In the wake of the mass shooting in Roseburg, Oregon last week, guns have once again moved to the forefront of the senate race.

The bipartisan bill from Senators Pat Toomey and Joe Manchin to strengthen background checks in the wake of Sandy Hook failed by five votes in April 2013. Five of the Democrats who voted in favor of the bill lost their seats to Republicans backed by the NRA. Toomey told the Washington Post that he was looking for a way to resurrect the legislation with Manchin: “What I’m trying to figure out is, is there something that could get the support of the 60 votes that we would need in the Senate. Joe Manchin was and is a great partner and someone I will continue to work with, and I’m open to exploring what is possible.”

Wed. morning the Pittsburgh Post Gazette received the following statement from Steve Kelly, press secretary for Toomey’s re-election campaign: “We welcome Katie McGinty’s support of the ToomeyManchin background checks legislation. If she really wanted to be helpful, she would turn her attention to those who oppose the bill, including her fellow Democrats, rather than trying to concoct far-fetched political attacks against the bill’s sponsor, Pat Toomey.”

The Oregon shooting has re-opened raised concerns around the country about on-campus gun regulations.

Under Oregon law, the possession of a firearm on school property is legal.

PASSHE universities have the ability to prohibit weapons, including legally registered firearms, in academic buildings, student residence halls, dining facilities, student union buildings, athletic facilities and recreation centers or while attending a sporting, entertainment or educational event on university property or sponsored by the university. However,

PASSHE’s policies also must be consistent with Pennsylvania law, which allows individuals who are properly permitted to carry a firearm ‘on or about one’s person or in a vehicle throughout the Commonwealth.’

At LHU, concealed weapons are prohibited in all buildings and sporting events, with the exception that allows permit holders to carry in open spaces.

Gayatri Devi of Lock Haven’s English department says of on-campus gun control: “There is something intrinsically monstrous and obscene about gun massacres in a place of learning such as a school or a university.

Guns have no place in a classroom.

Violence has no place in a classroom or a university campus, period.

We teach students how to become thoughtful, ethical and just human beings primarily through acquiring knowledge and using their brains. It is monstrous that on a university campus students would shoot before they talk or think. It is very disturbing.

Last year, we had Elliot Rodger at UCSB Isla Vista who shot and murdered students and bystanders because he could not get a date with a woman. At the time, I was repulsed to hear the infamous ‘Joe the Plumber’ tell the media loudly that ‘your dead kids don’t trump my constitutional right’ to carry guns. I am probably the minority report here, but I find a sentiment like that unbelievably arrogant and ignorant.

I support responsible gun ownership and usage, but they have no place in a classroom or a university campus.”

The climate’s change is on all of us Joshua Cenderelli Staff Writer jxc3298@lhup.edu Md. Khalequzzaman, professor of geology at LHU, said the problem in finding a solution to climate change lies in the ethical dilemmas of mitigation and adaptation on Wednesday Oct. 7.

The Industrial Revolution began the largest advancement for humanity and one of the largest short-term changes in the climate. The advancements include: longer life expectancy, economic growth and prosperity. The problem is it has taken its toll on the environmental landscape through deforestation, atmospheric composition through a rise in greenhouse gasses (GHG) and causing biological problems. In 1988, James Hansen, former atmospheric physicist for NASA, testified on climate change before congress and said, “ Our climate is changing, humans are to blame, you should listen.”

Since 1900, the amount of GHGs has been steadily rising, and humans are the problem. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the largest problem accounting for 75-80 percent of the GHGs. It has risen to over 400 parts per million (ppm) from 255 in 1900. The overall temperature of the globe has risen by roughly one degree celsius, or by roughly two degrees. The problem with this is that the poles rise more than the equator, so an overall change of two degrees would translate to around ten degrees in the poles.

Sea level change is problematic, without the poles the sea levels will rise up to two meters, or about seven feet. This could wipe out entire countries like the Maldives and Fiji causing climate refugees and resulting in another dilemma with who will take them in.

Rick Lilla, Media Librarian at LHU, said, “People will keep going until they go off a cliff.” This has been the problem of ethics and how

to mitigate the responsibilities of fixing this problem. The U.S., China, U.K., Japan and India account for 55 percent of the overall GHGs; the problems arising are due to the “blame game”. As of September 2015, China has superseded the U.S. as the largest GHG producing country and they blame the U.S. and Europe. The argument they present is that the need for so many Chinese manufactured products is causing them to produce so many GHGs, therefore they should not be responsible.

The goal is to keep CO2 in the atmosphere under 450 ppm. This comes from the goal of keeping away from a change in the average global temperature of two degrees celsius. The last time the average temperature was two degrees above the 1900 average was 125,000 years ago in the last warm period. On the other hand, the last time the temperature was two degrees below the 1900 average was the last ice age.

The solution to this came from the Deep Decarbonization Pathways Project (DDPP) and the idea of differential common responsibility. Differential common responsibility is the idea that everyone has the responsibility to help find a solution, but with varying degrees of depth. The U.S. and China would have the most to do while smaller countries like the Maldives and Fiji have a responsibility, but not as much. DDPP has had the largest CO2 producing countries come up with four solutions each to assist in the overall decrease of carbon in the air. According to Khalequzzaman, “The U.S. agreed to come up with a clean power plant to reduce CO2 emissions by 32 percent by 2030.” For the world to put itself on track it would need to reduce its overall usage of CO2 by 50 percent by the year 2050.

The biggest concern is the cost of fixing this problem. Khalequzzaman states, “If the global temperature rises two degrees celsius it would cost the global GDP $2.8 trillion. The cost to fix this problem is estimated to be only $700 billion, which is only one percent of the globe’s GDP”.

Paul McCartney: Getting back ‘Out There’ next week STATE COLLEGE – For the first time in history, Paul McCartney will be performing in Central Pennsylvania at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center, Thursday, Oct. 15 on the universally acclaimed “Out There” tour.

‘City Skylines’: It’s time to expand ‘After Dark’ Michael Eubanks Guest Writer mae7020@lhup.edu “Cities Skylines: After Dark” is the first expansion pack for Paradox Entertainment’s popular city building simulation. This review is based on the PC digital download. As an expansion pack, this title requires a copy of the original title and therefore will only appeal to fans of the original game. The core game allows players to plan and manage a city from bare earth to thriving metropolis, or anything in between. The difficulty of reviewing this type of expansion, is that the content is so thoroughly integrated that it is difficult to separate the new content from the core gameplay experience. The original title is worthwhile for fans of the genre, but this review will focus on the new

content and assumes some familiarity with the original.

The most notable addition that this expansion brings is that cities are no longer trapped in perpetual daylight. A day/night cycle gives city builders the opportunity to witness their creations under the lights. Like the original title, the graphics are appealing, and the lighting effects look impressive. However, the developers decided to release the day/night cycle as a free update; so the value of this new expansion lies primarily in new buildings and gameplay tweaks designed to take advantage of it.

In terms of value, the content is decent for the price; but in terms of utility, the expansion doesn’t add anything essential to the core experience.

Many of the new structures revolve around creating commercial zones that are specialized for leisure and tourism. In practice, most of the simulation takes

place under the hood, so there is little difference in experience between the specialized commercial zones, and the traditional city-simulation RCI zones that are already in the base game. The pack adds a lot of new options, which allows the player to tweak the game in numerous ways. However, the new content is evolutionary more often than it is game-changing. It provides more of the same, rather than a fundamentally new experience.

This expansion is recommended with these caveats in mind. Those who play city simulators for the aesthetics already have most of this expansions appeal in the free update. For those who don’t enjoy the spreadsheet balancing aspects of simulation games, it is probably safe to give this expansion a pass. Hardcore simulation fans, however, will find a lot of new options that will allow them to min/ max to their hearts content.

A double feature of ‘007’

LOCK HAVEN – The British Television Club is proud to announce a ‘007’ Double Feature on Saturday, October 10. The event will be held in the Hall of Flags from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.

The Double Feature will include the classic James Bond films “Goldfinger,” starring Sean Connery, and “GoldenEye,” starring Pierce Brosnan. “We’re really excited to showcase James Bond,” said Matt McLaughlin, president of the British Television Club.

Even though BTC usually watches TV shows, McLaughlin is looking forward to presenting more movies.

“He’s such an important icon in British culture,” said McLaughlin.

The club views different British television shows every week, ranging from comedies, dramas, and reality shows.

Even though BTC was organized around the popular science fiction show Doctor Who, they’ve broaden their horizons.

“We’ve been working towards including both popular shows, like Downton Abbey, and more obscure ones, like Hamish Macbeth,” said Grace Harrison, vice president.

“Our club is super casual. It’s just a nice time for us to get together every week and geek out a little bit,” said Harrison. Meetings are on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in PUB room 3.

Going to the movies is a lot of fun especially if it means a well deserved break from the daily grind to lose yourself in a comedy, an action or, especially in the month of Halloween, a horror movie. Here are three movies coming out in theaters this month to look forward to.

1. “Pan” Directed by Joe Wright and starring Hugh Jackman, “Pan” isn’t just another remake of the beloved “Peter Pan” tale, but the origin story of the hero by the same name. In this action adventure, Peter, an orphan, is swept away to the magical world of Neverland where he finds not only fun and dangers, but ultimately his destiny.

“Pan” hits theaters tomorrow, Oct. 9.

2. “Steve Jobs” Directed by Danny Boyle and starring Michael Fassbender, this biopic follows passionate Jobs as he launches three iconic Apple products. It is an insightful film showing how his career affected his personal life and his health.

3. “Goosebumps” Directed by Rob Letterman and starring Jack Black, this movie follows the story of Zach Cooper after he moves

to Greendale, Maryland and meets Hannah, the daughter of R. L. Stine, the writer of the “Goosebumps” series. After Zach accidently unleashes the monsters from the young adult horror series, it’s up to him, Hannah and the author himself to put them back in the books.

Check out “Goosebumps”, in theaters Friday, Oct. 16.

4. “Crimson Peak” Directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Tom Hiddleston, this supernatural horror follows a young woman who, after a family tragedy, is seduced by a mysterious stranger and swept away to a house on top a mountain of red clay. Will she be able to escape the ghosts of her past in this mysterious house?

“Crimson Peak” hits theaters on Friday, Oct. 16.

5. “The Last Witch Hunter” Directed by Breck Eisner and starring Vin Disel, this action adventure follows the story of the last witch hunter who must fight against an old foe that will determine the survival of the human race.

“The Last Witch Hunter” hits theaters Oct. 23.

These five movies are not the only ones coming out this month. Other movies include true story “The Walk,” coming out Oct. 9, the spy thriller “Bridge of Spies,” coming out Oct. 16 and horror movie “Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension” coming out on Oct. 23.

Season premiere of ‘Flash’ doesn’t cut it Grace Harrison Design Manager geh1996@lhup.edu The highly anticipated second season premiere of “The Flash” aired this week on The CW. After last season’s massive cliffhanger, fans couldn’t wait to find out what happened to the Flash and the rest of Central City.

Barry Allen is the fastest man alive, The Flash, played by Grant Gustin. He’s a forensic scientist with the extraordinary ability to run at superhuman speeds. As the Flash, Barry fights crime and other “metahumans” with the help of his friends.

Last season ended with Barry and “Team Flash” defeating the Reverse-Flash at the cost of Eddie Thawne. Eddie’s sacrifice erased the ReverseFlash from existence, but also created a giant black hole above Central City. As with all good cliffhangers, fans were left wondering if Barry could stop the city from being destroyed.

Tuesday’s premiere picks up six months after last season’s events. Barry has decided to fight crime alone to protect everyone he cares about, like we

haven’t seen that before. Despite Barry committing to the “brooding hero” act, the rest of Central City has caught Flash fever. During a “Flash Day” celebration, the mayor presents the Flash with a key to the city. The festivities are cut short when a mysterious villain, who resembles a knockoff Bane, appears.

Overall, this was a solid episode. It lacked the same amount of comic-like feel as the previous season, but I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully the show will regain the rest of its charm as the season progresses.

The plot was stiff at points, especially when Barry was working alone. Even though the black hole flashback was filled with science mumbo jumbo, it helped fill in the gaps.

As usual, Jesse L. Martin steals the show as Joe West. Joe’s relationship with Barry is always my favorite part of the show. I’m also happy to see Iris given a more inclusive role with the rest of “Team Flash.” The episode definitely improved as the team got back together. Even though this wasn’t their best effort, “The Flash” is still the best superhero show currently on television.

“The Flash” airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on The CW. The entire first season is now available on Netflix.

Where in the World: Sochi, Russia Raymond Stellhorn Columnist Rjs2091@lhup.edu Remember the place where the 2014 Winter Olympics were held? If not, it was Sochi, Russia. There is more to this former host city than just the Olympic legacy it leaves behind. It is a thriving coastal holiday resort on the Black Sea in the Russian Federal Subject Area of Krasnodar Krai which hosts numerous events and attractions apart from the Olympic Park.

Nearby is an amusement park called SochiPark themed around the history and culture of Russia. In the city proper are luxurious hotels, delicious eateries and beautiful monuments and parks.

One of these parks is an arboretum called “Dendrarium”.

The lush park of trees and plants has a cable car ride that gives incredible views of the green scenery. For other attractions in Sochi, there are numerous sightseeing tours on land and by boat.

Outside of the city, in the nearby mountains, are some world-class ski

resorts including the ever popular Rosa Khutor Ski Resort that was used during the Winter Olympic Games.

For many today, the main attraction in Sochi is the Olympic Park still. Numerous events are still held in the area including this weekend’s Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix which will take place on a street circuit that goes through the Olympic Park.

All of the main facilities from the games are still in use including the Fisht Olympic Stadium which will be a venue for the 2018 Soccer World Cup. The magnificently designed Iceberg Skating Palace is one of the main attractions along with the ice hockey venue Bolshoy Ice Dome, Cauldron and the Medal Plaza.

Sochi offers a lovely Russian Black Sea vacation resort with so many things to do where the legacy of the Olympic Games burns on forever.

The pumpkin invasion vs. classic apple

What is this world coming to? The second October hits, pumpkin explodes.

Everywhere I turn, I get a pumpkin to the face. The white girls, like my roommates, are going crazy over it and as a white girl with no taste for pumpkin, I just don’t understand. Pumpkin spice has taken over every kind of food out there such as: Pumpkin spiced latte pizza Jell-O Pumpkin Spice Instant Pudding and Pie Filling Pepperidge Farm Pumpkin Cheesecake Cookies Jet Puffed Pumpkin Spice Mallows Thomas’ Pumpkin Spice English Muffins Pumpkin Pie Spice Pringles Potato Chips Cedar’s Pumpkin Spice Hummus Pinnacle Pumpkin Spice Vodka Pumpkin spice waffles Pringles? Pizza? How far will we go? What will we infuse with pumpkin next? I know that everything might be tried once with pumpkin but at this rate, people will stop at nothing to get more pumpkin.

Soon pumpkin will be a year-round thing and we will never escape.

With pumpkin everywhere, what about the good old apple flavor that everyone else associates fall with. I love fall for the apple recipes that are always best with fresh apples picked right from the trees. Gotta love those classic apple recipes such as.

Cinnamon baked apples Apple bars Apple cobbler Apple coleslaw Apple cookies Apple cider Apple squares Mini apple pies Apple dumplings Apple crisp Let’s tone down the pumpkin flavored everything and get some more apples!

Or at least make it a little more even. Those of us that don’t like pumpkin need some fall lovin’ too!

Tylenol: The real threat to our emotions Meghan Kuhn Guest Writer Mek454@lhup.edu Can your go to pain reliever be killing your happiness?

A recent study has offered insight that acetaminophen, an ingredient found in Tylenol, Excedrin and many other medications, can smother strong emotions.

These emotions include excruciating pain and the bite of embarrassment but the smothering can also extend to joy and amusement. All of these seem to be depleted by the drug.

For the average person we may not think about the effects of this pain reducer, instead just thinking, “if I take the right dose my pain will diminish.”

However, the medication’s effects may not be just that straightforward.

Psychologists Naomi Eisenberger and Nathan DeWall unearthed in 2010 that taking acetaminophen over the course of three weeks faded the sting of embarrassing oneself in public or impressions of mocking and rejection.

In June 2015, a continuation of DeWall and Eisenberger’s research was printed in the journal “Psychological Science.” This study displays that not only can acetaminophen change how our whole physical

and psychological pain is felt, but that it can change the ways a person’s brain manages any strong feelings a person feels.

This hypothesis was analyzed by displaying 40 pictures of very happy and very sad things to 82 college students. Half of the group was given 1,000 milligrams of the drug and the other half took a sugar pill that looked the same. After the medication was given the participants were asked to rank the pictures in regard to how happy or sad the participants thought the pictures were.

The results showed that the participants given acetaminophen rated the pictures with less strong emotions than those given the sugar pill. Though this study has only been confined to college students and was undersized, it was created with the intent of meeting the elevated criteria of pharmaceutical analysis and that it could be recreated.

According to the nonprofit Consumer Healthcare Products Association, statistics have shown that about 23% of American adults take medicine with the ingredient acetaminophen every week so it is important to continue this research to inform everyone about the medications they are taking. But never fear, more research will continue to look into not only these effects of acetaminophen, but also if Ibuprofen and Aspirin cure these effects.

Study Abroad Stories: Corfu, Greece Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor Act6730@lhup.edu Many of us who go abroad take advantage of the ease of travel. Studying abroad in Scotland didn’t give me the cheaper form of travel than those who go to mainland Europe have, but it was definitely less expensive than traveling from the USA to these magnificent places.

One of the places I traveled to was Corfu, Greece. It’s not a famous place in Greece but the places we saw were beautiful, the people were amazing and the times we had were great. The best part of this trip was that I went with nine of my friends whom I met in Scotland. I had only ever traveled with my parents and family before but traveling with friends was an entirely different experience.

With my family, our vacations were always planned out day by day whereas with my friends, we flew to Greece without any plans other than our hotels. We didn’t even know how we were going to get to our hotels. We just winged the entire trip and it was great.

We got to our first hotel called the Pink Palace. It was literally pink. Everything including the building was pink. While there, we went to the beach for the first time in forever. Our skin had turned ghost white in Scotland because the sun never came out so lying on a warm beach was the first thing we all wanted to do. We also went kayaking in crystal blue water and stopped to cliff jump for a while as well. It was fantastic.

We stayed there for a few days just enjoying the

sun and laughing together.

We then went to another part of Greece by bus where we met up with some of our backpacking friends. We fumbled around for a while until we finally made it to our second hotel where the beach near it wasn’t as nice. We rented cars and ATVs and drove around aimlessly one day just looking around and finding cool beaches to stay at for a little. There are so many beautiful places that we stumbled upon.

One day we explored the city of Corfu and saw one of their forts, did some shopping and had an amazing lunch. Just wandering around a strange city, I found is a great way to travel. If you plan out everything you’re going to do, you’ll miss the cultural aspect of it. You rush from one place to the next and don’t take your time to explore the shops and talk to the people. We met one woman who offered to send her sister two towns away to get my friend cough medicine because she didn’t sell it in her shop.

Traveling with friends is also an amazing experience because it’s just spending time with the people you love, having an adventure together and I can’t express how great it is. One of my friends from Canada, Max Lieberman said, “it was the best experience travelling with friends on exchange. It helped to build strong friendships that would last even if we all come from different countries around the world.”

We say that we’re going to have a reunion in Corfu one year and I hope that we do because I’d gladly spend any vacation with these people no matter where we are. But Greece is still a pretty cool place to visit and I definitely want to go back one day.

Alumni Corner: A reflection of student life

In high school, I was considered to be above average and graduated in the top 90 percent of my class of around 700 students. I thought that going to college and getting a degree would be easier than it actually was. I am from Chambersburg, PA where I was smart and earned good grades.

Then I came to Lock Haven and was competing with at least ten times as many people who were all just as smart or even smarter than myself.

My first semester was rough; I did not have to study to excel in high school and I think that was a huge disadvantage for me because I started freshman year not knowing how to study. I can honestly say I don’t even know if I ever learned how to study the right way.

After my first semester, I still struggled to get

my groove. I went to class, took notes and, when I was studying, felt confident in what I knew.

When it came to exam time, my confidence almost always plummeted. I remember that getting a 70 percent was a good accomplishment for me.

Even with all of the hard times, I was still able to graduate with a degree in four years and I made tons of good memories and friends along the way. I would not trade my college experience for anything, except maybe a job in the “real” world.

Not much has changed for me yet after graduation. I still work at my part time job while I look for jobs in my area. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Health Science and will eventually have to go back to school to get certified in something, more specifically becoming a surgical technician. In the meantime, I am looking for any kind of administration job in healthcare so that I can get experience to make

me a better candidate for when I am certified and even when applying to go back to school.

My only regrets are not getting more involved in the university and making better relationships with my professors. So my advice to you is if you know what you want, go after it. Get involved in clubs and groups and get to know your professors.

I am applying for jobs and it is hard because I realize that not having professional references might be what is keeping me from getting the jobs I am applying for over other candidates. In this world, the biggest advantage is knowing the right people to help you get something, whether it is a job or even a spot on a sports team.

I may have struggled a good bit but it was my own fault. I did not apply myself and it got me in hot water but I am only 22 and I have my whole life ahead of me and so do you! So go out there meet some really cool people and get ready for the “real” world as it is quite an adventure!

Be a cup filler not a cup spiller Connor Poorman Staff Writer cmp7673@lhup.edu I’m not going to talk about the news this week as I believe it speaks for itself. I’ve been talking about a lot of awful things that has happened to many misfortunate people but this time, I think I should talk about the brighter side of things, something more personal rather than something more stress-inducing and on a larger scale. Let’s just say this is a healthy observation on life to remind us where we are in time.

There’s a lot of bad things in this world whose shadow eclipses a lot of good things, but when you notice the good things: the bad things don’t overwhelm you.

For example, as a guy or rather as myself, I like to hold the door open for people. Sometimes people notice it, and sometimes they don’t, but really it just makes me feel good. I tell people to have a nice day or afternoon or weekend and I really appreciate it when people say the same to me. I like to help people when they drop something, or if someone falls. I like to see people smiling rather than frowning.

Generally, helping people just makes me feel good and I’d hope it makes other people feel good.

I’ve been told that seeing the cup half full rather than empty is being unrealistic. I’m not usually one to get angry, but when someone tells me I’m not

being realistic because I like to help people – well I usually have some choice words. I’ve seen what happens when the bad things overwhelm a person, or that is to say, I’ve experienced what happens.

It took me a very long time to crawl out of the ditch called “realistic”, but when I did it was like waking up. I could know the realistic side of things but not let them drag me down, and I could help other people not be brought down as well. In a way, helping people is selfish but it’s a good kind of selfish.

You’re helping yourself but you’re not stepping over people; you’re helping them stand back up.

Isn’t that what life is about?

At some point in life, you will fall down and getting up will be the toughest challenge. But standing up again and facing each day, taking notice and doing the small things are what keeps us standing. For every person who passes, another is born. No matter how dark the world looks, there will be a horizon to look to. There will always be bad things, but there will always be good things as well. No matter how deep a trench is, there will always be a sky that is vast.

I’m going to continue to do things that make me feel good, no matter how full or empty the cup is. There is no way to avoid the cup from eventually spilling, but remember there will always be something to fill the cup again.

Stagnancy will not lead to success Megan Fultz Guest Writer mfultz@lhup.edu Whether you are an only child or you have a sibling, you are constantly at the mercy of societal pressure or familial pressure to become or do something that is less than the human being you’re trying to become.

Although I do not have personal experience in this case, I have many friends who are going through these pressures.

I am privileged, in the fact, that my parents have always been very supportive of anything my older brother and I wanted to do, but I know not everyone has that luxury. Parenting has become

comparative in nature.

Well, I have news for each and every college student, young adult and even parents. You cannot press a child into a cookie-cutter mold. No child is the same.

Children change and they need to be able to shape themselves, find out who they are without being pressured to become something that they’re not or someone they don’t believe they are. Young adults need understanding, love and care.

If you’re a parent, keep in mind that if you try to make your child become someone they’re not , you’ve ultimately made them feel as though who they think they are is wrong.

I’ve recently told a friend that if you do not take opportunities you’re not being successful, but her

parents believe that by becoming stagnant and staying in her home town will be her success and that she is giving up opportunities at home; when, in reality, she has better opportunities elsewhere that doesn’t involve factory work. Stagnancy is not success, so go out and take those chances that may make you the person you want to become.

Being a young adult is a time where you’re striving to become who you are meant to be, and if you’re a young adult whose parents are holding you back then take the chance, no matter how “stupid” your conquest sounds.

You are not your sibling, your cousin or that kid down the street who went to Yale and you need to find out who you are before your success has stagnated and the real you is left behind.

PSU’s Franklin selling us nothing Jayson Moyer Managing Editor jpm362@lhup.edu The rain and clouds that swarmed over Beaver Stadium on Saturday were doubled by about 2:45p.m. as Penn State eked out a 20-14 win over Army.

It was another boring, pitiful and just awful game played by the Nittany Lions. Grant it, they have moved to 4-1 on the season, but their 4-1 record seems like a 2-2 record at best.

Mixed emotions with glimmers of shame and then spotty moments of hope for what the future holds for Penn State football have filled the minds of Penn State football fans since August. But there’s the problem: no one knows what the future holds.

Penn State has won three straight since getting blown out of Philadelphia by Temple in week one.

Temple is the only decent team they have played.

Buffalo could not win the FCS championship, Rutgers was without a head coach, San Diego State is a joke and Army only attempted one pass because of their triple-option offense, and they still would have beaten Penn State if it weren’t for turnovers.

What is James Franklin trying to sell us?

At heart, Franklin is a great salesman.

He is an astounding recruiter and has the ability to put together talented teams at Penn State in the future if he can show one thing: His ability to coach.

I think there is a concern in State College that no one really knows what Franklin is exactly trying to sell us and whether it is merely an empty pitch for a subpar product.

In my opinion, there is still an emotional void in State College and it remains to be seen whether Franklin possesses the proper emotional makeup or the requisite raw materials needed to fill it -either as a coach or mentor to young prospects like Christian Hackenberg or as a coach.

We are four years since the grand jury report about Jerry Sandusky’s horrible crimes against young children were made to the public. Four years is enough time for Penn State students to forget about that scandal when it comes to football -- because that’s what Penn State students look forward to on fall Saturday’s. But the problem is that four years is not enough time for that event to move from a news story into a historical event.

I sat in section EE on Saturday’s game against Army in the cold, rain

and on Military Day, and I had to sit there thinking to myself, “Penn State had to remove a military veteran from being honored during the coin toss because of his ties with Sandusky.”

Bruce Heim, the military veteran, is a former board member of the charity that Sandusky founded, The Second Mile.

Penn State president, Eric Barron said in a press release that Heim was being honored in would have distracted the public from the purpose of the day.

The distractions still arise from that horrific event. And it kills me as a lifelong Penn State fan that I cannot talk about Penn State football to a non Penn State fan without having the topic of this controversy brought up.

We all know it was wrong. We all know how horrible it was. We all feel bad for each and every victim that was harmed by Sandusky. But none of this will go away anytime soon.

The fact that this will linger around does not help Franklin in the slightest.

A pregame video plays at Beaver Stadium before home games, with a deep voice saying, “Win for those who came before you.” Then you see glimpses of Joe Paterno on the video boards in the endzone. You see Bill O’Brien. People are going

nuts. And it is the nature of a great fan of a program who once experience sustained greatness to believe that the greatness will come around again.

The added complication for Penn State is that the great history of this program is now larded with deep wounds that continue to be reopened.

Franklin continues to be positive, and he has to be. He acknowledged it in his press conference earlier this week. So, in a way, I really can’t blame him for talking about the program as if all is well, even though it really isn’t.

He knows his team isn’t good. He knows it will take time. But we know that, too. And what we also know is that Franklin has shown no ability in putting together a decent game-plan or with developing players.

Penn State hosts Indiana on Saturday at Beaver Stadium, beginning their Big Ten play for the rest of the season. Indiana almost upset Ohio State, and Penn State travels to Ohio State on Oct. 17th.

Maybe we will sit here in November with Penn State finishing 9-3. Or maybe we will sit here with a 6-6 or 7-5 team, with the rain and the clouds still hovering over Beaver Stadium, wondering how fast this is going to get better.

Professors’ patience towa rds jokesters

Nicole Creamer Staff Writer nac8638@lhup.edu We all know at least one person who always has to be the funny one. Whether it is at home or in class, this person needs to be the comedic relief even when none is needed. Don’t get me wrong, I love funny people and a lot of my friend’s think I’m funny, but I know when being funny is appropriate.

In the middle of class is not the appropriate time.

Some professors like to make their courses more fun by adding a joke here or there which is great but when a student tries to be funny just to

stall or get the professor off track, it is annoying and downright rude.

Most students in college are between seventeen and twenty-three, yet we still have students that act as though they are freshman in high school. I truly hope the jokesters know that these types of things will not fly in a workplace.

I must hand it to professors; they know how to deal with this type of student. In one of my classes, the professor took what the student was trying to sidetrack him with and used it as part of his next topic for us to learn. Another one of my professors kindly answers the questions or acknowledges the comments and moves on.

Professors have the patience needed to put up

with a variety of students and as a future business leader, I commend them on that.

College courses seem to show what a business meeting will be like and the types of people you will run into while at work. There’s the knowit-all, the lazy one, the jokester, the opinionated person and so on. All of these people will be people you run into in classes and at work one day.

How do you deal with all of these people without losing your cool? This is something I think most people will benefit from; if they learn how to deal with it. Look toward your professors for the answers. Professors know how to deal with a multitude of personalities and they usually deal with them well.

Amspacher leading men’s soccer in conference play Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University men’s soccer team was picked to finish 10th in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coaches’ Poll, but don’t tell that to head coach Doug Moore’s team.

The Bald Eagles are off to a 5-5-1 start, but have gone 4-1 in conference play after dropping the conference opener to Bloomsburg.

They season began 1-3-1, but the team has gone on to win four of their last six contests.

Junior Troy Amspacher has spearheaded the offense this season as he leads the team in both goals (5) and assists (2). Amspacher has combined with senior Jacob Oldaker, junior Tyler Weikert and sophomore Gage Rims as the only players to start in every game this season.

Weikert has proven to be the ironman on the team by playing a teamhigh 1,016 minutes this season.

Perhaps the most impressive part of LHU’s success has been that some of their victories have come against quality opponents. Gannon was picked to finish seventh, Shippensburg was placed ninth, East Stroudsburg was picked 11th and Seton Hill was seeded third in the poll.

Head coach, Doug Moore will have to have his team prepared for a tough finish to the season. The team has two matches against nonconference opponents in West Virginia Wesleyan and Urbana (the alma mater of head football coach Dave Taynor). Sandwiched between those two games is a pivotal matchup under the lights against Mercyhurst, who was selected to finish first in the PSAC Coaches’ Poll.

Their remaining games are at West Chester, home against Slippery Rock and then on the road at California (Pa.).

Volleyball drops PSAC East match at UPJ, moves to 10-8 Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University volleyball team (10-8, 2-5 PSAC) fell, 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 25-9 & 25-15) tonight to host Pitt-Johnstown (13-2, 7-0 PSAC) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action.

Brittany Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) and Sarah Gomish (Ebensburg, Pa./Bishop Carroll) led the Bald Eagles attack with nine and eight kills, respectively. Jessica Brown (Fawn Grove, Pa./Kennard Dale) dished out 21 assists.

Megan Flick (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle) added six kills, 18 digs and five block assists.

Sydney Belcastro (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) led The Haven with 23 digs.

With the win, Pitt-Johnstown remained undefeated in PSAC action at 7-0. Cambria Weirman, the reigning PSAC East Player of the Week, knocked down a match-high 14 kills (.250) and Kendall Mahony hit .345 (14 kills) to help UPJ to the victory.

LHU returns to action on Friday, October 9 at Kutztown (7 p.m.).

$216,149.02 raised for athletic scholarships Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu

The students, parents, friends and alumni of Lock Haven University banded together to raise an astounding $216,149.02 to support scholarships for the student-athletes of the university.

The 24-hour All In Day of Giving Challenge began on Oct. 1 at 10:01 a.m. with a goal of raising $50,000. Donations could be made to a specific athletic program or to the entire athletic department. One-hundred percent of the donations went towards the scholarship fund.

Thanks to the outstanding community of LHU students, parents, friends and alumni, it only took a mere 10 hours to reach their initial goal.

Before the campaign began, the wonderful Ron and Jo Ann Bowes pledged to match with a gift of $50,000 if the university reached their goal.

The day, which was full of challenges, also included one from the Anastos Family. Provided that the university raised $500 from 2p.m. to 3p.m., they would match that amount with a donation of their own. As was the theme of the day, the community succeeded and met the challenge.

Pierre Boumerhi was not about to be outdone, either, as he donated nine

individual gifts to the football program.

Long-time sponsor Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union (PSECU) continued in their support of Lock Haven Athletics with a gift of $2,500.

Heading into the final hour of the All In challenge, new athletic director, Tom Gioglio promised to donate $1,000 to whichever program received the most gifts. The football team received an outstanding 48 gifts in the final hour to win Gioglio’s challenge.

Michael Fiorentino, president of Lock Haven University, pledged to make a donation of $5,000 to the sport that received the most donations from the alumni throughout the day. The volleyball program won with 8.8 percent participation and were the recipient of the $5,000 scholarship.

While highlighting the contributions made by those above, it is important to remember that none of this would have been possible without the excellent staff behind the scenes.

Additionally, we would like to thank all of those that made a donation to Lock Haven Athletics, no matter how large or small. Each and every donation is greatly appreciated.

The Lock Haven University football team will travel to Shippensburg on Saturday after two straight home losses to East Stroudsburg and West Chester.

Last Saturday, Lock Haven fell to West Chester 33-9 to fall to 0-5 and 0-2 in conference.

Sophomore Del’Vaughn Dennis caught a 40 yard pass from Caleb Walton to open up the scoring. It was Dennis’ first touchdown reception of the season.

West Chester, however, returned the following kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at six. Each team added a field goal before the half, to go into halftime still tied at nine.

That is all that the Bald Eagles could muster though, as West Chester shut-out Lock Haven 24-0.

West Chester quarterback, Pat Moriarty threw three touchdown passes in the second half including a 18 yard pass to Adam Dempsey. Dempsey had two receptions for 24 yards.

Lock Haven quarterback Caleb Walton completed 13-33 passes for 132 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Walton also had nine rushing attempts for 47 yards.

Beau Swales carried the ball 15 times for 49 yards to lead the Lock Haven rushing attack. Malyk Harris also had seven carries for 39 yards.

Dennis led the Lock Haven receivers with six receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown. Caleb Kephart was the only other Lock Haven receiver with multiple receptions, reeling in three passes for 32 yards.

Daniel Strawbridge had 12 total tackles for Lock Haven, including 10 total tackles. Tony Ballon had ten total tackles. Strawbridge and Ballen are No. 1 and No. 2 on the team in tackles, with 51 47 tackles respectively.

Saturday marks the 71st meeting between Lock Haven and Shippensburg.

Shippensburg leads the all-time series 49-18-3. The first meeting came in 1929, with Shippensburg winning 26-0. Shippensburg has won 11 straight meetings with Lock Haven dating back to 2002, when Lock Haven won 26-13.

Kickoff is set for 1p.m. and the game can be heard on WQBR 99.9FM.
