Are you a RAW volunteer? We appreciate each and every member who has given back to the club and running community over the past year, and we'd like to show you. Plan to come out to the clubhouse on Thursday, May 15 at 6:30PM. The fun will begin with a walking race: Runners vs Walkers, no running allowed! Do you think you've got what it takes to win a 5K without running a single step? Come on out and find out! After the race, RAW will serve up pizza, beverages, and lots of great goodies for all the volunteers.

All members who have volunteered for water duty, trail clean up, RAW races, RAW-sponsored aid stations, or for general RAW duties are eligible to win prizes. If you haven't volunteered yet this year, there is still time to sign up for water duty to qualify for the prize drawing!

Wounded Warrior Aid Station Mark your calendar for the Wounded Warrior 10K and Half Marathon on June 8! Many RAW runners compete in the annual race in Los Colinas, and even more volunteer at the RAW aid station. If you aren't running, watch this space for more information. A sign up sheet will be posted at the clubhouse in late May. (Note: If you are running but haven't registered, see the discount section to save on your entry fee!)

RAW has a lending library, featuring dozens of running books and periodicals. Borrowing is easy - simply sign out the book of your choice in the binder on the library shelf, enjoy your selection, and sign it back in when you are done. The library is located on the shelves to the right of the microwave in the clubhouse.

About the time this appears in your Inbox, RAW past-president and current RRCA North Texas State Rep Kathryn Gleghorn and I will be headed to Spokane for the 56th Annual RRCA National Convention.

We're sure to bring back to RAW best practices on race execution, board governance and overall club functionality along with a bunch of fun memories (my personal goal is to run with Olympian Deena Kastor, good luck wishes are welcomed!).

service with the city of Southlake. She attended the Southlake Volunteer Awards Banquet where she received a pin and a certificate signed by President Obama.

Katie also attended the Metroport Awards Banquet in Colleyville where she received the 2014 Values Award for Innovation. This award recognized her involvement in the Metroport Teen Court system where she served as a teen attorney, jury monitor, and jury member.

Metroport Teen Court is a voluntary program which allows juvenile Class C misdemeanor offenders to "pay" for their citation through community service and involvement in the judicial process. It includes the cities of Colleyville, Grapevine, Keller and Southlake.

It's often said that parents lead by example and Brad and Robin are showing their children the way through their own active volunteer efforts. Robin said, "I'm proud of her. She enjoys being a teen attorney and likes the experience of prosecution and defense, although I think she likes to prosecute more.....She comes home with some interesting stories, but she is very respectful keeping privacy/protected information of individuals."

Congratulations to Don Robertson on his one-year running streak. Don says, " My current running streak reached it's year anniversary on April 21st. I started the streak the Saturday after the Boston Marathon last year. I previously had a streak of almost 500 days and found that it helped me run better and kept me motivated. I really don't think about when the streak will end, but instead I'm grateful to get outside and run everyday."

Some of you had the good fortune to meet my mother; she was a wonderful woman who was full of energy and loved everyone. And many of you know that three years ago she passed away due to the effects of

going on right here in Dallas at the Dallas Running Club's White Rock & Roll 10 Mile run on May 3. I wish Godspeed to everyone racing. For information about the race, visit the race website.

Run Smart: Run Safe

The Run Smart : Run Safe yearlong public-safety awareness campaign continues with frequent Safety Tips posted on the RRCA Facebook page. To see these and stay abreast of all RRCA news "like" the RRCA Facebook page.

Be sure to watch their 98 second video. Who knows, 98 seconds could save your life!

Alzheimer's. This disease has a devastating impact on families. I know.

My mother battled with Alzheimer's for a number of years before losing her battle. My mother was a woman of great energy with a heart full of love, life and joy. She and those she left behind were robbed of that. I want to help put an end to this disease.

I was asked by the Alzheimer's Association to serve as the Honorary Chairperson for the "Walk to End Alzheimer's" to take place at Meadowmere Park on October 11. This is a primary fundraiser for Tarrant County. Please consider participating by either walking, organizing a team or sponsoring the event.

The event is still several months away but it's never too early to get started. I plan to provide more information in future issues of the FOOTPRINT. If you want more information, email me directly, log onto alz.org or when you see me, just ask.

Giving Back to the Sport GBTTS | Giving Back To The Sport Randy Wolf

May is the fifth month of the year and Randy Wolf has already volunteered for water duty five times this year. To date, that's slightly more than a once per month average! RAW members have grown accustomed to having water and Gatorade available on the west course every weekend, but without a dedicated volunteer stepping up to perform this important task there would be plenty of us who might risk getting dehydrated during our weekend run/walk. Volunteering for RAW water duty typically adds about one hour to the volunteer's morning with the filling of the five jugs and their drop off, pick up and clean up.

Randy has signed up in advance using the "Water Duty" sign- up sheet on the back door of the clubhouse several times this year, but he's also stepped up at the last minute when a last minute plea goes out on a Friday afternoon for water duty coverage. Not only does Randy step up for water duty he also is a very willing volunteer to help us on race day with whatever task we need; he is the quintessential volunteer. Need a race day bike lead? Randy will happily do it. Need a packet pick up volunteer? Randy will make it fit his schedule. Need help with post-race clean up? Randy will do it.

Word on the street is that Randy is friends with the RAW Easter bunny and even helped with putting out the colorful, candy filled Easter eggs that greeted RAW's Easter morning runners and walkers. Thank you Randy for giving back to the sport and for doing your part to keep your RAW friends hydrated!

Stronger Than Ever!

It is Tuesday morning, April 16, 2013, I am sitting inside a Starbucks Coffee Shop in Framingham, MA., reading a copy of the Boston Globe that I had just bought....I just keep staring at the front page, my eyes riveted to the front page photograph and article about the previous day's bombing at the 117 th Boston Marathon. I am still stunned and feel sick to my stomach. How can a day so wonderful and full of triumph, glory and celebration for so many had turned so dark and tragic so quickly?

I have run many marathons and ultras all over the United States, but nowhere have I felt more loved and welcomed as a runner than in Boston. It is the oldest marathon in the United States. Generations of families have come out each Patriots Day here and brought their children to watch this famed and cherished event. The race is deeply woven into the fabric of this city's heart and soul. They understand and appreciate all the hard work and training it takes to qualify to run the marathon there.

I thought 2013 might be my last Boston, but after the bombing I knew I had to come back again in 2014 to help support the wonderful people of this town and this iconic event.

So that is why I was once again at the athlete's village in Hopkinton, MA, getting ready to run my fourth consecutive Boston Marathon this year. This marathon, more than any other has helped shape my life. On my journey toward it's finish line I have been reminded how fast things can change in one's life and just how short life can be.

I crossed the finish line the year before about 15 minutes after the first bomb went off. I was lucky, others were not as fortunate. An eight year old boy was killed, others lost limbs and faced many months of painful rehab. Upon my return, I would ask my girlfriend, Pamela Kent, to marry me and become my Mrs. T.O., so this race would mark the one year anniversary of that event .

The atmosphere at Boston this year was electric! The crowds along the course were bigger and louder than ever. Everyone was determined to take back this race and the finish line from the terrorists.

Injuries turned my run into an epic struggle just to finish but thanks to the amazing crowds lining the course and knowing that my

wonderful wife, my lovely Mrs. T.O. was waiting for me at the finish line helped to encourage me to grind out the final miles.

I heard and read so many incredible and inspiring stories during race weekend of valor, courage, determination, kindness and love.

It served as a reminder to me how important it is to stay humble, be social and be someone who wants to help other people.

The Boston Marathon is back bigger and better than ever and so are the people of this great city! I am so grateful I had the opportunity to have been a small part of this journey of recovery and triumphant return of this treasured and crown jewel event for this part of the country. God Bless America! God Bless Boston!
