Meet a student of LHU Nehemiah Eberhart Matthew Busch Designs & Ads Manager mdb1915@lockhaven.edu Nehemiah Eberhart, is a freshman at Lock Haven University on the journalism track in communications and he has a story to tell. He decided on communications since, even though he was okay with math, he didn’t like science. “I joined Lock Haven since it’s close to home, and I like the resources they have here,” Eberhart said. Eberhart lives in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, since where he lives is not far from campus he commutes driving his red pick up truck. He’s been driving his truck since senior year of highschool.

He likes to work out at the Rec center or at the YMCA in town. “My interests in highschool were sports, my friends did it and my coaches wanted me too as well,” Eberhart said. During his freshman year of highschool he participated in track and basketball but was cut from basketball the next year.

He participated in cross country and football during his last two years of highschool. “I’m a sports freak, since a kid I’ve had a love for sports. I didn’t play sports but I knew it,” Eberhart said. At 8 years old, he started to play and just knew when he was little that this is what he wanted to do.

“I consider teammates as a family, you grow a bond with them like brothers,” Eberhart said. Last year Eberhart and his teammates made it to district championships.

Being a sports fanatic isn’t the only thing about him. Nehemiah Eberhart was adopted 14 times throughout his life. Eberhart didn’t move around with fourteen different families, he actually only had three different families.

When he was 6 years old, he had lived with an old married couple in Chester, Pennsylvania. The couple had gotten too old to take care of him and he moved to a new family in the area. “You wouldn’t expect someone like me to be adopted, I would run away when a family didn’t want me,” Eberhart said. Since he had issues with them, he was then adopted at Lock Haven when he was in the third grade, and moved to Jersey Shore.

When he was in the fourth grade he moved to Salladasburg since there were too many kids at the house in Jersey Shore. When he thought of Salladasburg he thought of the country and farms. At first he had trouble getting used to Salladsburg since he knew everything in Philly. “I was good with maps because of my disability,” said Eberhart.

When he was in the sixth grade he moved back to the Jersey Shore and has stayed with that family ever since. To this day he is still with this current family; he’s just always felt blessed to be with them.

When he was in Philly he struggled with school, but once he lived with his current family it was then he found out that he had aspergers. Because

of it he wouldn’t talk much, but he also wasn’t antisocial. He would talk to someone if talked to if they’re a stranger, but around friends he’s very talkative. He got put on medicine for it, and was able to focus on school and not get tired. Eberhart still needs clarification despite taking the medicine.

For him to be able to understand a lesson, he would need the teacher to go over it in a different way. Here at Lock Haven University Eberhart works with Tulare Park, director of the offices disability services, as his advisor to make his school life more easier for him to adjust.

“My role is to work with a student disclose a disability, whether it’s temporary apparent or something ongoing. I work collaboratively with them to reach their educational goals. I send a letter of accommodations to their professors to help the student out; students can choose to use them or not ,” said Tulare Park.

To stay positive Nehemiah Eberhart always thought of the word adversity. He always had a smile on his face and kept his head high by moving forward.

Lovato baptism criticized Mickiah Johnson Opinions Editor mrj2829@lockhaven.edu Demi Lovato is facing backlash for a free spiritual trip in Israel, and issued an apology on October 2nd on her Instagram.

A week before her apology, Lovato posted her spirtual journey of being able to be baptized in the Jordan River. Something that should really speak to people about how she’s finding her faith after all the bad things that have occurred to her in the past year. Lovato even said, “Spirituality is so important to me. . .to be baptized in the Jordan river- the same place Jesus was baptizedI’ve never felt more renewed in my life.”

According to Pop Buzz, in response to the backlash, the singer first turned off her comments of her Israel trip post on Instagram. Fans condemned her even further for ignoring criticism, taking a trip there to begin with, and for calling Israel a “magical” place.

Many believed after Lovato posted her bapitism that the singer was giving support to the Israeli government and their discriminating policies against Palestinians.

In the singer’s Instagram apology Lovato said, “This was meant to be a spiritual experience for me, not a political statement and now I realize it hurt people and for that I’m sorry.” Apparently, this was not good enough for the public.

After facing more criticism of not choosing a side between Israel and Palestine Lovato said, “Okay y’all realize I don’t have an opinion on middle eastern conflicts nor is it my place to have one being an American singer and you’re asking me to choose a side?”

Pop singer, Zara Larsson, tweets, “I can’t chose sides in politics”. But this is controversial because you absolutely can, you just don’t care which automatically makes you a part of the oppressive side in which most people are like “oh sorry, I don’t make the rules” and do whatever they want anyways for their own benefits.

When Lovato’s fans attack the singer for only taking a dig at Demi and not other celebrities who have not chosen a side as well, Larsson tweets, “This is hands down not a post directed only to Demi, if thats what you’re referring to, but more to all the people who thinks their option to be disengaged in politics is anything but privilege.”

According to Huffington Post, Lovato noted in her post that many advised her not to speak out on the issue. But, her opinion should be a little more valued as she speaks her own truth and no one else’s, which is an important takeaway from all this “political” madness.

Perfect couple become separate, but still doting parents Kiara Carson Managing Editor knc9459@lockhaven.edu One of the most popular celebrity couples has broken up and it was a shock to us all!

Kylie Jenner recently broke off her relationship with Travis Scott, even though it seemed like everything was great leading up to inevitable demise.

They recently featured in Playboy magazine together and looked absolutely stunning together, fawning their affection for each other.

Was this real or was it all a facade to give some positive views before things exploded negatively?

Their relationship seemed perfect from all the publicity and social media interactions we received from them about how much they loved each other. They seemed to have had a picture perfect family as well when their daughter, Stormi, was born. Both parents have obviously expressed much love for their daughter and there were even speculations that Jenner wanted another child from Scott.

Those speculations were brought into even more light after their breakup with people saying Scott didn’t want another child quite yet and Jenner was tired of waiting.

Others guess that they both spent too much apart once Scott went on tour and things weren’t the same when he came back into the household. The relationship became strained and eventually estranged like they didn’t know each other at all anymore.

Then, there are these huge rumors going

around that Jenner wants to get back together with her first love and ex-boyfriend, Tyga. They were seen in the same vacinity of each other in the middle of the night on multiple occassions and automatically everyone assumes they’re back together or he’s the reason she broke up with Scott.

Jenner actually spoke out about these particular rumors about her and Tyga posting her denial on Twitter. She tweets “The internet makes everything 100 times more dramatic than what it really is. There was no “2am date with Tyga”. You see me drop two of my friends off at a studio that he happened to be at.”

Then she writes a follow-up tweet saying “Travis and I are on great terms and our main focus right now is Stormi!! Our friendship and our daughter is priority” making sure to really kill and bury the rumors.

But that seems to not have worked on fans as everyday new rumors come out about the interactions between all three parties of a possible love triangle on social media.

To Jenner, the internet may seem dramatic, but it honestly just raises questions that the public wants to know about. Things that celebrities won’t even respond to nor do they have to. At this point, we hope that the two parents can ultimately come back together, but it’s perfectly fine for them to be caring parents to Storm and live separate lives as well.

Spooky Season Traditions

Kristin Turner Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu We all have that one tradition that we do around Halloween time. Whether it be going on a haunted hayride, walking through a haunted house, or walking through a haunted corn maze.

I have been on a haunted hayride and walked through a haunted corn maze, which seem like the standard things to do to celebrate this wonderful holiday. Some things that I’ve always wanted to do was go to Kennywood theme park in October, go to Disney World for Halloween, or go to Universal Studios for Halloween.

Kennywood decorates their entire theme park for Halloween and the employees dress up as something scary and they scare their guests. They have fog all throughout the park, they put cobwebs in some places, and they put red food coloring in their fountain to make it look like blood.

Disney does about the same thing, only they make it bigger by doing a huge parade and they have the characters dress up for Halloween. Guests even go to the Haunted Mansion and the Tower of Terror a lot more to get into the spirit of Halloween.

Universal Studios does a massive celebration like Disney does. Every year, they have a thing called Halloween Horror Nights where the rides are decorated, they have loads of walkthrough mazes based off of movies and tv shows like “The Walking Dead”, all of the famous horror movies, and they even added a new one for “Stranger Things”.

Some general traditions could be going trick-or-treating, going to Halloween Parties, listening to Halloween music, making Halloween treats, or watching Halloween movies.

Every year, I always listen to Halloween music and watch scary movies even though it drives my grandmother crazy.

Whenever I’m at school, I always go to a Halloween party and they play a lot of spooky music. When I was at Edinboro, I went to a Halloween party for Chi Alpha and I really got into the music while enjoying a variety of delicious treats.

At Lock Haven, I went to one for New Life and it was super fun. When I was younger, I used to go trick-or-treating. There was this one house that I will never forget where there was this guy that dressed up as a gorilla and he would scare everyone that came up for candy.

I saw him and I told my mom to go and get the candy for me because I didn’t want to go anywhere near the guy giving out candy. My mom does and she’s laughing because I won’t go anywhere near the guy because I’m afraid of him.

As I got older though and started college, I wasn’t trick-ortreating as much anymore and there aren’t any places to trickor-treat in college. When I was home, I always got my grandmother’s leftover treats.

When my dad gave out candy, he’d always play Halloween music and sounds. He always had a habit of scaring the crap out of me with his evil laugh and the scary sounds tape that he used. Even though some things terrified me and some treats were bittersweet, it felt sacred to keep things going and I’m glad they do.

Anti-bucket list

Eric Sass Staff Writer exs8300@lockhaven.edu While there are so many exciting and daring things that can appeal to someone’s bucket list, here are ten things I wouldn’t want to experience, ever!

Elimination of print books: While the convenience of say movies can be appealing to watch without the need of a physical disc and the need of a video player, the same can’t be said about books entirely.

Holding that physical book in your hands, the sounds of flipping through the pages and even the smell all give me the feeling that just can’t be received from a digital perspective. The other issue being that extended periods of reading from a screen is rough on my eyes.

Being alone forever: We all need to have that time to ourselves every now and then, perhaps most commonly known as ‘me time.’ However, living through life being constantly isolated from other people sounds lonely, boring and sad.

Living in a dull climate: Going through life can be the greatest feeling in a place such as Florida during the bone chilling temperatures in areas farther north during the winter months, but to have heat that much of the year doesn’t seem like much of a variety of weather. The seasons are the greatest factor. It’s a special feeling to have distinct seasons and what comes along with that like the clouds and sun as well as precipitation. The Carolinas are a good example as their weather isn’t frigid long, but also doesn’t have extreme heat for a long duration.

Living in a major city: I’ll admit that it’s awesome and a great experience to be around many people and all of the attractions that the city life has to offer. On the other hand, I couldn’t enjoy staying in that kind of environment such as the noise that comes with it.

Stop taking chances: Nobody wants to be in the same rhythm every day of their life. Embracing new activities or reaching out of my comfort zone gives a special opportunity for excitement.

Attending a musical: From my viewpoint I don’t understand all the music being thrown into a story. Short stories such as a play or show are fine though.

Ride a roller coaster: I would like to experience a thrill ride but there are always risks that come with rides that travel fast and typically go quite high into the sky.

Skydiving: It would be a spectacular view from high above but with the thrill of being up there would really scare me due to the fact I can’t handle heights.

Smoking: While it may bring a sense of being cool or relieve stress for some, I personally can’t stand it for the most part.

Holding a snake: There’s practically no good that can come from this one!

Embracing forgiveness Brooke Holben Staff Writer beh968@lockhaven.edu Amber Guyger shot her neighbor, Botham Jean, when she entered his apartment thinking it was her own in Dallas, Texas on Sept 6, 2018.

Guyger saw Botham as a threat, when in fact she had made a common mistake of navigation, which ended in an uncommon result and more unusual end to her trial.

Guyger, the former 31-year-old police officer, was sentenced to ten years in prison. The family of the 26-year-old victim stood outside the courtroom after the trial and claimed the prosecutor had asked for a longer sentence.

They had asked initially for at least 28 years, which is how old Botham would be if he were here. I agree partially in the fact that ten years seems a little lenient with the committed crime, and it should have been at least half of how old Botham was at the time of his death. However, many are more concerned as to what went on inside the courtroom.

Botham’s younger brother, Brandt Jean, spoke directly to Guyger as he sat up in the stand. His family claims that Jean had been the one to be dealing with the situation the hardest, no longer

having his big brother around. He kept his heart and mind open, though, announcing to Guyger that he forgives her and said, “I love you as a person and I don’t wish anything bad on you.”

Hearing this coming from the younger brother of the man murdered only a year ago, everyone was shocked. What really stunned everyone, though, was his request afterwards to give Guyger a hug.

He requested it to the judge, and after permission, he and the woman whom killed his brother, met in the front of the courtroom. They embraced each other, and for a little while, all that could be heard in the room were quiet sobs. The two were hugging, crying, and in a way -I think- attempting to comfort each other.

This emotional scene had sent many in the courtroom shedding tears, including the judge, Tammy Kemp. After the trial, she hugged the Jean family members individually before making her way to Guyger. After giving her a bible, Kemp

hugged her as well.

It’s moments like these we should pay more attention to; not the fact that it was a female white ex-officer who shot a young black man, not the commotion it stirred up about race and color, not the debates it started on more police brutality, but moments in which we recognize each other as humans. As people.

Jean recognized Guyger as a human, as someone who makes mistakes, just like the rest of us. Yes, this was a bit of a big mistake, but that is what the punishment is for; it’s encouragement to not repeat those mistakes or make more, whether they’re conscious or unconsciously decided.

It took a lot of guts, a lot of soul, and a lot of heart for Brandt to push past the racial status that our world seems to live by now days, and to find space in his heart to forgive someone of doing such a thing. I’m sure his brother would be proud of his decision. In my opinion, many of us need to be a little more like Brandt Jean.

Steven Granich Associate Professor of Social Work and Counseling sgranich@lockhaven.edu There is a human side to immigration at the United States and Mexican border.

Thousands of migrants are crossing the border of the United States experiencing despair on their journey to our country, but still remaining hopeful upon their arrival. From my perspective, there is a humanitarian crisis on the border; many volunteer organizations provide for immigrants in the United States and Mexico.

During August 2019, for three days, I volunteered at the Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, Texas. When I first entered the respite center, I felt overwhelmed with hundreds of families sitting on chairs waiting to leave for their own families in the United States.

The Humanitarian Respite Center was run by the Catholic charities in McAllen, Texas. At the McAllen Detention Center, belts and shoe laces were taken from immigrants, and they were sleeping on the floor. Most of the immigrants coming to the respite center were leaving Honduras, Guatemala, or El Salvador.

They included children, infants, and pregnant women. Most immigrants stayed one or two days.

It was amazing to see the extensive help provided to immigrants and the kindness and respect shown toward them.

At the respite center, there was a place to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Various groups from the community brought in meals during the day.

In addition, there were facilities for showering. There was a call center where arrangements were made for the immigrants to travel by bus or plane to a member of their family in the United States. In addition, there was a clothing bank where immigrants received clothing and shoes.

Volunteers distributed various hygiene products. For the children, there was a large T.V. for them to watch children’s programs and arts and crafts activities to keep them occupied. If a family member was sick, the respite center provided medical volunteers daily to help the immigrants.

I listened to the immigrants in Spanish. Prior to coming to the respite center, the immigrants were in detention and sleeping on the floor at the detention center.

They said that they were in detention only for a couple of days. Before crossing the Rio Grande River, they traveled for weeks in order to reach the United States border.

Reasons for leaving their countries included being unable to make a living,

extortion, and violence. I listened to stories of immigrants being robbed of everything and paying coyotes (people who traffic immigrants across the border).

Many immigrants though were very happy to reach the United States where they believed they wouldn’t have to fear for their lives anymore. It was also evident that some of the immigrants were sick from their journeys. It was very fortunate that this respite center existed for the migrants; before there was no assistance for them.

Volunteering at the respite center impacted me by helping to understand the serious life-threatening issues immigrants experience and their need for humanitarian assistance.

This summer I also attended an international conference in England and met Dr. Eva Moya who is a social worker and distinguished scholar and advocate for immigrants. Dr. Eva Moya, from the University of Texas in El Paso, will speak at Price Auditorium on November 14, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at Lock Haven University. She has extensive experience in Mexico and the United States, advocating and doing research with immigrants.

Dr. Eva Moya has lived in El Paso, Texas and truly understands the issues around immigration in El Paso and the border town in Mexico, Ciudad Juarez.

The freshman forward notched his first career hat trick in the span of five minutes in the second half. The frenzy was capped off in the 56th with a 28 yard free kick which was perfectly weighted up and over the wall and dipped past a helpless goalkeeper.

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men's soccer team (4-6, 1-3 PSAC East) fell to East Stroudsburg University (5-2-2, 2-2 PSAC East), 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action.

The Warriors struck just 4:18 into the game on an Irvin Zuzic strike and were able to fend off the Haven's best effort and see out the full 90 minutes.

Andrea DiSomma (Lancaster, Pa./ Manheim Township) registered two of the eight Bald Eagles shots, one of which was on target. Alec Mapoy (Brick, N.J./Monsignor Donovan), Justin Douglas (Allentown, Pa./ Parkland) and Zane Puhala (Brockway, Pa./ Brockway Area) each posted one of the Haven's four shots on target.

Camden Cook (Rosedale, Md./High Point) made eight saves in his efforts to keep the Haven in the game.

"It was a tough road game." Said Coach Patrick Long, "Lots of credit to East Stroudsburg in their defensive shape. A lot of good learning opportunities to get better as we prepare for an important PSAC East game against Shepherd on Wednesday."

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s soccer (14-2, 1-4-1 PSACE) team fell on the road to East Stroudsburg University (6-2, 5-2 PSACE) 5-2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action on Sunday afternoon.

Leading the way for the offense was Marah Foltz (Mountville, Pa./ Hempfield High). Foltz finished the game with a goal and an assist for the Bald Eagles. She converted a penalty kick to score LHU’s second goal.

In the 22nd minute, Josie Swartz (Mifflintown, Pa./Junita) provided a spark, scoring for LHU after placing a shot past the ESU keeper. Assisting on the play was Foltz.

The two did all they could to lead the Bald Eagle offense. Foltz finished with a game high 12 shots and 10 on goal. Swartz finished with 4 shots and all 4 on goal.

Turning in a strong midfield performance was Erika Landis (Watsontown, Pa./ Warrior Run) who looked to jump start play for LHU creating a number of chances going forward.

LHU goalkeeper Karly Trillhaase (Eatontown, Ny./ Monmouth Regional) finished the game with 8 saves.

Next Up: LHU will return home on Wednesday, October 9 against Shepherd at 7:00 p.m. at Hubert Jack Stadium.

Next Up: The Bald eagles will return home on Wednesday, October 9th to face the Golden Bears of Kutztown University. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.

Judy’s goal, strong second half lift LHU over La Salle Doug Spatafore

PHILADELPHIA – Tia Judy (East Prospect, Pa./Homeschooled) scored early in the second half and it proved to be difference in the outcome, as the Lock Haven University field hockey team (5-6, 3-1 A-10) downed La Salle (5-6, 2-1 A-10), 1-0, for an important Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) road win.

With the win, the Bald Eagles improved to 3-1 in A-10 action and it marked the first conference loss of the season for host-La Salle.

Overall, it was another brilliant defensive effort from LHU which paved the way for the shutout-win. Leading the way was goalkeeper Joaquina Orlandini (Concordia, Entre Rios, Argentina/San Antonio School) who made three big saves to preserve the clean sheet.

Despite three La Salle first-half shots, the two teams were deadlocked in a scoreless draw at halftime.

The difference was the second half of the match as the LHU offense surged and got rolling early in the third quarter, and the energized pressure put the Bald Eagles on the scoreboard minutes into the second half, thanks to a Judy-goal in the 34th minute.

Credit must be given to the Lock Haven defensive unit that shut the hosts down in the second half of play. Niamh Sexton (Fermoy, Ireland/Loreto Secondary School Fermoy) led the charge on defense.

Lock Haven will return home to host Virginia Commonwealth on Friday, October 11 at 3 p.m. LHU will host Lehigh on Sunday, October 13 at 1 p.m.
