Sticking with the system Liberty Hill hoops focused on tried and true on the court

By SCOTT AKANEWICH LHIndependent Sports Editor Barry Boren knows what works.

After all, the Liberty Hill boys’ head basketball coach has spent 41 seasons on the sidelines of high school hoops courts and won over 700 games in a storied career over the course of which he has seen monumental changes in how his beloved game is played.

But, it hasn’t changed how he plays it.

“We have a system of play we use regardless of what players we have,” said Boren. “We play a pressing style on defense and have a fast-break, wide-open offense.”

What that means is when you step on the court against the Panthers, you can count on one thing.

Getting very tired.

If you’re not desperately defending an offense, which moves at the speed of light, you’re putting just as much energy in attempting to break down a merciless, intense defense that makes you earn every inch of the court.

According to Boren, there are no free rides against his club.

“If you’re going to pressure once you’re at half-court, you might as well press the entire way,” said Boren. “If you can corner the court with a full-court press, it creates a lot of confusion for teams.”

Look no further than last season for proof, when the Panthers posted a 34-7 overall record, including a 9-1 district mark and a march all the way to the Class 4A state championship game.

Fast-forward to this season and Boren is missing three starters from that squad in Cade Cole, Jareck Naylor and Parker McCurdy, but that doesn’t mean the cupboard is bare.

Returning to the Liberty Hill lineup from last year’s starting five are 6-foot-1 senior point guard Carson Perkins, a fouryear starter and all-state per6

former last season and 5-foot11 forward Kaleb Bannon, who earned all-district honors.

Not a bad place to begin and there are plenty of reinforcements to fill the shoes of the graduating seniors, said Boren.

“We have Kadin Knight and Hunter Clayton back who were our first two players off the bench last season as sophomores,” he said. “We also have Cole Ondrasek, who is our glue guy.”

Further roster depth will be provided by seniors Caedan Minix (5-10 guard), JC Russell (6-0 forward), and 6-foot swingman Sujit Panday, who transferred from East View, as well as juniors Bobby Mundy (5-10 guard), Collin Lyons (5-10 guard), AJ Garza (5-8 guard) and 6-foot-2 center Bobby Haddaway, who have moved up to the varsity this season from a junior varsity outfit that has won 16 consecutive district titles and sophomore Walker Weems (6-4 guard).

As the Panthers tip off the new campaign, Boren is also without seniors Brady Brewer (5-11 guard/forward) and Walker Baty (6-5 center), who are still on football duty, although Brewer is out for the season after knee surgery for an injury suffered on the gridiron.

Boren said the system he employs allows more of an all-inclusive aspect to his club.

“We have guys who couldn’t necessarily go and play other places,” he said. “But, that’s just an example of our kids doing things the right way.”

All that being said and despite his resolve in sticking with the system, which has served him so well over four decades of coaching, Boren still realizes there is definitely a need for wiggle room even within the most rigid parameters.

“My philosophy never changes,” he said. “But, the way you achieve it can be different

Runnin’ Panthers -Together as One

Welcome to the 2019-20 season and another opportunity to watch your Liberty Hill Runnin’ Panther Boys’ Basketball team.

After a tremendous run last season that culminated in a berth at the State Tournament and then two buzzer-beater finishes, the team is anxious to confront the challenges of a new season.

The theme “Together as One” is an apt one for this team, this season, and really for the Liberty Hill athletic program. It really is “like a family” as many here indicate.

There will be many familiar faces on this year’s Varsity team.

There are Carson Perkins (All State point guard) and Kaleb Bannon (1st Team All District, All State Tournament Team) as returning starters. Then, there are Kadin Knight (District Newcomer of the Year), Hunter Clayton, Walker Baty (All District Honorable Mention), Brady Brewer, and Cole Ondrasek who played off of the bench.

These along with members of

a District Champion 9th grade and JV will make up a squad that hopes to duplicate the success of the past season.

District 27-4A is one of the toughest in Region IV in all sports, but especially boys’ basketball. The Taylor Ducks boast a return of four of five starters from a 25+ win team as do the Salado Eagles. Look for both of these squads to be ranked in the Top 25 in the state throughout the year.

Likewise, the Burnet Bulldogs, coached by Roy Kiser, returns more than a couple of starters to a playoff team from a year ago. The Lampasas Badgers will be much improved as they follow on the heels of their football program, which had a landmark season this year. Finally, the Eastside Memorial Panthers will also be a challenge as its program is accustomed to playing big schools throughout its schedule.

In preparation for a tough Region IV, the Runnin’ Panthers have spiced the schedule up

with many upper division teams as well as challenging tournaments. The Panthers will again travel to Fort Worth to play in the prestigious Whataburger Tournament. There will be many state contenders there.

Among other teams to watch in Region IV are: Corpus Christi West Oso, Boerne, Fulshear, Stafford, Needville, Fredericksburg and Navasota.

This will be my 18th year at the helm of the Runnin’ Panthers. The Panthers have had immense success under my tutelage. My son, Blake Boren, is entering his 9th year as the Varsity Assistant and JV Coach.

This year we are joined on staff

by Aaron Russo, who played point guard in the Runnin’ Panther system just as Blake did. Coach Russo will assist the Varsity and will coach the Freshmen.

I always attribute the Panthers’ success to two factors: great kids, great parents. The explanation is that the kids come with an attitude and a good

work ethic. The parents entrust the coaches to work with their kids. It goes hand in hand. To further that mantra, I added to this year’s theme by saying, “It’s not always the ‘best’ team that wins; sometimes, it’s the team that plays the ‘best’ together!”

Together as one…Liberty Hill High School Runnin’ Panthers 2019-20! ~ Coach Barry Boren

HEAD COACH BARRY BOREN Barry Boren is the Head Boys’ Basketball Coach at Liberty Hill High School. He is in his 18th year at the helm of the Runnin’ Panthers, and his 41st year as a teacher/coach (36 as a Head Coach.) He teaches English II and Physical Education.

Coach Boren is a native of Fort Worth where he graduated from Haltom High School and Texas Wesleyan University with a B.A. in English and a Minor in Physical Education. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Sue Ann, and is the proud father of three children and seven grandchildren.

The Boren family is one of teachers. His wife is a retired teacher.

His oldest daughter, Shae, is a former teacher who now works in the church with her husband, Jake. He is a former teacher/coach now in the ministry. They have three children. Daughter number two, Brittany, is a former teacher who now does sales

from home. She is married to Nick who is a naval officer and flight instructor. They also have three children. Then, there is son, Blake, who serves as the Assistant to the Head Coach.

He, and his wife, Kristina, both teach at LHHS. They have one child. There are literally students who have come through LH that have been taught by five different Borens!

When Coach Boren is not coaching, he still loves having something to do with basketball. He routinely can be found keeping the gym open for his players and former players.

He also has a large, full day camp every summer. In addition, he has part-owned an overnight camp that was originally housed on the campus of Texas A&M/Commerce (Texas Prep Basketball School) for 15 years. During the summer, he also tries to follow the playing path of his upcoming players while on the AAU circuit.

Prior to coming to Liberty Hill, Boren coached at Keller Fossil Ridge HS (3 years), Little Cypress-Mauriceville HS (6 years), Terrell HS (6 years), Kaufman HS (3 years), FW Richland Jr. High (2 years), FW Monsignor Robert Nolan HS (1 year), FW Watauga Jr. High (1 year), Keller Middle School (1 year). Coach Boren has never been a basketball assistant.

Even at the middle and junior high schools, he was in charge of the entire program.

In Coach Boren’s lengthy career, he has had many former assistants who have gone on to become Head Coaches, Principals, and Superintendents. He has also had players who have gone on to play at the collegiate and professional levels in various sports.

Meet the Assistant Coaches

BLAKE BOREN JV Head Coach Blake Boren is the Junior Varsity Coach and Assistant to the Head Coach. He is entering his ninth year in this position. The younger Boren is a graduate of Liberty Hill High School (2006) and The University of Texas (2011). He has a B.S. in kinesiology.

He teaches math at the high school. The Borens moved to Liberty Hill when Blake was a freshman in high school.

That means that Blake Boren has had a hand in the Runnin’ Panthers’ success for the last 18

years. He was an All-Region point guard as a senior on a 2006 team that went 26-7 and made it to the Regional Tournament. He graduated in the top 10 of his senior class and went on to UT. While there, he coached the upcoming teams (which included Coach Aaron Russo) in spring, summer, and fall leagues. When he graduated from college, he was immediately hired in his current coaching position.

Blake is married to the former Kristina Houser. They celebrated their fifth anniversary this year. They have one son, Abram, who will turn three in March.

Kristina is a graduate of Leander High School and The University of Missouri; however, she is a longtime resident of Liberty Hill. She teaches

high school English here at Liberty Hill and has an extensive background in journalism as well.

Blake is well known for his ability in player development. He also handles all the strength and weight training for the Panthers’ basketball program. He handles all of the technical and video work as well.

In addition to coaching basketball and teaching math, Coach Boren also assists with cross country in the fall.

AARON RUSSO Freshman Head Coach Aaron Russo coaches

the LHHS freshmen. He is the son of Scott and Donna Russo. He is a 2011 graduate of LHHS. Coach Russo obtained a B.S. in Sports Management and a M.A. in Educational Leadership from Dallas Baptist University (2018 Graduate).

He teaches Physics and AP Physics at the high school and is in his first year as a coach.

Coach Russo is a product of the LHHS Runnin’ Panther basketball system. He played for Coach Barry Boren, and was a point guard on Varsity for three years on three teams that won 30 games each year.

Coach Russo taught junior high science in Fort Worth for two years and taught at Liberty Hill Junior High one year before moving to the high school. In addition to coaching basketball,

Coach Russo assists with cross country.

He is married to the former Meredith Wimberly whom he met while both were working as students at DBU. The Russos have been married for three years and have a son, Amos, who is 15 months old. Meredith, also a DBU alum, is currently the Children’s Ministry Director at The Grove Church in Liberty Hill.

Coach Russo’s return to Liberty Hill and subsequent move to the high school has been a blessing for all parties.

He brings his knowledge of the game, and the Liberty Hill system in particular, as well as the ability to be a patient teacher both on and off the court.

Russo is sure to leave his mark as a coach and teacher just as he did as a student and athlete.

By SCOTT AKANEWICH LHIndependent Sports Editor Last season was one of many ups and downs for the Lady Panthers on the hardwood.

A 5-1 start to the season was followed by 14 losses in their next 17 contests, only for a purple patch of 15 victories in the following 17 games.

“Hopefully, this season won’t be as much of a roller-coaster,” said Liberty Hill head Coach Chris Lange, who is entering his fifth season as Lady Panthers’ bench boss. “We’ll probably still have our share of ups and downs, but not as drastic.”

Liberty Hill finished last season with an overall record of 22-18, with a 9-1 district mark before advancing to the regional finals, where they were defeated by Burnet, 52-36.

Entering last season, the Lady Panthers had graduated 10 seniors from the previous year’s roster, which meant there was much upheaval within the Purple-and-Gold ranks, causing the drastic swings in form over the course of the campaign.

According to Lange, his returning players will take what they learned and apply it to the voyage they’re about to embark on.

“We learned a ton last year,” said Lange. “Especially, how to overcome adversity. We found out that if we stick to the plan and stay together, we’ll be fine at the end of the day.”

However, Lange’s squad is still relatively inexperienced, with only three seniors on the roster in Kailey Berzin, Brooke Wright and Lauren LaDuque.

“We’re still kind of in the same boat as last year,” said Lange.

“We’re still really young.”

New to the varsity this season is a quartet of players who will be expected to contribute straight away in sophomores Maddison Walker and Reagan Walker, who moved up directly from the freshman squad and juniors Taylor Swieczkowski and Olivia Shelton, who played at the junior varsity level last season.

However, despite the newness of the varsity, the adjustment shouldn’t be all that drastic, said Lange.

“I don’t think it’s as big a deal as you might think,” he said. “All of them were integrated into our practices last year and they all understand what we expect of them.”

Of course, this kind of seamless transition is possible when all of the teams are on the same page, going all the way down to the junior high level, said Lange.

“We try to run a lot of the same stuff,” he said. “So, when they get here, it’s easier.”

As far as what kind of offense and style of play this season’s Lady Panthers will run, it all depends on what his personnel is most suited to, said Lange.

“I’ve always believed as a coach your players dictate what you can run,” he said. “But, we would like to be able to play a faster tempo.”

Juniors Jessica Holliday, Bailey Laird, Avery Harrell, Morgan Jackson and Aston Jordan, along with sophomores Kenzy Wise and Emma Hubbard will also play significant roles for the Lady Panthers moving forward, said Lange.

“We’ll certainly depend on Brooke (Wright) and Kailey (Berzin) for senior leadership,” he said. “We’re expecting a lot from Kenzy (Wise), Emma (Hubbard) will continue to grow as a player, Morgan (Jackson) brings a lot to our outside shooting and Bailey (Laird) can do it all – she’s our spark plug.”

Lange added the fact his players were able to work out together over the summer provided a proper platform to build on once the new season arrived.

“We had two hours of practice a week, which allowed our players to keep basketball in the front of their minds,” he said.

“Right now, I have a really good feeling about where we are as a team. I think we’re moving in the right direction.”

Strength in Numbers

COACH CHRIS LANGE Chris Lange is a 1988 graduate of Liberty Hill High School.

He earned a degree from University of Mary Hardin Baylor, where he began his coaching career as the Lady Crusaders’ Student Assistant Coach.

He spent the next 13 years coaching in Temple, where he worked as the Junior High Girls’ Athletic Coordinator before moving up to be the varsity assistant for the Lady Tem-Cats.

Wanting a change for his family, he and his wife, Patience, moved back to his alma mater, Liberty Hill. Again, he started as the Junior High Girls’ Athletic Coordinator. He is now the Lady Panther Varsity Coach at Liberty Hill High School.

Lange was lucky enough to coach both of his children, Autumn and Garrett, during their junior high basketball careers. When he got the varsity job, he was able to coach his

Another year is upon us, and we are very excited to get the 2019-2020 basketball season underway.

Basketball provides our students to be part of something bigger than themselves. It’s a chance to learn how to work together for a common goal, build friendships, and life-long memories. Being at Liberty Hill you know that this is a special place to play. We get tremendous support from our school board, administration, faculty, parents and community to make our year a success.

This year will not be different from the past. We will continue to work to be the best we can be, on and off the court. Basketball provides an opportunity to grow as an individual. It provides skills and confidence that they will carry with them throughout their lives. We understand that we can learn when we win and most definitely learn when we lose. As a team we know we need to stay the course, trust in one another and continue to

grow as players and individuals every time we step on the court.

Our goals have not changed -- only the players behind the jersey. Over the years we have had many great young ladies that have worn the Liberty Hill jersey and have passed down a tradition of what it means to put it on. This year we will continue to do what it takes to keep our standards high and pass on the traditions that have made Liberty Hill the place to be.

Our saying for this year is “Strength in Numbers”. Yes, the Golden State Warriors used it last year but it rings true to us every year. We are not about one player. We are about the entire team. Together, we can and will make our dreams become a reality!

Meet the Assistant Coaches HALEY HOUSTON HUDNALL

Haley Houston Hudnall is the varsity assistant and junior varsity coach for the Lady Panther Basketball program and will also be coaching track in the spring.

She is a graduate of Odessa High School and The University of Texas. She is in her second year at Liberty Hill coming from Temple where she spent three years teaching and coaching basketball and volleyball. daughter, Autumn, again as a senior.

Coach Lange and his wife are enjoying their new phase in life as empty-nesters. Both kids are now attending Angelo State University.

Coach Lange is starting his fifth year as head coach of the Lady Panthers and 12th year at Liberty Hill High School.

He helped lead the Lady Panthers to four deep runs into the playoffs.

AMANDA RODRIGUEZ

Amanda Rodriguez is the varsity assistant and freshman coach for the Lady Panther Basketball program and is also an assistant for softball team. She is Coach “A-Rod” third year at the high school where she teaches Chemistry and IPC along with her coaching duties. She has three daughters; Avery, Kendall, and Dailey. She graduated from Texas State University and Pflugerville High School.

Prior to Liberty Hill High School, she taught and coached at Liberty Hill Junior High.

because you need to be able to blend it with the talents and strengths of your players.”

In addition to that flexibility, an ability to be able to adapt on the fly and sometimes tailor game plans for certain opponents based on what one has at one’s own disposal is critical, said Boren.

“If the other team has big guys, then we’ll open up the floor,” he said. “On the other hand, if they have slashers, we’ll also react accordingly.”

Boren attributes the fact his program has been able to maintain a high level of excellence for so long to the standards in place at Liberty Hill and the environment it creates.

“There really is an expectation here,” he said. “I think it’s the same for us as it is for our football team.”

To that end, a big-picture perspective must always be in place to ensure continuity – an approach that includes having a duo of former players in place

to complete Boren’s coaching staff in assistants Blake Boren and Aaron Russo, who lead the junior varsity and freshman squads, respectively.

Something else that keeps the Panthers’ hoops ship afloat is the fact Boren realizes he can be strict on his players, but not without giving them the motivation to continue to be part of the program, he said.

“I want our players to keep wanting to come back,” said Boren. “I like it when our players like to be and play here.”

Look no further than the gym on an average school morning before the first bell of the day rings for proof, he said.

“Our kids will hang out in the gym shooting before they go to class,” said Boren. “We have a phenomenon here at Liberty Hill which doesn’t exist other places.”

After all, numbers don’t lie, he said.

“We had 195 boys at our summer camp,” said Boren, of the

annual event for grades two through nine. “Bigger schools than us don’t have those kinds of numbers.”

As far as the immediate future is concerned, he said he suspects his squad needs to be able to carry a bit more of the load after the departures from last season’s team and is already putting measures into place to ensure his players are ready.

“We’re doing more conditioning than in years past,” said Boren.

“I think we may have to depend on certain players a little more, so we have to run a tighter ship and not let any of the little things get away from us.”

One thing Boren said he’ll miss about last year’s club was the accountability the players had in policing themselves when necessary.

“We had great senior leadership last season,” he said.

“They were able to take hard coaching.”

Speaking of which, during a

recent practice, the veteran coach didn’t like what he saw during the closing stages of the workout.

“I thought we were really sloppy in the last 15 minutes or so and let them know,” said Boren.

“So, the next day, I stopped practice with 15 minutes left and said, ‘Okay, so what are we going to do today?’ After that, they were much better.”

Going back to the Panthers’ style, Boren said what his squad is able to do comes as quite a shock to some, but the finished product never fails to please regardless of the results.

“People see our kids and question if we can run that kind of system successfully,” he said.

“But, if you like basketball, you’ll like watching us play.”
