Summary of Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearings Alex Ross A&E Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu From March 21 and 24, the United States Senate scheduled confirmation hearings for Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Supreme Court nomination. In these hearings, the Senate Judiciary Committee asked Jackson questions based on her legal career as a district court judge. The committee was made up of 22 members split evenly between Democrats and Republicans. Notable senators in this committee are Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, Amy Klobuchar, Cory Booker, Ben Sasse, and Dianne Feinstein. After Jackson delivered her opening statement on March 21, Democrats and Republicans both gave opening statements where Democrats mainly focused on Jackson’s qualifications and the importance of her nomination. Republicans, however, conveyed their concern over her previous rulings. A highlight from the first of hearings was an exchange between Jackson and Ted Cruz. Cruz asked of Jackson her thoughts on the book “Antiracist Baby” and whether or not she believes that “babies are racist.” Jackson responded back saying she never read the book before and disagrees with making children feel they were racist. On the second day, Jackson was questioned by both sides about her thoughts on a range of topics for 13 hours. Josh Hawley, a Republican senator from Missouri, claimed Jackson was much too tolerant in sen-
tencing cases involving child pornography. Jackson confirmed her stance on her judgements, saying those crimes are “sickening” and saying her judgements were harsh enough. On March 23, Jackson faced more questioning for 10 hours. This round of questions mainly dealt with her judgements on cases. Jackson stated that she will abstain from the Supreme Court’s review of Students for Fair Admission v. President and Fellows of Harvard College due to her position on the Harvard Board of Overseers. Senators on the committee were concerned over the possible conflict of interest it may have caused. The final day of questioning had the committee hear from witnesses from the American Bar Association. Over 200 attorneys that worked with Jackson were interviewed by the committee. Her supporters proclaimed she was extremely knowledgeable in the law. Alabama’s Attorney General Steve Marshall also gave a testimony where Marshall did not acknowledge Joe Biden as the elected President of the United States. The committee was tied on advancing Jackson’s nomination on April 4 where 11 voted against while 11 voted to continue. On April 7 however, Jackson was confirmed by the senate, 53-47. She will become the first black female to sit on the Supreme Court.

Update on Ukraine-Russia conflict Joel Robinson Staff Writer jmr4508@lockhaven.edu Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, and to this day has continued to push further into Ukrainian territory. During the month of March, Russia bombarded the cities of Ukraine with multiple strikes. Several Ukrainian military forces as well as civilians were killed in the strikes. Furthermore, it was reported that “about 95% of the troops Russia had stationed around Ukraine before the start of the war were now inside the country” according to CBS News. Russian president Vladimir Putin has been very clear that he intends to dominate the whole country. Back in 2014, Russia invaded and annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine. And, in the time since Feb. 24 Russia has taken Kherson, Crimea, Mariupol, Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Luhansk. In addition to a wide range of territory around Ukraine’s eastern border. U.S. President Joe Biden has spoken out against Vladimir Putin in Warsaw, Poland, on Saturday, “For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power.” Biden went on to say “This battle will not be won in days or months either. We need to steel ourselves for the long fight ahead.” The world continues to put sanctions on Russia in hopes to cripple its economy. This has included even seizing a $60 million dollar yacht from Russian Billionaire Alisher Usmanov. The U.N. continues to speak out against the Russian war crimes however no military action has yet taken place from other nations to defend Ukraine. But the E.U. and U.S. have taken in many Ukraine refugees with the U.S. planning on taking in 100,000. As the war continues our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine. In the words of Mother Teresa “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.”

The brotherly duo, Joel and Luke Smallbone, of the band for KING & COUNTRY, released a new album entitled “What Are We Waiting For?” on March 11. This is the fifth album composed by the Australian natives which succeeds several of their other influential Christian-based albums, including “Crave” (2012) and “Run Wild” (2014), . Since KING & COUNTRY’s establishment in 2007, the Smallbone brothers have been well known for spreading the Gospel through their music. In this recent 13-track album, the brothers redirect their typical messages of praise to address prevalent social issues (i.e., COVID-19, racial tensions, etc.) that have been plaguing the United States in recent years. Although, let me be quick to mention that God is not completely extinguished from their album. The glorification of the Lord is incorporated lightly, such as in “For God Is With Us” and the album’s delicate closer, “Benediction.” While God remains the central driving force of the band’s discography, “What Are We Waiting For?” offers a unique divergence. The empathetic themes of the album are introduced and recognized early on as it opens on a strong note with the promotional single “RELATE.” In a world where individuals are separated based on differences, “RELATE” allows listeners to reconsider the boundaries that divide humans by encouraging them to recognize the emotional similarities that
all people share. A similar sentiment of community and compassion continues into the follow-up song “Broken Halos.” The upbeat, electric anthem serves as a friendly reminder that we all are imperfect people and make mistakes. One unforgettable track featured on the album that is critical to mention is “Unsung Hero.” This sweet and soft song is a family dedication highlighting the influential impacts that their parents had on their own lives. “Seasons” and “Love Me Like I Am” also reinforce the album’s emphasis on relationship values. Despite my favoritism toward for KING & COUNTRY, there were a few songs on their latest album that disappointed me. While the band’s collaboration with Christian artist Dante Bowe in “Unity” allowed them to enter new territory with R&B influence, the song’s repetitive “ay-a, ay-a, ay-a” was too painstaking. The unifying message of the song was quickly forgotten because all that stuck in my head was the valueless background sounds. All in all, What Are We Waiting For? provides listeners with messages of hope that prove to be inspirational as the nation currently faces many dark and challenging times. However, I would have to agree with music critic, Timothy Yap, that perhaps for KING & COUNTRY should have renamed their newest album “RELATE” in order to more effectively reflect the album’s recurring themes of community, encouragement, and relationships.

The 64th annual Grammy Awards took place on Sunday April 3. The ceremony was hosted by comedian Trevor Noah at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The ceremony was originally supposed to happen at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, but COVID-19 concerns caused it to be pushed to a later date. The night included performances from several nominees, including Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, Billie Eilish, Silk Sonic, and Lady Gaga. Singer-songwriter Jon Batiste garnered the most nominations this year with 11. Artists Doja Cat, H.E.R., and Justin Bieber came in a close second with 8 each. Batiste also ended up taking the most awards home at five, including the award for Album of the Year for his album We Are. Other nominees included Doja Cat’s Planet Her, Justin Bieber’s Justice, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s Love for Sale, and Taylor Swift’s Evermore. Batiste also received awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year for the song “Leave the Door Open” as a part of the duo Silk Sonic alongside Bruno Mars. The song was the debut single for Silk Sonic, released back in March of 2021. They beat out the likes of Oliva Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, ABBA, and Billie Eilish. Silk Sonic also tied for the win with Jazmine Sullivan for the Best R&B Performance. Olivia Rodrigo took home the award for Best New Artist, beating out artists such as Jimmie Allen, The Kid Laroi, and Saweetie. Rodrigo
started her career as an actor on the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark. She then became a cast member on the series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and began focusing on her music career. She released her debut single “Driver’s License” in January of 2021, and it quickly topped the Billboard Hot 100, making Rodrigo the youngest artist to ever top the chart. The song was featured on her debut album Sour, which took home the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album Rodrigo also took home the Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Driver’s License” against Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, and Ariana Grande. Other wins in the “Pop” category included Doja Cat and SZA for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Kiss Me More”, and Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for Love for Sale. Jazmine Sullivan took home her first Grammy after being nominated 15 times over a 19-year career. She took home the Grammys for Best R&B performance and Best R&B Album for her album Heaux Tales. Tyler the Creator received the award for Best Rap Album for Call Me If You Get Lost, and The Foo Fighters received the award for Best Rock Album for Medicine at Midnight. According to the New York Post, 8.9 million people watched the Grammys this year on CBS and Paramount Plus. This is barely up from last year’s 8.8 million, which was also an all-time low figure.

Life can be very drab at times, especially in an area where it rains every day. Those darn grey clouds really mute what could be such a vividly bright day. So, add some color to your life with this playlist! 1. “Red Rain” – Peter Gabriel: Gabriel To start off things, let’s take it a little slow. Peter Gabriel’s “Red Rain” is a lush piece with lyrics referring to an absurd dream Gabriel once had. While brooding in nature, “Red Rain” features beautiful instrumentation with passionate vocals on Gabriel’s part. 2. “Orange Crush” – R.E.M.: R.E.M. Alt. rock legends R.E.M. were in something of a career valley when they released “Orange Crush.” This was after Their critically acclaimed “Document” album and before their wildly successful “Automatic for People” record. Still, “Orange Crush” is a fantastic song steeped in political anger. 3. “Yellow” – Coldplay: Coldplay Coldplay is the perfect band… to end a movie or tv show with. They are able to condense so much bittersweet emotion into less than 5 minutes. Their songs always feel like emotional rollercoaster rides that tear me up. 4. “Collard Greens” – Schoolboy Q: Q This song exudes coolness. Schoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar both have no problems showing off their killer skills as rappers. The music video only adds that.
5. “Blue Boy” – Mac Demarco: Demarco A lot of Mac Demarco songs, this one specifically, make me think of the beach. There is some twang or tone in that guitar of his that warps me into a sunny place in the sand where the waves are hitting the shore. Such a lovely feeling. 6. “The Purple Bottle” – Animal Collective: One of my favorite songs by one of my tive favorite bands of all time. The always eclectic indie group Animal Collective are at their weirdest here, and I love them for it. 7. “Pink Turns to Blue” – Husker Du: Du Woah, two colors in the title of this song? That is so crazy! I know I shouldn’t be so sarcastic and cracking jokes over a very serious and dark song, but hey I have to add some fun to it.

All fast-food enthusiasts know the most difficult part of placing their order—what they want to go with their burger. Below is a comprehensive list of all the best sides for your meal. Macaroni bites. Macaroni and cheese is good on its own, sure. Deep frying it makes it one hundred times better. Sure it’s much more unhealthy, but the satisfaction of biting into a crunchy shell and having the cheese ooze out is incomparable. The best ones are from Sheetz, but any will do. Mozzarella sticks. Cheese sticks with some marinara sauce? Could life get any better? If I had to specify where exactly I get my mozz sticks, it would be Sheetz. There is something so good about them. Crunchy breading with the smooth and creamy cheese leaves me salivating for more. Jalapeno poppers. Specifically from Arby’s. The cream cheese filling in battered and deepfried pepper was more than itself. Then it’s taken to the next level when dipped in Berry Brounco sauce. To say they are highly addictive would be a bit of an understatement. Plain old French fries. A seemingly “boring” choice, I know, but a classic nonetheless. You could also have cheese fries if you want something a little less simple, though in my opinion there’s nothing that quite beats regular fries salted to perfection. They’re the perfect way to end a long day.
Whatever you choose to have with your meal, don’t forget to spice things up every once in a while. You’ll never know what may surprise you the next time you decide you don’t want to cook at home.

Was Will Smith right in slapping Chris Rock? Alex Ross A&E Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu
The Oscars often bring a lot of movie news to the front of many newspapers, magazines, and news sites last week. Which film won best picture? Who won best actor and actress? Did anybody wear a wild outfit to the red carpet? Did anybody slip and fall on their way to getting their award? This year, however, brough much different drama; a slap. I am sure by now you have seen the stories, the apologies, and the outlandishly creative memes of Will Smith smacking Chris Rock. “The Slap” (as I like to call it) has been seen everywhere on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, basically any and all social media that exists. No matter your take on the whole situation, you have to admit there is some comedy in it. Nobody was expecting such a thing to happen, especially at a nationally televised awards show seen by millions across the globe. However, I have seen a question popped up online over the whole debacle and that is “Was Will right in smacking Chris?” This is a question that should rightfully be asked, as Will essentially embarrassed himself, his wife Jada-Pinkett Smith, Chris Rock, and the Academy as an institution. In this respect, Smith went too far. A private conversation with Chris about the joke would have been the more mature solution, but he let his inner feelings get to him. Was Will right in defending his wife? Absolutely! I don’t think anybody should be denying that. But he couldn’t hold back the anger and let it get to the best of him. What makes the whole situation hilarious to me is how Will won best actor in a leading role later that night for his part in “King Richard,” a film about the Williams tennis family.
Smith represented the family whether he wanted to or not by being there and by making a fool of himself on tv, he directly made a fool of the Williams family. Will Smith has since apologized to Chris Rock, the Academy, and the Williams family. He also resigned from his role in the Academy. The Academy is still up in arms over whether or not they will take away his award. I, for one, hope they don’t because I think looking back on this event will make the history of the best actor award much more interesting.

The Oscars, otherwise known as the Academy Awards, gives out awards to individuals apart of the entertainment industry for their artistic elements and skills. This is an opportunity for various celebrities to dress and impress or have a fashion disaster. It is my job to declare who was best dressed for this years’ Oscars and remember these are my picks. 1. Renate Reinsve- Her whole outfit gives off vampire-impressed vibes especially with her pale complexation with a dark lip. Compared to the other looks, this entire outfit is dark yet mysterious which I can appreciate. 2. Timothee Chalamet- I support anyone who can pull off a shirtless black tux moment anywhere, anytime. Another applauds to him for wearing a silver chain plus his rings stand out in his outfit. The sequence on his blazer adds extra texture to his muted tux.
3. Kristen Stewert- Any look from this actor, I support and will defend. She as well pulled off the bare chest tux look. What is different about Stewert’s look is that she is wearing shorts instead of the normal pant suit. Another plus is her slick back hair that frames her face nicely. 4. Kodi Smit-McPhee- I appreciate how McPhee can pull a one-color tux moment especially baby blue without it giving off prom vibes. What made him on this list was because of my appreciation for his distinctive blue boots. 5. Megan Thee Stallion- This mermaid dress fits Stallion’s boss personality. The slick back-bun compliments her smokey eye makeup. I appreciate how she didn’t incorporate a necklace and had more emphasize on bracelets because majority of other celebrities had distinguishing chains.

Caitlin Marrow Caitlin Morrow enjoyed an explosive week on offense for the LHU Lacrosse team and as such, she earned PSAC Athlete of the Week for her efforts. The Bald Eagles took down Slippery Rock 19-14 on Saturday afternoon, and were just edged out by No. 22 Seton Hill on Wednesday 14-13. Morrow scored nine goals en route to an 11-point week as she led LHU to a 1-1 week in PSAC play. Morrow scored on half of her shots while also converting 40% of her free positions (2-of-5). The forward scored four goals and an assist in the weekday loss against No. 22 Seton Hill, including two tallies in the last five minutes to keep the Bald Eagles in the match. She finished off the week with five goals and an assist against Slippery Rock, scoring on both of her free positions in the victory.
Ethan Rogers On Saturday at the Colonial Relays, Ethan Rogers ran a stellar 32:26.82 in the 10,000-meter run. The time lifted him to a ninth place overall finish and he was the top Division II finisher in the field. The time marked a huge, 45-second personal best and currently ranks as the PSAC No. 1 by over 20 seconds.

The Lock Haven University Bald Eagles are back in action at Hubert Jack Stadium as Spring ball has kicked off. Wednesday marked the second day of practices for new head coach Dan Mulrooney. The Bald Eagles look to bounce back from a disappointing 1-10 season last year in which they averaged only 13 points per game while letting up 44 per game. However, with a new head coach and other new assistant coaches the Bald Eagles are looking to build. “The build is exciting; the process of building is exciting. Ultimately, in a system like this, when you know the build is gonna be really drastic that’s super exciting. To be able to set the culture they want, set your culture and what you expect, the standard of what you expect, and watch it keep building. It’s why you do it. I can’t sleep a night because I can’t wait to see, not a matter of if not a matter of when this program kicks off. At the end of the day you need to build it every single day and it takes a lot of energy and time, but I believe I’m the right man for the job.” said coach Mulrooney.
Returning for the Bald Eagles this season is senior wide receiver Justin White. White appeared in all 11 games last season for the Bald Eagles. This Spring White is looking to grow and have fun. “The biggest thing I’m taking away from this spring is the opportunity to grow as a player. Not only physically but mentally and being able to process things at a faster pace. And to just have fun, this is my last year. I’m ready to have fun with my teammates and enjoy being with my teammates.

Lacrosse runs past Edinboro, 16-2 Doug Spatafore Senior Director of Athletic Communicatuins & Marketing Dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Six players each tallied multiple goals to lead the Lock Haven University lacrosse team (6-4, 3-3 PSAC) to a 16-2 victory over Edinboro University (1-8, 0-5 PSAC) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Division action on Tuesday afternoon. With the victory, Lock Haven extends it winning streak with the Fighting Scots to 13 games in a series that dates back to 2009. The Bald Eagles wasted little time getting on the board in the midweek showdown. Casey Hibbard (Ontario, N.Y./ Wayne Central) needed just 28 seconds to notch her 12th goal of the season and put LHU out in front by a 1-0 tally. Lock Haven’s goals came in bunches over the remainder of the first quarter. Three straight goals allowed the Bald Eagles to surge to a 4-0 lead with 9:50 to play in the opening stanza before the Fighting Scots responded with a goal just over a minute later. Following the Edinboro tally, the Bald Eagles registered seven goals in a row to end the first quarter and take an 11-1 lead after 15 minutes of play. In a fast-moving second quarter, three more LHU goals sent the Bald Eagles into the locker room with a 14-1 advantage. In a slowed second half, Lock Haven put the finishing touches on the victory with a single tally in the final frame as the Bald Eagles rode away with a 16-2 triumph. Bucks South) and Emma Williams (Garnet Valley, Pa./ Garnet Valley) each registered two goals to lead the Lock Haven offense. The Bald Eagles rattled off 34 shots in the win. Katrinak’s four points off two goals and two assists was a game-high, and the trio of Bald Eagle goalkeepers was forced to make just one save on the day. On the draw, Abby Greene (Winter Springs, Fla./Oviedo) earned five draw controls to lead the Bald Eagles to a 14-7 advantage. LHU also owned a 22-14 advantage in ground balls. The Bald Eagles are back in action on Saturday, April 9 when they host Gannon University. Opening draw against the Golden Knights is set for 2 p.m.
