TO LGGSSPORT
Welcome to the first of our 2022-23 sports newsletters and a special mention to our new starters and their families.
We started the term with some changes to our PE kit policy, introducing a football style shorts option and an opportunity for students to select from their choice for each activity on offer on the curriculum, rather than been specifically chosen. We have also seen the introduction of a PE Sports Council. Each form, 9, has a form representative who meet regularly to discuss matters, feedback views, and celebrate and promote sport within our LGGS community.
curricular clubs have gone from strength to strength with huge numbers in attendance, which is of no surprise but something we never take for granted. This year we have particularly had a fabulous cohort of Year 10-13 sports leaders who have been committed to helping at lunchtimes: either umpiring netball/ hockey/football games, assisting with gymnastics club, running our dance lunchtime clubs (Junior Dance, Bollywood and Dance Team) or leading our very first volleyball club. Our Sixth Form Sports Team keep a weekly tally on the sports attendance board to record who visits from each form groups and to identify and celebrate top form attendees.
Within the curriculum this term Year 7 and 8 have been taking part in hockey during outdoor lessons and gymnastics whilst indoors. The progress we have seen in hockey has been, well – super sonic and the fundamental skills like the Roll-out, V-drag and Indian Dribble are, I’m not going to lie, top draw. This was reflected in our performance against Ripley St. Thomas during a recent fixture. Indoors, Year 7 have been choreographing a pair gymnastic routine and Year 8 a small group sports-acrobatic sequence to music. We have really been able to take advantage of the new devices within

this topic, using them to record via video and then analyse performance.
Year 9 have moved into hockey games outdoors and had a small taste of tag rugby. Indoors, students learnt a set motif in their ‘Everyone is talking about Jaime’ themed dance scheme of work and then worked on portraying a story of their choice around self-acceptance. They have more recently been learning about well-being and self-love during their yoga sessions.
Year 10 have started their Sports Leaders Award, alongside their recreational lessons and Year 11 have been playing netball and lacrosse this term, braving the cold and sometimes the wet!
This term we have seen extracurricular school sport return with the same intensity and positive vibe that we had pre-pandemic nearly three years ago and, oh boy does it feel good! Inspired by phenomenal sporting stories in the wider world; the incredible Lionesses (and Jill Scott doing her thing in the jungle), the first women’s Rugby League World Cup in England and the remarkable all female officials World Cup game in Qatar - to name but a few. LGGS students have been doing their thing too, both at clubs and fixtures throughout the term. Before I leave you, I want to take this opportunity to thank Miss Bellin, Mrs Russell, Miss Broadfield and Miss Plowman for their passion and dedication throughout 2022 and to all the other staff and students who make everything and anything possible when it comes to offering as much variety to the sports provision we offer at LGGS.
SPORTSATTENDANCE
The PE Department’s Award Scheme, which recognises and rewards individuals for attending extra-curricular sport, started afresh in September. For any individual that attends an LGGS sports’ club or LGGS fixture, they receive one ‘tick’. Over the course of the year, these ‘ticks’ are totalled in July and anyone that matches or surpasses a milestone, will be awarded a certificate and can purchase a £2 badge to sew on to their PE hoodie or t-shirt.

BRONZE 30 clubs SILVER 60 clubs GOLD 90 clubs
At the end of the year pupils will received a badge for their PE hoodie based on how many clubs they have attended during the year.

THE ELF RUN
Fifty students and staff signed up to take part in the ‘Reindeer Rush Elf Run’ for St. John’s Hospice. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions, we had to cancel the event in school but encouraged all those that had signed up to take part in their run over the Christmas holidays.

Well done to everyone that took part and a massive thank you to anyone who has donated via the ‘Just Giving’ page. We have nearly
