President Robert Pignatello and Stephen Lee, the vice president of Enrollment Services and Student Affairs, announced early discussions about the usage and relocation of different student services to Bentley Hall and the PUB at the town hall meeting on Tuesday. In recent years, enrollment and student retention has been on a downward spiral, leaving LHU at a 60 percent retention rate. Pignatello said, “We[LHU] want to make sure we are paying as much attention upon student retention as we do for enrollment. “We invest a lot and we will invest more to recruit new students to come here, but we have to make sure that once they come here we hold onto them.” While these plans are in the early stages of discussion, student services could be centralized as part of efforts to improve enrollment and retention rates. Lee said, “If we recreated the PUB as a success center, the offices[TRIO, Counseling Center, and various tutoring centers] and others could potentially be housed in the PUB. “Students would have one place to go and it would be very easy for faculty and staff to know where to tell students to go if they have any problems that might impact their retention.”

Halloween is more Irish than St. Patrick’s Day. Halloween’s origins come from a Celtic festival for the dead called “Samhain.” Celts believed the ghosts of the dead roamed Earth on this holiday, so people would dress in costumes and leave “treats” out on their front doors to appease the roaming spirits. Granted, the Celts were not solely based in Ireland when these customs started taking shape around the first century B.C., but as will be talked about more in a later section, the Irish Celts were the ones who invented the jack-o’-lantern. This Halloween prototype was eventually disrupted and adapted by Christian missionaries into celebrations closer to what we celebrate today, including partly by the not-Irish St. Patrick, whose work was later mostly recognized by Americans.

‘Jesus Is King’ or Jesus is Kanye?
Tiana Gair A&E Editor teg5895@lockhaven.edu Kanye West’s long-awaited ninth studio album was finally released this past Friday, October 25, 2019 titled ‘Jesus is King.’ The album was originally intended to be released in September, so when Kanye posted to Twitter on Oct. 24 that he was going to be dropping the album at midnight, fans were skeptical. They were right in doing so—the rapper tweeted out around 1 a.m. on Oct. 25, “To my fans; Thank you for being so loyal & patient; We are specifically fixing mixes on ‘Everything We Need’ ‘Follow God’ & ‘Water’; We not going to sleep until this album is out!” As the title suggests, the album is influenced heavily by Christianity throughout, evident in the lyrical themes, the song titles, the sometimes-present choir, and the even the instruments used. Within the last few years, Kanye has re-embraced the Christian faith. The intro ‘Every Hour’ starts the album off strong, led by Kanye’s Sunday Service choir. The song is lively and spirited, yet it set a tone that doesn’t match the
rest of the songs that come after. Throw away songs like ‘Closed on Sunday’ mess up the flow of the album in my opinion. The line “Closed on Sunday, you’re my Chick-fil-A,” made me skip to the next song with a face of disgust. The song ‘Everything We Need’ is not only less than two minutes in length, but it’s also wildly forgettable. ‘Jesus Is Lord,’ the outro of the album, is comprised of only three statements sung over and over across a 49 second span. The rest of the album simply wasn’t up to par of what I expected: something great. Kanye’s history of creating ground-breaking albums such as ‘808s and Heartbreak’ and ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ had me more than excited for this release. All of the additional time he spent on ‘Jesus is King’ amplified the hype. Overall, I feel as though the album was thrown together without much thought put into the flow of the album.

The movie “Slender Man” is about a group of friends who are fascinated by the urban legend of Slender Man. They attempt to prove that he doesn’t exist until one of them goes missing and they start to regret it when Slender Man goes after all of them. The cast consists of Joey King, Julia Goldani Telles, Jaz Sinclair, Annalise Basso, Alex Fitzalan, Taylor Richardson, and Javier Botet and directed by Sylvain White. It came out August 10, 2018. I thought the actors did an awesome job of playing the characters because I could sense their fear when either the Slender Man showed up or when they were watching videos of the other victims that were taken by the Slender Man. I, myself, wasn’t too into the movie because I’ve seen movies like this before and I was a little bored with it. It made me think of the urban legend of Bloody Mary when the group of friends were trying to summon the Slender Man, only a little differently than summoning Bloody Mary. In “Slender Man,” the group of friends watched a video to summon the Slender Man. In the legend of Bloody Mary, you look into the mirror and say her name three times while spinning around.
The movie was a little creepy in some parts but I’ve seen satanic movies like this one before so I’m used to seeing jump-scares like the ones in this movie. I’ve seen movies like “The Exorcist” and“The Rite” and played all five of the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” games. I would not suggest watching this movie at night because of the jump-scares and the creepy witchcraft in it. I would watch movies like this during the day so it is less scary. The movie “Slender Man” is based on a story in 2014 when two 12-year-old girls who lured one of their classmates into the woods and stabbed her. The girls later said they were just taking orders from Slender Man. Slender Man is a mythical creature who doesn’t have a face. He is very tall and thin, and wears a black suit and tie. According to the legend, he can stretch or shorten his arms at will and has tentacle-like appendages that come from his back. He lurks near forests and absorbs, kills or carries off his victims. On some occasions, he targets children.

Halloween candy favorites
Kristin Turner Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu Now that Halloween is upon us, it’s time to talk about the one thing that gets us excited for Halloween besides getting costumes, going to parties, and scaring the daylights out of somebody. It’s time to talk about candy! In 2019, the top 10 Halloween candies are: Skittles Reese’s Cups M&M’s Snickers Starburst Candy Corn Hot Tamales Tootsie Pops Sour Patch Kids Hershey Bars I personally don’t have too much of a favorite except for not liking anything hot or with caramel. I love almost anything with chocolate and have loved anything sour for as long as I can remember. I’m talking about Hershey bars, Three Musketeers, Warheads, Lemonheads, Crunch bars, sour patch kids, Double Bubble gum, and Tootsie Rolls. There’s a big debate about candy corn lately that I keep seeing on Facebook and I actually like candy corn in my opinion but not everyone likes candy corn. I especially like the pumpkin ones and the ones with chocolate in them. For twizzlers though, it depends on the flavor. I personally like the chocolate ones but I see other flavors when I go to the fair in my hometown of Clearfield. I see flavors like green apple, root beer, bubble gum, grape, and orange. I’m surprised that I’m not seeing any jelly beans out there be-
cause I only prefer the Jelly Belly brand of jelly beans because they have so many different flavors. Some that are out of this world and some that really disgusting. Some of my favorite flavors of jellybeans are buttered popcorn, bubble gum, cotton candy, and sour apple. There’s also disgusting ones like black licorice, cinnamon, and the bean boozled ones like skunk, vomit, boogers, dog food, rotten egg, and moldy cheese. I played the bean boozled game at my home church and my cousin landed on a black one and he picked me to eat it. I had hoped that it was black licorice so that the taste wouldn’t stay very long, but boy was I wrong. It was the skunk one and as soon as I got home, I was brushing my teeth until the taste was completely out of my mouth. As good as candy is on Halloween, there are people who can’t have candy because of either allergies or other medical issues. I have a friend back home who can’t have Skittles, M&M’s, jelly beans or anything with color in it because of her allergy to color dyes. She can’t even have colored gum or colored frosting. I also have another friend who can’t have anything with peanuts in it because he has a peanut allergy. Allergies and diabetes certainly are hard for some people to enjoy getting candy on Halloween.

Here’s some ideas that are sure to spark your interest. Miss Trunchbull and Matilda from “Matilda”: For the bookworms out there who also want to add a touch of comedy with a mean school principal by your side, this is the costume for you! A fortune teller: A great way to tell your friends or strangers who come up to you their future whether you’re serious or want to be sarcastic with your thoughts is to act the part by dressing up in this cool outfit. Yes, there’s even a slot cut-out where you would put the money. Elliott, Gertie, and a tiny E.T. This one is special as you have this classic movie where you could use a child or whatever you can come up with to be the alien. This will work for most of the population as you don’t need to be a child to play these characters. Bat: If you have an old umbrella, could work as the wings or simply using folded up paper. Finally, attach that to the underarms and sides of a hoodie. Miss Universe: Sure a traditional dress works for a pageant but why not attach planets to a dress to show you are really out of this world in beauty. Arthur: Anyone can be arthur from this old traditional show and it’s a good chance to score big time cool points with your friends while being a kid at heart at the same time. Smart Cookie: You won’t be asked to show your diploma when you show off this yummy costume. Just add your favorite cookies to
you and there you go! Nerd: Throw on suspenders, add tape to your thick glasses and hold on to a journal. Now you’re nerdy. Sia: So for a cheap thrill: You only need to buy the wig for this costume. Have someone else dress up as Maddie Ziegler to be a great pair. Deer: Make any brown dress into something everyone will fawn over. Then add fur, a headband, and face paint. Jessie: With a recent addition to the Toy Story movie series, Jessie riding Bullseye would get people talking about creativity and originality. Miss Frizzle: If you want to dress as a teacher, a good choice would be Miss Frizzle from the television series, The Magic School Bus. Social Butterfly: Show off you social side personality to the world with this unique idea! So these costumes are sure to get the ghosts and goblins talking for long after Halloween. Remember to stay safe during the late evening and night by wearing at least some reflective gear and/or clothing and most of all, enjoy the day/night!

Even as a kid, I had never liked Halloween. At all. I did not like scary movies and I hated to dress up. The best part of Halloween—besides the candy—is how creative people can get with their costumes. The worst part? How seriously some people take it.
Leutner was stabbed 19 times by her friends, who left her to die. Five years later, Leutner is still trying to rebuild her life. This story is so unbelievable to me because of their age. How did a fictional character influence 12-year-old girls to that extent?
After researching the 2014 ‘Slender Man’ and Payton Leutner case, I realized how problematic some of Halloween’s most glorified villains can be, especially to impressionable youth.
I am all for people enjoying a good story, scary or not. However, to what extent do we monitor what children intake?
The situation with ‘Slender Man’ and Leutner involves the then 12-year old victim being stabbed multiple times by her friends because they believed it would please ‘Slender Man.’ Her friends, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, were also 12 years old at the time. They originally planned to kill Leutner in her sleep at a birthday sleepover for Geyser, but as the night went on, the plan shifted to kill her the next day at the park.

I think that a line needs to be drawn, but that line becomes blurred when parents simply aren’t aware of what they’re children are consuming. It’s not even their fault; kids will find a way to see what they want no matter what. I believe, overall, that villains that crave human sacrifices and admire suicide among other horrible acts needs to be strictly prohibited on the internet. Obviously, it can be extremely damaging.

How old is too old to trick or treat? The age old question [no pun intended]. In some U.S. cities this is pretty serious question with a definite answer. For instance in Chesapeake, Virginia it is illegal for anyone over the age of 12 to be out trick-or-treating. In Charleston the legal limit for trick or treats is 16. However if there is no law in place by city, county, or state this becomes a pretty subjective topic. A 2017 Today Parents Survey found that the preteen years is popular age rage to outgrow trick or treat is the preteen years with an average of 12-13. Nevertheless, there are explanations besides childhood wonder to be out trick or treating. For instance, last year Alicia Plumer post about her 21 year-old autistic son would be going around trick or treating. Plumer aimed awareness on how blue pumpkins could indicate that a trick or treater has Autism, and while may have the body of an adult, still have a youthful love of Halloween. At the end of it all, people yearly buy candy with the sole intent of giving it out. Why deprive someone who puts in the effort, especially if he or she is dressed up, the pleasure of simple candy?

Laurel Moyer led the way for the Lock Haven University women’s cross country team at the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships, hosted by Bloomsburg University.
Aaron Pfeil led the Lock Haven University men’s cross country team to a runner-up team finish at the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships, hosted by Bloomsburg University.
Moyer was third overall, marking the highest individual effort by a Bald Eagles since 1981 when Dawn Eid won the individual title.
Pfeil’s fourth-place outing was the highest individual Lock Haven finish for The Haven men since an Addison Monroe win in 2016.
Overall, Moyer placed third out of 179 after covering the 6K course in 22.12.5. She finished just behind a 1-2 Edinboro finish.
Pfeil covered the 8K course in 25:36.6 and was fourth of 139 total runners.
Men’s Soccer secures a wild road win over Shepherd Adam Kaylor Graduate Assistant ank4635@lockhaven.edu SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –The Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (8-8, 5-5 PSACE) travelled to West Virginia and toppled Shepherd University (2-13-1, 0-9-1 PSACE), 4-3, in a frenzied Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East matchup on Wednesday afternoon. With Lock Haven’s playoff hopes in the balance, Ivo Klaric (Vienna, Austria/University of Vienna) struck just five minutes into the match to push the Haven to the lead. In the 29th minute, Klaric doubled the Bald Eagles advantage when he collected a pass from Andrea DiSomma (Lancaster, Pa./ Manheim Township) and jumped the Haven to a 2-0 lead. Shepherd responded quickly in the 38th and 43rd minute to tie the game at 2-2 and setup a thrilling second half. The Bald Eagles started the second half even quicker than the first when Kemali Green (Philadelphia/ YSC Academy) nodded home a corner kick from Beckham Sibiski (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown). The Golden Rams grabbed one back in the 51st minute to tie the game at 3-3 before late game heroics from Brian Flatter (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) gave the Haven the final clinching goal at 4-3. Leading the Haven attack was Klaric who finished with two goals. DiSomma notched two assists on both Klaric goals and Sibiski tallied an assist on a corner kick. Flatter fired off two shots on goal, including the game-winning goal. Camden Cook (Rosedale, Md./High Point) made four big save in the highscoring affair to help preserve the Haven advantage and seal the victory to push the Bald Eagles to a .500 record on the year.

The weekly show, presented by the Bear Country Sports Network, is set for Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m. at Haywood’s on the Green in Mill Hall. Tonight’s guests will include head field hockey coach Pat Rudy, head football coach Dave Taynor, and head men’s wrestling coach Scott Moore. Make sure to be there at Haywood’s tonight for a chance to win a $20 gift card from Haywood’s and/or other fun LHU items. LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – For the first time in the 2019-20 season, the Lock Haven University swimming team competed at home and the Bald Eagles turned in a number of notable individual efforts, but visiting Kutztown (2-2) slipped by LHU, 130106. Leading the way for Lock Haven was Madison Griffin (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone), Kristin Allen (Willow Street, Pa./ Lampeter-Strasburg) and Mikaela Clemson (Albury, Austrailia/ Albury). Both Griffin and Clemson posted victories, and Allen recorded a pair of strong early-season swims in the butterfly events. Another strong individual Haven performance came from Lauren Mummert (York, Pa./Northeastern), who won the 500yard freestyle with a solid time of 5:43.60, well under her seed time. Lily Arledge (Richwood, Ohio/River Valley) also did well for Lock Haven. Griffin won the 100-backstroke with a time of 1:04.78 and earned the top point-scoring spot in the 200-IM with a time of 2:31.72. Clemson was first in the 50-freestyle event with a time of 26.27 and she was second in the 100-free with a time of 58.33, as she shined in back-to-back events. 100-butterfly (1:06.31), as she pushed toward a conference championship qualifying mark in both with strong early-season marks. Arledge was tough in the 200-IM after she place second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:17.26. This marked the first home meet of the season and therefore also marked the first ever home meet for newly appointed head coach Brian Hein. Hein, who was named the head coach just before the start of the season on September 30, picked up his first win at LHU last weekend after the Bald Eagles posted an impressive dual-win on the road at Millersville. Last weekend’s (Oct. 19) win, Lock Haven’s first dual win of the 2019-20 season, snapped a five-meet losing streak to the Marauders and marked LHU’s first win over Millersville since November 2012. Today’s meet with Kutztown marked the first of the three straight competitions at home for Lock Haven. The Bald Eagles are now 1-1 in dual action. LHU will return to action on Saturday, November 9 in dual action vs. California (Pa.), before hosting East Stroudsburg on Saturday, November 16.
