hate CriMe. What is it?
Hate crime is a criminal offense committed in order to express hatred against a group of persons or a person on grounds of age, sex, sexual orientation, disability, race, nationality, language, descent, social status, religion, convictions or views.
hate CriMe forMs
Hate crime may appear in various forms. Hereinafter you may find standard hate crime forms:
● Physical assault;
● Incitement to hatred (bullying, contempt, humiliation);
● Intimidation, threatening;
● Acts of vandalism, property damage;
● Insulting letters and messages;
● Offensive name calling;
● Stalking, harassment (permanent calling or messaging).

Hate crime is prohibited by law. The Criminal Code of the Republic of Lithuania establishes the criminal liability for it:
● Article 170 holds a person liable for public bullying, contempt, urging hatred or inciting discrimination against a group of persons or a person belonging, as well as inciting violence or a physical violent treatment in public;
● Hatred on the ground of sexual orientation is also an aggravating circumstance according to the Article 60 of the Criminal Code. Hence, the hate crime might be any criminal offense providing it is committed on the ground of sexual orientation.
hoW to aCt When the hate CriMe is CoMMitted?
Inform the police or the prosecutor’s office about the hate crime committed:
● Orally or with a written statement by informing the nearest police station or the prosecutor’s office;
● Via the electronic platform ePolicija.lt;
● By calling the emergency phone 112 in case of immediate help.
Cooperate with the police and the prosecutor’s office, provide them with all of the data related to your experience (notes, photographs, other physical material). Trust the law enforcement and its staff – they are on your side!
