Police Reports

11/02/19 Off Campus Assisted LHPD with a DUI traffic stop. Requested the PBT for testing.

11/02/19 Campus Village Received a report of a person believed to be on campus who was possibly going to harm themselves.

Officer located individual at Campus Village and concluded they were okay. This individual had been banned from campus until 5/2020 due to non-criminal issues. Copy of trespass letter provided to this individual in person by an officer.

11/02/19 Stern Athletic Complex Officers were enroute to check fields when dispatch notifed a vehicle in area possibly spotlighting. Officers arrived and no vehicles were located in the area. No damage to University owned fields.

11/02/19 Smith Hall A report of an odor of marijuana located on the 2nd floor. Officer responded and was unable to detect any odor of marijuana.

11/02/19 Campus Village Alarm-False Fire Room 316. Officer responded and at the time of the alarm no one was in the room. No fire or smoke detected. The steam from the shower was believed to have caused this alarm. Resident of room did not turn exhaust fan on. Officer did advice student to be sure to keep the exhaust fan on while showering.

11/03/19 Smith Hall Report of an odor of marijuana coming from the 2nd floor men’s restroom. Officer arrived and found the odor was caused by someone smoking a cigar.

11/03/19 Woolridge Hall Report of an odor of marijuana coming from the area of G11. Officers tried to locate odor. Unfounded.

11/03/19 Off Campus Assisted LHPD with a searching for 2 male individuals and a vehicle. Unsuccessful.

11/03/19 Campus Village Received a phone call regarding a sick male outside of building. Officer responded and located male. The 21 year old male admitted to drinking too much the night before. Male cleaned up the sidewalk and was cleared.

11/03/19 Off Campus Assist LHPD with a traffic stop for driving on the wrong side of the roadway.

11/04/19 Off Campus Received a phone call that an incident occurred within the city limits on Friday night or Saturday morning. Referred to Lock Haven Police Department.

11/04/19 Woolridge Hall Received a report of an odor of marijuana in hallway.

Officer responded and it was unfounded.

11/04/19 Walkway by Akeley Hall Employee fell on walking path beside Akeley Hall.

Employee declined emergency treatment. She was going to drive to State College for medical attention.

11/05/19 Susquehanna Ave. Traffic stop on vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit. Warning issued.

11/06/19 Susquehanna Ave. Traffic stop on vehicle that had frost and fog on window. Driver issued a warning.

11/06/19 Off Campus Received a report on a civil matter involving matters that occurred in Maryland. Incident referred to appropriate jurisdiction.

11/07/19 Zimmerli Officer noticed door propped open with chair. Officer check inside building and found 5 individuals playing basketball. 2 of them were juveniles. Additional investigation found individuals arriving in vehicles that parked in Area 16 a total of 11 individuals were in the gym and only 2 of them were students.

Referred to Student Life due to violation of building policy.

Nov. 14, 2019 LHU to celebrate 150 years Cassandra Keller & Tess English Managing Editor & Online Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu & tae7002@lockhaven.edu LHU will be hosting a year-long celebration as of Feb. 14, 2020 in honor of it’s charter date back in 1870. Now it is up to the students of LHU to make it even better.

Joby Topper, director of library and information services and co-chair of the LHU 150th Anniversary Planning Committee, said. “If students participate, then they can help us shape it [the anniversary celebration] and then it becomes more of an image of what you all want than what some grayhaired guy like me thinks you want.”

The committee has created a website where students can submit stories, memories, artifacts, and ideas for events to be apart of the celebration.

Elizabeth Arnold, executive director of strategic communications and the co-chair of the LHU 150th Anniversary Planning Committee, said. “These don’t have to be historical stories, we want to hear the stories that are shaping the university’s history now. Our students are the lifeblood of the university.” To share your stories and ideas go to lockhaven. edu/LHU150/.

The website also includes a list of major upcoming events in the coming celebration as well as a gallery of old photos dating back to shortly after the founding of LHU. Topper and Arnold hopes that the celebration will immerse students in LHU’s rich history beginning with the founding.

“The founding was so difficult it took seven years between the time the charter was approved and the time we actually opened our doors,” Topper said. While LHU got its charter in 1870, the school didn’t open its doors to students until 1877.

“Going from a normal school to a state teacher’s college to a state college and then to a university, have been really important steps in the history of the institution.”

Arnold said the anniversary celebration is an opportunity for current students to be apart of the university’s history.

James C. Reeser scholarship brunch Tiana Giar A&E Editor

teg5895@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University James C. Reeser Scholarship Brunch honored both donors and students on Oct. 20 in the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center (DACC). Not only is it an opportunity for donors to see the impact their donations have on students’ lives, but it is also a chance for students to thank donors for their commitment to helping them continue their success at LHU. Each year, two awards are presented to donors at the brunch: The Wagner Lock Haven University Achievement Award and the Philanthropy Award. This year’s recipients of the Wagner Award were Ralph and Linda Lehman. The Philanthropy Award recipients were Carl and Carol Watkins.

“It’s the sincere ‘thank yous’ from students and the joy on donors’ faces that truly makes this event one of our most special days on campus each year,” said Katelynn Hanna, director of annual giving and stewardship at LHU. “Our donors don’t give because they want the recognition, but this event is still the university’s way of recognizing them and telling them ‘thank you’ for playing such a pivotal role in student success at Lock Haven University.”

Alex Klucker, a wrestler here at LHU, is currently pursuing a master’s degree in business administration.

He is the recipient of the Craig and Marilyn Willis Family Scholarship and the PSECU Athlete Scholarship. He said, “I couldn’t be more thankful to be a part of Lock Haven Uni-

versity and to have this opportunity to meet my donors.”

Overall, the impact that giving and receiving scholarships is wide. In the 2018-19 school year, 472 scholarships were awarded to 443 students, totaling more than $693,000.

Buster the bunny is a Miniature Holland Lop full of personality. He belongs to Arianna Figured, a junior Early Childhood Education major.

Buster enjoys playing with Figured and giving her all the bunny cuddles!

He likes to eat veggies and plenty of hay. Figured and Buster were one of the first pairs to take part in the North Hall Pet Program last spring.

Buster is one sassy little guy!

His personality shows through his hops, funny faces and being a picky eater. He enjoys meeting new people and accepts all the attention he can get because he knows he just too darn cute. The thing he loves the most in this world is giving bunny kisses!

“Death of a Salesman” review Dr. Laxman D. Satya Professor of History lsatya@lockhaven.edu As the first snow of the season fell on our little town last night, Arthur Miller’s famous play opened on the LHU mainstage, November 7, 2019. Opening scene of the tired old stooping man entering a house holding bags in both hands, looks lifeless at first. But then, we see the main characters, Willy’s two sons Biff and Happy, and wife Linda waking up the stage to life. This is a generation crafted in the Great Depression of the 1920s in New York City. A cross-section of what actually happened to families across this country is captured thru this small four-member household. Willy’s over-expectation of himself and his son’s talents only drives him into greater and greater conflict with his elder son Biff, who at age 32 cannot hold a job and still lives at home. Daydreaming or rather, the ‘American Dream’ brings disaster after disaster to the relationship between father and sons, mother and father, children and parents. All this, while the family struggles to survive by trying to make the two ends meet. Willy drives an old beat up car that keeps breaking down, refrigerator in the house is worn out, the roof needs fixing, etc.

Troubles keep draining the meagre income of this run-down salesman and reduces him to seek assistance from neighbors and friends.

Financial woes are not the only problem of Willy, who sees his neighbors prosper. Linda, the goodly wife bears it all thru realty check and whole heartedly supports husband Willy, despite his infidelity with another ‘women’ in Boston. This was an age of social conservatism in American society, whereby patriarchy was the order of the day. This social depression combined with economic deprivation seals Willy’s fate. With his suicide, the American Dream becomes a Nightmare. The family is torn apart as Biff leaves for good and very few people actually show up for the salesman’s funeral. With him dies his sales philosophy of serving the people over profit. One can say, the reason why this play became so iconic in the history of American theatre, is its depiction of the society’s departure from the old ways into a new way of life. Measuring success and seeking happiness thru material wealth and prosperity.

This is a well-produced play. The stage space is quite efficiently utilized. Low, meandering and dark dim high-contrast lighting in the closing scene captures the entire mood on the stage dramatically. The melancholy that lingers like the ghost of Willy’s successful older brother uncle Ben, finally leads the

audience into the tragedy of the entire World War II generation.

The cast, character, and costume design are all quite well-done.

The onstage music is the only bit of disappointment. A drowning low melancholic background echo on the stage throughout the duration of the play, would have prepared the audience for the closing scene of suicide, funeral, and Linda’s lonely tearless presence. Nevertheless, the acting and direction shows the hard work and talents of LHU University Players. Keep up the good work.

Rumor has it that the Theatre Program is being shuttered.

Let’s hope it’s only a rumor. Because, over the years, our highly talented students have put out some great plays for the enjoyment of the University community. Through these plays, the theatre and art department teaches us to appreciate Humanities. It’ll be shame to see it go.

Tiana Gair A&E Editor teg5895@lockhaven.edu Rapper Drake got boo’d off stage this past weekend in Los Angeles, California at the Camp Flog Gnaw music festival. Photos, videos and tweets have flooded the internet in the days since defending Drake and calling the concert-goer’s ‘ungrateful,’ including multiple disappointed tweets from the festival’s founder and headliner, Tyler, the Creator.

No one expected that Drake would be the secret headliner, who was labeled “???” on the original flyer. There was speculation that it would be Frank Ocean, a close friend and frequent collaborator of Tyler, the Creator.

Other acts at the festival include Solange, Daniel Caesar, A$AP Rocky, DaBaby, Willow Smith, and more.

Drake draws a different crowd generally compared to the rest of the acts. He also has a different stage presence. He’s seen as mainstream and dominates the charts anytime he releases songs, albums, and even

features. There is speculation that this difference in audiences is what caused the boo-ing.

Drake exited the stage with an exceptional level of professionalism after getting booed, which is something most artists would not be able to do. However, he let off a little steam on his social media. He captioned an Instagram picture on Monday, Nov. 11, “Plot twist…just signed a 10 year residency at Camp Flog Gnaw sorry kids see you EVERY SINGLE YEAR till you are 30.”

Tyler, the Creator also spoke out about how his fans reacted to Drake. He tweeted out this past Monday, “I thought bringing out one of the biggest artist on the … planet to a music festival was fire! But a lil tone deaf knowing the specific crowd it drew.”

Eric Sass Staff Writer exs8300@lockhaven.edu Thanksgiving, a beautiful time to reflect on everything we’re thankful for in not just the past year, but well beyond that. Also a time to remember how it all started. We all know “The First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the Pilgrims.

While more modern celebrations of Thanksgiving still hold the same values, there are differences.

First Thanksgiving: Commonly called by the Americans as such, was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621. Presumably thanks were offered at that gathering. The first recorded religious Thanksgiving Day in Plymouth happened a few years later in 1623.

It was then, the colonists gave thanks to God for rain after a two-month drought. Interestingly, most of what we do know about the holiday comes from the diary of Plymouth, Massachusetts governor William Bradford.

Their meal consisted of deer, corn, shellfish, and roasted meat. They also played ball games, sang, and danced. It may be that one of a few days out of the year we know and love, but the true origins of the food-filled celebration remain a little mysterious-even to those of us who were taught the basic details in grade school.

Doing all those fun little projects in elementary school, such as making a costume along with the notes and cards of thanks, really showed me what the day was all about.

Current Thanksgiving: Declared a national holiday by Abraham Lincoln in the mid 1800s. Today, Thanksgiving consists of several different things. We may travel, possibly far distances. Watching television is fairly common, whether

it be the well known parades, a traditional movie, or a football game.

We also use this time to help out people who may not be as lucky as us. Volunteering to serve food at homeless shelters, donating to shelters, or participating in canned food drives are some simple things to make us feel extra special.

While shopping shouldn’t really be any part of the day itself, it has increasingly become more involved as stores have been opening part of the day. It’s been debated by many, including myself, that this day should be reserved for real family time.

A cool and unique thing we still do today is the breaking of the turkey’s wishbone. It’s thought where two people make a wish and then whoever ends up with the bigger piece will get their wish granted. This tradition made its way to England in the 16th century. From there it came over to the US with the settlers during the Colonial era.

Holiday transitions: too fast or too slow?

Krissy Turner Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu Christmas is growing closer and closer every day and we should be starting to transition from Halloween to Thanksgiving, and then to Christmas. Instead, the transition into Christmas is going too fast in my opinion.

The Hallmark channels have started showing Christmas movies since before Halloween as well as the Lifetime channel ,and Starbucks brought out their Christmas stuff last week.

Stores have even put out their Christmas products as well, and I do not see why we all cannot take one holiday at a time. It seems like we forget about Thanksgiving altogether by doing more for Christmas than we do for the holiday.

When I go home for Thanksgiving break, my grandmother always has me help her get the Christmas decorations down from the attic and we decorate the house for Christmas even when it’s so close to Thanksgiving.

Starbucks has already started selling their Christmas drinks like peppermint hot chocolate, peppermint coffee or a white chocolate mocha Frappuccino. They also have Christmas cups and snacks like salted peppermint bark, chocolate cranberries and Christmas cookies.

Some channels on TV have started to show Christmas movies like both channels, Lifetime and UPtv. Freeform usually starts programming on Dec. 1 up until Christmas Day. TBS shows Christmas movies as well. I know every year they show the movie “A Christmas Movie” all day on Christmas Day. QVC has started showing stuff to buy for Christmas as well.

With the pressure from family and friends to celebrate winter holidays like Christmas or Hanukkah with the perfect gifts, the unofficial holiday promotes a mob mentality, creates unsafe shopping risks like injury and sometimes death, and is completely outdated with the rise of “Cyber Monday” sales.

According to a 2008 NY Daily News article, “Worker dies at Long Island after being trampled Black Friday stampede” shoppers were so ready to get in on Black Friday, they took the hinges off the doors and flooded into the store.

The customers ended up killing Jdimytai Damour in their frenzy. 2008 was over a decade ago, but it is an exemplary report of how the Black Friday crowds get into a ‘“retail rage”.

The chaos continues every year, in fact there is a whole website dedicated to it called www.blackfridaydeathcount.com. The site tracks not only fatalities of the holiday, but also the injuries dating back to 2006. In 2018 the official list has one death and

seven injuries. Keep in mind these are just the reported citing of violence, not everyone gets to tell his or her story or have it told.

The next reason Black Friday is not-so-great is that all the hassle of going out and pillaging for great deals feels obsolete if consumers consider the power of online shopping.

Some stores, like Amazon, Best Buy, and Target, hold an online version of Black Friday called Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday sales are just as good as Black Friday sales without all the hassle. Bargain shopping from the comfort of your own home without the risk of rude shoppers, long lines, and sometimes dangerous situations.

It is also important to note that other stores like Hot Topic will have their Black Friday sales available online, as to keep with the trend of shopping the day after Thanksgiving.

Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Senior midfielder Ivo Klaric of the Lock Haven University men’s soccer team was named this week’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Athlete of the Week Klaric came up huge in two big wins this week to keep the Haven playoff dreams alive. First in a wild 4-3 win versus Shepherd, Klaric scored two crucial goals as LHU pulled out a nail biting win in West Virginia.

Then late Saturday night in a win over East Stroudsburg, Klaric delivered a classy goal in overtime to push the Haven past the Warriors. The senior midfielder reeled in a long pass with one feathery touch and placed the ball past the goalkeeper into the side netting.

Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Goalkeeper Joaquina Orlandini of the field hockey team was named the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) Defensive Player of the Week for her performance.

Orlandini pitched back-to-back shutouts, as the Bald Eagles closed the regular season with two more wins. The two road wins this past weekend helped Lock Haven extend both its win and shutout streak to four games.

In the 2-0 win at Saint Francis on Friday (Nov. 1), Orlandini made three saves and she added three more saves in another shutout road win at Rider Sunday (Nov. 3).

Overall, Orlandini has been the goalie of record in all eight LHU shutout wins this season. Those eight shutouts lead the A-10 and rank third in Division I field hockey.

Her 1.12 goals-against-average is No. 2 in the Atlantic 10 and No. 13 in DI.

NCAA football rankings shift

LSU took the top spot this week on the AP top 25 in college football.

They beat previously ranked first Alabama 46-41 in an SEC showdown.

Alabama slid down three spots this week to number four. Ohio State is now ranked second and Clemson third.

Other notable moves were Penn State, previously fifth, all the way down to the 9 spot after a sloppy loss to Minnesota. The Golden Gophers in turn moved up to number 7 all the way from 13 with their victory over the Nittany Lions.

NCAA men’s basketball rankings Roxanne Aretta Staff Writer rab484@lockhaven.edu Even though most men’s basketball teams are only two games into the season, it’s easy to see which schools are going to be big contenders for the NCAA title this year.

With no surprise, Kentucky is ranked first and Duke second this week. The Florida Gators took a hard fall from 6 all the way to 15 this week after a tough loss to in-state rival Florida State 61-53.

UNC took made a leap from 9 to 6, and it’ll be interesting when they face off their biggest rival Duke February 8 and

again March 7. We’ll have to keep a close eye on the teams with great depth until then.

Wrestling turns in strong effort on Sunday Doug Spatafore

Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu TROY, N.Y. – The No. 22 Lock Haven University wrestling team was busy today (Sunday, Nov. 10) and it was Alex Klucker (Summerdale, Pa./ East Pennsboro), who led the way. With the majority of the team competing at the 2019 Journeymen Collegiate Classic, an individual round robin style tournament conducted by pool, it was Klucker who stood out for the second straight weekend.

Competing unattached at Binghamton’s Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open, Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) won an individual title and Jonathan Ross (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) was second.

In Troy, New York, at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, Klucker improved to 6-1 on the season with a respectable 2-1 effort today. After winning last week’s Clarion Open with a 4-0 record in the Bald Eagles season-opener, Klucker was 2-1 today in the 157-pound A Bracket. Klucker opened the day with a 13-8 win over 11th ranked Justin Thomas of Oklahoma. He followed it up with a first-period tech over Indiana’s Fernie Silva (16-0, 2:21). In the finals, Klucker was downed 6-1 by No. 13 Josh Humphreys of Lehigh.

Jared Siegrist (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), Collin Glorioso (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon), Austin Bell (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Veron), Blake Reynolds (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) and Trey Hartsock (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) turned in notable individual efforts at the Journeymen.

Despite going 1-2 overall, Siegrist battled it out vs. some of the nation’s best in the 174-pound B Bracket. He opened the day vs. No. 10 Anthony Valencia (Arizona State), losing, 9-4. Siegrist battled back and upset No. 12 Kimball Bastian of Utah Valley, 6-3. In his final bout, Siegrist was edged out, 3-2 by Oklahoma’s Anthony Mantanona.

Glorioso and Bell each went 2-1, competing at their respective 157 and 174-pound divisions. Reynolds went a perfect 3-0 in his 197-pound bracket and Hartsock picked up a pair of wins for Lock Haven in his 285-pound pool.

Just over 144 miles to the south west, Werner and Ross stood out in Binghamton, New York. Werner (UNA) went 3-0 and claimed the title at 125, while Ross (UNA) was 4-1 and placed second at 157.

The Bald Eagles will enjoy a weekend off next week before heading to Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday, November 23 for the 2019 Navy Classic Tournament.
