstanding week.

NBA season update: Halfway there Thomas Kaikai Staff Writer tjk2774@lockhaven.edu With the NBA now passing their All-Star break, the season is now more than halfway done. Playoff seeding is starting to heat up and contenders are trying to make the big free agency moves and trades to make the push for the upcoming playoffs. The former Pistons PF/C, Blake Griffin, signed with the new powerhouse Nets squad. Griffin now joining the current second seeded Nets in the Eastern conference gives them the desired big man they need low in the post. Now they are the Vegas favorites to win the eastern conference. At the midseason update Joel Embiid has been the MVP front runner but suffered a knee injury on March 13 and is expected to miss two to three weeks. The Sixers are currently a half game ahead of the Nets for the first seed in the Eastern conference. Embiid’s teammate Ben Simmons is also the front runner for the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award, averaging 8 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 0.7 blocks per game. Coaches and players have been complementing Simmons on his game and believe he is the clear defensive player of the year. Lamelo Ball of the Hornets has been the front runner for Rookie of the year since taking over a starting role he is currently averaging 16/6/6 on 45 percent from the field. As of March, Jordan Clarkson is leading the running for 6th man of the year award averaging 15/3/2 on 44 percent shooting.

Field Hockey set for return to action, heads to La Salle Doug Spatafore Senior Director of Athletic Communications & Marketing dspatafo@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University field hockey team is set for a return to competition for their 2020-21 season today. Lock Haven will waste no time jumping into Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) action as the Bald Eagles head to La Salle Friday for a 3 p.m. contest. La Salle is 0-3 on the season after the Explorers opened their spring season on March 5. In the last meeting between Lock Haven and La Salle, way back on October 6, 2019, the Bald Eagles won, 1-0, on the road. Lock Haven standout Tia Judy (East Prospect, Pa./Homeschooled) scored the game’s only goal. LHU has won three straight games. Despite a limited schedule, the Bald Eagles are excited to open their spring 2021 schedule after the fall 2020 season was cancelled. Back in July, the A-10 announced the postponement of all scheduled fall contests in conferencesponsored sports and A-10 championships due to the continuing COVID-19 global pandemic. That announcement included field hockey, but part of the announcement also included the league’s intentions to conduct a competitive schedule for fall sports during the 2021 spring semester. This special 2020-21 season also gives LHU the opportunity to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the program’s first year of varsity field hockey back in 1945-46. To date, Lock Haven is scheduled to play six games this spring, starting with today’s match at La Salle. Five of the six scheduled contests are to be played vs. A-10 opponents and three of the scheduled games are set to played at home on Charlotte Smith Field. Following today’s contest at La Salle, LHU will get a home game as the Bald Eagles are set to host perennial conference power Saint Joseph’s on Sunday, March 28. Six of Lock Haven’s 11 wins came at home in 2019. The Bald Eagles other two home games are scheduled for April 2 vs. Towson and April 17 vs. La Salle.
The 2019 season also proved to be a special one for Lock Haven as it ended with the Bald Eagles securing a postseason berth. LHU capped an allaround impressive 2019 season with an 11-8 overall record. The Bald Eagles went 11-7 during the regular season and finished at 6-2 in Atlantic 10 play. During the regular season, Lock Haven recorded conference wins over Davidson, Richmond, La Salle, Virginia Commonwealth, Saint Louis and Saint Francis. The Bald Eagles finished the 2019 regular season on a roll, concluding the season with a four-game win streak. All four wins came by way of shutoutvictories, as Lock Haven outscored its opponents 11-0 in the final four games. In all, LHU won seven of its final eight games during the regular season, which included A-10 wins over La Salle, Virginia Commonwealth, Saint Louis and Saint Francis. The upset-minded Bald Eagles entered the 2019 Atlantic 10 Tournament as the No. 4 seed. The 2019 A-10 semifinal appearance marked Lock Haven’s first A-10 tournament appearance since 2014 and fourth overall since joining the A-10 in 2010.
