Seniors make a poetic exit

Class gift commemorates famous American poet, class literary talent

By Kansas Gibler Seniors spent national poetry month working to acquire a piece of Lawrence history.

Members of the National Honors Society as well as other members of the senior class began working in late March to secure their senior gift: a framed signature belonging to American poet Walt Whitman.

The gift has caught a lot of attention, considering how different it is from previous years’ gifts.

Money came from various sources, such as the senior class donation, classroom change collecting and donations from the community. Social media also proved to be a useful tool in the process.

“It went very quickly,” English teacher Michael Carriger said.

“After both The Budget’s article and the Journal World’s article and some of the online stuff we did on Twitter and Facebook, the community just came through. We had letters and checks in the mail the day after all of that. Both students in classes and teachers in the build-

ing contributed as well.”

The the gift, which has no set location yet, is significant to Whitman fans throughout the school, such as the English teachers, students and specifically, AP language and composition teacher Bill Patterson.

“I’ve taught Walt Whitman in high school, his works in this high school for 15 years, and I’ve often told the story of him coming to Lawrence,” Patterson said. “I’ve even taken classes up to the top of the hill, Old Mt. Oread on campus to think about where he stood and told them to look down that hill and what he would have seen is the place where Lawrence High School would one day be built. For me it’s just perfect that that signature from his time here would end up here in this building, which is the space he was looking at on that day that he visited.”

Carriger found the signature online years ago, but didn’t have a purpose for it then.

“A couple years ago I was looking around on the internet for

things ­­— to get for myself­— and I came across this company site and the fact that they had this signature,” he said. “It reminded me that Whitman had come to Lawrence, and Mr. [Bill] Patterson and I had looked that up at one time and really tried to figure out what his two days were like here.”

Whitman visited north Lawrence, known then as Bismarck Grove, in August 1879. He was here to attend the quarter-centennial celebration of the settlement of Kansas.

After forgetting about the signature, Carriger was reminded of it and decided that it would be a good gift for the highly literate senior class to give.

“Fast forward to this year and we were sitting with National Honor Society, and they were wanting to do some sort of project and so many in National Honor Society are part of the senior class’ officers and things like that,” he said.

“They were talking about a senior gift, and that they didn’t really have an idea for a senior gift, and so it just hit me that this could be

Senior class president JooYoung Lee sees the gift as a good thing to leave for future students.

“They’ve seen it as a trend, as our class being very good at English,” she said. “So they thought it would be a good idea for this Walt Whitman signature to be our class gift and it would be a nice way to leave something tangible as our legacy.”

Carriger’s biggest goal, he said, is to keep Lawrence’s history in Lawrence.

“Having the Whitman signature here brings a piece of literary history back to Lawrence, and I hope it serves as a creative trigger for our students, faculty and community,” he said.

Senior graduate carrying on a five-generation tradition

By Ben Rajewski Tradition is highly valued at LHS, and no one knows that better than the Greenfield family.

Senior Chris Greenfield will be a fifth-generation LHS graduate with alumni relatives attending the school as early as 1900.

Chris’ dad, Donald Greenfield, attended LHS from 1987 to 1990.

Donald’s mom, Carol Dicker Greenfield, met her husband, Dennis, at LHS, whom she has been married to for 46 years, attending

the school from 1962 to 1965.

Chris’ great grandfather, Donald Dicker, graduated from LHS in 1935.

“They never wanted me to go anywhere else or move anywhere else,” Chris said.

In the 50 years between Carol and Chris’ graduations, LHS has undergone some drastic changes.

“This school is now a much larger building and everyone ate in the cafeteria,” Carol said. “There

However, two important events have remained the same.

“Homecoming has remained an important tradition and Showtime, but it was called ‘For You A Song’ in 1965,” Carol said.

Chris is graduating 25 years after his father received his diploma — an event that Donald remembers well.

“[My greatest memory] is Howard and Harold Harris carrying the state championship track trophy across the stage at my graduation,” Donald said.

Chris’ parents, Donald and Lori, will send all three of their children through LHS, Chris being the first. His sister, freshman Lacey Greenfield, will continue the tradition as a member of the class of 2018.

being a small piece of a school that has produced a lot of great people,” Donald said.

In his four years at LHS, Chris has been involved in soccer and marching band. He also represented the family line on last fall’s Homecoming Court.

“Marching band was really important to me in my time here,” Chris said. “I and the kids in my class were really dedicated.”

Chris’ greatest experience at LHS, he said, was this year’s final

band competition.

“Our last band competition in the fall was really memorable,” he said. “Afterward, all of the seniors were really emotional.”

As their final year draws to a close, seniors often reflect on what they will miss most about high school.

“I will miss being around my friends all the time,” Chris said.

“After graduation we all seem to go our separate ways.”

Chris plans to attend the

University of Kansas next year, studying either civil or mechanical engineering.

Although he is moving up the hill, he plans on staying connected to LHS. “I plan on coming to a lot of football games in the fall,” Chris said. “I’m looking forward to the reunion.”

The family line of Chesty Lions is a tradition Chris plans to carry on.

“It is very important to me,”

he said. “I want my kids to go here.”

Club presidents discuss their

legacies

Seniors hand their groups to new hands, reflect on experiences

Olivia Randolph, Young Feminists Club To those taking my place in Young Feminists Club next year, please remember these few things: Not everyone will get it. Some people can be made to see inequality and some come from a place of privilege where they cannot consider the possibility of continuing gender discrimination, so learn who’s who and don’t waste your time.

Acknowledge the privilege you hold in regard to your race, socioeconomic status, religion or gender identity, and be aware of how that influences your experience with feminism and in life

in general. Do your best not to silence the voices of those with less privilege because everyone holds a unique and important perspective.

Stand up for yourself and others in situations outside of our meetings and don’t compromise your beliefs for others. Most importantly, remember to take a break every once in a while.

There are times when you can let the other activists express outrage at the latest instance of victim-blaming or gender-based bias. You don’t have to be serious all of the time and it is OK to laugh instead of scream. I think it’s the only way I’ve made it through without going insane.

Sadie Keller, Habitat for Humanity I really didn’t do anything spectacular. All I’ve done was harness pre-existing energy in the student body. LHS kids care and want to be a part of a larger, outreaching community. Habitat is a good way to capture those virtues and make a positive impact in Lawrence.

Houses are a basic human need, nothing elaborate or unnecessary. Building a house alongside the homeowner is a mutually beneficial experience. My favorite thing about Habitat is it isn’t charity. No one is being handed anything without hours of sweat and work into it.

I hope future leaders remember to be involved in Habitat for reasons better and bigger than it being volunteer hours. I’ve gained more

from working with Habitat than I have given. I know the future is in good hands — hopefully the club continues to grow and evolve into a larger part of students’ daily lives. Just remember, every small thing you can do for someone else changes both of your lives for the better.

Shawn Han, My Little Pony Club My name is Shawn Han, and my legacy is the My Little Pony club. I started it back in 2012, the first semester of my sophomore year. At first people thought it was a joke club. Many people signed up because they thought it was funny.

Our first ever club meeting we had about 25 actual members, although over 60 people signed up.

My original intention for starting the club

was I knew people who enjoyed watching “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic,” but most of them thought they were alone in the school.

Regardless of if the club stops or continues after I leave doesn’t matter to me, because I’m glad about the friendships that I made and the ones that I started. I really hope the club continues because it was so important to me, and I’m certain it was important to many others, too.

Isaiah Young, Gay-Straight Alliance This year I became President—though I prefer the term captain—of the GSA. I walked the group through a complete makeover that I hope will last for many years to come. I declared our space a brave space, a safe space that acknowledges and requires a need for open discussion and learning surrounding not only issues of gender identity and sexual orientation, but issues of race, class, ability, gender and the intersections of these identities that make us people. I helped reorient the GSA back into being an advocacy and support

My greatest hope is that the LHS GSA becomes a larger scale organization with the ability to pay for members to attend queer youth summits and hire folks to teach comprehensive queer safe sex ed.

Strutting through senior year Volleyball player models for area designers

By Kate Rettig All eyes are on senior Makayla Wagner as she walks down the runway. The cameras flash as the crowd admires. Wagner’s designer couture. I got this, she thinks to herself. She strikes a pose and struts back down the runway.

Sophomore year, Wagner began runway modeling for Kansas City Fashion Week. She has since modeled at the event this past year and has done photo shoots in between.

“My friend that was a senior was in one of the fashion design classes,” Wagner said. “She heard about Kansas City fashion week and has told me forever that I should model. So I went and tried out and I made it in. Since then I’ve just been doing it as fun.”

Kansas City Fashion Week is a biannual event held in Union Station that is held as a memorial to Kansas City’s thriving garment district in the 1940’s.

Arriving at Union Station at 8 a.m., Wagner goes straight into hair and makeup. She spends five hours getting her hair and makeup and only has 10 minutes to perfect her walk.

Wagner lines up with the other models. She patiently waits to amaze the crowd with St. Louis clothing designer Lauren Bander’s designs.

“All you’re thinking about is, ‘I just don’t want to fall off the runway’ because if you do, that’s just really embarrassing,” Wagner said.

“It’s nerve wracking, but once you get up on to the runway, it just all goes away because of the initial reactions to it.”

That feeling of confidence coming off catwalk encouraged Wagner to keep modeling.

The long days and aching feet have no effect on Makayla’s enthusiasm toward modeling.

“It is fun to see Makayla model because she is having a good time,” said Wagner’s father, Cress Wagner. “It is also an accomplishment that she has done all on her own.”

“I know she wants to be an anesthesiologist,” senior Kenzie Garvin, a friend of Wagner’s, said. “So she’ll have to do modeling on the side if she wants to do it. I bet she definitely could.”

Seniors thrive as part of staff Duo makes their mark in the journalism room

Seniors Matthew Walter and Adam Graham have assisted the journalism staff this year by tackling interviews and scanning the hundreds of signatures seen on the cover of this issue.

The two have collaborated to help work on the newspaper and yearbook in the journalism room.

Graham, having been on staff longer than Walter, looks after Walter when assigned projects so they can both get as much as they can out of the experience.

“Adam is very concerned with other people,” paraprofessional Genie Harper said. “He likes to help protect people and keep them engaged in things and make sure they’re always involved.”

Being in the journalism room has been a highlight of Graham’s

high school career. He joined his freshman year and has helped out ever since.

“Journalism is my favorite part of high school,” he said. “Doing interviews and hanging out with Ms. [Barbara] Tholen and the guys for the last three years is a lot of fun for me to have.”

Walter joined the staff during his last year at Lawrence High.

They have written questions for their own interviews as well as conducted them.

“They write a lot of interviews they do,” Harper said. “They ask a lot of cool questions.”

Not only has the staff influenced them, but Graham and Walter have also had an impact on the journalism staff. They help others with their stories and

introduce new story pitches for the newspaper.

“Adam in particular has been really good about making sure we cover certain things that I don’t think we’ve covered before he was on staff,” journalism adviser Barbara Tholen said. “The very first time we ever covered Special Olympics was because that’s something that’s really important to Adam.”

Journalism students as well as Tholen have noted the positive energy that Graham and Walter bring to their room.

“I like the way Matthew has the sweetest way of coming in and saying, ‘Hi’ every day when he’s coming to class,” Tholen said. “He just makes me smile every day and makes me really happy that he’s here.”

Their positive energy is also seen in their other classes throughout the day.

“They’re both usually in a very good mood, so I think they bring really good energy to any staff they’re on and the school itself,” special education teacher Mallory Hancock said. “They’re also really inviting about other people and not judgmental at all, and that’s always a really good thing to have at the school.”

Seniors Adam Graham and Matthew Walter work in the journalism room. They conducted interviews and helped with other tasks this year. “My favorite thing is helping out, trying to get some interviews and having fun with other classmates,” Walter said.

Getting a head start Student gets accepted to selective medical program in Chicago

Senior Joo Young Lee’s interest in science and social personality whisks her away to the windy city next fall to get a head start on her medical career.

Lee was one of the select few applicants to be accepted to Northwestern University’s Honors Program in Medical Education (HPME) for the class of 2023. She will be a part of the seven-year program, which will encompass both her undergraduate and medical school degrees.

“I honestly didn’t think I would get in because it’s such a competitive program,” Lee said.

“They choose less than 30 people in the nation or internationally, so I was very shocked. I still don’t know how I got in.”

HPME is a program specifically designed for accelerated students, giving them the opportunity to earn their medical school degree after only a three-year undergraduate program and automatic admission to four years at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine. This also allows those in the program to be exempt from

taking the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) that is normally required for entrance into medical school.

“The reason why I was applying for these combined programs in general was because I wouldn’t have to get an MCAT,” she said, “I would be guaranteed admission to medical school, which makes my undergraduate years a lot less stressful, and I can explore a lot of different things.”

Lee said she ultimately chose Northwestern both for its academic programs and unique work environment for clinical study.

“I chose Northwestern specifically because they have programs in their medical school that are close to what I want to do,” she said. “They integrate clinical years and your studying all together starting your first year of medical school, which is something I really like. Then their medical school is in Chicago, so there’s a lot of stuff going on and a lot of diversity. I can work with a lot of different types of people.”

Although Lee has a long road

ahead of her to complete the HPME program, she got a good start here at LHS. Students and staff at have noted Lee’s academic success throughout her high school career. As well as taking on several AP classes she has been a part of student council, debate, orchestra and more.

“She’s a unique combination of artistic and intellect, and I think she’s going to be a fine doctor,” said Lee’s AP Biology teacher, Ann Foster. “I’m delighted for her. She’s going to open up so many different opportunities, and this is just one of those amazing things that she’s been able to accomplish.”

Lee’s family is especially excited for her since going to medical school has been a dream of hers since she was young, they said.

“Getting into a selective combined admissions program has been a long time goal for her throughout her teenage years,” Hyun-Jin Lee, Joo Young’s father, said. “She has wanted to be a medical doctor since she was very young.”

“Joo Young was a premature baby born at 27 weeks,” he said. “She was in NICU for two months. She has told me that this was very influential in her decision to become a doctor, and she has considered becoming a NICU doctor among other specialties” After completing her education at Northwestern, Lee plans on staying in Chicago.

“I really had an interest in science and math ever since I was young,” Lee said. “Then when I was exploring a lot of jobs, me being a really social person, I thought be a doctor would really suit my interest: interacting with other people and in the process, also helping them with their medical needs.”

Seniors receive full-ride scholarships

“I got a music scholarship. A part of it is called the Marching Jayhawk scholarship and then there is a concert scholarship. I also got, I don’t remember what it’s called, but it is an academic scholarship. KU has one of the best flute professors in the world right now, which is pretty cool, so I’m excited to study with her.”

“The Diversity Leadership Scholarship covers all of the tuition and everything, so it’s going to be really nice to be able to double major international business and political science and not have to worry about the costs of college. As to where that sends me after college, I will be able to spend money on hopefully law school or some sort of graduate work.”

My parents went to college but didn’t finish, and I’m like 1/16 black so I think they kind of stretched it for me. For Wesleyan it was if you demonstrate exceptional financial need.”

Studying abroad Latin student bound for Edinburgh to study archeology By: Brittany Archer

While most seniors debated between Kansas schools, senior Kennedy Dold looked across the Atlantic Ocean.

History is drawing Dold to Edinburgh, Scotland, next year.

“I wanted to apply to the University of Edinburgh because I want to be a medieval archaeologist,” Dold said. “I also applied to the University of St. Andrews and KU. I choose Edinburgh because of the great program. And there aren’t a lot of castles in Kansas.”

Dold said her love for history started young when her father read her history books instead of children’s tales for bedtime stories.

“I have always wanted to be an archaeologist even from a really young age,” Dold said. “I am in my fourth year of Latin, and I really love medieval history.”

Her sister, sophomore Crosby Dold, said the move to Europe is the right choice for Kennedy.

“She gets to go live her dream,” Crosby Dold said. “When we came back from Greece, she seemed a little bummed that she was back [in the US]. She looks like she belongs in Europe.”

Latin teacher Jason Lichte was not surprised Kennedy was able to get in.

“I wrote her letter of recommendation,” he

said. “She is the ideal student dedicated to her studies. She has been exemplary, and to write a letter of recommendation for that type of student is very easy.”

Most college freshman have to take required classes that are not related to their major but that won’t be the case for Dold.

“I get a completely different college experience than most of my peers,” Dold said. “I get to immediately dive right into my major.”

Dold says her time at LHS will help her be able to live overseas.

“I have had a really supportive set of teachers — Mr. Lichte, Mr. [Bill] Patterson, Mr. [Michael] Carriger, Ms. [Tracy] Murray and Ms. [Valerie] Schrag have all helped me one way or

While enjoying a new country, Dold said she will miss certain things about the United States.

“I looked on a map and the nearest Chipotle is in London, which is very far from Edinburgh,” she said.

Senior musicians rock out their last few weeks

Aside from work, school and extracurriculars, students make time for play

By Kansas Gibler Seniors Izaak Workman, Keegan Matheis and Trevor Hall make up three-fourths of the alternative rock band Technology of the Sun. The band was formed by Workman, Matheis and Hall in the fall of 2013. Free State student and drummer Tyler Darnall makes up the missing piece.

Aside from working at Dillons, members practice whenever they can at either Matheis’ or Hall’s houses.

The band has played several shows, predominantly at the Jackpot Music Hall, and hope to play more this summer.

Members were interviewed individually.

How is it coordinating practices with work and school?

TH: “It’s hard. It’s a struggle, but we make it work.”

IW: “It’s really hard.

We all have different work schedules obviously, and we all do extracurricular stuff, choir and band and orchestra.

So sometimes we practice only once every two weeks, and it’s really hard.”

KM: “I guess time. Usually we can only get about 30 minutes in because somebody has to get to work in an hour or so. So usually just finding enough time to practice [is the hardest].”

How did the band start?

TH: “We were really just a friend group that played music together for a while, until finally we got a hold of a drummer. Once we had a drummer we started getting gigs and officially became a band.”

IW: “The two guitar players and I decided we wanted to be in a band, and so we started playing together and recording and stuff, then we looked for drummers.”

KM: Well, we just kind of started writing and recording music, just kind of as friends.

And then we didn’t actually start playing live, we just recorded stuff, and then it

was just me, Izaak and Trevor.

And then we started trying to get a drummer and setting up gigs and stuff.”

How will you continue making music after high school?

TH: “We hope to continue making music because all of us will still be living in Lawrence.”

IW: “We’re all going to stay here in Lawrence, so we’ll probably just continue being in a band. I’m going to Washburn, and I’m going to do music education.”

KM: “Just play a lot of gigs. We should all be going to KU. Oh wait, Izaak is going to Washburn, but he’ll still be in town.”

It’s been real, LHS Online editor-in-chief says her farewell

By Cortlynn Stark About 680 days. That’s 16,320 hours. 979,200 minutes. That’s almost how many days we, as a senior class, have spent in the walls of Lawrence High.

We were the first class of freshmen to ever walk to class in these historic halls. But really, all that means is that we were here for an additional 170 days. Days full

of homework and tests and stress, nights of no sleep and Twitter.

Now traditionally, these senior farewell letters are incredibly nostalgic, based around community and refer to past years. So traditionally, I might talk about how we’ve spent all 979,200 minutes together and how proud I am to say I am part of the class of 2015.

Traditionally, I might talk about how we’ve been through so much together, from Rebecca Black’s “Friday” to Carly Rae Jespen’s “Call Me Maybe” to Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” to T. Wayne’s “Nasty.”

Traditionally, I might talk about all the moments we’ve shared, from the trauma of being the first freshman class to finding the funds to purchase the 1879 Walt Whitman signature.

So I suppose, as we are Chesty Lions and part of one of the most

traditional schools in the country, it would only be right for me to follow tradition and give advice.

To my newsies: always finish your stories before they are due, know AP style by heart, take care of the website, and memorize Barb’s Starbucks order. Working with you all has truly been an amazing experience that I would not trade for anything.

To the seniors: do not live in fear. Exceed the expectations that have been set for you and live with a fire in your soul. Do not hide from change; embrace it.

“Let your soul stand cool and composed before a million universes,” Whitman said in his most well-known poem, “Song of Myself.”

At this point in our lives, we have the entire world ahead of us.

Be confident in the face of all the changes that are happening now.

As a senior class, we are large. We

contain multitudes.

311 seniors. That’s how many of us are graduating on May 19.

We will follow each other in a ridiculously long line to our seats where we will sit and listen to the graduation speakers and then follow each other in another long line to the stage where Dr. Brungardt will shake 311 hands and hand out 311 diplomas.

There are over 19,400 high schools in the United States. There are 474 high schools in Kansas, and only two in Lawrence. Of all of these schools, only one uses the Chesty Lion as their mascot and only one is graduating 311 Lawrence seniors May 19. Only one school newspaper is called “The Budget” and only one school can create such lasting memories.

Thank you Lawrence High for being a not completely awful place during the past 680 days. It’s been real.
