Chess Club (Y4-6) Practise your game and learn new strategies to make you a better chess player. Competitions and leagues throughout the term, with an opportunity to represent School. You must be able to play chess at a basic level.

MONDAY AT HEATHFIELD All of the following are options available for children to choose on a Monday at Heathfield: Kayaking (Y6-13) Kayaking is a perfect way for beginners to start water sports and is a great way to gain the health benefits of improved cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength. A kayak is a small, narrow watercraft that is typically propelled by a double-bladed paddle. Have fun, improve your technique, and enjoy being on the water. This club lasts for the first 8 weeks of the Michaelmas term, due to reduction in daylight hours as the term progresses.

Hollingworth Lake (additional cost £80 for 6 sessions)

Reading and Crafts Café (Y1-2) A zen like experience; an opportunity to explore facts and fiction or to create a crafty masterpiece. Group, paired and individual reading also part of this club, with children invited to explore in this fun environment.

Reception Classroom (additional cost £15 per term)

Yoga and Mindfulness (Y1-2) This is a time for the children to wind down after a busy day at school. In this fun class they will learn ways to relax and to help them to feel calmer.

Warhammer and Dungeons & Dragons (Y4-13) Table-top strategy and roleplaying games, from fantasy to science fiction. No experience needed, just be willing to get involved.

Orchestra (Invite Only) For instrumentalists of any ability come and play some famous pieces with other instruments some you will know, some will be new!

Players are encouraged to have as many contacts with the ball during the session, with various fun games and small sided matches enabling a high number of touches during the hour.

Sports Multi-Skills (Y1-2) - Thursday Lunchtime Learn new skills in a variety of different sports each week in a small group environment with a dedicated sports coach.

Heathfield Sports Hall (additional cost £4 per session) Karate (Y5-13) - Friday Ran by Matthew Handley (former England Karate and now UK Coaching Ambassador), this club is aimed at mixed ability, including beginners to develop their skills. Students will be transported to and from the dojo by minibus, with collection at the Rishworth School car park.

Join this club to engage in a series of challenging and stimulating puzzles and exercises.

A close harmony choir aimed at Years 9 – 13, singing a variety of repertoire. Attendance at this club is based upon successful auditions.

This is a targeted support session for students in Year 711 wanting additional support with their Maths.

MONDAY AT RISHWORTH All of the following are options available for students to choose on a Monday at Rishworth: Circuit Training (Y10-11) Circuit training is a combination of six or more exercises performed with short rest periods between them for either a set number of repetitions or a prescribed amount of time. One circuit is when all of the chosen exercises have been completed. Circuit training offers a full body workout designed to improve your strength, endurance, muscle growth and cardiovascular health.

Kayaking (Y6-13) Kayaking is a perfect way for beginners to start water sports and is a great way to gain the health benefits of improved cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength. Foundation Maths iGCSE Support (Y11)

Group, paired and individual reading. Come along to explore the fact and fiction in a fun environment.

A club designed for those studying GCSE Maths (Foundation). Attendance at this club will provide you with additional support outside of class, to develop your competence and fluency with the mathematical concepts covered by iGCSE.

Industrial Cadet (Y12) Joining this activity will provide you with the opportunity to work on a real-life STEM project set by a Company! You develop key work-ready skills, technical skills and explore what opportunities are available to you in Industry, including apprenticeship and graduate routes. You and your team will spend 20 weeks partnered with a company to complete a real-life project, which will incorporate University workshops and webinars from a host of STEM professionals and organisations.

At the end of the Scheme, you will graduate as Gold-level Industrial Cadets, a nationally recognised award that you can use as evidence of your experience and take forward to complement your future applications and career journey.

GCSE Further Maths (Y11)

Learn how to code from scratch, become a coder and develop one of the most employer demanded skills of 2022. Coding club will provide you with an introduction to the skills and knowledge you require to kickstart your passion for coding.

This course is an additional qualification that runs alongside the GCSE Maths course. Only suitable for students covering the higher tier GCSE content.

MONDAY AT RISHWORTH All of the following are options available for students to choose on a Monday at Rishworth: Beyond Monopoly (Y7-13) Thousands of families across the country have enjoyed (tolerated?) games like Monopoly and Cluedo and for many they are a Christmas staple. Did you know that the world of board and card games is much wider? In Beyond Monopoly, you'll have the chance to experience some different games that have built upon the foundations of these classics but are more contemporary and offer many different playing styles.

Room 13 School Production (auditioned) The whole school musical is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in a collaborative process and gain experience performing in front of a live audience with music, mics, lighting, costume and set design all working together to create a show. Everyone is encouraged to take part with the show taking place in March 2023.

DT Club - Mixed Materials (Y7-9) Learn how to use a wider range of workshop materials, tools and equipment to produce a functional product such as a lighting device or a clock.

DT Workshop (additional cost £15 per term and 5:30pm finish)

Duke of Edinburgh - Bronze (Y9+) The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award is a nationally accredited, highly recognised accolade. Students will participate in expedition training during this EE time, they will also need to complete 3-6 months volunteering, a skill and a physical challenge of their choice.

F1 in Schools (Invite Only) F1 in Schools work with committed partners to provide an exciting yet challenging educational experience through the magnetic appeal of Formula 1. F1 in Schools is the only global multi-disciplinary challenge in which teams of students aged 9 to 19 deploy CAD/CAM software to collaborate, design, analyse, manufacture, test, and then race miniature compressed air powered cars made from F1 model block.

It is a unique global platform for the promotion of Formula 1 and partners to a youth market. Teams must raise sponsorship and manage budgets to fund research, travel, and accommodation. The challenge inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacture, branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership/teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and apply them in a practical, imaginative, competitive, and exciting way. *Please note, this club may incur additional charges such as travel and accommodation if the team are successful in entering national and international competitions.

UCAS Support Drop-In (Y13) UCAS stands for the Universities and College Admissions Process. This group is aimed at those applying to University for September 2023 start. From starting your initial application, to writing your personal statement and making University Choices, this drop-in session will provide you with individualised support throughout the UCAS process.

Psychology Film Club (Y9) This club is aimed at students who are interested in or studying Psychology. We will watch a film and then analyse it using our psychological knowledge! Post-film analysis may lead to the discussion of issues and ideas not covered in the GCSE or A Level specifications, realising other routes for Psychology in the future. Film topics include mental health, memory, social influence, nature/nurture and much more.

Paired Reading (Y7-9)

Sign Language is a visual means of communicating using gestures, facial expression, and body language. Within Britain the most common form of Sign Language is called British Sign Language (BSL). BSL has its own grammatical structure and syntax, as a language it is not dependant nor is it strongly related to spoken English. BSL is the preferred language of around 145,000 people within the UK (2011).

Pop-Up Play (auditioned) Following the production of ‘The Turn of the Screw’ last year, we will be looking to produce another bone-chilling play for performance in the new School year. This time, we will create the play around the students who would like to be involved, in whatever capacities: as actors, stage managers, lighting / sound engineers – the possibilities are endless. The story will most likely be based upon ‘The Colour out of Space’ but might evolve to provide peculiarly Rishworthian shudders!

All those involved in ‘The Turn’ are very welcome indeed, as are any who were not in that production but would like to take part in something new. Please be aware: once casting has taken place, there will be an expectation that a commitment has been made.

Students are strongly advised to purchase the Collins AQA 9-1 Spanish with audio so they can make use of it during these support sessions.

Ecology is the study of the relationship between living things and their surroundings or environment. Perfect for budding geographers and biologists!

We will be developing skills in photography, fieldwork, environmental conservation projects and much more.

The GCSE Spanish Support for Foundation Tier focuses on exam skills preparation for your upcoming GCSE Spanish exams (reading, speaking, listening and writing).

WEDNESDAY AT RISHWORTH All of the following are options available for students to choose on a Wednesday at Rishworth: Choir (Y7-13) All welcome as we sing a variety of songs as well as taking requests of those in the choir.

Music School HPQ (Y10-11) The Higher Project Qualification (HPQ) is a standalone qualification, equivalent to half a GCSE and can be taken by students in addition to their GCSE qualification. The HPQ provides an exciting opportunity for students to develop and extend their understanding in an area of personal interest or to conduct research into subjects which may not be available as part of their other formal studies and as a stepping stone to the EPQ. Room 8 (Lunchtime)

Science Club (Y7-9) This is where the real science happens! Practical-based activities to promote fun learning through science. Students will have the opportunity to work both independently and in groups to do practical and project based work.

Astronomy (Y7-13) This group will be exploring the night skies, finding out about objects in the solar system and beyond following an academic course to prepare students for a GCSE in Science.

Geocaching (Y7-13)

Students in this club work in pairs to tackle a series of Maths problems.

Paired Maths is an effective researchbased approach to developing numeracy skills, confidence, engagement in and motivation towards Maths.

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor adventure that is happening all the time, all around the world. To play, students use the Geocaching app and/or a GPS device to navigate to cleverly hidden containers called geocaches. There are millions of geocaches located all around the world (we will be exploring the Ryburn Valley).

Participation in this club will help you to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required in order to sit the IELTS reading paper.

GCSE Art (Y10-11) Additional supported time for students completing Art qualifications.

This session is for Year 10 students wishing to sit the Further Maths GCSE. Commitment to this is throughout the GCSE course and students are not required to sit the GCSE, simply completing the course will support attainment in the Core Maths GCSE. Room 5

Raspberry Pi Club (Y7-13) A Raspberry Pi is a capable little device that enables people of all ages to explore computing, and to learn how to program in languages like Scratch and Python. It’s capable of doing everything you’d expect a desktop computer to do, from browsing the internet and playing high-definition video, to making spreadsheets, word-processing, and playing games. Join the Raspberry Pi Club, have fun and start to learn how to program.

Playing board games improves memory and cognitive skills, increases processing speed, develops logic and reasoning, improves critical thinking, boosts spatial reasoning, improves verbal and communication skills, increases attention and concentration, teaches problem-solving, develops confidence and improves decision-making, all whilst having fun. From gaining insight to Travel and Tourism laws and regulations, to understanding the impact of Travel and Tourism on economies, cultures, and societies, those attending the club will develop an understanding of the skills, knowledge and behaviours required in order to have a successful career in one of the world’s biggest industries.

Attendance at this session is essential for all students who are on the school's Aim Higher programme. This session provides an additional opportunity for students to receive individualised guidance, in support of their Sixth Form and University progression plans.

Supercurricular Club (Y11-13) This club provides a forum in which students are actively engaged with the School’s Super Curricular offer. Students are provided with access to thousands of book recommendations, online courses, publications, links to useful websites, podcasts, videos, work experiences, competitions, university events and more all in one place. Universities now see super curricular as a compulsory element of the admissions process. Those actively extending their knowledge stand out amongst other applicants.

iGCSE English Support (Y10-11) A club designed for those studying GCSE English. Attendance at this club will provide you with additional support outside of class, to develop your competence and fluency with the mathematical concepts covered by iGCSE. Room 4

THURSDAY AT RISHWORTH All of the following are options available for students to choose on a Thursday at Rishworth: Ski Club - Intermediate (Y7-13) For those who wish to improve their skills further on the slopes. A continuation of last year's lessons or a new start for students who want to brush up their skiing. Please note - the group will be split into Intermediate and Advanced group, with no Beginners on this course for this term.

Chill Factor, Manchester (additional cost £180 for 10 week course) Jewellery Making (Y7-13) Using different components and techniques, you will quickly learn to make one of a kind items to suit your own unique style as well as producing gifts for your friends and family that they will love.

Rishworth Ramblers (Y7-13) Walking is good for your health and mental well-being. A good walk after a busy day at school will do you good. We walk on various routes around the local area and in all weathers! You will need appropriate footwear which are strong enough to cope with walking on muddy paths as well as appropriate walking clothing.

Yoga (Y7-13) Yoga is an ancient practice that involves physical poses, concentration, and deep breathing. A regular yoga practice can promote endurance, strength, calmness, flexibility, and well-being. Yoga is a mind and body practice. Various styles of yoga combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation.

Duke of Edinburgh Award - Silver (Y10+) When you complete your DofE programme you’ll develop the skills and attitudes you need to become a well-rounded, confident adult. Qualities that universities and employers are attracted to. Completing DofE is a great investment in your future.

It will take you at least 6 months for Silver if you’ve already achieved your Bronze, or 12 months if you’ve jumped straight into Silver.

– Volunteering section: 6 months – Physical and Skills sections: One section for 6 months and the other section for 3 months – Expedition section: 3 days/2 nights If you didn’t do Bronze, you must undertake a further 6 months in either the Volunteering or the longer of the Physical or Skills sections.

Learn more about journalism to develop investigative skills, reporting and creative writing as well as learning about producing, editing and marketing.

Karate (Y5-13) Ran by Matthew Handley (former England Karate and now UK Coaching Ambassador), this club is aimed at mixed ability, including beginners to develop their skills. Students will be transported to and from the dojo by minibus, with collection at the Rishworth School car park.

FRIDAY AT RISHWORTH All of the following are options available for students to choose on a Friday at Rishworth: Driving Theory Test (Y12-13) This enrichment programme provides students with a forum in which to study for, and practise both the multiple choice and hazard perception elements of the UK Driving Theory Test. Each of the 13 sessions will focus on a range of questions and answers from the official test. Completing the theory test is compulsory prior to applying to take the practical driving test.

The official test is not completed as part of this enrichment activity. Students will be informed of how to and when to book and pay for their test through their local test centre.

Students work in pairs to read a series of self-selected texts. Paired reading is an effective researchbased approach to developing accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and motivation in reading.
