The integration of Lock Haven, Mansfield, and Bloomsburg University, got approved unanimously in July 2021. Students can find information and updates on the progress of the interrogation here.

The Northeastern Integration Program arry, found here, was announced in November 2021.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) is set to make a decision on the program arry accreditation later this spring.

The NCAA’s decision on the separate integrated sports teams is expected to be announced following the MSCHE’s decision.

“These universities have been part of the cultural and economic fabric of their communities for well over a century and they will continue to be so for years to come. Additionally, the degrees they offer to new graduates, as well as those held by alumni, will maintain the highest value,” said Chancellor Dan Greenstein.

Greenstein will be holding a virtual open forum meeting via Zoom on Feb. 23 regarding the integration’s next steps pending the MSCHE’s decision. Students are invited to attend through this accessable link.

The Russian government announced on Feb. 15 that some of its troops at Ukraine’s border are beginning to be returned to their bases.

Thousands of Russian troops began conducting military training drills last week.

According to CNBC, “more than 100,000 soldiers, tanks, missiles and even fresh blood supplies had been moved to Russia’s border with Ukraine.”

The drills were widely seen as a display of strength, and many people around the world feared a possible invasion. Russia has continued to deny any plans for an invasion, but western countries are warning that an invasion could be imminent.

Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Defense, announced Tuesday morning that the troops recently assigned to Russia’s southern and western military districts had completed their military drills. These military districts border the neighboring Ukraine.

Konashenkov said the troops “have already begun loading onto rail and road transport and will begin moving to their military garrisons today.”

He also announced that the troops conducting military troops in Belarus up north would be returning on Feb. 20.

In response to Russia’s claims, Ukrainian Foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said “We in Ukraine

have a rule: we don’t believe what we hear, we believe what we see. If a real withdrawal follows these statements, we will believe in the beginning of a real de-escalation.”

President Biden was also skeptical regarding Russia’s withdrawal and said that pulling back troops “would be good, but we have not yet verified that” and ““indeed, our analysts indicate that they remain very much in a threatening position.”

He has repeatedly stated that the U.S. would take every chance to prevent an invasion The U.S. and NATO continue to warn that Russia could invade at any time, and that they have supplied Ukraine with troops and military equipment.

According to AP News, Russian president Vladimir Putin has stated that he doesn’t want a war, and that he would “rely on negotiations as he presses his demand for the West to halt Ukraine’s bid to join NATO.” Putin did not commit to a full pullback, however, stating that Russia’s next moves will depend on the evolution of the situation.

In an interview with AP News, a civilian who lives in a village 30 km from the Russia-Ukraine border on Russia’s side said, “We are friends with Ukraine. We are really on the border, we really have relatives here and there, everyone has somebody there. No one wants a war.”

“Laurel Hell” lets Mitski embrace cold synths and ethereal delicacy Alex Ross A&E Section Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu February 4th was an immensely important day for indie music fans.

Rising stars to the indie scene, Black Country, New Road released their sophomore album, legendary neo-psychedelia group Animal Collective put out their long-anticipated eleventh studio work, and Cate Le Bon’s dreamily obtuse “Pompeii” was made public for the ears of fans. However, perhaps the most hyped release of the day was “Laurel Hell” by critical indie darling, Mitski.

This release is extremely out of character for Mitski. Typically, her previous records were lofi and guitar focused pop tunes, not synth and atmospheric songs inspired by the New Wave genre.A huge 80sstyle music comeback like this was bound to happen at some point or another, as other musicians like The Weeknd and Paramore embraced the New Wave, synth-inspired sound on recent albums. Even shows like “Stranger Things” or recent films like “It” have played with the aesthetic.

Does this nostalgic style fit in well with Mitski’s depressive blend of lyrical heartbreak? On paper, it should work very well, but in practice it does not. The main issue with most of the record was how the songs went through one ear and out the other.

On previous albums like “Bury Me at Makeout Creek,” Mitski cre-

ated infectious indie rock tunes that would stick in your head for the rest of your week. Her choruses were as heartbreaking as they were invigorating. “Laurel Hell” fails to get me actively interested in what is going on.

“Everyone” drones on for 4 minutes and leads to absolutely nowhere. Scratch that, it does lead to a nice piano line… in the last 20 seconds. Mitski’s vocal effort on the track also feels like she is about to fall asleep as soon as it ends. It is easily the worst song of the whole bunch.

On a more positive note, “The Only Heartbreaker” is a great upbeat dance song that feels like it’s straight out of the 80s. I love the lyrics too! The song is all about a person who makes mistakes in a relationship but is only making those mistakes because they are the only one trying.

The rest of the album is simply fine. Nothing really stuck with me, which is extremely disappointing.

Previous efforts from Mitski, like “Be the Cowboy” and “Bury Me at Makeout Creek” were rife with infectious riffs and choruses that will immediately get stuck in your head.

“Laurel Hell” is a bland, confusing effort from an otherwise exciting indie star. Could a few more listens change my mind? Absolutely.

However, after three listens, I am out.

Feb. 18, 2022 Nintendo announces flood of new games and expansions

Alex Ross A&E Section Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu Video game publisher and developer Nintendo held a “Nintendo Direct” presentation on the 9th, where they announced a plethora of new games and updates. In the 40-minute presentation, Nintendo announced a few new games, showcased more updates for projects already released, and revealed a new mode for one of their upcoming games.

The first trailer was a gameplay trailer for the announced “Fire Emblem Warriors” game, subtitled “Three Hopes.” This will be the second part in the “Warriors” games, a hack-and-slash spin-off of the main “Fire Emblem” series. Nintendo Switch fans should mark their calendars, as the trailer ends with a release date of June 24, 2022.

The next exciting announcement is “Mario Strikers: Battle League,” the third installment of the long dormant “Mario Strikers” spin-off series. This was a big surprise as the last entry was released in 2007 on the Nintendo Wii. The video game is a five versus five soccer game featuring characters from the Mario franchise. However, the game features chaotic and aggressive gameplay as players can tackle each other and use items, much like the “Mario Kart” series of games.

The planned release date is not too far away; June 22, 2022.

Throughout the Direct, Nintendo features a boatload of games being ported to the Nintendo Switch. This list features AAA games and inde-

pendent works like “No Man’s Sky,” “Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection,” “Portal: Companion Collection,” as well as “Zombie Army 4: Dead War.” “Kirby and the Forgotten Land” was another very exciting announcement, as 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of Kirby’s first released game. The trailer for the game featured gameplay as well as Kirby eating a car! The absurd trailer says more about the game than I could ever write, so please check it out. The game will be released next month on March 25, 2022, for the Nintendo Switch.

There was plenty more exciting news from the Direct, like “Mario Party 8” getting DLC of new racetracks, “Xenoblade Chronicles 3” finally being announced, and co-op gameplay of “Splatoon 3.”

Overall, Nintendo was able to condense a plethora of exciting gaming news within 40 minutes while also being able to provide something for every video game fan.

The week of Valentine’s Day called for a playlist with songs all about love and romance. Love deserves to be spread every day of the year instead of every 14th of February. Those who listen to the playlist can expect to feel affectionate.

1. “You You Belong with Me” Me by Taylor Swift This playlist about love required one of Swift’s songs. To sum up the song for those who haven’t listened, the girl’s best friend, Swift, is pleading to her best friend/ crush to break up with his girlfriend and be with her. I really appreciate the use of storytelling in the song.

2. “Warmness Warmness on the Soul” Soul by Avenged Sevenfold Soft heavy metal is the sound of this song.

The song is about the love between a man and his lover, said the vocalist of the band, Matthew Charles Sanders. The lyrics, “I give my heart to you, I give my heart cause’ nothing can compare in this world to you” is why this song was included in the playlist.

3. “Training Training Wheels” Wheels by Melanie Martinez One of the many love songs by Martinez had to make an appearance in this playlist. This song is about Martinez teaching her crush to not fear the feelings of love, shown in these lyrics “Scared to take them off, but they’re so worn down, promise I won’t push you straight to the dirt”. The lyrics “Training wheels” is a metaphor referring to wanting to progress in their relationship.

4. “The The Only Exception” Exception by Paramore Paramore is one of the few bands who can pull off multiple music genres, for example “The Only Exception” is a part of their softer sounds. The song is about finally finding hope that love exists after heartache with the lyrics “Darling you are the only exception and I’m on my way to believing.”

The essence of Valentine’s Day is true love.

A common misconception is that singles cannot celebrate this holiday, but love and affection can be expressed between friends and family. This article will include traditions that can become a part of daily life to keep the essence of Valentine’s Day alive.

Indoor picnic. The act of picnicking shouldn’t end when the warm weather turns cold; bring the picnic indoors! Sometimes the park can bring bad vibes, therefore indoor picnics can ease some anxiety within the comfort of your home. Furniture may have to be moved to place down a blanket, or you can bring it into the dining room. Picnics are a great way of showing your appreciation of others through making universally liked foods to enjoy together.

Bake a special treat. Baking is not for the weak, as it takes dedication and time to make a perfect, tasty treat. When browsing through the aisles of the grocery store, keep in mind the person you are baking for and their preferences. There is a significant difference between being gifted store-made food rather than homemade. Your significant other, family members or friends should graciously accept your homemade treats—unless they have severe allergies to what you made.

Create a personalized playlist. Anyone can send people music recommendations, but having a whole playlist dedicated to you is very sentimental and proves that you’re on their mind.

Music is universally enjoyed but every person has their own preferred music genres. The songs included on the playlist should remind you of that person. Make sure to include some of their favorite songs so they aren’t scared

to explore the rest of the songs listed. Playlists take time to make from exploring different songs and scrutinizing the other person’s music taste.

Regardless of how you choose to show your appreciation to your loved ones, make it special and keep the loving energy going no matter what day of the year it is!

A day in the life of a commuter Tess English Managing Editor tae7002@lockhaven.edu

Leaving home for college gives most students one of their first tastes of independence from parental supervision; most being the keyword. I’m Tess English, and I’m not one of the most. I live the #CommuterLife.

This means I live off-campus and drive a stint to get to LHU whenever I have classes.

The following story accounts for a generic day in my life.

I wake up early, not because I want to but because I have to get primed and ready to drive about 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic, to make it to school. I scan gas prices as I drive to school and question if it was really cheaper to live at home than to take out the student loans to live on campus. I roll up in one of the designated green permit parking areas; usually behind the PUB unless I’m gifted with special events reserved parking or parking fills up fast because of COVID-19 testing parking in the commuter lot. Not that COVID-19 testing isn’t important, but I’m unclear why I paid $40 to have half of the first lot constantly being full. I digress.

I head to the Bentley Starbucks before I go to class. There is a one and three chance the barista asks me if I’m using my flex. Spoiler Alert: I don’t have flex or a meal plan. This can throw off the occasional campus worker. This is by no means a complaint or inconvenience, just something rather odd I experience from an outsider’s perspective.

After class, I take lunch. I weigh the easy choice of trekking to Bently and ordering food. But, this brings us 1) a semi-expensive lunch choice because I am 2) not using my meal plan or my flex. Most days I take the other and typically less expensive choice

of hitting up local restaurants for lunch. I go to Arby’s because I have coupons and eating out on the regular is expensive. Shout to Arby’s and the semi-steady coupon flow. I’m happy to save money. Happy, but conflicted because I know these exact eating habits are why I’m probably breaking out. I could pack my lunch, but it’s more effort than it sounds. Instead of hoping I become the kind of person responsible enough to pack lunch, I hope I’m the kind of person who starts doing their skincare routine because my adult acne would still be bad regardless.

I go to a few more classes and then drive back home. I generally miss whatever late night campus event might be happening because of a 35-ish minute drive at night. I go to bed, sleep, and repeat this exciting routine the next day.

Cultivating love in a long-distance relationship Joel Robinson Staff Writer jmr4508@lockhaven.edu “Love has no bonds” is an old saying that I believe to be true. I am in a long distance relationship with my amazing girlfriend Kendyll. Some of you reading this may be in a long distant relationship as well.

Here are a few tips and tricks me and Kendyll have used to keep our relationship strong and thriving.

Clear communication. Communicating is a huge part of any relationship. It’s important to make sure that goals, desires, needs, and in many cases boundaries are all laid out on the table. Check up on each other and make sure that your partner’s needs are being taken care of, because lack of communication will kill any relationship. Be willing to be open and honest but also listen and hear what your partner is saying.

Be deliberate about setting time aside for your significant other. Here’s the reality of a long distance relationship: you both have “separate lives” in a sense. Both of you are doing different things throughout the day or evening, so it’s very important to make time for each other. This becomes especially important when the two of you are in different time zones. Some days it might be a 10 minute phone call, others it might be a three to four hour date night.

Spending that quality time with each other even though it’s over the phone is important to the health of the relationship.

Be mindful of the content of your conversations.

The reality is, if you want to see continued growth in the relationship you have to have deeper conversations, and for a long distance relationship that means probably over phone call or facetime. I encourage people who do long distance to have those deeper conversations early in the relationship because you should find out early if it’s going to work out. Find out what their values are, what makes them who they are. What are their goals in life? Where do they want to live? Get to know as much as you can about them. Be sure to balance the deeper conversations with some light hearted fun conversations as well.

Do something fun! There are so many great resources you can use to play games and watch movies or videos together. Frequent movie nights are a fun way to spend time together and you will also begin to form inside jokes and quotable lines together. You can watch streaming services such as Disney+, Hulu and Netflix together. Another great source of entertainment are the many online games you can play together. Chess, truth or dare, Roblox, minecraft, checkers, and the list goes on. Make a date night out of it!

Love takes work, but hopefully by putting into practice these tips and tricks you can continue to grow in your relationship with each other. Don’t let distance be a hindrance for your relationship. No matter how great a distance there is, there are ways to connect with each other and get to know each other on a deeper level to develop your relationship.

There’s no one quite as devoted to anything in their lives as sports fans of all kinds are dedicated to their favorite teams and players. However, what line lies between what is intended to be an innocent interest and outright cultish behavior between fans and their team of choice?

In truth, the infamous stereotype surrounding sports fans and how they behave is pretty rooted in reality. They’re loud, they’re proud, and they’re committed heavily to the team they’re rooting for.

Though having pride in a team—and, subsequently, the town or state they represent—is a good thing, their behavior can very quickly breach into negativity.

The current pandemic has shown how sports fans can behave when brought to the extreme, outraged because of the inability to see their team play in person due to COVID-19 restrictions. There’s not only been protests in person but on multiple social media websites, whether it be on the national, regional, or school level—and in many cases, such as Lock Haven University limiting spectators for their games, facilities have been forced to reverse those changes as a result of the backlash.

It’s ridiculous to behave this way, at the end of the day. After all, the whole purpose of these restrictions in the first place is to protect both spectators and players from contracting the virus. Having to watch your favorite team on TV or read about them in the newspaper for a little while seems like a small sacrifice in exchange for the safety of both yourself and the people around you. Regardless, many sports fans don’t appear to see it that way—or at the very least, the minority in this instance is a very vocal one.

Is seeing your favorite player throw a ball in person worth the potential danger it could bring? Is the outrage a necessary response to these situations?

Personally, I don’t see the point. The sooner we comply with social distancing and allow ample opportunity for the pandemic to diminish, the sooner sports fanatics can return to watching their favorite jocks scoring that touchdown in person worry-free.

Goodbye Warped Tour and welcome When We Were Young 2022. The music festival will take place October 22, 23 and 29 at the Las Vegas Festival Ground. This three day, one-hour festival features a total of 65 beloved emo and rock bands. Paramore and My Chemical Romance are the headliners for the event. In this article I will be discussing my thoughts on the festival.

As a person who enjoys emo and rock music, this festival at first sounded too good to be true, not possible I could experience all my favorite bands performing in one place.

Two emo gods like Paramore and My Chemical Romance headlining…take my money.

However, after researching more about the event, I am skeptical on if it is truly worth the $244.99 general admission ticket.

One of the big questions I have is how someone can try to experience all 65 bands

performing on three stages. Several bands will be performing at the same time making it hard to get your money worth due to varying set times. There is a policy of no refunds on all form of tickets. Live Nation Entertainment who is the festival’s organizer also was the organizer of the Astroworld’s music festival where 10 people died and hundreds injured. Also, festivals aren’t an ideal place to be with the coronavirus is still being very active and growing in numbers of cases.

The information included in my article about the festival makes me ponder if the When We Were Young 2022 festival is worth attending. I will gladly view various videos fans post on social media of the performances during the event from the comfort of my home. Also, my bank account will be thanking me for not spending the $244.99

Men’s Basketball notches fifth win in a row on the road versus Bloomsburg Adam Kaylor Communications Assistant

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – When it mattered most, the Lock Haven University men’s basketball team (11-12, 8-11 PSAC) came up with some crucial defensive plays to topple Bloomsburg University (5-18, 4-15 PSAC) 8579 in an important Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup which held serious playoff implications for both teams.

The Bald Eagles and Huskies both got off to strong starts and the opening ten minutes reflected the intensity of the game. With 12 minutes to play in the opening half, the two sides were locked at 18-18, but DaQuan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) and MarkAnthony Fidelis (Largo, Md./DeMatha) began to catch fire and helped the Bald Eagles build up a 44-38 lead going into the break.

Granberry poured in 17 points in the opening half, and was matched by Fidelis who knocked in 15 firsthalf points. Both players shot a strong 60 percent from the floor to help LHU claw out a six-point lead.

The Bald Eagles built up their largest lead of nine points early in the second half, but Bloomsburg responded and chipped away at the lead before eventually taking a 67-65 lead with just six minutes to play.

The teams continued to trade leads in the final minutes, before a five-point solo burst from Eli Washington (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) pushed The Haven out to a 79-75 advantage with four minutes to play.

The Huskies fired back to draw within one point at 79-78 with just two minutes to play. Both sides were locked in defensively in the final two minutes until Fidelis got to the line with 35 seconds to play. The Bald Eagle guard sunk both shots to edge LHU ahead 81-78.

After a Bloomsburg free throw, Granberry went to the line and knocked down both shots to give LHU the decisive 82-78 lead. Following yet another defensive stop, Fidelis made a pair from the stripe and the Bald Eagles

brought home the all-important PSAC victory over the Huskies 85-79.

The win gives the Bald Eagles a crucial boost in its playoff push, and extends The Haven’s winning streak to five games, which is LHU’s longest since the 2015-16 season.

Granberry and Fidelis led four Bald Eagles in double figures and each contributed 22 points apiece. Both finished an identical 7-14 from the field as the duo racked up the points on an efficient night for LHU. Jesse McPherson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Eli Washington (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) also notched 14 points on 6-10 from the field.

As a team, LHU shot an impressive 47 percent from the field including 44 percent from beyond the arc.

The Bald Eagles enforced their will in the paint and held a commanding 40-18 lead in points in the paint, and also blocked five Bloomsburg shots.

Russian skater allowed to compete despite failed drug test Levi Deitz Opinion Editor lwd6497@lockhaven.edu

The Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) ruled on Monday that 15-year-old Russian figure skater KamilaValieva would be allowed to compete in the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Valieva tested positive for trimetazidine, a heart drug, on December 25, but the result did not come to light until last week. The test results came to light after she had helped the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) win gold.

She was immediately suspended by the Russian anti-doping agency, RUSADA, but the ban was lifted a day later. The lift was appealed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and a trial was scheduled where Valieva testified via video.

Valieva is considered a “protected person” due to her being a minor, which is under 16 at

the Olympics. According to AP News, athletes under 16 have more rights under anti-doping rules and are generally not held responsible for taking banned substances. This means that the focus of Valieva’s investigation will be on her doctors and coaches. The investigation will be separately done by RUSADA, but any ruling will be able to be appealed by the World AntiDoping Agency (WADA).

The decision to let Valieva compete was met with much controversy and backlash. Sarah Hirschland, CEO of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, said the organization was "disappointed by the message this decision sends.” Regarding the decision to let Valieva compete, the CAS wrote “In particular, the Panel considered that preventing the Athlete from competing at the Olympic Games would cause her irreparable harm in these circumstances.” The ruling allows Valieva to compete in the women’s individual competition, in which she is favored to win gold.

The situation has drawn comparisons to that of Sha’Carri Richardson, who took to twitter following theCAS’s decision. In a tweet, she wrote, “Can we get a solid answer on the difference of her situation andmines? My mother died and I can’t run and was also favored to place top 3. The only difference I see is “I’m a black young lady.” Richardson tested positive for THC last summer and was denied from competing in the 2020 Summer Olympics. According to NPR, both substances are prohibited

by WADA, however only trimetazidine can improve athletic performance.

The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in Sunday night’s showdown in superbowl 56. The game featured the best teams from the AFC and NFC. The Rams quarterbacked by Matthew Stafford started with the ball but were unable to score on their first drive. The Bengals quarterbacked by Joe Burrow were also unable to score on their first possession.

The first score of the game came on the Rams second possession with a 17 yd touchdown pass from Stafford to Odel Beckham Jr. (7-0) The second score came with a Bengals 29 yd field goal from Evan McPherson (7-3).

In the second quarter the Rams score on a passing play from Stafford to Cooper Kupp. (Two point conversion failed) (13-3) The Bengals would then march down the field and score on a 6 yd touchdown pass from running back Joe Mixon to Tee Higgins (13-10). On the first play of the third quarter Joe Burrows threw a 75 yard touchdown pass to Tee Higgins (13-17).

This followed up by a 38 yard field goal on the bengals next drive (13-20) Before the

end of the third quarter the Rams would also score a Matt Gay 41 yd field goal. (16-20) In the final 5 minutes of the fourth quarter Stafford led the Rams down the field to score a touchdown with a minute and twenty seconds left (23-20) Which would hold on to win them the game.

Looking back at my prediction of the game the score I predicted was 28-23 in the Bengals favor. Obviously the bengals did not win however the score was very close.

Some things that shocked me about the game were the fact neither team scored on their first drive. And also how closely the overall stats were.

The Rams had 313 total yards of offense and the Bengals had 305. And possession of the ball was split almost equally with the Rams having 30:47 in time of possession and the Bengals having 29:13. In conclusion this was a game that came down to the final 5 minutes and it was very evenly battled out between the two teams.
