LHU receives a Multimilliondollar grant Julie Stellfox LHU Media Contact jms833@lockhaven.edu

Lock Haven University, along with four other Pennsylvania universities, recently has been awarded a grant through the Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPSID). The 2.38 million dollar grant will help to change lives, create learning opportunities and promote the value of full inclusion for all community members. Erica Moore, associate professor and chair of the Department of Special Education is taking the lead and facilitating the initiative at LHU. “As a long-standing member of the local community and strong advocate for inclusive opportunities, I am thrilled to be collaborating with the Pennsylvania Inclusive Higher Education Consortium (PIHEC) and leading the initiative of creating a certificate program for young adults with an intellectual disability on the campus at LHU,” Moore said, “The grant funds will open doors in our area to collaborate with PK-12 schools in order to promote transition planning and provide opportunities for a high quality, inclusive post-secondary college experience. It’s certainly an exciting journey that will make a huge impact in highlighting the value of full inclusion through expansive learning opportunities.” The grant, awarded to Millersville University as the lead institution, is in collaboration with Lock Haven, Duquesne, Gwynedd Mercy and Temple Universities. Temple University’s Institute on Disabilities will serve as research coordinator. This significant collaboration was organized by the Pennsylvania Inclusive Higher Education Consortium (PIHEC). The grant will pay for sustaining five model initiatives and the development of new initiatives throughout the Commonwealth. PIHEC is dedicated to the mission of inclusive postsecondary education for young adults with intellectual disabilities,

a movement that began in the U.S. in the 1970s and has evolved toward robust authentic college experiences only in recent decades. As educational policy and practice have begun to reflect the essential right to equal opportunities for students with disabilities, so too have expectations increased for participation of students with intellectual disability in higher education. The overarching vision of the initiative is to design and support inclusive postsecondary learning within a higher education environment and allow students with intellectual disability to experience the myriad benefits of an authentic college experience. “The ongoing global discourse on how humanity can embrace diversity in all its forms and take meaningful action to abolish ‘otherness’ is brought front and center in this wonderful initiative,” said Dr. Ron Darbeau, provost and vice president for academic affairs at LHU, “Lock Haven University is proud to be part of expanding the reach of this program and to moving the needle in building better understanding and appreciation of differences, while simultaneously providing ladders of opportunity to an often overlooked and underserved, yet vital segment of our community.”

Sarah McBride set to become first transgender state senator Cassandra Keller News Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu

History will be made in January 2021 when Sarah McBride gets sworn in as a state senator of Delaware. McBride will become the first transgender state senetor. McBride came out as a transgender woman in her college’s student newspaper, The Eagle in 2011. She went on to intern at the white house in 2012, becoming the first openly transgender woman to work there in any capacity. In January 2013, McBride joined the board of directors of Equality Delaware and quickly became the state’s leading advocate for legal protections and hate crimes legislation for transgender Delawareans. In 2016, she published her book, Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality and gave a speech at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. In July 2019, McBride announced her candidacy for the Delaware Senate and won in the 2020 November vote with 73.3 percent of the votes. She is set to be sworn into the Delaware senate, replacing Democrat Harris McDowell III. On her website McBride said, “Despite the challenges we[Delawareans] face, I remain as hopeful as ever that we can make big change happen – because I’ve fought for it, I’ve seen it, and I’ve lived it.” To learn more about McBride, visit her website at: sarahmcbride.com/

Nov. 13, 2020 Ariana’s switching up “positions” with this new gem

Movie Quote: “Donkey, You Have The Right To Remain Silent. What You Lack Is The Capacity.”

Last weeks quote: The Great Gatsby

Kiara Carson knc9459@lockhaven.edu Editor-in-Chief

Ariana Grande has been known to produce amazing pop music over the course of a decade, but it doesn’t stop her from reaching for the stars. She continues to release golden tracks that almost anyone can relate and party to. Her newest album “Positions” follows about a year after her breakout hit album “thank u, next” and tells a totally different story about her life since then. Last year, she was engaged, then not, and then she lost a great love of hers, Mac Miller, which definitely shook her to her core but didn’t deter her from making her money. Grande takes her pain and uses it for inspiration to create music that sends out love and positivity to her fans. Within “Positions”, we are shown are freer and happier Ariana. Last year was filled with so much tragedy, it seems as though she’s used this album to heal and learn more about life. She seems more open about talking about her different experiences that she encountered within the past year but also wants to move on and look forward to the future. For example, her first song within the album “shut up” talks about letting all her past demons go and moving on from their negativity. She wants them to shut up so she can stop feelings so stuck in her depressive state and move on to liberation.

Grande also exhibits a more sexual feel in a couple of her songs like “34+35”, “nasty”, and “motive”. She also incorporates some romance with her tunes “love language”, “safety net”, and “off the table” which indicates that she’s learning to love once again. It’s absolutely exciting to see her growth and vulnerability that she’s gone through because she’s endured a lot of pain. The pain that haunted her would’ve crippled most people, and maybe behind closed doors she did have her moments, but now she’s back and better than ever. So, if you’re ever feeling down about anything (relationships, self-worth, etc.) then I suggest giving this album a chance to get you out of the negativity rut.

Krissy’s take on “War Room”

7 A&E Did you know that? Seth Rogen auditioned for the role of Dwight for NBC’s “The Office.”

Info courtesy of BuzzFeed.com Krissy Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor The movie “War Room” is a Christian-related film about a family that appears to be perfect with great jobs, a beautiful daughter and their dream house. Underneath the surface, there is a failing marriage and a husband experiencing all kinds of temptations with his work and other women. The wife is reduced to bitterness until she meets her newest client, and she is challenged to make a ‘war room’ in her home with a battle plan of prayer for her family. The wife tries to fight for her family while the husband struggles to decide if he will make amends with his family. This film was directed by Alex Kendrick, with the cast of Karen Abercrombie, Priscilla C. Shirer, T.C. Stallings, Alena Pitts, Michael Jr. and Alex Kendrick. This movie was released on August 28, 2015. I thought that the actors did a great job of playing their characters because they gave the movie a lot of power by showing the power of prayer and that people can’t control every situation without God. Additionally, the film teaches people how to pray and fight for the things that matter the most. I have personally learned how to pray from my friends and from my grandmother; my faith has gotten much stronger because of it. I even got to enjoy my first retreat with my Christian group at Lock Haven University, which is called New Life. It was a lot of fun and really refreshing. I learned so much about God and Suffering, and I felt like my faith was built even stronger and I was more open about my feelings instead of keeping quiet about my feelings. This is where I felt I could relate most to the movie, and I believe others can feel the same. An interesting fact about “War Room” is that the girl who played the daughter in the movie, Alena Pitts, is actually Priscilla’s niece. There was already a connection between them, but that isn’t why Alena was cast in the movie. Make sure you check out this film!

How to relax after elections

Tess English tae7002@lockhaven.edu Online Manager It has been an all around stressful year from pandemic outbreak, shifting to online learning, and to top it all off it’s an election year. Not to mention the political tensions in this country are at an all time high in the millennia. Even though there are some outstanding court cases and a few outstanding recounts the election has been called most news outlets. Regardless of who you voted for the election most of the post election stress is over. If you’re struggling to relax here are a few helpful ways to unwind. Re-watch your favorite show- The comfort of a time before COVID and great way to escape for a little bit. The repetition will be calming, no twists, no turns, and no waiting on Nevada to count ballots, just utter familiarity. Turn off social media for a bit- With two political parties still both clashing on social media, it might be best just to stay off for a little bit. It’ll keep you out of the trouble in getting into a pointless Twitter fight.

Indulge a little snack- Chocolate in particular releases endorphins, which stimulate happiness, in the brain. Even though chocolate is the recommended treat, feel free to get crazy with it and pick your choice treat whether it be salty or sweet. Take a spa day- Get yourself a facial mask, get the files for some mani/pedi action, some incense, and some fruit for some flavored water. A little stay at home spa treatment is great way to relax especially if you can treat yourself to a robe and some comfy slippers.

Thanksgiving or Christmas? Kristin Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor

I think we can all agree that both Thanksgiving and Christmas will be a little different this year because of the COVID virus and we might not be having as many family gatherings as we have in previous years. As exciting as Thanksgiving can get with gathering with family, having a feast and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, I think that Christmas might be even more exciting because that’s the one holiday where we give and receive presents. I certainly did start my christmas shopping a little early for my parents, my grandmother, my sister, my aunt and for myself. Whenever I go home, I have to listen to my sister obsess about Christmas and listen to her play Christmas music all the time. I have to give her grief though because she was born on Christmas day and I would do the same thing if I were born on Christmas Day. I also have a friend who was born on Christmas Eve. I don’t mind listening to Christmas music all year round because I love listening to Michael Buble when I go to bed. I think that Christmas is also a time to make memories as well. Some of the best memories that I have on Christmas is watching Hallmark movies with my family, watching the Grinch movies with my family as well as a whole bunch of other Christmas movies while snuggled up in front of my grandmother’s fireplace, making cookies and listening to Christmas. When my sister and I were little, we used to go outside to play in the snow and make snowmen. I remember trying to build a whole army of little snowmen, but I couldn’t build them all myself, making snow angels with my

sister, sledding down the hill right beside our grandmother’s house and helping my grandmother pull down Christmas decorations after Thanksgiving from the very cold attic in the garage. Christmas is also a time where the most traditions are made. Every year, I make my family watch the Grinch movies, we drive around and look at all of the Christmas decorations in our neighborhood, we open one present on Christmas Eve and open the rest on Christmas Day and we celebrate Christmas at our house and go down to my Aunt and Uncle’s house in Frenchville to celebrate my sister’s birthday.

Mail-In Voting Controversy Kerri Hoover kah4338@lockhaven.edu Ad/Design Manager & Sports Editor

The year 2020 has been a year like no other. From the never-ending Coronavirus pandemic to the disastrous California wildfires and the life-altering presidential election, this hasn’t been our year. Speaking of monumental presidential elections, 2020 didn’t seem like the year to push for mail-in voting and post-election day ballot acceptance. I understand that some Americans were fearful of potentially being exposed to COVID at polling locations on election day which was the whole publicized reason for stressing the importance of mail-in voting. However, why didn’t this matter back in the spring during the primary election when COVID was at its prime and people weren’t required to wear masks in public? Plus, polling places had plenty of COVID protocols in place to prevent possible exposure. It’s understandable that mail-in voting was supposed to help prevent long lines on election day. However, that still didn’t encourage enough people to skip voting in-person. In my small voting district within Central PA, people waited in line nearly two hours to cast their vote in-person. Imagine larger districts with more than 2000 registered voters who had the chance to vote in-person but decided against it. Why did this happen? I suspect COVID isn’t the reason here. It’s because President Donald J. Trump is running for re-election, and left-wing radicals demonize him to the point where they are willing to push the limits towards his impeachment or deter his re-election. Mail-in voting and post-election day ballot acceptance can be seen as more than problematic because it leaves possibility for voter fraud. So far, there’s been accounts of disappearing ballots, ballots thrown in the trash, and increased numbers of non-registered voters. There have even been deceased people’s names on a number of mail ballots. Additionally, there has been an increased number of naked ballots. Coincidence? I think not.

Not to mention the suspicions of some states, including Pennsylvania, that halted their ballot counting after a Trump lead was detected. With several news stations projecting candidate victories before polling locations even closed and ballots were counted, this created an opening for dishonest people to find a way to cheat the system and potentially hurt the possible front-runner candidate. The 2020 presidential election is the most crucial election of our lives thus far, and some people are willing to go to great, unethical lengths to ensure their favorite candidate wins. Post-election day ballot acceptance never should have been allowed in the first place. If someone didn’t vote by mail or in-person after having months to do so, that’s their own problem and they don’t get to vote like every other year. If someone was afraid to or couldn’t vote in person, then vote absentee like every other year. Sure, 2020 has been a year like no other, but it doesn’t need to end this way. I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m completely opposed to the projected “president elect.” Judge me as you wish, but I don’t believe this race is over. My Trump sign still stands proudly in my yard, as well as many other Trump supporters in my area. Because of mail-in voting and post-election day ballot acceptance, I think the race has been rigged in favor of Biden. I’ve experienced a Trump rally. I know first hand the thousands of supporters he has. So to me, it makes no sense as to why Biden is the projected winner … well, besides fraud. For everything that the President has endured within the past four years, constantly fighting the left wishing to tear him apart, he deserves to challenge the poll projections and claim the title that he well deserves. Trump called it from the beginning that there would be voter fraud, and once again he was right.

NFL post-game report and early Super Bowl predictions Brittany Robertson Staff Writer bnr888@lockhaven.edu

Happy November! Here is a review of this past week in the NFL:

New England Patriots - 30 New York Jets - 27

Green Bay Packers - 34 San Francisco 49ers - 17

Nick Folk’s 51 yard field goal as time expired helped the Patriots secure their win! This was the Monday Night football game.

Green Bay’s QB had a great game with 25/31 for 305 yards and four touchdowns. Pittsburgh Steelers - 24 Dallas Cowboys - 19

Denver Broncos - 24 Atlanta Falcons - 37

The Steelers hold their place as the lone undefeated team left in the NFL.

It was Broncos’ QB Drew Lock’s first game and he didn’t do great but didn’t do bad either. Drew needs to find a spark for the Broncos’ offense.

Houston Texans - 27 Jacksonville Jaguars - 25

Inside the NFL: A Super early Super Bowl Prediction

The Texans hold off for another win.

As we get closer to the end of the regular season; we start to make our “unofficial’’ predictions on which teams could be heading to post season play. Each week, there will be a “early bird’’ Super bowl prediction.

New Orleans Saints - 38 Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 3 Drew Brees has a solid team this year with the Saints and held Tom Brady and Gronk to a mere three points for the entire game. Buffalo Bills - 44 Seattle Seahawks - 34 Buffalo kept it interesting for the Seahawks this week.

For Week 1 of Super Bowl Predictions: Buffalo Bills vs New Orleans Saints I have a lot of faith in Drew Brees leading his team to post season play. Buffalo is looking like a strong contender. Both teams had great weeks of play. Drew was able to hold Tom Brady to three points during their game. Buffalo toughened up the Seahawks defense. It could be an interesting matchup.

Chase Elliott wins big in 2020 NASCAR Cup Series championship Kerri Hoover Ad/Design Manager & Sports Editor kah4338@lockhaven.edu

Chase Elliott became the third-youngest Cup Series champion in NASCAR history on Sunday Nov. 8 after winning his first title during the Series Finale 500 at Phoenix Raceway. With a margin of victory of just 2.74 seconds, Elliott secured the win over his fellow contender Brad Keselowski, who was looking to claim his second series title. The top contenders for the race also included Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin, and Jimmie Johnson. Initially, Elliott had a rough start on the mile-long Arizona track. After he failed prerace inspections multiple times, Elliott was forced to start the race from the back along with competitor Brennan Poole. However once the race began, Elliott had no problem overcoming his pre-race obstacles. After completing 75 laps, Elliott ranked third at the end of Stage 1. One hundred and fifteen laps later at the end of Stage 2, Elliott secured a second place spot. It was not until the final stage of the race that Elliott saw his first chance of victory as he led for 108 out of the 122 remaining laps. In total, Elliott led the most laps of 153 during the 312 mile long race. Third place finisher, Logano, had the second most lap leads of 125. Not only did Elliott secure his first Cup Series championship, but he, along with his father, Bill Elliott, also became the third father-son duo in sports history to both win a Cup Series title. Elliott’s father won the Cup Series championship in 1988. They join fel-

low NASCAR Hall of Famers, Lee and Richard Petty along with Ned and Dale Jarrett, in sharing the family achievement. “I’m at a loss for words; this is unbelievable,” Elliott said during a post-race interview with a NASCAR staff reporter. “Oh, my gosh. We did it. I mean, we did it...This is a moment I’ve dreamed about. This is all I’ve wanted to do is be a race car driver and race in NASCAR. To be honest, I’m humbled.” The 2021 Cup Series is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 14 at the Daytona International Speedway.
