Letter From the Editors We are proud to present to you the first edition of the Rishworth Reporter, brought to you by students at Rishworth School.

We hope to establish a friendly community of writers who will bring the students of Rishworth enjoyment from the paper, as well as interest and fun!

Words from the Editors: My passion for English and Rishworth School led to the idea of a school newspaper. I feel honoured to be a part of the first edition and look forward to seeing how it progresses in the future.

Lily-Mae Cooney Y10 I am looking forward to working with everyone involved with the Rishworth Reporters and embellishing my interest in English Language and Literature to assist and infer my ideas.

I look forward to what is to come from the paper in the future and I hope you all enjoy the stories in our first ever edition!

Taking time for you

The Lent term began with huge excitement as the school welcomed a new Catering Manager, Mr Algar, who has revamped the lunchtime menu for students at Rishworth and Heathfield. We caught up with him to ask him some quick fire questions…

Mental health affects how we think, feel and act. Some days, you just don’t feel up to it, you may feel tired or sad, for no apparent reason. And that’s okay. There are always pressures in day-to-day life, that we feel that we must deal with alone, and not talk about.

It can be hard, to live the day with stresses from school, home life, and friends weighing you down, we can be so caught up in our world and other people’s problems that we neglect ourselves, and our feelings.

But it doesn’t have to be that way, as important as it is to help others, it is even more important to take some time for yourself.

Just take a minute to breathe, look around you, what made you laugh today? Did you learn anything new?

What are you looking forward to tomorrow? Spend some time today doing something you enjoy.

What are the plans for the school menu?

Our new school menu uses only fresh local produce, which will be used and sourced ones from our surrounding areas, meaning that dishes will be more homemade because previously the food has mainly been pre-made.

If you could cook one thing forever, what would you cook?

I would choose cheese on toast using nice fresh bread, butter and extra mature cheddar.

Where did you work before here?

I have been cooking for over 20 years, in restaurants and hotels as well as previously at Fulneck School for seven years. I also worked at ITV in Leeds, cooking for the cast of Emmerdale, as well as being Head Chef at Berties in Elland.

What food do you like/dislike?

I really like French and Asian cooking, but dislike any cake covered in food colouring and icing.

What food should you eat to stay healthy?

You must have a balanced diet, eating all of the main food groups whilst try to eat homemade foods, and avoid processed foods when you can.

What is the hardest thing to cook?

Probably a souffle.

And to finish, relax. It’s going to be fine.

Students on the rocks in EE

The Piece Hall - just 20 minutes from Rishworth School - closed temporarily between January 24th and January 31st, for the filming of the new Marvel series starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn!

On Monday’s at 3:30pm, we all get onto the school bus excited as he head to Rokt in Brighouse for our EE class. We arrive there at 4pm, before promptly putting our harnesses and climbing shoes on and then we go for a warm-up, running across the padded area.

Then it’s time to do some bouldering and as we move round the wall it gets harder and harder. But there is a trick to doing it, you have to use all of your toes to get a grip on the foot hold and there is quite a lot of skill involved. The hardest part is definitely going round corners, but there is a trick to it! There is a ball on the wall that you spin around, it is like being a barn door. You find a foothold magically but then finding a hand grip is the hardest part, once you have been round it once you know where it is and how to do it.

We all love our EE climbing session and can’t wait to be back every Monday.

Owners of the Piece Hall have recently confirmed that filming did indeed take place this month. Filming for the six-episode series began in London last year and is set to be released on Disney +. Other stars including Olivia Colman (The Crown) and Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) may make appearances at this historic venue.

Partying Prime Minister Has the Prime Minister gone too far this time? Despite his apology and claims that he thought the party was a ‘work event’, other senior Conservative members have urged him to resign after he has admitted to attending multiple parties over the last 18 months.

In response to the reports, hundreds of Boris Johnson look-alikes protested outside of Downing Street, wearing face masks and suits, dancing and chanting; “this is a work event” and “my name is Boris”, - relating to the Prime Minister's excuse for partying. The protest took place outside Downing Street, following recent rumours that more parties were held on the eve of Prince Phillip’s funeral last year, amid strict COVID restrictions. Could this be the end of the line for our partying Prime Minister?

Crimson Frosting: The Baker

So if you’re in year 11, I have no doubt you'll be wondering how their exams will be going ahead this summer: will GCSE exams be cancelled for the third year in a row? Well, there are two options…

Be sure to check in every edition with Crimson Frosting: The Baker, a short story produced by one of our talented Rishworth Reporter writers.

If the summer exams are cancelled this year the results of mock exams become much more significant.

Rishworth will hold its own set of mocks in the summer to be a third set of grades alongside those from November and February. Teachers will use these three sets of marks to calculate each student's final grade. This is how GCSE grades were given for last year's year 11’s.

Everyone always said I was liable for murder. But when I came forward and denied such lies and ignorance from my family’s jealousy I was called idiotic, pathetic and finally… Odd. But when mother dearest came into the kitchen one day and informed me and my siblings that the Baker had died that morning, we were all taken aback.

All apart from Barnabus Clark. Oldest brother of the family and the only one who had a sense of unease painted across his face from the news. He squirmed in his seat uncomfortably; a cup of tea in hand, no sugar nor milk.

Mother stated the Baker was found face-down in a pile of fresh, baked apple pie which was supposed to be for Mrs Lovelace’s morning meeting with her loving son.

“Who had done it?” I remember asking. I don’t think I was scared or worried but more intrigued, curious about why? Why someone would choose to murder the sweetest man anyone could ever meet. Who baked the sweetest treats and cared more for his mother than himself.

“I don’t know.” Mother responded. Still the faint sound of a hoarse croak in her voice due to her lack of water and no doubt from her extreme amount of smoked cigarettes; echoes through my head still. Barnabus had now shifted from his chair, leaving his tea on the table beside.

However, if the exams do take place this summer and it seems more than likely that this will be the case, they won't be quite the same as in pre-covid years.

The exams will have a few key differences; an example of this is in English Literature, students will no longer be tested on their poetry anthology, and History no longer covers its unit on Conisbrough Castle.

Adaptations like this will vary between subjects, so if unsure the best thing to do is ask the subject teacher.

Everyone should have questions you'd expect? But no.

Only I was invested in this murder as everyone else's thoughts seemed to be filled with the latest scores in football or what was to be for dinner. But I. As usual, I was desperate to find not only the killer but the reasoning why.

School Menus - w/c 31/01/2022

Recently in Science Club, we have been creating models of bridges using raw spaghetti, yes that’s right, raw spaghetti! Using a whole packet of raw spaghetti, we have stuck them together using sellotape to make model bridges, and I’m sure you’ll agree they look great.

Our food theme is continuing throughout this edition of the Rishworth Reporter! Check out the menu for next week at Rishworth below, and be sure to check when your sitting is by looking on Page 6.

We have been making these to test their strength of how much it can hold until it breaks. On a 40cm span that is thick, this model can hold up to 2.5kg!

When we tried testing their weight, we each added 100g every time until it would break. Flimsy, less built ones were destroyed after the first weight. The fact that this one was able to hold 2.5kg is insane and really cool.

Dear Auntie Pat, How important are your GCSEs? I don’t think that they are important, but my parents are putting massive pressure on me. What do you think? Worried, 14 Hi Worried, I know that it still seems like a while away, but your GCSEs are incredibly important. You may want to look up and understand how your GCSEs are going to affect your life, as they will play a part in your future pursuits and careers. Maybe talk with your parents, explain how they are pressuring you, how you feel about your GCSEs, and what steps they could take to help. It might be an idea to have a word with your teachers and see how they could aid you further. Try to find what motivates you, and please don’t stress too much, take your time with things, and it will all be fine.

Hope this helps, Auntie Pat Dear Auntie Pat, Should I be worrying about my future or should I enjoy my school years while I still have them? Confused, 15 Hi Confused, I understand that the future can be a troubling prospect, especially as you get older, with people pressuring you to think about and make decisions about it. In truth, you can’t do anything about the future if you don’t live in the present, enjoy each day as it comes, have fun with your friends, and don’t worry too much about things that are yet to come.

If you spend time stressing you will find yourself missing out on amazing experiences and memories you will cherish when you are older. While it is important to think for the future, don’t forget about your life entirely, there is always a plan in the end.

Hope this helps, Auntie Pat Dear Auntie Pat, My friend and my boyfriend are hanging out without me and whenever I try to talk to them about inviting me they say “oh not tonight maybe some other time.” So should I be worried about it or should I just let them chill together? Jealous, 17 Hi Jealous, I know this is a difficult situation to be in, as you don’t want to hurt or offend either of the people involved.

How much does this friend mean to you, is she a close friend or just someone you occasionally hang out with? As for your boyfriend, are things going well between you two, or do you feel distant from each other? If she is a close friend, you should have a talk with her and explain gently how you are feeling, don’t accuse her of anything, if she is a good friend, she should be more than happy to listen, and maybe stop being with him so much. If not so, maybe speak to your boyfriend, and explain that you are feeling uncomfortable, if he just laughs and says it’s nothing, that could be a major red flag. If this has been going on for a while, it might be best to leave him. It’s always nice to resolve everything and have everyone be friends, but some things and people are better left behind.

Lost and found If you find something and don’t know who it belongs to, please hand it in to Matron who is in charge of lost property.

If you have lost something, all lost property is put in the bag store (the shed next to the PAC and exit from the Dining Hall).

The bag store is opened first thing in the morning and closed at the end of the school day, for you to go and retrieve any items you have misplaced.
