Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO and founder, announced on Feb. 2 that he would be stepping down from his position. Bezos is not leaving the company, but rather will take up the role of executive chairman as of the third quarter of this year starting July 1. Andy Jassy, the chief executive of Amazon Web Services, will take over as CEO of Amazon. The announcement came as a surprise as part of Amazon’s fourth-quarter earnings report. This fourth-quarter was reported with record sales of 125.5 billion dollars, making it the first time the company had 100 billion dollars in revenue in a single quarter. With 7.2 billion dollars in profits, that is more than double compared to previous years. To see the report, go to this link. According to a memo written to employees about the transition, Bezos wrote, “Being the CEO of Amazon is a deep responsibility, and it’s consuming when you have a responsibility like that, it’s hard to put attention on anything else. As Exec Chair I will stay engaged in important Amazon initiatives but also have the time and energy I need to focus on
the Day 1 Fund, the Bezos Earth Fund, Blue Origin, The Washington Post, and my other passions.” To see the memo, go to this link. Bezos first founded Amazon in 1994 as Cadabra specifically as an online bookstore. Almost 30 years later, Amazon has made Bezos one of the richest people in the world and has allowed him to found the various funds and other businesses he owns. “This journey began some 27 years ago. Amazon was only an idea, and it had no name,” Bezos wrote, “Today, we employ 1.3 million talented, dedicated people, serve hundreds of millions of customers and businesses, and are widely recognized as one of the most successful companies in the world.”

Margaret Crichton, Class of 1901
The passage of the Pennsylvania Normal School Act of 1857 established a procedure to create twelve Normal Schools in Pennsylvania with the sole purpose of training teachers. These “Normal Schools” provided an opportunity for women to get an advanced education as school teachers. Founded in 1870, the Central State Normal School (CSNS) in Lock Haven enrolled eightyseven female students in the first year. The fact that women were accepted at the normal schools was an enormous step forward in providing women with an equal right to education and professional job opportunities in Pennsylvania. Nationally, by 1880, one-third of all students enrolled in higher education were women. Margaret Crichton attended the Central State Normal School in 1894. After briefly leaving school because of financial reasons, Margaret returned to CSNS and graduated in 1901. She then taught school for two years before getting married and leaving her job. That was because in 1903, married women were not allowed to teach in public schools. After her husband passed away in 1918 from the Flu Pandemic, Margaret returned to teaching to support her children. She continued to teach for 19 years in Pittsburgh before retiring at the age of 60.

It’s almost springtime in central Pennsylvania, in spite of the recent amount of snowfall that might lead you to believe. While you wait for the weather to catch up to the season, try getting a head start on your reading list before the allure of spring outdoor activities sets. Here are a few recommendations if your reading list needs a fresh update! 1. “Go Ask Alice,”- This book is a classic for the ages; it’s written as a diary of an anonymous 15-year-old girl whose self-image isn’t great and her coming-of-age drama can surpass the typical teenage angst. This of course is only the beginning of the anonymous girl’s problem. Her life is turned upside after attending a party where she is served a drink laced with LSD. This starts a long life addiction that may ultimately cost the girl her life. This book has been considered controversial since its published date for sex, heavy drug usage, and teen pregnancy. For anyone with related triggers or trauma relating to any of those three things, this story may not be suitable for you to read. 2. “The Bane Chronicles,”- This story is a lighthearted page-turner. The scene is set around an immortal bisexual warlock and his misadventures over the near infinity of time in which he exists. Although his actual age is relatively unclear. It’s an anthology of stories so you can get a whole story with background, rising action, climax, and falling action all within one quick chapter. It’s perfect for anyone with trouble focusing for long stints of time, and it’s super magical which
obviously is a bonus. “The Bane Chronicles,” is a companion piece to The Mortal Instruments (TMI). Being familiar with the other stories from the TMI universe is appreciated, but not necessary as enough context is provided to make it a stand-alone book. However, it definitely packs more of an emotional punch for those who have read through the previous books. 3. “Avatar, the Last Airbender: The Rise of Kyoshi,”- This is great for a little childhood nostalgia. If you watched the Avatar TV series as a kid, or recently when it came to Netflix you might find yourself gravitating back to series wanting more, and this prequel book series is the perfect avenue. It focuses on the early life of Avatar Kyoshi, the Earth bender. The narrative focuses on how her life after being abandoned by her parents and other aspects of her upbringing made Kyoshi the merciless justice seeker people rever centuries later.

Kristin Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor The movie “Soul” is about a New York jazz pianist named Joe who teaches band in school but dreams of being a successful jazz musician and gets his shot when he falls down a sewer and finds himself trapped between earth and the afterlife. He works with another soul named “22”, who has been in the land between Earth and the afterlife for a long time and doesn’t think that Earth is worth going back to. Joe and “22” end up teaching each other important life lessons. Joe learns to enjoy life to the fullest and “22” learns that earth is worth going back to because there is more to enjoy. With the cast of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Angela Bassett and Daveed Diggs and directed by Pete Docter and Kemp Powers. This movie was released back in December of 2020. What a lot of people probably don’t know about this movie is that it was influenced by great movies like “Defending Your Life,” “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Carol”. There were also a lot of Pixar Easter eggs throughout the movie as well and Joe was the first African American main protagonist of a Pixar movie. “Soul” was also the first Pixar movie to be released on Christmas.
I thought the actors did an awesome job of playing the characters because they really put out the message that you have to be happy with everything that happens in your life and to live life to the fullest because you never know when your days are going to be numbered. The thing that I love most about this movie was that there was quite a bit of psychology in it. When “22” is doubting herself after being told by so many people that she would never be worthy of having a mentor and going back to earth, that is called the self-fulfilling prophecy. Basically what self-fulfilling prophecy means is when you tell someone that they are a certain way so many times that they start to believe it and they start acting like it. A good example of this would be if you keep telling a child that they’re bad to the point where they start believing it and they start behaving like it. I would be careful what you would label someone as because words are powerful whether they are good or bad.

Oh Winter, so much snow! So, you hear that school is “suspended” for the day and you are trying to figure out the best way to celebrate the snow day. Well, what to do? Here are some simple ideas to survive a blizzard: -Movie Day! There are numerous streaming platforms to search through for different genres of movies, TV shows, etc for your viewing pleasure. Make some popcorn and watch your favorite winter time movies with your best friends. -Schoolwork catchip: okay, I know that the term is “Snow day’’ but it is always a good excuse to get ahead on homework, and prepare for upcoming exams or presentations. It will ease your anxiety when your classes meet again. -Make a snowman: As Ana asks Elsa, “Do you wanna build a snowman?: Grab some friends, bundle up in layers of clothes to handle the cold, and build a snowman. No judgement from me! It is an activity that you can be proud of and your neighbors too. -Cook a warm meal: Making a meal can be an
adventure! There are a ton of winter time recipes across the internet to try and make. Your family, friends, or signifcant other will be impressed! These four ways to survive a blizzard can make it just a little more fun and distract you from the cold.

It can be hard to see past some of the popular releases as a casual gamer or a non-gamer looking from the outside in at times. Not there is anything wrong with popular gaming hits, but if you’re looking for a little uncharted territory or at least lesser-known territory check a few of these games on the fringe! Bugsnax. Players start the game as a disgraced journalist looking for their next big story to save their career. Luckily, a video from famous explorer Elizabert Megafig, who has a somewhat checkered level of credibility, comes in. She invites you to report on her latest and greatest discovery a superfood called bugsnax. Your editor is skeptical the story will amount to anything given Elizabert’s past, but if the story is true would make for a salacious headline. With your job on the line you head out to Snaktooth Island, but one or two small problems. One, you’ve crash-

This game is considered to be in the psychological horror genre and might not be suited for all audiences. Have you ever thought you could what Ghost Hunters do, but better? Or at least wish you could without the possible safety risk of encountering something supernatural if you believe in that sort of thing? Then phasmophobia might be the game for you. Players are contracted to explore a variety of places like homes, schools, and other institutions using a variety of tools and hunting equipment like the classic EMF readers. In fact, players can
use the microphone to even interact with the ghost (i.e if the ghost hears you it might give you a sign). The Outer World. Warning: this game is rated M (for mature) for blood and gore, intense violence, and strong language by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). And may not be suited for people under the age of 17. When Earth is considered no longer considered livable planet cooperations decide to colonize other planets. The caveat of obtaining passage to a new and safe world, of course, is signing the cooperation policy and agreeing to work for this company when the player finds themself aboard a mad scientist ship. The mad scientist believes that cooperations have gone too far and has enlisted you to help them take the cooperations down. You can choose to join his conspiracy and takedown the cooperations or play the cooperate route and betray the mad scientist.

Skiing vs. Snowboarding Ian MacGregor itm9315@lockhaven.edu Guest Writer In the great debate over which of these winter-time sports reigns superior, there are certain factors to take into consideration. Let’s veiw the pros and cons before picking a winner. Learning Among skiers and snowboarders, there is a general agreement that learning to ski is much easier and comes more naturally than learning to snowboard. This is partly due to your orientation...you have two skis for your two feet, and you are facing forward. On a snowboard, your feet are both locked-in to a single board and your orientation is sideways (like a surfer). When you’re learning to snowboard, you wipe-out frequently and are sore for days afterward. However, if you plan to stick with it, it is also recognized that snowboarding is easier to “master” than skiing. Tricks You can do plenty of tricks when skiing or snowboarding, as long as you have the skills. Most resorts have “terrain parks” for doing tricks and stunts, although these are usually dominated by snowboarders. Comfort When it comes to gear, snowboarding has the edge. The comfort of snowboarding boots compared to the discomfort of ski boots is almost reason enough to take up snowboarding. As long as skiing has been around, the boots have been notoriously uncomfortable. Ski Lifts The ski lift is the chair you ride from the bottom to the top of the mountain and is essential to making these two sports possible. Without question, the ski lift favors the skier over the snowboarder. A skier glides into the lift zone, gets scooped up, and glides off the chair at the top of the mountain; easy. A snowboarder actually has to unclip their boot from the rear binding and attempt to shimmy their way one-footed into position and then do it again at the top. This is why snowboarders can often be seen falling over at the top of ski lifts. I can say from experience, it’s annoying, frustrating, and pretty embarrassing. Popularity By sheer numbers, skiing is far more popular around the world. However, that might have something to do with the fact that skiing is far older than snowboarding. According to
Free-The-Powder.com, skiing dates back to between 8000BC6000BC whereas snowboarding didn’t really catch on until the late 1980s. Price There is no significant difference here between skiing and snowboarding. The gear costs about the same to rent, buy, and maintain. Lift passes at resorts cost the same for both. Injuries Not a fun category, but perhaps the most important of them all. Both of these sports are inherently fun, and dangerous. In general, snowboarding has a higher rate of injuries but injuries sustained while skiing are more severe. Snowboarders fall often and because they usually try to “catch” themselves, injuries are usually sprains and fractures of the wrists, hands, and collarbones. Ski injuries often include knee sprains and tibia fractures. Just thinking about ski-related knee injuries makes me cringe Pet-Peeves For snowboarding, it is the frequency of unintentionally “catching an edge” at high speeds and face-planting into the snow. Also, chair lifts are just more work on a board. For skiing, it’s trying to carry your skis and poles from one place to the next. It’s a lot of gear to manage and can often make the walk frustrating. There is also the infamous “yard-sale”. This occurs when you wipe-out on skis and your skis and poles all go flying in different directions; your gear is scattered all over the mountain and you have to awkwardly run around collecting it all. Which is Better? Skiing and Snowboarding are both a ton of fun. As you can see, they both have their pros and cons, benefits and drawbacks. Skiing has been the reigning champ for a long time, and snowboarding is the young, hip, new kid on the block. My final answer: Skiing. To be honest, I think the tiebreaker here is simply my bias towards skiing. I started skiing when I was three-years-old with my parents and many of my greatest memories involve this legendary sport. I didn’t try snowboarding until college and although it’s great, it doesn’t have the legacy factor. But who cares what I think...go try them both and decide for yourself. Happy Trails!

LHU wrestling to return to competition John Davern LHU Communications Intern jmd7247@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University department of athletics has announced on Feb. 11 that the NCAA Division I men’s wrestling team will return to action and plans to compete at the 2021 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships on February 26-27 at Rider University. “We are grateful that our student-athletes have the opportunity to compete at the MAC Championships. It has been a challenging year, but our wrestlers have stayed focused and determined,” LHU head wrestling coach Scott Moore said, “Our coaching staff is excited to help each wrestler prepare to their fullest as we begin training for the conference tournament. We are thankful for the work of our athletic director, athletic trainers, senior administration and Dr. Bashar Hanna, Interim President for their effort in making this possible. Our wrestlers are excited to represent Lock Haven University as we battle for a MAC championship.” The 2021 NCAA Division I National Championships are scheduled for March 18-20 in St. Louis.

Softball picked fifth in PSAC East, Haven set to step into the batter’s box March 5 John Davern LHU Communications Intern jmd7247@lockhaven.edu The LHU softball team was picked to finish fifth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Preseason Coaches’ Poll, which was released Feb. 12. West Chester received six first-place votes and was picked by the coaches as the favorite in the East. Kutztown received three first-place votes and checked in at No. 2. Bloomsburg, Shippensburg and Lock Haven rounded out the top five. In the Western Division, Gannon was selected as the team to beat, while Seton Hill and IUP rounded out the top three. The LHU softball team is scheduled to begin its season on March 5. LHU will only play other PSAC Eastern Division opponents during the regular season. The slate consists of Friday-Saturday four-game series with home-and-home doubleheaders both days. The season will culminate with the currently scheduled May 5 start of the PSAC Championship tournament. The winner of the PSAC tournament will advance to compete the NCAA tournament. On March 5, the Bald Eagles will start the season at home against nationally ranked No. 23 West Chester, in what will be a Friday doubleheader. The next day, the team will travel to West Chester, Pennsylvania for a second doubleheader on the opposing turf. A week later LHU Softball will travel to Kutztown to start a series with the Golden Bears. Lock Haven will then face Millersville on March 19-20. Despite the shortened slate in 2020, the Bald Eagles showed promise in the early going. Head coach Kelly Shannon led the Bald Eagles to a sixwin start in tournament play at the 2020 Snowbird Softball Freeze Out and the PFX Tournament in Florida. Now-junior Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./ Liberty) will lead the team again on the offensive side of the ball. The outfielder had a hot start to 2020 in the batter’s box. The slugger managed a
.392 batting average and a .608 slugging percentage on 51 at-bats. She slipped away with six stolen bases on seven attempts. In the circle, sophomore Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) will look to pick up where she left off during her freshman year. In 2020, the standout recorded a dominant 6-3 win-loss record over 52 innings pitched. She also boasted a sturdy 3.23 ERA. The Bald Eagles will also rely heavily on the expertise of fifth-year seniors Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) and Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./Spring Brook). In 2020, the duo combined for 12 runs and 13 RBIs. Combined they have started 279 games for LHU.
