Discovering the LHU Biology and Marine Club Cassandra Keller Managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu

The Biology and Marine Club is one of the many academic clubs LHU offers. The club has been active for over 25 years. Katlyn Rash is the current president of the club.

The club is for students interested in Biology and the marine field. It helps teach the students about the degrees LHU offers related to the sciences through various field trips the club takes such as electrofishing.

The club also shows how those degrees can be used after graduating with guest speakers who work in the field. Rash said, “It gives career opportunities to new students. They get to learn what they can do with their degree … especially because we have guest speakers come and talk about what they do.”

Outside of the academic side of the club, members get to participate in fun team-building activities and events such as a spooky night where members got to paint and carve pumpkins while watching scary movies for Halloween. Rash said, “Even if they’re not into science, they’ll have fun just getting to meet new people.”

Staying healthy with the LHU Athletic Training Club Cassie Keller Managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu

The Athletic Training club is one of the academic clubs that LHU offers and has been active for a little over 20 years. Ryan Kupetz is the current club president.

LHU’s Athletic training club was selected in 2018 to host the 2020 Pennsylvania Athletic Training Society student symposium.

Although Covid-19 changed the club’s original plans, they instead held virtual sessions for the event.

The Athletic Training club primarily focuses on participating in community service events such as their annual roadside clean up that has been held for 15 years.

The club also participates in the adopt a family program that helps low-income families around the holidays as well as the Martin Luther King Jr. day of service event held in the spring.

Alyssa Dickey, the club secretary, said, “I didn’t start in Athletic training, but once I joined the club, I felt like I really had a family here on campus. I had that sense of communi-

ty, of belonging and I think anyone who joined the club would definitely have that feeling too.”

The club also has an active alumni facebook group, @LHUAthleticTrainingStudentsandAlumni, for current students to connect with other LHU alumni.

Erika Myers, the club secretary, said, “There’s a lot of alumni who are still involved with the club and will come back to speak, so anyone that is really interested in the athletic training club has a great networking system.”

The Athletic Training club meets about once or twice a month on Sundays at 7 p.m. in the Willis Health Professions Building.

Any student interested in joining the club is welcome to come to the meetings, contacting one of the club officials, or reaching out on their instagram page, @lhu_athletic_training_club.

Nov. 19, 2021 “Red (Taylors Version)” Review: Still holds up after all these years Alex Ross A&E Section Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu Taylor Swift is undeniably one of the biggest pop stars of the 21st century. Her name is more recognizable than 99 percent of artists in the mainstream at this point in time (besides perhaps Drake). So when news of her not owning her masters struck news sites, there was an immense amount of support for her.

After failing to buy out those master recordings of her early records, Taylor decided it would be best to simply rerecord all of her old albums just so she can own them.

Taylor already released her version of “Fearless” earlier in April this year with nearly two hours of material for fans and critics to dig in. This new version of “Red” however, exceeds two hours, making it a hefty listen.

After sifting through the entire album, it is clear to me that Taylor acknowledged the mistakes she made in the original recordings and fixed many of the production and mixing issues.

These touches made to the production do not hinder or ruin the tracks by any means either.

The first track “State of Grace” holds distinct differences from the original, like how the drums sound more impactful and the guitar tones are slightly altered. But besides that, not much has changed. I still regard it as one of her best songs not just on the album, but in her career.

Another one of her standout tracks is “All Too Well,” which has been regarded by many as her greatest achievement in her discography. The song is an

emotional gut punch of a relationship that Taylor reflects on. I like this version better than the original too.

However, the album also contains an originally unreleased 10 minutes version of “All Too Well” which adds many layers to the song. It goes on a bit too long for me, but I commend her effort for giving the song more emotional depth.

“I Knew You Were Trouble” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” are still somewhat of annoying earworms with the former being much worse with it’s awkwardly added dubstep chorus. The latter, however, was improved upon and I do not mind listening to it.

I feel as though I was too harsh on “Red” when it was released in 2012, and now that it is 2021, I have come to realize it was a decent collection of songs.

This new rendition of the album has made me fall in love with Swift’s songwriting.

It made me rethink Taylor in a different light because listening to these songs being sung by a 31-year-old Swift is much different than a 22-year-old Swift. It feels much more reflective, and that’s what really holds the album up above the rest of her discography.

Despite the length and less than stellar tracks (“I Knew You Were Trouble” and “Stay Stay Stay”), “Red (Taylor’s Version)” is a worthwhile listen for any pop music fan, as the highs outweigh the lows tenfold. I guess I didn’t originally understand Taylor and her music, but I am glad that I do now.

Nov. 19, 2021 “Indietronica” music genre explained Alex Ross A&E Section Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu By the mid-90s and the dissolution of grunge’s popularity, rock music had a wide variety of subgenres.

Each of these genres were significant at the time, but one that held a hefty amount of influence was “indie-electronica” (also called indietronica).

Indietronica is a very broad label used on a variety of bands. The genre itself consists of a mix of indie- rock and pop including synthesizers. It also often involves elements of dance music (though not always).

With this description, there is an ambiguity as to what is classified as indietronica, though it can oftentimes be very recognizable.

The genre had its origins in England in the early 90s, with acts like Stereolab and Broadcast. Releases like “Peng!” from Stereolab or “The Book Lovers” EP from Broadcast showcase songs that can be clearly defined as indietronica today. However, these efforts sounded completely unique and unlike much of the grunge and alternative rock being released at the time.

From that point on, this mix of electronic music and indie rock spread outside of England and dipped it’s toes in the United States and Japan.

Cornelius, from Japan, was able to successfully mix the genre with bits of psychedelia, hip-hop, and uplifting pop music.

From the 2000s onwards, indietronica hit the shores of Iceland

with the band “múm” and the jungles of Brazil with Júpiter Maçã, both of which being prominent voices in their respective countries.

As far as an Indietronica band you may be familiar with, there is LCD Soundsystem who combine dance-punk with the genre. There is also Animal Collective who loves to mix indie electronic with psychedelia.

Another band would be MGMT who create very addictive and anthemic pop songs. MGMT is notable for bringing the genre into the mainstream with their songs “Kids” and “Electric Feel.”

Indietronica has also found its way onto television screens. “Adventure Time” contains many short tunes played by the characters throughout the series that all involve elements of indietronica, with the main theme of the show being a prime example.

Songs you should check out if you are unfamiliar with this type of music are “My Girls” by Animal Collective, “Such Great Heights” by The Postal Service, “Free Fall” by Cornelius, “Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse” by Of Montreal, and “Black Cat” by Broadcast.

Each of these songs showcases the malleability of indietronica as a genre, where different musical styles from around the world can shine.

As the fall semester begins to end, that is when more college students begin to stress over finals and other big scholarly assignments. Everyone has their own techniques for dealing with their stress and this article targets those people who resort to music to ease their mind. This playlist includes songs from different genres such as punk, rock and emo-rap.

Rickets by Deftones -If the opening drums don’t fire you up then I don’t know what will. This song is the black sheep song that Deftones has ever made in terms of how dark it sounds compared to the rest of their music. I appreciate how this song includes pauses from the intense sound almost mimicking a rollercoaster.

Rise Above by Black Flag - The name of the song alone implies rebellion which is what the band Black Flag is known for in the punk community. This song is about taking charge against a higher power that only abuses the good. I included this song in the playlist because the defiant lyrics makes listeners feel like they are at a riot.

Paris by $uicide Boy$ - This rap duo is most known for their hype songs including lyrics about mental health, drug addiction, and death. The hard beat made by Scrim makes listeners want to scream the lyrics while moshing in a mosh-pit. The song is about how both Scrim and Ruby feel about their fame and their followers.

Scream by Black Flag - Compared to the other Black Flag song on this playlist, this song has a much slower tempo. This song reminds me of a teenage boy who was grounded and is ranting to his parents about how he feels. I included this song on the playlist because of how slow paced it is until the tone of the vocalist changes into anger and rage.

In My Eyes by Minor Threat - This playlist wouldn’t be called a rage playlist without one song from Minor Threat. The blend between the drumbeats and electric guitar amplifies the intensity of the vocals. Fun fact; “In My Eyes” is an anti-drug song.

Course registration for the spring semester is finally here, signifying that final exams are approaching.

This is single-handedly one of the scariest moments for a college student. Many students have already found a way to manage their stress, but some also haven’t. Here are some ways for you to relax without interfering with your final exam study time.

Wear your favorite clothing and make a statement.

Most college wardrobes include sweatshirts and sweatpants, so seeing someone who dresses nicely is kind of out of the ordinary. Wearing your favorite clothing or dressing nice can raise your confidence levels, giving individuals a certain flare as they go about their day. Spontaneously wearing something fancier than normal draws more attention from others, making you feel better. The positive attention will make you worry less about little things going on in your life so your immediate focus will be on final exams.

Get in a good cry session. Getting intact with your inner emotions can be beneficial in releasing all of your worries that you may have built up about taking finals. Putting on a “chick-flick” style movie can help spark up your emotion, allowing you to release some tears. Crying is known for being a way to selfsoothe yourself when facing different hardships throughout life.

Jam out to music in your car. Listening to certain genres such as punk or hype music can be appealing to your soul. Sometimes all a doctor needs to prescribe is simply screaming along to all your favorite songs to release your stress. A car is a very private place to sing away all of your problems in life. When you’re too focused on getting the lyrics right while following along to a song, you don’t have the time to think about how well you will do on finals. Due to

the fact that some people are shy, they may prefer solo jam sessions. But having friends there can take your focus away from academics for a chance to relax.

Hopefully these quick tips will allow you to de-stress a bit while you prepare for finals’ week. Remember to stay focused, and stay calm!

Thanksgiving recipes to satisfy your sweet tooth Levi Deitz Copy Editor lwd6487@lockhaven.edu It’s already November, which means it’s almost time for Thanksgiving. While all the main dishes like turkey and mashed potatoes are good, everyone knows desserts are the stars of the night. Here are two very special recipes that are sure to leave all of your guests stuffed and satisfied.

Sweet Potato Pie 1 lb Sweet Potato ½ cup butter, softened 1 cup white sugar ½ cup milk 2 eggs ½ tsp ground nutmeg ½ tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 (9 in) unbaked pie crust Step 1: Boil your sweet potatoes in their skin for 40 to 50 minutes. When done, put them under cold water and peel the skin off.

Step 2: Break the sweet potato apart in a bowl. Mix with butter in a mixer, then stir in the rest of the ingredients and mix on a medium speed until smooth. Then pour the mixture into the pie crust.

Step 3: Bake the pie at 350 degrees for 55 minutes to 1 hour, or until the knife comes out clean.

Step 2: Spread the sliced apples evenly in the pan. Stir remaining ingredients until well-mixed, and pour the mixture over the apples.

Step 3: Bake the apple crisp for 30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown.

Robinson Hall elevator trust issues Levi Deitz LWD6487@lockhaven.edu Copy Editor As Lock Haven University students, most of us have probably had a class in Robinson Hall, or at least been in the building.

Robinson Hall has seven floors, with two elevators on the first floor that go up to the sixth floor These elevators have come under some scrutiny for several odd occurrences.

I had never had a problem riding in these elevators before the fall 2021 semester. I currently have a class on the sixth floor of Robinson, and I don’t want to walk up all those stairs, so of course I choose to use the elevator. A few weeks ago, I pressed the button with a “6” on it like I always do, but when I went to the sixth floor, the door stayed closed, and the elevator returned to the first floor. I tried once again, but the same thing happened. At this point, I’m scared, so I choose to walk from the first floor to the sixth.

Other members of the Eagle Eye staff have had similar experiences. Kerri Hoover, news editor, had a similar experience to mine where the elevator did not stop on the sixth floor, and instead returned to the first floor. Another experience which involved Tess English, managing editor, and myself happened Thursday Nov. 4.

We were leaving a class on the sixth floor but neither elevator would arrive when the button was pressed. We eventually walked down to the fifth floor to try and get on there. The elevator opened, but all the buttons produced an orange light, and the elevator did not move. We exited and walked down the stairs.

I later found out in a class with Dr. Tara Mitchell, that this is not an uncommon occurrence. Mitchell called what happened to me being “kidnapped” by the elevator. In an interview, she offered up some extra information about the elevators. When asked if she felt safe riding in the elevators, she stated that she “Always carries her phone in case something happens” but added that she did not feel like the elevator was going to drop.

She also stated that she prefers the freight elevator that leads to the seventh floor where her office is located.

Mitchell also offered up a possible reason as to why the elevators act this way. She stated that she had been told by a

staff member that the type of elevators in Robinson are only able to handle about five to six floors, so the reason that they shake and act weird is because they are “pushing their limits”.

Even though I may not feel completely comfortable using the elevators, I don’t believe they will kill me, so I will continue to use them. I do think that Lock Haven should look into the problems with these elevators because safety of students, faculty, and guests should be of the utmost importance.

tion for me to watch every year. Despite its glaring flaws (like a nearly 40 year old James Stewart playing a high schooler), the joyous atmosphere and uplifting story hold this movie up above the rest for me.

Polar Express - Who doesn’t love a magic train that takes kids to the North Pole to see Santa Clause? I always look forward to seeing this movie every Christmas because it captures the true magic of Christmas. It also teaches kids that believing is seeing when it comes to Christmas.

The Santa Clause Trilogy - With Tim Allen starring as the protagonist, you will be sure to have a barrel of laughs as you watch this three movie collection. It’s also great to watch with the whole family.

Home Alone - This Christmas classic is an absolute necessity to watch every year. Not only does this movie have some great physical comedy, but it’s also full of genuine heart. Don’t watch past the second movie though, because it loses its charm.

Elf - This movie is funny with Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel. It teaches the viewers that you have to believe what you see when it comes to Christmas and believing in the magic of Christmas.

A Christmas Story - This movie is iconic, funny but also cringy in some areas because of how parents back then would punish their children versus now but all-together a good movie.

• Live Action Grinch - Jim Carey’s portrayal of the Grinch scared me as a child growing up. But that doesn’t mean the Christmas spirit was lost by the scarieness of the Grinch. Compared to the cartoon version of the movie, the live-action movie makes viewers feel a part of Whoville and their holiday celebration.

The Bald Eagles fly into the NCAA tournament boasting a 13-3-2 overall record and a 10-1-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) mark. Lock Haven claimed the regular season PSAC Eastern Division championship, and the 13 wins for the Bald Eagles mark the most since the 2007 season.

For LHU, it is the Bald Eagles first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2006, and an opponent in Post University which The Haven has never faced in its storied history. Last week, LHU took home some major awards from the PSAC office. Beckham Sibiski was named the Player of the Year in the Eastern Division, Samuel Hershey earned East Rookie of the Yea and head coach Patrick Long was honored as Eastern Division Coach of the Year.

Hershey leads the Bald Eagles and is second in the PSAC in goals with 13. Andrea DiSomma and Sibiski have both notched seven goals each. LHU’s high-flying offense ranks second in the conference with 43 total goals this season.

Sibiski leads all PSAC players and ranks fourth in all of Division II with 12 assists and Hershey trails him with

eight, which is good enough to tie him for fourth place in the conference. As a team the Bald Eagles rank second in the PSAC with 38 assists.
