Virtual townhall: Integration process

Charles Patterson and Bashar Hanna, the presidents of Mansfield, Lock Haven, and Bloomsburg universities, held a virtual town hall meeting with the communities to address concerns regarding the integration of the three universities on Feb. 24.

Patterson said, “[The town hall meeting] is another example of how we intend to keep all of our stakeholders, our students as well as our faculty, staff, and communities updated on the progress we are making with the integration.”

Currently, the implementation plan is being developed in order for the integration to continue to progress. The development includes four steps: Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) accreditation, U.S. Department of Education and the Office of Postsecondary Education regulator approval, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) approval, and other relevant accreditations.

The MSCHE and NCAA accreditations and approvals are especially important as the MSCHE

accreditation certifies a university meets the standards for a college degree. The NCAA approval allows the universities to keep their individual teams. Patterson said, “If all of these are accomplished in step, we will see this integration occur, we will see this new university come into being.”

Programs offered at the different universities will become enrollment based in regards to which universities involved in the integration will continue to offer certain programs. Hanna said, “You, the students, are guiding us by which majors you’re studying as to which majors will exist on what campus.”

The integration goals are to grow enrollment through consolidating the universities to offer more to the students while controlling costs. Patterson said, “By doing something among the triad of institutions that better meets the needs of students, we are doing that to control costs and grow our revenue at the same time.”

U.S. House of Representatives vote to pass Equality Act Levi Deitz Copy Editor lwd6487@lockhaven.edu The U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of the Equality Act of 2021 on February 25. The bill was passed by a vote of 224-206, with three house Republicans voting with all of the house Democrats.

This is the fourth time that the Equality Act has been proposed to the House in its modern form, though the bill has been introduced multiple times since the first time in 1974. Although this is the fourth time being proposed, it is the second time the House has voted to pass it, the first being back in 2019. The Senate has never voted on the bill.

The aim of the bill is to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity on a federal level.

If passed, the bill would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include the prevention of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in the areas of housing and employment.

Currently, there are no laws outlawing discrimination of LGBTQ+ people in 27 states, according to the Human Rights Campaign.

The Equality Act would extend the anti-discrimination coverage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include public accommodations, such as transportation services and retailers, in addition to housing and employment.

For example, businesses would be unable to refuse service to LGBTQ+ people, in the same way that they cannot refuse service to people based on race.

Supporters of the bill argue that it will extend equal protection to those who are not covered by the Civil

Rights Act of 1964. The main sponsors of the bill are Rhode Island Representative David Cicilline and Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley.

When arguing for the bill, Cicilline said “The LGBT community has waited long enough” and “The time has come to extend the blessings of liberty and equality to all of Americans regardless of who they are and who they love.”

Opponents of the bill argue that the it will infringe on the religious beliefs of those who oppose LGBTQ+ lifestyles.

One detractor, Douglas Laylock, a law professor at the University of Virginia, told NPR that the bill was unnecessary after the ruling of the Supreme Court in Bostock v. Clayton County last year. The ruling in Bostock vs Clayton County protects employees against discrimination because they are gay or transgender, but it does not protect in other areas, such as housing discrimination.

In order for the bill to become law, the Senate would need at least 60 votes. The Senate is currently divided between 50 Republicans and 50 Democrats, with all Democrats expected to be in favor of the bill. This means 10 Republican votes will be needed for the bill to pass.

President Biden has expressed support for the bill, stating in a press release on Feb. 19, “Every person should be treated with dignity and respect, and this bill represents a critical step toward ensuring that America lives up to our foundation values of equality and freedom for all.”

The Muppets have been loved by many children and a true staple for kids since forever, bringing many laughs and loving memories of fun times to the entire world. Now, if you wish to reprise your childhood moments, then you may have your chance as “The Muppets” have been added to their forever home on Disney+.

In recent news, a few episodes of “The Muppets” have been hit with a content warning for negative stereotypes.

According to BBC News, they claim that “the show includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures.” They also added the fact that there was a confederate flag in the episode where Johnny Cash was a guest star.

Other than Johnny Cash, some of the other episodes with a disclaimer had Steve Martin, Peter Sellers, Marty Feldman, Joan Baez, Cleo Laine, Spike Milligan, Debbie Harry and Kenny Rogers as other influential guest stars.

The Disney disclaimer said “rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now.” This is exactly how future companies and corporations should answer to any negative content they may have produced in the past or prevent any future backlashes.

According to the LA Times, the warning refers to negative depictions of people from other cultures including Native Americans and those from the Middle East. In response to all the negative rumors about their entertaining “family friendly” content, disclaimer warnings have been added to

other Disney movies such as “Aladdin”, “Peter Pan”, “Lady and the Tramp”, “The Jungle Book”, “Swiss Family Robinson”, “The Aristocats” and “Dumbo”.

The literary and cinematic re-assessment was prompted by the protests from the Black Lives Matter movement last summer and has sparked debate over programs such as “Fawlty Towers,” “Gone with the Wind,” “Little Britain” and “Bo’ Selecta.” Back in the 70’s, the Muppets used to have a black muppet named Roosevelt Franklin. Disney had quite an issue with him because at first the puppet’s skin was too dark so they lightened him up. Unfortunately, that was also very problematic as eventually the puppet of Roosevelt Franklin became disposable.

Quite fascinating, really, that back then, if something on TV was offensive, they got rid of it completely. Whereas today, they can just put a content warning on either a show or a movie but never get rid of anything, only wanting to warn their audiences instead of trying to educate their audiences, especially children, about these issues.

In today’s reality, people are getting so offended by the littlest things which in turn raises a lot of issues. Now, they are taking away the title from Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head because they want gender neutral stuff. A few Dr. Seuss books are being questioned as well for a few issues. Seems as though our childhood might not be as innocent as we thought.

Kerri Hoover kah4338@lockhaven.edu Ads/Design/News Editor After mass confusion and a near two-year wait, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures finally announced on Feb. 24 the official title for the third Spider-Man movie.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” is the confirmed name for the Marvel-Sony Spider-Man trilogy. Similar to the previous films, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, the third one will also incorporate the word ‘home’ into its title.

The title was revealed Wednesday during a brief 25-second video clip on social media. The video featured actors Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon, as they teased Holland’s tendency to spoil upcoming films. It concluded with a zoomed-in shot of a whiteboard featuring the movie’s official title written largely in the center, surrounded by dozens of fake, crossed-out names.

The reveal came a day after Holland, Zendaya, and Batalon each shared fake movie titles across their social media accounts, leaving fans confused as to the actual movie title.

Some of the teased titles included “Spider-Man: HomeWrecker”, “Spider-Man: Home Slice”, and “Spider-Man: Phone Home”. While these were fake, the pictures posted by the actors in addition to the imposter titles were real, firstlook images into the third Spider-Man movie.

The movie will be set in the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the debut of several new Marvel films and television shows including “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, “Black Widow”, “Loki”, and “Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings”.

Prior to the movie’s title release, Marvel and Sony confirmed on July 23, 2020 that its new release date will be Dec. 17. This was the second release date change within the past year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of now, the movie will only be available in theatres.

Although, there has yet to be an official movie trailer, rumors have surfaced regarding a potential trailer release date. Based on previous trailer releases unveiled roughly six months before hitting theatres, fans can guesstimate the trailer for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will be released sometime in June or July. However, this has not been confirmed.

The plot and full cast list for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” also has not been confirmed. While Holland, Zendaya, and Batalon will be returning to play their roles of Peter Parker/ Spider-Man, M.J., and Ned, it is still up in the air whether actors such as Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will appear, reprising their roles as Spider-Man from the original and Amazing Spider-Man movie series. However, it has been confirmed by Marvel producer Kevin Feige that Benedict Cumberbatch will appear as Doctor Strange to replace Peter Parker’s former mentor, Iron Man. With that being said, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” will connect to the Doctor Strange sequel, “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness” set to release in March 2022.

Spring is right around the corner and that means warm weather, easter and being able to be outside exercising and doing fun activities.

One of the best parts of spring is the warm weather. It’s been cold for so long that we need some warmer weather so that we can go outside and exercise af ter being stuck inside because of COVID. A problem with being stuck inside is that most of us aren’t getting any exercise and we’re not getting the vitamin D that we need from the sun.

Many are missing the outdoor hangouts that are more feesabile in the warmer weather.

Spring is also agreat time for fun outdoor activities like water bloon f ights! It’s perfect for for and lavish outdoor actvies without the summer heat being too much! Plus there tends to be less sun burn for some in the spring time.

In addition, Spring allows for the only opportunity to have an easter egg hunt! A free pass to get round up family or friends and have spirited competion. Although it will be intersting to see how social distancing Easter Egg hunting will be this year or if it will happen at all.

This brings us to another key fun point of spring, Easter! While some chose to celebrate securaly most use it as time to teach the Christan belief about his death and rising back from the dead three days later. Many have found memories of church this time of year because the feastives tend to be as big as Christmas.

Should Children Be Reading Dr. Suess?

Six of Dr. Seuss’s books aren’t being published anymore because they have racist images. Those books are “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” “If I Ran the Zoo,” “McElligot’s Pool,” “On Beyond Zebra!,” “Scrambled Eggs Super!,” and “The Cat’s Quizzer.”

An example of what the imagery contains can be found in “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” where there is an Asian person that is portrayed wearing a conical hat, holding chopsticks, and eating from a bowl. The book “If I Ran the Zoo,” has a picture of two bare-footed African men wearing grass skirts with their hair tied up.

The National Education Association, which founded Read Across America Day in 1998, has always aligned the day with Dr. Seuss’s birthday for several years and encouraged children to have a more diverse reading list.

School districts are moving away from the Dr. Seuss books and prompting schools just outside Washington D.C. to spread rumors that they were banning the books entirely.

Taking Dr. Seuss out of the curriculum and ban-

ning his books might hinder other generations from learning some of the other great lessons Dr. Suess has to offer. “The Sneetches and Other Stories,” has a strong message to children be inclusive of others who look different than us because, in the end, we’re all apart of the human race.

Enough is enough, adults are always telling children what they can and can’t read because children don’t know how to filter what they should or shouldn’t read. Children should be taught by their parents how to filter out inappropriate reading material. There should also be a value of the freedom for children to express themselves when they read a book. I want to read Dr. Seuss’s books to my kids one day so that I can teach them the values that Dr. Seuss taught me when I was growing up. I want my future kids to live in a world where they are allowed to express themselves, to be creative, to not be afraid to explore new things, to be imaginative, and to understand that they can do anything they want as long as they set their minds to whatever they want to do and wherever they want to go.

Of course, there probably won’t be many or traditional events being held to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, but there are still lots of ways to get into the spirit!

An of ten underrated portion of St. Patrick’s Day is the opportunity to jam to some classic Irish tunes.

While these tunes are not only catchy, but it also has a rich histor y of the culture that began af ter the British conquered and banned the Irish native tongue. Music became a way for the Irish to remember their heritage and culture. Additional fun fact: listening to Irish music has a rebellious streak as Queen Elizabeth I once outlawed it and ordered Irish musicians to be hanged on the spot according to an article published by history.com. Put on an Irish music playlist to help set the St. Patty’s Day mood.

Another fun way to celebrate is to enjoy some traditional Irish cuisine. A few common classics are boxty (potato pancakes), Irish soda bread, Dublin coddle, and corn beef with cabbage and potatoes. Thankfully the internet is full of great recipes from Pinterest, Youtube videos, and google searches alike to f ind the dish perfect for you.

Virtually attend a St. Patrick’s Day parade. St. Louis’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade is going up online at irishparade.org, and it’s just one of many!

Last, but certainly not least, tr y to watch a bit of Irish Culture. A recommended way to get his watch some Irish dancing like Riverdance or Irish step dancing. Although dance doesn’t appeal to you, try watching Irish f ilms and television. Tr y “Wild Mountain Thyme” for a current romantic drama, “The Young Offenders” for comedy, “Derr y Girls” another comedy, but with strong female leads, and “The Hole in the Ground,” for horror.

Women’s History Month Ian MacGregor itm9315@lockhaven.edu Staff Writer Did you know that every year in March we celebrate Women’s History Month in the United States? The purpose of this important month-long celebration of women is to reflect on the efforts, contributions, and accomplishments of women in history but to also ensure we continue to create an equitable and inclusive world for all people.

To better understand and appreciate all this month stands for, as is typically the case, we have to take a look backwards at our history. Women’s History Month actually started off as Women’s History Week. In 1978, a forward-thinking school in the district of Sonoma, California designed and implemented a weeklong celebration acknowledging major contributions of women to society, culture, and history. These original Women’s History Weeks included essay contests, student presentations, and a festive parade in downtown Santa Rosa. Important contributions by women in history including Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Amelia Earhart, and Sandra Day O’Connor were revisited and reflected upon during these community-sponsored events.

The concept of this important celebration began to quickly catch on and spread through communities across the United States. In 1980, the National Women’s History Project (now called the National Women’s History Alliance) lobbied Congress for national recognition and by February of that year, President Carter officially declared the week of March 8th as National Women’s History Week. Seven years later, in 1987, this same group of crusaders successfully campaigned to get the entire month of March to be officially declared as National Women’s History Month.

If you think this story only goes back about 40 years,

then you’re missing over half the history. The month of March wasn’t selected at random for celebrating women’s achievements and contributions, but instead, coincides with International Women’s Day celebrated around the world on March 8th. The timeline of this globally celebrated day to honor women dates all the way back to 1911 in Denmark. A few years later just before the start of World War I, March 8th was officially and globally named International Women’s Day. Over the next few decades, this important day continued to evolve as more countries began to take-part and in 1975, the United Nations celebrated this event for the first time.

According to International-Women’s-Day.com, by 2000 the movement had grown quiet, despite there being a long way to go towards gender parity and so in 2001, a platform was launched to re-energize the campaign. Every year, a new campaign theme is launched based on global topics which have included Pledge for Parity, Press for Progress, Be Bold for Change, The Gender Agenda, and this year’s theme Choose to Challenge.

The theme this year encourages everybody, women and men, to challenge gender bias and inequities, to celebrate achievements of women, question stereotypes, and to create an inclusive world. According to the National Women’s History Alliance, celebrating both International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month gives us the chance to retell history and positively change the future by giving all people the power and inspiration to succeed. 1-2-3 finish powers women’s cross country to victory Doug Spatafore Senior Director of Athletic Communications & Marketing dspatafo@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University women’s cross country team swept the top three individual finishes and the Bald Eagles powered their way to victory as they hosted the 2021 Winter XC Invite. The meet marked the opening event for the team’s spring semester season and the Bald Eagles wasted little time in getting to work with some fast times this afternoon.

Behind the 1-2-3 finish, LHU recorded 37 points and soared by the five-team field. The event on Feb. 27 was held on Lower Creek Road in Castanea, Pennsylvania.

Standout Laurel Moyer (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) bested the 47-women field in the 5K road race with a time of 17:35.1.

Cadie Kiser (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) was second with a time of 18:25.7 and Elaina

Klinger (Danville, Pa./Danville) competed the sweep by taking third overall (18:42.3).

The powerful front-running trio help the Bald Eagles (37 team pts.) distance themselves from the field and LHU topped second-place Gannon by 26 points.

Karlee Noel (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) and Morgan Perry (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) rounded out the Bald Eagles’ top-five finishers today, thanks to solid efforts. Noel was 15th overall with a time of 19:34.8 and Perry was 16th in 19:37.5.

Saturday March 6, LHU will head to Bloomsburg for a 1 p.m. meet.

Wrestling caps MAC Championships

Doug Spatafore Senior Director of Athletic Communications & Marketing dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) placed fifth at 125 pounds to the lead the way for Lock Haven University wrestling team at the 2021 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships.

Werner, ranked 17th nationally and the tournament’s No. 4 seed, went 4-2 overall at the two-day tournament.

He was the only Bald Eagle to advance to Day 2 action today, and Werner is now a two-time MAC placewinner after a third-place showing a year ago.

After going 2-1 on Day 1, Werner opened todays’ action in the consolation quarterfinals where he recorded another dominating major decision. Werner downed Edinboro’s Lucas Rodriguez 11-2 to advance to the consolation semifinals.

The major over Rodriguez marked Werner’s third major decision of the tournament after both of his Day 1 wins came by way of major decision.

In the consolation semifinals, Werner fell to Rider’s Jonathan Tropea, 7-3.

Werner however bounced back and capped his tournament run with a victory, downing Josh Jones, 6-1, for fifth-place.

NCAA Basketball starts conference tournament Brittany Robertson Lifestyles Editor bnr888@lockhaven.edu The NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball tournament has a “preview’’ before the show begins in mid March.

Conference tournaments are starting next week across 30 different event sites throughout the US. The winners of the conference tournament then build the bracket for the infamous NCAA tournament that is being hosted in Indianapolis. The conference tournaments start with “playoff pods”, opening rounds, or first rounds depending on the conference tournament you are watching.

Some of the venue sites include Las Vegas, Pensacola Florida, New York, Indianapolis, Fort Worth Texas, Jacksonville Florida, and some others. Each site has their own set of regulations with regards to keeping the athletes and coaching staff safe from COVID-19.

Most of the games are televised on ESPN and numerous platforms across ESPN. The conference tournaments are ending right in time for selection Sunday for the basketball tournament. There is more to look forward to as the month descends into “madness!’’
