NEWS Sept. 19, 2019 Chinese Moon Festival

Managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu The Asian Student Association (ASA) held their annual Chinese Moon Festival on Friday, Sept. 13 in the international dorm hall, Woolridge. Students had the opportunity to play a traditional Chinese dice game called Bo Bing to win prizes from Chinese candies to ancient chinese good luck coins.

In the chinese culture, the moon festival is actually called the Mid-Autumn Festival. The festival got its American name because of the celebration’s association with the full moon on this night, as well as the traditions of moon worship and moon viewing.

The Moon Festival has been celebrated since the Shang dynasty 1600–1046 B.C., which makes it a celebration that is over 3,000 years old. Along with worshiping the moon, the festival celebrates the gathering of family and friends, giving thanks for the harvest, and praying for family and good fortune.

Shelby Craig, a secondary math and special education major and the ASA president, said, “[This event] is a way for us to express chinese culture.” The ASA uses events like the Chinese Moon Festival to spread and share Asian culture on LHU and making the campus more cultural and inclusive. Be on the lookout for their other events this semester.

Constitution Day: reading of the Constitution Brooke Holden Staff Writer

beh968@lockhaven.edu Tuesday, September 17, 2019 marked the 232nd anniversary of the day our founding fathers had signed the U.S. Constitution. Dr. Stanley Berard hosted a reading of the constitution to celebrate the occasion.

He welcomed the students, former students, and co-faculty that were attending the reading before beginning right away. Starting with the preamble, his tone brought the constitution to life for the audience. He had announced beforehand that a discussion could take place at the end, but little to no comments would be made during the reading.

Upon moving onto the seven articles, Berard invited the audience to participate in reading with him and a few others who had volunteered before the start. Jessica Cain, Mariia Gorbenko, Maia Mash, Noah Matthew, Jeffery Sawyer, and Dr. Sharon Stringer had all volunteered to read, and did so, pride weaved into their tone. As they read through the

articles and amendments, they had also included the 18th, which had been repealed in 1933 by the newly ratified the 21st amendment.

After the reading, Berard had thanked everyone for coming and had opened up the floor to general discussion of the document. Sawyer, a volunteer reader, immediately engaged in discussion, showing his knowledge of the Constitution and its many parts. They spoke of how different people interpreted the document, and how it affects us (Americans) still today as a whole.

Through the reading, Berard and his audience took pride in their country, taking a moment to celebrate this day. Coming together to show their support towards their country in working together to read through the extensive document showed true teamwork and unity. That united teamwork put the “United” in “Constitution of the United States of America.”

“Overcomer” is a real inspiration Kristin Turner Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu “Overcomer” is a wonderful film about a troubled teen girl with asthma who tries out for the cross-country team at her high school. Her coach isn’t too keen on her joining because no one else tried out, she has asthma, and can’t deal with anymore stress as he was already dealing with so much like losing his basketball team over some surprising and unexpected news.

The girl’s coach eventually decided to be her coach after some good convincing and a little outsider advice. He meets a new-found friend in the hospital, who has a shocking past, that will help the girl push beyond her limits and overcome her asthma.

I was really engaged with the movie since I also live with asthma. I could understand and relate a lot to her situation. Additionally, I have a troubled past, but not as bad as hers; I also come from a special needs family.

Both of my parents have learning disabilities and both my sister and my mother have autism. My sister also has Asperger’s syndrome. I was the only one in my household that didn’t have a mental problem leaving me the odd man out and because of their disabilities, neither of my parents knew how to raise children, which gave my grandmother a reason to help out.

It is because of her that I’ve grown stronger throughout my life due to her helpful life lessons, words of wisdom, and religious faith. Her faith has really rubbed off on me over the years making me want to be a born-again Christian.

Now, I am a strong Christian because I know what my values are and where to find my strength. I am blessed to say that I find my strength in the bible, listening to worship songs, and reflecting on how far I’ve come. “Overcomer” will definitely make you feel a sense of getting in touch with yourself and learning what’s more important in life. It wants to let people know that it’s okay to challenge yourself because you could learn something very valuable.

With the cast of Alex Kendrick, Aryn Wright-Thompson, Cameron Arnett, Priscilla C. Shirer, Ben Davies, and Denise Armstrong, you can tell this movie has a special message for its audience besides defying statistics and following your dreams.

I thought the actors did an amazing job of playing the characters because they really put out a powerful

story of taking whatever any mental, emotional, or physical issues you may have. They also showed how to expand your restrictions because of the passion you exhibit that overcomes your dysfunctionality.

It teaches young, impressionable audiences that moving on from the negative and focusing on the positive, as well as ways to build-up your self-esteem.

I know that Alex Kendrick has been in a few different Christian movies because his reputation precedes him.

This movie isn’t far off from some of their ideals.

This is probably one of the reasons why it can be found on Pureflix. Now, this very similar to Netflix except it only showcases Christian movies, which is perfect for those who feel that the majority of the movies that get produced these days are below their ideals.

Kiara Carson Managing Editior knc9459@lockhaven.edu Post Malone is a visionary. He sees the world through his eyes and tells his perspective through his art. Music is his way of expressing what he notices through his lifestyle and work.

His new album, “Hollywood’s Bleeding” is his insight on what Hollywood can really be like and what fame can do to alter your life.

Most of his songs are a bit more melancholy than they were before which gives the indication that Hollywood isn’t as great as everyone thinks it is. It seems as though it really takes a toll on Malone and his personal life with friends and maybe even family.

One of his songs is even called “Enemies” where he talks about how he used to have a lot of friends, but they switched up and turned their back on him making them his enemies. Hollywood has shifted so much for him which is to be expected because everyone knows that once you become famous, you become the center of attention and it gets tiring.

It’s not all doom and gloom though,

as some of his songs feature a romanticized tune like “Circles,” “Staring at the Sun,” and the infamous “Sunflower” song from the new animated Spiderman movie. These are the cutest, most catchy, sing-a-longs Malone has produced. The beats and tempos make everything better.

His features on his tracks are very diverse this time around as well. DaBaby, Future, Halsey, Meek Mill, Lil Baby, Travis Scott, SZA, Swae Lee, Young Thug, and even legend Ozzy Osbourne all make an appearance on this album bringing more life to the music and showing the diversity of Hollywood.

It may be bleeding now, but it should be reformed once people listen to Malone’s album and realize that he speaks the truth!

Sept. 19, 2019 City Tour: Clearfield

Kristin Turner Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu My town of Clearfield is kind of nice, but there’s not that much to do around town that doesn’t involve spending money.

We have the theater in town that shows two movies at 7 and 9 each night except for when Avengers Endgame came out.

They only had time to feature one showing at 7 because it was a three hour movie.

We have the CAST building that puts on a variety of plays.

My grandmother and I saw “Mamma Mia” and a kids version of “Lion King.” My dad and I have seen “Rock of Ages.” I have seen “Grease” with my family.

We have the fair every year at the fairgrounds. We have gotten some awesome acts to play at the fair over the years.

We’ve had Big Time Rush, Jeff Dunham, Tenth Avenue North, Three Doors Down, A Day Awaits, Kane Brown, and Lady Antebellum. My Aunt Heather has even sung at the fair, in the parade, and at the Altoona Curve games.

We have a Fun Central where they have all kinds of arcade games like, a soft play gym, Laser Tag, and a pirate theme black light mini-golf.

We do have a library that I used to go to when I was a kid but I stopped when I got older because I was too busy to go to the library to read books.

We have an art gallery where they do drawing classes there and they once did an Irish Festival there that me and

my grandmother went to. It was fun because I am part Irish on both of my parents’ side of the family and I felt very in tune with my Irish side.

We have a Lock Haven campus in Clearfield, but they mostly offer classes for Nursing and Criminal Justice Majors.

I tried to take a math class there so that if I needed help, my grandmother could have a friend of hers help me, but they were not offering any math classes anymore.

Around town our mascot is the bison for the elementary, middle and high school. When I was in high school, I went to a few of the football games and we were a pretty good football team.

My grandparents used to own a furniture store in town called Rowles Family Furniture, but they sold it to the Country Butcher after they had a lack of business because of people shopping out of town instead of shopping locally for their furniture.

A lot of businesses and shops have come and gone out of Clearfield and it’s becoming more of a retirement town than a flourishing town. It may not be popular to visit and there might not be much for outsiders to do, but it’s still home to me and just perfect for small townspeople.

Netflix vs. Cable

Eric Sass Staff Writer exs8300@lockhaven.edu This is a new age generation of the way more and more people are getting their fix of a favorite television show or a movie. What is the way? Streaming services, the word itself sounds like multiple options and that’s pretty much what it is.

Many of us grew up in households where we most likely needed cable to watch TV or a movie player to be able to watch the stuff we purchased on discs.

Nowadays, it’s all gone practically digital and not to mention, content is now on demand even instantly in some cases.

Since the mid 2000’s, we were starting to see programs being available through the internet.

There are some of us, maybe even a lot still, who are used to the cable format and having the commercial breaks thrown in allowing things to stay the same in a more seemingly slower paced environment which is fine if you don’t mind traditional.

It also allows you to enjoy conversation with your family and friends during

those breaks in programming.

Now the most popular streaming service still, seems to be Netflix in general.

By April of this year, Netflix had over 148 million subscribers worldwide, being 60 million of those in the United States.

It features a whole list of original shows and movies on top of the plethora of movies and shows it offers.

Streaming services are very convenient however, keep in mind that an internet connection is required in general though most people don’t see an issue with this.

Now to the other side, Comcast is a close second to its rival AT&T cable company. Both still have over 20 million subscribers a piece.

Cable has had to keep up with the ever evolving world of streaming, so they’ve integrated on demand features into their services as well. Another side of cable is satellite TV. Two big names are DirecTv and Dish Network.

They are another alternative to a cable company but seem to have a big

deal on contract requirements. However, they are typically cheaper than cable at least in the short run. On days where the weather goes downhill there is that chance of your satellite being affected.

So why are many people switching over to a streaming service such as Netflix? Well on top of convenience is the fact that it can be significantly cheaper as compared to a traditional cable service.

There are also many other streaming services out there such as, Hulu, Amazon Prime and HBO Now. Even Disney is getting in on it very soon. However, try not to choose too many at once as the monthly fees can surprisingly add up.

Lastly, enjoy the extra time given on this newly found freedom of on demand services, no more commercials in many cases so, enjoy!

I need a mental health day

In today’s world with all the tragedy that we see in the news, our society has started to become more aware of mental illnesses.

We are beginning to understand the effects they can have on different people, in particular, on students.

Mental illness can be anything from anxiety to post traumatic stress disorder. About 19 percent of adults in America have reported having a mental health disorder. That is one in every five adults.

"It [dealing with mental illness] is like fighting a war with yourself that nobody knows about. Mental illness can make it difficult to function in day to day activities and people often assume that you are lazy,

when in reality you're not”, said Amanda Biddle, a psychology major.

Mental illness is a struggle that can hit at any time. The illness makes getting out of bed seem impossible. On days like that, it would be nice to just take a mental health day and rejuvenate from the stress of school. The problem is, mental health isn't widely recognized as a valid excuse to miss class.

Recently two states, Oregon and Utah, recognized the importance of mental health and started to make a change. Oregon passed HB2191, which recognized mental health as an excused absence under section 1 ORS 339.005. This change went into effect at

the beginning of this school year.

Utah passed a similar bill, HB2191, making a valid excuse include “an illness, which may be either mental or physical.” With government recognition like this, the stigma surrounding mental illness can start to disappear and more of the tragedies that we see in the news can be avoided.

Mental illness is a very serious issue that keeps getting ignored until we are forced to notice its effects when it is too late. Giving students the option of mental health days might not solve all the problems surrounding mental illness, but it is a step in the right direction.

Why new phones, why not new laptops?

Apple has recently come out with their newest phone, the iPhone 11 Pro and it is everything people have predicted it would look like. It has three cameras now instead of two making it potentially better, but how does it affect the quality of the picture? Also, it’s contrasted from its predecessor, the iPhone 11 which is also brand new, but it only has two cameras on the back of it. Does that mean the iPhone 11 Pro is so called “more professional” than the other one because it has an extra camera, making it even more expensive?

At this point, the new phones aren’t designed for the older generation. The income might be coming from the older generation, but that’s because the younger generation will keep asking for the newest technology just to be “too cool for school”.

They should stop making new phones and work on creating newer laptops instead. Laptops have more purpose value than phones and are used by a lot more people than just the new kids who want the newest gadgets for show. Necessity is key and the only purpose the iPhone 11 Pro gives is the ability

to take more amazing photos. So, if you’re not a photographer, don’t waste a whole lot of money for the same features any other iPhone can bring you.

The only reason I would have to get this phone is if my phone provider decided it was time for me to upgrade from my 7plus to the Pro. I wouldn’t even take the Pro; I’d chose the regular iPhone 11 because it’s not so complex looking as the other one and I can get it in purple if I really wanted to. It may seem cool now to have all these new phones, but laptops and their accessories should be the real market. At this point in time, no one is really using pen and paper unless it’s for small things, but even then, we can easily turn to our laptops and type everything up. Apple should be using their money and equipment to advance their MacBooks or even their iPads. It seems as though they take everything their original MacBook had and as they update it, they took its gadgets away to give it to the phones. Wrong business move, I think it’s about time for iPhones to take a break and let the MacBooks have their toys back.

Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Flatter had a huge game in the Bald Eagles win over the District of Columbia on Wednesday.

The senior midfielder provided the opening goal on a penalty kick in the eighth minute to surge the Haven in front.

Flatter also provided two assists in the Bald Eagles second half barrage of goals in a 5-1 win. Flatter currently sits second in the PSAC with three assists.

Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu For the second straight week, Laurel Moyer (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) of the regionally-ranked Lock Haven University women’s cross country team has been named the weekly Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week.

She turned in another stellar individual effort at the Kutztown University Division II/III Challenge.

Moyer finished second overall and was the top PSAC finisher in the 150-plus runner field. She covered the 6K course in 22:43.2 and helped LHU finish fourth in the team standings (4th of 13).

LHU Tennis returns, Bald Eagles hosts Lycoming Doug Spatafore

Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s tennis team made its official return today as the Bald Eagles hosted Lycoming College on a gorgeous late-summer afternoon in north-central Pennsylvania.

Today mark the first home varsity women’s tennis match since October 3, 1992, as the match served as the official return of LHU women’s tennis. It was announced back in August 2018 that tennis was returning to The Haven.

Lycoming picked up a 7-0 win today and improved to 1-1 on the season. The Warriors lost to Elizabethtown, 8-1, yesterday in Lyco’s home-opener. Lock Haven is now 0-1.

“This was obviously a special day for the program and I’m proud of how our kids battled against a strong opponent,” said head coach John Machak, a central-Pennsylvania native. “It felt great to compete and get that first match behind us. I’m excited about the future of this program.”

At No. 1 doubles LHU’s Delani Wolever (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) and Hailey Risley (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail) fell to Hannah Summerson and Aubrey Chambers, 8-1. At No. 2 doubles, Lycoming’s Wiliana Lundy and Madie Heller won 8-0.

At No. 1 singles, Summerson, a returning All-Conference selection, for Lycoming, downed Wolever, 6-0, 6-0.

Risley played well at No. 2 singles for the Bald Eagles and came up just short in the first set, a set that ended in a tiebreaker. Lycoming’s Aubrey Chambers won the first set 7-6, thanks to a 7-3 win in the tiebreak. Chambers took the second set, 6-0.

After dropping the first set, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, Jayna Brodnicki (Morris, Pa./North Penn-Liberty) bounced back with a strong second set. She won five games, but was edged out 7-5.

Victoria Bensinger (Northampton, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) and Kayla Mushala (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) represented Lock Haven at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively today.

Todays’ match with Lycoming marked the first of two home dates during the fall portion of the season. LHU will also host Penn College on Homecoming Saturday (September 28) at 1 p.m.

Machak, who was selected as the head coach February 4, 2019, has strong ties to area tennis and he will look to rebuild the program from the ground up starting this fall. Prior to LHU, Machak spent three years coaching at the NCAA Division III

level at Penn College in Williamsport. He served as the head coach for both the men’s and women’s programs.

Machak’s roster currently features seven student-athletes including several local products.

During the fall, the Bald Eagles will also play at the Bloomsburg Invitational (September 21-22) and LHU will travel to Misericordia on October 2. Lock Haven will round out the fall season at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Singles & Doubles Championships, hosted by Bloomsburg on October 5-7.

Historically, LHU has had success on the courts. The Bald Eagles went undefeated during the 1973 and 1983 season and hold over 100 total victories. Lock Haven has also crowned seven individual conference champions.

UP NEXT: LHU will head to the Bloomsburg University Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, September 21-22.

App State slips by Haven in shootout Doug Spatafore

Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – After 80 minutes of double-overtime action, the Lock Haven University field hockey team (2-4) was edged out, 1-0, today at home in a thrilling shootout by Appalachian State (6-0).

With the narrow non-conference win, App State improved to 6-0, while Lock Haven moved to 2-4 overall.

After 60 minutes of regulation the two teams were deadlocked at 0-0, and after two periods and 20 total minutes of overtime, the contest remained scoreless.

The outcome of the match was decided on the stick of Friederike Stegen who converted App State’s fourth shootout attempt. Up until that point, it was the two goalkeepers, who kept the shootout deadlocked at 0-0, but Stegen scored and it provided the game-winning mark for the visitors.

LHU goalie Joaquina Orlandini (Concordi, Entre Rios, Argentina/San Antonio School) was outstanding throughout and her exceptional play carried over into extra time and the shootout. She made a brilliant diving stop and a lunging kick-save during the shootout to keep the Bald Eagles in the match. Orlandini finished with five saves in 80 total minutes of play.

App State goalkeeper Rachel Gaines made seven saves as Lock Haven forced the attack and kept the offensive pressure on.

The freshmen duo of Amy Stevens (Castle Creek, N.Y./Whitney Point) and Jazmin Palma (Entre Rios Province, Argentina./Colegio Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) did all they could to spark the attack.

Stevens had a game-high five shots and Palma registered four.

LHU held a slight 11-10 advantage in shots and penalty corners were even at 6-6.

The Bald Eagle defense was once again tough at home and continued to limit the opposition to only a few strong scoring opportunities. Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago/Bishop Anstey East) turned in a strong effort for The Haven. The standout’s two-way play was impressive as she helped control the midfield play and aided LHU’s outstanding defensive hold on the game.

Lock Haven will return to action on Sunday, September 22 vs.

Davidson in the Bald Eagles 2019 A-10 opener.

The Bald Eagles were picked fifth in the A-10 Preseason Coaches’ poll, released August 19. Saint Joseph’s, the defending A-10 champions, received eight of nine first-place votes and was picked as

the preseason-favorite. Virginia Commonwealth checked in at No. 2 and Massachusetts rounded out the top-three teams. Richmond checked in at No. 4, one spot ahead of the Bald Eagles, who were slotted in the No. 5 spot. Lock Haven was followed by No. 6 La Salle, No. 7 Saint Francis, No. 8 Davidson and No. 9 Saint Louis.

Last season, the Bald Eagles were 3-5 in A-10 action, thanks to wins over Davidson, Saint Louis and La Salle. All three conference wins came by way of a shutout and LHU outscored their conference foes 9-0 in those three games.
