Police Reports 10/19/20 Evergreem Commons Officers assisted LHPD with Noise Complaint.

Individuals were gone when officers arrived 10/21/20 Campus Village Welfare Check. Officer made contact and confirmed student was temporarily staying off campus.

10/21/20 Off Campus Individual reported possibly being followed by another individual. Due to incident happening off campus LHPD was notified.

10/22/20 East Campus Officer responded to report of suspicious person in area. Officer checked area and was unable to locate anyone fitting description of individual.

Bergen Community College anounnced their final four candidates for their president position on October 28, including our current LHU president Robert Pignatello.

Bergen Community College is a college located in Paramus, New Jersey. Bergen is one of the largest community colleges in New Jersey with over 740 thosand students having takes class there.

Along with the other three candidates, Pignatello will meet virtually with the Bergen college constituencies this coming week inorder to outline their goals for associate degree graduates. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Hosts Twitch Stream

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hosted a Twitch livestream on October 20 to help raise awareness for voting. On Twitter, she announced she would be playing Among Us. Among Us is a popular game taking place in a space ship where crew mates debate who the imposter is and complete tasks, while imposters try to kill the other players without being found out .

Ocasio-Cortez played with fellow congresswoman, Ilhan Omar, and other popular internet personalities HasanBi, Pokimane, Hbomberguy and Corpse Husband. Her newly-created Twitch channel received over 200 thousand followers before her first stream, and became the third most watched Twitch stream in history by peaking at 435 thousand viewers.

One of the most talked about moments from the stream was when she spoke with Hbomberguy, real name Harris Brewis, about healthcare in the U.S. versus the U.K., where he is from.

They talked about how more accessible healthcare is in the U.K., with Ocasio-Cortez saying that she couldn’t imagine going to the doctor in the U.S. without a cash transaction occurring, and Brewis saying that he could just walk in to a doctor’s office and receive help, and research what that would have cost in America.

With everyone being stuck in quarantine because of Covid 19, people have had more time for hobbies like video games. One game in particular has grown in popularity because of this. That game is called “Among Us.” “Among Us” is a multiplayer deduction game developed by InnerSloth, an American game studio. The game was originally released in June 2018, but gained popularity mid-2020.

When playing “Among Us,” the players are all randomly assigned one of two rolls: Crewmate or Imposter.

Four to 10 players are able to play at a time. Without knowing who is who, players are to try to complete tasks that are assigned to them at the beginning of each round while trying to figure out who the imposter or imposters are. There is then a voting portion, where Crewmates have the opportunity to vote potential Imposters out.

The goal of the Crewmates is to either complete all the tasks or to vote out all the Imposters, however the

Imposters try to kill all the Crewmates before they complete all their tasks by sabotaging and framing other players.

Thanks to Sodapoppin, a Twitch streamer, “Among Us” started its growth in popularity in July 2020.

“Among Us” has grown so much that YouTube reported videos about “Among Us” were viewed 4 billion times in September 2020 and TikTok videos related to “Among Us” had over 13 billion views in October 2020.

“Among Us” has even popularized new internet memes, a phenomena called “crewsona” and slang words like “sus” which means ‘suspicious’ that, contrary to popular belief, has been in use long before the game’s release.

Currently, “Among Us” has a 4.5 star rating on the Google Play store with over four million reviews. This is a fun game that is definitely worth a try. It’s very ‘sus’ of you if you haven’t played it yet.

“Legally Blonde 3” has finally received a release date. During a cast reunion on October 20, production studio MGM announced on Twitter that the third installment would arrive in May 2022. The movie was originally announced in 2018 and scheduled for a February 2020 release, but production was delayed before COVID-19 restrictions were put into place.

The first movie, released in 2001, stars Reese Witherspoon as college graduate turned law school student Elle Woods as she attents Harvard Law School in an attempt to prove her intelligence to her former boyfriend. Other cast members include Luke Wilson as Emmett, Elle’s love interest, and Jennifer Coolidge as Paulette, Elle’s best friend. These three are the only cast members to appear in both of the original movies, and Witherspoon is the only one confirmed on the cast for the upcoming third movie, although Witherspoon indicated that Coolidge would also be returning in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in December 2019. It was also announced in May that the film will be written by the team of Dan Goor, who wrote “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,”and Mindy Kaling, who co-wrote “The Office.”

The college experience is never easy Kerri Hoover kah4338@lockhaven.edu Ads/Design Manager and Sports Editor Being a commuter student at LHU is not easy. It doesn’t matter if you’re face-to-face on campus prior to COVID-19, or if you’re constantly stuck at home forced to complete online courses post-COVID. It’s not easy. Sometimes I feel like there are some people at LHU (both students and faculty members) that look down upon commuters because they “aren’t getting the full college experience.”

Prior to COVID-19, commuter life wasn’t easy. I was told before my first semester at LHU started that commuters don’t do as well academically. For me, that was a huge discouragement and it even turned me off from LHU at the beginning. Ever since, I’ve made it my goal to defy the negativities spoken about me.

As a commuter, I was also not living in convenience in the sense that I wasn’t living in a dorm room on campus. Because of this, I had to schedule exactly when I had to leave each morning that way I could attend my classes on time. I didn’t have the luxury of waking up and getting dressed at 9:00 a.m. to attend a class that started at 9:30 a.m.. In addition, it was also harder to get involved in extracurricular activities on campus because most meetings were held in the evenings many hours after I had left.

I also don’t own a fuel efficient car so traveling back and forth to campus multiple times a day for classes and club meetings wasn’t in the books for me.

Since I didn’t spend my life on campus, I also found it difficult to make friends, and to this day, I still really haven’t made any friends besides the two students who I graduated with from high school.

Now that we are living in post-COVID-19 times, I still find it challenging to be a commuter student. On the plus side, I save hundreds of dollars in gas and car repairs each month because I’m putting less wear and tear on my car. In fact, I don’t really ever use my car anymore. I also don’t have to worry about contracting COVID while on campus or having to wear a mask all the time (which is something I struggle with for even 30 minutes).

However, on the downside, I’m home all the time.

Even though I lived at home prior to COVID, going to class everyday was a much needed break for me to escape some of my at-home responsibilities. But now that I’m home for school 100% of the time, I can’t seem to find that escape.

In fact, it feels like I’m expected to do more around the house because I’m constantly home. I find it very challenging to balance my school, work (which I also do remotely), social, and home lives when it seems as if my parents are giving me more work to do. I rarely ever get a break for myself anymore. I also think I’m paying way too much for tuition when I’m never setting a single foot on campus this semester. While I received about $500 off my bill, it still isn’t enough in my opinion to offset the cost of never being on campus.

Sure, commuting students save twice as much as students who live on campus in terms of college expenses; however, our lives are by no means easier, regardless of if we are experiencing a global pandemic or not.

LHU Spring Break Plans Opinion Tess English tae7002@lockhaven.edu Online Manager LHU recently announced the spring semester plans would include nixing spring break and instead starting the semester a week later. This plan while well intentioned in an attempt to be able to keep the dorms open to students for the full semester is somewhat f lawed. A traditional spring break should in fact be an absolute no-go, having students go off campus, going who knows where, and coming in contact with any number of things is obviously a poor idea. However, going through a semester with virtually no mental break for students is nearly just as bad for students’ mental health.

Spring semester is pretty rough even with spring break. In my experience students are of ten just trying to hold it all together knowing that on the other side of their academic rut will be about 11 days of uninterrupted freedom. As the semester goes on it still gets rough with even knowing that sometime in March there will be an opportunity for a big stress relief, let alone thinking about 16 weeks of uninterrupted school stress.

If you can’t have the traditional spring break and having no breaks is less than ideal- what is a school to do? The answer is to break down spring break into a few spring sprinkles over the semester; a Spring Sprinkle if you would. Take the f ive days off students would normally have off and break them down into three day weekends. This would mean students would have f ive Mondays or f ive Fridays off. The calendar committee could even get a little crazy and make it a combination of Mondays and Fridays off.

It stands to reason that having an extra day off provides little to no risk for the average of students. LHU has recently observed a “Fall Holiday”

on October 12 and has not seen a signif icant spike in COVID-19 cases from having three day weekend.

This would allow students to have the same amount of time off and keep students at reduced risk of being exposed to COVID-19.

It’s our job as students to speak up about this issue if we feel strongly about it, because if the Calendar Committee doesn’t know our problem with the current schedule it will never get changed. Campus Covid Regulations Cassie Keller cmk2356@lockhaven.edu News Editor With the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of regulations have changed not just at LHU but just about everywhere outside your home. It has become the new norm to wear a mask or facial coverings when you go out in public.

At LHU it’s even to the point where students can get cited for violating the code of conduct in the handbook. The LHU student hand book says under student conduct regulations, “Violation of any state, regional, or local emergency orders or declarations, mandatory policies or mandatory health advisory requirements, as well as any emergency declarations coming from the University Administration (e.g. social distancing, wearing facial coverings, etc.).” Students found violating this are subject to the disciplinary sanctions in the hand book as well.

These regulations are in place to keep students, staff, faculty and visitors on campus safe during this pandemic. This only works when everyone follows these regulations.

On October 3, LHU held a dedication ceremony for the bald eagle statue that was gifted by the class of 1966. At that event, an alumni from the class of 1966 present at the event was pictured without a mask or face covering while standing within six feet of two other people.

Ron W. Darbeau, the Provost and Vice President Academic Affairs, said in an email correspondence, “The University takes COVID-19 seriously and encourages all LHU visitors and guests to follow established guidelines.” However, only encouraging visitors to

follow the guidelines is not enough, especially when students are subject to disciplinary sanction if they themselves do not follow the said guidelines.

While the code of conduct in the handbook is only applicable to current students, there is still a requirement that all people on campus have facial coverings.

Even if a person has a medical condition and can’t wear a mask for a facial covering, they are expected to wear a facial shield. According to the Director of Public Safety, Tim Stringer, in an email correspondence, “If a non-LHU community member is not wearing a facial covering, the person will be asked to wear a mask and we [public safety officer] will have them to provide to the person. If they refuse to wear a mask, they will be asked to leave campus.”

Enforcing these regulations are important to not only keeping everyone safe during this pandemic, but also upholding LHU’s integrity. If situations like this go unmentioned or unnoticed and nothing is done about it, that shows to not only the students, but the community outside LHU, that we as a campus do not follow the rules and regulations we set for our community.

That ref lects poorly on us as a university regardless if the regulation that was violated is considered a minor or a major offence. We need to hold all people that come to the LHU campus to the standard that we expect of our students, otherwise we are just hypocrates when we say LHU takes Covid-19 seriously.

World Series 2020: LA Dodgers vs Tampa Bay Rays Brittany Robertson Staff Writer bnr888@lockhaven.edu Series heads to Game 6 and the series currently stands at LA 3-2. The games are being played at Globe Life Field in Arlington Texas. The World Series is opened to the public on a limited capacity. On Sunday, the Dodgers came out and won 4-2.

The Tampa Bay Rays started Blake Snell on the mound while Tony Gonsolin started for the Dodgers in Game 6 of the World Series last night. After a turbulent modified season of baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers were crowned World Series champs after winning the game 3-1. In the 6th inning, the Dodgers scored two runs then capitalized on the winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning by Mookie Betts.

LHU Athletics establishes Social Justice Task Force LHU Department of Athletics dspatafo@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University Department of Athletics has announced the establishment of its Social Justice Task Force.

The LHU Athletics Social Justice Task Force membership is comprised of various athletic department representatives, including administrators, coaches and student-athletes, among other university and community designees.

The mission of the task force is to promote an enriching and supportive climate that allows every student-athlete to succeed.

The Social Justice Task Force seeks to collaborate with various units across the university to provide a comprehensive, community-wide approach to diversity, inclusivity and equity. Through strategic planning and program development, the task force hopes to empower the LHU athletics community to build a diverse, inclusive and respectful environment, ensuring the community is a place where all will thrive and recognize their transformative value in an ever-changing global society.

Dr. Tom Gioglio, LHU director of athletics, believes the establishment of the task force is a necessary and important step forward in creating a more supportive environment, and one that allows all LHU student-athletes to feel at home and succeed.

“I am extremely appreciative to the Social Justice Task Force for committing themselves to assisting the Lock Haven University athletic department in promoting an enriching and supportive climate that allows every studentathlete to succeed,” Gioglio said. “I am particularly grateful for the student-athletes who have taken on a significant leadership role within this group for the betterment of the athletic department. Their willingness to hold thoughtful dialogue throughout the summer is allowing the athletic department to evolve, while providing actionable steps that will continue to value and embrace a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture for the LHU athletics community.”

Kenneth Hall, the LHU athletics diversity and inclusion designee (ADID) and director of the university’s office of diversity, equity and inclusion, has been instrumental in the establishment of the Social Justice Task Force and will

play a vital role moving forward.

“The idea is to provide athletes with an advocacy group that will address the issues around diversity, equity and inclusion that they encounter in our community,” Hall said.

“It is vital that our students - athletes or not - realize that they are not alone, and we are here to support them in their journey at The Haven.”

As the ADID, Hall works alongside LHU athletics’ administrators, coaches and student-athletes to help foster an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equity.

Much of the work of the Social Justice Task Force will be driven by the LHU student-athletes and guided by their voice.

“It is crucial that the Lock Haven athletic department is making such significant steps towards providing resources and support to foster inclusion within its diverse community,” said Trinity Sumrall, LHU junior. “The Social Justice Task Force is working towards continuing to build a foundation of acceptance and unity between the Lock Haven University athletes and the Lock Haven community. It is a blessing to be a member of a group that is so determined to shine a bright light on diversity. I truly believe that we have the ability to make huge strides towards creating a welcoming environment for every person included in the Lock Haven athletics community.”

The vision of the Social Justice Task Force is simple and the group will work toward providing a respectful and supportive family environment that values and embraces a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture for the entire LHU athletics community.

Unhappy Valley Kerri Hoover Ads/Design Manager & Sports Editor kah4338@lockhaven.edu Penn State football is off to a rocky start as they took a loss of 35-36 in overtime against the Indian Hoosiers during the first game of the season on Oct. 24.

Much to Nittany Nation’s surprise, the Big Ten approved on Sept. 16 to delay the start of fall sports until late-October. Meaning that Penn State football was back! However, they only had a month to prepare for their shortened, nine game season.

The limited amount of preparation time, the lack of spring season workouts, and a new offensive coordinator proved to be disadvantages for Penn State on Oct. 24.

The Nittany Lions started off strong in the first quarter with a touchdown scored by tight end, Pat Freiermuth followed by a successful PAT by #92 kicker, Jake Pinegar. Penn State was able to make it through the first quarter without an Indiana score, paving its way to victory with a score of 7-0.

After an unsuccessful first quarter, Indiana showed its strength in the second quarter after scoring two touchdowns and a field goal. Penn State, unable to score, entered halftime down by ten points with a score of 7-17.

However, the Nittany Lions bounced back in the third quarter with #14 quarterback, Sean Clifford scoring a touchdown and Pinegar securing the PAT, bringing the score up to 14-17.

The last quarter prevailed as the most intensive quarter of the game thus far. Indiana kicker, Charles Campbell started off with a successful field goal widening its lead against Penn State. But, the Nittany Lions fought back securing an eight point lead against the Hooisers after #28 running back, Devyn Ford and #5 wide receiver, Jahan Dotson, scored two touchdowns back to back. However, Indiana wasn’t backing down without a fight as they scored a touchdown and two-

point conversion within the last minute of the fourth quarter. The Hoosiers closed the gap and ended with a tie against Penn State. The results of overtime would be the final determinant in who won the first game of the season.

Penn State started out on offensive after losing the coin toss to Indiana. They created a seven point lead against the Hoosiers in the first half of overtime. However, the Nittany Lions were unable to block a Hoosier touchdown, resulting in yet another tie. Indiana attempted a controversial two-point conversion to break the tie. The play ended up going under review by referees after suspicions were made that the ball never reached the end zone and that the player was out of bounds. To Penn State’s dismay, the referees called the play in favor of Indiana, who won against Penn State, 35-36, for the first time since 2013.

Saturday marked the first time since 1987 that Indiana won a game against a top ten ranked school. Even though Penn State had the most yardage and number of first downs, it wasn’t enough to pull them out on top.

This upcoming Saturday on Oct. 31, Penn State hosts its first home game of the 2020 season against Ohio State. Ohio State is currently ranked third in the nation, while Penn State is currently ranked at 18th after its loss against Indiana.

This week’s match up will be Ohio State’s first big test of the season and Penn State’s hardest game of the year, making it the College Gameday game of the week.

If Penn State can pull off an upset it should set them up for the rest of the season and a shot at the playoffs in December.
