LHU wraps up yearlong 150th anniversary celebration Julie Stellfox Media Contact jms833@lockhaven.edu When the year 2020 began, no one knew what was in store for the months ahead – but even through a global pandemic, Lock Haven University still found ways to honor and celebrate its sesquicentennial anniversary year.

A 150th anniversary planning committee comprised of 30 students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members played a part in the planning of events and activities for celebrating the milestone year.

The committee was led by co-chairs Joby Topper, director of library and information services and Elizabeth Arnold, executive director of strategic communications.

“Liz and I want to thank the 150th anniversary planning committee for contributing so many good ideas to the celebration. These 30 people — alumni, emeriti, trustees, faculty, students and members of the community — volunteered their time to make this anniversary year the best it could be,” Topper said.

The university’s celebration began during the fall 2019 semester with a Spirit Day for students, faculty and staff to gear up for the 2020 anniversary celebration. Rogers Gymnasium, the oldest building on campus, was the location.

There was food, giveaways and historical memorabilia on display.

On Feb. 14, 2020, LHU kicked off its anniversary year festivities with a 150th birthday celebration, in honor of the day the institution received its Charter – February 14, 1870, as the Central State Normal School.

Tables were set up in Bentley Dining Hall and Rogers Gymnasium, where students, faculty and staff could pick up some LHU 150th branded giveaways, create valentines, get their picture taken with LHU’s

mascot, Talon the Bald Eagle or record a video saying why they love The Haven.

In Rogers, there were more giveaways, music, a free throw contest with prizes for the winning student and faculty or staff member, free cupcakes and popcorn, LHU history was on display and PSECU set up a table with giveaways and games.

One of the ongoing activities throughout 2020 included The Haven 150th anniversary coloring contests – one for adults and one for children. Several entries were received, which were displayed on the university’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Winners will be featured in the winter 2021 special anniversary edition of The Haven Magazine, which will be in mailboxes later this month.

“It’s been my privilege to co-chair LHU’s 150th anniversary committee together with Joby Topper. Lock Haven University’s legacy is steeped in excellence in education and creating lifechanging opportunities for the region’s students,” Arnold said.

Every Friday throughout the anniversary year, the university shared #150Friday posts to its Facebook and Instagram accounts displaying historical photos and information, provided by Topper.

On Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, LHU held a dedication ceremony for its new Bald Eagle statue on the Poorman Commons. It was funded as a gift to the university by alumni from the Class of 1966.

“Reflecting on our history, it strikes me that change and evolution stand as a constant,” Arnold said. “Over 150 years the institution has grown and evolved to meet the needs of students. In a year marked by change, who we are remains the same. We are the Bald Eagles and I know that our legacy and vision will carry us into the next 150 years.”

LHU students watch otter feeding during Monterey Bay Aquarium virtual visit Kerri Hoover Ad/Design Manager & News Editor kah4338@lockhaven.edu Lock Haven University (LHU) students explored various aquatic exhibits via Zoom during a virtual tour of the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Feb. 22.

Social Work and Counseling professors, Carl Sell and Rachel Epstein, helped facilitate the event Monday afternoon.

“Dr. Epstein and I were looking for ways to provide more social and cultural activities for TRIO SSS scholars, activities that, prior to COVID, we would have been able to physically go and do. I’m a huge fan of open-access things that are still of high quality, and I love animals, and I know a lot of our students do as well … Monterey Bay had the best experience that was open to the public,” said Sell.

He utilized the free, live webcams on the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s website to show the students a variety of aquatic species living on exhibit at the California aquarium.

Students had the opportunity to choose which exhibits they wanted to explore before watching a narrated sea otter feeding at 4:30 p.m. EST. Among the explored exhibits included the kelp forest, open sea, shark, moon jellyfish, and African penguins.

The highlight of the event for most students was the otter exhibit. They witnessed a live, trained sea otter feeding session where four female otters performed various tasks for treats of clam, squid, and shrimp. These tactile and enrichment training sessions help stimulate the otters’ minds and bodies in order to improve their overall health and longevity while at the aquarium.

“My favorite aquarium cam was the sea otters because you got to see the trainers feed them and play tricks with them. I especially liked the audio over the camera explaining what was happening,” said senior

Criminal Justice major, Adriana Bumbarger.

While the intended audience was directed toward TRIO students, any LHU student interested in attending was welcomed.

Roughly a dozen students participated in the virtual Zoom tour. The online meeting allowed them the freedom to pop-in and out of the event, as their schedules permitted. The LHU Biology department also paid a special visit toward the beginning.

Overall, the virtual visit was accepted well by the participating students and faculty. They enjoyed the opportunity to relax, have fun, and look at animals with their LHU friends and family.

It also served as a trial run to determine student interest and popularity for future events.

“I enjoyed the event because I got to see a lot of animals that we would not normally get to see during the pandemic. It was great to have a bit of normalcy of going to an aquarium - even if it was virtual,” said Bumbarger.

As a TRIO peer mentor, Piper Harsch encourages LHU students to take advantage of virtual opportunities and events, like this one, in the future to help cope with stress and depression.

“Attend the virtual events! As a mentor who is tasked with creating these events virtually I think it’s vital. TRIO has been dedicated to virtual events since last March and we really want to continue to have a community that supports each other. I think students are all stressed and dealing with a lot so if we can provide an hour where they get some time off to look at some fish and make jokes with peers I feel like I’ve done my job,” said the senior Social Work major.

Another virtual tour of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is scheduled for Monday, March 15.

“Bridgerton” is a real whirlwind

Bridgerton is a romantic drama that was a nearinstant hit upon its debut on Netflix. The series quickly became one of the most-watched series (with over 82 million households) on Netflix because of its creative storytelling, the relationships between characters, and romance laced throughout the show.

Bridgerton is a thrilling period piece that travels back to the time of aristocracy. While the journey back in time might be appealing, it can make certain things hard to follow like figuring out the social protocol of a different and perhaps more conservative time. It’s also pretty heavy-handed on the drama which might be salacious for some, but tedious for others. If it helps, picture Gossip Girl if it happened in 19th century London.

The show is centered around a wealth of characters including the entire Bridgerton family, there are two potential characters to pinpoint as the main character of the show: Lady Whistledown, the gossip columnist who names the subjects her rumors, and Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) the eldest of the Viscountess Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell). The story itself follows Daphne, her family, and the rest of the supporting cast, but the story is moved along by Lady Whistledown’s tell-all gossip column which can greatly affect the character’s social standings when they are the topics of her writings.

Bridgerton’s show opens with the narrator, Lady Whistledown’s first letter being read. It establishes the arch of the season which will follow London’s courting season 1813. This

is big deal for the Bridgerton family as it is Daphne’s first season. Given her family’s status and technically being the first in line, although being a woman means she won’t necessarily inherit the title of her family name, makes her a huge focus of this courting season.

Although between her brother’s demanding expectations of who is good enough to marry, and Lady Whistledown’s musings of her courtships start causing Daphne hardships in finding a match. This when Daphne strikes a deal with the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) to put on a fake relationship for reasons that could benefit them both.

Even though this is just one of many intricate storylines the show follows. There is the story of the somewhat prodigal son, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) who struggles to fulfill his duty as the head of the family since his father, the viscount died. A story of a young woman, who is trying to get married off as soon as possible to conceal a pregnancy. The rivalry that blooms between the Queen of England and Lady Whistledown. Just to name a few of the “b-side stories” despite their thoughtfulness and detail.

Kerri Hoover kah4338@lockhaven.edu Ads/Design/News Editor Concerts in the U.S. look a lot different than they did earlier this year as artists try to come up with creative ways to still host live concerts amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The result of coming up with new entertainment ideas? Drive-in concerts.

Drive-in concerts are becoming a popular substitute to the traditional crowded concert setting, which seems like a thing of the past now. The purpose of these concerts are to continue allowing people the opportunity to listen to live music along with giving musicians the chance to continue performing in front of audiences, all while safely social distancing.

These concerts are hosted across the country at drive-in movie theaters locations or venues with lots of open space or large fields. Only one ticket per standard sized vehicle is needed for entry allowing four to six people to attend the concert for one price.

Since the pandemic began, the music industry has capitalized on the idea of recreating popular mid-19th century hangouts into 21st century social distancing entertainment events.

Many famous artists are jumping on the newfound bandwagon and either have already performed at drive-in concerts or are scheduled to perform again in the near future.

According to Billboard, artists such as Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Michael W. Smith, and the Chainsmokers started drive-in concert tours back in July. While artists such as Kane Brown, Aaron Lewis, and Sully Erna prepare to kick off their tours later this fall.

Some artists chose not to reschedule drive-in tours and instead rescheduled or postponed their tour dates until the beginning or middle of 2021. For instance, Chris Stapeton rescheduled his All-American Road Show for April 2021.

Justin Beiber pushed back his world tour until June 2021.

Harry Styles announced that the postponed North American dates for his Love On Tour will resume in August 2021.

While Dan and Shay are waiting until next fall to kick off their tour.

Spring cleaning is a time-honored tradition that might be even more important this year than previous ones. Since the COVID-19 outbreak people have been spending a lot more time in the home than any other. Cleaning up your workspace and living space can be a great boost for mental health. Besides who doesn’t love the feeling of being a freshly cleaned room! If you’re struggling with how to tidy up here are a few good rules of thumbs when cleaning up.

First things f irst, remember to take breaks. Feeling like you need to declutter everything at once can become over whelming and be a reason you put off spring cleaning til next spring. If you f ind yourself needing to clean up, but stressed about the clean up just take it a little at a time. Do about 30 minutes or so ever yday and you’ll be on the path to a cleaner place.

Next put on background noise. This can be light tunes or a tv show for backg round noise. Having a little something to stimulate you while you’re doing the mundane, but necessar y task of cleaning can make it feel a little more bearable.

Another g reat to keep up is get yourself a lot of compact storage. You can f ind lots of these on Amazon, Etsy, and well pretty much anywhere on the internet. There are foot rests that double as blanket stooges, hangers that slide a certain way to save

space, spice rack magnets that stick to the top of the oven, jewelry organizers, and so much more. Just see where you could use more space and google items that will make that area more eff icient like “off ice organizer” or “kitchen storage”.

When going through your stuff ask yourself follow a Joy Marie Kondo tip, “does this spark joy?” If it does keep it! If doesn’t let it go. Unless it brings a smile to your face you don’t really need it, well… except for school books and work uniforms, but you get the gist.

Spring is fast approaching! For most people they look for ward to not bundling up in so many layerrs of clothes, or taking the family dog outside on walks isn’t dreadful because of the b o n e - c h i l l i n g c o l d . H o w e v e r, f o r m a n y people with seasonal allergies, transitioning into Springtime isn’t something enjoyable.

But with this turn in the weather it also includes figuring out if your stuffy nose is just that-a stuffy nose, o r i s i t m o r e s e r i o u s ? We h a v e b e e n i n the midst of the pandemic for the last ye a r a n d h ave s o m e m o r e s y mp t o m s t o w a t c h o u t f o r. B u t l e t s b r e a k i t d o w n t o s i mp l e t e r m s s o y o u h ave a b e t t e r u n derstanding of what to look for when that stuffy nose hits!

a r e m o r e s e n s i t i v i t y t o p e t d a n d e r, cockroaches, or mold. Seasonal allergies f lare up in spring to early Fall, while perennial allergies are a year around problem. Hay fever causes some other symptoms as well that include, r unny nose, itchy eyes, fatigue from not sleeping well because your nose is stuffed, A simple treatment to combatting Hay fever is making sure that your windows are closed during high periods of pollen, and wearing sunglasses to keep pollen out of your eyes.

“The Masked Singer” vs. “The Masked Dancer” Kristin Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor There are two reality shows that are very popular these days: “The Masked Singer” and “The Masked Dancer”.

“The Masked Singer” is when celebrities are in costume from head-to-toe and their speaking voices are disguised but their singing voices are not and you have to guess who they are by their singing voice and the clues that they give you. “The Masked Dancer” is almost the same concept except that you have to guess the celebrities by their dance moves and the clues that they give you.

There have been many celebrities on “The Masked Singer” that went from Jojo Siwa to Donny Osmond to Jesse McCartney and to Gladys Knight. Some were easy to guess and some were not so easy. The judges on “The Masked Singer” are Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Ken Jeong, and hosted by Nick Cannon.

In my opinion, Robin, Jenny and Nicole are better judges than Ken as he always seems to come up with a crazy guess for a celebrity and tries to convince everyone of why he’s right. Sometimes he actually proves himself but most of the time, he’s wrong.

Some of the voices on “The Masked Singer” are easy to recognize like when I recognized Adrienne Bailon from the “Cheetah Girls”. Sometimes, the voices can be ones that you haven’t heard in a long time like Jesse McCartney or there are some that you didn’t even know that could sing like Tom Bergeron from “America’s Funniest Home Videos” and “Dancing With the Stars”, and Tony Hawk.

On the flipside, The Masked Dancer had celebrities that ranged from Ice T to Elizabeth Smart to Jordin Sparks.

Every week it was hard to guess who they all were just by their dance moves but they had clue packages and they had clues on the stage when they danced that might have helped a little bit. The judges on “The Masked Dancer” are Paula Abdul, Ashley Tisdale, Brian Austin Green and Ken Jeong and hosted by Craig Robinson. I think Paula was the best at guessing because she knows a lot more dancers than the rest of the judges.

Compared to “The Masked Singer”, “The Masked Dancer” was a lot harder to guess who the celebrities were. Almost all of the celebrities that were revealed every week, I didn’t even know they could dance. There was only one that I knew could dance and that was Maksim Chmerkovskiy and that was because he was a pro dancer on “Dancing with the Stars” for years.

If I were to give my opinion on which show I thought was easier at guessing who the celebrities were, I would say the “The Masked Singer” would be the easiest because at least on there you are getting a voice that you may or may not recognize as compared to “The Masked Dancer” where you pretty much have to rely on the clues in the package and on the stage when the celebrities dance.

COVID-19 Antibody Testing Results Dim Hope for Herd Immunity in Virginia James Barney jdb9a@virginia.edu Guest Writer Statewide blood testing for COVID-19 has found that only 2% of Virginians had antibodies to the virus as of mid-August. The result has prompted the researchers to conclude that herd immunity in Virginia is “currently not a plausible means of ending the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Approximately 2.8 times more Virginians had antibodies than had been identified by the state’s PCR testing, the researchers report. That ratio is lower than many estimates predicting how much of the country’s population may already have COVID-19 antibodies.

Hispanic study participants had the highest exposure rate, with more than 10% having antibodies. Other groups with “notably higher” rates included Northern Virginia residents (4.4%), those aged 40 to 49 (4.4%) and the uninsured (5.9%). Prevalence by zip code ranged from 0% to 20%.

Often, neighboring zip codes produced dramatically different results, the researchers say. “We carefully follow case counts but need to recognize case counts are an underestimate of the true number of COVID infections,” said Eric Houpt, MD, the chief of UVA Health’s Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health. “If we use these data to project to today, we would project that as of February 2021, still under 20% of Virginians may have been exposed to the virus.”

COVID-19 Antibody Testing To better understand how widespread COVID-19 has been in Virginia, UVA Health and the Virginia Department of Health partnered with large ­­hospitals around the state.

The researchers tested the blood of 4,675 outpatients at five geographically diverse health systems: UVA Health in the northwest, Inova Health System in the north, Sentara Healthcare in the east, Carilion Clinic in the southwest and Virginia Commonwealth University in the central.

Each site enrolled up to 1,000 residents, aged 18 or older, who were not being evaluated for potential COVID-19 infections. Participants matched the age, race and ethnicity makeup of each region. Among the 101 partici-

pants who were found to have COVID-19 antibodies, 42 were Hispanic. People with antibodies were more likely to live in a multifamily unit and had contact with a patient confirmed to have COVID-19, the researchers report. The researchers estimated that approximately 66% of the detected infections were asymptomatic.

Prior COVID-19 studies have suggested that confirmed cases may represent only a small percentage of the people who have been infected. Estimates of total unrecognized infections have ranged from six times the confirmed cases to 53 times, so the results from Virginia were lower in comparison.

“Virginians are still quite susceptible to this virus,” Houpt said. “We need to continue wearing masks in public and practice social distancing and hand washing. I encourage everyone who qualifies to get a COVID vaccine when they can.”

LHU athletics set for return to competition: No spectators allowed at home events Doug Spatafore Senior Director of Athletic Communications & Marketing dspatafo@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University department of athletics announced today (Monday, Feb. 22) that spectators will not be permitted to attend home Bald Eagles’ sporting events this spring.

The decision is in line with campus health and safety guidelines and one made in the best interest of the health and safety of the LHU student-athletes.

The LHU athletic communication & marketing office is planning to provide a live video stream and/or live statistical feed for as many home events as possible. Appropriate coverage links will be available on each team’s schedule page at GoLHU.com, the official website of Lock Haven University athletics.

To date, 12 of 20 LHU athletics teams are planning to compete during the spring 2021 semester including traditional spring sports – baseball, softball, lacrosse, golf, tennis and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

Lock Haven’s NCAA Division I field hockey team will play a limited spring schedule starting in March. Also competing this spring – in limited fashion - will be swimming, men’s and women’s cross country and the Bald Eagles Division I men’s wrestling program.

The men’s wrestling team will be the first to return to action as the Bald Eagles are set to compete at the 2021 Mid-American Conference (MAC) championships, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27 in Trenton, New Jersey. No spectators will be allowed at the 2021 MAC championships.

The first home event of the 2021 spring semester is set for Saturday, Feb. 27 as the cross country teams will host an invite with several Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) teams competing.

Getting ready for the March Madness Brittany Robertson Lifestyles Editor bnr888@lockhaven.edu It is crazy to think that this week is the last week of February! With the end of February, let’s talk about what’s coming up in March: March Madness is a post-season college basketball tournament. The tournament is scheduled to start on March 18 with the first four teams, then it will continue on from there. The tournament ends in the beginning of April.

There are 67 different basketball games scheduled. The tournament is going to be “bubble’’ style with the location being in Indianapolis. Fans are able to attend in a limited capacity during the tournament.

Fans are required to wear masks and seating will be socially distanced. Ticket information is going to be available after March 1. Just like bowl selection with college football, there is a selection show for basketball, that day is scheduled for March 14 at 6 p.m.

Currently, teams are finishing their regular season games then going into conference tournaments.

Conference tournament champions do get the chance to be seeded into the NCAA tournament or be invited to the NIT tournament.

My two best recommendations to prepare for March Madness: 1. Research the teams that could be potentially included in the tournament, we do know that things are constantly changing.

2. Print out the bracket, there is a lot of basketball to watch over the weeks ahead. Better to prepare well in advance of the first game.

Keep an eye out as the tournament gears up, I will be watching right along with all fans to see who is the winner by the end.
