Looking on the bright side, one could say that the last few years were a lesson in adaptability, resilience and the importance of humor. With this valuable learning firmly rooted, how refreshing it was this year to focus on a future vision for Ursuline Academy and put plans in place for continued enhancements to the student experience, growth of our community and long term sustainability.

The Ursuline Academy Board of Trustees committed to the creation of a three-year strategic plan guided by a committee of parents, co-workers, Board members and administrators. I’m grateful for the willingness of this group to enter into the tough conversations, dream a bit, and do the hard work of setting priorities. It’s exciting that we have a clear direction for 2023-2025 and I look forward to working alongside everyone in the Ursuline community to achieve it.

What happens next? Activity related to the plan has begun and we will be reporting our progress to the community on a regular basis. We will continue to build on the positive trends we’re seeing in enrollment and fundraising through a combination of traditional activities and new strategies. We will be working hard to assure that you see the very real impact of your support.

In our marketing and communications, you will see a celebration of many types of Bears - athletes, artists, Missouri Scholars, robot builders, Bearista managers and more - and their individual paths to achievement. We are proud to be a school that supports a variety of interests and abilities, where there is no one single “Ursuline girl.” Ursuline is a place where all academically minded young women can find their place. This is our unique niche among girls’ schools in St. Louis.

Areas for our students to explore science and technology will continue to be expanded along with updates to our counseling and campus ministry spaces. We will further develop the opportunities present in our international network of schools and, with the increased involvement of our alumnae, demonstrate for our students the power of a lifelong sisterhood.

Lastly, we will seek creative ways to support parents as their daughters navigate high school life and assure that our co-workers feel valued for their tremendous commitment to Catholic education.

As you can see, we are in a position of strength and there is energy in this plan. Our success lies in new ways of doing things and we’re ready, guided by the words of St. Angela: “Have hope and firm faith in God, for God will help you in everything.”

Thank you for sharing your light at Ursuline Academy!

Getting Sorted

Beginning our second school year with our House System in place, the incoming freshman class, as well as new co-workers and transfer students were officially “sorted” into their House. Each new member of our community was called by name followed by the announcement of their House. From there, they were greeted with cheers and welcome - a special way to begin a new school year.

Personalized Parking

A new senior privilege this year, each senior was assigned a parking spot on the school’s lot and she was allowed to custom-paint her spot for the year. From quotes, to patterns, smiley faces, and favorite songs they each brought brightness and creativity to the parking lot, and were enjoyed all year round!

Freshman Induction

The Freshman Induction ceremony was once again held outside on our back campus. The beautiful tradition has taken on a new significance, as our newest students and their families gather in front of St. Angela and prepare for their next four years at UA.

Foam-tastic Night

Big Sis Lil Sis Lock-In was Glow themed. Pairs dressed up in their brightest outfits, complete with t-shirts they designed together earlier in the week, and enjoyed a night of bonding, crafting, dancing, and spending time together.

Parent Masses

Throughout the 21-22 school year, Ursuline’s Campus Ministry hosted class masses with students and their parents. Each quarter, a class gathered together and took part in a blessing over their parents, and the parents blessed their daughters. It was a meaningful way for our Senior class to begin their last year, and for our Freshman class to end their first.

Who’s House?

The inaugural House Competition Day was a day filled with friendly competition between our four Houses. After playing pickle ball, water bottle relays, lip sync battle and human-sized Tic-Tac-Toe, House Coraggio came out as the overall winner of the day

Sleep Out for Serviam

In the fall of 2021 Ursuline was able to return to our traditional “Cardboard Village,” but this year in partnership with Covenant House, an organization who works with youth experiencing homelessness. 13 students and 4 co-workers participated in this important Sleep Out.

Acing Spirit Week

Returning to more usual-looking celebration, students enjoyed a full spirit week together with the theme “Game Night.” From Monopoly to Mario Cart, to a Candy Land ending, it really was a sweet treat!

National Honor Society

In October, 26 students were inducted into Ursuline’s National Honor Society chapter. The evening was complete thanks to our keynote speaker, Bridget Walsh Moore ’06, who challenged the inductees to change their world.

Youth Leadership STL

Ryan Vannoy ’23, Lindsey Faulkner ’23, Elana Hassman ’23, Bella Ott ’23, Helen Clower ’23, and Franchesca Carapella ’23 participated in the Youth Leadership St. Louis program. The purpose of YLSL is to develop leadership skills, promote teamwork among diverse groups and provide a deeper understanding of the St. Louis region. This meeting’s topic was, “Building Leadership Capacity & Establishing Community.”

Christmas Stockings

United for Justice

Five students took part in the first annual St. Louis Catholic Girls Schools Unite for Justice Conference, hosted by St. Joseph’s Academy. Students participated in discussions, programming, and service with the goal being to collectively create learning opportunities that our students can take back to UA, put faith into action, and build a more just world.

Keeping Up with the Bears Project USS

Our student philanthropy committee, Project U.S.S. was an integral part of our 2021 Giving Tuesday efforts, contributing an additional $3,062.48 from 256 students! The day was truly an outpouring of love, support and fun from their student assembly. Because of the generosity of our UA community, these students and more to come can continue to share their light throughout our community!

This Christmas season marked our twentieth year of partnering with Metro Vision Ministries and the Christmas Stocking Project. This year our community filled 530 bags for children ages 3-15 years, and we were able to pack them up and send them on their way to benefit children in St. Louis City/County and Jefferson County. Originally, our students were given handmade felt Christmas Stockings to fill for children, senior citizens and the homeless. Now our students fill white bags that they decorate for the children of the St. Louis City/County area in the hopes of making their Christmas a bit brighter.

Haiti Packaton

In mid-December, over 400 members of the Ursuline Community, including students, co-workers, parents and alumnae gathered together to pack a total of 41,040 meal kits for families in Haiti. In two hours, participants assembled sealed, packed, and counted each kit until they were all assembled. This year marked the first time we completed this community-wide act of Serviam

Thank you to Tim Traynor from the Crudem Foundation, Regina and Christopher from Feed the Hunger, and a special shout-out to our Campus Ministry team for all the work to make this incredible day happen!

2023 JUNIOR RING CELEBRATING THE LEGACY

In March, members of the Ursuline Class of 2023 gathered together with their parents and alumnae family members to celebrate their Junior Ring Ceremony. The class rings, traditionally set with a bright red gem and engraved with the Ursuline Crest, unite our young women as they prepare to enter their final year of high school, and prepare to take on the responsibility of being the upperclassmen. The rings also symbolize the connection shared between the junior class and the generations of alumnae who came before them.

Molly Newman ’23 felt especially connected to her grandmother, who was a graduate of Arcadia Academy, an Ursuline school located in Arcadia, Missouri, and wore her school ring in honor of the special occasion. Arcadia Academy was built in 1846 as a Methodist High School by Jerome C. Berryman. It wasn’t until 1877 the Ursuline nuns purchased the school and turned it into a girls’ school. The Academy operated as a school until 1970 which marked the last graduating class. The Academy then served as a convent until the Ursuline Sisters were moved to St. Louis in 1985.

The charism of the Ursuline Sisters is a deep bond that unites us all together, from generation to generation. As part of the ceremony, Mallory Montgomery ’23 processed in with her mother Christa (Hansen) Montgomery ’97, offering the traditional Ursuline ring as a symbol of the legacy it carries, and the sisterhood the juniors have joined. The ceremony concluded with a blessing over the class as they prepared for the year to come and their Junior Service projects. We were blessed to return to in-person service opportunities for the Class of 2023’s Junior service projects. It was a wonderful reminder of our Ursuline charism, core values and how they are embodied through our Ursuline women.

Vocation Essay Sweep

In the fall, sophomores in Mrs. Stinehart’s Scriptures class were invited to participate in the Serra Club of St. Louis annual vocation essay contest. Students from all over St. Louis were asked to tell a story about a time a priest, deacon, seminarian or sister influenced their faith, and our Ursuline students swept the standings!

Congratulations to:

Maddie Swip ’24 -- 1st Place

Taylor Zarinelli ’24 -- 2nd Place

Kaitlyn Thole ’24 & Ava Eiler ’24 -- 3rd Place Tie

Model of Justice

Congratulations to Elaina Groneck ’22, who received the “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Model of Justice Award.” This honor is annually awarded to students who demonstrate a commitment to serving humanity in the broader community. We are so proud of Elaina for her leadership in living out our Ursuline values and all the ways she lives out justice!

Archbishop May Service Award

We are excited to announce Ursuline Academy’s recipient of the 2022 Archbishop May Service Award - Leah Anderson! Each year, this honor recognizes the outstanding leadership and community service of a student from each Catholic high school in the St. Louis Archdiocese. Leah has embraced the concept of service as a way of life during her four years at Ursuline. She has been volunteering regularly at the Sr. Christine’s Food Pantry on the St. Joseph Parish campus for over seven years, in addition to her numerous additional service experiences. Leah has a compassionate heart and contemplative spirit and she seeks to connect with those she serves. She brings joy, enthusiasm, and whole-hearted commitment to any task in which she is involved. She is an outstanding example of Serviam, and we are so proud of her.

Language Honor Societies

Félicitations, gratulationes, ¡Felicidades! and congratulations to the 49 students who were inducted into our French, Latin, and Spanish Honor Societies

Service Down South

During spring break, Mrs. Weston along with two other co-workers led ten of our juniors down to New Orleans to volunteer with SBP, a nonprofit disaster relief organization, to help rebuild homes destroyed from hurricane damage. It was a reinvigorating and hopeful experience getting to see the fruits of labor and returning to this experience once again.

Hello, Neighbor!

Ursuline’s Cultural Cooking Club members sponsored an event with Welcome Neighbor STL! Thirty people including students, parents, co-workers, and friends enjoyed a delicious “International Supper” prepared by Badur Mohmaed, a refugee who lived in India, Kuwait, and Iraq. Zohra from Welcome Neighbor STL also gave a beautiful and informative presentation on the non-profit. The supper club started as a way for refugees in the St. Louis area to make an income to help support their families while still being able to care for their children at home. We were grateful to have shared in the meal and good conversations, as well as support Badur and Welcome Neighbor STL.

AROUND THE ACADEMY | THE UA SOIRÉE

We welcomed our community back to campus for a newly rebranded annual auction – The UA Soirée-a true celebration of our Ursuline legacy and community. On March 5, we joined together for a wellearned evening of festivities and supporting our young women. The gym was transformed, complete with food stations, live music, and a room filled with tremendous energy.

The Fund-a-Need supported enhanced outdoor learning and gathering spaces, focusing on improvements to the Hartnett Hall Patio and The Tapestry Garden Patio. Both spaces are now complete with upgraded furniture and restored foundations, perfect for hosting, social gatherings, outdoor lunches and classroom activities. Already this fall, our parent clubs hosted numerous events on the patios, including Moms and Margaritas, and the Fathers’ Club BBQ. Thank you to the Ursuline Academy Fathers’ Club for their generous financial contribution to restore our historic bell. We are so grateful to all those who supported this cause and made it a reality. The Class of 2026 started a new tradition, in which each student rang this historic bell in the Tapestry Garden to symbolize the official start of her Ursuline Journey. It was a beautiful way to welcome this class into our Ursuline legacy.

NEVER

SAY

Goodbye

IN GRATITUDE FOR OUR RETIREES

After 27 years of service to the Academy, we extend our gratitude to Colleen McCorry and Terri Rogan, for all the ways they have shared their time, gifts and Serviam spirit with the Ursuline community.

Colleen McCorry, Chair of the Counseling Department, guided countless students over her years at Ursuline. She helped students manage their schedules, their stress, and their pathways to their future. She worked with co-workers to implement mindfulness and encourage stable mental health in and outside of the classroom. She was an integral part of Ursuline’s mission to develop the whole person, keeping her students at the heart of everything she did. While she will be greatly missed in the halls of UA, retirement calls and rest and relaxation are in her future. Her helping heart will be missed.

Throughout her 27 years at Ursuline, Terri Rogan had her heart and hands in several of Ursuline’s traditions, including new coworker retreats, student retreats, and liturgy and Graduation services just to name a few. Terri served as the Director of Mission Effectiveness, working closely with the President and Principal to maintain and integrate the Academy’s philosophy, mission, and vision in all aspects of the community, in addition to working with our Campus Ministry team in guiding faith formation for students. She always had a smile on her face and an open-door policy, as many of students over the years could attest to. In a word, Terri was a testament to what it meant to live out our Ursuline motto of Serviam. Through her example of living out the Ursuline charism, Terri has shared the spirit of St. Angela with countless students, co-workers, and members of the Ursuline community. In retirement she shifts her helping heart to others in the community.

As an Ursuline community, we are immensely grateful for the dedication and service both Colleen and Terri have demonstrated to the Ursuline Mission. We wish them all the best and congratulations on their next chapters!

Serviam A SUMMER OF

An Ursuline woman and her family are sharing in St. Angela’s spirit with a creative twist for children in Punta Gorda, Belize.

Julie Burke Kuhnert ’96, founder of Camp Creative along with her family, enjoys serving the children of Punta Gorda with the creative arts. The summer of 2022 marked 10 years for Julie and her family of ministering to children and families, connecting with communities and sharing in creating, culture, and service. This year, she was joined by alumna and current Ursuline mom Jennifer Lueken Delf ’95 along with her daughter Abby Delf ’23 and classmate Kaili Hebrank ’23 as camp volunteers. With a total of 18 American and Belize teachers and volunteers the camp served almost 200 children in Punta Gorda and Big Falls village from June 26 through July 15. This was the first year that the camp was able to host two sessions, and have the opportunity to serve more children from the significantly more isolated communities.

Through the support of her family, volunteers and donations, the Kuhnert family travel with nearly thirty bags each summer when they make the trip to Belize. They pack and provide all the art supplies for the children who attend camp, as well as back packs, school supplies and additional donations for the local schools. Each summer is spent providing a creative outlet to the children, working closely with them and their teachers as they create jar lanterns, tie dye, paintings, and coffee filter rainbows.

“So very much goes on behind the scenes, all year long, to help Camp Creative be such a great opportunity for others. [It’s]truly a grassroots effort,” said the family reflecting on 10 years of ministry. “It is a true team effort, and unique among volunteer programs for this model.”

We are thrilled to see these Ursuline global connections, and grateful for all the ways these women are sharing the spirit of Serviam with the world!

The legacy continues! The 2021-2022 admissions cycle was one for the books, culminating in an exciting and energized class of future Bears to plan for. In the Fall, each school hosted Virtual High School nights, in order for prospective families to get to know students and teachers from the comfort of their home. Ursuline partnered with the eight additional all-girls school to form the All-Girls School Alliance, an in-person high school fair experience in which 250+ families came onto campus interested in learning more about our school community.

When Letter Day arrived it was truly a special day for the Class of 2026! Each new Bear was greeted at home with a celebration package, complete with a red confetti cannon and special Ursuline swag and spirit.

And the fun and celebrations didn’t stop there. The following day, Ursuline hosted it’s official Celebration Day during which the incoming class was able to gather together, do some Bear Den shopping, and take photos with Ursa Bear. Organized by the Bear Moms, it was a wonderful start of their UA journeys.

The spirit and excitement already felt by these young ladies is a testament to the Ursuline sisterhood.

In my physics class this year with Dr. Anderson, we wrote a paper on why God is light. As it turns out, there is a cogent relationship between the two. To put it simply, both share a unique dual nature, both have potent life-sustaining abilities, and both are omnipresent as light transcends time. If God is truly light, then that means that He is everywhere because light is everywhere. My advice to you is to nd God in your darkest times; nd the light when there appears to be none, because I promise you, it is there.

CELEBRATING Reunions

We are forever Ursuline, and we are forever grateful to be able to come together as a community. The first weekend in October was filled with celebrations, connecting, and community as we celebrated our Alumnae Spirit Day encompassing reunions, memorials, and sisterhood. Having spent a year apart during the Covid 19 pandemic, reunions took on a special meaning as gatherings began to return to normal, and classes who would have been celebrating in 2020 were also able to reconnect and return to campus to take part in the celebrations.

The Alumnae Association hosted a beautiful weekend, beginning with a ceremony honoring our 2021 Alumnae Award recipients. Theresa Kaiser ’07 and Liz Kaiser Dwyer ’10 were chosen as the Distinguished Alumnae, for their leadership in getting the Ursuline Varsity Soccer to winning the State Championship. Madeline Senay ’12 was chosen as the Young Alumna Serviam Award recipient for her work as a Peace Corps Youth Development Volunteer in Ukraine and all the ways she embodies our Ursuline value of Serviam

After the awards ceremony, the “Toast for Tradition” luncheon took place, a lovely gathering for alums who celebrated 50 or more years since their Ursuline graduation. Memories, school songs, and many laughs were shared over a champagne toast. Tours of campus followed as did our tree dedication for the beloved Thelma Hartnett which introduced our memorial Mass in the afternoon. Later that evening, music, food trucks, Narwhal’s Crafted bar, campus tours, spirit shopping, and overdue celebrations filled the night.

The following day we hosted a virtual “Bear Walk,” a fun run/walk to encourage alumnae spirit from anywhere in the world. Groups of alumnae and classmates met up for a walk together, and others shared it with their daughters and families. It was a complete weekend full of Ursuline spirit and sisterhood.

“LOVED our 50th reunion celebration. I really enjoyed getting a tour of all the new things at the school and the classrooms and the biology and science labs. Loved the tribute to Thelma Hartnett.”

Influential Bears in Business

This year we had two Ursuline alumnae recognized in St. Louis Business Journal’s 2021 Class of Most Influential Business Women. Erin (Rieck) Valentine ’95 is vice president of business development at McCarthy Holdings, where she manages a business development team that builds relationships with clients and partners in the company’s core building markets of health care, education, advanced technology, and manufacturing. The honorees have made an impact not only in the industries in which they work but at local nonprofits and in the communities they represent.

VALUABLE ALUMNAE UPDATES

Career Day

In the spring semester the Alumnae Association was thrilled to be able to return to our usual programing and welcome 30+ alumnae back onto campus for student career day. Dr. Dena Basler McCaffrey ’88 began the day as our Key Note Speaker, followed by the opportunity for each student to attend three sessions. Students had the chance to engage with professionals in different fields, by asking questions and learning about the specific paths, education, and skills needed to succeed in their field of interest. Career Day takes place every two years so that students have two chances to hear from professionals, as well as be exposed to a variety of pathways and studies, supporting the Alumnae Association’s goal of establishing valuable connections amongst our Ursuline alumnae.

Rosé for UA!

URSULINE VALUABLE CONNECTIONS GROUP

Over the summer the Alumnae Association hosted Rosé for UA at Wild Crush Wine Barn, to kick off the warmer months and launch the new Alumnae Board! We were so grateful to spend the evening with fellow alumnae and members of the Alumnae Association Board of Directors cheersing to the upcoming school year. We are extra grateful to Lexie Paslawski ’12, Caitlin Margaret Browne ’06, and Kelly Balch Jobe ’01 for their support in making the night happen. We’re looking forward to the new year, and all the exciting things our alumnae will continue to do!

Excellence in Nursing

In the spring of 2021, Deborah Altman Horton ’93 was honored with the St. Louis Magazine’s Excellence in Nursing award for Community/ Ambulatory Care. In addition she also was awarded the 2021 Sigma Theta Tau Delta Lambda Chapter Mae Hamilton Excellence Award. In the fall of 2020, she organized and orchestrated weekly COVID-19 testing to monitor the prevalence of the virus among students on SLU’s campus. “Her motivation, desire, and knowledge have provided a sound basis as a public health leader not only in the SLU community but to the larger St. Louis community,” said one colleague.

HONORING Petruska's PLACE

As we approached the end of our 21-22 Athletic Season, Ursuline’s Athletic Department had the opportunity to be a part of a special day and honor an alumnae for her dedication, service, and leadership to the Academy and our athletic programs.

Amy Petruska ’00 has served as the Head Coach for Ursuline’s Varsity Softball team for nine seasons, as well as the Assistant Coach of the Varsity Lacrosse team for three seasons. For her years of influence and leadership, in partnership with the December 5th Fund, on May 10, 2022, the home dugout of Ursuline softball field was dedicated to Amy as “Petruska’s Place.” The sign hangs on the fence, and serves as a reminder of her dedication as she entered into her 10th season as a coach.

“As an Ursuline alumna, their longest tenured softball coach, and a person that has given so much of herself to the school, it was truly powerful to see so many friends, family, and former players show up for her well-deserved recognition,” said Thomas Wiley, Executive Director of the December 5th Fund.

The December 5th Fund’s mission is to give a day without worry to families whose loved one is afflicted with cancer and currently undergoing active cancer treatment. Through the Great Day and Helping Hands Support Plan programs, The December 5th Fund creates once-in-a-lifetime memories for families affected by cancer and provides ongoing support for the family as they continue the long journey through treatment.

Alumnae Awards DISTINGUISHED

Each year two awards are given to outstanding Ursuline Academy St. Louis Alumnae.

The Distinguished Alumna Award: Presented to an alumna who exemplifies in her public and private life the Christian ideals and standards of Ursuline, for distinguished service in her profession or to her community or to Ursuline Academy.

The Young Alumna Serviam Award: This annual award honors an outstanding alumna who, through her service, leadership and achievement, embodies the Serviam spirit of an Ursuline Academy education.

A remarkable way that Toni has shown leadership is through how much she values relationships. She is constantly connecting people to one another and creating excitement around new ideas and seeing them through.

As a life-long volunteer and community leader, Toni’s dedication to service has impacted the lives of hundreds in the St. Louis area. Toni has dedicated her time to her parish, Mary Queen of Peace and through her service as a former elected City Councilwoman of Webster Groves, she was instrumental in city planning and economic development. One of Toni’s biggest passions has been the support of Marian Middle School where she led many fundraising efforts to help build up future female leaders. Toni’s leadership and dedication to her communities, her dedication and to the Ursuline way of Serviam all make the community proud to recognize her as the 2022 recipient of the Distinguished Alumna award.

Throughout her life, Rachel has lived by the words of St. Angela Merici and used her care and leadership to build community wherever she went.

Now working as a regional resident services coordinator, she loves and cares for her residents every day and brings joy to their lives by finding out what each person would find meaningful. Through the pandemic, not only did she bring her residents Holy Communion, she brought them to doctor visits, or out for a drive. She was a critical lifeline to their families and inspires others by saying, “Gotta live out that Serviam.” Rachel is a testament to the Ursuline motto of Serviam, and the community is proud to recognize her as the 2022 recipient of the Young Alumna Serviam award.

Do you know an outstanding alumna? Someone who lives out the Ursuline values of service, courtesy, loyalty and courage, by attitude and action? Nominate her for an Ursuline Alumnae Award!

CELEBRATING Generosity

Donna G. Bokamper Casalone RN Ursuline Class of 1974

In the spring of 2022, Gregory and Donna Casalone decided to share their passion for their healthcare careers with Ursuline Students. Established through a planned gift to Ursuline, the Casalones created a scholarship for Ursuline students who plan to pursue a career in nursing. Such a gift allows Greg and Donna to not only share their passion with Ursuline, but also leave an impact on the next generation of Ursuline women in a big way. We asked Donna to share a bit more about the impact Ursuline had on her life, and how she came to the decision to establish this generous gift for our Ursuline students.

How would you describe Ursuline Academy in a few words?

Ursuline Academy offers a Catholic Secondary Education to all girls and promotes an environment for girls to nurture their abilities to grow academically, emotionally, and spiritually. Ursuline Academy provides a quality education that will help the girls to succeed in higher education opportunities and future careers.

What is unique about Ursuline to you?

Ursuline Academy was my high school. I loved that it was an all-girl high school offering lifelong friendships and nurtured my love for the sciences and my faith. Ursuline helped to give me a foundation so I was able to further my education to attain my RN Degree and fulfill my dream of helping others as a Nurse. “I Will Serve”.

Can you explain how this idea sparked between you and Greg?

Gregory and I have always had a passion and a love for our occupations. He always knew that he wanted to be a Dentist and I knew that I wanted to be a Nurse from the age of 7. We have always wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. I have loved my nursing career. As we grow older, we realized that my husband, Gregory Casalone D.D.S. and I will not be here forever. Recently, I have had some health challenges. We felt like we wanted to revise our estate plan and make sure it was handled with our desired wishes leaving our inheritance to our 2 Sons and 3 Grandchildren. But we also wanted our family to know how important it was to “Give Back” and continue to make a difference in the world long after we are gone.

How did you hope this planned gift could help future Ursuline students?

We thought long and hard about how we could set an example for others and decided to establish a Nursing Scholarship Fund to help a deserving Senior financially each year at Ursuline Academy who would like to further her education by attaining a BSN in Nursing. My love for Nursing would be passed on to Generations of Nurses to come who will go on to help others and live out the Ursuline motto “I will Serve”. It is truly an honor and a privilege for me and my husband to make this contribution to Ursuline Academy. We hope others will consider making a financial contribution to Ursuline in a way that will help carry on the Ursuline traditions helping future generations too. We all want to help make this world a better place.

Planned Giving helps secure the Ursuline Legacy for the next generation of young women.

If you’re interested in including Ursuline in your estate plan, please contact Kim Vogt, Director of Advancement 314.984.2814 or kvogt@ursulinestl.org

I was so grateful I was able to attend the same school as my mom. Even though our experiences were different, we still are able to share similar stories. My UA experience means family. I have grown as a person and met best friends along the way. UA is a my second family.

SisterhoodCELEBRATING THE BONDS OF

Jackie Greener Puetz, UA class of 1947, truly left a legacy in the hearts and minds of her children. Her love for Ursuline was evident to us growing up and continued through the next generation of grandchildren as well. She fondly told us stories of her first day where she met her dearest friend for life along with many other friends. One of their favorite activities was skating on the pond on the beautiful Ursuline campus.

Our mom remained connected to Ursuline over the years celebrating many alumnae functions, including her 50th class reunion with friends. Her appreciation for the educational and Serviam opportunities that Ursuline still offers to all students, remained a constant in her life. Based on our mom’s high school experience, our parents were committed to providing the same opportunity for their daughters. Although there were sacrifices, our parents valued the UA experience as a top priority, making every effort to accomplish that end. They also showed us the importance of giving back, which sparked the idea of honoring our parents by establishing a scholarship in their name. What better way to show their love for the school than by contributing to the education of future Ursuline students. Our family hoped that this scholarship would provide the opportunity for someone to attend Ursuline, who might not have been able to attend without it.

Our family would describe Ursuline in many different ways, since there were six daughters and seven granddaughters who have followed in Jackie’s footsteps to date. As we know, over the years the school uniform, song, and mascot have changed based on which generation one asks. However, we would all agree with these three, fundamental descriptions of an Ursuline experience: quality Catholic education, Serviam, and sisterhood. These Ursuline tenets that were true seventy-five years ago for our mom are still just as evident on the Ursuline campus today, building women of faith, strength, and character. And our family is grateful to be a part of Ursuline’s past and future.

A reflection written by the daughters of Jackie A. Puetz ’47, (Nancy Ruzicka ’73, Carol Wilmes ’89, Joan Hannegan ’82, Susan Lenihan ’71, Ellen Wojcicki ’69, and Joyce DiStefano ’78) honoring her Ursuline legacy.

If you’re interested in establishing a named scholarship, please contact Kim Vogt, Director of Advancement 314.984.2814 or kvogt@ursulinestl.org

CELEBRATING Generosity

Jobe Ursuline Class of 2001

Kelly is a Pediatric Dentist based in Sunset Hills. After attending Ursuline, she went on to the University of Missouri at Kansas City (UMKC) for dental school. Afterwards, she continued her education with an additional two residency rotations in pediatrics at Children’s Mercy Hospital, also located in Kansas City. Once complete, Dr. Jobe and her husband decided to return home to practice and raise their family. She has been among the ‘Top Dentists’ chosen by peers and featured in St. Louis Magazine for the past four years. We asked her about her Ursuline experience, and why she chooses to give back to Ursuline today.

1. Kelly, tell us about yourself.

My family and I live here in St. Louis. My husband, Jeff, is a structural engineer and I am a pediatric dentist. We have two kids, Peyton (8) and Jackson (6). Both kids are busy with soccer and baseball/softball and the occasional other sport thrown in there. We love to spend time outside on the water, with friends and take vacations.

I opened a new private practice, Kids Smiles, located in Sunset Hills in 2022. I worked with a great team of engineers and designers to bring my vision to life. Having a great team, a clear budget and defined timeline were so important to our success. We look forward to growing into our space and providing technologically advanced care to those we serve.

My office is limited to pediatrics and offers comprehensive care for kids from ages 0-18 years of age. The office is full of natural light, fun colors and entertainment for the kids. We are able to offer preventative and restorative care, along with interceptive orthodontics. We partner with a great group of anesthesiologists to provide comfortable care for kids with lots of treatment needs or special healthcare needs.

2. How do you feel your Ursuline experience prepared you for college and your career?

Attending Ursuline was excellent preparation for college and beyond. Ursuline offered opportunities for academic and personal growth in a supportive environment. With a variety of classes and options for increased depth into them, I was able to arrive at college with knowledge of where my strengths and interests aligned. The A/B schedule of days also prepared me for the college academic schedule where your day and commitments are unique to you. That aspect only increases as you get into your career and handle your day and responsibilities based on what is needed from you.

The values of community and service as cornerstones of an Ursuline education have become important parts of each stage of my life. Whether it was college and making new friends, dental school and new classmates or a new position and colleagues, connection to community has made each of these more impactful. There are many paths to choose in life, but I’ve found that the one that helps benefit the lives of people around you also has the same effect on your own life.

3. Why is financially supporting Ursuline important to you?

I’ve always considered the relationships, education and opportunities I received at Ursuline to be building blocks of my life. I still talk to multiple friends I made at Ursuline daily. I’m so thankful for the confidence and experiences it provided me. I hope I can help to provide those for other young women.

URSULINE ACADEMY ANNUAL GIVING

Ursuline Academy honors our donors through recognition in an annual honor roll celebrating the generosity of alumnae, parents, faculty, staff, and friends. Their gifts support Academy operations, fund scholarships and faculty resources, and help secure Ursuline’s future. The following donors made a pledge or gift from July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022.

The Thelma Hartnett Heritage Society

We are thrilled to honor Thelma Hartnett’s legacy of philanthropy with the newly named Thelma Hartnett Heritage Society. The Thelma Hartnett Heritage Society honors alumnae, parents, and friends who have invested in Ursuline Academy’s future through planned gifts. These gifts include bequest provisions in a will or trust, gifts of life insurance and beneficiary designations. We are eternally grateful to those who have made arrangements that endure beyond their own lifetimes.

My Ursuline experience means a great deal to me. I was always told that you discover yourself in high school and you do. I was able to grow and develop my beliefs and values. And overall, discover who I am. And there is still more room for development, but being able to find comfort in myself now has helped me create a great Ursuline experience.

Ending the 21-22 Fiscal year, Ursuline Academy participated in the second annual St. Louis Catholic Girls Schools Unite giving challenge.

Eight of the all-girl Catholic high schools in St. Louis joined forces from June 14-16, encouraging their alumnae to support their respective alma maters through monetary donations. The school with the highest percentage of alumnae participating would be declared the winner.

The schools, on average, see just 10% of their alumnae contribute financially in any given year. Each school has a common goal to increase their percentage of alumnae support.

“Bragging rights are up for grabs, but we are ultimately inviting our collective alumnae to join us in choosing unity over competition for this challenge,” said Katie Balek Kempf ’01, Alumnae Relations Coordinator at Ursuline. “We are rooted in different charisms, but we remain overwhelmingly more united than we are different in our work, to provide life-changing educational experiences for the young women we serve.”

Katie worked to organize the challenge with representatives from eight schools in St. Louis, after hearing of the united alumnae efforts from other Ursuline schools in Louisville and Cincinnati.

While we did not place in the top standings in the competition, in three days 432 Ursuline alumnae raised $15,306.70 for student scholarships. We saw participation from both long and first-time supporters, showcasing a legacy of Ursuline spirit.

We are so grateful to everyone who gave, shared, texted a friend, and rallied behind the campaign. We’re looking forward to the future of GSU, and continuing to build up our alumnae giving and making a come back in the new year!

Be on the look out for our Summer 2023 campaign and plan to participate in this friendly competition!

My Ursuline experience means a lot to me because I know it’s a sacrifice for my parents to send me here. It’s been a great four years, and it’s something I can always look back on and think positively about it.

Unique Ways to Increase the Impact of Your Gift

IRA Charitable Rollover Gift

If you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a simple way to benefit Ursuline Academy and receive tax benefits in return. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to Ursuline Academy without having to pay income taxes.

Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see its impact on today’s students. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions. If you have not yet taken the required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.

A Gift of Stocks

Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds, or other securities will generate a tax deduction based on the value of the security on the date of the gift. With longterm appreciated securities, you will receive a charitable income tax deduction for the full fair-market value of your gift and avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation.

A Gift in Your Will or Living Trust

A simple, flexible, and versatile way to ensure Ursuline Academy will continue its mission for years to come is a gift in your will or living trust, known as a charitable bequest.

For more information on making a gift to Ursuline Academy, please contact Kim Vogt at 314-984-2814.
