School newspaper moves online Eagle Eye says goodbye to print and hello to digital Tyler Burkham Staff Writer

E

veryone remembers the classic newspaper that we all saw once every six weeks since we’ve been in high school.

Well, every year up until now that is. The Lindale Photo by: Tyler Burkham High School newspaper has moved to an online format in order to stay more accessible and technologically up to date.

“Journalism is changing, “ newspaper advisor Neda Morrow said. “As a part of that change, we have to adapt to the needs of our audience. We want our students to have the most relevant experience possible with their education; therefore, we decided to change from paper to digital in order to provide a real-world journalistic experience.”

The online site features a new easy-to-navigate format that allows readers to connect more directly with the stories that interest them. The online paper will feature the same great pictures and stories we have been accustomed to seeing in the printed edition. Readers will also have the ability to access real-time sports scores and get the latest updates on upcoming games and tournaments.

“Moving to an online newspaper is a great direction to go in this modern technological age,” newspaper staffer Drew Austin said. “All of the gadgets and widgets available for use on the site will make readers feel more up to date and provide a more accessible outlet for district and school-related news.”

Other features on the site include the “Counselors Corner”– a place where students may find information given out by school counselors. Also included is an “Accomplishments” tab showing results of recent competitions. Many other subject tabs are also featured.

“I love the fact that the newspaper is now more accessible to us students,” junior Shelby Monsivais said. “The move online makes us able to follow school news more regularly and gives the student body the opportunity to know about things that are happening or have happened around our school . It has changed the way we can receive information, and has really opened LHSEagle-eye.com a unique opportunity for us to become more involved.”

An Apple a Day

Teacher receives classroom set of iPads Bethany Thompson, Staff Writer

Sally Clemmons and her students have used the newly acquired classroom set of ipads every day since their arrival September 5. So far, they have made flash cards, presentations, and used Quizlet. ”The goal is to use more apps that are educational,” Clemmons said. “I don’t want to use these ipads just to use them. I want to really learn with them while making it fun.”

The different apps used so far range from anatomical guides to a military time game. One app, Heart Decide, even gives an up close look of how the heart works,

allowing varying perspectives not seen in textbooks.

“I do like the textbooks, and we use them a lot,” Clemmons said.

“However, education is changing.

There is a lot more to it now than just looking at a book.”

Along with the iPads, the classroom has Apple TV. This allows students to project whatever is on their screen, including presentations and flash cards.”For us, the ipad is a great tool for study and research,” junior Tyler Clark said. “They help bring the conveniencey of modern technology to the classroom.”

Engineering Excellence

Engineering students experience new way of learning Michaela Blanchard, Staff Writer

LHS students enrolled in this year’s new engineering course will benefit from physics teacher, Duane Walton’s, recent training at UT Austin. When the course was first introduced to LHS, Walton agreed to teach the class and traveled to Austin for a two-week engineering training course.This course will allow Walton to give engineering students a hands-on experience to prepare them for college.

“A group of education professionals took us through the highpoints of the entire year’s course,” Walton said. “I got to see and do every project that my students will do this year. It was an extremely helpful trip; I know everything my students will face this year because I was able to experience it directly.” He says this hands-on class will help students understand how AP Physics and AP Calculus are used in engineering. “I’m excited for my students,” Walton said. “Every year I have a dozen or so in physics that are thinking about pursuing engineering in college. This course will bring a good feel for the process of designing and producing a product. After this course, students will have a better understanding for engineering as a profession and whether they want to pursue it in life as a career.”

is defined as a man or woman being courteous or gallant to others as a show of respect and kindness. We see it every day in simple acts such as a person holding the door for his or her fellow peers, or helping someone pick up their stuff in the halls at school after they dropped it. It is this kindness that keeps us together as a society and shows that we should still have faith in one another.

However there is one thing that is for sure when it comes to chivalry… That it does not need to be eradicated. Chivalry is essential to our society, in that it keeps us together as total strangers and close friends alike. I am certain that if people were to drop this part of our society, that we would be become a bland, hateful generation of naysayers.

Everyday, we see people perform little acts of kindness laced with chivalry, and we take it for granted. The second that we officially let it die, will be the second that our society as we know it will die too. So next time you do something, take a moment and help someone else by holding open the door for them, or even by just giving a small compliment. Chivalry is the backbone of our society, and all we need to do is recognize and appreciate that fact, and we will become better versions of ourselves.

Chivalry is not merely a concept, but it is more of a lifestyle. To get rid of what has already been well established is to attempt to fix something that just simply is not broken. Chivalry isn’t dying; it is constantly evolving. Not a day goes by that you won’t find a man who will willingly hold open a door for his girl or help her carry stuff. It is not a matter of being superior, but rather a matter of taking charge and being a responsible man. Again I say, chivalry is not dead. In fact, it wasn’t even harmed in the first place.

When I think of chivalry, this is the image that comes to mind.

Nowadays, people look back nostalgically, as if they too were once frail old widows touched by the gallantry of a noble knight, and they say that chivalry is dead.

But you could also say that it is a good thing chivalry is dying. By definition, chivalry puts the responsibility of taking care of ‘weak’ people squarely on the shoulders of men. Through centuries of scientific research, we have discovered that women aren’t actually as helpless as the damsels in distress of King Arthur’s day. The death of chivalry is an acknowledgement that bravery and honor or helping those in need is something that men and women alike are capable of, and even responsible for.

The meaning of the word chivalry has changed over years, and there is room for it to continue to adapt to the times. At its core, chivalry has to do with positive character traits. These are values we pick up in our schools and homes, and we can keep the core concept of chivalry going strong if we teach these ideals and honor people with good character. The old chivalry may be on life support, but the new chivalry – the idea that people of both genders should show courtesy and generosity – is alive and well.

Instead of mourning the death of the first, we should celebrate the emergence of the second.

Humiliating memories we wish were forgotten

We all have those moments we wish we could dissappear. However, it’s safe to say it happens to all of us. To ease any embarrasment you might have, here are a couple of stories to which you might relate.

“After using the restroom in a very crowded Wendy’s restaurant, I walked out and everyone started laughing at me. It turned out I had about five feet of toliet paper stuck to my pants. I don’t even know how. I ran back into the restroom and almost started crying-it was so humiliating.”

Junior Bethany Thompson is one of many to learn the negative consequences of distracted driving. A few years ago, her mother was in a nearfatal accident, leaving her mother handicapped to this day.

“One day my mom was just fine, and the next she was in the emergency room,” Thompson said.

“I learned the hard way through my mother that a car wreck isn’t something that will always be easily shaken off. Sometimes, it leaves scars that will never go away.”

“The car was here to remind students to drive safely,” King said.

“This included prompting students to avoid distracted driving, not to drink or text and drive and overall safe driving.”

In 2009, a total of 3,071 fatalities, or deaths, occurred in Texas as a result of traffic accidents. Forty percent of these involved an intoxicated driver.

“I believe the dangers of drunk driving are real and should not be ignored,” junior Rowan Jenkins said. “However, the car is an unneeded scare tactic that seems to be a little disrespectful to whomever was in the wreck. There

Student shares opinion on new tanning law

After Texas doctors voiced their concern for teenagers’ skin health, a new set of laws was developed that went into effect September 1. Under the new law, anyone under 18 will not be allowed in a tanning bed, even if they have parental permission.

The Texas government should reevaluate this law, as it oversteps our government’s implied powers.

The idea behind this law is that teens should not be allowed to use a tanning bed because of the health problems that may occur after frequent use. Teens tend to disregard the consequences of our actions until we are staring at them face to face. However, I believe this law takes it too far.

The state government has both constitutional powers and implied powers. Nothing about the way our country is founded or has been run at any point in time says that the state government can control the cosmetic affairs of citizens. Although the logic behind this law is sound, forbidding something on the chance that a consequence MAY happen is not the most efficient way to deal with a problem.

However, as with any law regarding age limits, if a teen really wants to use a tanning bed, they will find a friend who has one or a business that doesn’t check the age limit. This isn’t what people want to believe, but it is simply the truth about teenagers (as proven with tattoo restrictions, etc). A more logical approach would be to encourage parents to educate their teens and for salons to require parental permission.

This law has great logic behind it, as teens should be more careful as they choose their cosmetic affairs; however the right to simply eliminate this option does not exist. A more sound and less disruptive idea would be to require teens to have parental permission before they enter a tanning bed.

Lindale FFA Student Wins Championship Team Finishes in Top 20

Courtesy of Maya Bethany, LHS Communications Specialist Members of the Lindale chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) traveled to Huntsville, Texas on December 6 to compete in Texas FFA Leadership Career Development Events. Lindale’s Senior Creed and Agricultural Issues team qualified for state competition by finishing in the top two spots of one of the state’s 57 district competitions and the top two spots in one of ten area competitions.

5,805 total entries began the statewide-tournament in 13 different events which reflect classroom instruction in basic leadership skills, which is part of the agriculture, food and natural resources curriculum.

Lindale’s Alli Harris placed first in the Senior FFA Creed Contest to win the state title.

Lindale FFA placed in the top 20 in the Agricultural Issues Contest. Team members included Dylan Bacon, Marc Walvoord, Blake Brody, Hayley Walker, and Tanner Lowry.

The Texas FFA is the nation’s largest state FFA associations with a membership of 100,000 active FFA members.

Miranda Lambert graduated from Lindale High school in 2001. At the age of 17 she started a band called Texas Pride and grew up to become a country music star.

“It is nice that a former Lindale student and Lindale Band member like Miranda wants to give back to her hometown by providing opportunities like this,” band director Steven Moore said. “I enjoyed watching the kids have a great time and hearing the great comments from the people at the festival. It is a tribute to the kid’s hard work, and I am very proud of these young men and women.”

Marching through history Former band members highlight how the organization has grown and changed

he used to imagine what it felt like to watch from the top of the stands. Her face was once brushed by a breeze as she filed through a tunnel of her fellow band members.The tables have now turned and the roles reversed; she now has a vivid picture of what the Pride of Lindale looks like from the top of a cheering crowd.

Band booster Angela Gerthe played saxophone in the Lindale band from 1983 to 1986. She and her husband still support the Lindale band today by chaperoning out-of-town games, working the concession stand, and by watching the band perform in practices, on game day and at their contests.

“I love the fact that our Lindale kids get to know what it feels like to participate together as a “family” and really see what outstanding accomplishments they can reach,” Gerthe said.

“It is also great to see that the band still “pops” the turns, holds their heads high and maintains a clear, crisp sense of marching style.”

1955 graduate, John Jarmen, played trumpet in the Lindale marching band. There were around 30 people in the band when it started. One of the band’s first games was at Van where they played “Little Brown Jug” and “A Tisket a Tasket.”

“We wore white coverall’s and truck driver caps,” Jarmen said. “One of my best memories was of our drum major, who was like a mother hen to all her kids.”

The Lindale High School Band has received 38 consecutive ‘ones’ at UIL Marching Contest.

Through his 18 years as head band director in Lindale, Steven Moore’s band has grown from the 180’s to its current 243 members. He says that one of the biggest reasons the band has grown so much is because of the emphasis the program puts on student leadership.

“About 12 years ago we started making significant inroads to empower our student leaders and give them more control over the program – now we’re seeing the fruits of that,” Moore said. “From teaching marching fundamentals to listening to music playoffs, our students have a lot to do with the growth and success of the organization.”

Follow the Yellow Brick Road Theater Students Perform “The Wizard of Oz” Musical Emma Johnsen Staff Writer

Theater students kicked off the year by auditioning for the “Wizard of Oz,” and opening night was Thursday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m.

“I really enjoyed the performance on Thursday night,” sophomore Drew Austin said. “The humor was wonderful, and I enjoyed the set a lot.”

The performance on opening night ran smoothly according to play director Mrs. Fleming.

“The show went really well,” Fleming said. “What I like about it is that young and old people alike enjoy it for their own reasons. I

think it’s a fun show for everyone.”

Senior leads Lacy and Jessie (good witch and Dorothy) had their last opening night performance of their high school career on Thursday.

“This is one of the last times my best friend [Jessie] and I will sing together onstage,” Lacy said. “There’s something special about being in a musical in high school with people you know and hang out with. I know I’ll miss it.”

Students and parents alike enjoyed this new twist on the story they all know and love. “I absolutely loved the show,” Roger Gray, Mary

Gray’s father said.

“The kids did a phenomenal acting job, and I can really see that they work hard in the theater program.”

Although opening night was Thursday, there will be additional performances on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2.

“I will definitely be coming to the other performances as well,” Austin said. “After seeing Thursday’s performance, I will be sure to recommend this play to friends too.”

Marching to the same beat

The town of Lindale gathered together Saturday, October 12 to watch the annual Country Fest parade. The parade participants consisted of community businesses, sports and school programs.

“I went to the parade

Staff Writer to support my little sister as she gathered candy that was thrown out from the floats,” Junior Rowan Jenkins said. “My favorite part was seeing a fellow classmate dressed as an ice cream cone. I also enjoyed seeing everyone

so enthusiastic about performing in the parade.”

The LHS FFA, football players and homecoming queen were represented on floats at the parade.

The parade began with the band, followed by the Twirlers and Star Steppers and ended at the E.J. Moss Campus where Country Fest took place.

“It was awesome to perform in the parade, even

though it was hot,” Junior Star Stepper Brooklynn Vanwinkle said. “I felt famous, because afterwards people came up to me and said they saw me in the parade.”

Drew Austin Staff Writer Lindale Independent School District recently finished a brand new ag facility to help the expanding FFA program.

It has many improvements over the previous building, and is a showpiece for the community.

“We had to build a new ag facility because the growth in our FFA program had really gone up considerably,” engineering teacher Brent Berryman said. “The amount of animals we needed to manage would not fit in the old barn, so our community and school board decided we needed to improve and make it larger.”

The building took five months to complete and cost around $900,000.

It features up-to-date plumbing, electrics and ventilation, which the old

“It’s the finest ag facility in East Texas, and it allows us to have more students involved in FFA,” Berryman said. “We will be able to host some really nice events that we previously wouldn’t have been able to at our old ag building.”

Each pen has food and water which can be removed when taking out old shavings and animal waste. FFA students clean all the pens as a part of their routine duties.

“It’s a much safer environment for the students and animals to be in,” Berryman said.

“Our school district will reap many benefits from this great new addition.”

The varsity volleyball team played their last game against Wiley on Nov 7. They lost the game 3 to 1 in the area round of playoffs. Their season ended with a record of 37 wins and 4 losses.

“I was really excited of their effort in the playoffs; we came up against some really tough opponents, but overall I think

“This was a group that truly loved volleyball, so it wasn’t hard to make them work for it. I was really proud about this season as a whole and I enjoyed these girls a lot.”

This year, the team had 12 players. Half the team consisted of seniors.

“It was great being with the seniors in their final year,” Renicker said. “It’s upsetting that we’re graduating six players, but the more I’m around all the other players, the more I get excited about next year.”

She rides the bus on the way back from yet another Friday night football game. She sits with people who have become her close friends during the past three years. Although training takes up most of her time, Senior Sarah Thurman doesn’t plan on giving it up.

Thurman is in her third year as a trainer for the football and soccer teams.

“My favorite part of being a trainer is the friendships you get from it,” Thurman said. “You spend all your free time with the same people over and over.

Because of that, they go from acquaintances to best friends.”

Thurman works as a trainer every day during sixth and

seventh periods. She also attends every football and boys soccer practice and game.

“I spend almost all my time doing training,” Thurman said. “Sometimes it makes it difficult to hang out with my friends or do homework. I can’t just do what I want all the time.”

Thurman was asked to be a trainer her sophomore year by Coach Ryzman. She is one of two current senior trainers.

“She is awesome at training, and she learns really fast,” assistant athletic trainer Shelby Pierson said.

“We don’t have a ‘head’ trainer, but she just naturally filled that role, and all the other girls look up to her.”

Thurman plans to study sports medicine in college. She wants to deal with healing players’ injuries.

Sydney Tiiman says that one of their main strengths was working together as a team.

“Coming into the season, I didn’t expect us to accomplish as much as we did, and I’m so proud that we were able to do so much,” Tiiman said.

“It’s nice to be able to leave saying that I was a part of the team with the best record Lindale has ever had in volleyball.”

The team had several traditions, one of which was dancing in the locker rooms to music before every game. Sophomore Rhyan Rand said that times like these made the team closer at heart, which helped them on the court.

“We played well together and grew close as a team,” Rand said. “We’re really going to miss the seniors, but it was really fun playing with them and getting to know them this year.”

Advances in Independence Teacher adds new video rig to student’s wheelchair Michaela Blanchard

While providing independence for a student, this camera stand also replaces the need for expensive tracks and dollies that the school would have to purchase to produce smooth, moving shots. Bryce can use this stand on his wheelchair as if it was a camera dolly, creating another good use for this adaptation.

“I can do more things by myself, so it feels better to use this,” Sustaire said. “I want to say thank you to Mr. Harden.”

Advances in equipment were made in Mr. Harden’s media class to better include sophomore Bryce Sustaire in class work and filmography. This was done by building an attachment for his wheelchair that holds the camera so Sustaire may steer his chair while the camera is filming.

“My first reaction to this idea was interest,” Bryce said. “I have been able to use this a couple of times.

I just put it on my chair and I have videoed the shop where they make all of the props for theater.”

Mr. Harden came up with this idea to help adapt Bryce to be more independent in filming. He molded the camera stand out of aluminum, and this model was used by the Ag department to fabricate the final product.

“Before, he would work in a group with other people with valuable input, but now he can be 100% in control of his own project,” theater tech teacher Brad Harden said. “I enjoy the fact that we were able to find a way he could do something creative and express himself through something we came up with.”

Making a difference Students spend personal time shopping for Christmas Angels Bethany Thompson Staff Writer Psychology students from the 2nd and 4th period classes came together after school and ‘adopted’ an elderly woman through the Salvation Army Angel Tree. This was not required for a grade.

“My favorite part was watching my students put everything together, being excited and having fun,” Shively said. “It was neat knowing we were part of making a difference. At the same time they were blessing someone else, I was also being blessed just by watching young kids giving their time and what they have.”

Everyone brought a minimum of $5. Items students bought for their Angel Tree included a sweater, jeans with an elastic waistband, slippers and more.

“It felt great to know we were positively impacting an elderly lady’s holiday,” junior Michaela Blanchard said. “It was also cool being able to bond with my classmates while also making a difference.”

Cruising into the future Speech students use website for potential careers Alisha Keller Staff Writer Before the Texas legislature decided to allow five different tracks for testing, speech teacher Beth Thomson discovered the website Career Cruising. She has been using it for about five years for students to assess different careers for their future. They use it as a basis of course planning as well as the speech class.

“The website is extensive,” Thomson said. “There is a common misconception that it is used for only assessment.

However, it has been upgraded with a new interface and now provides information on colleges and financial aid; both public and

private.”

The students are able to choose a track for careers ahead of time. There are tests that the students must fill out about their likes and interests. This enables them to explore information as well as find specific colleges, careers, and plans for financial aid. It also allows the students to determine their exact strategy for their future.

“I believe that this site is helping me with my future decisions,” Freshman Isabelle Hyde said. “It provides information on certain careers all in one place; it is much easier

than using search engines such as Google.”

The Lindale High School online site provides a link for this site. It is located in the “Family Access Center” on the homepage. The link permits students and parents to access the site at home rather than it being strictly a school project.

“This site explains what courses you might need to take to do what you want,” Freshman Kailynn Blasingame said. “It tells you what you need to know about careers so that you know what you are getting yourself into.”
