Police Reports 09/19/20 Susquehanna Ave. Traffic Stop for tailights not operable. Verbal Warning issued.

09/19/20 Spring St. Traffic Stop for driving without headlights.

Verbal Warning issued.

09/20/20 Off Campus Officer assisted another department with a reported assault. One individual was transported to Correctional Facility and the other was transported to hospital.

09/20/20 Off Campus Officer assisted another department with a traffic stop.

09/24/20 On Campus Officer responded to a 911 hang up call. After speaking with individuals it was found that it was an accidental misdial. Case closed.

09/25/20 Fairview Suites Officer responded to two fire alarms in building.

Further investigation resulted in negative findings. Electrician was contacted for possible electrical issues.

09/25/20 Fairview Suites Officer responded to fire alarm in building.

Officer found no indication of smoke or fire.

Electrician is investigating.

Officers searched area and nothing unexpected was found.

APSCUF Retrenchment Meeting

On September 30, the Association of Pennsylvania State College & University Faculties(APSCUF) held a meeting for young journalists from seven out of the 14 schools that were selected for retrenchment.

These schools include: Edinboro, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Mansfield, Clarion, California University of Pennsylvania, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, and Lock Haven. This meeting was designed to give out any helpful information on what is to come to each and every one of these schools when the retrenchment happens and give feedback to our campuses and communities.

So here’s what we know: 1. Originally, ten out of fourteen schools were selected, but three schools (Bloomsburg, Kutztown, and Millersville) decided to rescind their letters.

2. Professors with tenure who have been selected for the retrenchment process will be notified by October 30.

3. Everyone else has a different notification date which should be announced soon but all professors who are selected will be terminated by the end of the current academic year.

4. At this time, no specific departments have been selected yet but the smaller they are, the more likely it is that they will be eliminated.

5. With the elimination of those departments will come the deletion of majors/minors that will force students to change their interest of study.

6. Class sizes will also increase.

7. Integration with other schools will help keep some classes alive, but students’ risk being shipped to another campus just to take a class that they probably will need to graduate.

Retrenchment is going to affect everyone. Just ask one of our students, Kyle Schlecht, who wrote two letters to the editor of “The Express”. One talks about his perspective on the upcoming faculty cuts and the other expresses what they mean for the students.

Prior to the APSCUF meeting, LHU held a Solidarity event to protest these proposed retentions. The event held at the campus ampitheater included student and fauclty speakers.

First Presidential Debate: A chaotic fight to the White House Kerri Hoover Ad/Design Manager kah4338@lockhaven.edu

President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden faced-off in the first debate of the 2020 presidential election on Sept. 29 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Chris Wallace, anchor of Fox News Sunday, moderated the debate.

The six topics for the debate, chosen

by Wallace, consisted of the Trump and Biden records, the U.S. Supreme Court, COVID-19, the economy, race and violence in American cities, and the integrity of the 2020 election.

During its full 90 minutes of air time, both presidential nominees interrupted and talked over one another, including Wallace, multiple times. According to the Washington Post, candidates made approximately 90 interruptions within 90 minutes. However, Trump dominated the evening with at least 71 interruptions.

Another significant portion of the evening was the domination of personal attacks made between the presidential candidates. According to NBC News, each candidate spent the majority of his speaking time - between 15 and 20 minutes each - attacking the other instead of discussing policies and plans for the future.

Some of Biden’s personal attacks on Trump included calling him a “liar,” a “clown”, and “the worst president America has ever had.” Conversely, Trump

attacked Biden for not accomplishing much in 47 years of governmental service, being controlled by the radical left, and aiding his son, Hunter Biden, to receive inappropriate benefits because of his connection to Ukraine.

Each of the topics discussed lasted under 10 minutes for each nominee.

Many of which were only discussed in under five minutes per candidate. Biden spent more time attacking President Trump and talking about the economy, healthcare, the election, race, climate change, the U.S. Supreme Court, voting, and taxes, according to NBC News. While Trump spent more time discussing COVID-19, civil unrest, tax returns, crime, and candidate records.

The aftermath of the chaotic debate left many Americans with negative feelings. Based on CBS News reports, 69% of viewers felt annoyed after watching the debate and 83% believed that the tone of the evening was strongly negative.

Two additional presidential debates are scheduled for Oct. 15 in Miami, Florida and Oct. 22 in Nashville, Tennessee at 9:00-10:30 p.m. EST. However, due to the president’s recent contradiction of COVID-19, it is unknown whether these debates will continue and in what format they might take place.

There are a few new shows coming to everyone’s favorite streaming services this month. From traveling to a galaxy far, far away, to seeing how the Roses are faring in the small of Schitt’s Creek, to watching how a loveable snowman came to be, there is a show for everyone.

Here are a few top shows heading to your favorite streaming services: For Netflix, we have “Schitt’s Creek” Season 6. This comedy follows the adventures of the Rose’s in the small town of Schitt’s Creek. Johnny Rose is trying to rebuild his family’s life, Moira is dealing with her acting career and trying to maintain a social status in the small town.

David is busy building his life with his partner, Patrick and Alexis is figuring out her life. What else can go wrong for this family?

There is also “Emily in Paris.” An American fashionista takes a job in Paris France at a fashion marketing firm.

Along the way, dealing with love interests, and drama

along the way. This show is on Netflix as of October 2nd.

Disney+ is offering “Once Upon a Snowman.” This short adventure brings us the story of how Olaf, the snowman from the “Frozen” movies came to life. It will answer the questions we all have, like how does he come to love summer, and what happened in the time before he ran into Kristoff and Anna in the woods? Olaf comes to Disney+ on October 23rd.

Disney+ also has “The Mandalorian Season 2: Mando” in which the loveable “baby Yoda”’ is back in another season filled with adventures across the galaxy. This time it’s filled with meeting new friends, enemies, and traveling to get baby Yoda home. Of course, it will have bumps along the way. Season 1 of The Mandalorian is currently on Disney+ and season two episodes will be available weekly starting October 31st.

“Cyberbully” movie review

This week’s movie review is about the eye-opening film, “Cyberbully.” It is about a teenager who is targeted for bullying by her classmates through a social networking site. Some of her friends try to help her but they are too afraid to stand up to the bullies.

The tension starts to rise when she tries to take her own life by trying to overdose on pills. Her best friend catches her and stops her and calls her mother. Her mother then sends her daughter to a support group to get help. The mother also goes to the school to report that her daughter was a victim of cyberbullying.

This movie came out on July 17, 2011, with the cast of Emily Osment, Kay Panabaker and Kelly Rowan. It was directed by Charles Biname.

I thought the actors did a fantastic job of playing the characters. Overall, they brought to life the reality of what happens when someone is a victim

The turn of seasons is upon us. You know what this means? The leaves will change color, it will start getting chilly, and pumpkin spice everything will be aggressively marketed to all. To get in the mood for these weather and aesthetic changes make sure your wardrobe is up to date too! Struggling for inspiration? Have no fear the EE fall fashion guide is here.

Sweater everything- It’s not called sweater weather for nothing folks! An oversized sweater will not only provide comfort and fashion, but also a little freedom to hide any extra pounds put on from all the fall snacking.

Between pumpkin spice, halloween candy, apple cider, and for some reason the sudden spike of caramel added into dessert and other treats it’s always nice to have a little extra coverage. If sweaters have already lined your closets consider added sweater dresses and sweater knit leggings for a variety of options to choose from.

Boots- The summer affair with sandals and flipflops is over. Trade them in for a chic pair of boots to help keep your feet nice warm. Boots are a little sturdier and since they are too hot to wear in the spring and summer season now is their time to shine.

Just don’t jump the gun by pulling out your snow boots. While they are necessary to any functional closet, snow boots are a little too hot for this season.

Plus wearing them will take away your few chances to wear combat boots, ankle boots, and even thigh highs in seasonally appropriate weather.

High waisted jeans- Even if leggings are a girl’s best friend, jeans still have the cute edge. Jeans are sturdier, warmer, and go better with boots.

They might not be as comfy, but they certainly do the trick! High waisted jeans will accentuate your waist-line which is often an overlooked feature. Not to mention they go with pretty much every top and shoe combo you have.

Flannel- Besides, who doesn’t love a good plaid?

Flannel is versatile and ranges from farmer chic, the punk aesthetic, hipster trendy, “I go to the farmers market” vibes, and even just good ol fashion 90’s nostalgia. They are perfect for the days when it’s just a little too hot to wear a sweater.

People with asthma might not be a risk for COVID-19

Kristin Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor During these times of COVID, there are some people with medical conditions that may be at risk for COVID like someone with asthma, diabetes or cancer.

According to WebMD.com, recent studies are starting to show that people with asthma are not becoming a high risk for COVID because of the inhaler that they are using and how often that they use their inhaler.

According to Dr. Fernando Holguin, who is the director of the Asthma Clinical and Research Program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, “The message from our study is not to be cavalier about COVID, but individuals with asthma won’t do worse than people without it.”

Asthma is also not appearing to increase the risk for a person contracting COVID or influence its severity. Social distancing could improve asthma control since people who are self-quarantined are also not exposed to seasonal triggers like allergens or respiratory viruses. Inhaled corticosteroids, which are used to protect against asthma attacks, also may reduce the virus’s ability to establish an infection.

According to NYTimes.com, asthma is only showing up in only about five percent of New York State’s fatal COVID cases. New York State, the epicenter of the outbreak in the United States, released data

on the top 10 chronic health problems suffered by people who died from coronavirus and found that asthma was absent on the list.

Health experts have generally seen little to no evidence that asthma increases the risk of developing COVID-19.

According to medicalnewstoday.com, studies are suggesting that asthma does not appear to be a significant risk factor for developing severe COVID-19 requiring hospitalization or intubation.

Asthmatics should be taking the same precautions as everyone else to prevent contracting and spreading the coronavirus such as wearing a mask, avoid people who aren’t wearing a mask, washing hands thoroughly and maintaining social distancing of six feet.

Asthmatics specifically should be keeping their asthma under control, continue using their inhaler as prescribed, making sure they are using it correctly and not skipping doses and having a 30 day supply of their medication on hand. As someone who has asthma themselves, I suggest following any of these health precautions in order to stay safe and healthy.

Kristin Turner kat5346@lockhaven.edu Opinions Editor When the Coronavirus broke out during spring break and we were forced to convert classes to online, it was strange because we are so used to doing schoolwork face-to-face. Not everybody likes doing classes online because they might not learn quite as well online like they would if they were physically in the classroom.

There are some people who learn better online and there are some people who learn better face-to-face.

I learn better when I am physically in the classroom because I’m not used to using a lot of technology like I am now more than ever this semester.

So far in this semester, Zoom has posed some complications with kicking people out of a meeting and making it hard to get back in.

I don’t think that online classes are effective because when the internet fails, it becomes frustrating and schoolwork can’t get done and it could come back to bite us.

We also lose the fellowship that we get with the professor, our class-

mates and our friends especially with the mounting amount of schoolwork that we are getting from our classes.

Now with the spring semester being mostly online just like the fall semester was mostly online, I think that it will just be the same as the fall semester with the amount of work rising and the semester becoming more stressful.

Some classes have given students the choice to attend class live, to watch the recordings of the class and do the work that is assigned or to go to class if it is face-to-face following the COVID guidelines by wearing a mask and practicing social distancing.

A couple of my classes are doing both face-to-face and live on Zoom. I go to both classes physically because I hate being stuck inside most of the time. The rest of my classes are on Zoom, but they record each class for the students who are attending class asynchronously and doing the schoolwork on their own time as

long as they get it done by the due date.

A problem with online classes is that with all of the schoolwork that we are getting, the due dates coming up fast with all of it and being stressed from all of it, we forget to take a break and go for a walk or hang out with friends to clear our mind from all the stress from all the schoolwork that we do.

Autumn is absolutely one of the best times of the year. We can argue all day about it but instead, let’s just list the ways on why it can lift spirits almost instantly: The weather- The cooler temperature is setting in for the fall season gives us a much needed break from the high heat of summer. Fall weather serves as a brief respite from polar temperatures on both ends of e summer and winter weather.

The leaves change- The beautiful yellows, oranges, reds, and the occasional purples take over the scenery with the leaves changing. While the greens of spring and summer are beautiful, they are a little monochromatic. Giving fall an aesthetic edge.

Fashion- Sweater weather is so good there is a whole song by the Neighbourhood about it. Besides, who doesn’t love putting on a good pair of boots?

Halloween- A holiday that is super scary yet super fun if you know the right people. Everyone gets to dress up, party, eat candy, and play some good pranks on others.

Thanksgiving- A month after spooky season, comes the holiday that will make everyone gain a few pounds. Thanksgiving is the time where we reminisce about family and friends while sitting around a feast filled with whatever your heart desires as long as there’s turkey!

Christmas- Another month later and everyone gets to give and receive gifts from loved ones to spread love and prosperity. And for those who are religious, they get to celebrate their different beliefs during a sacred and peaceful time. Though this is considered a more winter holiday, it still gives people life and happiness when they hear that autumn is upon us.

Philadelphia 76’ers Hire New Head Coach Levi Deitz Copy Editor lwd6487@lockhaven.edu Glenn Anton “Doc” Rivers was named the new head coach of the Philadelphia 76er’s on October 3.

Rivers will be replacing Brett Brown, who was fired on August 24 after the 76er’s were swept out of the 2020 NBA Playoffs by the Boston Celtics. Rivers himself stepped down as head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers after their elimination in the conference semifinals.

Rivers began his coaching career in 1999 with the Orlando Magic. Besides the Magic and the Clippers, he has been the head coach for the Boston Celtics, with whom he won his first and only NBA Championship in 2008. He has over the course of his coaching career gained a win percentage of .576 for regular seasons and .503 for the playoffs.

During a press conference on October 7, Rivers told the media that he had intended to take a break from coaching following his exit from the Clippers, but he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to coach Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. In the interview, he said “When you look at these young players and their potential, the fact that they’ve had so much success in some ways at the ages that they are already, and where I believe they can go, for me, it was a job that I just couldn’t turn down.”

LHU’s All In Day of Giving raises over $100,000 for student-athlete Doug Spatafore Senoir Director of Athletic Communications dspatafo@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Over $100,000 was raised for LHU students during Lock Haven University’s All In Day of Giving, more than doubling the $50,000 goal for the day. The money raised during the 24-hour fundraiser, held from noon on Thursday, Sept. 24 to noon on Friday, Sept. 25 will support LHU studentathletes whose scholarship dollars were severely impacted by the economic fallout from COVID-19.

LHU Athletics suffered a deficit of nearly $500,000 in lost revenue because of the cancellation of spring and fall sports, as well as the cancellation of summer camps and clinics. A large portion of that lost funding was to go directly to supporting studentathletes in the form of scholarships. The money generated during All In helps to bridge that gap.

“The generosity of our donors, and their willingness to support our student-athletes as we navigate unprecedented challenges from a national health crisis is truly inspirational, said Joe Fiochetta, Vice President of University Advancement. “The truth is there is no easy way to replace what we’ve lost – the opportunity to compete and to celebrate our proud athletics traditions — but the money raised during All In is a great way to support our students and each of our athletics programs.”

638 donations from alumni, fans, local businesses, and sponsors like PSECU, UGI and the LHU Foundation, resulted in a final total of $101,472, including more than $6,000 for the LHU Athletics Department’s General Scholarship Fund.

“I want to sincerely thank our alumni, parents, businesses, donors, supporters and the friends of Haven Nation for making this year’s All in Day of Giving a huge success,” Dr. Tom Gioglio, LHU Director of Athletics said.

“COVID-19 has created challenges no one could of have ever anticipated, making the need for donor support more critical than ever. Every contribution made by our donors is impactful. It will make a difference and has the power to transform student success, as well as their lives.”
