President interview: Plans for LHU and its students Cassandra Keller Sports Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu

Lock Haven University (LHU) along with two other universities, Mansfield and Bloomsburg, are undergoing an integration. Bashar Hanna, LHU’s current president interim, will also continue to hold his position as Bloomsburg’s president as part of this integration.

“What we want to try to do is make sure every opportunity is presented to our students so they can continue progressing toward the degree without delay,” said Hanna.

The integration will merge together the programs, faculty, and staff across the three universities. Continuation of programs and faculty at each of the universities will depend on the student enrollment trends at each of the campuses.

“I will work with our faculty union and our students and our staff to make sure that where our students want to study, whatever major our students are studying, that as long as that enrollment is appropriate, we are not going to eliminate majors.”

Concerns of sexual harassment aligations against Hanna have arisen from an article pub-

lished in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

“At no point in my career have I ever, ever sexually harassed anyone,” Hanna said when asked to address these concerns. “I grew up with a mother who reminded me every day as a teenager to treat every girl I meet the same way I would want my sisters treated by men.”

Hanna has had a passion for education from a young age.

“I’ve always admired teachers.

The teachers and the mentors I’ve had in my life who always made a difference was really what interested me in going into education.”

Hanna plans to listen to students, faulty, and staff to make decisions for the university.

“This is one thing I will promise you that every decision we make is going to be grounded in what is in the best interest of our students today and our students tomorrow.”

Looking into the fall, Hanna hopes to resume classes face-toface and looks forward to meeting students.

“I look forward to this pandemic being in the rearview mirror and having all the students back on campus in the fall so we can pick up where Lock Haven left off before the pandemic and continue forging forward together.”

LHU students team up with CDC to conduct facial covering research on campus Julie Stellfox Media Contact jms833@lockhaven.edu

Lock Haven University was selected as one of 55 colleges and universities to partner with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the PA Department of Health for the MASCUP! Mask Adherence at Colleges and Universities Project, “Observing Mask Use at IHEs – 2021 Spring Semester.”

The Health Science Club is taking the lead under the direction of Dr. Jennifer Rudella and Dr. Beth McMahon. McMahon serves as COVID coordinator for the university as part of the COVID-19 Institutional Response Team.

The Psychology Club has joined under the direction of Dr. Cheryl Newburg.

Student researchers were trained and certified by the CDC to collect data and received approval through LHU’s institutional review board.

Students will collect data throughout the spring 2021 semester and the results will be published by the CDC and PA Department of Health and provide opportunity for LHU student researchers to publish or present at local, state and national venues.

“This national study provides LHU students with experience in research that will help drive disease prevention, control and health promotion on our campus and throughout the U.S.,” McMahon said.

One LHU student researcher said he is proud to be a part of the research team and the opportunity is giving the students a taste of what real public health research might look like in their professional careers.

The CDC required the student researchers to not reveal their identities until the research has been completed.

“Personally, I find this research very rewarding and helps me to feel like I am making a difference in our ongoing battle against the COVID-19 virus both in our campus community and worldwide,” the pre-physician assistant junior said.

“This research opportunity has also shed some light on my career goals; I have always wanted to work in the sciences and more recently as a PA, but being able to conduct research and have my personal findings utilized has been an amazing experience and might be something that I pursue in my future.”

The information gathered during the study will help to provide an understanding of how well colleges and their surrounding communities are promoting proper face covering use and also help them implement and assess strategies to increase the proportion of people who use facial coverings correctly and ultimately mitigate COVID-19.

Paramount+ is a new streaming service, that is also available in app form, for movies, tv and live tv. Some might even compare it to Hulu considering their similarities in streaming choices. Supposedly, the program was originally going to be called “CBS All Access” until executives made the switch and chose “Paramount+” instead.

This new service gives you access to so many television networks to browse through like Nickelodeon, BET, Comedy Central, CBS, MTV and the Smithsonian Channel.

For Nickelodeon shows, there are so many options it seems as though almost every show from the network over the years is on it. It features great oldies like “Catdog”, “Rugrats”, “The Amanda Show”, “Fanboy and Chumchum”, “Spongebob Squarepants”, “Drake and Josh”,“Zoey 101”, “The Fairly Oddparents”, “Blues Clues”, etc. while also featuring some of the newer shows for today’s youth like “The Thundermans” and “Henry Danger”.

For BET, I’m afraid it’s a short list which is really odd because they do have some great choices but the streaming service only opted for “Everybody Hates Chris”, “Real Husbands of Hollywood”, “Sister, Sister”, “Moesha”, and “Being Mary Jane.” Mind you, most of these shows are already on Netflix for way cheaper than what Paramount+ is offering.

As for Comedy Central, there is an enormous amount of laughs to go around as they add most of their collection featuring gems like “Hot in Cleveland”, “Younger”, “Reno 911”, “Tosh.o”, “Chappelle’s Show”, “Key & Peele”, “Crank Yankers”, and all of the Comedy Central roasts.

CBS made it into the platform, offering some of the best shows they have to offer such as “NCIS”, “Young Sheldon”, “NCIS: Los Angeles’’, “The Good Wife”, “Mom”, etc. but they do have some competition. MTV has definitely made its presence known with their own impressive selections with options such as “Teen Mom 2”, “The Real World”, “Rupaul’s Drag Race”, “Ridiculousness”, “Jersey Shore”, “Love & Hiphop: Atlanta”, “Daria”, “Love & Hiphop: New York”, “Silent Library”, “Girlcode”, “MTV Cribs”, “Basketball Wives”, “Teen Mom 3”, “Love & Hiphop: Hollywood”, and “Behind the Music.”

For the Smithsonian Channel, Paramount+ wanted everyone to get a taste of education no matter where or what it was about. This made their collection one of the most impressive I’ve ever seen a streaming service offer. It ranges from wonderful picks such as “Building Star Trek,” and “Secrets” to “Stories from the Vaults” and “America in Color”. Just looking at the selections makes me excited to learn more about the world and its history.

For movies, their collection is also most impressive as it features many diverse genres and great movies like “9/11: Day that Changed the World,” “9/11: Stories in Fragments,” “The Adventures of Tintin,” “Amelie,” “Aviator,” “Babel,” “Beowulf,” “Best Player,” “Big Time Movie,” “Black Beauty,” “Blue Hawaii”. So, if you find yourself in need of a change or a brand new streaming service altogether, then Paramount+ might just be the website/app for you.

With movie theaters slowly starting to reopen to the public, what should we know to stay safe during our next trip to the silver screen? Let’s review.

What are cinemas doing to keep movie-goers safe? Movie theaters are pushing paperless tickets.

Instead of arriving at the theater and attempting to buy your tickets from the window, they are either recommending, or requiring, all guests to purchase tickets ahead of time online. Of course, cinemas are also requiring the use of masks and social distancing. The good news is, you can still sit next to your family, friends, or that special someone, but groups will be distanced from each other. Movie theaters are asking guests to wash hands frequently, and to visit their hand-sanitizing stations throughout the building. Theaters are proud to announce enhanced cleaning protocols including air filtration and sanitizing of all surfaces from open to close. Theaters have committed to a full cleaning of each cinema room between shows...something that should always be done anyway, right? Probably the biggest noticeable change is the significantly reduced capacity during showings. Instead of being in a crowded, full theater like we are used to, what you’ll experience now is an auditorium that has far more empty seats than occupied ones...something I feel makes for a much better movie-viewing experience.

Most theaters are still serving concessions, but will likely have a modified menu. Communal foods designed for sharing have been eliminated in favor of personal items, and many theaters will be accepting cards only; no cash.

What can we do to make this a safe and pleasant experience? Most importantly...if you feel unwell, stay home! If movie theaters have any chance to remain open, we all have to abide by this first rule.

Purchase your tickets ahead of time using mobileticketing; who wants to stand in line in the cold at the box-office window anyway? Wash your hands and sanitize every chance you get. Wear your mask,

even in the dark theater when nobody's looking!

Something else we can do as consumers is to look for movie theaters displaying the Cinema Safe logo. What is this brand about? Good question. The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) commissioned the program known as Cinema Safe, intended to make the safety and health of guests and employees the number one priority in movie theater operations across the United States. According to cinemasafe.org, this alliance is made up of over 430 companies with over 3,200 locations and includes brands such as AMC, Regal, and Cinemark. The full list of theaters participating in this program is available on their website. Also, keep in mind that cinema regulations regarding reopening and operational standards are governed by individual states. As of now, all U.S. states have allowed theaters to reopen. However, a few states have allowed only certain regions to reopen, including California, Oregon, New Mexico, New York, and Hawaii. Pennsylvania is currently permitting indoor theaters to remain operational at 15% capacity per screening. PA currently has the lowest operating capacity in the entire country, whereas most states have adopted a 50% capacity allowance. With this in mind, you’ll definitely want to purchase your tickets well in advance of your next movie outing.

Planning a COVID Spring Break Tess English tae7002@lockhaven.edu Online Manager Lock Haven University opted to take away spring break and give students an extra week of summer to help deal with COVID-19 restrictions on campus. This has left a vacation-sized hole in some students’ hearts. Spring break is a pillar and without that mental break for students, everything feels blah. Here a few ways to squeeze in a little spring break into your March routine.

Take a weekend for yourself. Request off work, clear your school schedule, and have a little date with yourself.

Sleep in, eat well and don’t do any chores if possible. It’s not the long rest of a week vacation or, but every little bit helps.

This will be a great chance to catch up on your shows or finish the book you’ve been reading.

Have a spa day. Treat yourself to the works: fruit-infused water, a mud-mask, the robe, aromatherapy, and good vibes.

A little self-care can go a long way in stress relief. Besides having a spa day is low-key, and you can do it in the comfort of your own home.

Take a virtual tour. Since going out-of-state is a bit of a no-go right now, try visiting a new place online. You’d be surprised how many places you can go from the comfort of your dorm. Take a trip to Paris, and see the Louvre. Check out the Houston Zoo and to see some cute animals. The National Aquarium has a full 360 experience that showcases all the floors of the building. If you’re missing Disney take a peek at one of its many virtual tours. It’s all the fun of the theme park, but with none of the lines!

Another great way to get the spring break experience while social distancing is to schedule some virtual hangouts.

You can do a Netflix/Hulu Party and stream your favorite shows with a friend. Schedule some game time with a friend.

Whether you playing “PUBG” or getting some “Among us” in, it’s a great way to blow off steam with your buddies.

Listen to some new TV, film, and music. Emerge yourself into another culture’s media. Struggling in Spanish? Try some Telemundo. Need a little extra help in French? Watch “La Chocolat.” Missing the beaching the vibes? Listen to some Caribbean music. Immersing yourself in a different culture’s media can be a great way mini-mental vacation from home.

Racism in Children’s Books Cassie Keller Sports Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Racism and similar such issues have been at the forefront of everyone’s mind since the death of George Floyd back in May of last year. As the black lives matter movement has grown and progressed, people have been looking critically at everything from statues to the media that children of today see. Several books by Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, will not be reprinted over such issues.

Frankly, it seems stupid. I will admit that I am slightly partial to Geisel’s books as they were a large part of my childhood, but putting those feelings aside it still seems rash. I say it is stupid becasue there is much more to the issue of stopping the print of these books.

I do not think books that have such racial imagery should be published today, however, Geisel’s books are examples of the kinds of problems rooted in racism. Hiding them by refusing to reprint them is basically trying to hide the fact that such imagery was used in America’s history. When we hide those examples, it gets easier and easier to pretend that those things don’t exist today.

Instead we should point these things out to our children and teach them about it. Not just show them it or hide from them, but to use those examples to educate the future generations on the racism generations before them struggled with and to teach them to be better instead of letting them make our mistakes. But I guess to do that, we’d have to admit we made the mistakes in the first place.

I can’t say I know the racial imagery that is in those books since I haven’t read the particular books that have been shelved. However, people need to realize when those books were made. Out of the six books that will no longer be reprinted, five of them were published in the 1950s or earlier.

That is important to note because the civil rights movement didn’t start until 1955 ending in 1968. Those five books were published in a time of segregation when people of color weren’t treated equally (to say the least).

As a society we need to recognize what that looked like. Not to mention, how casual racism was to the point of finding its way into children’s publications.

This can be an opportunity for education. If that seems preposterous, just remember kids in middle school still read “Huckleberry Finn,” but dissecting that can of worms is a whole other article for a different time.

Too Many Streaming Services?

According to TechJury, 65% of Americans still pay for cable tv, whereas 69% of U.S. adults use streaming services. The biggest reason is that streaming networks produce original content exclusive to its service. What happens when you find new shows to watch on multiple streaming services? Do you pay for them all, knowing that you won’t watch every show on the platform, or do you sacrifice one streaming service for the other?

There is an abundance of streaming services, but too many to be able to afford all of them. I understand the logic behind companies creating their platforms to stream their shows, but eventually, everything is going to be spread so thin that people are just buying individual tv channels. Many Netflix viewers enjoyed Disney productions, but then Disney pulled its content from the service many were left now needing to pay for an additional streaming service to have access to Disney works or chose between the two options. CBS and NBC already have their own platforms with Paramount+ and Peacock, respectively. While these also have original content in addition to access to their cable shows, these are basically digital tv channels.

Another problem with the number of streaming services is the fact that nobody is going to watch every show

on a platform. Some people may only want to watch one show, but they’ll have to pay for the entire service because the show they want to watch isn’t available anywhere else.

It’s inconvenient for consumers who don’t want to pay for another streaming service. What might start to happen is that streaming services will start to fail because nobody wants to buy another one. A good example of this is Quibi. Quibi was a streaming platform exclusively for your phone. It launched in 2020 and ran for six months before shutting down. While there were many other reasons behind this, such as it being exclusive to mobile devices, the content it provided received generally positive reviews.

This shows that people will choose to sacrifice content that may enjoy, instead of cost a new streaming service The oversaturation of streaming services isn’t going to make people buy every new platform that enters the market, it’s going to discourage people from seeking out new content, which in turn will cause some platforms to fail. In theory, a company might think that organizing its content into one place is a good idea because fans will want it, but I think people would rather sacrifice one service for another to avoid adding another streaming service to their monthly payments.

2022 Winter Olympics boycott controversy Kerri Hoover Ad/Design Manager & News Editor kah4338@lockhaven.edu Individuals and human rights activist groups from around the world are calling for a boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics to protest against China’s recent human rights abuses.

The next Winter Olympic Games are currently scheduled for Feb. 4-20, 2022 in Beijing, China. The events will also be held in two additional Chinese competitive zones: Zhangjiakou and Yanqing.

After winning the bid for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games on July 31, 2015, Beijing is set to become the first world city to host both summer and winter editions of the Games.

However, with a recent peak in human rights violations within the country, a controversy has stirred across the globe suggesting whether or not China deserves to host the Games.

Supporters of the Winter Olympics boycott include over 180 human rights organizations as well as several politicians from western countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Many of the individuals - Tibetans, Uighers, and residents of Hong Kong - in support of the boycott are persecuted, minority ethic groups residing in China.

The main reason for the boycott stems from the numerous human rights abuses that China is alleged to have committed in recent months.

Some of them include forced labor, the disembodiment of religious freedoms of Muslim and Christian minority groups, and the detention of individuals in concentration camps. Contiues on page 15.

Other reasons for the boycott include political and safety concerns. Western politicians, such as Florida representative Mike Waltz, support the 2022 Winter Olympic boycott as an act to protest against China’s “brutal dictatorship” and suppressive censorship policies. Furthermore, some individuals are hesitant to join the Winter Olympic celebration based on the continuous uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic.

While some individuals and organizations are calling for a complete boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics, others are requesting a location change. On Feb. 15, Waltz filed a resolution requesting the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) transfer the location of the Winter Olympics.

The reason for relocation as stated in the resolution is as follows: “Hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics Games in the [People’s Republic of China] PRC, where organized atrocities in the XUAR are ongoing; where the freedoms of Hong Kong’s citizens are being trampled; where the fundamental right to worship is brutally persecuted; and in the wake of the ongoing global devastation from COVID-19; would be immoral, unethical and wrong.”

Among the biggest critics of the 2022 Winter Olym-

pic controversy are the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the USOPC. Members of the IOC oppose the boycott because of its “ineffectiveness” to impact global and governmental issues. “[Boycotting the 2022 Winter Olympics is] a gesture that we know will have no impact whatsoever.

The Games are not Chinese Games, the Games are the IOC Games. The decision on hosting is not made with a view to signalling approval of a government policy,” said Candian IOC member Dick Pound in an interview with the BBC. Other arguments against the boycott suggest the negative consequences that the event’s cancellation will have. The USOPC advised against the boycott in a statement issued on Feb. 4 stating its direct and negative impact on athletes. Others fear the boycott will further damage foreign relations between the United States and China.

While summer editions of the Olympic Games have been boycotted before - most notably in the United States and the U.S.S.R during the Cold War - with direct opposition from major Olympic planning committees, as of now there does not appear to be an unprecedented Winter Olympic boycott in sight.

LHU swim team returns to competition Andrew Reedy Graduate Assistant bnr888@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University swimming team will make its return to the pool this Saturday, March 13 in the first-of-five virtual meets. This Saturdays meet will represent the official start of the 2020-21 season for the LHU swim team. Lock Haven intends to swim each of their five virtual meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday throughout the five-week season.

As you might expect, this season will look a little different than in years past. The Bald Eagles will swim in a total of five virtual meets spanning the months of March and April. Lock Haven will still be competing against the same Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) member institutions however each race will be held from their respective home venues.

Full meet results and recap will not be available until the Monday after the previous week to allow all PSAC universities the opportunity to compete.

After losing only one athlete to graduation, the Bald Eagles are equipped to make some waves in the pool. Nine different swimmers qualified for the 2019 PSAC Championships and of those nine, eight of them will return for Lock Haven.

Mikaela Clemson (Albury, Australia/Albury), Lauren Mummert (York, Pa./Northeastern) and Sol Asparria (Lima, Peru/Saint Marks College) all return to the pool for Lock Haven coming off of their respective individual PSAC qualifying times.

Clemson, Mummert and Asparria each qualified for the PSAC Championships back in 2019 in various events. Clemson qualified in the 50 and 100yard freestyle, Mummert in the 200-yard butterfly, 400-yard IM and 1650-yard freestyle while Asparria qualified in the 50-yard freestyle.

In addition to the three individual PSAC qualifiers, a number of returning swimmers qualified by way of relay teams.

Lily Arledge (Richwood, Ohio/River Valley), Madison Griffin (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone), Kandace Loup (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), Elizabeth Lyden (Montrose, Pa./Montrose Area) and Kirsten Pugh (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) all participated in the 2019 PSAC Championships on Bald Eagle relay teams.
