Cheerleading has been an essential piece of college sports for almost a century. Cheerleading at LHU is no different. The LHU Cheerleading club has been active for almost as long. Mya Grubbs, a senior Health and Physical Education major, is the current Cheerleading club president. The club performs several stunts like the Handstand Pyramid and the Forearm stand as well as various cheers and dances at LHU football games, basketball games, and wrestling matches. Grubbs said, “We try to get the crowds in the games and try to build up school spirit. I mean we love Lock Haven.” Outside of the LHU sports games, the Cheerleading club participates in university hosted events, such as volunteering opportunities. They also participate at events in Lock Haven like the Central Mountain High School homecoming parade. Grubbs said, “We try to be as involved as we can in the Lock Haven community.” The club consists of over 15 members including a male cheerleader this semester. The club practices every Monday and Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Each stunt they learn, taking roughly 2 hours to perfect. Kylie McGinley, a junior Psychology major, said, “I think that if LHU students were to join this club, they would enjoy the family atmosphere that we have together. … We do a lot of team bonding and we love to spend time around each other.” The next cheerleading tryout will be held on November 1. Social media giants, Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp crashed in the morning of Oct. 4 after a reported server blackout. The media platforms went down around 11:30 a.m. that morning and stayed out of service for approximately six hours. While they were back up and running by 6:00 p.m., not all of the platforms’ services were functional until later that night and into the next morning. Facebook, who is the parent company of Instagram and Whatsapp, blamed a “faulty configuration change” as the main cause of the internet outage. In a statement released on Oct. 5, Facebook admitted that one of its employed engineers issued a command during a routine maintenance job. The command “unintentionally took down all the connections in our backbone network, effectively disconnecting Facebook data centers globally.” Facebook went on to say that further in the statement that “Our systems are designed to audit commands like these to prevent mistakes like this, but a bug in that audit tool prevented it from properly stopping the command.”
Despite the loss of connection, Facebook assured people that it was not a result of an internet hack since there was “no evidence that user data was compromised.” Media outages at this scale do not occur very frequently. The last reported lengthy social media outage occurred in 2019 which prompted users to not use the internet for approximately 14 hours. According to Downtracker, a service tool that tracks outages, more than 10.6 million problems were reported globally as a result of Facebook’s blackout. Even though these problems were the only ones recorded, an estimated 3.5 billion users lost access to their social media platforms. While the blockage disconnected people all over the world from their loved ones for several hours, Facebook also experienced some harsh consequences as a result of the internet crash. The outage cost Facebook roughly $6 billion according to Fortune. Stock prices for the social media platforms also fell drastically. Following Facebook’s crash, another social media giant, Snapchat, experienced a similar outage on Oct. 13 leaving tens of thousands of users unable to send and receive messages.

Oct. 22, 2021 What you might have missed in the new “Halloween Kills” trailer Kassidee Wozniak kbw191@lockhaven.edu Online Editor “Halloween Kills” is a sequel of the 2018 “Halloween” movie which ended with the “death” of villain, Michael Myers. With a new movie to the long Halloween series, that means that somehow Myers is alive and looking for revenge on those who attempted to kill him, mainly the Strode family. The previous movie ended with the family trapping Myers in Laurie Strode’s basement, leaving him to die by bur ning the house down and then escaping to safety. F iremen were aler ted of this mass f ire and ar rived at the house to see if there were any survivors, which is the f irst scene of the trailer. What the f iref ighters didn’t know is that they evidently saved the mass murderer and r uined Laurie Strode’s plan of ending any future killings sprees of Myers’. The Strodes f inally felt safe at the hospital af ter assuming their trap worked until revealed by an unknown person that he is still alive. Now again the women of the Strode’s family, and the citizens of Haddonf ield must deal with the “boogeyman” too. The trailer revealed that the family, along with other citizens, are planning to track down each victim of Myers in order to understand who exactly he is tar-
geting. Another thing revealed is that Myers gains more strength and power af ter each person he kills. People refer to him as the “essence of evil”. Laurie Strode is conf ident that this time she can put an end to her lifetime tor mentor, Michael Myers. “Halloween Kills,” directed by David Green, will be released on Halloween.

“Julie and the Phantoms” is a fantastic musical comedy from Netflix Kristen Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor The Netflix show “Julie and the Phantoms” is about a girl named Julie who meets a band of three guys who were turned into ghosts after an accident 25 years prior. She helps them become a band again after they lost the chance when they were killed by food poisoning. The guys in return help her find herself again after Julie lost her mother. The show is directed mostly by Kenny Ortega and created by Dan Cross and David Hoge. The cast includes Madison Reyes as Julie, Charlie Gillespie as Luke, Owen Joyner as Alex, Jeremy Shada as Reggie, Jadah Marie as Flynn, Sacha Carlson as Nick, Savannah Lee May as Carrie, Carlos Ponce as Julie’s dad, Sonny
Bustamante as Julie’s little brother and Cheyenne Jackson as Caleb Covington. This show was released September 10, 2020. I thought the series was amazing because it has a fantastic storyline of how music can help someone through a grieving process and it can also bring people together. I thought the cast did a fantastic job bringing the story to life and made the series fun and exciting. I loved the music and dancing in the series. The show will definitely tear at your heartstrings in some episodes because of Julie talking about her mother passing away and the backstory of the guys and the night that they died.

Whether it is at the club, at a party, or in your dorm room, it’s so much fun to slide around the floor, throw your hands up, and hop around like a lunatic. But there is something missing, and that thing is a playlist! Here some amazing bass lines, addictive beats, and smooth synths that will push your body to groove around uncontrollably and show the dancefloor who is boss! “Step Into My Life” by Jessie Ware – “What’s Your Pleasure” as a whole album is perfect to dance to, as there is a wide spread of styles to it. This track however is the best, mainly because of the horns on it. “Face to Face” by Daft Punk – You can’t ever go wrong with Daft Punk. They really popularized the House genre in the 90s by providing catchy yet deeply immersive tracks. “Face to Face” is one of my favorites by them. “D.A.N.C.E.” by Justice – If you don’t really dance, maybe you need some motivation from a track that tells you to dance! It doesn’t matter if you look weird or funny, just “do the dance!” “Supernature” by Cerrone – When you talk about dance music, it’s hard not to bring up disco. I think Cerrone doesn’t get talked about enough in the genre. His best and catchiest song is “Supernature.” It’s long, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” by Sylvester – A large amount of modern dance music is rooted in queer culture. Sylvester, an openly gay singer of the 70s, innovated dance music culture by being the first openly gay man to earn a dance hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Dancing On My Own” by Robyn – We all get a little lonely and sad occasionally. Why not listen to some Robyn to get out of that funk and into a happier groove? “Blind” by Hercules & Love Affair – At the core of a good dance song is a stellar rhythm section. “Blind” is killer on all fronts, but it has one of the best bass lines and drumming on any modern disco song. “I Can Change” by LCD Soundsystem – While somewhat minimal as far as instrumentation, the emotion of this song is huge and is sure to hit you in the heart some way.

It’s that time of year again when the leaves start falling, the air cools, and spooky decorations start to appear on your neighbor’s porch. Included in these decorations are the classic pumpkins. A staple in Halloween decorating, carving pumpkins can be a nightmare if you do it wrong. Here are some tips and tricks to make sure your pumpkin looks better than all of the others.
Be Patient while Carving You may want to rush to get your pumpkin carved to be shown to the world, but you should really take your time, especially if the design is more intricate. Gene Granada, another veteran pumpkin carver recommends to leave the pumpkin as intact as possible when carving. Instead of pulling on the pieces you carved, make sure each corner or edge is fully cut.
Pick the Right Pumpkin When picking a pumpkin, you should look for a smooth surface. According to professional pumpkin carver David LaRochelle, ridged pumpkins are a pain to carve. The shape of the pumpkin shouldn’t matter if you already have a design in mind. You should also avoid pumpkins with soft spots, as this is a sign that the pumpkin is starting to spoil.
Pumpkin carving can be hard, especially if you’re new to it, or just aren’t much of an artist. By following these tips, your jack-o-lantern should turn out great, and just in time for Halloween!
Open the Pumpkin from the Bottom This may completely go against what is generally accepted, but according to tasteofhome.com, it’s actually more efficient. By opening the pumpkin from the bottom, all of the seeds will come out much easier than by entering from the top. Trace Your Design Before Carving Maybe this is obvious, but you shouldn’t start carving completely blind. Make sure you know what you want your pumpkin to look like before starting. LaRochelle even recommends designing your pumpkin on tracing paper before starting. Then, you can transfer your design directly onto the pumpkin.

Since trick-or-treating isn’t the best option in the middle of a pandemic, here are a few fun replacement ideas as a safe way to get into the spooky spirit. Haunted Homes. Put on your own haunted house spectacular for your family. Get a few things to trick your kids into thinking they are feeling human body parts. Tell them to close their eyes and feel a few of the following: Ground beef feels like brains. Peeled grapes feel like eyes, although unpeeled will do in a pinch. Unpopped kernels for teeth. Just buy the candy yourself! Cut out the long walks and the tireless complaints from kids about how heavy their candy stack is. Plus this way you can’t get any candy you don’t like. Halloween movie marathon. Break out the popcorn and the cider! Settle in for anything to light hearted flicks to the goriest of films or even creepiest of psychological thrillers. Pumpkin carving/decorating contests. Get a few extra pumpkins and hold your own family competition. Whoever wins can get the first pick of candy or choose what plays on TV that night. Themed baking. Get everyone together to do a couple of haunted DIY treats. Not only will this be quality time spent together it also ends with delicious treats.

You can all fight Tess in the parking lot if you don’t like it. Unique alternative to classic hot chocolate. 5. Hot Tea- Is a great warm-up drink after a day in the cool, fall air. Add some honey or sugar for best results. 6. Water- It is timeless. A year from now, 10 years from now or even 100 years from now, you will still need water. It’s the one true iconic drink. 7. Couple Costumes Kit Taveras mxt9438@lockhaven.edu Lifestyles Editor For people trying to think up interesting ideas for Halloween costumes it can be difficult to develop one as an individual, much less in a set of two. This is doubly so for couples who seek to wear matching costumes and stand out in a crowd, or develop new couple costume ideas that have never been done before. However, are couple costumes even necessary? Do they add the significant flair and attention many couples seem to think they do? Depending on the costumes in question, it depends. Some couple costume ideas can be really cute, including the classics. I still see Morticia and Gomez Addams outfits to this day, and they can be nice without having much attention drawn to them. One thing I appreciate most in Halloween costumes is not originality, but the idea behind them. Lots of well-known couples in media would be great for matching costumes. As with the good, though, are the bad costume ideas. Especially if you plan to be in a place with lots of people or children, couple costumes that include skimpy or inappropriate garments can be largely inappropriate and even disturbing. Depending on the environment you plan to be in on Halloween night, it’s important for couples to remember when to tone things down a little. It’s best not to get into the bad costume ideas. Regardless, it’s important to remember that being the most noticeable person in the room at any given time is not necessarily a good thing. Having not-so-family-friendly or even over-elaborate costumes can have people talking about you in a less than favorable way, which I think is best avoided for the benefit of everyone involved. Overall, I am not adverse to the idea of couples dressing up on Halloween night. When done with muted intent it can be cute and worth praising. They are not tacky in practice, but in the execution a couple chooses to exert depending on the circumstances of the setting they’re in. It’s always good to be self-aware.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Trailing 1-0 late in an important Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match, the Lock Haven University men’s soccer team surged to score three goals – all in the final 10 minutes – and the Bald Eagles secured the thrilling, 3-1, comeback-win. The victory pushed LHU atop of the table in the PSAC East. Lock Haven (8-2-2, 6-1-1 PSAC East) secured the seasonsweep of perennial power West Chester (6-2-2, 6-2-1 PSAC East) as LHU notched its second victory over the Golden Rams in 11 days. The Golden Rams dominated the possession in the first half, but were unable to make the breakthrough and the teams remained scoreless at halftime. Shortly after the break, West Chester capitalized on a cross into the box and Ryan Keenan volleyed the ball into the back of the net. Seemingly out of nowhere in the final 10 minutes of the match, the Bald Eagles were given a lifeline from senior captain Beckham Sibiski (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown H.S.) who pounced on a rebound from 23 yards out and fired a low-driven shot into the bottom left corner to tie the game at 1-1. Just minutes later, Sibiski took a pass from Samuel Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./McCaskey) and launched a beautiful 26-yard effort that flew into the top corner and left the West Chester goalkeeper helpless. Hershey joined the party in the 86th minute for LHU, calmly finishing off a cross from Colton Swanson (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) and giving The Haven a 3-1 advantage. Aitor Ruiz de Eguilaz (Euskadi, Spain/Koldo Mitxelena (Robert Morris)) made three saves in net for the Bald Eagles including a massive stop just before the LHU flurry of goals, and kept the team within touching distance.
Chase Tackett (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and David Dries (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) commanded the backline in a strong defensive performance that allowed just four shots on goal. Duc Do (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) also put in a notable performance providing valuable cover in the midfield unit. Tonight’s winning-effort kicked off LHU’s 2021 Homecoming week festivities. It served as the first of five home athletics events this week. Up Next: LHU’s next outing comes on Saturday (Oct. 23) when they travel to Bloomsburg. That matchup is set for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.

On Saturday, Oct. 23 at 12:30 p.m., an event will be held to celebrate the newly-installed turf at Charlotte Smith Field. The Lock Haven University f ield hockey team is set host Davidson College in an important late-season Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) match on Sunday, October 24 at 12 p.m. The home match on Charlotte Smith Field will close a busy week of LHU athletics during Homecoming Week 2021 at The Haven. Lock Haven (5-7 overall, 2-3 Atlantic 10) is coming off a pair of back-to-back victories at home. LHU opened last weekend with a cr ucial conference win over Richmond. The Bald Eagles blanked Richmond 3-0 for LHU’s f irst shutout of the 2021 season. On Sunday (Oct. 17), LHU made it two in a row as the Bald Eagles shutout Sacred Heart 2-0 in non-conference action. The two wins at home leveled Lock Haven’s record to 3-3 on the home turf this season. The two home games last week also marked the f irst two contests of a regular-season ending fourgame homestand. Davidson is 2-12 overall and 0-4 in A-10 play. The Wildcats will play at nationally-ranked Saint Joseph’s (A-10) on Friday (Oct. 22), before traveling to Lock Haven Sunday. LHU has won six straight contests vs. Davidson dating back to 2014.
