First black woman nominated for U.S. Supreme Court Alex Ross A&E Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu

President Joe Biden has announced his nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. Ketanji Brown Jackson, a 51 year old female attorney from Washington D.C. was chosen as Biden’s pick for Supreme Court.

In late January, Justice Stephen Breyer announced his retirement. His retirement will begin once his term is finished. Breyer’s replacement, Jackson, was announced on Feb. 25.

This comes as no surprise as Biden announced even before being elected as president that he will nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court.

Jackson has said of her nomination “My life has been blessed beyond measure and I do know that one can only come this far by faith.”

Biden chose Jackson over other nominees after reading her writings and familiarizing with her opinions. However, Biden was very impressed by Jackson’s upbringing as a child of two public school teachers.

She also notably moved up the ranks in the court system, originally working as a public defender. Eventually Jackson moved up all the way to a federal appellate judge.

While Jackson will be the first black woman to be nominated for the Supreme Court, it will not change the political balance of the Court.

There are six conservatives and three liberals sitting on the bench, with Breyer being one of those liberals.

The importance of Jackson’s nomination

will not change the potential decisions of the Court itself, as most outcomes of their cases are expected to still fall right, according to CNN. These major cases are expected to involve subjects such as gun control and abortion.

While Jackson’s position is not set in stone just yet, she is expected to take the position anyways as Democrats do not need Republicans’ help to confirm her. If the nomination process is smooth, Jackson will be confirmed on April 11 of this year.

Kanye shares concerning music video for new song “Eazy” Alex Ross A&E Section Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu

Kanye West released his new music video for the song “Eazy” which features brutal imagery of Kanye murdering a Pete Davison lookalike. The video premiered on West’s YouTube channel on March 3rd.

The music video is half Claymation, half real life, and depicts rappers The Game and Kanye West and a character that closely resembles comedian Pete Davidson.

“Eazy” already had controversy surrounding itself, with the cover of the song being a skinned monkey held against a solid red background. People for the Ethic Treatment of Animals (PETA) heavily criticized the artwork in a twitter post saying, “The disturbing image of a skinned monkey that [Kanye West] shared serves as a reminder that there’s no real difference between humans & other animals.”

Within the song, Kanye rapped “God saved me from that crash / just so I can beat Pete Davidson’s ass.” With these lyrics, Kanye directly made threats towards Davidson, who was seen with Ye’s ex-wife Kim Kardashian only weeks before the song’s release.

This context supports the idea that Pete Davidson is represented in the music video for “Eazy.”

The music video begins with The Game in both Claymation form and real life, rapping his verse whilst on top of a coffin.

West, however, first appears on a motorcycle, kidnapping Davidson’s character. Then an image of West holding a bloody and battered head, assumed to represent Davidson’s head.

After dragging the Claymation body of Davidson, Ye buries him in the ground, plants flower seeds around him, and has the flowers grow around Davidson.

Finally, Davidson’s head is decapitated and carried off by West.

According to a source from ET, Davidson reportedly found the video to be “hysterical” and was “flattered” by it. Davidson and Kardashian allegedly grew closer because of the situation.

People reports Kardashian is completely “over” the whole situation and “wants it to stop.”

Kardashian started dating Davidson in November 2021 and was finally declared legally single on March 3rd, officially ending her marriage with West.

All Batman fans went berserk to the news of this trailer dropping, and the trailer did not disappoint.

This time Robert Patterson is the new face of Batman being the 10th person to bring Batman to life.

The main DC villain in this film is the Riddler with another side villain Penguin, and Catwoman also appears in the film. In this article, I will discuss my thoughts from what is shown in the 2 min trailer and my expectations for the movie.

The opening seconds imply that the villain is The Riddler with his iconic question mark symbol in the coffee cup. First time seeing Patterson in the Batman suit, he suits the mask well with his facial structure… strong jawline.

Other villain subgroups are wearing face paint and could be the Joker’s minions and I’m sure the movie will clear the air on that as-

sumption. The quote about the Batman symbol said “It’s not a call, it’s a warning” which insinuates Batman is not the superhero and the people of Gotham need to fear his presence.

Why has the Riddler been trying to reach out to Batman and what is yet to come to the city of Gotham?

Catwoman and Batman’s relationship is showcased in this trailer as Batman trying to protect someone who doesn’t want to be protected.

I think Catwoman will provide Batman a lot of information regarding what is happening in Gotham behind closed doors. There are clues that Batman is experiencing depression in understanding his father was not indeed a good man.

From this trailer, I expect the movie to be an exciting ride from start to end!

Relationships can be extremely hard to navigate sometimes, especially when you and your partner have different love languages without realizing it. Before getting to know the specifics about the many kinds of love languages, you need to understand what love languages are.

According to the urban dictionary, love languages are “the ways you express your feelings of love toward someone or something you love, or have love for.” Love languages are also how you experience love as well. There are 5 different types: Words of Affirmation: People with this love language feel love mostly through hearing it said to them and by frequently receiving genuine encouragement. Unexpected notes or texts along with active listening will help these people feel more loved.

Physical Touch: With this love language, non-verbal communication and body language is important. People with this one feel loved when they receive any form of physical contact such as hugs or even hand holding.

Receiving Gifts: Everyone likes getting gifts, but someone with this love language feels most loved when they receive a thoughtful gift from their partners. Holding purposeful conversations as well as showing gratitude when receiving gifts are also good to keep in mind when in a relationship with people who have this love language.

Quality Time: People that have this love language feel most loved when their partners spend a lot of time with them. So actively planning uninterrupted time to spend together will help make people with this love language feel loved.

Acts of Service: Action phrases like ‘I’ll help..’ will make these people feel supported and loved. Any action that helps these people with their daily workload or helps them relax will make them feel loved.

Now, people are all unique and can have multiple love languages since a lot of them overlap in some way, shape, or form. All this means is that if someone has a physical touch love language, they will need more physical contact than someone with a different love language to feel loved. Knowing your own love language also helps your partner know how you feel most loved as well.

With midterms coming up, tension can be high and cause some extra unwanted stress. If you’re feeling some anxiety here are a few ways to cope.

Sensory distractions are a simple method of taking your mind off whatever is making you anxious. Noise, lights, or even just thoughts can give a person anxious feelings. Sometimes a great way to handle that feeling is to ground yourself with a sensory focus. A few easy ways

to accomplish that can include: playing with slime, a sand garden, or calming strips- textured strips to rub your hand across. These things will give you a physical stimulus to focus on rather than allowing yourself to be overwhelmed by your thoughts or surroundings.

Another popular coping method recommended by therapists is the 5-4-3-2-1 method. This activity also focuses on using the five senses. You note five things you can see. This is followed by four things you can touch. Next up are three things you can hear. Two things you can smell.

Then one thing you can taste. This helps slow the mind down from the initial panic you might feel from an anxiety attack.

If sensory therapy isn’t your cup of tea here are a few mental activities you can practice when feeling on edge. Anchor statements are grounding statements that keep you in the moment. These can be any statement(s) that soothe you. However, if you are lacking inspiration a few keen ideas are facts about yourself like your name and age followed by some spicy fun facts you know.

Another method of dealing with anxiety, though evident, is simply to take a break from whatever is causing you stress. Keeping your attention fixed on the issue can make you feel worse and even lead to burnout, so distancing yourself from your work for a bit to clear your mind can be beneficial. Once you’ve calmed down somewhat, you’ll find it much easier to pick up where you left off.

Coverage of the Ukraine-Russia War Shows the Racial Bias of Western Journalists Noah Gare Guest Writer nds4327@lockhaven.edu Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24 stunned the world, and news coverage has understandably fixated on the conflict and what it will mean for humanity. As the initial shock has worn off, however, many are noticing the cultural biases that have appeared in news pieces covering the conflict.

While the correct response - to offer support and sympathy for civilians caught in a conflict they didn’t ask for - is almost too obvious to state, the U.S. and Western press cannot help but take advantage of the crisis to express racist sentiments.

For example, several journalists have treated the Ukraine-Russia conflict as uniquely horrible because it is taking place in Europe. This war, unlike the one in Yemen, or the one in Syria, or the one in Somalia, is not set in the Middle East or Africa. According to news and popular media, civilian death and government overthrow in these regions are inevitable, a part of their culture and destiny.

Moustafa Bayoumi describes some of this bias in a Guardian article, saying “They are ‘Civilized’ and ‘Look Like Us’: the Racist Coverage of Ukraine”. He quotes CBS reporter Charlie D’Agata: “[Ukraine] isn’t a place... like Iraq or Afghanistan, that has seen conflict raging for decades. This is a relatively civilized, relatively European... city, one where you wouldn’t expect that, or hope that it’s going to happen”.

A statement from David Sakvarelidze, a former deputy prosecutor general of Ukraine, aired unchallenged on BBC and expressed similar sentiments: “It’s very emotional for me because I see European people with blue eyes and blond hair … being killed every day.” Such words wouldn’t be out of place on a far-right online forum, and it is shocking to see them during a television program broadcast into thousands of households.

These and other statements do a great disservice to the non-Western world and encourage casual racism against non-Europeans. To anyone who has glanced at world history, statements insinuating that people are uncivilized by virtue of living outside of Europe are laughable. During the Dark Ages, while Europe was on the brink of survival, the Islamic world flourished with art and culture, a safeguard for civilization itself. Erasing these accomplishments with lazy and misguided comments doesn’t help Ukrainians or anyone else.

In condemning atrocities, the least journalists can do is remain fair and balanced. When a civilian dies, their skin color shouldn’t determine our sympathy for them. Is it too much to ask of Western journalists to maintain a sense of perspective as we observe a conflict which will create suffering for millions and change the world we all live in?

1. Idlewild - Idlewild ranks higher than Delgrosso’s for me, as it’s the park where I got my grandmother to willingly ride Paul Bunyan’s Loggin’ Toboggan. Like most of the others ranking below this park, it’s very kid oriented; however the waterpark is fun for all ages.

2. Delgrosso’s Park and Laguna Splash Being owned by the pasta sauce company, they have the famous Spaghetti Wednesdays! They don’t have too many high energy attractions and can definitely be more kid oriented, but the waterpark?

The water park is immaculate. Who doesn’t want to swim in an Italy themed waterpark?

3. Lakemont Park - The perk to this park is that it’s small, but affordable. The downside is that there’s not a lot of high energy attractions and it’s geared more towards kids. They have an okay water park for children, but it’s nothing compared to what you can find at Delgrosso’s or Idlewild.

4. Sesame Place -This park is ranked low as it’s a children’s park, but it’s still a good park if you’re part of that demographic. Even as an adult, I like the idea of being able to meet the Sesame Street characters. It’s also been rated highly in regards to being sensory friendly— it was the first amusement park to be designated as a Certified Autism Center.

5. Dutch Wonderland - This park is ranked low for the same reason as Sesame Place, but they have a cool mascot named Duke the Dragon.

If you’re looking to vacation at any of these places, you should definitely reconsider your choices and go somewhere more exciting.

Campbell Brant Brant was vital in the Bald Eagles victory over Kutztown on Saturday. The senior attacker notched a team-best f ive points on two goals and a game-high three assists. Her free position goal with 10:48 to play in the fourth gave LHU a critical 11-9 advantage as the Bald Eagles pulled out a 13-12 thriller. Brant also picked up two ground balls on the day and her two goals came off just three total shots.

Ben Barton In the 157-pound final, Barton made it two-for-two for the Bald Eagles in the finals with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over top-seeded Johnny Lovett of Central Michigan.

Following a scoreless first period, Barton deferred his choice to the third and surrendered a quick escape in the second period but equalized the match with a penalty point on a stalling call on Lovett as the bout went to the third period at a 1-1 deadlock.

Barton chose bottom to start the third period and scored a quick escape to take a 2-1 advantage with 1:47 to go. Over the remainder of the bout, the action remained at the center of the mat as Barton upset the Chippewas top-seeded Lovett to earn his third trip to the NCAA Championships.

Standout-sprinter Riyana Owens (Red Lion, Pa./ Dallastown) of the Lock Haven University women’s indoor track & field team is set to compete in the 60-meter dash at the 2022 NCAA Division II Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The national championship meet will be held March 11-12 in Pittsburg, Kansas at the Harvey Dean Track. Pittsburg State University and Crawford County Convention and Visitors Bureau will serve as co-hosts of the championships.

Owens will make her official NCAA-championship debut on Friday afternoon. She will compete in heat three of three in the 60-meter dash prelims. The event is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. EST. Owens is coming off a sensational performance at the 2021-22 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor Championships (Feb. 26-27).

She finished second in the 60-meter dash and also scored for the Bald Eagles in the 200-meter event.

In the PSAC finals at 60 meters, Owens ran 7.55 and was edged out by only California (Pa.) University’s national-qualifier Divonne Franklin, who ran 7.54. For Owens, her time of 7.55 marked an improvement from Saturday’s prelims, and again, broke her own school record.

Owens’ school-record time of 7.55 has her ranked 18th of 20 heading into the NCAA championship meet.

For Owens, the school records fell week-afterweek and meet-by-meet during the 2021-22 season and back in early February, she became the first woman in school history to break the 25-second mark in the 200-meter dash.

She was most recently named to United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region Team yesterday (March 8) for her performances in the 60m and 200m throughout the season. She ranked second and third respectively in the Atlantic Region.
