Riot Grrrl genre explained Alex Ross A&E Section Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu
Punk, at its base, was always meant to be anti-establishment and to challenge mainstream ideals. With this in mind, Riot Grrrl was able to do exactly whilst also attacking those within punk music. A mostly all-girl genre from the early 90s chased away sexism by sparking the next wave of feminism all within the boundaries of a mostly male music scene. The roots of Riot Grrrl grew out of Olympia, Seattle, and Washington D.C. where many bands followed a “do-it-yourself” (DIY) mindset. Artists in these areas took it upon themselves to promote their own works with their own companies and music labels. Kathleen Hanna grew up in the Olympia area and, from the advice of her favorite writer, started making music that had an abrasive attitude and feminist edge. Hanna would eventually form Bikini Kill with three other local punks in 1990. What Bikini Kill stood for was feminist ideals and a prowoman environment at punk shows, which was somewhat unpopular at the time. Hanna and other bands would promote
girls to come to the front of the stage as a way to keep them safe from the men that would start mosh-pits at shows. “Zines,” homemade magazines that would have articles about feminism and punk ideals, were handed out at shows, often for a dollar or even free. As the scene grew, more bands like Bratmobile and Heavens to Betsy began to pop up, citing Bikini Kill and Kathleen Hanna as major influences. Even groups like Fugazi and Nirvana looked up to them in the 90s. Despite these bands having very different sounds, they all are able to fall under the genre Riot Grrrl because of their antipatriarchal lyrical content and constant involvement within the scene. While the scene fizzled out by the mid-90s, Riot Grrrl’s influence can be seen all over the place in modern bands like Paramore and Skating Polly. “Rebel Girl” by Bikini Kill, “Cool Schmool” by Bratmobile, and “She’s the One” by Heavens to Betsy are all fantastic beginning points for the genre.

The essential Riot Grrrl playlist Kassidee Wozniak Online Editor kbw191@lockhaven.edu
To coincide with our article explaining the Riot Grrrl genre, we created a playlist to show off the diversity of Riot Grrrl and its influence in modern music. From the beginning of the genre, to today, here are the best songs of Riot Grrrl. “Rebel Girl” by Bikini Kill Bikini Kill originated in Olympia and created the Riot Grrrl scene all to themselves (and some other bands we will bring up here). “Rebel Girl” is probably their most famous song, but that isn’t without reason. Kathleen Hanna screams like her life depends on it, the guitar has a crunchy tone with an addicting riff, and the chorus is masterful in being anthemic-ly catchy. “Cool Schmool” by Bratmobile - Bratmobile is notable for being the second band to consider themselves “Riot Grrrl” despite sounding quite different from Bikini Kill. “Cool Schmool” is their defining song. “She’s the One” by Heavens to Betsy - Corin Tucker, a member of Sleater-Kinney, was also involved in the scene and this was her contribution, Heavens to Betsy which is just as raw as their contemporaries.
“Hot Topic” by Le Tigre While the Riot Grrrl did fizzle down by the late 90s, Le Tigre (created by Kathleen Hanna) still held onto the messaging that Bikini Kill and Bratmobile wanted to spread. The theme of the song is essentially one big shout out to the artists and women that inspired them. “Pretend We’re Dead” by L7 - While not directly Riot Grrrl, L7 were very close to the bands and the members of the attempted 3rd wave of feminism. Considerably more grunge than any of the other bands here, they still deserve attention. “Modern Girl” by Sleater Kinney - Corin Tucker shows up again in her band involving Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss that clearly wears the Riot Grrrl ethos on their sleeves. “Camelot” by Skating Polly - Modern bands like Skating Polly and Paramore have shown very obvious references to Bikini Kill and other bands, whether they are intentional or not. The genre really pushed the boundaries of women in punk to a whole new ground. Without them, Skating Polly wouldn’t exist.

Tips for moving out Kit Taveras Lifestyles Editor mxt9438@lockhaven.edu As the month of May—and finals week—steadily approaches, it’s important to be mindful that, for students living on campus, it is also almost time to begin preparing to move out. Unlike fall, winter, and spring break, where students were permitted to leave belongings behind, the summer break doesn’t allow that luxury. Everything needs to be packed, and the idea of getting all of your belongings organized may be overwhelming to some. Worry not, however, as this article gives you some quick tips for keeping it together as you get all your boxes in order. Don’t wait until the last minute. Especially if you have a lot of things to pack, which most people probably will, don’t put it off until the night before. It’ll only create more stress for you. Start packing a little bit every day in advance instead, to both keep everything organized and save yourself the agony of tearing your room apart to make sure you’re ready for your ride in time. Keep everything organized. To build off the last point, keeping all your items organized when you pack will not only save you extra time when you eventually get home but also make the packing process easier. Consider labeling your boxes or containers and try not to pack everything all at once, as it may create confusion. Set a date and time. This may sound simple, but is actually a crucial step. If you can’t be your own ride, make sure you find one. If something goes wrong, have a backup plan so that you aren’t stressed and confused on the day of. Make sure you have everything in order the day arrives so you can get out of there as soon as possible! Clean up after yourself. The last thing you want is to make a bad impression once your room is checked after you move out. Sweep up those dust bunnies and
spray down every nook and crevice. Hopefully you haven’t caused any damage, either, so your room will be spick and span once you’re ready to go!

Horoscopes Aries. As much as you want to hear from your friend, you could well get so caught up in your work that you wouldn’t hear a marching band go by. If you’re single, you’re likely to attract a lot of attention and possibly meet someone new and exciting. Take care that you make the effort to see the real person and not just a romantic image. How you respond, of course, is up to you, but if you don’t reciprocate this person’s feelings, don’t respond positively simply because you’re flattered. Libra. Your desire to respect and honor the special someone in your life clashes today with an equally strong desire to become a passionate persuader. The secret to resolving this conflict lies in knowing that the two aren’t mutually exclusive.

So unless your situation is urgent, just sit back and wait. Aquarius. Sex and romance are top priority for you today. You’re looking especially beautiful, you’re feeling especially sensual, and you could well attract admiring looks from strangers. You might want to indulge in some new clothes or perhaps new cologne. The implications of Elon Musk buying Twitter Alex Ross A&E Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu
News broke out on many outlets that Elon Musk has plans to buy Twitter, offering shareholders a whopping $43 million dollars. Musk, who is already a stockholder in the company, claims he has big plans for Twitter’s future that he wishes to see implemented. However, what does this mean and why would Elon want to own the social media platform? When Elon Musk isn’t spreading COVID-19 misinformation or treating his SpaceX and Tesla employees like cattle, he spends his time posting on Twitter. What does Elon post on Twitter? Whatever he likes of course, even if it is transphobic rhetoric (and with his ex-wife yelling at him for it). Some could see that as harmless, as it is only a rich and famous person with plenty of social power stating his opinion on the internet. No harm has ever come out of that right? In 2018, Musk tweeted that he was “considering taking Tesla private at $420,” referring to the stock price. What this did was make Tesla’s stock price very shaky, harming plenty of stockholders in the company. Critics of Elon and market experts saw this as a manipulation of the market and was illegal. If Musk feels suited to post whatever he and everybody else wants, no matter the implications, then that could mean a whole host of issues. There are reasons people are not allowed to tweet certain statements, as it could endanger the lives of other users. Death threats and doxing are not helpful for anyone except for those who wish to harm.
Musk has been extremely outspoken of his wishes to change Twitter’s policies to fit his view of free speech. In a poll on his Twitter account, where over two million people participated, over 70 percent does not adhere to “free speech” (whatever that means). While this may be true, Twitter is a private company and does not have to follow a “functional democracy’s” rules. My question for Elon is what exactly are the policies he plans on implementing? Much of my expectations are based off of my preconceived notions of Musk, but I do not doubt he can do good to the site. I am just very skeptical.

The Senior experience at LHU Cassandra Keller Managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu
Everyone’s experience as a senior is vastly different depending on the school you attend as well as the people you experience your last semester with. Although I can’t say the senior experience at LHU is the most unique, I feel like it’s one of the most straightforward. Near the beginning of the semester you get an email about having to fill out a graduation application. It is relatively easy to fill out since you have access to fill in most of the information it asks for. Anything else you need can be filled in by your advisor and since you need them to sign off on it, that makes it all the easier to turn in. Depending on who is the department chair that semester, you might have to take the application to the chair. Then you just wait for the confirmation. Throughout the rest of semester, LHU sends out email and reminders for just about everything else you need to do in order to get set up for the actual ceremony. Even dorm residents have a specialized process for those who need to stay until the ceremony. Overall LHU has made the graduation process as simple as possible and when the semester gets stressful, that is one blessing every student needs. That being said, every organization process has its own kinks and issues. As a senior, I have had little to no interaction on post-college related topics. LHU does have access to job search accounts for students such as Handshake.com, but there has been no push to use it or instruction on how students can fully utilize it.
Follow through is a huge part of how colleges build up a relationship with their alumni. I personally enjoyed my time at LHU so I will without a doubt be an active alumna. I just think more prep for life after college would do students as well as the university itself some good. Especially with the university integration and the problems it has caused.

Athletic Programs at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield Universities to remain independent. Julie Stellfox Assistant Director of Media Relations Jms833@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield universities have received NCAA approval to proceed with their plan to retain a full complement of NCAA athletic programs on the campuses that currently host them. Each campus will maintain its full menu sports offerings and remain wholly independent of each other. All athletic programs will continue to use their respective location name, existing logos, colors, mascots, and traditions. “I extend our thanks to our NCAA colleagues and the Membership Committee for its consideration and approval of our plan to maintain the full complement of athletic teams at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield,” said Bashar W. Hanna, president of Bloomsburg University and interim president of Lock Haven and Mansfield universities. “Through our collaboration, we’ve ensured that our student-athletes have the opportunity to compete as they do today. Intercollegiate athletics hold a special place as part of the fabric of each of our campus communities and institutional brands. Together we can confidently move forward into the 2022-23 academic year and beyond - to cheer on the Huskies, Bald Eagles, and Mounties.” “The NCAA’s decision is another major decision toward building these powerhouse institutions and is great news for our universities, our system, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, and above all, our student-athletes,” said Dr. Daniel Greenstein, chancellor of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. “I congratulate President Bashar Hanna, students, faculty, staff, and trustees at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield for this accomplishment. The excitement of intercollegiate athletics will continue for players and fans when the integrated university begins enrolling students in August.” Bloomsburg sponsors 23 varsity athletic programs including an NCAA Division I men’s wrestling program that competes in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Lock Haven sponsors 21 varsity athletic programs including Division I men’s wrestling and field hockey. The men’s wrestling program is an affiliate member of the MAC and the field hockey team competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10). Mansfield sponsors 13 varsity athletic programs including
sprint football, which is a member of the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL). The integration of Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield universities is a bold investment in the communities and people of Pennsylvania with the mission to expand high-quality, affordable academic opportunities to support the needs of all learners. First proposed in September 2020, the integration plan received initial approval by the institutional accrediting agency, Middle States Commission on Higher Education in March 2022. The three institutions will officially unite as Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania on July 1, 2022, though each will retain their respective location name - Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield - maintaining existing logos, colors, mascots, and traditions. Existing foundations and alumni associations will remain separate and continue to support their respective campuses. Donors can continue to designate funds to support programs or a campus of their choosing. For more information on integration, visit lockhaven.edu/integration.
