NASA crashes spacecraft into asteriod

Levi Deitz Copy Editor lwd6487@lockhaven.edu

NASA announced a mission to test its defenses against asteroids will take place on Nov. 23. The mission is scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The mission, entitled the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), involves the spacecraft being connected to a Falcon 9 rocket supplied by SpaceX, and then launched toward an asteroid system near Earth. The plan is for the spacecraft to travel for a year to the asteroid system, and then attach itself to a 525-foot diameter asteroid named Dimorphos. The DART spacecraft will use a camera, nicknamed DRACO, and autonomous navigation software to make contact at a speed of 15,000 mph, according to masslive.com. In a statement to NBC, NASA said, “The collision will change the speed of the moonlet in its orbit around the main body by a fraction of one percent, but this will change the orbital period of the moonlet by several minutes — enough to be observed and measured using telescopes on Earth.” The DART mission will be the first to show off something NASA calls the “kinetic impactor technique.” The aim of this test is to change the course and motion of the asteroid. According to masslive.com, “The data collected will help NASA’s planetary Defense Co-

ordination Office in furthering this technology to protect Earth.” Although it is rare for large objects to enter Earth’s atmosphere, NASA says that over 900 asteroids within 1000 kilometers of Earth have been discovered since 1980. In an interview with WTTW, Chicago’s PBS station, astronomer and planetary scientist Mark Hammergren stated that the goal of this type of mission is to measure the asteroid’s response to the impact of the spacecraft. When asked if these missions could theoretically change the course of an asteroid headed for Earth, Hammergren answered, “Small changes do add up over time. If we just change the speed of the asteroid by even something as low as maybe even a few millimeters a second, then that adds up over time. That’s a change in velocity. So you just multiply that by the time period – by the lead time you might have before an upcoming impact – all you have to do is get the asteroid to miss the earth by a few 1000 miles. If you have enough time, you can do that with the tiniest push.” Even though NASA is conducting this defense mission, earth is not currently under the threat of any asteroids, so there’s no need to worry about it just yet.

“Squid Game” Review: Netflix’s best new show Alex Ross amr1884@lockhaven.edu A&E Editor If you have been on social media lately (especially T ikTok and T witter), you may have noticed people talking about something called “Squid Game.” I personally found out about it through T ikTok. I saw all of the jokes and memes about it, and it got me curious. Af ter binging it in three days, I completely understood the appeal of the show. The plot is laid out like this; citizens of South Korea are invited to take par t in a game show of children’s games to win a large sum of money. Seems simple and fun, right? Well, these par ticipants soon realize this is also a f ight for their lives, as if they lose, they are killed. Through this plot, we meet a diverse g roup of characters going through money str ugg les. The f irst two episodes set up each character and explain the situations that got them there. Some of these characters are more interesting than others. The f irst character we meet is an addicted gambler in debt who wishes to prove himself to his family, especially his daughter. This is a ver y basic and tropey set up that I see way too of ten in media and it bothers me immensely.

With that all being said, there are far worse shows on Netf lix you could be watching. Using a deadly game show to criticize capitalistic g reed seems obvious at f irst, but the show really pulls you in with some interesting characters and tense moments. However, there are moments in the show where my intrigue consistently dips in and out due to other characters that are uninteresting and side-plots that don’t do much for me. Overall, though, I would recommend watching “Squid Game” if you like morbid and pessimistic shows with an underlying criticism of moder n society. I sincerely hope there won’t be a second season of this show. I f ind that letting it be its own thing will help it out in the long r un. Dragging it out for three or four more seasons will wear down its appeal and uniqueness. The one thing the show has going for it is the morbid char m it presents, and I would hate to see it become the next “Saw”, where the series will be r un into the g round until no one enjoys it.

Halloween Dance Playlist Kassidee Wozniak kbw191@lockhaven.edu Online Editor

This playlist will feature all the spooky songs that will have you release your inner dance demon. Not only will you be busting a move with your friends but extra swag points for being in your Halloween costume! Ghostbusters by R ay Parker Jr - You all should know who to call if there is something strange in your neighborhood by now. This song is a classic and comes from the 80s’ movie ‘Ghostbusters’. I don’t know about you but that g reen ghost, Slimer, gave me so many nightmares as a kid. Thriller by Michael Jack son - If you don’t do the zombie dance during this song just don’t even bother going to the Halloween dance. Ever y sing le dance I’ve been to, not even Halloween ones, have played this song at least once. T ime Warp by The R ocky Hor ror Show - At least one song from the ‘R ocky Hor ror Picture Show’ soundtrack had to be included in this playlist. F un Fact: The ‘T ime Warp’ dance is a parody of ‘The T wist’ dance. Spooky, Scar y Skeletons by Andrew Gold - During the month of October, this song to me is an ear wor m and will only end once it becomes November. If you didn’t know, this song is a seasonal meme, and it becomes popular again around Halloween.

The Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson - Ever y day is Halloween for Marilyn Manson. The song’s meaning is representation for all the alter native people who view life in a dif ferent way than what is known as normal. It touches on the theme of will power in the capitalist society which Manson believes makes people ug ly. I Want Candy by Bow Wow Wow - This song was released in 1965 by ‘The Strangeloves’ but became popular in 1982 from the band ‘Bow Wow Wow’. The word “candy” is referring to American singer and dancer, Candy Johnson. She is known for dancing and singing in several f ilms during the 60s’.

Inexpensive Halloween costume ideas Tess English Managing Editor tae7002@lockhaven.edu

The spooky season is upon us once again. Unfortunately, college life doesn’t always grant students the dream budget to put on an expensive outfit that we might only end up wearing for one or a few nights. If you want a cost effective way to get decked out for halloween look no further. Here are a few creative ideas that will help you stick to your budget. Loki variant - This year “Loki” opened up the multiverse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This gift has allowed us to get a sneak peak on how “variants” can look wildly different from their “original” or main timeline. This flexibility lets anyone who forks out a little rough for “variant” tshirt can claim to be a variant of their favorite MCU character. Sleeping Beauty - Before you judge, it’s probably not exactly what you’re thinking. This kind of idea is good if you’re a funny person. Get decked out in your best PJ’s and throw on one of those cheap birthday plastic tiaras. You’re already a beauty so no make-up is necessary unless you’re really feeling it. Ghostface From “Scream” - All you need is some black clothes and a Ghostface mask. Also, using any mask will cover you up. Coraline - Yellow jacket and yellow shoes and you’ve nailed the look. Bonus points if you use blue hairspray or black color contacts.

Nerd - Use this opportunity to expose your inner nerd. This can be anything from your secret Dungeons and Dragons (DND) merch to your basic Star Wars wear.

Are you fantasizing about walking out the door and not returning? You probably need a break from everyone. Why not get a massage and float away for a while? Drive-ins still popular Kristin Turner Kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor Drive-ins were a big thing in the 50s and there are still some today. There were a few artists that did a drive-in concert during COVID like Garth Brooks and Blake Shelton. I think drive-ins should make a comeback especially during COVID because it would help with the social distancing and people could experience one of the things that people in the 50s used to do for fun besides going to diners. We do have a drive-in in Clearfield called the Super 322 that plays movies and did drive-in concerts last year during COVID. I got the chance to go see Garth Brooks with my family at the drive-in last summer and it was an awesome experience. They did that instead of having the fair and the parade that summer. They also had Blake Shelton at the drive-in last summer as well. With COVID still going on and artists cancelling some of their shows, this could be an alternative that they could do for their concerts. They would bring in the same

amount of money and people could just listen to their favorite artists from their car and watch them on a big screen instead of going to a live concert surrounded by people.

Women’s Soccer edged out on late Millersville goal Doug Spatafore Dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Senior Director of Athletic Communications & Marketing

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (4-6-1, 2-6-1 PSAC East) and visiting Millersville University (4-43, 4-4-2 PSAC East) locked up in a tightly contested Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match tonight at Hubert Jack Stadium, and in the end, the visiting Marauders found a late-goal to edge LHU, 3-2. Abby Burdyn (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) and Evelyn Ciaccia (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) scored for the Bald Eagles. The game was tied 2-2 late and it looked as if LHU would play in its second straight overtimegame, but Millersville found the game-winner in the 87th minute. The Bald Eagles jumped on Millersville early and led 1-0 less than two minutes into the match after Burdyn sent a 20-yard blast into the side-netting at the far post. The early strike came just 1:58 into the contest after she collected a loose ball just outside the penalty area. The visitors leveled the score at 1-1 in the 32nd minute and shortly after Lock Haven goalkeeper Kylie Auman (Centre Hall, Pa./ Penns Valley) made a big save to keep the match tied. At halftime, Millersville held an 8-5 advantage in shots, but the score remained knotted at 1-1 after 45 minutes. Just like the first half, Lock Haven struck early in the second. In the 50th minute Evelyn Ciaccia (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) knocked one home after Eva Stoessel’s (Grantville, Pa./ Lower Dauphin) initial shot was turned away by Millersville goalie Reagan Kolinksi. With just over 22 minutes to play, Ciaccia created another scoring opportunity. She split through three Millersville defenders and with

one player to beat, she fired a left-footed shot that required a diving save. Lock Haven couldn’t shake the visitors and the Marauders tied the match at 2-2 in the 80th minute of play. In the 87th Millersville knocked home the game-winner. Auman finished with five saves. For the game, Lock Haven held a 14-12 advantage in shots. UP NEXT // SENIOR NIGHT - LHU will host Shippensburg University at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 16 in PSAC East action. The match will serve as the Bald Eagles 2021 Senior Night.
