Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers November 2015 Dear Lake Grapevine, Our 16th Annual Double Trouble was endangered by the flooding of Lake Grapevine earlier in the year, but then the water receded and cleared the course for the race. Then came months of dry weather which brought the water down further. So the race was out of danger...or so we thought! Then on the week of the race, the weather forecast showed thunder, lightning and flooding conditions on race day. That caused a lot of worry for the race director, as well as probably lots of annoyance for anyone who would listen at packet pickup about all of the nightmare lightning scenarios. (Sorry about that, by the way.) Of course, it turned out to be a decent day for racing with just a little drizzle during the race. If you notice the race logo, you'll see the sun reflecting off of the flood waters. Maybe for next time, we'll know better than to tempt fate with our logo. Despite the weather worries, we had another recordbreaking turnout for the race we even had 10 people sign up at packetpickup and 19 on race day! The final tally was 686 participants, as compared to 664 last year. The best part was that despite all of the noshows for the race, all of the volunteers, vendors, and sponsors made it out to the race in the rainy conditions. Thank you to all of you for helping put on another incredibly successful race! If you have not already picked up your race shirt or a commemorative Double Trouble glass from Grapevine Craft Brewery, please stop by the clubhouse. There are lots of events coming up this month. There's the Rockledge Rumble on November 14, the Ultracentric Experience November 19 22 at Meadowmere Park, and then we go back to Rockledge Park for the AntiTurkey Trot on November 26. And don't forget to buy your tickets for the RAW Holiday Party on Friday, December 4, at the Palace Arts Theater. You should have received an email on the morning of Monday, October 26 with details on how to buy tickets. The deadline is Monday, November 30. By the way, you can find all of these events and many more on the LGRAW website's new Calendar of Events! This month also marked the Palo Duro Trail Run, a week before Double Trouble. Many RAW folks went out and ran or walked the 20K, 50K and 50mile races. Be sure to check out RAW Assistant Treasurer Belynda Warner's story below about her quest to set a new 50K PR at Palo Duro. As you read this, many of us will already be at the race site for the Dallas Running Club's 40th Annual DRC Half at Norbuck Park in Dallas. Yes, the website for the race is drchalf.com. That might also be the URL that a doctor with the last name Chalf would use, if there were such a person. (See my "testimonial" in last month's Footprint...or don't.) On that note, if you can do better than I can at humor (which is likely), please send your Footprint submissions along to pr@lgraw.com. Please note that this year marks the first time when we will not change our start time after Daylight Saving Time ends. We will keep our start time at 7:00 a.m. yearround. The RAW Board of Directors made this decision at our last meeting. If you would like to get more involved in the workings of the club, attending the 58th RRCA National Convention, just down the road in Dallas, is a great way to do it. If you commit to directing a club race or running for the RAW Board of Directors, the club will even consider reimbursing a portion of your convention fee. If you are interested, please contact me at president@lgraw.com, or we can discuss at the clubhouse. Don't miss In Step With below with Eileen Pontaoe. Not only does Eileen run and volunteer regularly with RAW, she also proofreads the Footprint each month. In fact, she probably read this paragraph before you did! It's nearly time for another RAW race! Registration is now open for the 18th Annual Bold in the Cold 5K & 15K. Hurry so you can get the best deal on registration!
Chris Morris, LGRAW President
