Dancing with the LHU Dance Consort club

Cassandra Keller Managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu

The LHU Dance Consort club is one of the many clubs offered at Lock Haven that has made a comeback after the Covid-19 pandemic shut the campus down. Julianne Wrightstone is the current Dance Consort club president. At the end of every semester, the club puts on a performance that showcases the student dancers and choreographers. The performances range anywhere from modern dance to belly dancing. Wrightstone said, “We try to do a bunch of different styles. Normally, the majority of them are lyrical and modern, but we try to throw in hip-hop, tap, and even belly dancing.” This semester, the showcase will be on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are free to anyone interested. All you have to do is register ahead of time by emailing the club officers. Outside of dance, the club participates in campus-run events such as the homecoming golf-cart parade. They even won the award for “Most creative” golf-

cart in 2019. Currently, the Dance Consort club has about 20 members. With the dance minor at LHU getting cut recently, the club has lost more members. Wrightstone said, “In recent years, all of our arts clubs have lost funding… So, I think it’s important to have dance here in some capacity.” All students interested in joining the Dance Consort are welcome to try out at auditions at the beginning of the semester. Morgan Houser, the Dance Consort treasurer, said, “It’s really inclusive. You don’t need to have any dance background to join.” Students are also welcome to join by reaching out to a club officer or going to the club’s instagram @lhudanceconsort. Wrightstone said, “Just try it. It’s fun and you might find out you like it.” For the full interview, find the LHU Dance Consort Club Feature on YouTube.

Nov. 5, 2021 Villenueve’s “Dune” (2021): A marvelous slow-burning epic Alex Ross A&E Section Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu “Dune” was the blockbuster Warner Bros. was banking on. A large, expensive, sci-fi, action f lick with a dense and admittedly difficult story to follow is what Warner Bros had hoped would be their hit of the year, last year. The original release date for “Dune” was Nov. of 2020, but that did not happen due to COVID-19. Warner kept pushing it back, hoping for the moment in time where theaters would be back up and running and they can hopefully at least make their money back. After a year, they decided to let the thing play in theaters and at homes through their HBO Max streaming service. As a fan of Denis Villeneuve, director of “Prisoners,” “Blade Runner 2049,” and “Arrival,” I was anticipating this film for a very long time. Not just because he is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting and competent directors today, but finally being able to see a decent adaptation of the immense and complex “Dune” book by Frank Herbert made me ecstatic. If you are in the know, you will have realized this isn’t the first time someone tried to adapt the story, as auteur director and all-around weirdo David Lynch tried (and failed) to tell the story through the film medium.

Villeneuve’s version is not nearly as messy or boring as Lynch’s, however. While yes, it is very slow and may not hold everyone’s interest for the entire runtime, 2021’s “Dune” is masterful in its beauty, world building, and storytelling. The budget was clearly well spent as the movie looks very expensive. The budget for the filming was 135 million dollars, but my guess would have been at least double that. But that is not to say the value of this movie is simply in the production value. The story and characters are rich with personality and intrigue. The story can be hard to follow, but if you really push yourself to get into it and understand the world, then you will be greatly rewarded by the end. Even if you don’t know what exactly is going on in the story, the characters are enough to keep you engaged. “Dune” expertly tells its expansive story comprehensively without dumbing itself down for both book and film audiences. Almost any other director outside of Villeneuve wouldn’t be able to handle its scale, and that is what makes it so impressive. While not the easiest watch, “Dune” is easy to recommend to any film or science fiction fan.

Nov. 5, 2021 Our “Cuddled up and Cozy” Playlist Kassidee Wozniak Online Editor kbw181@lockhaven.edu Goodbye October and welcome the month of November which means the end of playlists containing dark music. November is the month where families get together and embrace each other’s company. This playlist will emulate the feeling of comfort with feel-good songs. 1. Archie, Marry Me by Alvvays: Alvvays The band, Alvvays, is more underground and I believe their music deserves more recognition. This song is about reassuring your partner those whatever hardships they are facing will not impact their love for each other. I personally find the blend between the vocals and electric guitar satisfying to my ears which is another reason why this song is on the playlist. 2. Pretty Girl by Clairo: Clairo Indie songs have always been comforting to me from their low budget and raw sound. This song is so popular for its candid, up-tempo beat behind the lyrics of essentially changing yourself to seek approval from your partner that you’re a “pretty girl”. I added this song to the playlist because of the indie feel this song gives off. 3. Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles: If this song doesn’t put you in a tles good mood or give instant serotonin,

I don’t know what other song will. Not only is this song beloved by many generations but the song features a whimsical acoustic guitar sound that compliments the easy-going lyrics. This song was added because it reassures listeners that everything will be alright when the sun comes out, “Here comes the sun, doo-doo-doodoo, here comes the sun, and I say it’s all right”. 4. Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac: Mac Stevie Nicks’ way of storytelling with this song about the old Welsh witch, Rhiannon, reminds me of gathering around to listen to my grandpop’s stories. That element alone makes this song comforting in the way you understand the story of Rhiannon. Fleetwood Mac’s genre is a combination of rock and simple blues. 5. Uptown Girl by Billy Joel: Joel Another song that is popular among all generations. If you didn’t know, an uptown girl means a girl who is rich and has a life full of luxury. The song is about someone who has a crush on someone out of their league aka the uptown girl. This song was added to the playlist for its timelessness sound it leaves listeners.

What to wear on Thanksgiving Kassidee Wozniak Online Editor kbw191@lockhaven.edu

This year Thanksgiving is Nov. 26, which means there’s only three weeks to plan your outfit for the holiday. If you are not sure what to wear to a Thanksgiving party and general fashion tips for the fall, this article is perfect for you! The items listed will range from articles of clothing to accessories, etc. Turtleneck. Not only are turtlenecks fashion forward, but they also give others the impression you are a well put together person. The month of November is very cold which gives people the excuse to bundle up and wear more layers. Adding a turtleneck under your sweater will not only keep you warm but will also please the fashion police. Beanie. Beanies come in handy for windy days and honestly when people are too lazy to do anything with their hair. They also can accent your outfit by bringing color to your neutral-colored outfit. Matching your beanie to your outfit is not an uncommon thing to do. Jean jacket. Jean jackets can add a vintage look to your outfit and are wonderful for layering during the colder seasons. You can style a jean jacket with any other article of clothing which makes them essential for everyone’s wardrobe. I recommend wearing a sweater with an oversized jean jacket to not only stay warm but fashionable. Flannel. Flannels are a necessity for everyone’s wardrobe especially in the fall where it’s moderately cold. They come in all different colors and patterns which makes styling them easy. Be prepared for someone to call you a lumberjack or ask if you listen to grunge music.

Boots. Just like flannels, there are different styles of boots which helps planning outfits easier. Long boots look wonderful over the top of jeans and emphasizes your legs. With that concept in mind, wearing brown boots will blend nicely with light blue jeans.

Scheduling for a new semester Kerri Hoover Ad/Design Editor and News Editor kah4338@lockhaven.edu

It’s that time of year again. It’s getting close to the end of the current semester and students need to secure their classes for the next. This article will give students at LHU everything they need to complete their scheduling for the coming semester. The first thing that you need to do is to check what time and day you are able to start scheduling. To find this out, you can go to your MyHaven account and navigate to “Course Schedule and Registration”. Then you should change the term to whatever semester you are signing up for. You should then see a window that states whether your registration time is open or closed. If it is closed, it will tell you what time your registration opens. To change your registration status from “closed” to “open” you need to be cleared by your advisor. If you don’t know who your academic advisor is you can check this on the “Academic Information” page on MyHaven. Once you know who your advisor is, contact them in order to set up a scheduling meeting. During your meeting, be sure to ask any questions that you have. After your meeting is scheduled, it would be a good idea to check what classes you need for your major. Conveniently, each major has a web page on LHU’s website with access to a checklist that outlines each major’s essential classes. Some of them even list every class available in that major. You should keep a copy of this checklist so that you can keep track of what classes you’ve already taken. Now, it’s time to schedule your classes. Under the “Course Schedule and Registration” tab on MyHaven, you’ll notice a window that allows you to search for classes. Make sure that you have it set to the correct semester, and select your major where it says “Department”, and click “search”. This will bring up a list of classes in your major that are being offered next semester. You can add up to 18 credits, which is usually equal to six classes per semester, though you can go as low as four.

After you’ve added the classes you need for your major, be sure to pick up an elective or two to fill out the rest of your schedule. These can be any class that you are interested in. Just make sure that the class has open seats and you have met all of the pre-requisites. Hopefully, this article has given you all of the necessary information to be on top of your scheduling for the next semester.

Horoscopes Aries (March 21-April19) A woman, perhaps a colleague who’s very bright and sometimes annoying, could visit you today. If you aren’t careful, this person could goad you into a heated discussion or arouse your insecurity. Try to distance yourself. Be polite and understanding and then show her the door! Taurus (April 20-May 20) A lot of calls could come your way today. Some involve people who live far away, some are from friends with heavy emotional difficulties, and one could come from a romantic partner with whom you’re very anxious to get together. You might hop in the car to meet this person somewhere familiar in your community. Don’t wear your voice out talking on the phone! Gemini (May 21-June 20) Money matters may need attention today. Bills need to be paid, checks deposited, or contracts executed. The relief you get from handling this should lift your spirits considerably. Get out in the fresh air, take a walk, and work off some of your energy. Get the endorphins going. Phone a friend and spend the evening on the town. You’ve worked hard and you deserve it. Cancer (June 21-July 22) You’re in a great mood, and you’re raring to go at just about anything. Your physical energy is high, so some exercise is indicated, possibly sports. Your enthusiasm and optimism are high, so the sky’s the limit. Leo (July 23-Aug 22) Today you might feel a strong psychic link with a friend who lives far away that you haven’t seen for a long time. You might wonder what this person is up to and this could be a bit worrying. Don’t be shy. Call! One way or another, you should know what’s happening. Lend a sympathetic ear! Virgo (August 23- September 22) Group activities or meetings could prove fraught today as those around you get pulled into discussions about which they feel strongly and on which they don’t all agree! This isn’t a good day to get involved in heated discussions even if you find the idea tempting. Stay out of it! Libra (September 23-October 22) The possibility of impending changes in your personal or professional life could have you feeling insecure. Don’t be. If anything, you’ll benefit from these changes. Try to relax! Let yourself be carried along by the current.

Scorpio (October 23- November 21) You may have been making plans to take a long trip or return to school for an advanced degree. Until now you may have put it off. You’ve finally stepped over the line and made the decision to do it. There’s no stopping you! Sagittarius (November 22-December 21) Legal papers that you may have been working on for a while should finally be done today. This should lift your spirits if for no other reason than to have it all out of the way! You should feel especially talkative, enthusiastic, and passionate. Have fun! Capricorn (December 22-January 19) Some bad experiences regarding career, family, travel, or education could have a colleague in an explosive mood today. This person could be unpredictable now - happy one minute and in the depths of gloom the next. Don’t try to give advice or cheer them up. Stay out of the way and let them work through it. Aquarius (January 20- Februay 18) Job stress might be getting to you. Drinking a lot of water would be a good idea. Moderate amounts of exercise and rest are also indicated. This is a good day to catch up on reading, studying, or research. Your physical self may not be what it should be, but your brain is sharp. Pisces (Februay 19- March 20) Today you should feel romantic and passionate and want to get together with your partner. You’ll probably do that, but it may be difficult and only arranged at the last minute. Don’t panic if you can’t reach them during the early part of the day. Don’t give up. You’ll have a great evening.

Haven trio honored in A-10 All-Conference Awards Doug Spatafore Dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Senior Director of Athletic Communications & Marketing

The Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) announced the 2021 All-Conference field hockey awards today and the Lock Haven University field hockey team was represented by a trio, including Martina Spangenberg (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Piaget), Jasmine Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and Zhao Rodrigo (Valencia, Spain/Colegio san Bartoleme), who were all honored. Spangenberg led the way as she earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team, while both Miller and Rodrigo earned well deserved spots on the 2021 All-Rookie Team. Spangenberg started all 14 games for Lock Haven and provided a huge spark from her midfield position. She finished with a team-high seven goals and a team-best 18 points. Spangenberg added four assists and two of her goals were game-winners. Her 18 points were the seventh-most in the A-10 during the regular season. Both Miller and Rodrigo made an immediate impact for LHU. Both players started all 14 games as rookies. Miller scored four goals, including two gamewinning markers. She added two assists for 10 total points. Rodrigo stood out on defense for LHU and was a key all season on penalty corner plays. She finished with one goal, three assists and a defensive save. During the shortened 2020-21 Atlantic 10 season – held last spring – Spangenberg earned Second

Team honors to go along with an All-Rookie Team selection. LHU finished the 2021 season at 5-9 overall. Three of those five wins came on the home-turf at Charlotte Smith Field. Lock Haven was 2-5 in A-10 action with those two wins coming over Saint Louis and Richmond. The conference-win over Richmond came at home and was the first of two straight shutout-victories from the Bald Eagles.
