Veterans Awareness Month: LHU host first Veteran expo Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu LHU is hosting the first Veterans Expo on Friday, Nov. 13 from 10-3 P.M. in the Rec center to support and honor local veterans and their families by providing them with resources.

Veterans day is held every year on Nov. 11 to celebrate the ending of World War 1 on the 11th hour of the 11th day on the 11th month in 1918.

In honor of Veteran’s day, the LHU Veteran’s Advisory Group wanted to do something to honor veterans on campus and in the community. The Clinton County PA Department of Veterans Affairs does an annual expo in June and the Veteran’s Advisory Group here at LHU thought it would be a good idea to also host one near Veteran’s Day. Kristin Vincenzes, assistant professor and Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program Director, said “After the group decided to have an Expo I volunteered to coordinate the Expo with the amazing help of Kellie Forziate.” Forziate is a graduate student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program specializing in Military, Veterans and their families.

There are many different reasons why the event is being held, it isn’t just to support our local veterans. It is also to provide resources for the veterans and their families because a lot of information that they need isn’t easily found.

The community is also very important to the purpose of this event. They want to get the community more involved in supporting the veterans and their families.

At the expo, there will be a place set up for anyone attending to sign Christmas cards or just write a simple thank you note that will be given to local veterans in

nursing homes. Attendees will also be able to sign up for Team Red White and Blue, which is a group of people who encourage veterans and community members to work together to support veterans. A local veteran will also be recognized at the expo at around 11 A.M. There will be at least 26 vendors in attendance at the expo including, counseling centers, VA medical centers, VFW benefit center, Canine Partners for Life, Clinton County Women’s center and many more. Also, at the top of every hour during the expo, free t-shirts will be given away.

The expo isn’t the only thing LHU is doing to honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces. During the whole month of November, veterans only need their military ID for free admission to any of the LHU sporting events. Along with that, on Wednesday there was a Veterans Day Celebration at the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center and on Thursday Nov. 19 there will be an overview of Military education benefits at 2 P.M. in the PUB. Anyone is welcomed to the event and be able to see all the different benefits that are available to Veterans and their dependents. The community is encouraged to get involved in supporting the veterans there are plenty of different ways to get involved.

Vincenzes said “Another tremendous support was the Clinton County Veterans Affairs Office because they have guided us in hosting the expo. It full has been a team effort.”

Be sure to stop by the Rec on Friday, Nov. 13 from 10 - 3 P.M. to support and honor the local veterans.

Legislative leaders lay groundwork for budget deal Joanna Harlow Online Editor ejh1498@lhup.edu After 19 weeks of heated negotiations, lawmakers appear to be on their way to a budget agreement. Gov. Tom Wolf and legislative leaders of both parties announced agreement late Tuesday on framework for a broad budget package which would end the five-month stalemate, possibly before the Thanksgiving holiday. Democrats and Republicans will have to make concessions. The framework is only a precursor to the actual budget agreement.

Gov. Tom Wolf’s campaign promise: to bring $350 million in new money to the state’s school systems will be part of the proposal. The Associated Press’ Marc Levy reports that negotiators want to send $600 million in gambling revenues to the state treasury. School districts receive these revenues, which are then passed on to homeowners as tax breaks. The framework puts off consideration of any expanded gambling revenue until next year The compromise includes a tax increase, but only piece of the multi-billion dollar increase that Wolf first proposed. The GOP leaders are willing to let the state sales tax go up 1.25 to 7.25 percent, according to Politics PA.

A key issue of the negotiations has been liquor privatization, and it is expected to be part of the final budget. The issue, however, has not been part of the most recent round of negotiations, and details on the liquor privatization plan and distribution of new revenue remain to be worked out. The GOP leaders are also pushing for pension reform as the bargaining continues.

Gov. Tom Wolf is also expected to cede on a very important piece of his running platform: the natural gas severance tax. The issue has been a sticking point in negotiations.

“We sit on one of the largest natural gas deposits in the world. We have the natural resources to actually do something about the problem here. A severance tax on that resource would be something that’s really appropriate. How radical would that be?

Well, Texas does it; Oklahoma does it; North Dakota does it; Alaska, Louisiana, they do it, and West Virginia does it,” Gov. Wolf told the Post-Gazette in Feb. The most recent reports show that the tax will most likely not be part of the budget.

On Friday, House Majority Leader Dave Reed told his Republican colleagues the progress could lead to a budget agreement by thanksgiving.

November 12, 2015 10/30/15 Susquehanna Ave Law enforcement agency received a bolo reported on October 29, 2015 from Lycoming county to be on the look out for a chevy impala. Trolley driver reported seeing a vehicle matching the description.

Officer contacted Clinton county communication to see if bolo is still activate. Lycoming county found suspected vehicle and canceled bolo.

10/30/15 Off Campus Officer on patrol observed an individual in the bed of truck sitting on top of a tool box. Officer stopped vehicle and advised driver that his passenger needs to be down in bed of the truck and traveling over 35 mph. Officer gave verbal warning to driver and passenger of vehicle.

10/30/15 N Fairview St Officer observed four males walking down middle of street. Officer confronted males asking why they were walking in the middle of the roadway during the conversation officer detected marijuana. Search of person ended in negative results for contraband.

Another male individual was verbally aggressive during the stop, this male was also searched due to the odor of marijuana and blood shot eyes. Search ended in negative results. All individuals warned about being under the influence of narcotics in public.

10/31/15 Fairview Suites Report of a male sleeping in a lobby chair. Officer responded to location and found male. Officer woke him up and found him to be of legal age of consumption and male stated he was visiting his brother. Male also had a bottle of vodka on him.

Male instructed to dispose of the alcohol in the presence of this officer since the campus is a dry campus.

Officer confronted and male admitted being under the influence of marijuana. Search of person and bookbag conducted. Contraband found and seized. Charges filed on possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

11/2/15 Bellefonte Ave Officer observed a vehicle traveling without headlights on. Traffic stop and individual driving vehicle found to be driving without a driver’s license. Individual cited for driving without a

11/3/15 N Fairview St Traffic stop on vehicle observed traveling at approximately 55 mph in a 25 mph zone and almost strucking a student crossing in the pedestrian crosswalk. Driving issued a traffic citation for driving vehicle at a safe speed.

11/3/15 North Hall Officers dispatched to speak to rd regarding narcotics. Rd observed three females smoking marijuana. Officers interviewed the females and found the marijuana was purchased early from a male in McEntire hall. Officers investigated the allegations, and found drug paraphernalia and seized all items. During investigation officer found male individuals to be selling the marijuana. Male individuals taken into custody and transported to Clinton county corrections facility for booking and preliminary arraignment.

11/4/15 Campus Village Medical call-male had a bad cut on bridge of his nose. Male believed he hyperventilated causing him to black out and fall onto the floor. Refused medical attention.

11/5/15 Sloan Report of vector business cards left on desk’s throughout building. No witnesses at this time to the person/persons placing the business cards throughout the building. Investigation into the matter will continue. Anyone having additional information should contact public safety at 570484-2278.

Havenscope is making ‘Deadline’ with an all-student cast Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu The student-run television club on campus, Havenscope, is producing a film which students can participate to get real filmmaking experience that only comes around every once in awhile.

“Deadline” is a fictional mystery/suspense film that takes place on a college campus, following Chris Armstrong, a journalist for the local newspaper, who encounters a murder on campus. As he begins to write about the murder, he discovers more information about the circumstances behind it, putting him in more danger.

There are four other lead characters in the film. Jennifer Saunders the girlfriend of the murdered victim, Shaun Bailey; she is shy, reserved, but passionate. Shannon is one of Chris’s good friends and she is out-going and friendly. Carly is the ex-girlfriend of the murdered victim Shaun, she is caring and open. Lastly, Detective Olsen, the officer evaluating the death of Shaun, is authoritative and intimidating.

Brandon Clements, a sophomore studying communication and the

director of “Deadline,” said “This will be a 100 percent realistic film-making experience for anyone that will be participating. It should be really fun and I am looking forward to working with the cast and crew!”

Auditions for the film are on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in Sloan 321.

Anyone is allowed to audition and will be provided with excerpts from the script for each role, so there is no need to prepare anything before hand. Ramona Broomer, assistant professor in the visual and performing arts department is giving extra credit to any of her students who participate in the production of the film.

For students with production experience, or are just looking for something to do they are still in need of a gaffer (lighting coordinator) and a props master along with, the three female and two male lead roles.

Filming is expected to start in January of 2016 and to be finished before the end of the spring semester in order to have a public viewing in Price Auditorium.

Clements said, “This is an experience that only comes around every few years so take the opportunity now.”

Fall book talk: Let’s talk ‘Crave’ with Laurie Cannady Sam Shirk A&E Editor sxs1090@lhup.edu Lock Haven University English professor, Laurie Cannady spoke in the Alumni Durrwatcher Building on Tuesday about her newest published book “Crave: Sojourn of a Hungry Soul.” Cannady was a pillar of beauty and strength as she talked about her newest memoir.

Released Tuesday for everyone to read, LHU scheduled a Fall book talk for Cannady’s newest memoir piece. Cannady herself looked beautiful in her elegant dress and she greeted everyone with a warm smile and thanked everyone for coming.

Bill Schneider, the managing editor for Etruscan Press, feels “Crave” should really be called “’Brave’ because it’s a story about bravery.” This explains a lot when it comes to Cannady, whose bravery and strength has affected her students on a very deep and personal level.

The event was an emotional but joyous one for Cannady who shed some tears and some very personal messages, allowing the audience to learn a lot about such a wonderful professor.

At the beginning of the event, Cannady talked about how this was a tough story for her to write because she had to consider her family’s feelings since

she was sharing a lot of their secrets. After making her decision, she told the audience why she decided to share such a personal story like this one.

“I made the decision to tell this story because I didn’t want what happened to me, my mother, my grandmother - I did not want it to happen to another generation and I felt like if I wrote this story, then there would be evidence of us,” she said.

After a beautiful book trailer, Cannady read three pieces from the memoir itself. There was deep emotion in her voice as she read the words in each part. The way she read was captivating and it was obvious that she made her audience want to hear more.

April Line, a grant writer for Etruscan Press, according to their website, described her opinion of the book. She feels that “Crave: Sojourn of a Hungry Soul” is a beautiful, lyrical novel and just as beautiful as you would think when hearing the title.

“Crave” is quickly becoming a very big success.

The memoir has already broken the record for most advanced sales for Etruscan Press and it has garnered a very positive response from others who have read it.

Tim Seibles, author of “Fast Animal” describes the book as ‘both intimate and epic’ and Sue Silverman, author of “The Pat Boone Fan Club” describes the book as ‘a deeply affecting debut memoir.’

“Crave: Sojourn of a Hungry Soul” is available now wherever books are sold.

‘Get Together:’ Take a fresh, new look at ‘Sims 4’ Michael Eubanks Staff Writer mae7020@lhup.edu “The Sims 4” released in Sept. 2014 to mixed reactions from fans of the series. While the newest iteration of the long-running franchise had some innovations, detractors felt the game was rushed through production and that features from past versions were not included in the current release.

For those who are uninitiated, “The Sims” franchise is billed as a life simulation game. The player controls simulated computer people, the Sims, for which the franchise is named. The Sims inhabit a world much like our own but filtered through the quirky humor of developer Maxis. Like most simulation titles, there is no set goal to the game. Players have a great deal of freedom which allows for a variety of play styles.

In anticipation of “The Sims 4’s” approaching second expansion pack, “Get Together,” this review attempts to take a fresh look at “The Sims 4” and to judge it on its own merits apart from the controversies surrounding its release.

Given a fair chance, the game is fun and will appeal to fans of the genre who may have initially given the game a pass due to mixed reviews. The game contains some innovations, but they are often incremental improvements from past games and won’t alter the gameplay enough to convert anyone who does not already enjoy the series.

While the scope of this review does not allow the space to address specific features, the developer has introduced many new features and bug fixes as free updates. A substantial amount of content has also been released as purchasable downloadable content. New to “The Sims 4” are game packs, which are similar to full sized expansions, but provide more tightly focused content.

The lack of content that concerned gamers at release is being addressed.

“The Sims 4” is not an identical experience to the previous games, but it is familiar enough to capture the appeal of its predecessors. By the same token, there is not enough innovation to expand that appeal to new audiences. The product has improved substantially over its state at release and is worth a fresh look for fans who may have been dissuaded by the initial reviews.

Amazing kid cartoons that appeal to adults too Kathleen Ellison Editor-in-Chief kae742@lhup.edu I love cartoons. I’m not talking humorous adult cartoons like “Bob’s Burgers” or “Rick and Morty” (although I love those too), I’m talking about “kids” cartoons like “Adventure Time”. There are so many amazing cartoons today that are on a whole new level than any other cartoon of the past. They often appeal to not only kids, but adults as well.

I’ve talked before about this, but now I’m gonna tell you about some amazing cartoons you should watch now because these amazing shows deserve support, and, by watching a show or movie, you as consumer say you want more of it.

“Over the Garden Wall” I won’t dwell on this too long since I’ve written a review about this show, but this award winning show is well worth a watch. “Over the Garden Wall” contains some of the most beautiful artwork I’ve seen in a cartoon, impressive voice acting, lovely music and a grim yet fanciful plot.

“Steven Universe” Join the crystal gems in saving Earth from evil beings!

This deserves your support simply because of the amazing representation in it. The show not only contains a diverse cast, which is mostly women. Even more impressive is how unique each female character looks, from short and slightly chubby to tall and muscular. The show also contains space lesbians.

“Bee and Puppycat” This show is actually a YouTube series, and is about an unemployed young women who goes with a mysterious creature on space adventures which are temp jobs to pay rent. What I really like about it is Bee is a young woman in her twenties who’s unsure about what she wants to do, which I can relate too. Plus Puppycat is adorable.

“Gravity Falls” Join twins, Dipper and Mabel, as they explore the mysteries of Gravity Falls with their great uncle Grunkle Stan! What’s amazing about this show is the endless puzzles and mysteries for the audience. The show is filled with hidden codes, secret messages that you have to play backwards or tiny clues. It also has tons of references to movies, games and shows.

Michael Kimmel brings ‘Guyland’ to campus Joanna Harlow Online Editor ejh1498@lhup.edu Dr. Michael Kimmel spoke on Wed. night about his book “Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men.” LHU students Diosanny Rivera, Meghan Mausteller and Felicia Baker asked the author to give a lecture after attending the PASSHE Undergraduate Women’s Leadership Institute. Kimmel is a researcher and writer who studies the issue of excessive or toxic masculinity in our modern world. The book navigates the world surrounding young men in our society.

Kimmel considers himself a “pro-feminist man” and his work is as much about violations to women’s rights as it is about the culture of masculinity.

His research centers on the origins of attitudes detrimental to women’s rights and our society as a whole. In his lecture, Kimmel focussed on “fratculture,” and “hook-up culture,” which foster sexist attitudes on college campuses. Kimmel described his journalistic research into these cultures and the young men and women he met.

Kimmel found that while the rituals involved in “frat-culture” did not always affect women directly, but they did promote hierarchical thinking which inevitably leads to abuse. The “orgasm gap,” a tongue in cheek concept

for many, was exposed by Kimmel as another example of the problems with the male culture on college campuses, where women view sex as a sort of duty to boys who feel entitled to it and use women to climb a social ladder which includes only other males. Kimmel said that he is not an opponent of fraternities and would not like to see them abolished from college campuses.

The problem, he says, lies deeper in our culture.

The way in which children are raised and socialized into an unhealthy masculine culture was also discussed. Kimmel described the change in the family model since the Victorian era and the way that masculine ideology has evolved. His buzzword “adultolescence” describes the slow progress that college graduates make into adulthood. The economic strains of today’s world might be to blame for the trend of adults who act more like children and do not recognise the scope of their societal influence.

Kimmel’s goal is to make oppression more visible and address entitlement in the male community. The example that Kimmel gave illustrating this entitlement is a familiar quote: a man says “I can’t believe that black woman got my job.” We can assume that the operative word “my” is the root cause of the apparent racism/sexism in his statement. Why would the job have been his to begin with if they were interviewing for the same position?

Where in the World: Brasilia, Brazil Raymond Stellhorn Columnist rjs2091@lhup.edu

The capital of Brazil today is the city of Brasilia and has been since 1960, prior to then it was Rio de Janeiro. It was nothing more than a rural village before being designated as the new location of the capital city, but, after five years of construction and development, the city was complete. It became the new home to Brazil’s government, fulfilling a plan that was written out in the constitution many years before.

Unique to Brasilia is the city plan and architecture. Since it was built basically from nothing, the designers could do almost anything the imagined. From above, the city looks like an airplane, which is organized by two wings divided by a central mall known as the “monumental axis” similar to the one in Washington D.C. and then separated into different districts which include: Federal District and City Government Buildings, Brazil’s Government Branch Buildings, Museums, Hotels, Shopping, Sports and Residential. Keep in mind since the city was designed in the 1950’s and meant to look futuristic; it has a very similar look to how television shows at that time such as Star Trek portrayed the future. The majority of

the structures were designed by chief architect and Brazilian born, Oscar Niemeyer, which is another reason many of the buildings look similar and uniformly futuristic.

The most famous attractions in Brasilia are located in the Monumental Axis which include: Three Powers Square (Location of Congress, Supreme Court, and Presidential Palace), Television Tower (Panoramic view of the city from the top), National Theatre Claudio Santoro, Public Works of Art, Alvarado Palace, Cultural Complex of the Republic and the Cathedral of Brasilia. Elsewhere in Brasilia one can visit the Paranoá Lake, a beautiful large artificial lake for watersports and the location of the astonishing Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, another piece of iconic architecture and design associated with Brasilia. Also, the Mané Garrincha National Stadium recently built for the Soccer World Cup hosted in Brazil is the largest facility in Brasilia and hosts soccer matches as well as concerts.

This futuristic city has much to offer with unique architecture and design, a cultural center of Brazil, and numerous tourist destinations. This is a city one cannot miss when discovering Brazil.

Poop on Procrastination: Time management is key Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu The end of the semester is closer than you think. Or maybe you’re all too aware of how soon the semester ends whether it be because you’re counting down the days until you’re free or you’re freaking out about how much you still have to do.

However you’re counting down to the end of the semester, time management is key for these last few weeks.

Stay on top of your assignments To do this, you need to know what they are. If you don’t already, keep a planner full of due dates. To go even further, make daily to-do lists of certain assignments you need to get done that day like do a reading, start research for a paper, study a certain topic, get that homework assignment done. Split up your week by days so you don’t overwhelm yourself with things to do. Do a little at a time and make sure

you have a plan of when to do it. When you make these lists, make sure you stick to them.

Create time blocks We all have those blocks of time throughout the day that we do nothing at all. I like naps and reading for fun but to stay on top of everything, I need to use that “fun time” for “work time.” Stay awake and don’t procrastinate. Just say no to the couch, your bed and turning on the tv. It’s only for a little while longer, you can do it.

Get enough sleep Some people think sleeping less means they get more done but if you don’t sleep enough, you’re more prone to naps and low quality work. Keep your energy up and get your work done properly.

Stay on task Distractions are everywhere and we have short attention spans.

Close the door to keep your roommates from distracting you, turn off the music, and use the Forrest app to keep you off

your phone. Don’t stop once you’ve started a task and you’ll get it done a lot faster.

Set time limits Working for long periods of time is taxing on us so set a time limit. If a task is short, just work until it’s complete. If it’s a longer project, like an essay or a report, work on it for two or three hours, however long you think you can handle without screaming, then take a break. Then give yourself a time limit for a break, not as long as a big task but long enough to keep you sane.

Use your weekends No one wants to work on the weekend when we just killed ourselves all week but it has to be done. Let yourself sleep in, have your breakfast (or lunch, depending on when you wake up) then do a few tasks for a couple hours then enjoy your late afternoon and night. If you get enough done, you can have Sunday’s off as a reward for your super time management skills.

These seem like really simple tips that you probably already know but most of us don’t implement them. Finals are coming upon us and some of us need to start studying now and getting our final assignments done. Remember these tips and force yourself to follow them for the next few weeks and the end of the semester won’t make you want to cry as much.

Schedule your worries away with advice from a senior Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu As a duel-majoring senior that went abroad who is also an athlete, I’ve had my share of scheduling woes.

Scheduling is always stressful for me and now that I’m so close to graduating, albeit a semester late, I’ve never worried more. Here are some tips for underclassmen to help you with scheduling so your senior year might be a little less stressful.

Take your core classes first

It’s tempting to take 100 level gen-ed courses your first couple of semesters because they’re generally easier but don’t load up on them every semester. If you have a declared major, focus on those classes. Use your gen-eds to lighten the load of your schedules. You’re going to want an easy class every once in awhile.

Your classes only get harder and taking 15-18 credits of hard classes is sometimes just too much. Save your easy classes for when you need them most.

Take advantage of summer and winter classes.

If you have the time and the extra money to take these classes, do so.

I’ve been taking two to three summer classes every year and I’m still a semester behind (I also have two majors) but if you have one major, you might just graduate early, yay!

Summer and winter sessions are another place to take your gen-eds.

They’re more commonly offered in the summer online and easy to take.

Once you get down to your major classes, these are not as commonly offered. You’re downright lucky if they’re offered in the summer or winter.

If you have conflicting class times, always go

with the more difficult to get into class.

Getting into some classes is harder than others. They don’t have as many sections and they’re in demand for your major. Take the harder to get into classes first to ensure that you get in early and not stressing to get in your senior year.

If you don’t get into a class, don’t freak out.

Email the professor. There’s a chance they may let you squeeze into the class. Don’t be afraid to email them; the worse they can say is no.

Be aware of when classes are offered.

Some classes are only offered once every three semesters or even less frequently than that. If one of you major classes is like this, you have to be aware of when they’re offered so you can take it. If you miss taking the class, you may reach graduation before it’s offered again and then you

have a problem. Ask your advisor about these kinds of classes.

Don’t be afraid of 18 credits.

Eighteen credits sounds intimidating and it’s not that easy but sometimes it’s necessary. If you take eighteen, I promise that you’ll survive. If you’re an athlete, only take eighteen if you’re out of season; you’re in for a rough ride if you take it in season, unless you’re freakishly good at time management and keeping your tears at bay.

Just be aware of your graduation date and the classes you have to take before that. Try to spread out your semester loads as much as possible and don’t overwhelm yourself with tons of hard classes.

Work with your advisors and reach out to upperclassmen for help if you need it and scheduling shouldn’t be a problem. Good luck!

Study Abroad Stories: Rabat, Morocco Miranda Miaris Guest Writer mrm8725@lhup.edu During my study abroad experience to Rabat Morocco, we bid adieu from the city for 10 days and 9 nights.

When the 12-hour bus ride finally came to a roaring halt at some 1,200 miles up, we knew we had arrived in Tighfest.

Tighfest is a tiny indigenous mountain village in the north of Morocco. As expected, the people of Tighfest were relatively timid with interacting with a bus load of city kids and a handful of western women like myself.

In order to break the ice, I ran to my luggage and grabbed 150 markers and a full coloring book of mandalas. The children of Tighfest were thrilled to play and color with my fellow Institute of Leadership and Communication Leaders and I. Throughout our journey, our living conditions were relatively scarce. Our group was separated in groups of 2 and 4 and dispersed into the small homes of the people of the village. Our mission was to better their current living situation and embrace the enculturation of their methods and pastoral ways of living.

The greatest impact was the joy we brought to the children of Tighfest. We played games, built tire swings, played field games and even taught them simple and efficient hygiene methods like salt water mouthwash.

During the first two or three days of living in Tighfest, rural life began to weigh on us. While living in the mountains, we struggled with limited water supplies, scarce showering privileges and crowded living spaces.

Many of my team members began to feel lethargic and felt that going home early was the best bet.

As our 10-day stay came to an end, our teams attitude made a complete 360. As leaders, we truly changed the lives of the people of Tighfest for the better. We brought happiness, toys, excitement, compassion and help to these wonderful people. Not only did we teach them lessons, but they also taught us a very valuable lesson. Our trip to Tighfest truly humbled us. As our bus departed, there wasn’t a dry eye to be seen. This trip not only changed the people of Tighfest’s lives, but it changed ours too.

Throughout this past year, I have had the opportunity to serve as a member of Lock Haven University’s Panhellenic Council, which is essentially the governing body of the 4 National Panhellenic Conference sororities we have on campus: Alpha Sigma Tau, Sigma Kappa, Zeta Tau Alpha and Sigma Sigma Sigma.

From the moment I joined my organization, I knew that being a part of a sorority would be a life-changing experience, serving as a member of Panhel has only proven that.

People say sorority women are catty and superficial, but that statement couldn’t be further from the truth.

I have seen the women of the 4 sororities demonstrate so much love, support and acceptance towards one another, more so than even some blood-related family members.

I have seen members drive their sorority sisters to the hospital, I have seen sisters create posters for one member’s dance concert, I have seen members share the intimate personal details of their life to one another, I have seen whole organizations come together for the sake of one charity and I have seen members that go above and beyond what is expected of friendship and cross more into family.

People always ask me why I decided to join a sorority in the first place and these scenarios are the reason why.

I know that each and every single girl in my organization, and even the girls in the other organizations, will all have my back no matter what.

I know the women I surround myself with are my second family and my second home.

I know they will pick me up when I’ve hit rock bottom and I know they’ll cheer me on during my times of success.

Joining a sorority was a defining moment in my life and I will never regret it.

And yes, I recognize that this kind of support system can come from different organizations, whether it be clubs or teams, but those types of organizations don’t have the negative stigmas attached to them that Greek Life does.

The people in those organizations aren’t automatically judged whenever they tell someone what they belong to. The people in those organizations don’t have to answer ridiculous questions about the ethics or actions of their organization or how they’re “paying for their friends”.

Greek Life is not for everyone, just like sports aren’t for everyone, but that doesn’t mean that those who join Greek organizations are any different than those who choose to join a sports team.

Starbucks Christmas cup controversy Nicole Creamer Staff Writer nac8638@lhup.edu Last week, I wrote an article about Christmas coming earlier and earlier every year. My point was that Thanksgiving comes first yet stores and some people tend to ignore it. This article can be considered a part two of the last.

If you know me, you know that I practically live in Starbucks. I get coffee once maybe twice a day. Yes, I am a coffee addict, but that’s besides the point.

Reasons I love Starbucks, besides the drinks, include the music (sometimes), the relaxing setting, the big windows that shine natural light into the seating area and the workers. I used to do every bit of my homework in there.

I would sit there for hours, doing work and talking to my friends that happened to walk in.

Though, I have to point out one thing that happens every year as soon as November arrives, the red cups come out.

Like my article last week, I don’t like how some companies decide to go all holiday mode on us before December. However, people have been getting so angry at Starbucks lately because of their cups.

First of all, the Starbucks holiday cups are supposed to signify the coming of the holidays. It’s not supposed to be a big ordeal. All they are doing is changing the cups from white to red. Yet, people are pissed about it.

Secondly, I have read from multiple sources that the reason the cups are so simple this year and not as decorated as the previous years is because the CEO of Starbucks thought people would want to decorate their own cups like many people have done with the white Starbucks cups.

Somehow a simplistic red cup has created controversy as to whether Starbucks hates Christmas or not. Last I checked red is a Christmas color.

Also, I feel like the simple red cup is getting away from strictly Christmas and more toward the holiday season. It is a way of bringing the holidays together instead of picking out one holiday. Although, I do admit that if the intention of Starbucks was to focus on holidays and not just Christmas, they should have added blue or silver to their cups for Hanukkah.

So Starbucks serves coffee to customers in a red cup, who cares? There are worse problems in the world then the color of the cup my coffee goes into.

Superb superhero symbolism Connor Poorman Staff Writer cmp7673@lhup.edu In the past, I’ve often talked about the brighter side of life, but for this week’s issue, I’m going to discuss some references to movies and their characters as I’m a nerd who loves the symbolism.

As a start, I guess I should explain that I’m on the Batman spectrum of the DC world. Don’t get me wrong; I think Superman is a good character but I always felt that Superman lacked the depth of Batman; I’m sure people agree with me.

All of the Batman movies with Christian Bale were spectacular examples of Batman’s symbol. The Batman Arkham game series not only went to support Batman’s symbolism but also exceeded its predecessor’s.

Superman may wear “Hope” in the shape of an S on his chest, but Batman doesn’t need to show you hope, he teaches you how hope will always be there, no matter the circumstances.

Let’s start with my own reasons for preferring Batman over Superman.

Superman is the man of steel: he does things beyond human capabilities mainly because he is an alien to our world. However, he touts that he has a human side which is highly debatable.

General Zod may have been a dictator-like figure, but how different is Superman? He is more of a global police officer than a protector who relies solely on his strength.

Batman, however, is a human. He doesn’t rely on super strength and perhaps that’s why some people would sympathize with Batman more.

Batman, though, after saying he is human, stands for more than just who is behind the mask, regardless of gender.

Batman symbolizes that humanity can still fight for itself, that there is hope that our existence is not just evil but that there is more to us and that we can create hope where there is none.

It’s the lessons from Batman’s symbolism that really create a greatness to his true analysts. Batman’s symbol can be applied to most of our lives and I believe it is a truly uniting cause.

Now as far as who I like as a villain, of course it’s going to be the Joker. But I’m sure I could write another whole article about him, so I’ll hold off on that.

As Jim Gordan said: “He’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now.” Just hope that you never have to apply Harvey Dent’s quote, “You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

It’s a story women know well: your period arrives when you’re blissfully unsuspecting. You dig frantically through your bag in a desperate search for a spare tampon or a handful of change.

Nothing. You’re forced to shove a wad of toilet paper into your underwear and hope it doesn’t leak.

People have worn underwear for the past 500 years but, during that time, underwear has remained largely unchanged. One would think such a long span of time would allow us to improve such an imperfect technology.

THINX is a company striving to do just that.

THINX produces “technologically advanced leak and stain resistant underwear” for women.

That’s right, they’re period panties.

Each pair of underwear has four layers to

keep a woman fresh and dry while menstruating: moisture wicking, anti-microbial, absorbent and leak-resistant. The founders of THINX spent years researching fabrics to ensure that the underwear is as comfortable and functional as possible.

There are four underwear styles available that can hold from half a tampon to two full tampons worth of blood for your light and heavy days alike.

After each use, the underwear needs to be rinsed, washed in cold water and hung to dry.

But while THINX is making significant changes in the way American women menstruate, their goal is larger than that. For every one pair of underwear purchased, seven reusable pads are given to a girl in Africa which allows that girl to further her education. THINX also helps African women by creating jobs where they are able to make the pads that are given to their daughters.

THINX also created jobs in Sri Lanka where their underwear is made in a family-run factory.

This factory provides education that empowers its female employees to become leaders in their

communities.

Women worldwide are often held back by their periods. In the United States, we are shamed if we forget a pad or tampon and leak through our pants.

In other countries, girls are unable to receive an education because they can’t go to school during their “week of shame.”

THINX is working to break the taboo of menstruation. Our periods will never be the same.

Lock Haven University basketball preview

Womens basketball picked fifth in PSAC East

Ninth year head coach, Jennifer Smith will lead the Lock Haven University women’s basketball team into the 2015-16 season on the heels of their first berth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoff in 24 years.

Smith had two return starters from last year’s 11-16 (10-12 PSAC) team in senior J.J. Hilliard and graduate student Rachael McDaniel.

Hilliard returns as a three-time captain.

McDaniel shot a team-high 31.9 percent from three point range last season and provided tenacious defense. “One of the best defenders in the conference,” said Smith about McDaniel in an interview with www. golhu.com.

While Smith will be tasked with filling the production lost by the departure of three starters, she also returns Loren Kaiser, Sydney Morse and Syvae McDaniel, all of which played in 25 or more games last season.

The loss of Marrysa Moyer will be the most notable for Smith. Moyer was a member of the 1,000 point club in her career for the Bald Eagles. She was second on the team with 10.0 points per game and lead the team with 9.8 rebounds per game.

The 2015 Bald Eagles team will feature four talented freshman: Madison McHale, Ayanda McGillJefferson, Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh and Deja Young. “We have four great freshman. Great kids, all working really hard. We’ll see who steps up and can helps us this year,” said Smith.

McHale, a 5-foot-8 guard from

Neshannock High School, led her high school team with 19.2 points per game and is known for her shooting ability. Basketball is a family affair for the McHale family as her mother played at Clarion University and her aunt played at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

McGill-Jefferson, a 5-foot-11 power forward, led J.P. McCaskey to their first Section I title since 2006 and posted a 20-point, 25-rebound game which led the team into the LL Championship game.

Shelton-Burleigh, a State College native, was named a 2nd team all star in the Mid-Penn Conference Commonwealth Division.

Coach Smith’s team also possesses a nice balance between underclassmen and upperclassmen (4 freshman, 2 sophomores, 5 juniors, 4 seniors).

The team was selected to finish

fifth in the PSAC East Preseason Coaches Poll. West Chester was picked to finish first, followed by Shippensburg, Bloomsburg and Millersville.

The 26-game schedule includes four non-conference games against Davis & Elkins, Saint Michael’s, Georgian Court and Post.

Following the season-opening matchups against Davis & Elkins and Saint Michael’s in the Wolf’s Bus Line Classic, the team will open with three road-PSAC matchups.

The tilt against Georgian Court will see the team return to Thomas Fieldhouse for a six game homestand.

The regular season will conclude with five of seven games on the road.

Preseason PSAC No. 1 West Chester will visit LHU on Jan. 23.

Lock Haven enters the season with an all-time record of 392-499 (.436).

Mens basketball looks for big things in 2015-16 Jayson Moyer Managing Editor jpm362@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University men’s basketball team, coming off a 10-17 overall 2014-15 campaign, will begin their quest to a PSAC Championship on Friday at 3p.m. against Nyack in the Wolf’s Bus Classic.

Picked fourth in the PSAC preseason poll, the Bald Eagles are fresh off their second straight PSAC playoff appearance.

The 2013-14 season was the first time Lock Haven had earned a spot in the PSAC playoffs since 2003.

Lock Haven returns a total of six players from last season, with the most notable being guard Bootsie Walker.

The junior out of Chester, Pa. was picked to the preseason PSAC All-Conference team this season after

averaging 10.5 points per game last season and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Also returning in the backcourt is redshirt-senior guard Al Blount.

Blount averaged 8.9 points per game last season while shooting 47 percent from three point range.

Senior guard Elijah Cooper, redshirt-sophomore Ra’eese Hunt, senior Dave Garcia, and redshirtsenior Julian Bond also return for Lock Haven.

Also added in the mix are three transfers. Senior forward Tracy Peal joins the Bald Eagles after being a 2013-14 All-PSAC selection at Kutztown.

Shawn Church, a 6-3 guard joins Lock Haven after averaging 10 points per game while shooting 42 percent from three point range at Harcum College, a top-10 JUCO, last season.

Another 6-3 guard, Cole Renninger, comes to Lock Haven after playing at Division-I Lehigh the past

two seasons. Renninger played in a total of 24 games in his two seasons at Lehigh.

Lock Haven finished last season seventh in the PSAC in scoring with 73.6 points per game, while shooting 42.2 percent from the field which ranked 14th in the PSAC. As a team, the Bald Eagles shot 30 percent from beyond the arch and were seventh in the PSAC in rebounding with 36.3 rebounds per game.

In losing three starters, Lock Haven lost three of their top four scores, most notably Wali Hepburn.

Hepburn led the team with 19.4 points per game, while Theo West and Nate Walters tied for third on the team in points with 9.6.

Lock Haven’s 26 game schedule features five non-conference games, with the first being Nyack on Friday followed by Penn State Lehigh Valley at 3p.m. on Saturday.

The Bald Eagles will then play four more games away from home in a span of six days, with three PSAC tilts at West Chester, California (Pa.), and Slippery Rock. A non-conference matchup at Carlow University (Pa.) ends the road trip before the home opener on Nov. 28 against Penn State Fayette.

The Penn State Fayette game begins a seven game homestand for Lock Haven, as they will play six straight PSAC contests at home in December and into January.

Lock Haven will host preseason PSAC No. 2 Kutztown on Dec. 16 during their six game homestand.

The regular season closes out on Feb. 20 as Lock Haven will travel to PSAC No. 1 East Stroudsburg.

Head coach Mike Nestor, who has turned the program around in his four years at the helm, is looking to guide the Eagles to their third straight PSAC postseason appearance.

Football takes Bloomsburg to double-overtime Sam Wilson Staff Writer slw2547@lhup.edu Lock Haven University lost 31-28 this past Saturday, Nov. 7 in double over-time against an always top of the charts team, Bloomsburg University.

Bloomsburg, with the tenth ranked offense and third ranked defense in the Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference (PSAC) looked to be comparable to Lock Haven’s thirteenth ranked offense and eleventh ranked defense.

The Bald Eagles scored first in less than four minutes with a 1-yard pass from Caleb Walton to Dan Krupko.

The Huskies rushing game seemed to be wearing down the Bald Eagles defense late into the first quarter and into the half. Bloomsburg led over Lock Haven 14-10 at halftime.

The Bald Eagles came out strong to start the second half with a fumble recovery by defensive lineman, Jake Peck, on their own 27 yard line. LHU was forced to settle for a field goal shortly after the recovery.

The next drive for the Bald Eagles was 67 yards and resulted in a 5-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Seif with 8:28 left in the third quarter, giving Lock Haven the lead 19-14.

The Huskies drove down the field late in the fourth quarter, only to fumble on the 15 yard line which was recovered by LHU defensive back, Daniel Strawbridge.

After moving 57 yards down the field, Caleb Walton completes an 18-yard pass to tight end, Del’Vaughn Dennis, for the Bald Eagle touchdown. With the failed extra point, LHU went up 25-22 with 10:13 left in the game.

Bloomsburg’s Tyler Smith, made a 24-yard field goal with 2:18 left in the fourth to tie the game at 25-25, which sent the game into over-time.

The Bald Eagle defense played strong to hold off the Husky offense, leaving it up to their offense to get the score. LHU kicker, Alex Boumerhi, missed the field goal to send it into double over-time.

The Lock Haven offense held long enough to score a 22-yard field goal to start off the double-OT. But the defense was not able to hold off the Bloomsburg offense for one more drive, letting up the walk-off touchdown. Final score, 3128 Bloomsburg.

Senior captain, Tony Ballon’s thought on the loss, “Anytime you lose it’s not a good time, especially when you know you should have won. There’s not much we can do now but look forward to our next game, our next possible win.”

The Bald Eagles take on California University of Pennsylvania at Hubert Jack Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 14.

Boxing shows dominance at Fall Brawl

The Lock Haven University boxing team showed the community what the team is made of at the second annual Fall Brawl at the LHU East Campus Gymnasium.

The event featured seven teams, including the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, Penn State University, Shippensburg University, Kutztown University, the University of Connecticut and Lock Haven. The event consisted of two cards: an afternoon card and a main card. The afternoon card, which started at 1:00 p.m., featured five matches, none of which had Lock Haven boxers. The main card, which started at 7:00 p.m., featured 12 matches with five LHU bouts.

Tafari Gravesande (pictured right) and Zack Rice both earned a hardfought win for the bald eagles. Gravesande defeated Moses Sun from the Army Academy. Rice earned a decision over Army’s Josh Melendez.

Gravesande was thrilled with his victory against a very tough opponent in Sun. “I was really excited and I tried to get a really big hit,” said Gravesande.

“We work really hard and my Zack always told us to take one fight at a time.

I was just trying to keep myself focused, but I was happy to get the win.” The win gave Gravesande his first win in front of the home crowd.

Zack Rice was also enthusiastic about his big win against Melendez. “I felt great,” said Rice. “Just getting a win in front of your home crowd is always a better feeling.”

Lock Haven head boxing coach Ken Cooper was very pleased with his team’s performance. “For this time of the season, I’m very happy with where

we’re at,” said Cooper. “Any type of win makes me happy, but the way they box makes me happier.”

The Lock Haven University boxing team will host the 37th annual Lock Haven collegiate invitational on February 27 at Thomas Field House. The LHU Boxing team will also host the National Collegiate Boxing Association Eastern Regional tournament on the second weekend of March next year.

Senior Dylan Mountain (pictured, No. 455) cruised to the individual title, leading all seven Bald Eagle runners to All-Region status, as the No. 10 Lock Haven University men’s cross country team finished second overall today in the team standings at the 2015 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships.

By way of the second-place finish the Bald Eagles have earned a spot in the 2015 NCAA DII Championships to be held on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course in Joplin, Missouri.

Mountain opened up a 100-meter lead less than a half mile into the race and never looked back, cruising to his first career NCAA regional title. Mountain crossed his home 10K course in 30:27.1. Mountain was fourth at the Atlantic Region Championships last season, after finishing seventh and 14th, respectively the previous two years.

Much like the Bald Eagles, Shippensburg’s entire top-seven also earned AllRegion status and the Red Raiders edged Lock Haven, by just six points (35-41) in the team standings for the title. Edinboro was third overall, as the top three teams all earned a spot in the NCAA Championships.
