A Letter from our
President
Ms. Peggy Slater As I reflect on the last year, I am beyond grateful for everything we have accomplished as a community, and optimistic for the year to come. The flexibility and creativity demonstrated by students and coworkers throughout all the challenges presented to them as a result of the COVID19 pandemic has been truly inspiring. Our school theme for the year was “Creating New Possibilities” and we lived it fully! I’m proud to say that initially, the abrupt change to distance learning in the spring was manageable because the technology was already in place and in use by many of our faculty. Your support made that possible. We’ve also worked hard to provide as much of the high school experience as possible from a safe distance. Delivering yard signs provided coworkers a welcomed opportunity to see students and families after weeks apart. And as we reimagined traditional ceremonies, parents and alumnae took on new roles such as leading the blessing at Junior Ring and presenting diplomas at Graduation. There have been many joys all along this complicated journey together. We have learned a great deal and see opportunities to create new traditions, new possibilities for the classroom experience and new ways to generate the financial support the Ursuline needs to continue delivering a high quality education. This year, our nation and community have again been faced with the issue of social justice, central to the charism of the Ursuline Sisters. My attention continues to be on having as many girls as possible experience the benefits of an Ursuline education, girls of all socio-economic backgrounds and races, and that Ursuline be a financially viable option for years to come. St. Angela tells us that when “the need arises to make new rules or do something differently, do it prudently and with good advice.” As I write this letter today, uncertainty regarding the pandemic remains, but it is clear that the Ursuline community will thrive. You are receiving this annual report because you have helped make it possible for us to live St. Angela’s words during the past year. The theme this year is “Together at Heart.” I’m confident that physical distance will not stand in the way of Ursuline students, families, alumnae and coworkers coming together to face all that comes our way with a spirit of service, courtesy, loyalty and courage. Scots Song 2019 A Musical Residency Written by: Mr. Jay Harkey The UA vocal and instrumental students once again participated in our annual Scots Song residency during the first half of October. This residency is provided by the Scottish Partnership for Arts in Education (SPAE for short). SPAE, under the executive direction of Diane McCullough, brings in teaching artists who are noted performers in the field of Scottish folk song and also facilitates fiddle residencies in other schools. We were delighted to welcome Jil Chambless from Tuscaloosa, Alabama back for her second year. Jil is a math professor during the week, but on weekends travels all over the country and occasionally the world singing and playing flute with various groups. This year the instrumental students were involved as well and worked to develop arrangements based upon the materials Jil sent in preparation. Our vocal students worked to figure out some harmonies, besides learning the tunes and lyrics to all eleven songs! This was our most ambitious program yet, both in scope and complexity of our arrangements. I was very pleased with how our UA students responded to this challenge both in terms of the learning process and our culminating concert with Jil. The songs chosen for this year’s residency represented a wide range from Scottish song repertoire, from the Robert Burns classic “Scot’s Wha Hae” (an unofficial national anthem of Scotland) to relatively modern songs written in the 1960s by luminaries of the folk revival such as Ewan MacColl and Ed Pickford. Other songs chosen were American variants of songs originally from Scotland that immigrants brought with them. We also paid tribute to Hamish Henderson, who is an extremely important figure in the Scottish folk revival. This year marks the centenary of his birth. We sang his song “Freedom Come All Ye” which is set to a Scottish bagpipe tune called “The Bloody Fields of Flanders” and is in a heavy Scot’s dialect. Even though the songs have their origins in Scotland they do not express a eurocentric viewpoint. In fact, the theme that runs through almost all of the songs is sticking up for the oppressed, whoever that may be, both in your own neighborhood and in our global village. Providing students with experiences of this type is an extremely beneficial component of their musical development and their overall musical and cultural literacy.
Students Attend Global Luncheon Educating Global Citizens At Ursuline, we prepare our students for living and leading in a global society. Back in October, four of our students, Erin Fagan ’21, Maggie Laux ’21, Maggie Naeger ’21 and Anne Rater ’21, along with Terri Rogan, Ursuline’s Director of Mission Effectiveness had the opportunity to attend the Growing Global Luncheon hosted by the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership and the World Trade Center St. Louis. The topic of the luncheon was the diplomatic relations between the U.S. and China. “This day for our Ursuline students and myself was filled with opportunities to learn more about what it means to live and lead in a global society,” said Terri Rogan afterwards. The students were introduced to some of the issues which can take place when two different cultures, with common as well as differing values, come together in an effort to connect in business relations, academic and research goals, health care, and interpersonal relationships. They were welcomed by Tim Nowak, Executive Director for the World Trade Center, and also connected with Erica Visconti May ’10. “I thought the day was informational and exciting. I learned a lot about why I should be involved and engaged in global issues. It was very eye-opening for me,” said Maggie Naeger ’21.
Inaugural Top of the Class Award For Outstanding Service with Youth In Action On Thursday Dec. 5th, Ursuline Academy was honored with the inaugural “Top of the Class” Service Award presented by Youth In Action. Youth In Action Executive Director, Keith Rawlings, presented the award at an all school assembly. State Rep. Deb Lavender attended to present the official proclamation on behalf of the Missouri State House of Representatives. Also in attendance, Wallace Ward on behalf of the Mayor of Kirkwood, Timothy E. Griffin, and Jaci Winship on behalf of Missouri Congresswoman Ann Wagner. Youth In Action is a non-profit 501(c)3. Members range from 6th to 12th grade from schools in St. Louis City and County. Youth In Action’s mission is to promote responsible citizenship for youth through rewarding volunteer service to the community. Ursuline Academy has partnered with Youth In Action for over ten years through community service and has accomplished thousands of hours of volunteering and assisting with programs such as Make A Wish, Friends of Kids With Cancer, Operation Backpack, Shop With A Cop, GreenTree Festivals, fundraising efforts and more. Over 72 Ursuline Academy students have been involved. “The students of Ursuline Academy are a great example to their peers and community through their dedication and loyalty to helping others in need.” said Rawlings. “Out of the 13 middle schools and high schools in St. Louis that partner with Youth in Action, Ursuline students have shown the most outstanding character and willingness to serve.”

Chloe Hayes ’20 MLK Model of Justice Award
Intro to Robotics Homework - Building a Robot
On Sunday January 19, Chloe Hayes ’20 received the “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Model of Justice Award.” She received this prestigious honor at the 44th annual Mass for the Preservation of Peace and Justice, which commemorates the birth and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This event is held at the Cathedral with Mass and followed by an award presentation and reception.
This past fall, the science department offered a new course called “Introduction to Robotics”. The purpose of this class was to prepare girls who were interested in joining the robotics team, Ursuline Bearbotics, which started up their new season in January. Many students do not enter high school with a background in operating tools, wiring electronics or programming a robot, so by offering this course, students have the opportunity to learn and gain confidence in robotics that make joining the team a more feasible possibility. The course itself was designed to provide them with an introduction to the types of skills essential to the craft so that they could have a familiar advantage once the FIRST robotics season began. This was the first year we were able to see the progression from students taking the course in the fall to joining the team in the spring semester. It was clear that those girls came into the season and the meetings with a lot more confidence! They were able to jump right in and be a part of the team without the extreme learning curve that typically occurs. Because of the hands-on education the girls are gaining by being a part of the team, they are also able to receive academic credit for their time. Since the beginning of the season, the team had been working tirelessly to build this year’s robot for the competition, Infinite Recharge. Unfortunately due to COVID-19, their competition season was put on hold, but the team continued to tweak and work on the robot when they could. The team will compete in summer 2021. The team has been staying busy preparing for their next opportunity to compete, but they’re confident they will be ready with their next creation.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Model of Justice Award is an annual award for a noble cause. The St. Charles Lwanga Center, in conjunction with the Archdiocese of St. Louis, annually presents this award to a high school student from each school who has demonstrated through their attitude and their work a commitment to serving humanity in the broader community. These students have made justice a central part of their life and have committed themselves “to the noble struggle for equal rights.” We are proud of Chloe for her commitment to raising awareness of the injustices in our world and striving to make a difference!
Claire Stinehart ’20 Archbishop May Service Award Claire’s desire to give of her time and talents is evident in the almost 700 hours of service she has completed during her past four years. The number is not important to her though; instead, it is a symbol of her desire to be connected with the community and with those in need. Just a few of her service experiences include volunteering at Whole Kids Outreach in Ellington, MO, Hand in Hand Ministries in Auxier, KY, St. Bernard Project in New Orleans and the Camp Rainbow summer program. Locally, she volunteers at Eugene Slay Boys and Girls Club, St. Louis Life Teen and United Hope Church. Claire also spends countless hours helping with various Ursuline programs. Claire connected to our motto of Serviam early on and has embraced the concept of service as a way of life during her four years at Ursuline. She brings joy, enthusiasm, and whole-hearted commitment to any task in which she is involved. She is a true model of Serviam for our school community and for the greater St. Louis community.
The S.A.M. Award Alumnae in Healthcare You may remember last year’s story about the S.A.M. award, in which the lacrosse team created the award to recognize a player on the opposing team for their sportsmanship, athleticism, and maturity. Though this year’s spring season has drastically changed, the team still wanted to continue to recognize those who inspire them, but this season with a new twist. This year, the team wanted to focus on recognizing those who are examples of what it means to live out the Ursuline spirit of Serviam. For the first recipient of the 2020 S.A.M. award, the lacrosse team chose to recognize all the alumnae who are working on the front lines in the healthcare field and for the sacrifices they have made during this pandemic. The team created a video message that was sent out to these alumnae to let them know of their inspiration. We continue to keep all of our alumnae and extended Ursuline family members who work in healthcare in our prayers. We are so proud and pray for the health and safety for all those who live out our Ursuline motto of Serviam each and every day. May God bless and watch over you!
Cheer Team Success From State to Nationals
Mock Trial Club A Year of Firsts In its first year, Ursuline’s Mock Trial team continues to impress. Growing in skill and recognition as they competed and won both their first and secondround matches of the St. Louis Regional Preliminary competition of the Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition. The team moved on to the Region Finals in the first week of March.
For a group of Bears that do a lot of cheering, our Ursuline Cheer Team earned some for themselves this season. The team worked hard and consistently all year creating a strong bond as sisters and teammates. That combination brought them to place 3rd in the State Competition held in St. Charles in November. On their road to Nationals, the team earned a number of awards at the NCA Midwest Open Championship including: 1st place in intermediate performance routine, 1st place band chant, 1st place cheer, 1st place fight song, best use of stunts, best use of tumbling, and most spirited! They also won the Herkie High Point award, the highest score of the entire competition, and the Go Be Great Award for the team’s service hours and their spirit of giving back to the community! The following month the team went on to place 6th at the National competition in Dallas, Texas, after three days of competing.
One of the great things to come from this hardworking team is a mentoring relationship with Nina Sykora ’08. After graduating from Ursuline, Nina earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Dayton in 2012. She then went on to earn her J.D. from The John Marshall Law School in 2015. Nina currently serves as an associate at Brown & James, practicing at the firm’s St. Louis office. Joni Mullen, Assistant Principal and moderator of the Mock Trial Team, had this to say about Nina and her work with the team: “When asked if she would help with Ursuline’s first mock trial team she immediately jumped on board. She has been a great coach and mentor for the girls and she brings a wealth of professional experience and knowledge as an attorney. Interestingly enough we found out that she was on a traveling mock trial team while she was in law school so she was very familiar with how the competitions work. She has given so much of her time and energy over the past several months. She has lead weekly meetings at Ursuline with Ursuline parent Chris Lawhorn and continuously provides feedback for the team through one-on-one mentoring. She helps students during their practices, but beyond that, she is always giving feedback through emails outside of their meetings. She helps them with their questioning and arguments. She even sends them little attorney moment videos from movies to help lighten their spirits which they love. Probably the best part about Nina is that she has served as a great role model for our students.” Nina’s willingness to live out Serviam in her work with the team is an incredible gift that our students greatly treasure. We are grateful for her expertise, time, and service back to Ursuline and our students.
Celebration Day for the Class of 2024 Welcoming the Newest UA Class We kicked off 2020 by welcoming our 91 members of the Ursuline Academy Class of 2024! The class represents nearly 8 regions of St. Louis which includes 35 different zip codes! Our newest Bears received a special delivery of signs to display in their front yard, and came together at Ursuline to celebrate the next day-not to mention clear out the Bear Den and the Bearista Cafe! We are thrilled and are looking forward to the many gifts this new class of young women will add to the rich tradition of our school.

Lights On at 20:20 Honoring our Seniors on Prom Night On April 10, 2020, the Ursuline Academy campus turned on all the lights at 8:20 p.m. (20:20) for 20 minutes and 20 seconds to honor the Class of 2020. Each subsequent Friday, as the school was lit up, members of the senior class began coming to campus to drive through the circle drive to see, with more seniors and students coming each time. Plans for the class’ prom night were changed and postponed, until it was ultimately canceled due to the pandemic. The night that would have been prom fell on a Friday, so to show their love and support of the class, members of our co-worker community planned a surprise to make the night something special. They came to campus with posters, roses and open hearts. Though not the prom night they envisioned, the night was bright and emotional, with co-workers getting to see students in person again and feeling the out pouring of love and support.
The Gift of Presence Senior Salute for the Class of 2020 When the Alumnae Association Induction ceremony needed to be re-imagined due to the pandemic, the Ursuline co-workers and over 100 alumnae made sure that the day remained a special occasion. We traded the tradition of the chapel setting for the driveways of our Class of 2020. With the seniors and their families in front of their homes, they were greeted by the sounds of cars honking and Ursuline flags flying in a parade of cars. The seniors, dressed in their uniform skirts and blue senior polos for the last time, received an Ursuline gift bag which included their Cap and Gown, gifts, and a large assortment of letters written by alumnae welcoming them to the Alumnae Association. The ceremony began with a welcome, followed by a reading from St. Angela’s writings. The parents followed with a prayer of thanksgiving over their daughter, and the alumnae present participated in the formal induction into the Alumnae Association with a candle and prayer. We closed with the Ursuline school prayer and took lots of photos which were compiled into a video. “I have to say, I was overcome with emotion at Sophie’s Sextro’s Ceremony,” said Kelley Callier ’94 who participated in the ceremony for senior, Sophie Sextro. “The whole experience was wonderful! Seeing a fellow alumna, who I now cross paths with in my career today, saying hello to Ms. Zobel who hasn’t aged a bit - she must of been 20 when she was teaching me - and still remembered me, the director of mission effectivness who said I was ‘welcome to visit anytime’, all the family, neighbors, friends who came out to support Sophie as she received her cap and gown, made me wish I would of planned to go to each and every girl’s home! Thanks again for inviting me to be a part of this experience. Memories of my own graduation flooded back and made me realize how lucky I am to say I am to be UA Alumna!” It was a meaningful occasion under these unique circumstances, even from a distance, the Ursuline love was felt. We had more than 100 alums participate so that each senior across 2 states and 20 zip codes had an alumna at their ceremony. In four hours 20 teams of co-workers were joined by alums and visited every senior with their own unique and special ceremony. Katie Balek Kempf ’01 told the alumnae who participated “Thank you for bringing the Ursuline alumnae community to each one of our seniors - it’s the complete definition of what our unique sisterhood is all about. I’m in total awe and so proud! It’s exactly what St. Angela meant in her words, “Build Community Wherever You Go.”

Claire Burkemper ’12 2019 Young Alumna Serviam Award Claire attended St. Joseph’s of Manchester grade school and was excited to start her days at Ursuline, where two of her aunts attended before her. At UA, Claire was an ambassador, participated in the Music and Service Clubs and POSSE. She went on the service trip to New Orleans and became involved in Campus Ministry events like Cardboard Village. Claire graduated with a wonderful group of friends and many fond memories. Rockhurst University was Claire’s next stop on her journey. She became a Rockhurst ambassador and was the Vice President of VOICES for Justice, a social justice club on campus. She attended the Ignatian Teach-In for Justice in 2013 and lobbied at the national level for immigration reform. She played a role in helping the university bookstore to become fair trade, and helped organize Karaoke for a Cause, a fundraiser to raise funds for installing toilets for a grade school in Tanzania. Claire involved herself in campus ministry and helped with student retreats. She went on a service trip to Belize during spring break, and volunteered or interned with Associated Youth Services and Hope Faith Missions. Upon her graduation, she received the prestigious Living the Mission student leader award, given to the one senior who best lived out the mission of Rockhurst University. Following her college graduation, Claire was accepted into the Jesuit Volunteer Corps International program and was assigned to Pohnpei, Micronesia. She taught 8th grade at Pohnpei Catholic school. She was also involved with their Campus Ministry, ran the school spelling bee, and helped the staff toward earning their school accreditation. Claire was an active member of the local church community in Pohnpei. Although it was difficult for Claire to leave, she knew that it was time to move forward with both her personal aspirations and development. After Claire’s service in Pohnpei concluded in 2018, she was accepted to Loyola University Chicago’s MAGIS program. The term “Magis” is a key element of Jesuit Spirituality; it’s an invitation to do more and to become more in the hope of offering greater service. As a member of this program, she lives in community, runs after school groups for youth in the Back of the Yards neighborhood in Chicago through her employment with Catholic Charities, and is earning her Masters in Social Work. Claire’s parents, Marianne and Vince said, “Claire enjoys being involved with others, meeting them where they are. She is not afraid to “jump in with both feet.” often becoming a leader in service groups or ministry and brings forth new and creative ideas. She has a knack for seeing the positive in a situation and the best in each person.”
Claire Flowers ’02 Store Front Opening - Claire Flowers In October of 2019, Claire Flowers ‘02 held the grand opening of her first retail store in Clayton, Missouri. Claire has been designing and selling timeless, luxury women’s footwear since 2014. This accomplishment, five years in the making, features a design-it-yourself shoe bar and concierge shoe service. She has been known to drop a few designs in the red Ursuline Plaid with her signature pink heel caps, so be sure to check in on her designs frequently. Sr. Leandra Schaller ’66 40th Jubilee as a Franciscan Sister The Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity (Marycrest) are celebrating the 40th jubilee of Sister Leandra Schaller. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Sister is the daughter of the late Leona Lankau Schaller and Charles Schaller. After attending Northern Arizona University and Fontbonne University, Sister earned her Doctorate at the University of Missouri before entering the community in 1977. When she was completing her dissertation at the University of Missouri, Columbia, a sister from the community was campus minister. She first thought of being a sister in the 6th grade. As the years rolled by, she continued her education and it was not until meeting this sister that she began to pursue the idea of religious life in earnest. She began teaching at NAU in 1970 and retired in 2013. She served 29 years at several schools in the Denver area which included Regis Jesuit, Mullen, and Holy Family High Schools. Her fields of service were science, math and guidance counseling. Her favorite parts of religious life are prayer, private and in community, service and mutual support. Her hobbies include, camping, reading and piano. “God has a way of accepting us and loving us where we are, and God’s time is not always ours.”
Katie Kemp Lezcano ’02 Wheel of Fortune
Katie Kemp Lezcano ’02 was a contestant on an episode of Wheel of Fortune that aired on November 25, 2019. The episode’s theme was Shopping Spree. As the first to spin, Katie did a great job, and went on to solve a few of the puzzles. Way to go, Katie!
Sr. Mary Ann Luth, osu ’38 Remembering 100 Years of Life Sr. Mary Ann Luth, osu ’38 (UA principal 1950-1959) was celebrated over the summer when she turned 100 years old. She always had the UA Magazine read to her to be up to speed on her UA News. Due to the conditions of the pandemic, members of the Ursuline Academy St. Louis community creatively embraced her with love and well wishes by sending cards and special deliveries, to a gathering of Ursuline Sisters outside her window to celebrate with her! A couple of months later, she entered eternal rest at her residence at St. Andrews at Francis Place in Eureka, MO. She was a faith-filled woman who impacted numerous lives in her 100-year legacy. The entire Ursuline community is incredibly grateful to Sr. Mary Ann for her ministry, as she lived her life guided by the words and spirit of St. Angela.

Emily Williams ’17 Come Together - Serviam In Action During the spread of the coronavirus in the St. Louis area, Emily Williams ’17 looked for ways she could lend a hand and connect with neighbors and members of her community. To do so, she founded Come Together Delivery, a delivery service where elderly and vulnerable members of the community can safely get help with errands. In the spring she was interviewed by KMOX News to talk about the services available and ways people can volunteer and support Come Together. Sabrina Vitale DiPiazza ’94 COVID-19 Research As part of the Division of Infectious Diseases, Allergy and Immunology at Saint Louis University the team for the Center for Vaccine Development, which includes Sabrina Vitale DiPiazza ’94, was featured on Fox 2 News for their work on developing treatment for the coronavirus. A statement from the school says that the trial supported by the National Institutes of Health may be conducted at around 75 sites in the United States and the world. Sabrina serves as the Clinical Research Coordinator and Clinical Nurse Recruiter for the Center of Vaccine Development. At Saint Louis University, the Center of Vaccine Development is a multi-disciplinary research center designed to conduct basic and clinical research on new vaccines and biologics.
Alumnae At the Auction Ursuline Lighting their Spark No matter the path our young women take after graduating from Ursuline, mastering technology and being innovative in their field will be a required skill for their success. It will take a sense of openness and flexibility to learn new things and in new ways, and then adapting it and applying those skills into their work. Reflecting on how we can prepare our current students for a changing job landscape like this, Angela Birke-Andrasko ’94 and Madeline Stadler ’13 shared with the Ursuline community how they’ve seen these challenges play out in the workforce. “I was a student naturally drawn more to English and language arts,” said Angela, who is now a Clinical Research Specialist for the Department of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine. “I remember the impact that the hands-on experiments in chemistry had on me. They challenged me to think differently and learn in a new way. Without these experiences, I likely would not have understood that I could have a career in science.” Madeline, currently a Manufacturing Engineer at Boeing, also spoke on her time at Ursuline and how the environment instilled confidence and a desire to be a life-long learner. “Being a woman in a male-dominated field can be challenging. I thank Ursuline for the confidence I gained during high school. I was in a safe space where learning was cool. Along with confidence, women must have strong experiences in a technological-based environment,” she said. “I was a student who adored math, but then I took chemistry and physics with Dr. Judy Anderson. She taught subjects in a way that made me think “alright now I am torn…physics or math?” That’s when I discovered I could have both as an engineer. In my classes at Ursuline, I was taught to be fearless and to face challenges head-on. This confidence gave me the courage to seek out a degree in engineering from Washington University.” Our students have tremendous potential as leaders, change-makers, care-givers, and global citizens, but it is so exciting to see the fruits of that potential bloom in our alumnae. We were so grateful to have these two amazing women speak at our Tropic Gala Auction and share their stories with us. They are incredible examples of our mission and we are so proud to have them as members of our community.

Alumnae Spirit Day 2019 A New Annual Celebration of Our Alumnae The Alumnae Association continued a new tradition in 2019: Alumnae Spirit Day. It was a full day of celebrating our Ursuline friendships and reconnecting to campus, teachers, and the Ursuline mission. The day began with the “Toast for Tradition” luncheon for alums who celebrated 50 or more years since their Ursuline graduation. Memories, school songs, and many laughs were shared over a champagne toast and coffee from our Bearista Cafe. Tours of campus followed as did our Memorial Mass in the afternoon. Later that evening, live music, food trucks, Narwhal’s Crafted bar, campus tours, spirit shopping, Thelma’s 99th Birthday Bake Sale, and children’s activities filled the night.

Marilyn has dedicated 15 years of continual service to Ursuline Academy’s Alumnae Office through her personalized birthday card ministry to alumnae donors. Hand-addressing each card, handstamping, and hand-delivering them to the mailbox every day, her unique service to Ursuline administrators and alumnae has been deeply appreciated. Ursuline alums are on her mind each day as she sends out the latest cards, and the Alumnae Association is very grateful.

THE CLASS OF 1949 CELEBRATING THEIR REUNION AND CLASSMATE MARILYN HECKWOLF HOHNER IN 2019
Before Challen Cody Koch ’49 moved out of state, she “recruited” Marilyn to take on the birthday card project so that the ministry could continue. Marilyn was joined by Georgia Prokasky Laschober ’49 for many years as well. Marilyn is a proud member of “the 49ers” and is an organizer of her class’ monthly lunch gatherings that have been in existence since their graduation 70 years ago. They were even featured in the St. Louis PostDispatch in 2014 in celebration of their friendship and loyalty to one another. Marilyn has many fond memories of UA and often tells the stories of how she took streetcars from her Baden neighborhood just to arrive at UA. Marilyn’s life-long dedication to our Ursuline motto of Serviam is full of stories of living in rural Alaska for 8 years while raising her young children. Marilyn and her husband, Vic, were teachers in the small Alaskan villages for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Marilyn and Vic moved to Texas with their family before moving back to St. Louis in the 70s. Marilyn is also a retired teacher and secretary and provided the main income for her family for many years, including her three daughters and one son. Marilyn cared for her grown son, Guy, in their home until he passed away last year after a lung cancer diagnosis. Marilyn, who celebrated her 70th reunion in 2019, has not slowed down in her Serviam efforts despite the many ups and downs of life. You can find her volunteering for many St. Louis organizations like the Missouri Botanical Gardens, The Repertory Theater, Sheldon Coffee Concerts, Laumeier Art Fair, and St. Mary’s hospital gift shop. Marilyn also has served as an actress for Washington University Medical School where she helped Medical Students by giving mock symptoms for them to diagnosis, or for Emergency Response personnel to practice large-scale emergencies. Her classmate, Marian Koetting ’49, says that Marilyn’s adventurous spirit has been an inspiration to the class and has encouraged her to write a book about her travels and life full of entertaining stories. Marilyn has said that she has enjoyed all of her Serviam efforts and that we shouldn’t “broadcast it, but that I do it because I love it.” Maryanna Coad, another member of the Class of 1949 said: “Marilyn is indeed very deserving of the 2019 Distinguished Alumna Award, and our class of 1949 is very fortunate to have not only attended Ursuline with Marilyn but consider Marilyn a life-long good friend.”

You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as ours without having to pay income taxes on the money. Why Consider This Gift? Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making. You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions. If you have not yet taken your required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement. A Gift of Stocks Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds, or other securities will receive a tax deduction based on the value of the security on the date of the gift.
