America on the brink of running out of money
Kit Taveras Lifestyles Editor mxt9438@lockhaven.edu
Recent news finds the U.S.government in a tricky situation as a warning from the U.S. Treasury secretary, Janet Yellen, says the federal government will run out of money sometime in October. This warning comes just hours after a blockage by Republican Senators to increase the debt ceiling. If Congress fails to reach a consensus and raise the debt ceiling, it will likely cause the government to default on its debt for the first time in U.S. history. The course of action needed to prevent a government shutdown has been met with starkly different viewpoints from Republican and Democratic figures. Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader, tweeted out on Sept. 28, “Democrats won’t get bipartisan help paving a path to partisan recklessness. If they want to use fast-track, party-line procedures to ram through trillions more in socialism and inflation, they can use the same tools to handle the debt limit.” McConnell goes on to state that Democrats should pass an extension to the debt ceiling on their own. President Joe Biden, however, claims that Republicans are intentionally negating the debts they themselves incurred during the previous presidency. “Republicans won’t vote to raise the debt limit to cover their own policies under the previous administration. It is reckless and dangerous,” he says in a tweet on Tuesday, using the $8 trillion added to the debt under the Trump Administration as evidence.

Volcano erruption in Hawaii in the first time in five months Levi Deitz Copy Editor lwd6487@lockhaven.edu
Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano began erupting on Sept. 29 after being inactive for five months. The last eruption lasted from December 2020 to May 2021. Kilauea is Hawaii’s most active volcano, and according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), it is the most active volcano in the world. It is located on the Big Island of Hawai’i along with four other volcanoes, of which only one, Mauna Loa, is active. Mauna Loa hasn’t erupted since 1984. Both volcanoes are a part of the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. The USGS told CNN that the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory raised its alert level to “warning” after recording an increase in seismic activity. David Philips, the deputy scientist-in-charge of the observatory, told CNN “Just after midnight, we started to get some increase in earthquake activity and seismic swarms.” Officials have noted that the eruption does not currently pose a threat to residents or buildings, but that the eruption could last for months. According to the USGS, “As of this morning, October 5, 2021, all lava activity is confined within Halema’uma’u in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.” Lava continues to erupt from
vents along the western wall of Halema’uma’u Crater. The USGS also say that “Seismic activity remains relatively stable.” The primary concern right now is clouds of volcanic gas, which are made up of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and water vapor. Volcanic gas has the potential to harm people’s respiratory systems. The gas can also harm agriculture, wildlife and livestock. Kilauea’s is most known for its destructive eruption in 2018. This event destroyed over 700 homes and caused over 2,000 people to be evacuated, according to the National Park Service. The eruption also polluted the air with volcanic fog, which can cause acid rain. Rifts were created by the earthquakes, which helped lava to flow into the surrounding waters of the island. This mixing of magma and water can hurt the marine environment by killing of microorganisms and other ocean life. As of Oct. 5, the alert level has been lowered to a “watch” by the USGS after evaluation of the eruption. Ron Hanatani, a resident of Volcano Village near the entrance to the park, told U.S. News that tourists and other residents have been coming to the area trying to catch a glimpse of the eruption.

Oct. 8, 2021 “Must-Watch” Romance Anime Kassidee Wozniak kbw191@lockhaven.edu Online Editor
Out of every category in anime, romance is lacking the love in the community. To some its cliché but it lets viewers get connected to their emotional side every few minutes of the episode. So, if you love having your heart pulled out of your chest then you will enjoy my list of romance anime. “Sailor Moon” (1992) - This anime screams girl-power and female encouragement. One of the more popular anime too. The anime is about a group of teenage girls who come together to transform into sailor guardians in order to battle all forces of evil that threaten peace. Love is found between Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask who are destined to be together but in another universe. Throughout the seasons their love becomes stronger and evident. “Say I Love You” (2012) - My favorite romance anime of all time. It’s about how a lonely girl (Mei) meets a popular/ well-liked boy (Yamato) who teaches her to embrace life instead of living in fear. You see Mei transform into a confident person because of her relationship with Yamato. If you are a sentimental person, you will love this anime! “Kiss Him, Not Me!” (2016) - The name of this anime alone summarizes this anime. This anime is about what happens after an overweight girl becomes skinny from her
depression over her favorite anime character dying. The answer is all the hot boys in her high school try to get with her, but she wants them to make out with each other rather than with her. This anime is considered harem and a romantic comedy. “Kamisama Kiss” (2012) - I can’t put a number on the number of times I binge watched this anime… it deserves more than two seasons. This anime centers around Nanami, a kind teenage girl, who recently became homeless, and she saved a man from dogs. That man gives her his home which is a shrine and where she becomes the new Earth Deity of the shrine. She meets Tomoe who is a yōkai and becomes her protector. Their love is forbidden but they both find themselves falling in love with each other. “Kimi ni Todoke” (2009) - The female protagonist, Sawako, resembles the girl from the horror movie the Ring. She is nicknamed “Sadako”. That is the reason why she is considered an outcast at her school and why she has no friends. Even though she is one of the sweetest girls ever, they’re missing out. Until, one friendly popular guy, Shouta, becomes intrigued by her mysterious presence and becomes friends with her. Of course their friendship transforms into lovers because they can’t hide their true feelings.
A&E Did you know that? “Your Name” was the highest grossing anime film until 2020’s “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train.” https://gamerant.com/anime-movies-highest-grossingbox-office-stream/

“Beginners Guide to Halloween” Playlist Kassidee Wozniak kbw191@lockhaven.edu Online Editor With Halloween being only three weeks away, it’s time to prepare your ears to get in the spooky spirit. October is the only dedicated month of celebrating horror and all scary related things. This playlist will feature songs from classic Halloween movies and other eerie sounding songs.
“The Addams Family” by TV Themes: You better practice snapping your fingers for this song because this song requires it. The best way to describe the Addams family is that they’re “creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky”.
“Fairly Local” by Twenty-One Pilots: The background music of this sound reminds me of the cliché of running in the woods alone trying to escape the villain. The lyrics ‘fairly local’ is the band’s way of expressing they’ve been through hardships in their life.
“Creep” cover by Carol’s Daughter: Compared to the original, the background music of the cover is more intimidating, and reminds me of a creepy doll lurking on its prey. The lyrics ‘I’m a weirdo, what the hell am I doing here, I don’t belong here’ reminds me of the outcast character in cliché teen horror films.
“Angel Eyes” (feat. Chris Motionless) by New Years Day: This whole song is about encountering the devil and trying to get away from his spell. Another indication of the devil near by are these lyrics ‘watch out the devil is in sight’.
“Remains of the Day” by Danny Elfman: Any song from the soundtrack of Tim Burton’s movie, “Corpse Bride”, deserves to be on this playlist. This song tells the tragic story of the beloved character, Emily, aka the corpse bride.
“Thriller” by Michael Jackson: This wouldn’t be considered a Halloween playlist with this song. If this doesn’t put you in the spooky spirit, well I don’t know what song will. “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker Jr: Every Halloween dance had played this song once during the night. If you are unaware this song comes from the 80s movie classic ‘The Ghostbusters’ which is about ghost hunting. “This is Halloween” by The Citizens of Halloween: By now throughout your life, you should have memorized this song from watching the movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. This song is about welcoming the pumpkin king, Jack Skellington.

Fall-friendly exercise options Ian T. MacGregor Staff Writer itm9315@lockhaven.edu
Whatever appeals to you, ‘tis the season to Fall is finally here, and the cooler air and get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and get some falling leaves are a gentle reminder that winexercise before we’re all stuck indoors for anter cold is just around the bend. For those other long winter. of us who love to exercise and despise being cooped-up inside all winter, we need to get outside now and enjoy it while we can. Here are a few outdoor exercise ideas that are perfect for the crisp autumn air. Running: Whether you like running or not, I recommend you get out and try some nature trail running this fall season. Central PA is an ideal spot to access nature and hiking trails. Most nature trails will provide a low-impact running surface that no treadmill or paved sidewalk can come close to. Walking: Going for an exercise walk this season is the perfect way to get the body moving and incorporate some low-key exercise into your day. You can do this solo or with family, friends, pets, or pushing a stroller. Biking: Grab a bike and head outside. If you don’t have a bike, consider borrowing one or shopping around for a new or used bicycle. This can be a fun way to cover large distances, take in new sights, and get an incredible workout in. Don’t know much about biking? Consult your local bicycle store (every town has one). From my experience, the people who work at these stores know everything there is to know on biking gear, routes, and best-practices. Outdoor Sports/Group Classes: If you’re more into organized group activities, check the web for fitness classes in the park or recreational sports leagues. Check out Airbnb Experiences, Groupon, and Yelp for all sorts of different outdoor fitness classes and group activities in your local area.

Best things about fall Krissy Turner Opinions Editor kat5346@lockhaven.edu
Summer is over and Fall is upon us! Here are some of the best things about fall: Halloween! Some people do not like Halloween and that is ok. Halloween is one of the best things about fall because you can dress up and get free candy no matter how old you are. There is also watching scary movies, decorating for Halloween and going to haunted houses. Not to mention the hayrides, going to a pumpkin patch and walking through a corn maze. Leaves changing. It is a beautiful scene when the leaves start changing colors. Weather changing. We are moving from hot weather into cooler weather. Time to bust out the sweatshirts, jeans, jean jackets and sneakers! Coffee/tea! Whether you drink coffee, tea or both does not matter. One coffee that is very popular around fall is the pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks. As far as tea flavors go, there is an cinnamon apple spice tea that is caffeine free because it is an herbal tea. It is great for the fall season. Football games. Football season has started for all of you sports fans out there! The holiday season. Whether a enjoyer of Thanksgiving or
Christmas, October usually spells the beginning of holiday preparation and a infectious amount of festive spirit. The segway into winter and the new year is definitely the most hectic... and the most exiciting. Apple picking. One of the best autumn activities available. Not only does apple picking bring you closer to nature, but allows you to bask in all the crisp air the environment has to offer. Especially for those originating from a suburban or city environment, spending time in an orchard can be a very humbling experience. Scented candles. Autumn and pumpkin spice candles smell the best, and bring life to any home.
Warm clothes and comfy scarves. Bundling up always feels great, especially in the special sweater knitted by grandma. Baking with family/friends. Apple pies taste especially sweet at this time of the year, and working together with loved ones to create a delicious product is all the better! Staying inside all day and sitting by the fire. When it gets cold, especially here in central PA, it can be brutal. Fortunately, curling up under a blanket by the fire can be the perfect remedy for this. Hot chocolate! Coming home from work or school and fighting off the chill with a cup of hot chocolate is the perfect end to any day.

How to beat the winter gain Thomas Kaikai Sports Editor tjk2774@lockhaven.edu
Remember if you are getting tired that means With the winter shortly approaching, we all know you are getting better and pushing yourself, but you that the cold season is coming very fast. It is going must know your limits and not overexert yourself. to be that time of the year where if you see someone wearing shorts outside you are going to look at them twice and wonder if they are going crazy. Or perhaps they are simply going to workout, and do not mind being in the cold for a couple minutes. Working out this winter could be the key to getting your body in the shape like you’ve always wanted. There is no secret about losing weight. The biggest thing you need to know is how the calorie system works. If you eat more calories than you burn you will gain weight, and if you burn more calories than you eat, you will lose weight. Follow this system right here and you will realize why you’ve been losing or gaining weight. To lose some weight, you should change your diet. Start by eliminating or at least limiting sweets, fried foods, and fast food. Steer more towards home cooked meals, salads, and fruits. Establish a weight goal that you want to meet and write it down. Do not be frightened if you have not exercised in a while or at all. You are doing this for yourself, not others. You can simply start out by doing push-ups and sit-ups in your room for a couple days. With a base goal of doing 100 of each a day for 3 days, you will already start feeling changes in your body. You want to build consistency with this, so try not to forget to do your sets by the end of the week. Gradually, you will get used to physical activity. Now it is time to hit the Rec Center. Hop on a cardio machine for about 10 to 30 minutes a day and take it at your own pace.

No Live Events Alex Ross amr1884@lockhaven.edu A&E editor Covid-19 hit everyone hard mentally, physically, and psychologically. If you haven’t caught it, you know somebody who has, and they more than likely experienced the brunt of the symptoms. Sadly, too many people have died from something so preventable. Things are getting better, though. Vaccines have been rolled out, booster shots are on their way, and people are starting to wear masks. However, this does not mean the pandemic is over. As a matter of fact, this could only be the start of something bigger, and we need to prepare for it. Despite this, people think it’s pretty much over and are eager to return to their pre-pandemic lives. People want to go back to travelling, eating in restaurants, and worst of all, attending live events. This should not be happening by any means. I understand why people want concerts and festivals back. They are entertaining as all hell and getting to see your favorite band or singer could be a once in a lifetime moment. Plus, the fact that so many people work in the concert business like bands, stagehands, concert hall owners, and the like can get back to work. It is a big part of the music industry and the economy in general. But what would you say is more important; public health or entertainment? Super-spreader events, like concerts, can and will have a ripple effect on not only everyone who attends the concert, but the people they contact after it. Family, friends, classmates, and even random strangers can catch it and give it to someone they know. Is the risk of severely hurting or killing someone worth seeing some event for a few hours? I don’t think so. Reuters reports there have been 5 million deaths from Covid-19 around the world. That is 5 million too many. If we all could have stayed inside, gotten vaccinated, and listened to what experts said, this would have been over now. However, there are mindless and ignorant people in the world who care for themselves over others. These live events are giving people the wrong idea that the world is going back to normal. This is far from the truth, and will only get worse if they continue.

Men’s Soccer extends unbeaten streak, downs Shepherd Adam Kaylor Ank4635@lockhaven.edu Athletic Communications Assistant
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (5-1-2, 3-0-1 PSAC East) pushed its unbeaten streak to six games as it rolled past Shepherd University (1-9, 0-5 PSAC East), 2-0, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action. LHU, the fourth ranked team in the Atlantic Region, put in a strong 90-minute effort and picked up a decisive road-win, thanks to goals from Zane Puhala (Brockway, Pa./Brockway) and Andrea DiSomma (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.). Puhala got The Haven started in the 26th minute off an assist from freshman forward Samuel Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./McCaskey). The strike marked Puhala’s third goal on the season and the third assist for Hershey. DiSomma joined the party just 10 minutes later when he finished off his fifth goal on the year, which places him in a tie for fifth-place in the PSAC. Beckham Sibiski (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown H.S.) picked up his sixth assist on DiSomma’s goal and he currently sits in second place in the PSAC. The Bald Eagle defense completely stifled the Shepherd attack completing its second clean sheet of the year. The starting back four of Chase Tackett (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), Duc Do (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford), David Dries (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) and Connor Burke (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) protected goalkeeper Aitor Ruiz de Eguilaz (Euskadi, Spain/Koldo Mitxelena (Robert Morris)), who made six saves, and allowed only seven shots in a shutout effort. With the win, LHU extended its unbeaten run to six
games (5 wins & 1 draw), which is the longest such run since 2008 when Lock Haven went nine games unbeaten. Up Next: The Haven travels to West Chester on Saturday, October 9 for a showdown between the top-two teams in the PSAC East standings. Saturday’s match is set for a noon kickoff.
