Eagle Eye releases new newsletter, entitled “Hot Off the Presses” Eagle Eye Staff lockhaveneagleeye@gmail.com

The Eagle Eye (EE) Staff is pleased to announce the first edition of the club newsletter, “Hot off the Presses” will be released next Monday at 6 PM EST. “Hot Off The Presses” will be a publication that will be released every fall and spring semester to update readers about club activity and will be located on our WordPress website.

This publication will help readers understand what happens behind the newsroom doors. Content will include a letter from the editors generally addressing our readers, a meet the staff section, the next semester’s publishing schedule, goals for the club, and much more.

The goal of the newsletter is to bridge communication from the staff to its readership.

Transparency is key to any effective news outlet, and that is what our organization is striving for.

Check out the EE Twitter and Instagram for pending early previews and updates.

Additionally, our social media is where readers may weigh in or give feedback about content they’d like to see put into the publication.

Nintendo released the first and last major update content for Animal Crossing: New Horizons and dropped the Happy Home Paradise DLC.

The update itself included much necessary quality of life. Fans could breathe a sigh of relief knowing they could squeeze in between furniture, have their storage expanded (finally), and the convenience of purchasing another ABD for island use. Additionally, being able to hang ceiling decor and have accent walls was every home designers dream.

While there were many quality features brought to the game, it was not without its f laws. The Roost was one of the more promising updates.

Brewster is a returning favorite.

However, the cafe doesn’t host minigames as it did in the past. This leaves the area a little lacking in excitement.

There is not much benefit to going to The Roost other than to maybe take some cute pics. A simple solution like making coffees, similar to fruits in that they give your strength to lift trees or break rocks, would add a layer of appeal. Alas, there is no such luck. Maybe another update will give us the answers as to why The Roost was brought back, other than in aesthetic alone.

One of the key features brought via the update was a shopping center at Harv’s Island. There are a total of seven shops to raise funds to open on the island. This is

all swell and dandy, and many players even ground the money beforehand. However, a nuance of this setup is once a donation goal is met for a shop, donations to all other shops close.

This means it takes a week minimum to put in all the bells necessary to complete the shopping center. The week of waiting to set the shops up is fine. Annoying, but that’s life. The fact they close donations to other shops rather than just queuing them to update in order of donations seems rather silly. The combination of those two elements is what makes this feature frustrating.

Then of course there is the DLC content. Which all rather great: working a job, the cute uniform, and nearly endless hours of content. All perfect minus one thing, there is another currency brought to gameplay.

There is Poki, the money you can use to buy furniture on the work island. While this might be neat or cute to some, it feels like niche currency in and of itself. Now, considering it is perhaps the least of three currencies available to you in the game it becomes even less desirable.

Players do have the option to trade Poki for Bells, but it requires you to buy another ABD to unlock the feature. If game creators wish to f lood the markets, exchanging currency should be a free feature rather than one players have to shell out their bells for.

This is the first article for the new series of the A&E section where certain music genres are explained. In this article, the grunge music genre will be discussed and all aspects that go along with it too.

When you think of grunge, the early 90s’ era should come to mind.

There is also a 90s’ grunge aesthetic which is known as “heroin chic.”

Now it’s time to dive into everything grunge.

Grunge is known for killing the 80s’ hairspray rock and introducing a heavy/dark blend of punk and metal. It is referred to as the Seattle sound. The Seattle sound can be described as angsty, dark, and feminist lyrics with a reliance on the use of bass and electric guitar.

Bands such as Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, and Screaming Trees are known for their grunge sound and for popularizing this sound of music. All five bands were inspired by the sound of the Melvins, who is the first band known to incorporate that grunge sound.

The signature voices of grunge are Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, and Mark Lanegan. Independent record label from Seattle, Sub Pop, is known for pushing the grunge movement.

The meaning of the word grunge isn’t too appealing to refer to music being dirt, scum but it reflects the self-deprecation of the band members at that time. During this era, many artists were abusing various drugs, specifically heroin which ties into the 90s’ “heroin chic” aesthetic.

In the song “Junkhead” by Alice in Chains, the song expresses their thoughts on drug abuse and how one can’t understand the mind of a drug user until they become one themselves.

Once the sound became mainstreamed in the early 90s’ it changed the lives of many Seattle bands. For example, many fans of Nirvana believe that the fame ultimately ended the life of lead singer/ guitarist Kurt Cobain.

Around mid 90s’ is when the sound of grunge became more silent in terms of popularity but still is appreciated for its mark in music history.

Food and music go hand in hand with each other.

Both satisfy our brains and give us pleasure (well, most of the time). With that sentiment in mind, it would only be obvious to make music about food.

From sweet fruits to tender beef, this is a music playlist for those with a wide and tasteful palette.

1. Beef Rap by MF DOOM: DOOM If there is one thing MF DOOM loved more than rapping, it was food. Heck, he dedicated a whole album to food and drink called “Mm.. Food.” His creative food-filled wordplay starts to make you hungry, not just for something to eat but also for more of DOOM’s music.

2. Tutti Fruity by Little Richard: Richard The only thing I think of when I hear this song is “sugar rush” because it gives you as much energy as a sugar rush.

Little Richard sure knows how to bring down the house with this classic rock ‘n’ roll song.

3. Just Like Honey by Jesus and the Mary Chain: Chain Isn’t it ironic that a bitter and gothic band like Jesus and the Mary Chain would make a sweet yet dissonant love song? They’re not anything like honey really.

4. Pork and Beans by Weezer: Weezer “I’ll eat my candy with the pork and beans.” The odd line coming from Rivers Cuomo, but I guess he will eat whatever he wants.

5. Strawberry Fields Forever by the Beatles: Beatles Does anybody truthfully despise the Beatles? Yeah, they are overplayed, but that is not without reason. They undeniably excelled in creativity, and no other track does better than this fruit-filled trip of a song!

6. Green Onions by Booker T. and the MGs: MGs A rhythm and blues staple, “Green Onions” showcases an excessive swagger among itself. But, just like an onion, there are more layers underneath that first part. There comes out a playfulness, a danceable rhythm, and something of a warmth to it. At least this track won’t leave you with bad breath.

7. Lollipop (Ode to Jim) by Alvvays: Alvvays This is a sweet track from Canadian band Alvvays with lots of fitting allusions to candy. The line “lollipop in my hair” refers to the singer having this boy stuck in her head. This song would be a lollipop in my hair because I can’t get it out!

8. Stir Fry by Migos: Migos A repetitive yet addicting track that requires the listener to keep coming back to fully appreciate its atmosphere. Not too dissimilar to stir fry itself!

Preparing for moving out Kit Taveras Lifestyles Editor mxt9438@lockhaven.edu As the end of November approaches, so does Thanksgiving break. November 22 is the scheduled move-out date and many may find themselves stressed out or overwhelmed on how to prepare for when they will be inevitably booted from the dorms. Listed below are several tips to make the whole process a lot less heavy on your shoulders.

1. Don’t wait until the last minute. Though seemingly the most evident, this is also one of the most important things to keep in mind. Rushing on the move-out date will only bring you stress, especially if you have prior engagements like classes on the day of. Start the packing process perhaps a few days beforehand, even if it only involves a little bit of packing at a time. You’ll find that even a little progress will add up in the end.

2. Make sure your room is clean. Especially if you plan to leave appliances in the dorms over the break, it’s important to make sure they’re nice and sparkling before you leave. Remove leftover food from your mini fridge and unplug whatever is going to stay. Since your room is going to be checked after you leave it’s much better to have a spotless reputation (and doing so would save you a few infractions, as well).

3. Decide what you want to take with you. At present, students are to return to dorms after Thanksgiving break has concluded. This means you don’t need to take everything with you. Take your essentials like some clothes and hygiene products (and perhaps course material that will require your attention over the break) but don’t empty your room entirely. You won’t have to move out completely until after finals week.

4. Make a plan for the date, and be prepared in case things go awry. If you need a ride, get one before the move-out date. Where are you going? What are you packing your things in? What time are you going to

leave? What happens if your scheduled ride decides to dip out at the last minute? Be prepared for these situations and lighten the hassle required on the move-out date. The last thing anyone wants is to be stuck with nothing to do ten minutes prior to the dorms closing.

Remember to play it smart, and not to procrastinate.

Hopefully these tips will help you as you begin the process of moving out at the end of November.

Thanksgiving is coming in a couple of weeks, which means that everyone will be gathering with their families and friends watching football on TV and playing sports outside with loved ones.

The normal traditions for Thanksgiving are usually having dinner with family and friends, watching football on TV, playing football outside or watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. With COVID-19 and the flu still circulating there’s no telling if these traditions will change or if people will still keep to them. Some others, however, might be running a turkey trot, saying what you’re thankful for, taking a nap, shopping on Black Friday or volunteering at a food drive.

My family has many traditions every year that we look forward to. My sister and I look forward to watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV every year. She likes to see the balloons and I like seeing some of the balloons and celebrities that appear. My sister and I rotate houses as well for Thanksgiving dinner. We have dinner at two of our grandparents’ houses, sometimes three if our grandparents on our mother’s side are in town and then we go to our aunt Beth’s house. Another tradition we celebrate every year is when my grandmother has me help her get Christmas decorations out of the attic and decorate for Christmas once Thanksgiving is over.

Starbucks’s Holiday Drinks Kassidee Wozniak Kbw191@lockhaven.edu Online Editor When the month of October ends, expect many businesses to release their holiday themed products. Specifically, Starbucks’ brought back their signature holiday red cups along with six different holiday inspired beverages.

Disclaimer I have not tried every drink on this list and for the drinks I haven’t tried I will judge them based off their descriptions.

1. Iced Sugar Cookie Almond Milk Latte- Currently every Starbucks I have been to, this drink is sold out. Luckily for me, I had the opportunity to try it and it was a lifechanger, meaning it’s my new favorite beverage at Starbucks. This drink is number one because of the authentic and recognizing flavor of a sugar cookie and the green, red, and white sprinkles add sweetness plus beautify the drink.

2. Chestnut Praline Latte- If you are a fan of nutty flavors, you will love this drink. The flavor is a mix of roasted caramelized chestnuts and spices which screams that the holiday season is here. Before trying the iced sugar cookie almond milk latte, this drink was my go-to for the holiday season, which is why this drink is ranked second.

3. Irish Cream Cold Brew- I applaud Starbucks for adding this drink to their menu for all their vanilla cold brew fans because this flavor is underrated. The Irish cream flavor is an amped up version of the classic vanilla flavor.

This drink is ranked third in this list because of how classic the flavor is, and the hint of cocoa adds that seasonal touch.

4. Caramel Brulée Latte- If you want to enhance your caramel latte experience, this drink is for you. I have not tried this drink yet because so many people say it’s overly sweet with the added caramel brulée bits. I ranked this drink fourth because I am a fan of caramel lattes, but I probably will not go out of my way to have an extra sweet caramel beverage.

5. Toasted White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino- This drink reminds me of the richer cousin of the classic hot chocolate drink. The last time I had a Frappuccino from

Starbucks would be about eight years ago when I was in middle school. It’s a blended beverage featuring roasted coffee, caramelized white chocolate flavor topped with whipped cream, sugar sparkles and white pearls. This drink is ranked fifth because I’m not a fan of frappuccinos, but the flavor of the drink seems promising.

6. Peppermint Mocha Latte- If you are a fan of mint chocolate, you need to try this drink. People are normally 50-50 on this drink meaning they either love it or hate it.

I am a part of people who despise this drink. The peppermint reminds me too much of my toothpaste and mixing that flavor with rich chocolate… it’s a no for me. I ranked this drink last because I dislike the blend of peppermint and chocolate in my coffee.

Thanksgiving shouldn’t be celebrated Alex Ross Amr1884@lockhaven.edu A&E Section Editor Every fourth Thursday in November in the United States, families celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving. It is rooted in history as a festival for the harvesting of crops in the Fall season and is a way to bring together families to feast one last time before the Winter season is brought up in the North Hemisphere.

However, there is some contention that the holiday is also rooted in the genocide of Native Americans by colonists throughout the 17th century. For this reason, we should not celebrate Thanksgiving at all.

The history of Native Americans in North America has been wrought with devastation after tragedy. They have been going through this horrific cycle of repression and suppression for over 400 years by the British, Spanish and Americans. Every bit of land was stolen, and much of the Native population was murdered by foreign and seemingly lawless individuals. After all of that, these foreigners decide to celebrate as a call for unity among themselves and the Natives (or at least that is how it’s taught in school across America)? What absurd and dark kind of humor is that?

While ironic and seemingly unrealistic to many white U.S. citizens today, it is a reality to many Native Americans to this day. Having your family history and heritage be pushed around, tarnished and be touted by white foreigners as a holiday of togetherness is an insult to say the least. On top of this, many are ignorant of this history. Even if they are well aware of it, they will push it back away like a bad thought, wishing it to go away.

Simply asking people to “put yourself in their shoes” is not going to do enough, because they still won’t understand the pain, the loss and the fear many of these people felt and are still feeling. The only way to change this thinking is to shift the school systems into teaching Natives experiences of the time. Having this form of education, a.k.a. critical race theory, within schools to teach varying perspectives of history can and will effectively guide people in the U.S. to understand why these viewpoints exist.

While the story of Thanksgiving is long, complex, brutal and largely forgotten by most U.S. citizens, the only reason it is celebrated is out of habit. If more people began to understand the roots of the holiday were planted by horrifying and unforgiving

murderers, then less people would be willing to celebrate such an event. Thanksgiving should not exist as a day of celebration.

Rather, it should be seen as a day of mourning for every innocent Native life lost in American history.

The No. 21 Lock Haven University men’s soccer team gets set for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) semifinal-matchup with the Golden Knights of Gannon University.

Friday’s match, along with the remaining games of the tournament, will be hosted by Western Division No. 1 seed Mercyhurst and is set for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff time.

The Haven closed the regular season with f lair and ride a seven-game winning streak into Friday’s semifinal.

For LHU, it marks the longest win streak in 20 years, dating back to the 2001 season.

LHU, the PSAC Eastern Division regular season champion, enters the postseason with a 13-2-2 overall record and a 10-1-1 mark in PSAC play. Lock Haven claimed the regular season PSAC Eastern Division championship, and the 13 wins for the Bald Eagles mark the most since the 2007 season. It also marks the Bald Eagles return to the PSAC playoffs for the first time since November 3, 2015, where the Bald Eagles fell to Bloomsburg in an overtimethriller.

On Tuesday, the Bald Eagles made the jump to the No. 21 spot in the United Soccer Coaches national poll. For LHU, the return to the rankings was their first since the 2007 season.

The Bald Eagles enter the 2021 PSAC Championship with a decorated history in the tournament. LHU is tied with East Stroudsburg for the most titles in PSAC history with 20 conference championships. The next closest PSAC school is Slippery Rock with eight. The Bald Eagles last conference title came in 2004 when The Haven beat West Chester 2-0.

Samuel Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./McCaskey) leads the Bald Eagles and is second in the PSAC in goals with 13.

Andrea DiSomma (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) and

Beckham Sibiski (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown H.S.) both sit tied for seventh in the PSAC with seven apiece. LHU’s high-f lying offense ranks second in the conference with 43 total goals this season.

Sibiski leads all PSAC players and ranks third in all of Division II with 12 assists and Hershey trails him with eight, which is good enough to tie him for fourth place in the conference. As a team the Bald Eagles rank second in the PSAC with 38 assists.

LHU’s goalkeeper Aitor Ruiz de Eguilaz (Euskadi, Spain/Koldo Mitxelena (Robert Morris)) ranks among the leaders in the conference in save percentage (4th) and total save (5th). The junior has also been named the PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Week an impressive three times this season.

NBA star Enes Kanter criticizes Nike over its lack of global activism Kerri Hoover Kah4338@lockhaven.edu Ad/Design Editor and News Editor NBA basketball player Enes Kanter openly criticized Nike in a tweet on Oct. 25 for not protesting against China’s injustices.

Kanter posted a three-minute video on T witter calling out the athletic footwear manufacturing giant for its lack of g lobal activism. While he acknowledged the fact that Nike takes initiative to address American-related injustices, Kanter specif ically focused on the company’s lack of attention in drawing awareness to similar injustices experienced in China.

“Nike remains vocal about injustice here in America, but when it comes to China, Nike remains silent,” Kanter stated in the video.

He also included the hashtags #HypocriteNike and #EndUyghurForcedLabor in his tweet on Oct. 25. The hashtags began trending on T witter, with hundreds of people following suit to fur ther draw attention to Nike’s actions. Since initially releasing the video, Kanter received over 592,000 views, 39,000 likes, 10,000 retweets, and 1,300 quoted retweets.

Kanter fur ther remarked that, “You [Nike] do not address police br utality in China. You do not speak about discrimination against the LGBTQ community.

You did not say a word about the oppression of the minorities in China. You are scared to speak up.”

One day af ter his initial tweet, Kanter took to Instag ram where he posted six images of white basketball sneakers reading “Made with slave labor. No more excuses. Hypocrite Nike. Moder n day slaves.” The Boston Celtics center wore these sneakers during a game against the Charlotte Hor nets on Oct. 24 to symbolize his anti-slaver y sediments in opposition of Nike.

He also called out Nike co-owner Phil Knight, tagging him in the post, suggesting that he would book plane tickets to China on behalf of him that way he [Knight] could “visit these SL AVE labor camps and you can see

it with your own eyes.”

According to Spor ts Illustrated, Nike has not responded to Kanter’s social media comments. However, the company did release a statement earlier in the year claiming that it does not source products from the [Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous R egion] and we have conf ir med with our contract suppliers that they are not using textiles or spun yar n from the region.”

R egardless of Nike’s unresponsiveness, Kanter continues to use social media as a platfor m for activism against Chinese injustices, highly favoring the Uyghur minorities in the countr y. In most recent news, Kanter is advocating for the boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics due the the lack of human rights g ranted by Chinese authorities.
