The legacy of Pauli Murray Kassidee Wozniak Online Editor kbw191@lockhaven.edu The documentary titled “My name is Pauli Murray”, is about Pauli Murray. Born Nov. 20, 1910, in Baltimore, MD, Murray is known for their involvement in the 2nd wave feminism movement, civil and women’s rights activist, author, lawyer, and Episcopal priest. Their accomplishments are not as highlighted as the immense amount of change they implanted in the world. They made history in 1977 for becoming the first African American woman in the United States to become an Episcopal priest. Many people don’t contribute to Murray for helping the Brown vs. Board of Education case. At an early age, Murray internally felt the contrast between segregated white and black schools.
Throughout their education from K-12 to college, Murray questioned “Have I got it?”. As they grew up, Murray went as “Pauli” which is a gender-neutral name, there is speculation if Murray identifies with, she/they pronouns. Murray was the voice spreading awareness of desegregation of public transportation before Rosa Parks. When the 14th amendment was published, it was Murray that said it can be used towards women too, “Women’s rights are a part of human rights’”, said Murray. Before passing on July 01, 1985, they finished their autobiography which was published 1987 to the public. Their legacy serves as an inspiration to African Americans, women, feminists, and non-gender conforming individuals.

HIV possibly cured in woman for the first time Levi Deitz Opinions Editor lwd6487@lockhaven.edu An American research team announced on February 15 that they may have cured HIV in a woman for the first time in history. According to NBC News, these scientists used a “cutting-edge stem cell transplant method” to treat the woman. The stem cells came from a donor who has a genetic mutation, causing them to be naturally resistant to the virus that causes AIDS. The patient is described as a middle-aged woman of mixed race with leukemia. She was diagnosed with leukemia and HIV back in 2013. According to Reuters, since the woman received this treatment, she has been in remission for 14 months without the need for any more potent HIV treatments. The first case of scientists apparently curing someone with HIV happened back in 2008, when a 42-yearold American man living in Germany, who also had leukemia, received a stem-cell transplant. According to
the New York Times, the probability of finding a person with the mutation that is resistant to HIV is extremely small. The American researchers stated that, while this treatment has novel medical implications, it would be of little immediate use. NBC News stated that “This therapeutic process is meant to replace an individual’s immune system with another person’s, treating their cancer while also curing their HIV.” The first step in the treatment is for physicians to destroy the patient’s original immune system through chemotherapy. The thought behind this is that it will destroy as many HIV-harboring cells as possible. The patient will then be given the new HIV-resistant stem cells, which prevents any remaining infected cells from infecting new cells. All donors must have the rare genetic mutation that makes them resistant to HIV. The case of the “New York Patient”, as she is being called, is a part of a larger study being conducted by Dr. Yvonne J. Bryson, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. According to Reutgers, the study “Aims to follow 25 people with HIV who undergo a transplant with stem cells taken from umbilical cord blood for the treatment of cancer and other serious conditions.” Carl Dieffenbach, director of the Division of AIDS at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told NBC News that the increasing successes of HIV research and treatment “Continue to provide hope”, and “It’s important that there continues to be success along this line.”

“Celebrity Skin,” Doja Cat’s new cover song, is a disater Kassidee Wozniak Online Editor kbw191@lockhaven.edu
Doja Cat, the 26-year-old rapper, released a cover of Hole’s song “Celebrity Skin”, and it was a failure. Artists shouldn’t be discouraged to try out new genres in their musical careers. However, some artists are not successful in their attempts, in this case Doja Cat’s sound does not fit the 90’s grunge essence. Personally, I think Doja Cat tried to pull a Miley Cyrus in terms of covering a well-known song. In 2020, Miley Cyrus covered Blondie’s song “Heart of Glass” which she pulled off because Cyrus added her own flair to the song without making it unrecognizable. The reason why Doja Cat released the cover was for a Taco Bell ad for the 2022 Super Bowl. I dislike the way she tries to impersonate Courtney Love’s sound, what would have made the cover better was Cat using her own vocal range without losing her own sound. When you
compare the music normally produced by Doja Cat to this cover, fans including me are confused why her sound is drastically changed for trying a new genre of music. In my opinion, Doja Cat’s cover of Celebrity Skin doesn’t deserve to appear on the Billboard Rock Chart.

Kerri’s Break-Up Playlist Tess English Managing Editor tae7002@lockhaven.edu
So the manufactured romance of Valentine’s Day is over. You’ve either been the heartbreaker or the heartbroken. In either case, a great way to work through your feelings is a solid playlist. Here’s one for the singles in the room: “Behind The Hazel Eyes” by Kelly Clarkson - Needs no explanation. “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morisette - If you’ve ever been cheated on or been left for someone else this is the song for you. The sheer rage factor is equally impressive as it is scary. “Hot Girl Bummer” by Black Bear - If you need to follow up “You Oughta Know” with another angry song, with sad undertones here it is. Bonus points for being an absolute bop. “Consequences’’ by Camila Cabello - This is a dramatic song particularly aimed at those who were young and in love. Sometimes there is a price to pay on the learning curve of falling in love. “Break Your Little Heart” by All Time Low - This is the less common break-up song for the relationship ender. When you’ve real-
ized how toxic or unhealthy your past relationship was for you. “Rich” by Maren Morris - A jam for a single who always thought their ex was gonna change. Wasn’t that a rich idea? Pun intended. “Nicotine” by Panic! At The Disco - This song is on the list for those who still miss their ex. We know it hurts now, but you’ll get through it. “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood - It’s quintessential to every break-up playlist. We don’t encourage any behavior promoted in the song, but it sure is a satisfying daydream. “Easier” by 5 Seconds of Summer - This track is more so about someone on the cusp of breaking up, but it can be therapeutic to revisit this emotion. It’s hard to sift through the never-ending emotional cycle of break-up “All Too Well” by Taylor Swift - T. Swift is another staple of the break-up list. She’s been through it and writes it well. This song is for those who have a haunted lingering feeling about their break-ups. Also, treat yourself to Taylor’s Version. It’s lengthy but well worth the emotional journey.

Tips on managing anger Alex Ross A&E Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu
Everyone deals with anger at some point in their life. Whether it is mild irritation at a friend or immense anger at a video game level you can’t pass, frustration is a perfectly natural and healthy emotion. There is nothing wrong with expressing some bitterness. However, letting that emotion run rampant in your everyday life can become destructive and destroy relationships and even yourself. It is important to control these encounters before you reach a momentary lapse of judgment and find yourself in a regrettable situation. Here are some tips on how to manage the anger in your life. 1. Take a breather and think for a moment – Being in the heat of the moment can feel overwhelming. Sometimes the best option is to just sit and breathe for a short minute. This will give you an immediate break from what is making you angry. In this moment, you can also try to understand what exactly is making you feel this way and why. Finally, you should think of peaceful resolutions to your problem. Sometimes a second of thought is the most calming answer. 2. Change your perspective – Arguing with others can become intense, especially if there is a conflict of interests and ideas. Step out your shoes and take a walk in the other side’s pair. Consider questions like “Why do they look at the situation this way?” “What will their solution/idea bring to the table?” “What may be some positives from their solutions?” and “What are the negatives that they may see in my idea?” This might not always be the easi-
est solution to solving your anger, but it is an important one you should try and consider. 3. Leave, relax, and come back – This one is quite self-explanatory. Take a break, listen to some calming music, watch a funny video, go for a walk, exercise, etc. Gaining some distance from the anger you feel can clear your head and provide an opportunity to think. A change of environment and mood gives you the ability to put some retrospect on who or what is making you angry.

Low-key ways to spend spring break Eagle Eye Staff lockhaveneagleeye@gmail.com
Start a new hobby. A good way to spend your lowkey spring break is starting something new. Perhaps you always wanted to play guitar, learn to code, or even become more interested in movies. Find something that would be enjoyable for you, and break will go by fast!
some much needed fresh air, but it won’t put a burden on your wallet. Consider taking a hike, going for a bike ride, or having a picnic in the park with your friends or significant other. All that matters is you get off the couch and touch some grass!
Get crafty. Spring break is right before Easter, so start getting in the spirit of the season and make some crafts! Get some eggs, paint them, make your own woven basket, and make yourself (or a friend) a little fun Easter gift!
Grind some games. Spending too much time touching the grass? Tell your local boomer that you’re sick of the outside. Enjoy exploration in video games from the comfort of your own home.
Do some puzzles. Going out takes a lot of energy, and it’s probably not a good idea considering the worldwide pandemic. If you want to keep busy, try seeing how many puzzles you can do in your week off. It may sound boring, but it’s a great way to mindlessly spend your time. Just make sure you have a large enough space, and that you have all of the pieces. Catch up on your watchlist. Everyone has a list full of things they either need to do or watch which is pushed off due to lack of time. Well, now you do with spring break! Don’t feel like you need to leave your bed to watch the movies. This is your excuse to do nothing productive and just binge watch to your heart’s content! Touch some grass! Spending too much time inside? Try going outside and touching Mother Nature’s “grass.” Not only can you receive

Police interference in mental health crises Kit Taveras Lifestyles Editor mxt9438@lockhaven.edu
It is undeniably important that someone going through a mental health crisis should receive the most considerate care possible. After all, when someone is having a mental breakdown, suicidal inclinations, or otherwise, they are in a fragile and erratic state, which makes police interference involved in these crises all the more terrifying for the person experiencing it. According to Mental Health America, police interference in mental health and behavioral crises has increased substantially since around 1960, and in such cases the people experiencing extreme distress are subject to getting handcuffed, manhandled, and treated harshly by the police officers who were called to evacuate them from the premises. There’s no need to explain why this is counterproductive to the help calling the police was supposed to. As someone who has gone through several mental health crises, two of which have escalated to police intervention, I can safely assure you it helps no one in the situation. It is an inconvenience not only to the person in the midst of a crisis, but the people who called and the community surrounding them, as well. Not only is it inconvenient, but can be traumatizing, as well. Imagine: the world around you is warped and blurry, your heart is beating fast, you’re drenched with sweat, and you can’t breathe. You’re scared, and sometimes, you don’t know why. Suddenly there are loud noises, and lights, and police officers are restraining you, tying your hands together and yelling at you to calm down. Naturally, this situation would scare you even more. There’s certain prose required to calm down someone currently
stuck inside their own head as someone going through a mental health crisis is, and the police intervention simply isn’t a good method of de-escalating the situation. The American Psychological Association, in fact, advises against such police intervention in serious mental health or behavioral situations, especially when the involved person is a minor and not until officers have received training on how to properly respond to such scenarios. With a severe lack of other mental health services, perhaps a family member or friend’s first instinct would be to call the police. However, especially if the person shows no sign of calming down, it’s not always the best method of returning them to a rational mindset.

USA loses gold for ice hockey in the Olympics Ashley Larson Staff Writer ael9097@lockhaven.edu The Olympics is an event that draws in viewership from around the world, and for the Winter Olympics, one of the most interesting and spotlighted events is ice hockey. The tension between the USA and Canada in this sport is as high as ever— many broadcasters were equating the women’s gold medal game between the two countries to the “Miracle on Ice” from 1980. This year was a little bit different for Team USA. For the men, there was no involvement with the National Hockey League. In previous years, the NHL would take an Olympic break in order to display the talent from the league on the international stage. There was a benefit, though, to the lack of NHL involvement— viewers got to see some of the prospects that are in the pipelines for some of their favorite NHL teams. I personally had my eye on Noah Cates, the 2017 5th round draft pick for the Philadelphia Flyers. Unfortunately, the men’s team did not prevail and bring home a medal this year. They fell 3-2 to Slovakia in the quarterfinals. On the other hand, the women’s team was stacked with stars from around the country, such as Brianna Decker, Hilary Knight, and Savannah Harmon. During the very first game of the tournament, Decker got tangled up with Finland’s Ronja Savolainen, leading to a broken left fibula and multiple torn ligaments in her ankle. While she could no longer play, she stayed with her team and gave them support from the sidelines. There was a lot of concern about how the women’s team would compete without her. As expected, the women’s finals was a highly anticipated game between USA and Canada. Tensions were high, as Canada scored twice before Team USA could respond. It wasn’t until the third period that Team USA saw the puck hit the back of the net with a shorthanded goal from Hilary Knight. With a score of 3-1 in the final minute, Amanda Kessel was able to score on the power play, something that Team USA struggled with this year, giving the game a final score of 3-2, with Canada bringing home the gold for the fifth time since the 1998 Games.

Kamila Valieva fails drug test before Olympics Alex Ross A&E Section Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu Kamila Valieva, a 15-year-old figure skater from Russia, failed a doping test days before her performance at the Olympics. However, her suspension was lifted after a day. After performing very well in the figure skating section of the 2022 European Championships, Valieva was set to be a top performer at the Olympic Games in Beijing. However, only a few days before she was set to perform, she failed to pass a drug test. A day after her results became public, Valieva was suspended by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA). This suspension meant she would not be able to partake in her first ever performance at the Olympic Games. Despite this, the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) cancelled the suspension. This lift of suspension was due to complaints made by multiple organizations like the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Skating Union (ISU). Valieva’s excuse for failing the test was that she accidentally took her grandfather’s heart medication. Former U.S. Olympic skaters, Adam Rippon and Kaitlyn Weaver, were critical of her statement and the decision of lifting her ban. Weaver stated “I am not sure I bought it” when talking about Valieva excuse. Despite being allowed to play in the games, Valieva took home fourth place on Feb. 17. Had she taken home a medal, the podium celebration would have been cancelled due to her scandal. With the scandal surrounding her, other Russian athletes have applauded her performance and stood on her side of the whole affair. However, most other countries have been critical of the event. Most have compared her scandal to that of Sha’Carri Richardson, a U.S. sprinter who was banned for 30 days from the Tokyo Olympics due to testing positive for marijuana. Richardson even took to Twitter, tweeting “The only difference I see is I’m a black young lady.”

LHU men’s and women’s slow season start Tristan Klinefelter Staff Writer tmk432@lockhaven.edu The LHU Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams have clinched spots in the PSAC playoffs after starting off to a slow start to the season. For the men’s team, after starting the season 4-0, the Bald Eagles went just 2-12 in their next 14 game span. However, with a 5-2 record over there last 7 games, they have clinched a playoff spot. Sitting at 11-14 on the season (8-13 PSAC) with one game remaining the Bald Eagles have been consistent throughout the year averaging about 73.3 points per game. Junior guard MarkAnthony Fidelis leads the Bald Eagles with 14.5 points per game. Right behind Fidelis, Junior guard DaQuan Granberry averages 14 points per game. Senior Jesse McPherson leads the Bald Eagles in rebounds with 117 on defense and 47 on offense. And Sophomore guard Eli Washington leads the Bald Eagles in free throws made with 99 on 127 attempts. The Bald Eagles dropped their regular-season home finale to East Stroudsburg Warriors on Monday night 100-81. The Bald Eagles led early but a 30-10 run by the Warriors put the game away.
The Bald Eagles should have some confidence rolling into the playoffs as McPherson and Washington won the PSAC athlete of the week and defensive athlete of the week this past week, a clean sweep for the Bald Eagles. Head Coach Mike Nestor and The Bald Eagles will look to close out the regular season with a win as they are set to face Millersville this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Millersville and then into the PSAC Playoffs. For the women’s team they had a familiar start going 3-1 in their first four then going 9-12 in the last 21 games and 9-11 in PSAC play. Scoring 58.3 points per game the Bald Eagles are led by forward Ahnera Parker who averages 14.8 points per game. Center Jaynelle Robinson leads the Bald Eagles in rebounds with 229 total, 150 on defense, and 79 on offense. Parker also leads the Bald Eagles with 65 made free throws on 108 attempts. The Bald Eagles had a big win over West Chester last week 8559 and look to close out the regular season with two more wins to help with playoff implications over East Stroudsburg and Millersville.
